A Perth Swan River cruise is one of our favourite things to do when we have visitors as it’s a leisurely way to see some of Perth’s top sights from the water. As you depart the city center, you can admire Perth riverfront attractions like the Bell Tower and Kings Park, and glide past pretty suburbs to reach Fremantle, located where the river meets the Indian Ocean.

There’s the option to take the cruise one way, letting you explore Fremantle in your own time, or book a return ticket.

The Swan River is highly important to the Noongar people as, in dreamtime, the river was made by the Waugal rainbow serpent.

Swan River Cruise Departure Point

The Swan River Cruise from Perth to Fremantle leaves from Barrack Street Jetty, in Elizabeth Quay . This jetty is 400m from the Elizabeth Quay train station and bus port.

The free Blue Cat drops off you off at Barrack Square and the ferry leaves from Mends Street Jetty in South Perth to Elizabeth Quay.

Swan River Cruise Perth to Fremantle

As you leave from Barrack Street jetty, you will have a wonderful view of the Bell Tower and Elizabeth Quay as you head out. South Perth is on the opposite side of the Swan River and where you will find Perth Zoo.

As you pass under the Narrows Bridge, which allows the freeway to cross the river, you can see Kings Park , one of the cities main attractions. The freeway continues to run alongside the river on the left, while Mounts Bay Road is on the right. This is where you will see The Old Swan Brewery, now apartments, commercial space, and a restaurant, which dates back to 1879. Dave’s grandad worked there, starting his job for Swan Brewery in February 1950. The brewery moved from these premises in 1966 and the building was redeveloped as a commercial precinct. The Traditional Landowners protested due to the site’s ancient and sacred Aboriginal heritage, but the claims were refused.

Keep a look out for the Eliza Sculpture and the famous Blue Boat House, the Crawley Boatshed. Have a look closely at Eliza as she is often seen wearing various outfits. No one is sure who dresses her but she has worn an assortment of clothes including cocktail dresses, Halloween costumes, Christmas outfits, and school uniforms.

Further along, also on the right, is the University of Western Australia, a world top100 university. This university, opened in 1913, it started with 184 students and now has more than 25,000 students enrolled from 100 countries.

Matilda Bay restaurant, Matilda Bay Reserve and Mounts Bay Sailing Club are further on. Matilda Bay restaurant is a lovely place for lunch or dinner overlooking the Swan River with the Perth city skyline in the background. Our favourite is dinner as there’s something special about seeing the city lights while dining on fresh fish alongside a bottle of Pierro Chardonnay. Matilda Reserve is a beautiful picnic spot, so for a cheaper option, grab some food and head here for amazing views.

Past the point is Nedlands, location of the Nedlands Yacht Club and The Perth Flying Squadrum Yacht Club. Opposite is the riverside suburb of Applecross.

From here onwards, you will be in awe of the luxury homes that front onto the river, some with a private jetty. Perth’s most expensive suburb is here, Dalkeith, with the median house price in May 2021 of A$2.56 million. Although Mosman Park, further along the river, broke the record in 2009 for Australia’s most expensive house, bought by Mineral Resources founder Chris Ellison for A$57.5 million. It still remains Perth’s most expensive home.

As you approach Point Walter, you will see the sand bar, or the spit as us locals call it. The river narrows here between Chidley Point and Blackwall Reach, where you can see the 8m limestone Blackwall Reach Cliffs. This is the deepest part of the Swan River and a popular place for cliff jumping, but people have died doing this, so a sign has now been erected to warn against it. If you want a close up view, consider a Cliffs and Caves Kayak Tour like this one that goes from East Fremantle into Bicton Bay and then along the cliff face.

Point Walter was previously known as Dyoondalup, meaning “place of white sand” and the Blackwall Reach area was known as Jennalup, “place of feet”. This area was traditionally a place for Aboriginal women and children.

As you near the end of the river, you pass East Fremantle with yacht clubs and The Left Bank, a popular “Sunday session” pub. The cruise boat docks at Victoria Quay, where you can easily walk into town or catch one of the free CAT buses .

