chiang mai jungle tour

Welcome to Chiang Mai Jungle Trekking . My name is Toto

I was born in a small Lisu village in the beautiful Chiang Dao Forest and, for 25 years, I regularly take small groups back to my traditional Hill Tribe home to experience the true jungle life _ staying in real tribal huts, with real tribal people, eating real tribal food cooking using the traditional methods I fondly remember as a village child.

As well as our jungle trekking adventures, we operate a wonderful elephant sanctuary, dedicated to the care and preservation of these amazing, intelligent and loveable giants of the jungle.

Based on our 25 years of experience and our unique hill tribe relationships, we have carefully created a variety of choices that we know will more than fulfill your expectations.

We invite you to click……

Toto’s Elephant Sanctuary . We offer you a range of wonderful and unique experiences that you will never forget and will want to share with your friends. Observe the elephants in their natural environment, feeding and caring for their young and if you wish, go trekking through the rainforest. Get close to these amazing creatures but in an ethical and eco-friendly manner.

Chiangmai Elephant Land , good location for elephants on which to roam, rich forests to enjoy, beautiful waterfalls and rivers in which to bathe and relax, and provision of organic, natural foods.

What to expect on your Tree House Chiang Mai Jungle tour?

For most of our guests it is their first time venturing out on a Chiang Mai jungle tour in Thailand for an overnight stay. Therefore to help you plan for your stay we have put together a small factsheet detailing the essential information you need to know in order to make your stay as relaxed and care free as possible.

Insects and Mosquitoes

Being located in the middle of a remote mountain village surrounded by dense forests, guests are often concerned about bugs, particularly mosquitoes. Therefore, we always recommend to bring mosquito spray with you on tour, particularly for the hiking and other out-door activities that we organize. Mosquitoes are generally non existent during the during the winter months (November – Feb) as they don’t seem to enjoy the cooler mountain temps. However, as the the mercury starts to climb in March so does the insect count. The monsoon season (May – October) is when the forest is technically ‘alive’ so this is when you will encounter the most bugs. As a rule we suggest using repellent through out your stay and keeping yourselves covered up during the evening, particularly during the rainy season. All rooms come with mosquito net as well.

Trekking at the Tree House

Trekking is often one of the highlights of your stay at the tree house. The trekking is generally of a medium gradient with a few inclines, but most people are able to complete the treks. The trek to the waterfall involves crossing rivers, so prepare to get your feet wet. For the hike we recommend that you wear covered shoes with good grip (trainers are fine) not flip flops and crocs . At least knee length pants and a short-sleeved shirt. We also suggest a small back pack to carry water and a swimsuit should you decide to swim at the falls. For more info and pics about the jungle trekking experience visit our Chiang Mai Trekking Tours page.

Is the tree house safe for young families?

The short answer is Yes. We have hosted many families with children ranging from toddlers to teenagers. Our large terrace is enclosed by strong railings and a securely built wooden floor. Families seem to enjoy the fact that they can take their children out into the Thai countryside, and have a safe, secure space to return to each day.

Tree House Accommodation

Accommodation at the tree house is not 5 star, but it is clean and comfortable. Each room comes with clean bedding, mosquito net and storage space. We have a combination of ensuite bedrooms and also rooms with shared bathrooms. All bathrooms comes with a western toilet, hand basins, mirror and hot water showers.

Shared Space

The main terrace where you relax and eat is a shared space so we ask guests to respect other people’s space. We kindly ask you to adhere to the following guidelines: Please keep your voice down before 8.00am and after 10.00pm. If you want to listen to electrical music devices/tablets we ask that you use headphones, so as not to disturb other guests who may just want to listen to the ‘Sound of Nature’

Chiang Mai Jungle Trekking and Forest Bathing

Table of contents, jungle trekking in chiang mai.

A Chiang Mai Jungle Trekking or a Chiang Mai Jungle Trek became a favourite activity for, first backpackers and then tourists. In the days before there were ziplines, mountain bike tours, whitewater rafting and elephant experiences, a jungle trekking was one of the main attractions of North Thailand. These multiple-day adventures usually featured one or more overnights in hilltribe villages, bamboo rafting and elephant riding. It was not unusual that tourists went jungle trekking for four days/three nights or sometimes even longer. Because there is now a plethora of other activities available to choose from visitors most tourists go on shorter treks: one or two days.

