The good news is that you do not have to do that. RVs use carriage bolts, and you have an assurance that these bolts will not turn even when you take off the nut. You just need to spray the nut with a bit of WD-40 to loosen the rust, and it should go off quite easily.

When your rig gets to be a certain age, an RV steps upgrade might be in order. Modifying fifth wheel or travel trailer steps makes your rig look better. You also feel more secure when entering and exiting the rig.

But just how exactly do you modify RV steps? Is that something that requires waiting for RV service centers to get back to you about? Nope!

You don’t need to visit an RV service center, or spend a ton of money either. Anyone can do this kind of RV steps upgrade in minutes with just a little cash and effort.

What to consider before rv steps upgrades to motorhomes, trailers and truck campers.

Let’s get personal. How much do you weigh? You don’t need to tell me the answer, but you do need to consider your body weight when you buy new RV stairs.

Many RV stairs have welded points that weaken over time. The heavier the user, and the more often they use that RV, the more stress that gets put on those stair welds. Eventually, RV steps can wobble, and wear out. That’s what ours did several years ago. Thankfully, we could call a friend who has welding skills.

He fixed the broken RV stair welds for us.

Don’t worry if you’re not a welder. You don’t need that level of skill to make your RV steps upgrade feel secure and look great.

RV steps upgrade idea #1: better traction.

RV step rugs don’t just make stairs look pretty. They make safer, better places to put your feet. The non-slip surface is ideal for geriatric pets and people with poor balance. Just be sure to measure your RV steps carefully.

Double check that you are buying the right shape too. Stair covers come in straight and curved “radius” stair shapes.

RV steps upgrade idea #2: Pre-made outdoor safety steps.

When we considered adopting a geriatric three-legged dog, we knew our stairs could be a problem. Our previous geriatric three-legged dogs needed extra help getting into our high-clearance Arctic Fox fifth wheel. This one would too.

We didn’t need to change RV steps , though. One day a kind RVer couple gifted the above hot tub steps to us. What a surprise to find out they work great! The top stair sits just above the last step on our trailer stairs. The bottom step and base makes solid contact with the ground. From day 1, our old dog has no problem getting in and out of the RV (with a little dog harness assistance ). And we feel more secure on the trailer steps, too!

RV stairs upgrade idea #3: add a step stabilizer

One reason RV stair welds break is “step bounce.” That last step doesn’t naturally make contact with the ground. With repeated use, the stair welds naturally weaken and eventually crack. That’s what happened to ours. Back then, I didn’t know that if you own a drill, you can do a fast RV stairs upgrade for better stability and less bounce.

The Solid Stance Step Stabilizer by Lippert is often discussed among RVers . It’s a fast, easy way to upgrade RV stairs by giving them a point of contact with the ground.

RVs have most of the comforts of home, including bathrooms, kitchens and a cozy place to lounge. However, entering and exiting RVs can be difficult for many campers. Most of the entry stairs built on RVs are unstable and often hang high over the ground.

Replacing your standard RV steps with RV steps with a platform creates a safe, sturdy entrance to your camper. Below are the 8 best RV steps with a platform. Read on to find the right set for your RV.

Econo RV Porch Step by Stromberg Carlson

These fully assembled steps are super easy to set-up with a travel trailer or fifth wheel. To install, simply unfold the staircase and attach 6 lock braces to stabilize the stairs. Of course, the stairs can easily be folded back down to transport them between campgrounds.

These RV steps include a 16-inch deep half-platform in the place of the top step. An included handrail can be installed on either side of the stairs. 3-step and 2-step versions of the Econo Stairs are available to fit different height RV door frames.

RV-Co Port-A-Steps

The Port-A-Deck platform is a proprietary system that simply folds in for transport and storage, but when expanded locks with gravity to create a secure and strong platform.  The deck is free-standing yet portable to allow for easy door level access to all types of recreational vehicles.

