Avoid visiting during the high season

When is the best time to visit Cancún

It can be visited at any time during the year , however it helps to know which times are recommended and when to avoid when planning a trip to Cancún.

High season occurs during the winter months of December to February . The crowds flock here to escape the cold weather back home and instead experience near perfect weather with a whole lot of sunshine . This means that prices are elevated during these months while attractions, tours, restaurants and beaches will be packed. While on that note, if you’re not a big fan of crowds, in addition to the peak winter months avoid a visit during America’s spring break when hoards of college kids descend on the city for a non-stop party-fest. Low season occurs during the summer months of June, July, and August. During this period the temperature rises significantly as does the humidity levels. The good thing is that hotel and other accommodation rates are at their lowest rates during this time, allowing you to stretch that holiday budget and enjoy this resort town without the crowds.

Do you need a Covid-19 test to visit Cancún

The short answer is no. Mexico, as a whole, has not implemented any Covid-19 test or quarantine on arrival regulations . You will however, be requested to complete a Health Declaration Form and scan the subsequent code on arrival at the airport. Many resorts and hotels will also request the completion of a health questionnaire during check-in. You will also be delighted to hear that Cancún has been recognized by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) for implementing elevated health and safety protocols related to the coronavirus pandemic.

One of the most important tips for visiting Cancún:

Don’t lose your Immigration Form (FMM)

Every person visiting Mexico is required to complete an Official Entry Immigration Form or Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) before being allowed into the country. This form can be completed online, on your flight, or on arrival at the airport. You will need your passport details, flight itinerary, and address in Mexico in order to fill out the form.

Upon arrival, your immigration form will be stamped and handed back to you. Keep this exit form safe as you will be required to present it along with your passport upon your departure from Mexico. If you do happen to loose your Immigration Form during your trip in Mexico , it’s a huge hassle and inconvenience to apply and get a replacement before you can leave the country. So just keep it in a safe place.

How many days to spend in Cancún

This really depends on the purpose of your trip. However, for the most part 3 – 5 days in Cancún is sufficient if all you’re looking for is a quick beach vacation getaway.

One week is good if you’re looking to add some sightseeing onto your itinerary to experience the culture and adventure (outside the city of Cancún) in the surrounding Yucatan region.

You could even do two weeks for a proper getaway with sufficient time to relax, shop, visit an adventure park, and take day trips to the surrounding region.

What to pack for Cancún

First of all, you should know that Cancún is one of the best places for beach and water activities, so I recommend packing swimwear, sunscreen, and light clothing . A pair of sandals and walking shoes will also be ideal for visiting the sites in the region and for general exploring by foot. In some site like the archaeological ruins, you will find rocky terrain within minutes of the beach, so a hybrid of the two is ideal to make getting around that much easier. Other items that will come in handy include a light rain jacket, hats, sunglasses, and insect repellant .

Your luggage will also depend on where you will stay, the places you will visit, and the means of transportation you choose. If you opt for a car rental during your stay in Cancún, the space you will have will be bigger and you have the convenience of being able to move with your things wherever you go. If your method of transportation is by bus or other public transportation options you should take into account an extra backpack in which to store your belongings. Or maybe, just pack less. Electricity is 110V/60 Hz with North American-style two flat-pin outlets. Don’t forget to pack a universal plug adapter. 

Don’t forget your passport It is always recommended to have a screenshot of your passport on your phone or a printed copy in your wallet, while the original remains safe in a safe space in your hotel or vacation rental. If you’re renting a car in Cancún, you’ll need a valid driver’s license . Bring along your international diving certificate if you plan on diving in the beautiful waters of the Mexican Caribbean.

However, when it comes down to it, it’s not that difficult of a choice to make with the abundance of hotels, villas , and resorts to suit all budgets and every kind of travel style .

Most of the accommodation options and amenities for tourists in Cancun are located in what is aptly named the “Hotel Zone” or Zona Hotelera (Punta Cancun) . This area is constantly buzzing with life and activity, no matter the time of day, and is popular for having the best nightlife in town.

The hotel zone is also the safest area for visitors in Cancun and you can walk around at night without much of a worry. Due to its of abundance of resort chains, popularity and safety,  Zona Hotelera is the best area to stay in Cancun for first time visitors as well as regular travelers to the city. You will find plenty of accommodation options, featuring beautiful sea views, a vibrant nightlife, amenities for families, and lots of activities for guests. As an alternative, the downtown area or El Centro is a great choice for those looking for a more authentic local experience as well as for those on a budget.

The Westin Resort & Spa Cancun is my top choice for the best resort in Cancún. You will have access to a private white-sand beach with breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and Nichupte Lagoon. The Westin is conveniently located at the quiet end of Cancun’s Hotel Zone, so you get to be centrally located, while still avoiding the hustle and bustle. Cancun tips: Saving money

The currency in Mexico is the Peso. The currency comes in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 peso notes and coins come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 pesos. Due to its popularity and high demand as a sought-after tourist destination, Cancun is generally not considered to be one of the most affordable places in the country. A high demand means increased prices across the board including accommodation, activities, and food. If you’re looking for other budget-friendly alternatives, be sure to check out this list of amazingly cheap destinations to visit in Mexico .

There is also a tourist tax imposed on all international visitors (over the age of four) arriving to the State of Quintana Roo, referred to as the VisiTAX. This tax must be paid before departing from Mexico and proof of payment is required, so either before arrival, during your stay, or at the airport before departure. Payment can be made online via the Visitax website and it is synchronized with your passport. Often times, airlines include the tax with the airfare. So I would advise that you confirm this while booking your international flight ticket. You will receive conformation of payment via email, and I would recommend keeping a copy of this payment on our cellphone. As of February 2024, the Cancun Departure Tax is 224 Mexican pesos (MXN) or 12 USD.

Here are some essential money saving Cancún tips to consider during your stay:

— If you’re trying to save some pennies, getting around by bus is a good option. Everything that you may want to see in Cancún is accessible by bus. The bus routes encompasses the entire hotel zone, Blvd. Kukulcán, and El Centro. With frequent bus stops and an affordable rate (12 MXN) per trip, this remains a viable transport option. Getting around on foot is another great option if you’re not planning on traveling between zones. Car sharing rides such as uber are also an option. — Avoid using taxis in the hotel zone Prices are 3 to 5 times the normal rate here. — Visit Cancun during the off season. Even though the temperatures may not be perfect, traveling in the months of June to September will mean lower accommodation rates, cheaper flights, and fewer crowds. — Make payment in local pesos. Yes, USD is widely accepted, however it usually comes at a slightly higher rate than when paying in pesos. — Avoid using currency exchange offices and ATMs at the airport. — Make use of the Tax Back program. Many shops in Cancun are duty-free and if you spend over 1,200 pesos you are entitled to receive a percentage (currently 8.9%) of your payment back as a reimbursement of the taxes paid. On your return from Cancun, be sure to go to the money back counter to claim the refund on your purchases. Be sure to keep all of your receipts. — Don’t forget to bring all essentials from home. Things like sunscreen, over the counter medication, and insect repellant come at a premium in Cancun tourist area, so rather bring what you already have along with you. On the same breath, Cancun can be a great place to shop if you know where to look. Avoid the hotel zone and tourist area in Cancun and rather opt to shop in the downtown El Centro area.

Is Cancun safe?

Yes, for the most part Cancún is a relatively safe city . The crime in Cancún is much lower than many other places in the country as the government has implemented additional safety measures and security personnel to ensure the safety of tourists. Tourism is the biggest source of revenue for this region and the Mexican government has a vested interest in protecting its visitors. Despite this, always maintain safe practices and common sense . Trust your gut – if something feels off, rather err on the side of caution.

You biggest concern will be scams and petty crime. Follow these other safety tips for Cancún to ensure your vacation goes trouble-free:

— Be aware of your surroundings, particularly after dark and when withdrawing money from ATMs. — Don’t flash your expensive belongings, jewelry, cameras, mobile phones so as to draw any unwanted attention your way from petty thieves. Keep all valuables in a safe place at your accommodation. — Never leave any drinks unattended, especially as a solo traveler. This safety tip is not only applicable in Mexico, but back home and around the world. — Avoid driving on remote roads, particularly at night, not only because of safety issues, but also because of the large number of potholes. — When making use of a taxi, remember that taxi drivers are required to always display their official permit in a visible location. Never get into any unmarked, unofficial taxis. — Solo female travelers should avoid walking alone at night . Do some research of the area beforehand so that you know where you’re going before you head out. — If you’re a US citizen, consider registering your trip with the US Department of State through their STEP program. This will mean you get a notification in the event of something going astray in the country you’re visiting with advise on the best steps to take in this regard.

Do you need travel insurance? The uncertainty of the past few years regarding travel has made me realise the importance and benefits of taking out travel insurance. I suggest you do the same, for some peace of mind, at the very least.

There is a flag system implemented in Mexico as a way to warn swimmers about the conditions of the sea . A green flags signals that the waters are safe for swimming. A yellow flag is a sign to practise caution. A red flag is a warning sign that the waters are dangerous. While a black flag is used to let everyone know that they should stay away from the waters.

Things to do in Cancun

There are so many activities in Cancún and the surrounding Riviera Maya that I’m sure you will need days to discover them all. Despite the comfort and entertainment of your resort in Cancun, don’t spend all of your vacation time in-resort. Take some time to discover the area via some of these things to do in Cancun. Visiting the beautiful beaches in Cancún and Riviera is one of the most popular activities to do in the area. Playa Gaviotas and Delfines are two of the best known. You can find the giant letters of CANCUN and beautiful scenery with live beach music courtesy of the beach clubs nearby. Other beaches worth stopping by include Playa Marlin, Playa Chacmool, and Playa Delfines. If you’re visiting the region intending to have the best party nights — that’s what Cancún is famous for. In that case, places like Coco Bongo, Dady O, Grand Mambocafé, The City, Senor Frogs, and Mandala are ideal options for you.

The plazas and shopping malls are also places to visit if you are in Cancún and want to shop. Although the most popular in Cancun is Puerto Cancun, in Playa del Carmen, you can find Quinta Alegria on Fifth Avenue.

Another Cancun tip for shopping lovers: Mercado 28 is a huge flea market where you can find hundred of local vendors selling everything from antiques and vintage clothes to souvenirs and handcrafted goods. The prices here are not bad if you take the time to look and are able to bargain somewhat.

One of the best known things to do from Cancún is to take a short ferry ride to the tropical island of Isla Mujeres . Here you get to enjoy pleasures of Mexican island life with options to go snorkeling and diving in the surrounding waters.

Can’t get enough of the water? Head to the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA) . It is the largest underwater museum in the world, with over 500 life-size underwater sculptures that serve as both works of art and artificial reefs. These sculptures can be viewed while snorkeling, scuba diving, or from a glass-bottom boat. Other museums in Cancun include the Museum of Mexican Folk Art and the Mayan Museum of Cancun.

Isla Mujeres is one of the best day trips from Cancún. Other popular and recommended day trips from Cancun include Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Valladolid, Chichen Itza, Las Coloradas, Izamal, and Isla Holbox.

You will have no troubles in getting to Cancun because it is one of the main tourist cities in Mexico, with an international airport. Cancún International Airport (CUN) is the 2nd busiest airport in Mexico and is found 15-20 minutes south of Cancún center and the hotel zone.

You can easily travel to Cancun by booking a flight from the United States, Canada, the UK, and the rest of the world. The most popular airlines with regular flights traveling to Cancun are American Airlines, British Airways, and Continental Airlines. American Airlines, Aeromexico, JetBlue, United, Delta, Spirit Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Frontier Airlines fly non-stop to Cancún.

At the airport in Cancún (CUN)

During your flight to Cancún, you will receive a customs form (hacienda) to fill out. Once you pass through immigration, collect your luggage and proceed to the exit. You may be stopped and searched by custom officials at this stage. It should be noted that you are allowed to bring into Mexico whatever you need for the time period that you will be in the country for. However, you are not allowed to bring food, fruits , and products that are not “company” packed and sealed, unless required for special dietary or medical reasons. The same rule applies to medicine and you are allowed to bring enough medicine for the time period you will be in Mexico. If you are bringing an unusual quantity of medicine, be sure to carry a doctor’s prescription just in case you need to prove the medicine is for your own consumption.

Another thing to note is that the center of Cancun is close to Cancun International Airport. It’s fairly simple to get from the airport to the hotel zone. You have the following options:

• Private transfer . This is the most convenient and most private option, but often the most expensive.
• Taxi . Hoards of taxi drivers wait at the exit of the airport terminal. If you are so inclined, grab one as an easy way to get to your hotel in under 30 minutes at a cost of around 600 MXN.
• Airport shared shuttle service . It is required to reserve airport shuttle seats in advance.
• Public bus . This is the budget option, costing 100 MXN to get you to downtown Cancun in around 35 minutes using the ADO bus service.

Get out of the hotel zone for a bit of culture

This deserves repeating as it’s important. If you spend your entire vacation in your resort or with the hotel zone, you miss out on experiencing local culture, natural wonders, adventurous activities, and friendly locals . Take some time to explore and you will discover an authentic local experience . This is also where you will find exotic foods and the best traditional Mexican cuisine.

Don’t forget to tip generously

Tipping is customary throughout Mexico and goes a long way in the lives of those working in the service industry. It is also customary to tip tour guides. As best as you can, try to tip in pesos. If this is not possible, US dollars are also appreciated. It is common to leave 10% to 20% in tips, depending on service.

A Bit Of History

Like many towns in the Mexican Caribbean, Cancun was once a Mayan cultural center. This particular piece of land was essential for the Mayan fishing and maritime trades. After the Mayans left the area and prior to the 1970s, Cancun was all but forgotten. Surviving with just 100 residents.

Fast forward to the 1970s, when the Mexican government deemed Cancun the best place to build the next Caribbean tourist destination!

The Mexican government actually had to finance the first few resorts themselves because it took a lot of convincing to get investors interested. Yet by the mid 1980s, Cancun had achieved its goal. It was the IT destination in Mexico.

With a bustling nightlife and a diverse culinary scene, Cancun offers something for everyone. It has truly become one of the most sought after destinations on the Caribbean.

Is Cancun Safe?

Cancun is widely considered a safe city, especially compared to other cities in Mexico.

While gang related crime has risen a bit in recent years, it typically happens well outside of tourist areas and doesn’t target tourists.