There used to be elephant camps in trekking areas but they have mostly disappeared. Many tourists don’t want to ride elephants anymore. Trekking is not as popular as it used to be. In the perception of many people, it has lost some of its charm. Many villages can now be reached by vehicle and have electricity. The times that all the children of the village came to a house to stare at strange visitors are over. Still, Chiang Mai Jungle Trekking can be of the highlights of your trip.

This article is about jungle and forest trekking. If you are more interested in hill tribe culture, just have a look here .

Doi Inthanon tree with Ferns and mosses

The Jungle according to Reginald Le May

How do we define jungle and is there jungle in North Thailand? One of the most common definitions of the jungle is “land overgrown with tangled vegetation at ground level, especially in the tropics”. Yes, there is still plenty of jungle in North Thailand.

This definition draws a distinction between primary forest and jungle. The understorey of primary tropical forests is typically open of vegetation due to a lack of sunlight. Because of this, it is relatively easy to traverse.  Former British consul Reginald Le May described the forests of northern Thailand in his book An Asian Arcady, published in 1925…..

“Overhead the branches of the giant trees met, shading us from the rays of the sun and keeping the air delightfully cool. The rippling stream, the small cascades tumbling over the rocks, and the song of the birds all combined to make us feel the joy of life, and our spirits respond to the brightness of the scene. Many have sung their hymns in praise of the forest life, but it is only those who have actually come under its spell that can realize the peculiar fascination and beauty of a tropical forest.”

We agree: the tropical forest has this wonderful attraction: we are addicted to it!

Men hiking in the forest

Primary forest is not jungle

Poor penetration of sunlight to ground level restricts the undergrowth in some areas of tropical forests.  Natural events such as hurricanes or human activity such as logging can destroy or thin the leaf canopy of a primary forest. A dense, tangled growth of vines, shrubs and small trees then colonise the ground beneath. This creates what we call a jungle . Jungles may exist within or at the borders of, tropical forests. The successional vegetation that springs up following such disturbance of rainforest or seasonal tropical forest is dense and impenetrable. Tropical seasonal forests, such as in North Thailand, are commonly referred to as jungles of this type. The vegetation is sometimes sufficiently dense to hinder movement by humans, requiring that trekking guides cut their way through.

Chaeson Forest View

The logging ban of 1989

Most of North Thailand’s forests have been logged at least once. There is actually no primary forest left. At the end of the 19th century, the Borneo Company and the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation were the first companies that started systematically to cut teak trees. Two other British companies, the Louis T. Leonowens Company and the Anglo-Siam Corporation, and the Danish East Asiatic Company later joined logging the teak forests of the North.

For decades teak was a major export product of Siam, as Thailand was called at that time. At the end of the 1950s, the logging industry was nationalized. The foreign companies all left but logging went on unabated by local companies. The forests had more interesting hardwood to offer than teak only. After in 1989 stranded logs on a mountainside in the South, set in motion by a typhoon , flattened a whole village the Thai government issued a logging ban.

North Thailand doesn’t have rainforest

North Thailand doesn’t have rainforest . A rainforest doesn’t have a dry season. Rainforest in Thailand you can find in the deep south near the border of Malaysia, in the Hala-Bala and Bang-Lang national parks.  The forests of North Thailand are seasonal forests. There are evergreen forests close to rivers and creeks and at high elevation. Most of the forests are dry deciduous dipterocarp forests , forests that shed leaves. You can find more about North Thailand trees here .

North Thailand has a long dry season that starts at the beginning of November and lasts until the beginning of May. It rains sometimes in the beginning of November and as early as during Songkran, the Buddhist New Year. Tropical rainforests have a warm and wet climate with no substantial dry season: typically found within 10 degrees north and south of the equator.

