Underwood’s latest album, Denim & Rhinestones, arrives on June 10th. The singer reunited with David Garcia for the project, who, along with Underwood, co-produced her last two records, 2018’s Cry Pretty and 2021’s My Savior. Pre-orders are available now. Earlier this month, the artist headlined the Stagecoach Festival, where she brought out Axl Rose to perform the Guns N’ Roses classics “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City.”

You canât put Carrie Underwood in a box
After a remarkably versatile show in salt lake city thursday night, it would be a disservice to say underwood is solely a country artist.
By Lottie Elizabeth Johnson
After floating over the crowd on a pink floral swing, Carrie Underwood gently landed on a small platform, picked up a guitar and began to sing â Two Black Cadillacs ,â a dark ballad about two women who exact murderous revenge on a cheating man.
Following that ominous number, Underwood seamlessly transitioned to a vastly different theme â her Savior. The singer gave her congregation of 20,000 a sermon about the importance of being nice to one another and lifting each other up. She then sang one of her earliest hits, the soul-searching âJesus Take the Wheel,â before performing a soul-stirring chorus of âHow Great Thou Art.â
Seven songs later, Underwood was donning a black leather Guns Nâ Roses jacket and channeling her inner Axl Rose with a cover of âWelcome to the Jungle.âÂ
She has 25 CMT Awards , 16 Academy of Country Music awards and nine Country Music Association awards â not to mention eight Grammys â but after a remarkably versatile show in Salt Lake City Thursday night, it would be a disservice to say Underwood is solely a country artist.
Sheâs so much more.Â
The shocking versatility of Carrie Underwood
Throughout her nearly two-hour set, Underwoodâs music had hints of country, gospel, pop, soul, jazz, blues and hard rock. One song would mimic Dolly Partonâs soft, lilting style, and the next would elicit a rasp that wouldâve been right at home with Axl and his cronies. One minute the arena felt like a small chapel and the next it was a full on rock show, complete with Underwood pounding out an unexpected drum solo.
Itâs a conglomeration of her many influences. Underwood, an Oklahoma native, grew up on gospel and country, but she recently told Rolling Stone sheâs always been âmesmerizedâ by Roseâs vocal style and has spent a lot of time trying to emulate it. Earlier this year, she even convinced Rose to join her at the Stagecoach Festival. A few months later, Guns Nâ Roses reciprocated and invited Underwood onstage for a show in London.Â
Itâs a shocking versatility, and Underwood doesnât hold back. In Salt Lake City, she rose from beneath the stage and hit the ground running. She threw her body and soul into each song â from the first note of her opening number, âGood Girl,â to the middle of her set with the emotional âCry Pretty,â which earned her a standing ovation before she even hit the last note, to the final chord of her closer, âBefore He Cheats.âÂ
With a voice like that, you donât need much else to entertain a crowd.
But Underwoodâs voice is just one part of the equation.Â
More than a voice
Underwoodâs live show is a spectacle â a glittery surface that belies the gritty nature of many of her songs.
In a similar vein to Kiss, the singer channels her hard rock side with pink streamers, fire, sparks and elaborate aerial contraptions to move her across the arena. Her several outfit changes â from a sparkly ensemble to a traditional Western getup to a leather jacket â mirror the fact that she is no one-trick pony.Â
To make a long story short: You canât put Carrie Underwood in a box.
She puts on a staggering production, and you canât help but marvel at how she does this night after night. Itâs as physically demanding as it is vocally, and she doesnât give herself much time to rest â anytime she leaves the stage is for an outfit change.
But there is a little give and take with this kind of production. Underwood provides a stunning visual component that is impossible to glean from an album. But the intensity of her show means the nuances of her music â like the storytelling quality and dynamics that are so exposed on her recordings â get a little lost. For the most part, Underwood performed at the same volume for two hours. Itâs an impressive volume, though, and at times it was still hard to hear her, so she needed to be loud.Â
The set list appears to be largely the same from show to show. Arena shows are generally well-oiled machines, and considering all of the intricacies of Underwoodâs production â including specific projections that go with each song â it would be hard to substantially deviate. But the singer still manages to create unique moments with her fans, like opening an envelope and revealing to a couple in the audience that they would be having a baby girl (she encouraged them to name that girl Carrie).Â
A proposal for Carrie Underwood
When recently describing her newest album, âDenim and Rhinestones,â the singer said in a statement : âYou have these things that are great on their own and then you put them together and they just fit.âÂ
The same can be said for Underwoodâs live shows. The way she performs, you may find yourself wondering why âWelcome to the Jungleâ and âHow Great Thou Artâ arenât paired together more often.Â
In the last four years, Underwood has released two country-pop albums, Christmas music and a gospel record. When her âDenim and Rhinestonesâ tour wraps up, Underwood should hurry to the studio to record a rock album.Â
Based on her reception in Salt Lake City, it might just work.