With tourism the heartbeat of the Cancun economy, locals and government officials do their best to keep the crime rate low and the city safe. As long as you don’t go looking for trouble, use common sense, and are generally aware of your surroundings, Cancun can be enjoyed greatly and safely.

Where is Cancun?

Cancun is located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula by the Caribbean Sea. It is approximately an hour north of Playa Del Carmen and two hours north of Tulum . A flight from Houston or Miami is a quick two hours as well.

Adjacent to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef  (the second-longest coral reef system in the world), Cancun is in a perfect spot for turquoise Caribbean waters, white sand beaches, and world-class diving and snorkeling. This is DEFINITELY the island life!

The Best Time to Visit Cancun

Looking for the best time to go to Cancun? The tropical climate in Cancun is quite predictable, and easy to make plans around. Without much of a temperature difference throughout the year, (the average temperature lingers around 83° F) it’s the rainy season that most travelers pay attention to.

January – April

Perfectly warm and clear weather-wise, but sees the highest influx of tourists. If you are not a people person, consider this. The ocean, cenotes and swimming pools that aren’t heated can still be a little chilly for some.

May – October

The hottest and most rainy months of the year but still plenty of sunshine and fantastic warm water for snorkeling & diving. Also, the hurricane season peaks in September and October, so keep an eye on the forecasts and definitely get travel insurance just in case. Fewer tourists mean you can typically expect lower rates at hotels, resorts and tour companies during this time.

November – December

The autumn-winter months are considered by many to be the best times to visit Cancun. The hurricane season has passed by this time, and the humidity is low. It can be a little “cool” in the evenings.

  When Is Cancun Hurricane Season?

Cancun hurricane season begins in late May and lasts until early November, with the peak occurring between August and October. The odds of a hurricane hitting Cancun are low (less than half a dozen hurricanes have hit the Yucatan in the past 40 years), but hurricanes traveling near Cancun can still cause inclement and severe weather. Be sure to check weather reports ahead of time, and we always suggest getting travel insurance during these months just in case.

How to Get to Cancun & Around

There are a few ways to get to Cancun and around the city.

Arrival By Air

Most people fly directly to Cancun as numerous international flights arrive in Cancun daily. Cancun International Airport (CUN) is located in Cancun City (Centro) and is around 13 miles from the Zona Hotelera. It is the largest airport in the region and greets more than 20 million visitors a year.

Airport Shuttles in Cancun

Private or Group Shuttles can be pre-arranged to pick you up at the airport and take you to your accommodation. Group shuttles may stop at numerous hotels before yours, so this method could take much longer than a private shuttle (while being a bit cheaper).

Shared shuttles are around $10 per person, while a private minivan shuttle can be booked for around $30-$40 per van. We recommend getting a private shuttle if you are in a group of 2 or more people.

Taxis in Cancun

Taxis are everywhere and will take you straight from the airport to your accommodation. The price is highly regulated so ask at the taxi stand for the price. Typically $40-$50 dollars to locations in Centro or the Hotel Zone. We recommend pre-arranging an airport shuttle instead (see above).

Taxis are a convenient way to get around Cancun for sure. Within the hotel zone or within Centro, prices are around $4-$7 dollars. Traveling between the Hotel Zone and Centro is $10-$15 one way. Your hotel can typically call a taxi to pick you up when you’re ready to depart your hotel.

Taxis between Cancun and Playa del Carmen or Tulum are an easy option but can be quite expensive. Be sure to discuss the prices in advance of taking the ride, so you don’t get overcharged.

Rental Cars in Cancun

Renting a car may be the most convenient choice depending on how much exploring you plan to do on your own. It is an easy and affordable option with rental cars costing as little as $15 a day. Be sure to check if your hotel has parking available.

The roads between Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum are very straightforward and safe. Having a rental car will give easy access to Cenotes and other sites outside of town. Watch out for Topes! (speed bumps).

Buses in Cancun

The most affordable and increasingly popular form of transport, buses go to most places you want to go, and some are even air-conditioned. Keep in mind that this is the slowest and least comfortable way to get around.

From the airport, there are frequent public buses available into the city. From Tulum and Playa del Carmen, buses are also widely available. Consult your hotel for pickup/dropoff locations.

There is so much to do in  Cancun!  From live shows to sailing cruises and more, it’s really easy to make each day in Cancun a special experience. Here are just some of the activities you can enjoy!

1. Have A Beach Day

The Hotel Zone beaches go on for miles and are sandy and fantastic. Most resorts have their own stretch of beach with loungers and day beds but feel free to walk down the beaches to find your favorite stretch of sand.

Playa Delfines is the most popular (and beautiful) public beach and is a great place to take a swim and lay out for a tan. The water can get a little choppy at times, so it’s not ideal for small children. Delfines is home to the famous colorful “Cancun” sign too for those looking for that classic Instagram shot. For better swimming, try Playa Chac Mool which is also in the Hotel Zone. Gentle, quiet and tranquilo.

*Note: Since 2008, Sargassum (seaweed) has regularly arrived on the Caribbean coast of Mexico (Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, etc.) from April to August. Many resorts and beaches remove the seaweed from the sand daily, but it can pile up by the water’s edge and be stinky in places where it’s not removed. For this reason, we suggest getting a hotel with a nice pool area for swimming or spending some time on the islands of Cozumel or Isla Mujeres which are largely protected from the seaweed.

2. Experience The Adventure Parks

About an hour south of Cancun are a cluster of world famous adventure parks that are unlike anything you’ve probably experienced before.

The most famous is Xcaret , with its meandering canals you can swim through, incredible beach coves, cultural shows, jungle hikes, and so much more. They are a little pricey, but the adventure parks are widely considered a must-do in the area.

Other very popular parks include Xplor with its caves, ziplines, rafting and ATVs, Xel-Ha with its waterslides, snorkeling, mangrove tubing and other water activities, Xplor Fuego a nighttime torchlight adventure, Xenotes cenote experience, Xoximilco floating fiesta and the oddly popular Xenses optical illusion park.

3. Take A Day Trip To Chichen Itza

If you’ve never been to a Mayan ruin, why not start with one of the best! Chichen Itza is an epic collection of temples and monuments that are worth the trip to get there.

Around a two-hour drive from Cancun, many people combine the adventure with a swim at a cenote on the way back to cool off.

You can rent a car and do the drive yourself, but most people book either a private tour or take a group tour for simplicity. This also allows you to zonk out in the van on the way back! Note that group tours typically do not include the park entrance fee of $30 USD adult or $5 child.

4. Visit A Cenote

Talk about healing properties. The cenote choices in the Cancun area are vast and diverse as there are literally dozens of incredible locations nearby. A cenote is typically formed when a cave has collapsed on itself and then fills with rainwater or natural underground spring water. You can swim, scuba dive, snorkel or just walk through one of these breathtaking and powerful forces of nature.

5. Go Snorkeling or Scuba Diving

Hire a tour company to jet you around the lagoons or go with a dive shop and see what lies beneath.

The  Underwater Sculpture Museum at MUSA has become quite a popular attraction in recent years. Over 500 sculptures were built and installed in the shallow blue waters in an attempt to rebuild the reef system.

The Island of Cozumel , just a short ferry ride away, is known to be one of the best places in the world to dive and snorkel, so if you have the time, we recommend you try it! But there are plenty of other diving and snorkeling options as well! Get in the water and explore. A true treasure awaits.

6. Enjoy The Nightlife

You are in the Mexican Caribbean’s party center, after all! The northern part of Zona Hotelera is called Punta Cancun and is the nightlife party area with plenty of clubs and tourist bars. Everything you need to know before visiting Cancún

If my frequent travels to Cancún have taught me anything, it's that paradise will throw you a curveball from time to time.

Among the setbacks, I've experienced a costly car break-in, brazen price gouging and a debilitating bout of sickness with dengue fever, an ordeal that still makes my joints ache just thinking about it. But every time I found myself in need of help, the good folks in Cancún have stepped up big-time, and that's no small thing.

While some first-time visitors never leave the touristy, high-gloss hotel zone – which I get, the stunning resort offers pillow-soft Caribbean beaches – you’ll kick yourself later if you overlook the Centro, a bustling downtown.

This is where you can mingle with locals in the neighborhood cantinas and barter at traditional markets. Visit one atmospheric taco joint and you’ll be glad you made the effort. 

With that in mind, here are nine essential tips to make your Cancún trip run as smooth as possible.

1. Stay alert but don't let the clickbait headlines spook you

Despite all the grim news about Mexico 's drug-related violence, Cancún and the wider Yucatán Peninsula are generally considered safe.

Granted, you should never treat the crime problem lightly, but drug gangs rarely target tourists, especially if you avoid illicit activities.

That said, it's important to keep a close watch on your drink in bars and nightclubs. There have been reports of some tourists getting their drinks spiked with so-called date rape drugs. You should also avoid withdrawing money from ATMs at night, and never carry large amounts of cash.

2. Monitor hurricane season and seaweed surges

Cancún's hurricane season runs from June to November, and over the years the city has seen powerful storms cause devastating damage. Always check the latest weather forecast before you board a plane.

Also, keep a close eye on sargassum seaweed surges ( sargazo in Spanish), which can turn Cancún's turquoise waters brown. These blooms leave mounds of smelly, decomposing macroalgae carpeted across otherwise white sands. An influx of seaweed makes swimming and sunbathing downright unpleasant.

If it happens when you're in Cancún, consider doing less beach time and splash around in hotel pools and cenotes (freshwater sinkholes) instead.

The invasive surges occur intermittently, usually from March to August, but they can be unpredictable. The NGO  Red de Monitoreo de Sargazo posts daily updates on beach conditions in Cancún and the nearby Riviera Maya .

3. Tip generously and haggle respectfully

Keep in mind that many Cancún service workers (namely restaurant and hotel employees) depend on tips to supplement miserable wages. In restaurants, leave a 15% gratuity if the service is not already included.

Remember to check the bill carefully, though – some unscrupulous establishments have been known to tack on a "service fee" in the hope that customers unknowingly leave an additional tip.

For airport and hotel porters, tip about M$25 a bag, while for tour guides give an extra 10–20% of the cost of the outing, or perhaps a bit more for full-day excursions. Gas station attendants typically get about M$5 to M$10.

Bartenders, baristas and taxi drivers generally do not expect tips but always welcome them. It's acceptable to haggle with the market and street vendors to a certain degree, but remember that they're just trying to make a living.

4. Don't forget to pack ID, bug spray and casual clothing

To rent a car, you'll need to show a passport, driver's license and credit card. Mexican law requires you to have liability coverage, known in Spanish as daños a terceros .

Citizens from the US, Canada and EU countries, as well as residents from dozens of other nations, do not need visas to enter Mexico as tourists.

To protect yourself from mosquitoes and the sun, pack biodegradable insect repellent, long-sleeve shirts and a pair of pants. You'll definitely need the bug spray when visiting during the muggy wet season from May through October.

Even if you have repellent or sunscreen of the biodegradable variety, do not use them while swimming or snorkeling in fragile ecosystems such as coral reefs and cenotes. Loose-fitting clothes that dry quickly will serve you well for water activities and rainy days.

5. Explore the surrounding countryside

You can usually find plenty of things to do in the hotel zone and downtown Cancún but try to squeeze in at least one trip to see a different side of the Yucatán Peninsula. Seven to 10 days should give you ample time to tour Cancún and beyond.

Venture south to check out ancient ruins, jungle-set swimming holes and small fishing towns along the Riviera Maya, or head east on a day trip to  Valladolid , a colonial city with a rich Maya history.

Alternatively, the nearby islands of  Isla Mujeres and  Isla Holbox provide blissful nature escapes for snorkeling, diving and kayaking adventures.

6. Carry cash and bring a credit and/or debit card

Even though most places in Cancún accept major credit cards, it's always useful to carry some cash, especially in the smaller surrounding towns and islands.

Many hotels, and even some restaurants, accept US dollars, but they normally offer an unfavorable currency exchange rate.

The ubiquitous ATMs accept foreign debit cards but expect to get dinged with international transaction fees for withdrawals.

The same goes for many retail purchases as well. Some major credit cards won't charge such fees, giving you the most bang for your buck. Cancún's ATMs dispense Mexican pesos.

7. All-inclusive resorts are great, but you're missing Cancún's food scene

The hotel zone is home to most of Cancún's all-inclusive hotels, though high-end resorts are also cropping up in Punta Sam and along the sublime  Isla Blanca peninsula, north of downtown.

The all-inclusive experience ranges from luxurious adults-only setups with above-and-beyond service (personal butlers and all) to slightly more affordable family-friendly accommodations.

If you're looking for a safe, self-contained environment with multiple restaurants, bottomless drinks, easy beach access, alluring outdoor pools, and kid-focused activities, book an all-inclusive.

If you prefer the resort experience without the meals and booze, some places offer room-only rates. This pushes you to get out and dive into Cancún's diverse culinary and nightlife scene. Budget travelers will find more options downtown, where hostels and mid-range digs abound.

8. Rideshare services are available in Cancún

The app-based transportation service Uber operates in Cancún, but due to a long-running dispute by taxi union members, drivers and their passengers have faced harassment and, in some cases, attacks.

If you decide to use Uber, do so at your own risk. Do not order a car from the airport, bus station, ferry terminals, or other points where rival taxis may be watching.

For the most affordable transportation from the airport, look for the red ADO bus , which runs frequently from the airport terminals to downtown Cancún's first-class bus terminal. However, if you're staying in the hotel zone, you're better off taking a shuttle or cab.

9. Don't drink the water, and try street food with caution

Cancún's tap water is generally not safe to drink unless you know it's filtered (agua filtrada) . The same goes for drinks prepared with ice; when in doubt go without. Bottled or purified (purificada) water is your best bet to stay hydrated, and you'll need plenty of it to avoid heat exhaustion.

Eating street food can be somewhat dicey in Cancún, but it's a tantalizing risk that many visitors are willing to take.

7 Things Travelers Need To Know About Visiting Cancun In 2023

It’s the new year, and travel as we know it is constantly evolving and even the most experienced of travelers have something new to learn and the latest hack to share. Whether it’s avoiding the latest taxi scam or knowing the best beaches to visit, there’s always something to learn about one of the most popular destination in the world. So, if you are planning on a trip (or two, or three?) to Cancun this year, here’s 7 things travelers need to know about visiting Cancun, Mexico in 2023. 

