I'm Going to Moscow

I'll be traveling to Moscow in September any tips will be appreciated!

carlos, It would help if you could provide some additional information on what "tips" you require? Are you aware that you'll require an "invitation" and a Visa prior to arrival in Russia? It will take some time and money to obtain the necessary documentation. You might have a look at the appropriate section on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree message board, as there's lots of good information there. Cheers!

I have all my paperwork ready (visa, letters etc.), what I meant with tips is places to go, what not to do, a must see etc., me and my sister had to change the our trip from Tokio to Moscow because of the earthquake.

Take a side trip to St. Petersburg, it will certainly be worth the time!

Yes, by all means go to st. Petersburg. Be aware that Moscow is a very expensive city and be prepared for bad food and lousy temperaments.

We spent 4 nights in Moscow and 4 nights in St Petersburg. St Petersburg is much more tourist-friendly whereas Moscow is just emerging. English is not very widely spoken and most signs are in the Russian Language and alphabet. Luckily we hooked up with Dan Petrov - a local resident tour guide. I found him on TripAdvisor, and I was a little skeptical to put my family in the hands of an unknown complete stranger, but boy and I GLAD we did. He's well educated, friendly, affordable, flexible - there's just nothing to dislike about him at all. You can find all of this contact information at his website: www.waytomoscow.com For St Petersburg we used Rick's book as well as a local tour guide, Elena, from www.toursbylocals.com for a 1 day field trip to Catherine's Palace. No way would we ever have gotten there and back without Elena. If you visit St Petersburg (and you really should) try out Bogart's which is a little cafe we stumbled upon via TripAdvisor. It turned out to be our lifesaver and we ate there 3 or 4 times.

Moscow is a great city to visit, but it is also difficult. It is not a "first rate" city like Tokyo or New York and is not very used to foreign tourists like St. Petersburg. That, however, does not mean it is not worth your time or that you will not have a wonderful visit. With a week, you will really not be overstretched, frankly 7 days (really 5 when you account for travel) is just right. I was told before we went to plan on seeing only one major sight a day, then anything additional is gravy. This is VERY apt. PM me if you want more specific information or help.

Lots of people come to St. Petersburg with cruise ships and most of them stay only for two days. So if you spend a couple of days in this city you'll have a chance to visit quite a few major sights. We toured St. Petersburg with Palladium Travel and managed to see the Hermitage, St. Isaac's cathedral, the Church-on-Spilt Blood, Peter-and-Paul fortress, Catherine's palace and Peterhof in just two days!