Carrie Underwood is taking her new music on the road: She has just announced her extensive Denim & Rhinestone s Tour, which will kick off on October 15 in Greenville, S.C, and last through spring 2023.
The tour takes its name from her upcoming new album, Denim & Rhinestones , which is out on June 10. "I'm thrilled to be hitting the road again with the Denim & Rhinestones Tour. I'm having such an amazing time with my Las Vegas residency and look forward to continuing that next year after the tour," she explains in a press release. Tickets for the Denim & Rhinestones Tour go on sale Friday, May 20, at 10AM local time. A portion of the proceeds will go towards the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which works to provide mortgage-free homes for injured veterans and first responders and the families of fallen front line members.

As the final nominations for the 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards were announced Tuesday morning (April 9), there were the usual number of expected names, as well as a handful of surprises and snubs.
Luke Combs leads all nominees with eight nods, and should he win entertainer of the year, he will clinch the Triple Crown Award — bestowed upon acts who, in addition to having won entertainer, have also taken home the trophy for new artist and artist in their eligible categories. Only a handful of artists have snagged the Triple Crown, including Chris Stapleton, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood and Kenny Chesney.
Both Megan Moroney and Morgan Wallen received six nominations, with Cody Johnson , Chris Stapleton and Lainey Wilson garnering five nods each.
Tracy Chapman joins the first-timers’ club, scoring her first nod for writing song of the year nominee âFast Car,â performed by Combs. Another first time nominee is Morgane Stapleton, who is nominated as a producer on her husband Chris Stapletonâs album, Higher , which received an album of the year nod.
The eligibility period for nominations runs Jan. 1, 2023-December 31, 2023, which means fans will have to wait another year to see if current Country Albums chart topper Cowboy Carter from Beyoncé is nominated, since the crossover set was released in March.
The ACM Awards will stream live across 240+ countries and territories on Prime Video on May 16 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT/5 p.m. PT from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. Here is a look at some of the yearâs notable surprises and snubs.
DCP is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a Penske Media Corporation (PMC) subsidiary and joint venture between PMC and Eldrige. PMC is the parent company of Billboard.
Snub: Zach Bryan
By any measure, Zach Bryan had a phenomenal year in 2023, selling out arenas across the U.S. and opening at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart with his self-titled album, as well as topping Billboard âs Hot Country Songs chart twice, including with his Kacey Musgraves duet, âI Remember Everything” (which also topped the Billboard Hot 100). Bryan is nominated for three awards — music event of the year as artist and producer of âI Remember Everything,â and for artist-songwriter of the yearâ but he’s on the outside for entertainer of the year, male artist of the year and song or single of the year. He is signed to Warner Records out of Los Angeles instead of directly to a Nashville label, which may somewhat account for the snub, as his label mate, Warren Zeiders, was also shut out. – M.N.
Surprise: Jelly Roll
Jelly Roll received four nominations. The only real surprise here is that this is the first year that Jelly Roll has been nominated: He was shut out last year, and this yearâs four nominations, including entertainer of the year, are a reminder of just how far and fast he has come since last year. He is the first artist since Billy Ray Cyrus 32 years ago to be nominated for entertainer of the year in his first year of receiving any nominations. Jelly Roll, who swept the CMT Awards earlier this week, is also nominated for male artist, single and music event of the year. – M.N.
Snub: Bailey Zimmerman
Zimmerman earned two Country Airplay chart hits last year, including the six-week No. 1 “Rock and a Hard Place,” as well as the chart-topper “Religiously,” and saw his project Religiously. The Album. debut at No. 3 on the Top Country Albums chart (in addition to leading his own headlining tour and opening shows for Morgan Wallen). Still, Zimmerman earned no nominations. Though he was nominated in the category last year, Zimmerman wasn’t among this year’s new male artist nominees (ACM rules allow an artist to be nominated twice during a three-year period). — J.N.