Once you finished exploring Fremantle, you can take the train back into Perth.

Special family day Review of Fremantle Lunch Cruise Pending review We had a wonderful day as a catch-up with sibling family, some who had travelled from interstate for celebration of a milestone birthday. The crew were fantastic, friendly & helpful. The weather was superb, so the river was stunning! The buffet lunch covered a range of tastes. It was great having cold & hot options as well as a variety of salads. The variety was such that a separate vegetarian meal was not necessary. Captains commentary was interesting, views along the river awesome. Love that the crew acknowledged birthdays & sang happy birthday as well as taking photos for us and other groups.. We opted for the alternative cruise which was running on the same day as our cancelled trip. Good points.. Crew were entertaining and very helpful. Wine tasting on board was nice with cheese and biscuits Wine tasting at winery well organised and good Chocolate stop was ok Trip back on river was very pleasant with free flow wine Not so good points… Drinking water on boat was vile -sorry to be brutal but chemical city and undrinkable with no option to buy bottled water.. Lunch was pre ordered and very basic menu ( burgers salad pizza). Sadly several lunches were served 25 mins after everyone else.. Mini bus was mini! If you’ve got a bit of a girth ( I have!) it was quite tight to pass up and down the aisle. Bus driver was very good though and she drove us very nicely. All in all the day was ok but quite expensive for a river trip with burger and chips or pizza. I think the gourmet meal at sandlefords winery would have been much better but we didn’t get that opportunity. Read more Written March 24, 2024

The Swan River flows through the heart of Perth and offers stunning views of the city skyline, the lush greenery of Kings Park and Botanic Garden, and other landmarks along its banks. Not only is it a beautiful part of the city, but you’ll also be able to learn a lot about the history, culture and natural beauty of the region. What can I expect on a Perth cruise?

Perth cruises are known for offering stunning views of the city skyline and its surroundings, as well as a variety of onboard experiences. If you can’t go past great water views, Perth cruises deliver breathtaking views of the city, river, and surrounding landscapes. Take in the stunning city skyline, see the lush greenery of Kings Park and Botanic Garden, and observe local wildlife along the riverbanks. If you’re a foodie and want a more luxurious option, join a Perth dinner cruise and enjoy a meal while taking in some scenic views from the water. Some Perth cruises also offer wine-tasting experiences, where you can sample some of the finest wines produced in the region while enjoying the picturesque surroundings of the river. No matter what your preferences are, you’ll find plenty of memorable Perth cruises. Whether you’re there for a history lesson, the views, or the wildlife, a river cruise in Perth is a unique and enjoyable way to explore the city and its surrounding areas.

How much does a Perth cruise cost?

At RedBalloon, the price of a river cruise in Perth varies depending on the type of cruise and its duration. Prices can start from around $30 per person for a one-hour sightseeing cruise, while a lunch or dinner cruise can cost between $120 to $190 per person. A wine-tasting cruise can range from around $89 to $195 per person, depending on the inclusions and quality of wine offered. It’s important to note that prices may vary depending on the specific operator and the time of year.

Where do Perth cruises leave from?

Perth cruises leave from various locations along the Swan River, depending on which cruise you book. Some popular departure points include Barrack Street Jetty, Fremantle, Perth Zoo, and Claisebrook Cove. Be sure to check with your cruise operator beforehand to confirm where the cruise will be leaving from.

What should I wear on a Perth dining cruise?

A general rule of thumb when it comes to dressing for a Perth dinner cruise is to avoid being too formal or too casual. We’d recommend sticking to smart casual and wearing comfortable footwear. Since dinner cruises go into the night and you may be partially outdoors, bring a jacket to throw on in the evening. Weather can also change throughout the night, so layering up is always a good idea.

Boat cruises in Perth are a wonderful way to spend the day or evening. However, if you find yourself in another city, there are plenty of stunning cruises that you can embark on around Australia. Whether it’s a scenic or a dinner cruise, there are many options that are bound to tickle your fancy.
