Things to Know Before You Cruise

Choosing Your Carnival Mardi Gras Suite: Which Is Right For You?

Ahoy there, fellow travelers! If you’re like me, you’ve been dreaming of escaping the mundane routine and setting sail on a Carnival Mardi Gras cruise. The thought of endless buffets, exotic ports of call, and non-stop entertainment is enough to make me want to pack my bags and never look back.

But with so many different types of suites to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is right for you. Fear not, my friends, for I have done the research and am here to help.

In this article, we’ll break down the different types of suites and their perks, as well as provide some tips on which suites are the best alternatives to the most expensive options. So, sit back, relax, and let’s find the perfect suite to make all your cruise dreams come true.

After all, isn’t the pursuit of freedom what travel is all about?

  • Carnival Mardi Gras offers 9 different types of suites with varying sizes, perks, and prices.
  • Excel Presidential Suite is the largest and most luxurious suite, while Excel Aft Suite and Excel Corner Suite are good alternatives to it.
  • Havana Cabana Corner Suite is not ideal for families, but Havana Cabana Suite can accommodate three guests.
  • Ocean Suites are the most popular and affordable suite type, and Family Harbor Ocean View Suites are ideal for families who want space to relax without a balcony.

Types of Suites

I learned that there are nine different types of suites on the Carnival Mardi Gras, and choosing the perfect one can be quite overwhelming. Suite comparisons can help make the decision process easier.

The most luxurious suite is the Excel Presidential Suite, which features spacious living areas, a large balcony, and exclusive access to the Havana Pool and Spas Thermal Suite. However, the price can be steep, with costs ranging from $3,675 per person for a seven-night Caribbean cruise to $10,000 or more on popular itineraries.

For those on a budget, the Excel Corner Suite is a good alternative, offering a more affordable price point with a large wraparound balcony.

Families may prefer the Family Harbor Ocean View Suites, which can sleep up to five people and come with two bathrooms and a privacy curtain between the bedroom and sitting area.

It’s important to consider the perks that come with each suite type, as they can vary widely and may make a big difference in your cruise experience.

Details and Costs

The Presidential Suite on the Carnival Mardi Gras can cost upwards of $10,000 per person on popular itineraries, making it one of the most luxurious and expensive suite options available. However, there are several other suite options that offer similar amenities and perks at a more affordable price.

Here are some things to consider when comparing suite prices on the Carnival Mardi Gras:

The Excel Aft Suite and the Excel Corner Suite are both great alternatives to the Presidential Suite, offering similar views and amenities at a lower cost.

The Ocean Suites are the most popular and affordable suite type on the Mardi Gras, offering lots of privacy and storage space, as well as access to all of Carnival’s suite perks.

The best time to book a Carnival Mardi Gras suite is during the off-season, when prices are typically lower. It’s also a good idea to book early, as suite availability can be limited.

Excel Suites

For those looking for a more affordable suite option on the Carnival Mardi Gras, consider the Excel Suites which offer twice the space of an extended balcony stateroom and include Excel Suite perks. These suites are a great option for those who want to experience a little luxury without breaking the bank. Compared to other cruise lines, Carnival’s Excel Suites offer more space and amenities for the price.

Take a look at the table below to see how Carnival’s Excel Suites compare to similar suites on other cruise lines:

As you can see, Carnival’s Excel Suites offer a larger size at a more affordable price compared to similar suites on other cruise lines. Plus, with the added Excel Suite perks, such as priority boarding and a dedicated concierge, you’ll feel like a VIP without the hefty price tag.

Havana Cabana Suites

When it comes to experiencing the ultimate in exclusivity and luxury, nothing compares to the Havana Cabana Suites on Carnival Mardi Gras. These suites offer a large cabana area along with access to the exclusive Havana Pool and Bar, making them an ideal choice for those who want to soak up the sun and enjoy a refreshing drink in a private setting.

However, families with young children may want to steer clear of the Havana Cabana Corner Suite, as it only sleeps two people and children under 12 years old are not allowed.

Compared to other suite types, the Havana Cabana Suites are a great option for those traveling with three guests. One of the suites has a sofa bed with a privacy divider between it and the bedroom area, making it a comfortable and cozy option for a small group.

