Passengers see dramatic raft rescue from cruise ship balcony: 'Heart-wrenching experience'

Cruise passengers see dramatic raft rescue.

A Port Canaveral-based cruise ship saved six men stranded in the ocean. It happened near the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, and people on board the Carnival Vista watched the rescue unfold from their balconies.

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. - A Port Canaveral-based cruise ship saved six men stranded in the ocean. It happened near the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, and people on board the Carnival Vista watched the rescue unfold from their balconies.

The cruise ship saved six people, and the U.S. Coast Guard saved six others who were drifting in the ocean. Passengers on board are still in shock, but thankful everyone is alive.

An orange life raft was nearly swallowed by the sea after a boat sank off the coast of the Dominican Republic.

Passengers came out to see the rough seas from their balconies and ended up seeing a rescue unfold on their vacation.

"It was something we’ve never seen, and hopefully we don’t ever see it again," said Lacey Farrington.

She says the entire rescue took about an hour, and she wasn’t sure if they’d make it to safety.

"I was worried about it because the water looked like it kept getting closer and closer to the ring of the raft, and was like – I hope they get over here," she exclaimed.

The cruise ship rescued six people from the flimsy orange raft, but six others were still out there. Victoria Foster captured the others floating away.

"It was definitely a heart-wrenching experience," said Victoria Foster who was worried the others wouldn’t be saved.

The Coast Guard stepped in and was able to find and save the other stranded men using a helicopter and lift them to safety.

"It was a relief to know that they were safe. It was, that was all I was worried about," Foster concluded.

The men were taken to the hospital, and the coast guard says, all 12 survivors are doing okay after a terrifying ordeal in the ocean.

There’s still no official word on what exactly caused the men’s boat to sink in the first place. The coast guard says the weather was less than ideal for a rescue like this and credits training and hard work to the successful mission.

MIAMI (WSVN) - Carnival Vista’s team rescued six men stranded in the waters near the Dominican Republic, early Wednesday morning.

The rescue operation followed the overnight capsizing of a small cargo vessel. While the cruise ship’s officers successfully saved the stranded individuals, a search continues for six crew members still missing from the cargo vessel.

Under the leadership of Captain Paolo Severini, Carnival Vista altered its course upon receiving the emergency alert from an onboard monitoring system.

The ship’s officers spotted the six men on a life raft, conducted a successful rescue, and notified Coast Guard authorities in the Dominican Republic about the missing crew members.

Carnival Vista Rescues Six People After Cargo Vessel Capsizes

  • December 13, 2023

Carnival Vista at Sea Rescue

The Carnival Vista team saved six men stranded in the ocean near the Dominican Republic, the company announced in a statement.

The rescue operation took place early this morning after a small cargo vessel capsized overnight while sailing in the Caribbean.

Carnival Vista’s officers under the direction of Captain Paolo Severini immediately altered the ship’s course, in coordination with Carnival’s Fleet Operations Center in Miami, when an onboard monitoring system received an emergency alert.

The ship’s officers then spotted six men on a life raft and stopped to rescue them and bring them onboard, the company said.

The Carnival team also informed Coast Guard officials in the Dominican Republic about additional missing crew members. The officials launched a search and rescue operation for the six remaining crew members and advised the Carnival Vista to return to its route.

The Carnival Vista is currently offering a six-night cruise to the Western Caribbean. The itinerary hasn’t been affected by the rescue operation, Carnival said.

Homeported in Port Canaveral, Florida, the vessel is set to visit Amber Cove, in the Dominican Republic, as scheduled. The cruise also features visits to Nassau, in the Bahamas, and Grand Turk, in Turks and Caicos.

Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet has been involved in several rescue operations this year. In August, the Mardi Gras saved a stranded couple who was stranded about 20 nautical miles from Castle Island, in the Bahamas.

In May, the Carnival Dream also assisted in a rescue operation that safely recovered 17 people who were stranded in the Belize Channel.

Meanwhile, in April, the Carnival Spirit crew safely rescued 24 people in the Caribbean Sea. While sailing near Aruba, the vessel spotted the group stranded in a small boat .

In March, Carnival Valor’s crew also saved three Hondurans from a small boat adrift in the Gulf of Mexico.

Crew members of a Carnival cruise ship rescued two men stranded in the Gulf of Mexico Monday.

Workers aboard the Carnival Jubilee spotted the pair paddling in a small yellow and orange kayak off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

The men paddled the kayak alongside the large cruise ship and the crew helped them up onto the vessel, according to the cruise line and photos of the rescue.

They said their boat had sank and they used the kayak to stay afloat, Carnival said in a statement.

Once safely aboard the cruise ship, the pair were evaluated by Carnival’s medical staff and given first aid as well as food and water.

Crew members let Carnival’s fleet operation center staff in Miami know of their rescue and both contacted Mexican Navy officials. They arranged a transfer and a Navy boat came to pick up the two kayakers soon after the initial rescue, Carnival said.

Two men paddle in a kayak in the ocean.

The cruise ship then continued with its voyage — heading to Mahogany Bay, Roatan which it visited on Tuesday.