Trail in a tropical forest Chiang Mai Jungle Trekking

Chiang Mai Jungle Trekking

We think trekking or hiking in a tropical, or any forest, is a spiritual experience. It relieves stress and makes you feel very good. There exists such a thing as “forest bathing”. There even are now certified forest therapy guides . Forest bathing is not about a sweaty forced march through the jungle to get as quickly as possible from A to B. You have to take your time and enjoy the natural surroundings, hear the sound of the birds and the crackling sound of the dry leaves on the ground. It is proven that this kind of activity has many benefits: it lowers blood pressure, stress levels and pulse rate.

We also highly recommend you to switch off your phone for the duration of the hike. It would be even better to do this for the whole tour. A bit of digital detox trekking is also very good for you! Some of the best areas to enjoy Chiang Mai jungle treks and forest bathing are of course national parks. We have a number of national park jungle trekkings.

Family of four in forest

Forest bathing in the Chaeson National Park

The Chaesorn national park is only about one hour drive from Chiang Mai. We usually drive up to the Kew Fin viewpoint and then trek to the summit of Doi Lan which is less than an hour from Kew Fin. The village Mae Kampong attracts many, mostly local, tourists but they seldom venture out on the forest trails. The trek from Doi Lan to Mae Kampong is a great forest hike, ideal for some intense forest bathing. Very rarely do we meet other people on these trails in Chaeson National park . We offer a day tour as well as a two day trip with an overnight in Mae Kampong.

Waterfall in Chaesorn National Park

Doi Inthanon Jungle Trekking

Doi Inthanon is a fantastic national park about one and a half hours drive from Chiang Mai. For real Doi Inthanon Jungle Trekking and some serious forest bathing, a day tour will not be long enough. The famous Kew Mae Pan and Pha Dok Siew nature trails are fantastic and lovely hikes but they will not take you deep into the forest. The lovely Angka Nature Trail takes you through unique mossy cloud forest but is very short. These are well-developed and maintained trails. There is a fair chance that you will meet other trekkers which disturbs your forest bathing.

For some great Doi Inthanon forest bathing our two- and three-day treks are more suitable. You will spend hours on trails that only local people use and are not developed as tourist trails. This is the real environment for forest bathing. Overnight will be in Karen villages. Here are two real Doi Inthanon forest bathing trips:

Huay Nam Dang Jungle Trekking

Huay Nam Dang National Park offers one of the classic trekking routes in North Thailand. The park is located about 1,5 hours drive northwest of Chiang Mai. Although also here there is a chance that other trekkers will disturb your forest bathing activities but it is a fantastic forest. We would definitely recommend the three-day trekking if you really want to switch off from the outside world. The two-day trek is also very good. We will take you deep into the jungle of this huge and magnificent national park. The bamboo rafting on the Mae Taeng (Taeng River) is the best in North Thailand. You will not be disappointed. Most villages in the park are Karen and Lahu . Huay Nam Dang is great for forest bathing and jungle trekking.

Chiang Dao Jungle Trekking

This is the area east of Chiang Dao town. There are many interesting tribal villages in this area such as the Dara-ang ( Palong ). It is quite scenic with its limestone ranges. We offer a large number of short tours to Chiang Dao that only include limited trekking. For the real Chiang Dao Jungle Trekking, you will need more time. If you choose the three-day trek we will take you deeper into Sri Lanna National Park. We have recently been restoring some of the old jungle trails and it is really very beautiful. You will be rewarded with fantastic views of Doi Luang Chiang Dao , the third-highest mountain of the country. For Chiang Dao Jungle Trekking and Forest Bathing we would recommend this tour:

Palm trees rice fields and mountains

Trekking to the Palong People of Chiang Dao

Doi Suthep Jungle Trekking

Doi Suthep Doi Pui National Park is a fantastic forest with lots of great trails. It is ideal for jungle trekking and forest bathing. On both our tours you will spend considerable time in the forest. Also here we usually don’t meet other trekkers. If you are interested in learning about tropical forests and forest restoration you have to join one of these tours. FORRU , the Forest Restoration Research Unit of Chiang Mai University, has worked with the Hmong village Ban Mae Sa Mai on the restoration of forest plots around the village. You will pass through these and witness how damaged tropical forest can be “rejuvenated”. FORRU has a small tree nursery near the village as well.

Chiang Mai Hikes: Four Easy Jungle Treks with Great Views

chiang mai jungle tour

One of the many reasons to visit Chiang Mai is its prime location near lush mountain ranges and several national parks. The area offers endless opportunities for trekking in the jungle and exploring the nearby mountains .