1. What Are The Extra Fees Tourists Have To Pay In Cancun?

The Cancun Visitor Tax that was added in 2021 was one of the few tourist taxes and fees that were approved by officials over the past two years. There’s also the Environmental Tax for hotels in Cancun, where an additional (29 MX pesos)/$1.50USD per night will be added to your hotel bill. Plus, don’t forget about the 3% city tax and 16% VAT tax in Cancun. 

The goal for the new tourist taxes like the Visitor Tax and the Environmental Tax is that the extra money will be invested towards improvements in the region that will benefit travelers as well as locals, including infrastructure and safety and sustainability practices. 

2. Know The Latest Cancun Taxi And Driver Laws And Regulations

Cancun taxi drivers haven’t had the best reputation in the local news, especially in the last few months of 2022. Whether it was about traffic accidents, scamming or insulting tourists, something was being reported about local drivers in the region.

Back in August, it was reported that 60 Cancun drivers were fined for overcharging passengers. While the state of Quintana Roo was put stricter measures in place to make sure that local drivers follow protocol, it’s important for all travelers in Cancun to know when they are being overcharged (and what to do about it). As an extra tip, here’s how you can identify whether a taxi is fake or not while traveling in Cancun.

3. Try Not To Visit Cancun When It’s Sargassum Season

Sargassum is the reality for any travelers looking to enjoy the beaches in the Mexican Caribbean and surrounding regions. But, if you want to try your best to avoid masses of it ruining your beach time, you’ll have to do some research to know the best times to visit your favorite beach destinations (like Cancun) during sargassum’s off season. 

The latest projections for early 2023 show that beaches in Cancun and the Riviera Maya will be basically sargassum-free for the first three months of the year .

The Ultimate 5-Day Cancun Itinerary

From exploring ancient ruins and shopping for souvenirs, to snorkelling and island hopping, this 5-day Cancun itinerary has it all!

Are you planning a trip to Cancun and wondering where to go and how to make the most of your time? Well, you’ve come to the right hacienda! Cancun is one of my favourite holiday destinations. This coastal city, located on the tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is known for its amazing beaches, unique Mayan heritage and natural landscapes.

If you’re spending 5 days in Cancun, you’ll find there’s a lot to fit into your itinerary. You’ll want time to explore the picturesque beaches, plan a few day trips, shop for souvenirs and eat your way around the city. There are some amazing Mayan ruins close by, beautiful turquoise cenotes and even an underwater sculpture park.

Ready for a holiday in paradise? My 5-day Cancun itinerary will help you create a trip to remember.

A Bit About Cancun

Cancun is a busy city of around 750,000 people. However, from a visitor’s point of view, it doesn’t feel like such a big place. The streets are wide and leafy and the traffic isn’t too bad.

The city is divided into two main areas. La Colonia is the sprawling downtown part of Cancun. Here you’ll find some great shopping (more about that later), all sorts of restaurants and some amazing street food. If you are looking for a cheap night out, you’ll find the restaurants and bars of La Colonia much more reasonable than by the beach.

That being said, however, the area known as the Hotel Zone — aka The Beach Side —  is where Cancun really shines. This is where you’ll find all of the top-end hotels, shimmering pools, glitzy night spots and plenty of action. If you’ve seen some of those slick travel adverts for Cancun with lots of speed-ramped footage and techno soundtracks, they’ll be showcasing this part of Cancun. 

The Mayan civilisation was present in the Cancun region for over 5,000 years and ruins from this fascinating culture dot the landscape from Cancun to Tulum. Plenty of tour companies offer day trips to see these ruins. More about those coming up too!

Day One In Cancun

Welcome to Cancun! With amazing beaches, a hectic nightlife, superb food, lots of interesting places to explore and plenty of room for activities, your time here is going to be epic. Arriving in Cancun is straightforward as Cancun International Airport is close to the area of town known as the Hotel Zone.

Hit the beaches

Once you’ve settled into your hotel and got to know the lay of the land, it’s time to hit the playa (beach). And there are plenty of playas to choose from! Here are a few I’d recommend.

• Playa Chac Mool. Although this secluded beach sits right beside the popular party beach known as Playa Forum it is quiet and peaceful. If you are looking for a place to chill out, read a book or snuggle up with someone, head here. It’s got all the paradise vibes, with white sand and turquoise ocean views.
• Playa Delfines. The turquoise waters of this popular beach (Cancun’s largest) are the playground of dolphins. As you laze on the gleaming powdery white sand, recharging after your flight, keep an eye out for these playful locals. There are plenty of umbrellas for hire if you need a bit of shade (don’t get burnt on your first day), free palapas, and loads of beach vendors selling cold drinks and snacks.  

• Playa Caracol. This lovely beach of powdery white sand is right in the heart of Cancun’s Hotel Zone, right beside the dock for ferries to Isla Mujeres. The beach is small by Cancun standards but it is popular with the locals and the crystal clear water is absolutely gorgeous.
• Playa Langosta. This is a fun family beach in the Hotel Zone. There’s a pier jutting out into the ocean and lots of shady palm trees to relax under. Locals love Playa Langosta and the calm, shallow water is ideal for basking. It’s a great option if you’re visiting Cancun with teenagers too.
• Playa Marlín. Stretched out along the front of some of the Hotel Zone’s finest complexes, this long stretch of sugary sand, washed by deep turquoise waves, is the picture-perfect Cancun beach. Be aware that the waves here pack quite a punch and there’s sometimes an undertow so stay within the lifeguard’s flags.

Watch the lights go down

After a few hours on the beach, you’ll be ready for some pre-dinner drinks. Cancun has a welter of amazing bars but, to me, one of the best is The Surfin’ Burrito . Grab a beer and sit watching the sun go down as you plan your next day in the city!

With a few bevvies under your belt, it’s time to head out for dinner. Once again, Cancun has got you covered. The hotel zone has plenty of places where you can sample delicious Mexican cuisine such as tacos, enchiladas and carne asada. Yum! 

A couple of my favourite places are Fred’s and Taboo . Both are seafood restaurants, but they sit at opposite ends of the dining spectrum. Taboo is a stylish, fine-dining restaurant, perfect for an intimate dinner with your lover. Fred’s is a more laid-back, informal sort of place. Take your pick!

Now… the wise choice would be to get a good night’s sleep because you have an action-packed day ahead of you tomorrow. But on the other hand, you’re on holiday, so if you feel like hitting a few bars, go for it!

Day Two In Cancun

Today is going to be a day of full-on adventures… with some great food and some nightlife thrown in. But first, time for breakfast. Whenever I’m in Cancun, my go-to breakfast joint is 100% Natural on the leafy Avenue Sunyaxchen. Serving colourful bowls, sumptuous farm-fresh produce, Mexican dishes and great coffee, you can set yourself up for the day with one stop. 

With breakfast sorted, it’s time to be picked up for your day of adventures. Bring sunblock, a hat, your swimmers, and a sense of adventure. The first stop will be the ancient Mayan ruins at Cichén Itzá 

Chichén  Itzá

This ruined Mayan city and temple complex was inhabited by the Mayan civilisation from 600 AD until 1,200 AD. Its central feature is the massive step pyramid known as El Castillo, aka the Temple of Kukulcan. 

Graphic sculptures are carved into the stone at the Temple of the Warriors and the Wall of the Skulls. It sounds like something out of an Indiana Jones story! It’s an amazing sight to behold and a must for any Cancun itinerary.

Swim in a cenote

From the sophisticated geometry of Chichén itzá, you will now head into the jungle and down into the shimmering depths of one of the 6,000 cenotes that dot the Riviera Mara area. Cenotes are natural sinkholes filled with emerald-blue water and draped with rainforest greenery. The Mayans believed that they were gateways into the underworld, and they’re still considered to be sacred places. 

One of the most popular cenotes is Ik Kil but it can get crowded with swimmers so if you can, try to visit Cenote XKeken and Cenote Samula.

Although they are side by side, the two cenotes are very different. Cenote Xkeken is like a mystical cave, with eerie-coloured stalactites hovering over a pool of turquoise water. Cenote Samula is an enclosed pool with a single opening overhead. This is an awesome place to go swimming – one of my favourite experiences in Mexico yet!

Wander around Valladolid

This charming colonial town is an undiscovered Mexican gem. With backstreets lined with colourful houses and all sorts of colonial buildings, a visit to Valladolid is a great addition to your itinerary for Cancun. These are just a few of the things you’ll find in this super cool town.

• Mercado Municipal. The colourful stalls at this large covered market in the centre of town are a great place to wander around and soak up the colour and aromas of fresh Mexican fruits and vegetables. 
• Meander down Calzada de los Frailes. This quiet, pedestrian thoroughfare has been described as “the prettiest street in Mexico.” Your Instagram is going to love the colours and shapes of this street!
• Casa de los Venados. Marvel at the Mayan art treasures in this private house. Inside this renovated hacienda you’ll find one of the largest collections of pre-Hispanic artwork in Mexico. It’s located just off the main square in the centre of town.
• Nightly Jarana dance performances. If you happen to be in Valladolid’s main square, the Parque Francisco Canton, at around 5:30pm you’ll encounter traditional Mayan dancers performing Jarana, a traditional dance unique to the Yucatan.

Day Three In Cancun

Today’s adventures are going to be built around sightseeing, underwater fun and chilled out island life!

You could take an organised tour like this one to the island or hire a car and make up your own itinerary for the day. Either way, it’s going to be fun!

Visit Isla Mujeres

This beautiful island lies a few kilometres off the coast  It has a cool, hippy vibe and feels really quiet after the bustle of Cancun. Golf carts and bikes are the only transport allowed on the island.

A great way to visit the island is aboard a catamaran. Lots of tour operators offer reasonable cruise packages, which include buffet lunch and snorkelling. 

Snorkel around MUSA: The Underwater Museum of Art

This amazing sculpture museum lies a few feet beneath the waves off Isla Mujeres. You can view the museum pieces from a glass-bottomed boat or snorkel around them. The exhibits include a group of people sitting around a table, a VW Beetle, a circle of upturned hands and single figures in various poses and postures. It is a surreal experience! 

You could book a SCUBA diving trip which might also take you to the Manchones Reef, further out in Isla Mujeres Bay. The marine life on this reef is stunning and there are also two more underwater sculptures: The Man on Fire and the Ernest Hemingway Desk .

Go Snorkelling with turtles in Akumal

Ready for another great underwater adventure? How about snorkelling with turtles in Akumal . As well as seeing the majestic sea turtles that live in the water just off stunning Akumal Beach, you’ll also spot a colourful array of marine life and coral. 

The reason that this underwater splendour can be found here is its proximity to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef which is the world’s second-largest reef system after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Now there’s a fun fact for your next quiz night! 

Back in Cancun after a busy day, head for some tacos at Taqueria Coapenitos down on Avenue Nader. They specialise in Latin dishes and serve some of the best tacos in town.

Day Four In Cancun

It’s been a hectic few days so how about treating yourself to a lie-in this morning? But not for too long… there’s still lots to do! Today will be all about soaking up some Mexican culture and sampling some incredible street food.

Visit Museo Maya

Featuring artefacts and displays from the many Mayan ruins found in the Cancun and Tulum area, the Museo Maya de Cancun is a must-see for anyone interested in this fascinating lost culture. It houses the world’s most complete collection of Mayan treasures and it is the sort of museum that you can return to again and again. The museum is open daily from Tuesday to Sunday.   

Go on a street food tour

The flavours of Mexico come alive in Cancun’s street food scene. You can wander around at random and discover all sorts of tasty delights around town or go on a guided street food walk with a knowledgeable local who knows all the best places. 

Alternatively, you could take a taco-tasting tour (now that’s an alliteration!) in nearby Puerto Morelos, with a few shots of tequila to wash them down!

Downtown street art

Cancun is rapidly becoming a world-renowned destination for lovers of street art. You’ll see everything from murals on garden walls to entire buildings decorated with art. You can combine a Cancun street art tour with a street food tour to get a real appreciation for these spectacular artworks.  

Pick up souvenirs at Markets 28 and 23

These two local markets are great places to pick up a few souvenirs or some jewellery to remember your trip. Mercado 28 has souvenir stalls and some unique jewellery outlets. Be prepared to haggle – it’s part of the fun.

Market 23 is a nice place to wander around and immerse yourself in Yucatan culture among the fruit and veggie stalls, taco sellers and other cheap eats.

Explore Avenida Tulum

Cancun’s main street is a great place for a stroll. There are wide pedestrian footpaths on both sides and a selection of shops, craft markets, galleries, bars and handicraft exhibitions to discover.

Shop at Malecon Americas shopping complex

This modern, open-air shopping complex is a popular weekend hangout for locals. All of Mexico’s big department stores are here along with ice cream stalls, and some excellent restaurants. The Malecon Tajamar lagoon is right across the street so when you tire of shopping you can go and enjoy the views with a refreshing drink.

Day Five In Cancun

Well, here we are on the last day of your holiday. It goes fast, doesn’t it? You could spend the day checking out a few more Mayan sites, head to one of the beaches to soak up some sun, or maybe indulge in a spa day. 

Visit Tulum’s Ruins

Tulum means “wall” in the Mayan language and these ruins beside the sea are enclosed by walls on three sides. This is a lovely place to wander, with the sound of the nearby ocean echoing around the stone walls of the temples and houses.

Pamper your body and soul

Just about every Cancun hotel has a spa with treatments, or a yoga class on offer. These are a few of my favourites.

• Awe Spa. This luxurious spa at the Moon Palace Hotel has a signature Hydrotherapy Journey package that is tailored to your exact needs. I’d also recommend the 80-minute, 4-hand Kukulcan massage. Bliss!
• Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita Riviera Maya Spa. Even the name of this luxury spa sounds relaxing. Try a Thalassotherapy treatment that includes heated seawater, seaweeds and warm marine mud.

• Vassa Spa. Overlooking the perfect sand of Azul Beach, this beautiful spa caters for families. Your massage can take place on the beach or in the tropical garden.
• Heavenly spa. This fancy spa in the Hotel Zone, overlooking the Caribbean, has six indoor treatment rooms and (my favourite) three terrace cabanas where you can be pampered to the sound of the breeze in the palm trees and the sigh of the ocean on the sand. Their signature Heavenly Massage speaks for itself.

A last night out

Feeling relaxed and rejuvenated after a day of pampering, you’ll be ready for one last night out before your flight home. After a few drinks while the sun goes down, and a slap-up dinner, you could hit the nightclubs for a last dance or two.