Attachable steps and handrails are also quick and easy to assemble without any tools. For campers who wish to use the platform as a porch, multiple decks can be joined together to create a super-sized deck.

Since many motorhomes have electric steps, which cannot be manually retracted, RV-Co also offers a Port-a-Deck extension.  This extension allows the electric steps to open and close under it without disrupting the existing steps.  The extension is 31 by 19 inches and attaches to the Port-A-Deck with a special bracket.

HCCR RV Decks & Stairs ‘ StairSafe

RV Decks & Stairs is a joint venture between HCCR out of Fountain Hills, Arizona and Steel Works out of Henderson, Nevada. They make both RV steps without a deck (StairLite) and RV steps with a platform (StairSafe).

The StairSafe RV steps have stairs that can be set up as center, left side or right side entry. The entire unit assembles or disassembles in less than 5 minutes and fits in most RV storage compartments.

Sunrise Decks Kingston Series

Sunrise Decks’ Kingston Series Steps feature a 45 by 45 inch platform. The stairs are available in two different heights. The 24 series has a maximum height of 24 inches, and is a good fit for most Class A motorhomes.

While the 40 series has a longer maximum height and is suitable for travel trailers and fifth wheels. Both series have telescoping legs and adjustable steps allowing you to level the stairs with your RV. Sunrise Decks for RVs are portable and can be setup without any tools.

Sunrise Decks Sequoia Series

The Sequoia Series stairs by Sunrise Decks have similar features to the Kingston Series stairs, but feature a larger platform. The top deck on the Sequoia Series is 57 by 57 inches. The steps are also further away from the RV, allowing for two handrails.

DIY RV Steps with a Platform

If you are searching for wood RV steps with a platform or a full RV deck, considering building them yourself. Below are links to instructional videos from other RV campers who have built their own stairs.

Portable Wooden RV Steps with a Platform

YouTube creators RetiredRenewedRerouted created portable, wooden RV stairs with large, platform-style steps. They built the plywood stairs in pieces, so they can easily be taken down and stored in the back of the pickup truck during travel.

The top landing is built from 3 1×6 boards, while the lower steps are built from 2 1×6 boards. These steps cost just over $100 to make, which is significantly cheaper than any premade RV stairs. Watch their video for more details and instructions on creating your own DIY RV steps.

DIY RV Deck

If you are hoping for more than a platform, consider building a full deck off the side of your RV. Check out Caper Camper’s YouTube video with instructions on how to build an RV deck.

While their deck is not suitable for travel, it does move when you need to move the RV. A full DIY RV deck is perfect for campers who have an annual campsite or park their RV on their own property.

Other RV Step Products

If installing or building RV steps with a platform is too costly or time consuming, there are other ways to make your RV stairs safer and more stable.

RV Step Cover

Most RV steps are made of metal, and easily become slippery in wet and cold weather. Wrapping your RV stairs with step covers, creates better traction for campers entering the RV.

Covers, like the Camco Step Rug, also help to cut down the amount of dirt tracked into the RV. Camco’s covers are weather and mildew resistant, so they can be left, on even in the rain.

Platform RV Step

Platform steps are sturdy platforms meant to be placed at the bottom of fold-down RV stairs. Platform steps, like the Camco one pictured above, provide a stable last step when exiting the RV.

RV Step Stabilizer

Also made by Camco, the Self-Stor Save-A-Step is an under step mount to stabilize RV stairs. This under-mounted stabilizer is secured under the bottom step like a jack, in order to secure the stairs and prevent rocking.

Keeping the RV stairs stabilized also prevents sag and wear over time. The stabilizer is made from heavy-gauge steel with a 3/4 inch solid metal screw thread and has a 1000 pound rating.

17 Travel Trailer Upgrades That Are Well Worth the Money

Travel trailers are great on their own, but seeing how fancy you can make them with upgrades can be a lot of fun. However, some upgrades can be quite pricey, and it can be difficult to determine whether they are truly worth burning a hole in your wallet.

