  • Can I trade my tickets for a different date/time?
  • No, all tickets are nonrefundable and nonexchangeable.
  • Do you cruise rain or shine?
  • Yes, we cruise rain or shine. All the boats have two levels – the top deck is open-air, and the lower deck is an enclosed, climate-controlled salon. Each salon is surrounded by large windows so you can stay comfortable while still taking in the magnificent views. Tour commentary is broadcast over speakers on both levels.
  • Are the boats wheelchair accessible?

Chicago's Leading Lady, Chicago’s Classic Lady, and Chicago's Emerald Lady are wheelchair-accessible. These vessels cruise at the 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 5pm departure times. We used to live in Chicago and went back to show the city to our teenage children. The architectural boat tour was a great start to introduce them to the architectural landscape and history of our beloved city. […] The captain of the boat was a lot of fun and our tour guide was very knowledgeable. I studied the architecture of Chicago in college and she knew her facts.

We had a great informational time on the tour. So many buildings, so little time! Even at 90 minutes the tour seemed to fly by. Our guide, Sean, did a great job keeping the same pace as the boat describing each building in great detail, builders, architects, year, styles, and revisions.

Absolutely terrific river tour of Chicago’s architecture. When the other architectural tours were full, we defaulted to this one. HOME RUN! Billy was a wonderful guide. Obviously comfortable in front of a crowd, and his spontaneity kept us entertained throughout.

Donamarie S.

I have wanted to book this boat tour for years! I had family in town from England as well as out of state so I figured this would be perfect for everyone to see as much as possible with such a big group. It was perfect! We had so much fun!

Fun experience! The tour guide and captain of the ship were funny and engaging. The views is spectacular. I was born and raised in Chicago, but seeing it from the river at sunset was just spectacular. The route that was taken was incredibly scenic and I got some awesome shots of the city.

7 things that might surprise you about the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour

T here are plenty of ways to take in the sights, sounds (and smells) of Chicago, but you don't necessarily have to be on land to do that.

And you don't have to be a tourist, either.

In fact, one of the most beloved ways — among locals and visitors alike — to experience city is by journeying across the Chicago River and Lake Michigan while a tour guide talks about buildings and regales you on the untold story of Mrs. O'Leary's cow.

In other words: a Chicago Architecture Boat Tour.

"As you're going up and down the Chicago River and on Lake Michigan, you're seeing the city’s evolving architecture, which is changing every year" said Andrew Sargis, director of sales and marketing for Wendella Tours and Cruises .

Wendella, billed as Chicago's "original" architecture tour, in 1935 gave its first architecture tour of the city from a wooden diesel yacht out on Navy Pier, Sargis said. Now, upwards of 20 architecture tours are offered daily, with more on the weekends. On average, Wendella tours see roughly 100,000 passengers each month over the summer, Sargis said.

And though the majority of guests on any given Wendella architecture tour are tourists, Sargis said, locals take them, too.

MORE: Even Chicagoans can't get enough of this tourist attraction: ‘It's about the only touristy thing I do'

"I was surprised when I first started, we get a lot of repeat locals," Bobby Scheffle, a Wendella tour guide told NBC Chicago. "And always there's a lot of local people that come on when they have guests visiting them in town. They like to show off the city this way."

But there's something else about the experience that makes it so very Chicago.

"I think it is really unique to experience the city from a boat on a river, because we think about other big cities in the United States -- there aren't many that have a river that go right through downtown," Scheffle said. "You feel like you're in the city, you hear the noise, and you see the buildings and all that."

Whether you're taking the ride for the first time or the 50th, bringing out-of-town guests out for a memorable activity or just itching to be a tourist in your own city, here are seven things to know about the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour.

Will weather stop a tour from running?

Wendella's architecture tours run year-round, Sargis said, although "weather is a factor."

Weather events like ice on the river or significant snowfall can impact operations, Sargis said, but they typically don't, since the Chicago River -- a federal waterway -- must remain navigable year-round.

While Wendella's boats do have climate-controlled indoor lounges, tours during the winter may run at limited times. But rain, snow, extreme heat or wind, unflappable Chicagoans still show up.