The most legendary is Coco Bongo , with its fast-paced music and dance show. Other lively options include The City nightclub and Senor Frogs . Both are world-famous for their rowdy shows, epic music and theme nights.

As you’ve seen, there are so many things to do in Cancun! You can take it as fast or slow as you fancy. A good idea might be to spend your first 3 days in Cancun getting up to all sorts of adventures, then relax and chill out for the final days of your trip. With ancient Mayan ruins, island tours, jungles, cenotes, and nightlife, you’re guaranteed to have an amazing holiday!

If I’m being honest, the main drag is very touristy and kind of terrible. It’s a good place to go for your stereotypical vacation but there’s not much more than that there. During spring break, college kids flock here to get drunk and tan so it’s best to avoid visiting then (unless you also want to partake in the rowdy festivities). This is a city that was built for tourists.

However, if you leave the main resort area of Cancun, you’ll find a city with friendly people, character, and amazing food. It’s real Mexico!

And, throughout the region, you’ll also find plenty of Mayan ruins and numerous cenotes.

Cancun has a lot more to it than just Senor Frogs, resorts, and drunk college kids, but you do have to go looking for it.

1. Explore Chichén Itzá

Chichén Itzá is a Mayan ruin dating back to 550 CE. It was home to an estimated 35,000 people – the most populous city in the Yucatan Peninsula. Historians believe the location was chosen due to its proximity to Xtoloc cenote, an underground freshwater source. Today, it is one of the largest (and most popular) Mayan archaeological sites in Mexico and one of the Wonders of the World. You can wander the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s ruins, including 5 square kilometers (1.9 square miles) of temples, intricately carved columns, tombs, and even ball courts. At the center of the ruins sits the famed El Castillo pyramid, a massive structure towering meters (98 feet). Entry is 571 MXN.

2. Explore the cenotes

In Cancun, you can find some of the world’s best underwater cenotes (natural pits or sinkholes that expose fresh groundwater) and cavern systems. The Yucatan Peninsula is famous for its cenotes, and they were an important resource for the ancient Maya. Popular cenotes near Cancun include Cenote Azul (150 MXN), Cenote Ik Kil (150 MXN), Gran Cenote (500 MXN), and Cenote Zahil Ha (200 MXN). Most are less than two hours away from the city by car.

3. Relax on Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres , which translates to “Women Island,” is just a short ferry ride away from Cancun. Originally a fishing village, the island maintains its charming atmosphere while being home to some 23,000 people. Kayaking, fishing, sailing, and swimming with sharks are popular activities here. You can enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving in the crystal clear Caribbean sea. The island is also a hatching ground for baby sea turtles.

4. Check out Cancun Underwater Museum

The Museo Subacuático de Arte features over 500 underwater sculptures in Cancun National Marine Park, which are designed to be platforms for coral growth to regenerate the damaged ecosystem. You can experience the magic via snorkeling, scuba diving, and glass-bottom boat tours. Since its founding in 2009, a lot of growth has occurred and every spring, more plants bloom. Snorkeling tours of the Underwater Museum cost around 965 MXN.

The downtown area is home to most of the colorful local craft markets in Cancun. Leather, silver, pottery, glassware, artwork, handicrafts, and traditional Mexican blankets are all sold here, making it the perfect place to browse, people-watch, and shop for souvenirs. It’s open daily from 9am-8pm.

2. Go clubbing

Cancun is famous for its nightlife. Most of the nightlife is concentrated around the Hotel Zone in an area aptly known as “party central.” Many of the world’s biggest DJs make regular appearances in the many clubs. During spring break, things get even more crowded and more expensive so be sure to book early if you’re visiting then. Coco Bongo, La Vaquita, and Grand Mambo Cafe are among the most popular places to go.

3. Hit the spa

Cancun is one of the top spa destinations in the world. There are tons of options to choose from, all offering varying treatments and package deals. Consider an ancient Mayan healing session or go with a classic massage. Temazcal Cancun offers massages for 900 MXN and is best known for its temazcal experiences. A type of sweat lodge, temazcal rituals date back to ancient Mesoamerica and were used to cleanse and purify after a battle, or to aid with healing the sick, as well as women giving birth. This experience lasts 2-3 hours and includes a temazcalero guide, volcanic stones, a bonfire, medicinal herbs, cleansing, and teas. The cost is 1,170 MXN.

4. Visit Museo Maya de Cancún

This museum is located on the south side of the Centro de Convenciones, Cancun’s convention center. Home to around 400 artifacts from important Mayan sites throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and throughout Mexico, the museum is one of the best sites in Mexico for learning about Mayan culture and history. Admission costs 70 MXN and includes access to the San Miguelito Archaeological Zone (an area of Mayan ruins).

5. Go diving

Cancun lies along the Great Mesoamerican Reef, the largest reef in the western hemisphere. The area has over 100 types of coral and more than 160 types of reef-inhabiting fish. There are also 5 different species of sea turtles here, making it a great place to spot local wildlife. Scuba diving costs around 2,700 MXN per person for a two-tank dive.

6. Swim with whale sharks at Isla Contoy

An easy day trip from Cancun, Isla Contoy is a small island nature reserve with stunning beaches and over 100 species of birds. It is also home to a large concentration of whale sharks. Whale sharks can grow up to 15 meters (almost 50 feet) in length but don’t worry, they are gentle giants! The island itself is small (it’s just 8.5 kilometers/5.3 miles long) and is only inhabited by a handful of biologists. Just 200 people are allowed on the island each day. You can book tours through a tour agency or hotel, or you can apply to visit with the park office in Cancun. Contoy Adventures is a well-known tour agency offering whale shark experiences for 3,260 MXN. Tours operate from May 20th until September 17th.

7. Take a cooking class

Cooking classes are one of the best ways to learn about a new culture (and the skills you learn are a great souvenir too). Mexico Lindo is one of the best in the Cancun area. Located in the jungle, the class duration is roughly 5.5 hours and includes breakfast, cooking a 6-course meal, snacks, and a tequila tasting. Cooking classes are scheduled Monday through Friday, with a different menu each day. The cost is 2,600 MXN.

8. Go on a taco tour

Street tacos are one of the best things about traveling in Mexico. Cancun Food Tours offers a 3.5-4.5-hour tour through downtown Cancun which includes a market tour and plenty of yummy taco tastings, with the opportunity to make your own tortillas, too. They also have vegetarian substitutions available as well. Tours cost 1,479 MXN per person.

Cancun Travel Costs

Hostel prices – Hostels are extremely affordable and plentiful in Cancun. There are 6-person dorm rooms for as little as 280 MXN, though 450 MXN is a more realistic price. For a private room, prices start at 1,000-1,500 MXN for a room that sleeps two. Most hostels offer free Wi-Fi and free breakfast.

Budget hotel prices There are plenty of budget hotels in Cancun with prices starting around 600 MXN per night for a room that sleeps two. You can find rooms in a 3-star hotel for as low as 950 MXN per night, which includes a private bathroom, Wi-Fi, and usually free breakfast as well.

For Airbnb, private rooms average around 590 MXN per night (though you can find places for as little as 300 MXN per night). However, there are very few private room options available here. Entire homes (including studio apartments) start from 800-1,500 MXN per night. Be sure to book early to find the best deals.

Food – You’ll find a lot of rice, beans, fruits, and veggies like tomatoes, corn, avocado, and peppers in Mexican cuisine. Typical Mexican dishes include tacos, salsa, enchiladas, tamales (stuffed corn pockets), pozole (hominy stew topped with onion, avocado, and chili), and guacamole.

Street stalls and markets are the bestplace to find authentic and inexpensive food. Tacos, quesadilla, sopas, tortas, and other street foods cost generally between 15-45 MXN. Sometimes, you’ll find tacos for as cheap as 10 MXN. In Mexico, street food is the best – and most affordable- option. It’s the tastiest too and you should eat it as much as possible. It’s not gonna make ya sick if you eat where other people are eating.

A beer is around 30 MXN but double that at a restaurant.

Restaurants found in the Hotel Zone or near the beach are good but they are expensive as they cater mostly to the tourists staying in the zone. You can expect to pay 500 MXN or more for a meal in these restaurants.

Closer to downtown, you’ll find a variety of restaurants with dishes between 120-300 MXN. Choose from sushi joints and cafés serving bagels, pizza and pasta, to Indian, Middle Eastern, and French restaurants. Try La Troje, Café Con Gracia, or Café Antoinette.

A meal at a Mexican restaurant serving traditional cuisine costs around 120-400 MXN. Look for the ones filled with locals as that is generally a sign that the food is really good.

Tap water is not safe to drink in Mexico. Bring a portable water purifier or use bottled water ( LifeStraw makes a good one.

If you plan to cook your meals, expect to pay between 500-585 MXN per week for groceries. This gets you staples like rice, vegetables, chicken, tortillas, and beans. However, with street food so cheap and most hostels and hotels lacking kitchens, it’s best to simply eat local rather than cook.

Backpacking Cancun Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Cancun, expect to spend 1,000 MXN per day. This budget gets you a hostel dorm, street food and self-cooked meals, public transportation to get around, and mostly free or cheap activities like snorkeling and enjoying the beach. If you’re drinking a lot, I’d add another 100-300 MXN per day depending on how much you want to party.

On a mid-range budget of 1,800 MXN per day, you can stay in a private Airbnb, eat at restaurants serving cheap traditional cuisine, enjoy a few drinks, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do more paid activities like cooking classes or museum visits.

On a “luxury” budget of 3,800 MXN or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals anywhere you want, have plenty of drinks, take taxis everywhere or rent a car, and do some guided food or mezcal tours. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in MXN.

Cancun Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Outside the resort and tourist area, Cancun, like the rest of Mexico, won’t break the bank. Inside that area, everything is priced for tourists and you’ll burn through your money pretty easily. Here are some ways to save in Cancun to help you keep your budget intact:

• Eat street food – The street stalls that line the streets in Mexico are safe to eat at and provide the cheapest and tastiest food around. If you don’t want to eat there, find restaurants that cater to locals. If you start eating that’s designed for tourists, you’ll pay triple what you should.
• Travel off-peak – Try to visit Cancun in the off-season (between June and November) as accommodation is significantly cheaper.
• Stay with a local – Don’t want to book a room at a resort? Use Couchsurfing to stay with locals who have extra beds and couches for free. You’ll not only save money on accommodation but you’ll get to connect with a local who can share their insider tips and advice.
• Save money on rideshares – Uber is cheaper than taxis and is the best way to get around a city if you don’t want to wait for a bus or pay for a taxi.
• Being a water filter – Since the tap water here isn’t safe to drink and single-use plastic is bad for the environment, bring a water filter. LifeStraw makes reusable bottles with a built-in filter so you can ensure your water is always clean and safe.

How to Get Around Cancun

Public transportation – Cancun is pretty easy to get around. The bus runs 24 hours and fares cost 8.50 MXN. Try to have exact change as drivers cannot break big bills.

Taxi – In Cancun, taxis are not metered, but 30 MXN is a good guideline for city center travel. I’d skip the taxis if you can though as they add up fast.

Ridesharing – Uber is available here and is cheaper than taxis. A ride from the hotel zone to downtown costs around 198 MXN.

Bicycle – Cancun isn’t ideal for cycling but if you want to get around by bike, rentals cost 220-350 MXN per day.

When to Go to Cancun

Summer (May to October) is the rainy season in Cancun. You can expect it to rain each day heavily, but the downpour is usually short. Temperatures during this time are somewhere between 24-32°C (75-90°F).

From the beginning of August to the end of November is hurricane season and is not a good time to visit.

December to the end of April (winter) is the busiest tourist season and Cancun is packed with travelers from all over North America and Europe. This is the best time to visit if you’re looking to take advantage of Mexico’s tropical environment. The hotel zone is overflowing at times, so think about staying outside the zone if you’re on a budget. The average daily temperature during this time is 28°C (82°F). Prices are also higher during this time, especially in the hotel zone.

Spring break is probably one of the busiest times in Cancun as college and university students flock to the hotels and hostels. It is a crazy party and things can become very crowded very quickly. Prices also spike during this time, especially near the beaches. I would avoid coming here during this time unless you really want to splash out and party.

Note: If you plan to do anything in the ocean, be sure to pack biodegradable sunscreen before you leave for your trip. The guides on your snorkeling/diving excursions sometimes won’t tell you until the last minute that regular sunscreen is not allowed (it’s damaging to the coral and overall water quality).

How to Stay Safe in Cancun

Cancun has long been the playground of tourists from throughout North America and Europe. As with most tourist hotspots, the most common crimes here are pickpocketing and bag snatching. This is especially common in crowded areas and on the beach when you’re not paying attention. Make sure to always keep your valuables secure and out of reach.

Overall, dangerous crimes against tourists are uncommon here (it’s mostly jsut petting crime). The people who do tend to be involved in incidents are usually doing drugs or taking part in sex tourism. Avoid all of that and you’ll greatly reduce your risks here.

During busy times like spring break, petty crime increases. Don’t leave drinks unattended and be vigilant with your valuables. Be careful and aware of your surroundings when withdrawing your cash from an ATM. When possible, use indoor ATMs just to be safe.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here but you’ll definitely want to keep an eye on your drinks, avoid walking alone late at night outside busy areas and just keep a watchful eye. Despite the glitz, this isn’t one of the safest parts of Mexico. For specific tips, check out one of the many solo female travel blogs on the city.

If an emergency occurs, dial 911. If that doesn’t work (since 911 isn’t available everywhere), dial 066.

Always trust your gut instinct. Avoid isolated areas at night, don’t wander around alone at night, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. And make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

24 Useful Cancun Tips & Advice: What to Know Before You Go

Headed to Cancun on your vacation and looking for tips on how to have the best time? First you should know that you’re likely to have a lot of fun. But visiting a foreign country — no matter how much it caters to tourists — can lead to all sorts of questions about what to expect.

The good news? Cancun definitely does cater to American tourists. That makes many things more familiar than they would if you visiting somewhere further abroad (for instance, you can easily get by speaking English).

Below, we’ve rounded up our top tips and advice for visiting Cancun. Covering everything from money to getting around to safety, these are pointers that you don’t want to go without — especially if it’s your first time visiting.

Your Phone Will Likely Work in Cancun

While you still need to double check with your carrier, there’s a good chance that your cell phone will work in Mexico with no additional charge. Even if it doesn’t, you can often add service in Mexico for as little as $5.