Many of these trails lead to spectacular temples or monasteries. Some pass by pools or hidden waterfalls where you can take a quick dip. Others lead to villages that are populated by the local hill tribes where you can buy lunch or a souvenir.

For those looking for an immersive experience deep in the jungle, it’s probably best to hire a tour guide. There are many options available from nature walks to multi-day trekking tours that typically include a homestay at a local village.

Orange ribbons mark the path for the Monk’s Trail

If you’re planning a less ambitious hike nearer the city, however, you may be able to hike without a guide .

The following Chiang Mai hikes are good ones if you’re looking for something easy that doesn’t necessarily require a guide to arrange your trip for you. I hiked all of these trails during a trip to Chiang Mai in January 2022 (although I did have a guide along on two of them).

Please note: there are a few hikes at National Parks which require you to hire a member of the local hill tribe to accompany you. Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail is one of those hikes. Keep reading for more details about that experience below.

How to Prepare for Hiking in Chiang Mai

While some of the Chiang Mai hikes described in this guide have facilities and restaurants nearby, not all of them do.

Be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks on your hiking trip along with insect repellent and sunscreen. Also bring clothing to cover your knees and shoulders in case you happen to visit a temple or shrine along the way.

Check the weather forecast and make sure you’re prepared for the weather conditions. The trail can become muddy and slippery during (or after) rainfall so wear shoes with good traction. Bring layers as the top of these mountains can be chilly (especially Doi Inthanon and Doi Pui).

Learn how to pee outside properly before heading out in case the urge strikes away from a bathroom. Be sure to leave no trace of your visit behind.

Hiking Gear

Here are a few of my favorite pieces of gear for day hikes. This is not a complete list, but it will get you started.

  • Hiking Shoes – Sturdy hiking shoes are important. I’m a big fan of Altra Lone Peak Trail Running Shoes and pair them with Dirty Girl Gaiters to keep rocks from getting into my shoes.
  • Socks – Good thick socks are key. I usually wear a pair of double-walled Wrightsock Coomesh II socks with my Altras.
  • Hiking Poles  – Hiking poles reduce pressure on your joints and help maintain your balance if you trip. My current favorites are the  LEKI Micro Vario Carbon Trekking Poles .
  • Sun Hat  – Protect your face (and scalp) with a broad sun hat.  This sun hat  is great because it has a wide brim and no back so it doesn’t bump into my backpack.
  • Sun Shirt  – Protect your neck and arms from the sun with a long-sleeved sun shirt. The  Columbia Tamiami II  is highly rated and comes with built-in UPF 40 sun protection.
  • Sunscreen – Apply sunscreen before hitting the trail and bring some along in case you need to reapply. I like these  Banana Boat 1-oz tubes of sunscreen  because they are super tiny and hardly take up any room in my bag.
  • Camera  – I love taking photos and always bring a camera along on my hiking trips. I use the  Canon PowerShot G7X Mark III  because it is lightweight yet has many advanced features.

While you can hike year-round in Chiang Mai, there are a few distinct seasons to be aware of.

The best time to hike is typically in the dry season which typically lasts from October to March. Temperatures are coolest during this time and the trails are usually not slippery and muddy.

Be aware that air quality tends to get poorer as the dry season progresses. Things take a turn for the worse during burning season , which typically takes place in late February/early March. During this time farmers burn their fields to ready them for new crops and air quality is low.

The hot season takes place from April to June. Temperatures soar during these months so take care not to hike during the middle of the day. Some national parks close during hot season, so check before you go.

Rainy season (or monsoon season ) takes place from July to September. Some trails are too muddy and slippery to hike on during this time, but not all. Most hikers avoid monsoon season, but some prefer it because visibility is better due to improved air quality.

No matter which season you choose, the best time of day to hike is usually in the early morning or late afternoon hours. Avoid hiking during the middle of the day when the temperatures are hottest.

Maps and Navigation

Whenever hiking a new trail, always bring along a map and know how to use it (or bring a guide).