"We went on drizzly day a few years ago," Kathy Rambo wrote on NBC Chicago's Facebook page. "There were only about 10 of us on the boat!

And most often, the tour will run — rain or shine — so don't hesitate to bring a raincoat.

"I have certainly [given tours] under thunderstorms and downpours, and I've gotten drenched sometimes," Scheffle said. "I've never had a tour get canceled because no one bought a ticket. There's always someone wanting to come out here in the rain or the cold."

What's the best time of year (or day) to go?

It depends on when exactly your favorite time of the year is, and what you're hoping to see.

For Sargis, it's late summer. "There's this point of time in September when the weather is beautiful, but there's not that summer rush."

There are other times that Chicagoans may want to consider, too.

"St. Patrick's Day Celebration when they dye the river, and any Wednesday or Saturday night [over the summer], watching the fireworks over Lake Michigan , especially if you're local" Sargis said.

During the summer months, Wendella's tours run start as early as 9 a.m., with the day's final tour not ending until 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., Scheffle said, "so if you want to come for a ride to see the city lights, you can come late, and it's also beautiful, just a little more difficult to see the colors on the buildings if that's what you want to see."

Laura Pubins, who lives in a suburb outside of Chicago, agrees.

"My favorite one was when we were on a boat at sunset," Pubins wrote to NBC Chicago on Facebook. "It was an awesome new view of the city."

What's the most photogenic spot on the tour?

For Sargis, it's "anything out on Lake Michigan," with the skyline in the background.

On the river though, there's one moment that captures the city best, Scheffle said, no matter what time of day you're taking the trip.

"The best place to take a photo on the 90-minute river tour is when we come up the south branch from Chinatown," Scheffle said. "That's the best place because you get the whole skyline from the south. It's really beautiful."

For locals though, it may not be what you're looking at, so much as how you're looking at it.

"You're looking at [the city] from underneath," said Chicago resident Nick Pappas, 55, who recently found himself on a 90-minute river tour. "It's just a different perspective on the river that you don't get on the street level. As amazing as that sounds, you're only, like, 20 feet down, but it gives you a whole different perspective."

What does the training for a tour guide look like?

According to Sargis, all Wendella tour guides are trained in-house -- and the spots are competitive.

"There's high demand," Sargis said, of the position. "There are more people that want to be tour guides than space available. It's certainly a popular job, and people want to do it." While the tour guide of any given architecture tour isn't made public, many people do request certain ones for private events, Sargis said.

For the tours, there's a general script, with highlights that must be mentioned, Sargis said. But improvisation, along with sharing personal history is encouraged, too.

"All of the tour guides have their own experience in the city, and will add parts of their history in it," Sargis said. "We have a tour guide that is a retired police officer, and he will interject anecdotes form his career. We have a tour guide that's a Vietnam War Veteran, and when we go by the Vietnam War Memorial, he will always discuss the importance of it to him."

For Scheffle, the training included joining multiple tours a week for two weeks and flashcards.

"For a while, I, just drove Uber and Lyft," Scheffle said. "And then, I remembered that I really liked Chicago. I like learning fun facts about it. And there are people in the city that have that as a job -- to tell people fun facts about Chicago and I started looking into tourism jobs in the city."

What's the most common question tour guides get?

Believe it or not, it's not always about The Great Chicago Fire , or Mrs. O'Leary and her cow, at least on Scheffle's tours.

"My favorite thing on the tour that happens is probably when little kids ask questions," Scheffle said. "The common question that a kid will ask, because I talk about the tallest building, second tallest building, third tallest building, a lot of times a kid will ask what's the shortest building in Chicago? Which I don't have a good answer for."

Are you supposed to tip your guide?

"It's up to the discretion of the client," Sargis said. "I would say a lot of our passengers do tip our tour guides."

What's the absolute best part of the tour?

Sure the tour is photogenic, and the city's history is fascinating. And though some may go on the tour to find out what buildings are new, others prefer to think about the old.

"My favorite building to talk about is probably the Board of Trade building," Scheffle said. "Just because I remember walking by it much younger and always, I remember, really being impressed by it, thinking was such a cool big city building."

For a local on the tour, the memories are nice. But a day out on the water in Chicago is just hard to beat.