The rescue is the second time a Carnival ship has saved people stranded in the ocean in a little more than a month.

Crew on the Carnival Vista ship rescued six men who were floating on a life raft in the dark ocean off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 13.

The captain received an emergency alert about the stranded men and immediately steered the ship towards them — and away from its planned course — to save them.

Crew members look out the door as a ship pulls up.

Carnival officers aboard the ship spotted the men on a bright orange, reflective life raft through the darkness of the early morning and brought them aboard the ship.

The men’s small cargo vessel had capsized overnight and another six who were on the boat were on another life raft — which was later located and rescued by the Coast Guard.

The dramatic rescue was filmed by a Carnival Vista passenger who posted the clip to TikTok. One person off-camera can be heard exclaiming how “insane” the experience was in the video.

Mystery ship capsizes in Caribbean Sea, creating massive oil spill

Emergency workers in Trinidad and Tobago are racing to clean up a massive oil spill after a mystery vessel ran aground near the Caribbean islands, casting a pall over Carnival tourism.

The spill was "not under control" as of Sunday, said Prime Minister Keith Rowley , who added that the country is grappling with a national emergency.

The mystery vessel capsized Wednesday, having made no emergency calls, with no sign of crew, and no clear sign of ownership.

Rowley on Sunday declared a national emergency as oil leaking from the vessel affected nearly 10 miles of coastline.

"Cleaning and restoration can only begin as soon as we have the situation under control. Right now the situation is not under control," the prime minister told journalists.

Divers have so far been unable to plug the leak.

Hundreds of volunteers have been toiling since Thursday to halt the spread of the oil, and the government has asked for even more to lend a hand. Images and video released by the government showed crews working late into the night Sunday.

The leak has damaged a reef and Atlantic beaches, and residents of the village of Lambeau have been advised to wear masks or temporarily relocate.

The government posted satellite imagery on social media, showing affected areas.

"The satellite imagery reveals a distinctive silver-like slick emanating from the overturned wrecked vessel. Additionally, there are noticeable streaks of a thick, black-like substance accompanying the spill," the post says.

The spill comes at the height of Carnival, threatening the tourist business that is crucial to the dual-island nation's economy.

Just how badly tourism will be affected remains unclear. A cruise ship carrying 3,000 people docked in Tobago on Sunday.

Rowley said the mystery vessel might have been involved in "illicit" business, adding: "We don't know who it belongs to. We have no idea where it came from, and we also don't know all that it contains."

Divers spotted the name "Gulfstream" on the craft's side and have identified a length of cable, possibly indicating it was in the process of being towed, Rowley said.

The island's Emergency Management Agency said there were no signs of life on the vessel, which is around 330 feet in length. The agency has posted dozens of images and videos on social media showing the ship and crews scrambling to contain and clean up the oil spill.

Men stranded at sea after boat sinks are rescued by Carnival cruise ship, photos show

Two men were stranded at sea after their boat sank in the Gulf of Mexico.

The boaters were found by crew members of the Carnival Jubilee cruise ship, according to a Jan. 29 news release from the cruise line.

The men were inside a kayak that they used to stay afloat, the cruise line said.

“The ship’s team members spotted the two men off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Mexico and quickly rescued them,” according to Carnival.

The men were brought onboard and treated by the ship’s medical staff and given food, Carnival officials said.

“The ship’s team and Carnival’s Fleet Operation Center staff in Miami kept in close contact with Mexican Navy officials and arranged a transfer, which was completed shortly after the rescue,” the news release said.

It’s unclear how the men’s boat sank or how long they were stranded.

The cruise ship had set sail from Galveston, Texas , according to KTRK.

Pregnant Disney Cruise Passenger Airlifted Off Ship by U.S. Coast Guard: See Video

The 'Disney Fantasy' was 180 miles out at sea when Coast Guard members responded to a medical emergency involving the 35-year-old patient

  • The Disney Cruise Line ship was located 180 miles from land when the Coast Guard responded to the call

A pregnant passenger aboard the Disney Fantasy was airlifted from the ship after experiencing health complications on April 15.

The Disney Cruise Line vessel was 180 miles northwest of Puerto Rico in the Atlantic Ocean when the passenger “required a higher level of medical care ashore,” according to an April 16 press release from the U.S. Coast Guard.

A video of the incident shows the Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter aircrew executing a medevac in order to transport the patient safely to land by helicopter.

In the harrowing clip, an aircrew member gets lowered by rope onto the ship and at least seven crew members are seen carrying the woman on a stretcher. Per the release, the aircrew’s rescue swimmer then “prepared a rescue basket and litter to safely hoist the patient and cruise ship doctor aboard the aircraft.”

The patient was met by local emergency medical responders at the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She was then transported to the local Centro Medico Hospital.

According to the release, Coast Guard members first got the call that there was a medical emergency aboard the ship on the morning of Monday, April 15.

“Watchstanders in Sector San Juan received a communication from the Disney Fantasy Monday morning requesting medevac assistance as the cruise ship was transiting 260 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico,” according to the release.

Lt. Cmdr. Todd Stephens stated in the release: “Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required. Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.