Over the past several years, the fight for your cell phone service has led many carriers to offer new perks. One of those is service in Mexico and Canada. Many plans today have Mexico included automatically in the plan for no extra charge. There’s no need to get a new SIM card or jump through hoops.

And if it’s not included? Call your provider and tell them you’re headed to Mexico. They can tell you the options you have for service in Cancun. Often you can get service extended to the country for about $5-$10 per day.

Book a Hotel with an Airport Shuttle to Save

The Cancun airport is near the famous Hotel Zone, but it’s still a bit of a drive. You can book your own transportation like a taxi or shuttle, but it’s a lot easier just to stay at a hotel with free airport shuttle service . These shuttles can take you directly to your hotel and back to the airport without having to deal about a third-party. Simply let the hotel know you’ll need a ride and hop on when you land.

Shuttle Transfers Are the Cheapest Way to the Hotel

You can take a taxi, but if you want the cheapest way to the hotel zone — and with a set price that you pay before you arrive — then look at one of the many shuttles that offer Cancun service. With so many people flying into Cancun and heading to the hotels, there is a thriving industry of shuttles. That competition leads to some low prices.

Simply Google “Cancun shuttles” to see a number of your options. A one-way ride should be about $20-30 per person. Of course, you can also just use the hotel’s shuttle for free if staying at a place that offers one.

No Need to Worry About Pesos

There are advantages of using pesos to purchase items in Mexico, but in the tourist hotspots like Cancun, U.S. dollars are widely accepted. In fact, bills from restaurants will come with a price that’s both in pesos and dollars and you can choose which way you want to pay. Note that you’ll often pay less using pesos because of the exchange rate charged by the establishment. Still, if you don’t want to change money over, you don’t have to. Keep in mind you might get change for dollars back in pesos.

Sunscreeen: Love It and Wear It

Even if you come to Cancun from a hot place — like Texas or Florida — you still aren’t quite prepared for the sun at lower latitudes. Here the sun’s rays are more direct, meaning that you get their impact much more quickly than you would back home. In other words, use sunscreen and reapply often. This isn’t so much for health reasons, but your enjoyment of your vacation. You don’t want to be locked inside the room because you got burned on your first day at the beach.

Take Advantage of Hotels with Childcare

If you’re a family traveling to Cancun, take advantage of one perk that many hotels now offer — childcare. A number of hotels have all sorts of amenities for kids (including child waterparks) and you can even drop them off while the staff keeps the kiddos entertained for the day. Use “20” to Roughly Figure Exchange Rates

Need to know how much something is in dollars? Just take the price in pesos and divide it by 20 to get a rough estimate. Likewise, you can use “20” times the amount of dollars to figure out how much it is in pesos. While the exchange rate isn’t going to be exactly 20 pesos to the dollar (it’s actually closer to 17.5 to $1 as of this writing), it’s close enough to give you an idea.

Take something that costs 800 pesos. Divide by 20, and you know it’s about $40 in U.S. currency. Likewise, if you want to know how much something is in pesos that costs $20 U.S., then multiply it by 20 to see that it would cost 400 pesos.

There’s a Lot of Natural Beauty Nearby

Most people head to Cancun and head straight for the hotel. That’s perfectly ok. With stunning beaches, why wouldn’t you want to spend some time soaking it in?

But truth is there is a lot of natural scenery and beauty outside the city as well. Cenotes (natural swimming holes) have the absolute clearest water you’ll ever see. Nearby islands like Isla Mujeres offer pristine beaches, as well as some beautiful rugged shoreline. Snorkeling, diving, and adventure parks are also nearby and offer a fun way to get out and see some of this gorgeous part of Mexico.

Enjoy hanging out at the hotel, but don’t think it’s all high-rises in the area.

Know the Right Time to Travel for Your Vacation

You can travel to Cancun year-round, but there are some times that may be better than others. Summers are hot, with frequent thunderstorms that can blow up seemingly out of nowhere. June through November are hurricane season, and yes, hurricanes can impact this area of the tropics.

Many people prefer to visit in the winter, but this is the high season where rates rise due to snowbirds looking for a warm place to visit.

That’s why we don’t think there is a perfect time to visit Cancun, but just be aware of the general outlook for the time you do plan to visit. As close to perfect as you can get is around April or May when it’s plenty warm, but winter is over in North America (so prices are lower) and hurricane season isn’t yet underway.

ATMs Are Ideal for the Best Exchange Rate

The two ways to get the most favorable exchange rate are to use a credit card, or to take cash out at an ATM. We understand that many people may not be comfortable using their card abroad for risk of identity theft or skimming. If you do plan to use cash, you’re better off using an ATM than trying to change money in the airport or at another exchange booth. You’ll get a favorable rate that’s as close to the real exchange rate as you’ll find.

Be Prepared for “Propinas” (Tips)

If you’re Spanish isn’t great, a propina is a tip. By the time you leave Cancun, you’ll definitely know the word. As a tourist destination, people’s incomes rely on the cash that tourism brings. That means just about everyone will expect a tip. That includes drivers, waiters, maids, and whomever else provides any sort of direct service. How much to tip depends on you, but figure about 10% of the bill, or a few bucks a day for things like housekeeping.

The Drinking Age is 18 in Mexico

Headed to Cancun for Spring Break? If you’re a college student, it may be that you aren’t old enough to drink in the United States (21 years), but in Mexico the drinking age in 18 years old.

Even so, there are some rules you should know. Open containers are illegal in public, and drinking on public streets and public drunkenness are also against the law.

Be Ready to Negotiate With Vendors

Find a souvenir that you like? In most shops that price on the item is a starting point for negotiations. You’ll get a feel quickly for where you can haggle and where you can’t. Places that seem like the kind of stores you’d find back home usually have set prices. But smaller vendors you can negotiate with.

The rule of thumb is to offer about half of what the item is listed at, and then work yourself up from there.

Don’t feel comfortable negotiating? You’re on vacation. You shouldn’t do anything you don’t want to do. It’s ok to pay full price, just know that it might not be the best deal.

Make Sure You’re Drinking Purified Water… and Ice

Even today it’s a good idea to still drink purified water and ice when you are visiting Mexico. For the most part you don’t have to worry about it — it’s common knowledge so the restaurants go out of their way to either serve you a bottle or let you know that the water and ice is purified.

Still, if you aren’t sure, it doesn’t hurt to ask if both the drinking water and ice are purified. A little prevention by being careful and making sure can help you save a lot of stomach ache later on.

Be Prepared for the “Hawks” at the Airport

Maybe it’s a rude description of people just trying to make a living, but it can feel like you’re a mouse walking out of the Cancun airport with “hawks” circling you. That’s a nickname for all the folks selling everything from timeshares to taxi rides to rental cars.

The good news is that they will take no for an answer… but they will definitely make you say no again and again. Simply let them know you aren’t interested in their services with a polite “no, gracias” and they will usually move on to the next person.

There Are a Number of Great Day Trips From Cancun

There’s actually a lot to do and see in the areas outside the city. Want to visit a picturesque tropical island? Visit Isla Mujeres, just off the coast of Cancun. There’s Chichen Itza, Tulum, Akumal, cenotes, adventure parks, and more — all within a few hours (or much less) of the Hotel Zone.

If you’re anxious about driving in Mexico, don’t worry. There are tour companies that can arrange everything for you. Just look online to see what’s available.

You Might “Win the Prize” In the Airport

Ok, it’s not a real prize, so don’t get your hopes up. Passing through customs, each person will walk up to a red and green light. Hit a button and hope that you get green (most people do). If you get green, then you’ll pass right on through and leave the airport. Those who get the red light are stopped and have their bags inspected. Don’t think you did anything wrong or look suspicious. It’s a random draw as to who gets green and who gets red.

Keep Your Wits About You While Having a Good Time

Cancun is known for its nightlife, and if you are staying in the Hotel Zone, it’s not far to the bars and nightclubs. Go out, have a great time, and make some friends. But it’s important to keep your wits about you. Remember, you are in a foreign country and while it might seem Americanized, you are still bound to follow the rules and laws of Mexico. Don’t think that it is a “Disney” experience where nothing bad can happen or that the laws don’t really apply.

Safety Is Relatively Good in the Hotel Zone

You likely have heard about the sharp rise in violence in Cancun. Over the past several years, the murder rate has increased dramatically. This isn’t to scare you, but simply make you aware of what’s going on.

The good news is that the tourist areas of Cancun like the Hotel Zone have been largely spared of this violence. There have been a few isolated incidents, but nothing like is seen in other parts of town. Remember that millions of Americans each year take trips to the area and there are few problems as long as you stay in the safer tourist areas.

Be Ready For Guards with Big Guns

If can be a bit unnerving until you realize they are there to keep things safe. When you first arrive to Cancun, be ready to see military and police carrying some rather large assault-style weapons. This show of force is meant to dissuade anyone from trying anything funny and also to show tourists that the area is secure. But if you aren’t used to it, the weapons can come as a shock.

Visit the Museo Maya de Cancun

It’s doubtful that culture comes to mind when you think of a tourist mecca like Cancun, but the area is steeped in a lot of history. You can learn by visiting the Museo Maya de Cancun . A beautiful new facility that opened just a few years ago, the museum is highly rated on TripAdvisor . It features tons of Mayan artifacts that tell the history of the indigenous people. There is also more about the Mayan culture and actual ruins (San Miguelito) that you can explore. It’s an amazing gem that’s in the middle of the resorts.

You’re Going to Need a Passport (With at Least 6 Months Left)

Sorry, no way around it. The days of visiting Mexico without a passport are over. These days you’ll need a passport if you are flying into Cancun. And while you can get them in a short time frame before your trip, it’s best to have it before you plan your trip.

One more tip — be sure the passport doesn’t expire for at least six months after your trip. In fact, if your passport expires within the next year, go ahead and renew it before you go.

Be Ready for Rain Showers

Head to Cancun in the wet season that runs from May through October and you should be prepared for some rainy afternoons. During the summer there can be pop-up showers that drench an area, only to be sunny just a few minutes later. Want to avoid the rain? Try to plan your trip in February, March, or April, when the rainfall is only a few inches per month.

Know About Issues With Tainted Alcohol

It made headlines not that long ago, but has since gone quiet; we’re talking about the issue of tainted alcohol. A number of people reported to have a couple of drinks at resorts and then suddenly blacking out without any recollection of what had happened . After some newspapers in the United States began investigating, the authorities cracked down on supplies of tainted alcohol. Still, while the headlines have died down, it’s smart for you to know about issues with liquor. Try to drink from unopened bottles if you can. If not, go slowly and make sure you have others around that can help should something go wrong.

In this detailed post, you will find some sample itineraries from Cancun for 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 days with alternative options, the best area to stay in Cancun, and all the practical tips you need to know before traveling.

Cancun Itinerary at a Glance

This Cancun itinerary is packed with things to do because I thought you may want to make the most of it during your stay in Cancun.

However, you can switch around the day or switch a day out with a day basking in the sun, especially if you are in an All-inclusive hotel on the beach, by all means! You are on vacation it shouldn’t feel like work!😂

Day 1 – Cancun highlights: Isla Blanca – El Meco – Mercado 23 – Playa Delfines – El Rey – La Isla (sunset)

Day 2 – Explore the Yucatan Peninsula: Chichen Itza – Valladolid – Cenote

Day 3 – Boat tour (or ferry): Isla Mujeres

Day 4 – Tulum bound: Tulum Archeological Site – Tulum Beach – Cenote

Day 5 – Cancun backyard: Cancun Cenote near Puerto Morelos + Lunch on the beach, relax in your hotel

The complete Cancun Itinerary 3 to 7 days

Day 1 – cancun highlights.

On your first day in Cancun, you either want to spend all day in your spectacular all-inclusive hotel on the beach or you can’t wait to explore and see as much as possible of Cancun.

Either way, I think a day trip itinerary in Cancun would be perfect. I have included the top Cancun sites for a day packed with things to do but you can skip some of them if you don’t feel like doing everything.

It would be ideal if you had a car so it would be much easier to move around. As I mentioned before along the Cancun Hotel Zone you can take the R1 or R2 buses but to get to Mercado 23 or Isla Blanca it gets complicated.

If you don’t have your own car, ask your hotel for a recommended taxi driver.

8.30 am – Isla Blanca

start your day with one of the most spectacular and off-the-beaten-path beaches of Cancun, Isla Blanca .

Keep in mind that there is nothing there, so we won’t stay too long so that you can explore more of Cancun. Also, you would get there early morning so the sun is not too strong. Regardless, remember to bring:

• sunscreen, hat, water, and towels

10.30 am – El Meco archeological site

Situated on the way to Isla Blanca you can stop by on the way back. It won’t take long to visit as it’s very small but definitely worth it. The ancient Mayan ruins are surrounded by a lush tropical jungle home to birds, squirrels and iguanas among others. You may be able to see a family of the funny Coaties hanging around.

El Meco archaeological site entry fee – 55 MXN

12.30 pm – Mercado 23

On the way back to the hotel zone you can make a detour and check out Mercado 23 where the locals hang out. This is a real authentic market where you can find local produce and all sorts of food. You can try the local restaurant for some authentic Mexican tacos, quesadillas, or tortas (Mexican Sandwiches)

14.00 pm – El Rey

El Rey is another small but interesting ancient ruin located right by the beach in Cancun opposite to Playa Delfines.

El Rey ruins entry fee: 60 MXN

15 pm – Playa Delfines and Cancun colorful sign

Playa Delfines is one of the most popular attractions in Cancun together with the colorful Cancun sign located right on the lookout terrace, with the spectacular turquoise Caribbean sea as a backdrop.

Playa Delfines is an equipped public beach where you can find bathrooms and showers, sunbeds and shades for rent. Before rushing to the beach make sure you take a minute to enjoy the view from the lookout terrace.

When I was younger and I just arrived in Cancun, I used to get there at 6 am to take surf lessons. I was happily surprised to find out that the surf school is still there and there are actually more surf schools in Cancun now.

Although this area is not the best surfing spot in Mexico you can still find good waves and take classes if you want to learn. Check out Good vibes surf school as well.

Otherwise, you can just take nice walks on the beach and relax after a long morning exploring Cancun

5 pm – Plaza La Isla

I love hanging out in Plaza La Isla around sunset times, window shopping, or maybe even shopping, and stopping by the Nichupte lagoon to watch the sun setting over the Cancun skyline.