If you plan to use your phone for navigation, download hiking routes in advance as you may not have cell reception after arrival. Be sure to bring along a portable battery charger (such as this one ) in case your phone dies on the trail.

This map shows you where to find the trailheads for each hike mentioned in the article below.

Four Easy Chiang Mai Hikes

Now that we’ve gotten all the preliminaries out of the way, it’s time for the good stuff!

Here are four easy Chiang Mai hikes that you won’t want to miss, with or without a guide!

Monk’s Trail to Wat Pha Lat

chiang mai jungle tour

Wat Pha Lat

Distance: 2.9 km (1.8 miles) to Wat Pha Lat Temple and back Elevation Gain: 187 m (614 feet) Highest Point of Elevation: 635 m (2084 feet) Difficulty Level:  Easy Cost: Free (donations are accepted at the temple) Trailhead: Monk’s Trail Trailhead

One of the most popular and well-known Chiang Mai hikes, the Monk’s Trail leads to a hidden jungle temple on Doi Suthep Mountain. The hike follows a stream uphill through the jungle, passing a few small waterfalls along the way.

After 1.5 km, the trail crosses over a footbridge and emerges at Wat Pha Lat Temple – a gorgeous temple nestled in the jungle along a waterfall. The temple doesn’t get many visitors and is primarily used as a meditation retreat center by the monks.

Before crossing the stream, be sure to take in the views of the temple from the other side. This is the best spot to see the temple’s Naga staircase (naga are mythical beings which look like serpents). There are also great views of Chiang Mai city from the stream.

chiang mai jungle tour

Naga staircase at Wat Pha Lat

Then you can proceed across the waterfall and wander among the meditation retreat center. Many of these buildings are constructed in harmony with nature in such a way that it’s difficult to tell where the buildings end and the forest begins.

Pro Tip: for more of a challenge, you can extend your hike and continue up the mountain to Doi Suthep temple . Be aware that this trail is much steeper and more challenging. More details are available in my Monk’s Trail to Wat Pha Lat hiking guide .

Monk’s Trail Map and Trailhead

How to reach the trailhead: the trailhead is located at the base of Doi Suthep Mountain a few kilometers away from Chiang Mai University. I used the Grab App to book a ride to the trailhead because I planned to hike all the way to the top of Doi Suthep and take a songthaew (shared taxi) back down again.

There is limited parking at the trailhead, so if parking is full consider parking at Basecamp Trail Café and walking to the trailhead (it’s a bit of a walk).

Doi Pui Peak Nature Trail

chiang mai jungle tour

At the viewpoint on Doi Pui Peak Nature Trail

Distance: 2.3 km (1.5 miles) loop, plus an extra 1.2 km (.8 miles) to the viewpoint and back Elevation Gain: 182 m (597 feet) Highest Point of Elevation: 1685 m (5528 feet) Difficulty Level:  Easy Cost: Free Trailhead: Doi Pui Peak Trailhead  at the Pui Campground

Doi Pui Peak is a short but steep nature trail that loops through the evergreen and pine forests on the top of Doi Pui mountain . The trail features informative signboards at 13 stations along the way with details about the park’s flora and fauna.

The highlight of the trail is Doi Pui Peak. At 1685 meters (5528 feet), it is the tallest point on the entire mountain. There isn’t much of a view to speak of from here, however.

For the best views, continue along the trail past the Royal Pavilion for .6 km (or .4 miles) until you reach a ridge. There are plenty of spots with great views along the ridge, along with a bench and some nice places to relax and enjoy the forest.

Pro Tip: after walking along the ridge, you can continue downhill to the Ban Khun  Chang Khian hill tribe village. That’s what I did when I hiked the trail, but I had a guide along to show me the way. We were there in January and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom throughout the village.

Dui Peak Nature Trail viewpoint

Doi Pui Peak Nature Trail Map and Trailhead

How to reach the trailhead: the trailhead is located at Doi Pui Peak campground and ranger station. There is plenty of parking here as this is a popular area inside Doi Pui Peak National Park.

The road to reach the trailhead is long and winding and only a single lane for the last few kilometers. You have to sound a horn any time you go around a corner to ensure you don’t hit another car. I don’t recommend driving it on a scooter unless you’re an experienced scooter driver.