That’s why I’ve compiled a list of 17 upgrades that are well worth the money.

1. Larger Propane Tanks

Propane tank refills are easy to come by in some places, but this isn’t always the case. If this is the case, and you find yourself using up a lot of propane, getting a larger propane tank can be a great upgrade.

2. Solar Panels

Adding solar panels to your travel trailer is also a worthwhile investment. Honestly, the only thing you need to charge and store power for them is sunlight. That means they can even charge while you are driving. What a neat idea!

The option of using solar power when boondocking or visiting a campsite without electric hookups may be appealing to some campers.

As a matter of fact, the cost of installing solar panels has been steadily decreasing over the last few years. And if hiring professionals to do the job is still out of your budget, installing solar panels yourself isn’t that difficult.

Step-by-step is provided here on how to install solar panels on your own.

Most RV owners agree that solar panels are by far the best addition to their rig. Once installed, you’ll have free power and your batteries will always be fully charged, so you’ll never be without power while traveling.

3. Cold Weather Package

A cold weather package is a great investment if you prefer to live in your travel trailer or camp year-round.

In the winter, no matter where you live, it can get pretty cold–even if it’s only cold at night–and everyone knows that. When the weather turns cold, many campers decide not to use their travel trailers because of the discomfort.

It’s possible to avoid these annoyances and still have a fun time on your adventures with a cold-weather package. It is possible that a heating system for propane can be included in a cold-weather package, as well as an underbelly cover made of thick plastic and a tank heater to prevent freezing and bursting.

Professional packages are widely available, but doing it yourself is possible if you’re willing to put in some time and effort.

4. Automatic Stabilizing Jacks

Travel trailer leveling and stabilization can be a time-consuming and frustrating task. Upgrading to automatic stabilizing jacks will take care of all the tedious work for you, saving you time and aggravation.

Automatic stabilizing jacks can often be operated via a control panel included in the jack or even a smartphone app. Isn’t it amazing how simple it is?

5. Built-in Generator

If you do a lot of boondocking or prefer to live in your travel trailer, a built-in generator can be a great upgrade.

If you plan to run your travel trailer on the batteries for a long period of time, you may want to invest in a more powerful portable generator like this one.

If you intend to use your air conditioner for an extended period of time while traveling, a built-in generator is an excellent option because it provides just the right amount of power without running out.

6. LED Lights

Replacement of the old travel trailer lights with LED lights is a worthwhile upgrade. There is nothing worse than having to constantly replace the lights in your travel trailer, especially when they aren’t of the best quality.

That’s why I installed LED lights in my travel trailer. In addition to being brighter and lasting longer, they also require far less upkeep than their predecessors. When compared to the average light travel trailer, these can take the hard bumps and sharp turns of the rough roads you’ll be traveling on.

Using LED lights instead of incandescent bulbs can help you save money on your utility bills.

7. Battery Monitor

One of the best upgrades that you can make to your travel trailer is a battery monitor. If you’re going to be installing solar panels, this is a must-have.

As long as there is some sunlight, solar panels can charge your battery fairly consistently, but knowing when to recharge your travel trailer batteries is always useful.

It’s difficult to know how long your batteries will last without a battery monitor, but that’s not a problem anymore. Basically, a battery monitor tells you how much charge is left in your batteries with a simple glance.

Use a battery monitor to ensure that you don’t run out of power in an emergency because you didn’t know how long your batteries were going to last you. This is a great benefit. If you ever find yourself in that situation, you’ll want to think twice about it. No one wants to go through that.

8. Improved Roof Seals

Everyone knows that having a roof leak is one of the worst and most common “disasters” that can occur in a travel trailer. Repairs can run into the thousands of dollars, especially if you don’t catch it right away. Honestly, it’s a little disgusting.

You can avoid all of that hassle by using a simple sealant to improve the seals on your roof. The only thing you need to do is apply the sealant over the original roof seals, and it will extend the life of the seals and save you money in the long run.