While the Havana Cabana Corner Suite may not be the best choice for families, the Havana Cabana Suites are a great option for those who want to experience the luxury of a suite without breaking the bank.

Cloud 9 Spa Suites

I’m excited to explore the Cloud 9 Spa Suites on Carnival Mardi Gras, which offer exclusive perks and a prime location near the spa area. These suites are perfect for those who want to indulge in spa amenities and enjoy a relaxing vacation. Located close to the spa area, the Cloud 9 Spa Suites offer easy access to the thermal suites, thalassotherapy pool, and fitness center.

One of the most significant advantages of the Cloud 9 Spa Suites is the exclusive access to the thermal suites. These suites come with upgraded ELEMIS in-suite toiletries and offer a prime location on the ship. As compared to other suite types, the Cloud 9 Spa Suites are more affordable and offer similar perks. To help you understand the differences between the various suite types, here is a comparison table between the Cloud 9 Spa Suites and other suite types available on Carnival Mardi Gras.

As you can see, the Cloud 9 Spa Suites offer unique spa amenities that are not available in other suite types. These suites are perfect for those who want to indulge in spa treatments and enjoy a relaxing vacation. However, if you’re looking for a more luxurious experience, the Excel Presidential Suite might be a better option, albeit more expensive.

Ocean Suites

Moving on from the luxurious Cloud 9 Spa Suites, let’s talk about the popular and affordable Ocean Suites. These suites are perfect for those who want to enjoy suite perks without breaking the bank.

As someone who loves to have privacy and space during my cruises, I find that the Ocean Suites provide just that. One of the best things about the Ocean Suites is the variety of balcony options available. Some suites have larger balconies than others, so if having a spacious balcony is important to you, make sure to choose a suite on a higher deck.

Additionally, the Ocean Suites come with privacy curtains, allowing you to enjoy the view without worrying about prying eyes. And with two TVs and plenty of storage space, you’ll have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable cruise.

Family Harbor Ocean View Suites

As a family traveler, I’m always on the lookout for suites that can accommodate my loved ones, and the Family Harbor Ocean View Suites on Carnival Mardi Gras seem like the ideal choice. These suites are spacious and can accommodate up to five guests with a privacy curtain between the bedroom and sitting area.

What’s more, there are two bathrooms in each suite, one with a shower, toilet, and sink, and another with a small bathtub and sink. The suite amenities are perfect for families with young kids. The suite size for Family Harbor Ocean View Suites is 312 square feet, with a large picture window and a window seat to enjoy the view.

These suites do not have a balcony, but the privacy curtain between the bedroom and sitting area provides enough space for everyone to relax. The suite numbers for Family Harbor Ocean View Suites are 4330, 4332, 4370, 4376, 4388, and 4394.

Carnival Cruise Lines

Let me tell you about Carnival Cruise Lines and the perks that come with their suites.

Carnival Cruise Lines offers a whole host of extra benefits and amenities to those who book one of their suites. The perks differ depending on which suite is chosen, but some of the most common ones include priority boarding, complimentary drinks, and access to exclusive areas such as private lounges and pools.

As Cruise Tips’s Recommendations suggest, the Ocean Suites are the best way to get Carnival’s suite perks without the hefty price tag of some of the larger suites. These suites offer privacy curtains, lots of storage space, and two TVs, making them a great choice for those who want a little extra space and luxury without breaking the bank.

So, whether you’re looking for a high-end Presidential Suite or a more affordable Ocean Suite, Carnival Cruise Lines has something to suit every budget and taste.

What are the dining options available on Carnival Mardi Gras?

Let me tell you about the dining options on Carnival Mardi Gras. They have specialty restaurants like Bonsai Teppanyaki and Cucina del Capitano, and meal plans like the Chef’s Table and Bottomless Bubbles. Delicious food and endless options await!

Are there any activities for children on board the ship?

Yes, there are plenty of activities for kids on board the Carnival Mardi Gras, including WaterWorks water park, mini golf, an arcade, and youth programs. The ship also has child-friendly amenities like Family Harbor Ocean View Suites.

What is the dress code for the various restaurants and bars on the ship?