To reach this trail without a car, I suggest hiring a private driver or tour guide (that’s what I did). You may also be able to arrange a ride from Doi Suthep temple, a popular tourist destination further down the mountain.

Huay Tung Tao to Dtaat Mook Waterfall

chiang mai jungle tour

Dtaat Mook Waterfall

Distance: 6.3 km (3.9 miles) there-and-back Elevation Gain: 325 m (1069 feet) Highest Point of Elevation: 614 m (2016 feet) Difficulty Level: Moderate Cost: 50 baht fee for foreigners to access the lake Trailhead: The Golden Buddha Statue at Huay Tung Tao Lake

Dtaat Mook waterfall is a lovely cascading waterfall that typically has water year-round. Reaching the waterfall requires a pleasant hike uphill through the jungle and a bamboo forest . This is the longest hike in this guide and the most difficult (although I would still only rate it as moderate).

The trailhead is located at Huay Tung Tao Lake , which is a gorgeous destination in its own right. There are many scenic bamboo huts overlooking the lake and restaurants specializing in seafood. The lake is a popular destination on the weekends for families.

There are a lot of trails above the lake and it’s easy to take the wrong one. Some of the trails are overgrown and hard to follow. Be sure to download a map (or several) to your phone before starting out.

Pro tip: for more of a challenge, consider extending your hike by completing the Huay Tung Tao Circular Hike .

chiang mai jungle tour

Hiking the trail to Dtaat Mook waterfall

Dtaat Mook Waterfall Map and Trailhead

How to reach the trailhead: the trailhead is located near the golden buddha statue on Huay Hung Tao lake. There is plenty of parking here, or you can take a Grab car (that’s what I did).

While there is a map on AllTrails for the Dtaat Mook Waterfall hike , I don’t recommend it. That route does not follow the best path to the waterfall.

I suggest using the below map for the Huay Tung Tao Circular hike instead . This hike also goes to the Dtaat Mook Waterfall but via a better path. Simply turn around after reaching the waterfall rather than continuing on to complete the entire loop.

Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail in Doi Inthanon National Park

chiang mai jungle tour

Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail Viewpoint

Distance: 3.4 km (2.1 miles) loop Elevation Gain: 190 m (623 feet) Highest Point of Elevation: 2311 m (7584 feet) Difficulty Level: Easy Cost: 300 baht per person entrance fee (for foreigners), plus 200 baht to hire a guide Trailhead: Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail trailhead

Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail is a short ramble through the woods on Thailand’s tallest mountain , Doi Inthanon. The loop hike follows a picturesque stream before eventually breaking out of the foliage to a viewpoint.

While a bit further away from Chiang Mai than the other hikes on this list, the trail deserves a spot on your bucket list as it is undeniably one of the best Chiang Mai hikes . The views from the top are *epic*.

chiang mai jungle tour

Hiking on Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail

On the return hike, the trail passes by a viewpoint of the Twin Pagodas before dipping back into the woods and returning to the trailhead.

Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail is somewhat unique in that hiring a local guide is mandatory . The guides are all members of the local Hmong tribe and ensure that visitors stay on the correct path. You can hire one on the spot after your arrival for 200 baht.

Note: the trail is available from November to April every year. The hike is not suitable for people who cannot handle stairs as there are quite a few.

Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail Map and Trailhead

How to reach the trailhead: the trailhead is located near the top of Doi Inthanon peak in Doi Inthanon National park, a 2-hour drive southwest of Chiang Mai. It’s a long drive up a steep winding mountain road.

The best way to reach the trailhead from Chiang Mai is by driving your own car or arranging for a private driver or tour guide. That’s what we did and honestly it was worth it for us since we didn’t have to worry about any transportation details. He paid the entrance fee to the park and arranged for hiring the local Hmong tour guide.

My brother visited Chiang Mai some years ago and loved it. Naturally enough, I’m tempted to follow in his footsteps. He didn’t do any trails but your excellent guide will make my visit so much easier. The Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail looks lovely. Thanks for sharing.