Surprise: Megan Moroney
Megan Moroney received six nominations, leading all female artists. The newcomer lands her first nominations including nods for new female artist of the year and female artist of the year, the only woman to appear in both categories this year. In addition to landing two nominations for song of the year entry and top five Country Airplay hit âTennessee Orange,â as both performer and songwriter, Moroney gets a nod for âCanât Break Up Now,â her duet with Old Dominion, for music event of the year. – M.N.
Snub: Carly Pearce
After being nominated for four awards last year, including female artist and song of the year, Carly Pearce received zero nominations this year, despite releasing a beautiful duet with Chris Stapleton, âWe Donât Fight Anymore.â The four-time past winner had been nominated for female artist of the year several times in the past, taking home the award in 2022. Similarly, her collaborations had often garnered music event of the year nominations, including wins for âI Hope Youâre Happy Nowâ with Lee Brice at the 2020 awards and âNever Wanted to Be That Girlâ with Ashley McBryde in 2022. – M.N.
Surprise: Dylan Scott
Scott, who earned a No. 1 Country Airplay hit last year with “Can’t Have Mine,” is among this year’s nominees for new male artist of the year, alongside ERNEST, Kameron Marlowe, Conner Smith and Nate Smith. It’s a boon for Scott, who released his first country radio single, “Makin’ This Boy Go Crazy,” back in 2013. This isn’t the first time he’s been nominated in this category; he first garnered a nod in the same category last year (an artist may be a nominee two times in a three-year period, per ACM guidelines).
“Can’t Have Mine (Find You A Girl)” marks Scott’s third Country Airplay No. 1 hit, following his 2017 chart leader “My Girl” and 2022’s “New Truck.” — J.N.
Snub: Oliver Anthony Music
Few country artists blazed as fast and bright a trail as Oliver Anthony Music (real name: Christopher Anthony Lunsford) in 2023. Last summer, his viral hit âRich Men North of Richmond” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making him the first artist to achieve that feat without having any prior chart history on any Billboard chart. The self-released song, which became a flashpoint for conservatives (despite Lundsford disavowing any specific political leanings), also topped Billboard âs Hot Country Songs chart. Perhaps his lack of follow-up in the eligibility period and lack of ties to Nashville led to his receiving no nominations, but he seemed a lock for a new male artist of the year nod. – M.N.
Snubs: Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert
Lambert and Underwood have both been mainstays at the ACM Awards, with Lambert winning the ACM’s entertainer of the year honor in 2022 (she’s had seven overall nominations in the category). Underwood has previously taken home the ACM’s entertainer of the year honor three times (in 2009 and 2010, and co-won it in 2020).
So it is odd to see neither artist’s name in the running for the show’s top honor. Underwood released the deluxe version of her Denim & Rhinestones album, spearheaded by songs like “Take Me Out,” and continued with her “Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency” last year. She also opened three shows for rock titans Guns N’ Roses.
Meanwhile, Lambert leaned into her songwriting prowess, penning songs recorded by several artists for their albums, while continuing her own Velvet Rodeo residency in Las Vegas. She also teamed with Leon Bridges for a collaboration, and launched the Big Loud Texas label in conjunction with Big Loud. — J.N.
Surprise: Lainey Wilson
Given the seeming omnipresence of Wilson both on the Country Airplay chart, on numerous performance stages and in the media over the past year (in addition to the accumulation of other awards accolades she’s earned), it’s no surprise that Wilson is in the running for this year’s ACM entertainer of the year honor.
If Wilson were to win the EOY accolade, she would earn the coveted ACM Triple Crown honor, which is presented to an artist, duo or group who has earned their respective new artist and artist category, as well as the entertainer of the year honor. Previous Triple Crown honorees have included Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney and Chris Stapleton. Wilson won the new female artist of the year win in 2022 and the female artist of the year honor last year. Given that Wilson earned her first ACM Award just a few years ago (along with her first Country Airplay No. 1), it is the speed of her ascendance to the Triple Crown circle that would be the surprise here, if she picks up an EOY win. – J.N.

Carrie Underwood Shares The âSimpleâ Workout Routine That Keeps Her Stronger Than Ever At 41
The superstar tends to favor a mix of full-body moves and cardio.
The eight-time Grammy Award-winner, who tries to exercise every day when she can, is known for her signature leg workout. But even her gym routine was altered by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
When asked if she's switched up her fitness regime over the past few years, Carrie told WH , "I feel like we all have, whether we wanted to or not!" Serendipitously, the Grammy Award-winner debuted the at-home workout and nutrition app fit52 in early March 2020, meaning sheâand legions of other usersâcould get a sweat sesh on in the comfort of their homes.