"It's great. I don't have to work," said Pappas, who has lived in the city for 55 years. "Every time, it's a little treat to go down the river."

Your guide to Chicago’s iconic architecture

Chicago’s stunning cityscape has been shaped by some of the biggest names in architecture — Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Jeanne Gang, Daniel Burnham, and beyond. No matter where you look, the city is full of architectural wonders, from soaring skyscrapers in the heart of downtown to historic landmarks in our vibrant neighborhoods.

If you’re looking to dive into Chicago architecture, explore our must-see sites and packed list of architecture events, tours, and cruises where you can learn the fascinating stories behind the buildings.

Art Deco: Maybe one of the most famous styles of architecture, Art Deco shines in Chicago’s downtown. Created in the exuberant optimism of the Roaring Twenties, Art Deco has come to represent opulence and glamour. One striking example is Chicago’s Carbide and Carbon Building, designed to look like a Champagne bottle and finished with real gold.

Notable examples: Carbide and Carbon Building, The Merchandise Mart, Chicago Board of Trade Building

Chicago School : After the Great Chicago Fire, the city began to rebuild at an extraordinary pace, leveraging the latest techniques and technology to take the city’s architecture to new heights that were previously unimaginable. Legendary architects like Burnham and Root, William Le Baron Jenney, and Louis Sullivan finished these structures with decorative elements and delicate details, making Chicago School instantly recognizable.

Notable examples: Reliance Building, Monadnock Building, Sullivan Center

International Style : The International Style is a type of modern architecture born after World War II, known for its steel-and-glass exteriors, minimal (if any) ornamentation, and open interiors. Perhaps no one did it better than Mies van der Rohe, who crafted many important Chicago buildings (the city has more of his designs than any other).

Notable examples: One Illinois Center, 330 N. Wabash

Mid-Century Modernism : This distinctive style comprises many of the Chicago skyline’s most instantly recognizable buildings. Mid-Century Modern takes the technical precision of the International Style and experiments with new materials like concrete and more sculptural, organic forms (like the iconic Marina City corn cobs).

Notable examples: 875 N. Michigan Ave., Willis Tower, Marina City

Postmodernism : Some of the city’s most eye-catching buildings are those that follow the Postmodern style. While the International style adheres to clean lines and minimal decoration, Postmodernism is all about being creative, eclectic, and sometimes a little quirky. Think curved forms, asymmetry, bright colors, and generally breaking with tradition.

Notable examples: James R. Thompson Center, Harold Washington Library, 333 West Wacker Drive

Other architectural styles represented in Chicago include Deconstructivism (Pritzker Pavilion), Gothic Revival (Tribune Tower, Chicago Water Tower), Spanish Colonial Revival (Wrigley Building), and more.

The city’s neighborhoods are also filled with the city’s distinctive styles of residential architecture: bungalows, worker’s cottages, greystones, and more. See for yourself in our neighborhood historic districts . You’ll also find plenty of examples of Frank Lloyd Wright ‘s Prairie style throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

Open House Chicago : Have you ever walked by an interesting Chicago building and wished you could take a peek inside? You’ll get your chance during Chicago’s annual Open House Chicago, a free festival hosted by the Chicago Architecture Center each October.

More than 100 significant buildings open their doors for the public to explore. Sites range from soaring skyscrapers to opulent mansions and exclusive private clubs, many of which are rarely open to the public.

Chicago Architecture Biennial : Explore the past, present, and future of architecture at the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The free event, which happens every other year, takes over the Chicago Cultural Center and other sites around the city with events and exhibits. Each exhibition is developed by a new group of curators from a variety of art and design disciplines and features new themes and collaborators from around the world.

City Cruises : City Cruises offers a variety of architecture tours, including elegant brunch cruises on a glass-enclosed river boat.

Mercury, Chicago’s Skyline Cruiseline : Admire epic skyline views from the river and lakefront, while enjoying narration about the city’s history.

Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise : Expert docents share the fascinating stories behind more than 50 buildings along the Chicago River from aboard Chicago’s First Lady.

Wendella Tours & Cruises : Billed as Chicago’s original architecture tour, Wendella offers tours of the city’s waterfront buildings on the Chicago River and Lake Michigan.