Eternabond Tape is a personal favorite. It is available in a variety of lengths and widths, and the price is reasonable when compared to the overall cost of roofing tape. Tape over the original seals on your roof, and you’ll have protection for several years. That’s a lot longer than the typical six-month lifespan of most roof sealants.

It’s worth the money to upgrade the roof of your travel trailer because it could save you thousands of dollars in the future in roof repairs.

9. Roof Vent Fan

If you’ve read my article on stealth camper vans, specifically the section on how to build up your own stealth camper van, you know that roof vent fans are essential.

If you don’t already have a fan, a travel trailer can become unbearably hot and stifling during the summer months. Invest in a roof vent fan to keep the heat and discomfort at bay.

When it’s hot outside, a roof vent fan can keep you cool while also removing excess moisture, and it can even filter out odors from the kitchen when it’s humid. It’s a fantastic and useful upgrade that’s well worth the money.

The Fantastic Fan is one of my preferred choices for roof vent fans.

10. Back-up Camera

Have you ever seen the people who are able to perfectly back out their travel trailers? Think about it: do you really believe they are that good, with that much knowledge and expertise? Personally, I’m not convinced.

In order to back up and maneuver their travel trailer so precisely, they’re probably using a backup camera. Believe it or not, it’s worth every penny.

In addition to your side and rear-view mirrors, the backup camera will make it so much easier for you to manoeuvre your travel trailer that you’ll look like a pro.

No doubt, some of the cameras can be a bit pricey and time-consuming to install, but there are wireless backup cameras out there that simply connect the live footage to your phone, or you can go with a more typical version of backup cameras that have an entire system to make backing up your travel trailer a lot easier.

With backup cameras in your travel trailer, you’ll never want to go back to using only your mirrors and a friend outside to give you signals on how far and which ways to turn again. Trust me.

11. Surge Protectors

A surge protector is an excellent next investment for your travel trailer. If you’ve ever experienced a power surge while using shore power at a campground, you’ll understand why this is such a smart idea.

In the event of a power surge, your electrical appliances could be severely damaged and require costly replacements. A surge protector will prevent you from having to deal with this, as the name suggests.

Surge protectors basically keep an eye on the voltage coming into your travel trailer from the mains. The surge will automatically disconnect from the power source if a high or low voltage is detected. This is done to protect your electrical appliances. It’s well worth the money because it’ll save you from a lot of frustration and guesswork.

To be fair, it isn’t cheap to buy surge protectors. However, the cost of repairs after a major power surge is prohibitively expensive in comparison. A surge protector like this one is a great choice.

12. Propane Regulator

Adding a propane regulator to your travel trailer is also a good idea because it will improve safety.

This list has a pattern, haven’t you noticed? All of these upgrades are meant to make your RV life easier, safer, and save you money in the long run.)

There are many ways to regulate the flow and pressure of propane, but a propane regulator is one of the most important. This upgrade will spare you a slew of headaches in the future.

Propane technicians can help you devise a strategy and determine which route to take when it comes to purchasing and installing a propane regulator.

13. Replace the Storage Bay Locks

Right now, I’m going to do something that will absolutely blow your mind. Do you have what it takes? Almost all RV and travel trailer storage bay locks are the same.

Not yet blown? Where it all begins. Using the same key unlocks all of the locks. As a result, anyone with the exact same lock as you could easily break into your storage bay without causing any real damage. This means.

This key is most likely a CH751 unless it has already been changed out, in which case it will be the same. This type of key is used in a large number of RVs and travel trailers.

This is why, in my opinion, changing your locks is necessary. Of course, it’s far more likely that someone who isn’t entirely trustworthy will discover that they have the right keys in their safe to break into just about anyone’s safety, but it never hurts to be extra cautious.

While you’re at it, you might as well invest in a better lock that will keep your belongings safer and last a lot longer than the one that came standard with your travel trailer.