"I was very, very blessed to have that in my own lifeâI had this app that was giving me my workouts!" she said, adding that she and her husband, former NHL player Mike Fisher , began taking advantage of the outdoors for their workouts. "Sometimes, I'm on the road and I'm doing my workouts in our mobile gym. Sometimes, things are so busy and we're running around with the kids."
"I'm just trying to fit in anything, but that's everybody," Carrie, who chatted with WH to talk about her BODYARMOR partnership. "The details might look a little different in our lives, but I feel like we're all just juggling and trying to take care of ourselves."
BODYARMOR BODYARMOR Flash IV Electrolyte Packets
When she does squeeze in a workout, the "Before He Cheats" singer says she keeps her sessions straightforward and effective. Below, here's Carrie's fitness routine to feel stronger than ever.
Carrie keeps her workouts simple.
When Carrie hits the gym, she goes for tried-and-true exercises. "I love the simple movesâsquats, lunges, deadlifts, things like that," she says. "Nothing complicated."
In 2022, Carrie's trainer Eve Overland, CPT, told WH that she and Carrie typically train for 90 minutes, including five supersets. The exercises include pullups, dumbell rows, Bulgarian split squats, and more. (Get the full workout here .)
But Carrie added that she also enjoys a good round of cardio, and she mixes up her sessions by season.
" I n the summer, when it's nice and warm, I just want to be outside," she says. "So I tend to run more in the summer and lift weights more in the winter."
She loves to try new classes.
Lately, Carrie tends to work out on her own. But if she's looking for inspirationâand isn't running outsideâshe loves to take a virtual class on her treadmill.
"It's great to pop into a class and see what's going on, and get some ideas for things I want to do or learn something new," she says. "If someone's giving me instruction, it goes faster than me being stuck on a treadmill!"
Carrie prioritizes hydration to refuel.
Finally, Carrie knows that hydration is as important as the workout itself. The singer always makes sure to keep water or a BODYARMOR drink nearby.
The most convenient option to keep in her purse, she said, is the brand's FLASH I.V. Electrolyte Sticks , which she'll mix with water for an on-the-go drink.
"One thing that I feel is so neglected in our lives is staying hydrated," she says. "It seems so simple....If you find yourself cranky... you need to drink more water! My husband will complain about a headache sometimes and I'm like, you need to drink more water."

ACM Entertainer of the Year Nominations Are Here And Fans Are Divided
Lainey Wilson and Jelly Roll are both up for Entertainer of the Year!
The nominees for the 2024 ACM Entertainer of the Year include: Kane Brown, Luke Combs , Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton , Morgan Wallen, and Lainey Wilson. With their success in the awards circuit this year, no one is surprised to see Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson on this list, but fans were outspoken on their thoughts about having only one female nominee on the list.
"Only one female nominated for entertainer?!! Do better đł", "another year of only one woman nominated for entertainer⊠lol" and "Shouldnât there be more females in this lineup? Just saying," disgruntled fans commented on the ACM Awards official Instagram account.
Lainey Wilson is also nominated for Female Artist of the Year alongside Kelsea Ballerini , Ashley McBryde, Megan Moroney, Kacey Musgraves, and Lainey Wilson. All five Male Artist of the Year Nominees (including Luke Combs, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, and Morgan Wallen) are also up for Entertainer of the Year. Chris Stapleton took home Entertainer of the Year in 2023.
Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, Megan Moroney, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, and Lainey Wilson lead the pack as the most-nominated artists overall. At the same time, country music giants like Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, Carly Pearce, Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Miranda Lambert didn't receive any awards nominations this year.
Fans jumped in the defend Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood (who are both past ACM Triple Crown recipients) in the comments, writing:
- "Seriously?? Now Carrie can't even get a nomination??"
- "Carrie not being nominated for one award is a crime!"
- "First time in so long Miranda hasnât been nominated for Female of the year but I guess she doesnât have a new album đą"
- "Wow. Miranda getting no nominations??"
Miranda Lambert also happens to be the most awarded artist in ACM history, and she won Entertainer of the Year in 2022. Carly Pearce fans were also upset with her lack of recognition. "why isnât carly pearce nominated đŁ," one fan wrote.
This year's nominations are a bit of a mixed bag, but we still can't wait to see all of our favorite country music artists in Frisco, Texas, on May 16th!
