Cape Coast Castle

Top choice in Cape Coast

Cape Coast’s imposing, whitewashed castle commands the heart of town, overlooking the sea. Once one of the world's most important slave-holding sites, it provides horrifying insight into the workings of the trade. Staff conduct hour-long tours, during which you’ll visit the dark, damp dungeons, where slaves waited for two to 12 weeks, while contemplating rumours that only hinted at their fate. A visit to the dungeons contrasts sharply with the governor’s bedroom, blessed with floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramic ocean views.

There’s also an excellent museum on the first floor, detailing the history of Ghana, the slave trade and Akan culture.

First converted into a castle by the Dutch in 1637 and expanded by the Swedes in 1652, the castle changed hands five times over the 13 tumultuous years that followed until, in 1664, it was captured by the British. During the two centuries of British occupation, it was the headquarters for the colonial administration until Accra was declared the new capital in 1877.

Things to do in Cape Coast Ghana + Photography

Cape Coast is known for its huge Slave Castles but what else is there to do when you visit?  I explore the things to do in Cape Coast and why you may wish to stay for a few days.

Cape Coast Castle

Nearly every tourist who visits Cape Coast, visits only for for Cape Coast Castle.  What happened in this former slave castle was terrible and you must visit to truly understand what really happened in West Africa during the slave trade.  Read in depth about and see more photography from my visit to Cape Coast Castle .

Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle is another Slave Castle just a few miles down the road from Cape Coast Castle.  After visiting both castles, I felt this Elmina Castle to be more brutal than Cape Coast Castle. Read in depth about and see my photography from inside Elmina Castle .

Fort Nassau

Not much remains of Fort Nassau, however it’s worth visiting to learn about the history of this area.  Not only were Africans being kidnapped by Europeans from the Gold Coast but the Europeans were also fighting amongst each other for control of this profitable trade.  The name would suggest this is a Portuguese Fort which it originally was but it was the Dutch who controlled it for the most part.

Kakum National Park

Kakum National Park is one of the most Instagram worthy locations in West Africa.  Or series of Instagram worthy locations should I say as you follow the series of canopy walkways.  Additionally, the jungle views from the canopy’s are also stunning.  Finally, if you visit for birdwatching you may spot, Fraser’s Eagle Owl, Grey Parrot or the Senegal Parrot.  Kalum National Park is quite a journey from Cape Coast therefore it’s best to negotiate with a taxi driver the day before.

Birdwatching

As you stand on a castle fort overlooking the Atlantic Ocean I have no doubt that the movement of fisherman and boats will catch your eye.  In addition to this will be several birds overhead which are actively hunting the fish.  After viewing the sea birds, head inland to Kakum National Park where you can view more exotic birds.

One bird which caught my eye in central Cape Coast was the Pied Crow.  This is the sub Saharan African version of the crows you see in throughout Europe.  With it’s white coat, it will certainly catch your eye!

Watch Fisherman

As well as tourism, fishing is the other top source of income for the people of Cape Coast Ghana.  If you wish, you could take a walk along the beach where the fisherman are, I’m sure they are friendly and welcoming.  Alternatively, watch them from Cape Coast Castle.

Cape Coast is of course a coastal city and therefore home to several beaches.  Many of the beaches are empty therefore you could have it all to yourself.  I must confess however, they are not the most beautiful looking beaches.

Fetu Afahye Festival

Visit Cape Coast on the first Saturday of September to experience the Fetu Afahye Festival.  Agreed, it’s not one of the top 5 best international carnivals but it’s certainly one of the most unique you’ll ever witness.  On the Saturday local chiefs pray to the gods for help in getting rid of disease.  I’m sure the festival of 2020 has more significance than usual!  What’s more, a day earlier is Orange Friday when everyone in town dresses in orange clothing or even paint themselves orange.

As you walk the streets of Cape Coast Ghana there’s no doubt you’ll see street art.  Some street art is political but the majority is extremely creative!  My favorite city in West Africa for street art is Bissau, Guinea Bissau .  Lastly, it’s highly likely random people will approach you when photographing street art and demanding money or water.  As these people had nothing to do with creating the artwork, I’d simply buy them a sachet of water.  However, not one person was thankful or they’d complain they want more water.

British Colonial Buildings

Once called the Gold Coast, Ghana was a British colony.  For this reason, you’ll see lots of British colonial buildings.

Queen Victoria Bust

I was amazed to see a Queen Victoria bust still standing in central Cape Coast Ghana.  Queen Victoria was of course the reigning monarch of Great Britain during the colonial period.  There’s also a Queen Victoria statue in the former British colony of Guyana .