Keep in mind that the sun sets around 6 to 630 in winter and 7.30 in the summer.

After sunset, you can decide whether to go back to the hotel and get dressed for dinner or, just stay out for dinner in Plaza la Isla since there are many delicious restaurants to choose from.

In my guide to the Cancun Restaurants , I mention Elefanta (Indian) and Thai Cancun that I particularly love, and are located right on the lagoon.

Alternative things to do in Cancun on day 1 of your itinerary

If you think that this plan is not for you, you may want to check out other things that you can do in Cancun on your day-1. Here is a list

✔️ Relax on the beach in one of the all-inclusive hotels – If you chose among the spectacular Cancun All-inclusive resorts I suppose you want to spend at least one day in the resort enjoying the beautiful If you are not staying in a resort on the beach, worry not.

Many hotels offer a day pass option, where you can pay a fee that usually includes lunch and drinks and the use of beach beds and hotel facilities.

✔️ Join a tour on the Nichupte’ Lagoon – The Nichupte’ Lagoon is a spectacular huge body of water that separates Cancun Downtown from the Hotel Zone. It’s home to a wealth of wildlife and a great place to practice all sorts of watersports.

There are different tours that take you to explore the Nichupte lagoon. Here are my favorite ones:

👉 Sunset boat tour – One is a 4-hour tour at sunset by a small fisherman boat cruising around the mangroves spotting the wildlife and watching the sunset that you can drive yourself. Another one, more eco-friendly and fun, in my opinion, is kayaking either at sunrise or sunset. ↳ BOOK IT HERE

👉 Kayaking in the Nichupte’ lagoon – this is more ecological but requires some work on your end 😜. Kayaking is not easy but doable. The Nichupte’ lagoon doesn’t have strong currents so you should be ok even if you don’t have a lot of experience. They have tours at sunrise and sunset, both amazing. BOOK IT HERE

✔️ Go scuba-diving – If you are a certified diver you cannot miss the chance to dive here. Scuba diving in Cancun is a great experience ad a choice among many different dive sites, including a shipwreck and the MUSA underwater museum, among others.

Day 2 – Explore the Yucatan Peninsula

On day 2, my suggestion is to explore the cradle of the Mayan heritage in the heart of Yucatan and visit one of the 7 wonders and UNESCO World Heritage site Chichen Itza.

8.30 am Chichen Itza – The majestic site is definitely a must if you have never seen it before. Include El Castillo (the largest pyramid) the thousands column, the observatory, the ball game field, and the sacred cenote, among others.

If you don’t go on an organized tour you should hire one of the certified guides that you will find at the entrance of the site.

Try to get there by 8.30/9 am to avoid the crowd.

12.00 Valladolid – at only 45 minute drive from Chichen Itza you will find the pretty colonial town of Valladolid. It’s worth taking a walk around the iconic plaza and walk along the Calzada de los Frailes to the Convent.

Along that road, you will find some local restaurants where you can have your lunch. There are many vegan and vegetarian options as well. Although Valladolid is a popular tourist destination, it conserves the old town’s charm.

3.30 pm – You can either visit the cenote Zaci which is located only 2 blocks from the main square, or you can explore further many different hidden cenotes around Valladolid.

For this day, the best option is to rent a car and drive around at your own pace. This way you will manage to skip the lines and enjoy the day in peace and tranquillity.

If renting a car is not an option for you, there are many amazing organized tours, which include transportation, a guide, and a stop at a cenote and Valladolid.

Alternative things to do in Cancun on day 2

If you have been to Chichen Itza already, I would suggest checking out Coba archeological site. It’s only 2 hours drive from Cancun if you take the internal road, skipping Tulum.

You can check out the Coba archeological site and the spectacular Coba cenotes in the area.

If you don’t feel like driving you can always check out an organized tour from Cancun to Coba.

Day 3 – Boat tour (or ferry)

If you are staying 3 days in Cancun you cannot miss a boat tour – Your 3 day Cancun Itinerary couldn’t end better than with a boat tour to Isla Mujeres. After two days spent exploring the cultural stuff and the magic of the Yucatan peninsula, on day 3 of your Cancun itinerary, we are going to take it easy and relax.

Isla Mujeres is a pretty Mexican island located just 30 minutes ferry ride off the Cancun coast.

There are different ways to visit Isla Mujeres , here they are:

► Spend a couple of days on the island

This is ideal if you have plenty of time ad want to relax on the north beach or in a luxury boutique hotel in Isla Mujeres. There are quite a few options available. You can check out my post about Cancun vs Isla Mujeres to see which destination is the right fit for you.

► Take the ferry and explore Isla Mujeres on your own

Enjoy a quick ferry ride while you admire the spectacular turquoise waters of the Caribbean sea. Those colors only are worth the trip.

The ferry lives from different locations, one in Puerto Juarez , and other locations in the hotel zone such as Playa Tortuga and Playa Caracol . Check out the rates and schedule on the Ultramar ferry site

Once you get to Isla Mujeres you can rent a golf cart and explore the island, which is only 5 km long and bask in the beautiful playa norte, the perfect place where to swim and enjoy the crystal clear calm waters.

► Join a catamaran tour

The other option is to join a catamaran tour which usually includes a snorkeling stop, lunch, and some free time in Isla Mujeres.

Some tours combine the spectacular protected reserve Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres in only one trip which is great if you are short of time and you want to see as much as possible. Here below the top-rated tours.

Day 4 – Tulum bound (4-day Cancun Itinerary)

Your 4-day Cancun itinerary ends with Tulum, an unmissable spot on the Riviera Maya. Located about 95 km from Cancun on the Riviera Maya, Tulum is one of the trendiest beach destinations in Mexico.

Europeans usually prefer staying in Tulum rather than Cancun but they are both great destinations, just different.

If you are based in Cancun you can visit Tulum on a day trip either by car or choosing one of the existing tours.

If you go on your own I would visit first the Tulum archeological site before it gets crowded and hot, and then you can hit the beach for some swimming time and lunch in one of the Tulum Beach Club.

I love Posada Margherita and Cinco Tulum.

Then you can visit one of the Cenote near Tulum and on the way back to Cancun you can stop by the spectacular Xpu-ha Beach or Yalku-lagoon , near Akumal beach one main attractions in the area.

Alternative things to do in Cancun on day 4

This 4-day Cancun itinerary is well-packed with all the major highlights in Cancun and the surroundings but you may also want to consider just chilling for one day and enjoying your resort facilities or one of the stunning Cancun Beach Clubs.

Day 5 – Cancun backyard

I like to call Puerto Morelos Cancun Backyard as the pretty underrated town is located only 30 minutes drive from Cancun Cancun.

Here you can check out some of the Cenotes of the Ruta Puuc, take a boat tour to the coral reefs from the beach, and eat in one of the seafood restaurants on the beach. My favorite one is El Merkadito.

You can rent a car and easily get there on your own or, you can join some of the organized tours available.

Alternative things to do in Cancun on day 5

If you don’t feel like moving from Cancun you can always do some boat tours. If it’s from June through September I would recommend swimming with whale sharks . It’s an unforgettable experience. Here is one of the top-rated tours.

Day 6 – Playa del Carmen day

On day 6 of our Cancun Itinerary, we’ll head out to check out some spectacular beaches on the Riviera Maya, and some cenotes and we’ll stop by the vibrant beach town of Playa del Carmen.

It’s advisable to rent a car for better comfort but this itinerary is definitely doable by bus.

First stop: Cenotes on the Riviera Maya – Leave Cancun around 8 am – if you want to take the bus, get to the ADO station and hop on the Playa Express mini vans right opposite the ADO entrance or the ones on the other side of the Av. Tulum.

They will take you to Playa del Carmen, and from there you will hop on one of the minivans that go to Tulum and stop at Cenote Azul.

Right there you have so many cenotes options to choose from or you can see them all. It’s cenote Azul, Cenote Cristalino, Cenote Eden, and the Cenote park Chikin-ha . They are all close to each other and close to where the van will drop you off.

PRO TIP – Mind that the ADO bus doesn’t stop there. You need to get the minivan (colectivo or combi) and ask the driver to drop you off at Cenote Azul.

2nd Stop – Xpu-ha Beach – After enjoying the cenotes you can go back to the main road ( federal highway) and wait for the next COMBI to arrive. Hail at them and they will stop. Tell the driver to drop you off at Xpuha beach. it’s just 6 km from Cenote Azul.

You will have to cross the road, so be careful because cars and trucks travel at a very high speed. And then you have to walk for about 600 mt to reach on a dirt road to reach the spectacular Xpuha beach.

There you will find restaurants and beach chairs for rent or you can walk a little further north if you want to stay more isolated from the crowd.

3rd stop – Playa del Carmen – when you are tired of the beach or maybe you think you had enough sun, you head back on the main road where you catch your minivan in the direction of Playa Del Carmen.

There you can take a stroll on the famous Quinta Avenida, sit in one of the trendy bars for an aperitif and you can even wait for dinner in one of the local restaurants. La Cueva del Chango is one of them and the top rate on TripAdvisor is “The traveler table” ( I have never tried that but it has excellent reviews).

Or you can just head back to Cancun either by combi or ADO bus or of course your car if you rented it.

Day 7 – Long day out (7-day Cancun Itinerary)

If you were lucky enough to complete the full 7-day Cancun Itinerary, on your last day you can either relax on the beach or add one more exciting adventure to your vacation.

My first choice would be to visit the Protected Natural Reserve of Rio Lagartos + Las Coloradas and the ancient Mayan ruins of Ek Balam, one of my favorites.

A certified tour guide will take you around the spectacular Sian Ka’an Biosphere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its diversity of landscapes, flora, and fauna.

After seeing the hidden gem of Muyil Mayan Ruins, you will walk through mangroves and tropical vegetation until you reach your boat to navigate the ancient canals used by the Mayas in the pre Hispanic times.

You will have time to swim in the lazy river and have a nice lunch before heading back to Cancun.

Things to do in Cancun at night

What I love about Cancun is that it has everything for anyone and if you are a party lover you can also find many opportunities and places to dance the night away.

The Coco Bongo is an institution to see great performances and dance in between. Otherwise other places are Mandala and the Hip Hop Nightclub experience among others.

What if you are not a party person? (like me) Well, there are many other things we can do at night, besides a lovely dinner in one of the fine Cancun restaurants or in one of the on-site restaurants of your hotel. Here below some ideas.

If you are wondering how many days are enough in Cancun , the short answer is it depends on how many days you have available and what you want to do with your time.

Some people prefer to have a base for the entire travel time and do small day trips, others prefer to rent a car and spend the night close to the attraction they are visiting.

There is no right or wrong here. It all boils down to what you feel like doing and what sort of vacation you want to have.

I would say two days are enough to explore Cancun and do some of the tours, but if you want to stay longer, I assure you, you won’t get bored. It’s a promise.

How to get to Cancun?

Whether you are flying from another country or from any other city in Mexico, Cancun international airport is the closest and most convenient airport to fly into.

Cancun is one of the most trafficked airports in Mexico after Mexico city which means that you have a lot of great connections with the major hubs from the United States and Europe with the best chance to find great deals.

I suggest you should check on n  Expedia for flight or package deals as they always have the latest offers.

How to get around Cancun?

If you are wondering, there is Uber in Cancun, but it’s complicated . Even though the law finally approved the car-shared services a few years ago, many taxi drivers didn’t approve of it and showed their disagreement with violent actions.

However, the taxi association decided to meet the UBER car share company halfway and now some taxi drivers have also joined. However, you can use it in the Hotel Zone or in the proximity of a taxi stand. 

How to get Cancun International Airport to your hotel

There are many ways to get to your hotel from Cancun airport. The easiest way, and my favorite one, is a door-to-door private shuttle service offered by Cancun Airport Transportation because it’s all about comfort and convenience. Cancun Airport Transportation staff speak English, are reliable, and professional, and provide a minimum waiting time service!

Public transportation

The public transportation options within the Cancun area are not very convenient unless you stay in the Hotel Zone, in which case you could hop on and off the R1 and R2 public buses for approximately 10 MXN.

To travel around the Yucatan Peninsula (Day 2 and Day 4 of your Cancun itinerary) you can use the ADO buses or the minivans (colectivos), when possible.

Sometimes, I love to join tours when they combine different attractions and destinations that would be impossible to visit by bus in one day simply because there aren’t enough connections or because buses don’t even get there.

Tours are also the best option for water-related activities, such as snorkeling or scuba diving in Cancun , which is amazing.

Also if you have little time and want to see as much as possible, tours are great and you also have a knowledgeable tour guide that will share useful historical and cultural data.

Car Rentals

However, my favorite way to explore Cancun and Mexico overall, is by renting a car, because you have the freedom to make your own itinerary, change it when you want, and drive at your own pace.

If you want to use a local car rental, instead, I often use MexrentaCar . Their customer service leaves a lot of room for improvement, but every now and then they offer great deals and full insurance.

Driving in Cancun is quite easy although it may take some time to get the hang of it, just like when you rent a car in any foreign country.

Travel Insurance

Do I need travel insurance to travel to Cancun? Yes, you do. I actually purchase my travel insurance everywhere I go just to have peace of mind, one of the most important aspects of my travels.

If you ask me I have two recommended sites, one is  SafetyWings , which I find relatively affordable and quite comprehensive.

You fill out the form with the information about your profile and requirements and they select the insurance company that is a good fit.

Where to stay in Cancun

While planning your Cancun itinerary you may need to decide where to stay in Cancun.

Luckily for you, there are many different options, whether you want to stay right on the beach or in town, from all-inclusive resorts to affordable hostels , small hotels, or apartments.

Is Cancun safe?

The short answer is yes, Cancun is relatively safe to travel to and to get out of your resort and explore. There is a crime in Cancun and there have been quite a few unpleasant episodes. The positive part of it is that those were all drug and cartel-related and if you stay away from that, you should not have any issues.

Also I believ e driving in Cancun is safer than taking a taxi or a bus.

However make sure you don’t do silly things that may put your life in danger, be aware of your surrounding, and if you go out at night avoid dark isolated streets and keep an eye on your drink. Also, don’t get wasted, please!

Cancun is also a great solo female traveler destination but make sure you use common sense and stay aware of your surroundings, avoiding shady areas, especially at night, including walking on the beach alone at night, which is not recommended.