14. Under Bed Storage Light

Under the bed is a commonplace to store items in travel trailers, but it can be a hassle if it gets too dark and you can’t see what’s there.

Simply because it makes it so much easier to see what you’re doing and what’s in that storage space underneath the bed to install a string of lights there is a worthwhile upgrade.

A simple battery-powered light or the installation of additional LED lights in your basement will make your life a lot easier, regardless of which option you choose.

15. Digital Thermostat

If your travel trailer has thermostats, you’ll find that many of them have the old-fashioned manual slider thermostats, which aren’t always accurate. It’s a minor upgrade, but installing a digital thermostat is definitely worth the time and money.

In comparison to fiddling with an RV’s little slider thermostat, it’s much more pleasant to have temperature control at your fingertips and see it respond almost instantly and precisely.

To make things even simpler, you should be able to buy any thermostat and swap out the old one, regardless of whether it was designed for use in a travel trailer or RV.

16. Extra Waste Valve

If you’ve owned a travel trailer for a while, you should already know that emptying the waste tanks is one of the most tedious aspects of maintaining it. You’d also be aware that closing the waste valve as tightly as you can without causing damage is the most important step in emptying the tanks in order to avoid any nasty messes in the future.

Of course, you never know if it won’t leak the next time you open it because it didn’t seal properly the first time. Yes, it’s disgusting, but installing an additional waste valve completely eliminates the need for it.

As long as you screw it incorrectly, you’ll have a solution to your problem in no time. The next time you open it, there won’t be any extra drippage. Yes, I think that upgrade is worth the money.

All of us have heard that travel trailers are notorious for being short on storage space, and finding a place to put the trash can be a real snag. That’s one of the reasons I like the idea of a garbage can that can be pulled out.

With a pull-out garbage can, it is possible to hide your garbage can in a simple cabinet and keep it out of sight. Because it’s out of the way, it takes up less room, and it’s less likely to spill when you hit a pothole or a sharp turn on the road.

To keep the garbage can in place, you can use bungee cords or even a rolling system to roll it out of the cabinet like a drawer, depending on your budget.

Why did Rev. Haynes step down from Rainbow PUSH? "He did not have authority to do the job," host argues.

Dallas-based pastor reverend Frederick Haynes III stepped down this week as leader of the Chicago-based Rainbow PUSH Coalition after less than three months on the job. His abrupt departure  left many questioning what happened and why so suddenly.

Roland Martin, journalist and CEO of Black Star Network, told CBS 2 that Haynes did not have the autonomy to lead the organization as Rev. Jesse Jackson's successor.

"You had the friction there," Martin said. "He did not have the full authority to actually do the job."

Martin, who knows both Jackson and Haynes well, said Jackson hadn't really fully ceded control of the organization he founded in 1971.

"You can't continue to frankly have the reins of an organization when you turn it over to somebody else. That's really what you had here.

"There's no bad blood, there's no anger. It's an issue Rainbow PUSH has to contend with. What is your plan forward to continue the legacy of reverend Jackson."

Rainbow PUSH is also suffering from a bit of an identity crisis and has slipped in stature, Martin said. Chicago is no longer the epicenter of the Black community, Martin said. Now, the population has shifted to the Atlanta area.

Suffering from Parkinson's, the 82-year-old Jackson is not the galvanizing force he used to be, Martin said. He said that now requires a new "leadership model" for the organization.

"They cannot continue to be built solely around Reverend Jackson," Martin said.

"They are no longer considered one of the major civil rights organizations in this country."

In July, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition officially transferred leadership to Haynes as Jackson transitioned to emeritus status.

Jackson founded Rainbow PUSH in 1971, dedicating itself to social justice, civil rights education, and job placement for Black youth. The organization has never had another leader than Jackson until Haynes.

Following Haynes' resignation, Jesse Jackson said his son, Yusef Jackson, will continue to serve as Chief Operating Officer.