Formal nights and casual attire are the dress codes for Carnival Mardi Gras restaurants and bars. Pack accordingly and bring comfortable clothing for daytime activities. Don’t worry about being too formal, the atmosphere is laid-back and free-spirited.

Is there a limit to the number of alcoholic drinks that can be consumed on board?

Drinking responsibly is important on board. Safety regulations limit the number of alcoholic drinks one can consume. It’s like walking a tightrope; too much and you risk falling. But with self-control, you can enjoy your cruise without endangering yourself or others.

Are there any restrictions on bringing personal items such as hair dryers or irons on board the ship?

Personal item restrictions are in place on Carnival cruises, including restrictions on hair dryers and irons. Packing tips include checking the cruise line’s website for a list of prohibited items and packing a power strip for more outlets.

Carnival Mardi Gras: Is Aft Excel Suite Worth The Price?

Picture of Richard Simms

Richard Simms

  • January 10, 2022

When Carnival Cruise Line introduced Mardi Gras , it rolled out several new stateroom categories, including the Excel Suites.

carnival cruise line mardi gras

Among the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous of them are the aft corner suites with wraparound balconies. They ain’t cheap… but the real question is whether they’re worth the high price tag.

Having just spent a week in one, we’re here to tell you what we loved and didn’t and whether we’d book one again.

It’s All About the Balcony

Let’s get this out of the way right up front: While the suite itself is nice enough — more on that in a moment — what you’re really paying top dollar for here is the balcony.

“Huge” doesn’t begin to describe the space, which wraps around the side of the ship and features a hot tub, numerous seating areas, a circular daybed, and a table that seats four.

circular daybed on the balcony

There are no words to describe the “wow factor” that this balcony offers. So big is the outdoor space that it has two separate access points — one in the suite’s living room and a second in the bedroom.

There is a borderline ridiculous amount of seating, with several small couches placed on the portion of the balcony, which wraps around the side of the ship.

view off the back of the ship

Just past this sitting area is a hot tub. I’ll admit that this offshoot from the main balcony didn’t get much use during my stay in the suite. I’m not really a hot tub guy, and having one on the balcony just felt kind of odd to me.

However, many others I’ve spoken to absolutely loved slipping into the warm water and having a glass of champagne while they watched the world float by.

Mardi Gras Hot Tub Balcony

It’s easy to see how relaxing the hot tub would be, especially at night.

The balcony was truly incredible and, as I said, the thing that might well justify the exorbitant cost of the aft-facing Excel suite. But what about the inside space? How does it measure up?

Inside the Aft-Facing Excel Suite

It’s probably a good thing that you see the interior of the suite before you walk out onto the balcon y because, obviously, that outdoor space would be a hard act to follow. The interior space is quite lovely and very well-appointed, but not necessarily what you’d call something to write home about.

Upon entering, you’re greeted with a short hallway into the living room area, which features an L-shaped couch (which can be converted into a bed), a seating area, a flat-screen TV (one of two in the suite), and one of the doors to the balcony.

stateroom with sofa and table

There are a few things to note , the first of which is storage space. If you’re someone who tends to overpack, never fear because this room will swallow all of your belongings. There are drawers, closets, and shelves everywhere… and we’re only talking about the living room.

Also — and this is going to sound kinda weird, I’m sure — but the living room lamp is perfectly located.

Whenever I left the suite for dinner, I’d leave that lamp on and found that the glow it gave was warm and welcoming in a way I really can’t describe and didn’t expect. (It’s worth noting that the base of the lamp also has UBS ports built in, which is a nice feature.)

Mardi Gras Suite

Another kind of cool feature? On one of the shelves, you’ll find a pair of binoculars. I can’t say I got a ton of use out of them, but there were at least a few times when I broke them out in order to look at ships in the distance or study the landscape as we pulled into one of our ports of call.

Party of One

I can’t attest to how comfortable the living room couch is when used as a bed (or even what it looks like unfolded). Although I’d planned to share the suite with a friend who was going to use the living room while I took the master bedroom, they wound up canceling at the last moment.

“It’s… just you?” asked my room steward, clearly taken aback. And I’ll admit that I had a nanosecond of guilt before reminding myself that I’d booked the suite as a “back to cruising” gift to myself after two long years away from my happy place.

carnival excel suite master bedroom aft facing mardi gras

The color scheme of the bedroom is calm and soothing, with whites and blues and greys.