Day 1 Mae Wang and Karen Village

In the morning we drive to Mae Wang, south of Chiang Mai and make a stop at a local market and from here you go on a trek through the mountains to visit hill tribe villages. The first stop is a Shan village where we have lunch. After lunch, you walk through dense forest, open areas, plantations owned by mountain people and sometimes along or through rivers. At the end of the afternoon, you will arrive in a Karen mountain village where you spend the night in one of their houses and experience their lifestyle and food, an experience to never forget.

Day 2 Hiking and Rafting

Your night’s rest will be a lot less than you are used to because of the primitive way of sleeping and all the sounds of the village around you, such as crowing cocks and roaring pigs. Not something you experience every day. After breakfast, we continue on our route to the meeting point where our car will pick us up to bring us to the starting point of the raft trip. The rafts are made from bamboo, by connecting long bamboo sticks to each other. You will descend the river at a relaxing pace, enjoying the natural surroundings and beautiful mountain views to the point where our truck is waiting to transport us back to Chiang Mai. Here your tour ends.

Elephant Jungle Expedition

Chiang mai's best outdoor adventure, connect with elephants while supporting their conservation, 1 day private trip 3500 thb per person, waterfalls + elephants care + rafting + hiking 8:00-17:00.

A woman caressing an elephant

This trip combines our guest’s favourite activities into an unforgettable 1 day adventure. You will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bond with elephants by spending one-on-one time with them in this private tour.

Half of the day is spent caring for elephants, learning to communicate with them and swimming with them in the Mae Wang river. You will learn the elephants unique personalities and play with a baby elephant and their mom. Walk with elephants as they forage in their beautiful natural environment.

After befriending the elephant herd, enjoy a fresh Thai style picnic at a waterfall. Then take in beautiful landscapes on a hike through sun-soaked rice fields and lush jungle.

Your guide can lead you to discover hidden jungle temples or several waterfalls where you can learn about plants and medicine.  The hike is fun and refreshing and the highlight is bathing in the cool waterfalls. This will be a day unlike any other!  This is our most popular tour so please reserve in advance to get a spot.

Travel Better: 100% of the proceeds from this tour benefit rescued elephants and ensure they can continue to live the rest of their lives in a sanctuary free from fear and abuse.

hiking in rice field

This trip includes pick up in downtown Chiang Mai  Please note that pick up locations outside of Chiang Mai are possible but may have an additional charge.

This tour also includes visiting a beautiful Karen Hill Tribe village where guests will have the opportunity to explore the traditional Karen way of life. See traditional Karen houses, and learn  from your local Karen guide how indigenous people raise animals, plant crops, and enjoy their rural lifestyle. There are local artisans in each village, so this can also be a place to grab a one-of-a-kind souvenir from a local craftswoman.

The length and difficulty of the hike can be adjusted to fit your ability, just let us know! On average our guests prefer to hike 2-3 hours through lush jungle terrain. Along the way you will see a wide variety of animals and plants, and your guide will share their expert jungle knowledge as you  take in the epic beauty of Northern Thailand.

Hike to a secluded jungle waterfall where you can cool off by taking a dip! This is the perfect way to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings in the jungle.

Arrive at an authentic elephant jungle sanctuary! Feed all the elephants in the herd, swim and play in the river, learn how to make elephant medicine and enrichment activities for the elephants and meet a baby elephant. You will plenty of time for photos, and learning how to communicate with them.  Walk with your elephant through the jungle to forage and then cool off together by bathing them in the river!

We offer only ethical elephant tours. The elephants we love and support are trained each day through positive reinforcement, helping them learn to respond to voice commands. Managing them responsibly helps us ensure these elephants can safely receive veterinary care because they trust the humans around them

This tour offers a delicious picnic lunch in the lush Chiang Mai jungle. Enjoy a traditional vegetarian meal and fresh seasonal fruits as you look out onto the babbling Mae Wang river. Please let us know beforehand if you have any dietary restrictions so we can accommodate.

Glide down the lazy Mae Wang River on a traditional bamboo raft! Bamboo floats! And make for an ingenious and totally eco mode of transportation. A guide from the Lahu hill tribe community will use a bamboo paddle to steer you around the winding Mae Wang river on this handmade bamboo raft. Depending on the seasonal height of the river, rides can be from 40 min to 1 hour in duration. While most areas of the river are very shallow, life jackets are available upon request.