Among other things you should watch out for are, mosquitos (use repellent), strong currents in the sea, sunstrokes, and tap water (don’t drink it).

Use a refillable water bottle instead and fill it up in your hotel or restaurant and always take it with you. More about it later in this post.

Cancun by season in a nutshell

June – October – (summer)  – Cancun wet season – more chance of rain (and hurricanes) and higher temperatures. Sargasso will most likely show up in these months. The Sea is warmer and Hotel prices are lower.

December through April (winter)  – Cancun dry season – Winter is also called the dry season when the weather cools down a bit and the sky is blue and sunny. The water temperature is cooler as well though, but it’s less likely to rain.

For this reason, it’s also called High Season and you will find the highest hotel prices in Cancun and anywhere in Mexico actually. It’s also the most crowded, hence the higher prices.

Whether you are a spring breaker or you want to avoid spring breakers, keep in mind that March and April are usually the months when you will find parties all over the place and packed hotels that welcome this kind of tourism.

Shoulder season (spring)- from after Easter through the beginning of June – That is my favorite season when you can find great deals, there are no big crowds and it’s not so hot and humid yet.

Shoulder season (fall) – mid-September – November  – During this shoulder season you will find more risk of rain and hurricane until the end of October. it’s really hot and humid until the end of October when it’s starting to get better. The sargassum is leaving the Mexican Caribbean coasts. The water temperature is still pleasant.

Behind strong spring break, Milwaukee airport sees strong passenger totals in March, first quarter

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport continued its strong start to 2024 as passenger traffic continued to rise.

That’s due to what an airport official said was very strong traffic to international destinations during spring break. The airport also saw a continued increase in available destinations or the restoration of service that was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.  

Passenger traffic from January through March, the most recent available data , showed a 12.4% increase from the first quarter of 2023 – 1,356,532 passengers to 1,519,883 in this year’s first three months. March, when spring break travel mainly occurs, fared even better at a 14.05% increase from last year’s March – 603,547 passengers, up from 529,181.

“That’s certainly great news that there’s about (74,000) more passengers that chose the Milwaukee airport in March,” said Harold Mester, director of public affairs and marketing at the airport. “Some of that is due to the capacity additions that airlines added. When there’s more seats available for sale, there’s more tickets to be added.”

Mester attributed March’s bump to an enthusiastic spring break travel season, with a roughly 19% increase in international passengers . That was likely a record for the airport, with over 26,000 international spring break flights, he said.

The interest showed too, with airport officials at one point notifying travelers that parking lots were near capacity during the spring break travel season.

Flights to Cancun seemed to fare particularly well as Sun Country flew daily flights there at the peak of spring break, along with frequent flights from Apple Vacations and Funjet Vacations, he said.

“I think that was the first time we had modern daily flights to Cancun,” he said.

March also was the strongest month of the year so far , with 603,547 total enplanements and deplanements, compared to 476,547 in February and 439,354 in January.

The strong start to the year also reflected what Mester described as the airport reaching “the final stages from the rebound” of COVID-19. At that point, some flights were nixed as travel cut back.

He said markets like Milwaukee’s, which he described as a “middle-sized market,” have now started to see restoration of flights that were nixed during the pandemic. Initially, airlines focused on larger markets.

Now the airport has seen flights to destinations like Kansas City resume last summer, after 2023’s spring break, and begin to factor into the latest year’s travel statistics. Additionally, Mester said that some airlines like United are flying larger aircraft to some destinations and Delta has increased frequencies, however those could be seasonal changes.

In some cases, that could mean an aircraft that seats about 130 to now using an aircraft that can seat 180.

“Eventually we’re going to have to start comparing our stats year over year,” Mester said. “This was certainly a big March for us.”

While passengers continue to rise, cargo has not followed suit.

For the year, air freight is down 5.2% from last year’s first quarter and 7.48% in March. Mester said they are looking for “long term growth” in that category in the future.

In early March, he told the Journal Sentinel that the airport is in lease negotiations for the 440th Airlift Wing along the airport’s southern airfield to redevelop that into a cargo-specific area. That could help relieve pressure from Chicago O’Hare International Airport by enticing more air freight in Milwaukee, he said at that time.

15 Tips to Make Traveling With Family More Fun & Less Stressful

Sure, you will encounter moments where you start to question why you ever leave the house in the first place, but ideally you should enjoy the experience as much as your children. Smart and useful family travel tips can make all the difference between a grueling and exhaustive excursion and a wonderful, relaxing getaway.

For Expert Family Travel Advice: Go Straight to the Source

For medical advice, you seek out a doctor. For educational advice, you turn to teachers. For family travel advice, head straight for the moms. They are the experts who know what works and what doesn't when it comes to setting out on adventures with kids in tow. They have tried it all, discovered the best family travel hacks, and have zero qualms about sharing their experiences with other moms ready to embark on trips with kiddos.

Debbie Dubrow is one of those "traveling moms" who has spent much of her children's lives packing up suitcases, loading up kids, and setting out to see the world. The Seattle-based mother of three shares her personal travel stories and best family travel tips with other parents ready to hit the road on her blog, Delicious Baby .

Beginner Traveler? Start Small

If you are new to the idea of traveling with children, Dubrow suggests you start small. Take your family on a smaller, local day trip and test drive your tips and hacks while being close enough to home to pull the trigger and abort the mission if necessary. Don't become discouraged if your first few local expeditions are a flop. Reflect on what worked and what didn't, make adjustments and try it again! A few trips to nearby locales will help build your confidence so you can easily transition into bigger getaways soon enough. Dubrow offers, "Most parents are pleasantly surprised to find that their worst-case-scenarios don't come true, and that they even enjoy the experience."

Pay Extra Attention to Planning

Once upon a time, you packed a bag, bought a plane ticket on the fly, and ventured out to see the world. Now that you have kids, and kids have needs, and spontaneity is as distant a memory as sleep is, you'll want to spend extra time in the planning stages of the trip . The more work you put in on the front end, the less thinking you will have to do once vacation begins.

Work Within a Budget

Vacationing with kids can get pricey, so work within a previously agreed-upon budget when planning your next getaway. Letting expenses get away from you will instantly create stress, so staying in the anticipated price range will make it easier for you to relax and enjoy. Anticipate and plan for a few unexpected expenses too.

Spend Time Scoring the Right Accommodations

There are plenty of ways to cut corners and save a dollar during travel, but if you are vacationing with several children or young children, your lodging accommodations should not be one of them. Your days will be long and action-packed, so your home base needs to be a space of reprieve, your little temporary sanctuary.

Find a family-friendly hotel or rented home that fits most of your family's needs. If you are traveling somewhere hot, be sure there is air conditioning or working fans in your accommodation. If you will need to do laundry, check and see if those facilities are on property or nearby. Look into whether the room or rental is baby-proofed and whether it has a mini-fridge and microwave for all of those snacking needs.

It is a good idea to make a room "wish list" and then scour the net and read reviews to see which accommodation best suits you (and your budget!). There will undoubtedly be a few accommodation must-haves when traveling with children that you don't want to compromise on. Know what they are and make sure they are available to you before booking.

Adjust Your Travel Pace

Another tip Dubrow emphasizes to parents taking the travel plunge is to adjust the travel pace to best suit their children. Kids find joy in the most minor of details, so allow them to experience these travel days at their leisure. You might be used to packing in eight to ten hours of sights in a big city, but should you try to apply the vacationing pace of yesteryear to travel with kids, you are likely going to fizzle out fast. Dubrow elaborates, "Avoid trying to go at the same pace you did before you had children. Slow down and give your baby or toddler time to enjoy things at their level. They might be looking at the marble floors in the Vatican instead of the arches and artwork, and that is OK."

Decide beforehand what you really want to do with the kids. Think about if it will be of interest to them and if they will be able to make it through whatever it is you are hoping to do on vacation. Build in plenty of snack breaks or a mid-day siesta or rest period, so children don't become overly tired, cranky, and downright miserable. Pack your patience-pants, as this new, slower pace of seeing the world might be a bit of an adjustment for you.

Load Up on Water and Snacks

Throughout her journeys, Dubrow discovered the power of snacks. Snacks can pretty much fix anything at a moment's notice, and you don't want to be without them. Pack items that are easy to eat while on the go and make sure they aren't loaded with sugar. Choose grain or protein-based items to give kids energy without the dreaded sugar crash looming ahead. She also reminds parents that airplanes no longer provide the delectables of days past. Small snacks and beverages are typically offered, but if you have picky eaters or children with specific dietary needs, pack plenty of your own nibbles for a lengthy flight.

Get Travel Paperwork in Order

If you are flying or planning to leave your home country, be sure that all pertinent travel documents are ready and in order. Large families mean lots of passports, boarding passes and more. Sort and organize what you can. Place a small sticky note with family members' initials on the back of all passports and slip boarding passes into them. Place a rubber band around each travel packet, so when a name is called upon, you can quickly grab the documents you need in the moment.

For families needing to get passports , be sure that you do so well ahead of time to receive them before you leave for your trip. Obtaining passports can be tedious, and nothing will ruin a family vacation faster than one family member being left without proper travel documentation.

Make Emergency Plans

When it comes to vacation, you want to think about lounging around a pool or hiking through breathtaking forests... not about losing track of your kid! Not being able to locate your child is every parent's worst nightmare, and while it is something you don't even want to contemplate, it is best to have a plan in place for this type of emergency. Sit your kids down and discuss the plan for if someone becomes lost or strays from the group during travel. Older kids should have the means to contact parents, or at the very least know their parents' phone numbers. Write parents' names, kids' names, and contact numbers inside a shoe for little children. Be sure everyone understands how to get help in the event that they find themselves alone in a foreign space.

Be Prepared for Every Eventuality When Flying With Kids

Imagine being stuffed in a small airplane with a crying child who is bored to tears or covered head to toe in apple juice (or worse) and still having several hours of air travel to go. That's the stuff nightmares are made of, and a bit of thought and preparation in this department can make all the difference. Aside from packing drinks and snacks on a flight, be sure to pack several entertainment options for kids. Great ideas are:

• Coloring books and crayons
• Electronic devices
• Games galore - both word games and paper games
• Downloaded movies and shows
• Comfort toys

Aside from entertainment options, you will want to pack a change of clothes in your carry-on. The only thing worse than having a kid get sick or have an accident while flying the friendly skies is having nothing to change them into. Toss the following into your carry-on so you are never left high and dry (or rather high and soaking wet).

• Extra undies, pants, and shirt
• Lots of disinfectant wipes and a small towel
• Pajamas if you are traveling long distances through the night
• A plastic, sealable bag for soiled clothing
• Remember to pack a first aid kit and a car seat for plane and car travel

Be a Perfect Packer

Packing for a fun family trip comes with a bit of a learning curve unless you know how to do it properly right out of the gate! Parents tend to pack in one of two ways: overpacking and underpacking. They either take along everything they can think of and then curse themselves throughout the entire trip for spending more time acting as a family pack mule than enjoying a well-deserved vacation, or they bring next to nothing and spend more time scouring the earth for those forgotten necessities than they do relaxing.

You want to strike a packing balance. Try making a list of things you need several weeks before you depart. Next, revisit your list and remove items you think you can live without. Add a few new items that you skipped over the first time around. Consider what items your accommodations might have readily available. Many rental spaces have cribs, cots, and even high chairs for families to borrow, meaning you don't have to lug that stuff with you. If your accommodations have easily accessible laundry facilities, then pack half the clothes you originally planned on taking and spend a few hours mid-vacation doing laundry (maybe while the tots take an afternoon nap).

Know When to Schedule Flight Times

If you are flying with little ones, you might want to schedule your flight during nap time or during the evening hours. This is particularly important if you have a long journey ahead of you. A few hours of snooze time can make all the difference to a family stuck in the air for several hours. Furthermore, pay attention to your layover times. It is much harder to rush through a busy airport to catch a connecting flight with three kids, two strollers, and several carry-on bags in hand.

Be Flexible and Realistic

Planning is a beautiful thing, but so is flexibility. Again, balance is the key to travel happiness, especially when kids are involved. Yes, you want the major details hammered out before you take off for fun and adventure, but you also need to remember that things happen, plans unravel, and you need to be able to pivot, recover and carry on. Expect some bumps in the road, know when to make alterations in vacation plans to suit everyone's needs, and let go of any preconceived notions that every minute of the trip will be downright magical.

Don't Forego Routine

Sure, this is vacation, and routines will vary simply due to the nature of the beast, but travel doesn't have to mean nixing all routines and structure. Kids thrive on the routines you have created for them. They help keep them safe and healthy. While plenty of routine aspects will shift during travel, keep the ones you can in place. Try to eat and sleep near the times you would typically eat and sleep at home. If you do a daily rest or nap time, see if you can swing that same routine while vacationing. If you throw the kids completely out of whack, you will soon learn that a no-rules vacation is a no-fun vacation for parents.

Establish Spending Rules Pre-Vacation

Rules. Kids don't love them, but they are necessary on so many levels. Traveling with kids means taking the littles past countless souvenir and trinket stations and stores. Get ready for your children to beg you for every little, shiny piece of whatever catches their eye. They will cry and whine for everything they see; you will stress and maybe cry a little too as you attempt to stay calm while explaining that no, they cannot have another Beanie Boo.

Set rules for souvenirs ahead of time. Maybe they get one small thing at the airport and one thing at your vacation destination. Maybe you give each kid an allotted amount of spending money and how and where they spend it is up to them. Make rules that work for your children and your budget, and be sure everyone understands those rules ahead of vacation to minimize the stress that comes along with kids begging for everything.

Don't Put Off Travel Plans

Lastly, don't put off your travel plans because you are afraid of failure. Yes, everyone will be older and wiser in a few years, but life happens, circumstances constantly change, and you never know if this travel opportunity will circle back around. Take those vacations with the little kids or the angsty teens. Make the memories, spend the money, and know that the kids won't be kids forever. Remember, parts of your vacation may flop, but other parts will be amazing. In the end, you will likely be so glad you went for it and traveled with your kids.

Travel is all about the adventure of life and being together in a wonderful new time and space. Use tips to reduce stress, but know that the greatest advice you can receive is to be in the moment and try to enjoy your family vacation no matter what. Kids won't remember every detail of every vacation they took during their childhood, but they'll treasure the memories of how they felt spending time together as a family in a fun-filled environment.

AI, self-service are taking over travel. Will everything become a DIY experience?