As is becoming more and more common on ships in general and Carnival ships in particular, the nightstand featured reading lights as well as standard outlets and USB ports, perfect for charging your phone or Kindle while keeping them close at hand.

Let’s talk about lighting for a second, shall we? I don’t know exactly when this happened, but somewhere along the line,

carnival mardi gras aft facing excel suite bedroom work space

Not only is the lighting on this workspace perfect but take a look at all those outlets along the bottom of the mirror.

This was a fantastic place to work (although, more often than not, I grabbed my computer and went out onto the balcony to sprawl on the daybed and pretend that I was going to do some serious writing when, in fact, I knew I’d be napping within minutes).

Storage-wise, the bedroom, like the living room, has plenty of shelves and drawers, although the real showstopper here is the massive walk-in closet.

carnival excel aft facing suite mardi gras storage

Shower Heaven

The bathroom is massive by cruise ship standards. One thing that’s particularly nice is that the bathroom facilities can be accessed from both the living room and the bedroom. This means that if you have people using the living room as their sleeping space, they don’t have to enter the bedroom in order to use the bathroom — a major plus.

A real high point of the suite was, oddly enough, the shower.

A large, glass-enclosed space, it features a rainfall showerhead as well as four adjustable jets and a “wand.”Although I’d never before experienced a shower like this, I’ve heard it described as a “carwash” shower, and that’s a pretty apt description.

I suspect the water sprays clean crevices of my body that I didn’t even know existed.

Let’s Talk Perks (Or Lack Thereof)

If there’s one way in which this massive suite fell short, it would be the perks and amenities. My room steward was pleasant enough, but his attention to detail was severely lacking.

carnival mardi gras excel aft facing suite shower

Twice, wet towels were left on the floor as opposed to being replaced. My one request — that the ice bucket be filled each day — was largely ignored, as was the trash can in the bathroom which was not emptied once during the week.

None of these are huge complaints, but they all reflect a level of service below what one expects when paying for one of the most expensive staterooms on a ship.

Mardi Gras Maiden Voyage Loft 19

Another perk granted to Excel Suite guests is complimentary access to Loft 19, a private top-deck space that offers comfy loungers, an infinity whirlpool, and cabanas that can be rented at an additional cost. The space is large and well-appointed, but the Serenity Retreat adults-only area — one deck below — offers far better amenities. Loft 19 does not have a bar or a pool, and while there are supposedly attendants (as you’d find by the main pool) who will get drinks, I never had one swing by my lounger a single time. When I wanted drinks, I went down to Serenity (which also offers a sea day salad bar). Again, one would think that the area set aside specifically for guests paying top dollar would offer at least the same level of services as the space available to all guests.

For Comparison’s Sake

Obviously, this is Carnival Cruise Line’s first foray into the high-end suite game. And while the suite itself is pretty sweet, there’s not a lot of “there” there, as they say, for the price.

For example, during the same week as my sailing, several Norwegian Cruise Line ships had suites available in their high-end retreat, The Haven. Those staterooms come with access to a private bar, restaurant, and pool, not to mention butler and concierge services.

Interestingly, guests in the far-less expensive Havana staterooms on board Mardi Gras have exclusive access to the Havana retreat, which does feature a private bar as well as a smallish pool.

If Carnival truly wants to compete in the high-end game — and that certainly seems to be what they’re aiming for — they’ll have to step it up when it comes to what’s offered to suite guests.

Even the concierge service — which was essentially a phone number as opposed to a dedicated desk, as you’ll find in The Haven — proved disappointing, as they were unable to secure either of the two dinner reservations I requested and weren’t even able to switch my dining time from late to any time.

I can’t emphasize enough that none of these things had a negative impact on my sailing in any substantial way.

I’m offering these comments and criticisms only as a way of making sure people who lay down the big bucks for one of these suites know exactly what they are — and what they aren’t — getting.

Mardi Gras is an amazing ship, and I can’t wait to sail her again. But when I do, it will likely be in my usual balcony stateroom. I won’t have access to Loft 19, but I’ll be pretty darn happy down in the Serenity Retreat.

carnival cruise mardi gras suites