Shoreline Sightseeing : Gaze skywards as you sail past dozens of Chicago landmarks along the Chicago River on this engaging architecture tour.

Chicago Architecture Center

Chicago Architecture Center tours : Explore the city on foot, on the train, or on a bus — all with a highly trained docent as your guide. Choose from tours that explore must-see sites and Chicago icons or head into the neighborhoods to uncover hidden gems.

Inside Chicago Walking Tours : This locally owned tour company specializes in architectural interiors, so you can step inside some of the city’s most famous buildings. Tours explore the downtown Loop, Art Deco masterpieces, and even allegedly haunted spots.

Tours With Mike : You can take Mike’s Architecture’s Greatest Hits tour. Or you can take his irreverent Ugly Buildings tour, a unique experience that shares the untold stories of some of the city’s lesser known, but no less interesting, structures.

L Stop Tours : A family-owned company, L Stop Tours offers walking tours incorporating the city’s ‘L’ trains for a unique local perspective. Their tour of the Loop focuses on the area’s one–of–a–kind architecture, from the spectacular lobby of The Rookery to soaring skyscrapers.

A Review of Wendella’s Architecture Boat Tour in Chicago

Lauren

  • November 20, 2023
  • Updated December 12, 2023
  • In Illinois

Are you thinking about taking an architecture boat tour in Chicago?

If you ask anyone what to do when visiting Chicago, an architectural boat tour on the Chicago River is always highly recommended.

A boat tour is an easy way to see a large chunk of Chicago in a short amount of time. Plus, you get the added bonus of learning about Chicago’s history, like the Great Fire and the World’s Fair, and how it impacted Chicago’s landscape and skyline.

We took a boat tour with Wendella when we visited Chicago. We enjoyed the guide’s humor and her extensive knowledge about the city, buildings, and architects.

You have many options when it comes to Chicago River boat tours. However, we love that Wendella offers both 45 and 90-minute tours. And they are the only boat tour company that is open year-round!

The review below shares more about what to expect on a Chicago architecture tour with Wendella. Let’s dive in!

Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, we may receive a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

What to Expect on a Chicago River Tour

A Chicago architecture boat tour is one of the best ways to learn about the city’s history while also seeing a large chunk of the city in a short amount of time. It’s a great option if you only have one day in Chicago . But we think it’s worth doing no matter how much time you spend in the Windy City!

view of window washers on the Salesforce tower from the Wendella Chicago architecture boat tour

On a Wendella boat tour , the guides narrate the tour, sharing funny jokes and interesting stories about famous landmarks like the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), Tribune Tower , and the Wrigley Building .

The tour offers a fascinating look into the city’s evolution, from the Great Fire of 1871 that spurred innovative architectural rebirth to the groundbreaking designs that define Chicago’s skyline today.

Wendella Architecture Tour: A Review

chicago architecture boat tour parking

Tour Options

Wendella offers several different tour options to suit your time constraints and interests.

Their  45-minute Chicago River Architecture Tour  provides a short yet comprehensive tour of the city’s skyline. It shares interesting facts about the various buildings along the Chicago River (and others nearby) while sharing information about the city’s history, including the World’s Fair and the Great Fire.

Wendella also offers two 90-minute tours.  The 90-minute   Chicago River Architecture Tour  is a more extended version of the 45-minute tour, giving guests a more comprehensive tour that navigates all three branches of the Chicago River. This is the most popular tour for good reason.

Wendella’s Lake and River Architecture Tour   is their original tour offering. It not only takes you on the Chicago River but also Lake Michigan. You’ll get to enjoy and learn about Chicago’s skyline as seen from the Chicago River. Then, you’ll go through the Chicago Lock and float out onto Lake Michigan for the best view of the city.

Prices for the Wendella Chicago Boat Tour

How much a Wendella architectural boat tour costs depends on the tour you take. These are the prices as of publication:

  • The  45-minute archi t ecture tour  costs $12 for kids ages 4-12 and $27 for anyone 13 and up. Children under 4 are FREE but still require a ticket.
  • Both  90-minute tours  cost $19 for kids ages 4-12 and $42 for anyone over 12. Children ages three and under are FREE, but still, you need to reserve them a ticket.