Annette Johnson thinks the travel industry is taking self-service too far. She has watched airlines drop their phone support and add fees for airport check-ins that use a human agent. Some air carriers are even tearing out their kiosks and prodding passengers into using a phone app at the airport.

"It feels like you're being punished if you need a little help," said Johnson, a travel adviser based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. "I hate that."

The trend started earlier this year when Frontier transitioned to "fully digital" communications by eliminating its phone center. Last month, Alaska Airlines removed check-in kiosks at nine airports and told customers to use Alaska's app to download boarding passes or print them at home. It's part of Alaska's $2.5 billion plan for "a more seamless" travel experience.

• Booking. Artificial intelligence powered by technology like ChatGPT is slowly replacing human agents. Expedia's foray into AI is just one of what will be many announcements. AI is clearly the future of booking.
• Check-in. Airlines and hotels have introduced mobile check-in options that allow you to check in for flights or rooms using your smartphone. In some cases, this is replacing the self-service kiosks at the airport.
• Customer service. Many travel companies have added chatbots to their sites that can answer common customer questions and help with booking and other tasks. The technology uses AI and natural language processing to understand customer queries.

By the way, I asked ChatGPT to tell me what the travel industry was automating. It got two out of three right. (Hey, ChatGPT, scan this story.)

I'm not even including all of the automation that isn't customer-facing, like back office and revenue management systems that use AI. And I skipped the novelty items like robots serving meals – although at the rate things are going, those will soon be common.

Why travelers don't like self-service

Travelers don't hate the whole do-it-yourself movement – just parts of it. 

Johnson, the travel adviser from Colorado Springs, said she likes the convenience of self check-in and uses it herself. But her agency, which specializes in theme park vacations , works with passengers who aren't as comfortable with it, so she has to coach them through the self-service check-in process.

"Frontier has recently started asking if you will need assistance at the counter," Johnson said. "If so, then you pay an extra $20 per person (in) each direction." 

When her daughter tried to check in online for a recent Frontier flight from Denver, the system blocked her and directed her to talk to the agent.

"She was afraid this would mean she would have to pay an extra $20," Johnson said. 

Fortunately, the agent checked her in without asking for more money. But Johnson wonders who is really benefiting from the automation – passengers or the airline?

Frontier says it's passengers.

"Automating our processes for check-in, bag tagging and generating a boarding pass are designed to help customers breeze through their travel experience and avoid waiting in line," Frontier Airlines spokesperson Jennifer de la Cruz said. "Automation also helps us keep our costs down, which ultimately benefits consumers in the form of lower fares."

What's good about self-service in travel?

The travel industry likes to frame automation as a "win-win." Customers benefit by getting faster service and maybe even lower prices, and companies save on staffing.

Sometimes it is. Adam Harris, CEO of the hospitality management software company Cloudbeds , said he just spoke with a customer who loves automation. Installing a virtual check-in at her hotel group has saved her about 16 hours a week in staff time.

"In checking in guests, there's a lot of standing around and waiting for your guest to arrive, and delays happen all the time," he said. "After switching to virtual check-ins, she turned the former receptionist position into a guest experience manager, whose job now is to curate local experiences for the guests."

The results? Guests loved the new experience manager, leading to an increase in positive ratings. But win-wins are rare.

What the critics think of travel industry automation

As you can probably imagine, the travel industry also has mixed feelings about self-service. Airlines and hotels love the potential money savings. But travel advisers are not thrilled.

Mitch Krayton, a travel adviser and owner of Krayton Travel in Denver, says the trend benefits only the companies. The businesses have no intention of passing the savings along to their customers. Bottom line: There's no substitute for a professional ticket agent or hotel receptionist.

"Self-service only gives you false expectations that you will be as successful as a professional," he said. "It doesn’t – and you won't."

Automation may support basic travel bookings, but observers say it has yet to prove itself when it comes to fixing some of the problems that are likely to emerge this summer. Those include rebooking complex itineraries o r taking care of a passenger with special needs .

"Self-service bookings and check-in facilities can be problematic enough," said Bill McGee, a senior fellow for aviation and travel at the American Economic Liberties Project . "But self-service troubleshooting never works."

Is self-service here to stay in travel?

Still, self-service is a thing in travel, and the trend is only accelerating. That means it's just a matter of time before you find yourself at an airport without even a check-in kiosk, fumbling for your phone. Or at a hotel with no check-in desk. Or talking to ChatGPT when you contact a company.

"To introduce automation effectively, you must lead with a human-centered approach," said Mario Matulich, president of Customer Management Practice . 

Customer service experts tell me there's a silver lining. In a self-service, AI-enabled travel industry, it'll be easier to find quality airlines, car rental companies and hotels.

"The human element is crucial, and personal service can be a major differentiator," said Mike Taylor, managing director for travel, hospitality and retail at JD Power . The best companies will refuse to outsource important customer service functions to an AI or force their customers to use a self-service app. And over time, that will become increasingly clear.

Maybe that's a good thing. I see a future where travel companies that don't care about customer service go completely self-service. ChatGPT answers the phones. You're basically on your own. Figuring out which companies are worth booking shouldn't be that difficult.

Elliott's tips for dealing with self-service travel

• Learn the shortcuts to a human. If you're stuck talking to an AI, there's almost always a way out. Words like "operator" or "agent" will usually get you to a human. And if not, you can always hang up the phone or discontinue the chat and try again. Many companies have apps with a "chat with us" function that can connect you to a human being.
• Make arrangements before you leave. If you don't have a cellphone or can't use technology, you can usually call an airline's special services desk to find out how to check in manually with a human agent. At a hotel, politely ask for help if you can't check in with your phone. 
• Avoid extreme DIY. It will soon be obvious which airlines are aspiring to be the Ikea of the skies, where you have to check yourself in and tag your own bags. If you'd rather avoid that experience, now is the time to steer clear of the worst offenders.

America's Best Small Beach Town Is an Old Florida Gem With Crystal-clear Waters and a Scenic Bike Path

While the state of Florida welcomes almost 140 million visitors each year, only a small portion of them make their way to serene Gasparilla Island and its main hub, Boca Grande. This upscale yet down-to-earth community on the Gulf of Mexico is just the right amount of under-the-radar, except when it comes to its role as “tarpon capital of the world."

In the words of Nikki Heimann, manager of The Pink Pony — an island-favorite ice cream shop opened in 1988 by her grandfather — the stoplight- and franchise-free community is “like stepping back in time.”

“Our beaches are stunningly clean and our water is usually clear and sparkling, with a bountiful variety of sea life,” she says. “A big allure is game fishing in our deep-water pass for tarpon. We have two well-maintained historical lighthouses with a museum and state park on the south end, and a smooth bike path that runs the whole length of the island, so many people enjoy renting a golf cart or bicycle to spend the day cruising around. It’s a great place to visit if you’re looking for peace, tranquility, and quiet time.”

Beyond its looks, Boca Grande is resilient — along with much of Southwest Florida, especially Sanibel and Captiva islands to the south, it was devastated by Hurricane Ian in September 2022. The Pink Pony reopened soon after the storm, but other establishments were not so fortunate. “Many iconic features of our landscape are gone forever," Heimann says. "Everyone around here has their story and struggle that they’re going through. We are just thankful we didn’t get washed out.”

Back in action, Boca Grande remains a captivating place to visit — a tranquil respite from the frenetic pace of our modern world (and many parts of Florida) with a beachy, small-town allure. The Best Times to Visit 

Like many beach towns in Florida , Boca Grande is a seasonal destination. “Most people enjoy coming to the island during our busy ‘social season’ when the town is bustling with activity and the Florida sunshine is a delightful reprieve from the winter snow up north,” Heimann says. This period lasts from approximately Thanksgiving to spring break.

“Then, we roll into tarpon season, when the fishing families come to town and enjoy the island through summertime,” she continues. “Many downtown businesses close during August and September, so that’d be the time to come if you like to sweat in solitude.”

While mid- to late summer is a crowd-free, quieter time in Boca Grande, you may have trouble securing a stay, as the Gasparilla Inn closes annually from mid-July to early October. However, other hotels stay open, and there are assorted vacation rentals available. When planning your visit, remember that the best time to visit Florida , in general, is spring and winter as hurricane season lasts from June 1 through Nov. 30 each year, so there’s always a chance of storms during the summer and fall.

As one might expect of America’s best small beach town, the best things to do in Boca Grande are in, around, or on the water — namely, fishing, shelling, boating, beaches, and biking. Heimann says the No. 1 thing she recommends is not so much an activity but an experience: enjoying a sunset either on the beach or a paddleboard. Other things to do include climbing the Gasparilla Island Lighthouse (known locally as the “range light”) and heading to Gasparilla Island State Park for swimming, snorkeling, or fishing. Keep an eye out for the tarpon that often jump and roll in the deep waters of Boca Grande Pass. Or, for more tarpon time, go during the annual World’s Richest Tarpon Tournament , a tradition dating back to the early 1980s. Thousands of dollars in prize money is on the (literal) line.

You can see much of what Gasparilla Island has to offer on the Boca Grande Bike Path . The island is only seven miles long and a half-mile across at its widest point, and this 6.5-mile path runs past highlights like Banyan Street, the Boca Grande Historical Society , and the pretty-in-pink Johann Fust Community Library . The north end is close to Glass Bottom Rentals , where Heimann recommends renting a clear kayak to paddle around the old railroad trestles nearby.

Try to score an invite to the members-only Useppa Island ; otherwise, a day trip to Cayo Costa should scratch the island-adventure itch. It’s accessible only via boat or kayak, with a ferry service available from several mainland locations.

Gasparilla Inn & Club 

The Gasparilla Inn & Club represents old Florida at its finest, striking the perfect balance between ritzy and relaxed. The inn has a variety of accommodation options, from rooms and suites in The Main Inn to private cottages and two- to four-bedroom villas. Guests can take part in a range of activities, from golf to croquet, fitness classes, and spa treatments. The inn has four eateries — just be sure to pack with the dress code in mind.

Boca Grande Hotel

The quaint Boca Grande Hotel offers more laid-back accommodations on the north end of Gasparilla Island, near Uncle Henry’s Marina , but the closest public beach access is three miles away. The property has an outdoor pool, loungers that you can rent out and bring with you to the beach, and a guest laundromat for cleaning up before you repack your suitcase. Next door, you can grab a deli sandwich or ice cream from Kappy’s Market .

The Palmetto Inn

A sister to the Boca Grande Hotel, The Palmetto Inn is located in the Downtown Boca Grande Historic District and just a short walk from the beach. Built as a private residence in 1900, it’s now a charming inn with seven suites and some of the lowest in-season rates on the island.

The Innlet on the Waterfront

Located on the waters of the Boca Grande Bayou, The Innlet on the Waterfront is an unfussy charmer with about 30 waterfront and courtyard-facing rooms. Amenities include a pool, on-site restaurant serving breakfast and lunch, plus a full-service marina if you BYOB (Florida-speak for "bring your own boat"). Be on the lookout for manatees as you enjoy your breakfast on the patio of The Outlet.

Gasparilla Inn

Guests of the Gasparilla Inn will be delighted to find that its restaurants are some of Boca Grande’s best. It has an elegant main dining room (open for breakfast and dinner), the casual Pink Elephant (open for lunch and dinner), and the atmospheric BZ’s, where the public and guests alike can enjoy beverages and snacks while taking in views of The Gasparilla Golf Club and Charlotte Harbor. The Beach Club is another favorite for poolside beverages and lunch but is reserved for inn guests and members only.

The Temptation Restaurant 

To experience Boca Grande like a local, order the fish of the day at The Temptation Restaurant . Signature dishes include crab cakes served with roasted shrimp sauce and pan-fried lemony-garlic snapper, while the daily special might be blackened tripletail or chargrilled pompano. The wine list is equally impressive.

Scarpa’s Coastal

Sister to the beloved, family-owned Scarpa’s Italian in Lakeland, Scarpa’s Coastal serves fresh Florida seafood with an Italian flair. It also offers an extensive wine menu with bottles imported from Napa Valley and Italy. Patrons rave about the crab cakes, pasta, and chicken dishes.

Eagle Grille and Miller’s Dockside at Boca Grande Marina

The Boca Grande Marina is home to two restaurants, Eagle Grille and Miller’s Dockside . At Eagle Grille, you’ll find a quieter setting with second-floor waterfront views, while Miller’s Dockside has a sports bar atmosphere right on the water. They have the same menu, full of fresh coastal cuisine like oysters, Gulf grouper, and shrimp.

Sisters Restaurant

It’s not vacation unless you go out for pizza at least once, and Sisters Restaurant is the place to do it. This homey spot offers classic Italian comfort foods to eat indoors or out — and, yes, it really is owned by twin sisters.

The Pink Pony

What’s a beach day without a stop for ice cream? The best place to grab a sweet treat is The Pink Pony, the kind of hometown ice cream shop that once rented out movies on VHS and developed photo film. Things are different now, but visitors can continue at least one generations-old Boca Grande tradition and stop in for hand-dipped Amish ice cream, sorbets, specialty sundaes, shaved ice, all-fruit smoothies, açaí bowls, and coffee drinks. The Pink Pony also has snacks, beer, wine, bagged ice, and souvenirs. And don’t miss Tortuga , the outdoor walk-up window serving authentic Mexican food behind the storefront.

Boca Grande has local, family-owned shops selling souvenirs, art, clothes, and more. Heimann recommends Fugate’s — “a classic island gift store that has a little bit of everything,” she says. Or stop by Barbara Anne’s for a special piece of jewelry to commemorate your trip. 

At the family-owned Smart Studio Art Gallery & Shop (which has another location in Maine), you’ll find stunning local art, including original paintings, prints, driftwood sculptures, gifts, and home decor. Or, if you’re in the market for light tackle or outdoorsy clothing and accessories, stop by Boca Grande Outfitters .

Aside from the private Coral Creek Airport, which is less than 10 miles from Boca Grande, there are several public airports nearby. The closest is Punta Gorda Airport (PGD), about an hour away, which is serviced by Sun Country and Allegiant Air with nonstop flights from about 50 cities.

There’s also Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) and Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), both of which are about an hour and a half away, and Tampa International Airport (TPA), which is about two hours away by car. Boca Grande is over three hours from both Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Miami International Airport (MIA). No matter where you fly into, there’s just one road onto Gasparilla Island: the Boca Grande Causeway.