Methodist Church

Religion was brought here by the Europeans during the slave trade era.  As a result, you’ll see prominent churches throughout the city.  Adjacent to the Methodist church is a Barclays Bank which still remains here from the British colonial era.

Saint Francis de Sales Cathedral

Saint Francis de Sales Cathedral is on a high point and visible from all over Cape Coast.  What’s more, from outside the church are wonderful 360 degree panoramic views of Cape Coast Ghana.

Explore the Streets of Cape Coast

As you walk the streets of Cape Coast you’ll experience a lot of activity.  Whether it’s a bajaji transporting people around the city or women dressed in colorful outfits shopping in the markets, there’s always something happening!  Lastly, you’ll meet lots of locals when you take a share taxi or share bajaji across the city!

Some areas of Cape Coast are extremely beautiful.  But there are also a high number of shanty town areas.  During the day, all these are safe so feel free to wander and explore Cape Coast Ghana.  However, don’t be surprised when kids approach you asking for water, simply buy them a water sachet and they’ll run off with it.

Where to Eat in Cape Coast

Of course, being a fishing village seafood is what to eat in Cape Coast.  For some reason, I went for the chicken and chips meal!  You’ll find restaurants scattered throughout the center of town.

How to Travel from Cape Coast to Accra

By West African standards, it’s extremely easy to travel from Cape Coast to Accra by public transport.  Simply go to this point and take the next available share taxi.  Once full, they’ll head directly to Accra.  Accra is a popular destination therefore they leave regularly with short waiting times.

Cape Coast is a city, fishing port, and the capital of Cape Coast Metropolitan District and Central Region of south Ghana.

The language of the people of Cape Coast is Fante.

Cape Coast houses most of Ghana’s tourist attractions. The crab is the city’s mascot and a statue of one stands in the city centre. Fort William, built in 1820, was an active lighthouse from 1835 to the 1970s, while Fort Victoria was built in 1702.

Other attractions include a series of Asafo shrines, Cape Coast Centre for National Culture, the Oguaa Fetu Afahye festival (held on the first Saturday of September), and since 1992, the biennial Panafest theatre festival. The city is located 30 km south of Kakum National Park, one of the most diverse and best preserved national parks in West Africa.

It is believed that Michelle Obama, US First Lady, considers Cape Coast as her ancestral home.

The Fante people of Ghana are notable for their way of cooking. They are known for eating rich cuisine, mostly with more fish, meat, or any form of protein than necessary. It is believed that this is because of the number of rivers and lakes situated in the town. The people are known for their expert fishing and fish preservation abilities. Some of the cuisines are fante fante, etew and pepper sauce or okro stew, fante kenkey, which can be eaten with soups, stews or shito.

Castle Beach Restaurant

For location and ambience, it’s hard to top the Castle Beach Restaurant adjacent to the castle. It’s an atmospheric spot with dark-wood platforms and wide green bamboo screens, with several areas giving diners good sea views. There’s a lengthy menu of coconut curries, stir-fries and seafood dishes. Main courses GH¢12-25.

Baobab Vegetarian Restaurant

This little place is the base for the fundraising arm of the Baobab Children Foundation. There is an excellent little shop stocking all manner of eco-friendly, fair trade and recycled goods, including cosmetics, art works and fine kente cloth. It has an adjoining vegetarian snack bar with dishes of tofu, salads and fruits, many from its organic farm. The organization also has five rooms in Cape Coast. www.baobab-children-foundation.de

Where to stay

Hans Cottage Botel

This rather singular property lies around 10 minutes along the road to Kakum National Park. It’s notable principally for the crocodiles that patrol its lake (and occasionally its bar-restaurant), but there’s plenty of passable accommodation on offer, and its location makes it a haven for birdlife. There’s a wide mixture of chalets, double and family rooms available to ‘experience the joy and comfort of a sleep’. There’s also a gift shop, conference facilities, restaurant and bar (main courses GH¢6-18). Double from GH¢35; chalets GH¢75-200. www.hansbotel.com

Mighty Victory Hotel

The Mighty Victory Hotel is a decent option for those in search of mid-range accommodation – a double with fan goes for US$25, while those with air conditioning are US$40 a night. All rooms have a TV and shower. There is room service and a restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s also a bar, gardens, conference suite, wheelchair access and internet access. Doubles US$25-40. www.mightyvictoryhotel.com

Sanaa Lodge

This is probably the most upmarket hotel in Cape Coast since the closure of Eshu. Billed as three-star, this is a comfortable option with 29 air-conditioned rooms and cable TV. Four of the rooms are suites. There’s also a swimming pool, restaurant, bar and grill, shops, internet café, business centre, fitness centre, secure parking and conference facilities.