Amenities on Board a Wendella Boat Tour

Plenty of amenities are   available to you during your architectural river tour on Wendella.

Let’s get the most critical amenity out of the way first. Yes, there are  restrooms on board ! So, if you’re visiting Chicago with kids, you don’t have to worry about them needing to use the bathroom right after the boat leaves the dock.

people sitting on the top deck of the Wendella Boat Tours Chicago Architecture tour

If you get hungry or thirsty on board, there is a  full-service bar  serving soda, wine, local beer, and cocktails. They also have some  snacks  available for purchase.

Lastly, although we recommend sitting on the top deck for the best views of the city, the below deck is climate-controlled. So, if you’re visiting Chicago on a hot day or during the winter, you’ll be plenty comfortable on board.

Wendella Chicago River Tour Experience

You’ll have fun on a Wendella boat tour! Most people agree that the Wendella architecture tour is a  more relaxed experience  compared to other Chicago boat tours. The guides tell corny jokes (almost on par with the Jungle Cruise at Disney) while sharing exciting history and tidbits about the architecture in Chicago.

The  45-mi nute tour  will take you along the Chicago River, first heading west and south before turning around. You’ll get views of the buildings in the Loop, West Loop, and River North neighborhoods, as well as the Navy Pier.

View of Chicago skyline from the Wendella Boat tour near the Navy Pier

Wendella’s  90-minute architecture tour  follows a similar route as the 45-minute, except it heads further south on the Chicago River and explores some of the north branch.

If you opt for the  90-minute Lake and River tour , you’ll experience a shorter tour on the Chicago River, but then you’ll go through the Chicago Lock and enjoy the view of the skyline from the massive Lake Michigan.

This  map  on Wendella’s website gives you an idea of where you’ll be along the river and lake.

The boat tour on the Chicago River was very  smooth . No big waves to cause rocking of the boat. Of course, if you’re prone to motion sickness, you may want to take medication or wear a patch prior to boarding. We did not do the Lake and River tour, but it is probably rougher out on Lake Michigan than the river.

Fun Fact: There are almost two dozen bridges that cross the Chicago River in the downtown area, alone. You’ll go under several of them while you’re on your architectural boat tour!

Tips for Your Wendella Boat Ride

  • Arrive early:  They ask you to arrive 15-30 minutes before the tour to allow time to board. We arrived precisely 30 minutes before the tour started, and people were already in line. If you want a seat on the top deck, get there early.
  • Sit near a speaker or close to the guide:  The guides share so many interesting facts and silly jokes you don’t want to miss them because you can’t hear them. They use a microphone, but with the sounds of the city, the wind, and other passing boats, it can be hard to hear everything.
  • Dress warmer:  Unless it’s the middle of summer, you’ll probably be a little colder on the boat than you are walking around the city. Between the water and the breeze from the boat, it makes you feel colder, so bring a jacket in the fall and spring, and don’t forget a hat and scarf in the colder months.

Chicago architecture significance

Chicago’s architecture is renowned for several reasons. Firstly, the city played a pivotal role in the development of modern architecture, particularly with the emergence of the Chicago School in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

This influential movement introduced groundbreaking construction techniques, including the use of steel frames and the development of the skyscraper, which significantly impacted architectural practices worldwide.

Additionally, Chicago boasts a diverse array of architectural styles, ranging from historic landmarks such as the iconic Wrigley Building and the neoclassical Art Institute of Chicago to modern marvels like the sleek Willis Tower and the innovative Aqua Tower.

The city’s architectural landscape reflects a rich tapestry of design, showcasing the work of renowned architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, and Mies van der Rohe, among others.

Furthermore, Chicago’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage and fostering innovative urban design has solidified its status as a global architectural hub.

An architectural river cruise in Chicago will take you past a myriad of stunning buildings, each with its own unique history. My favorites are, of course, the Art Deco, Renaissance and Gothic styles. Here’s a list of some of the most beautiful and iconic structures you’ll see:

  • Tribune Tower : Home to the Chicago Tribune until recently, this neo-Gothic skyscraper is famous for its flying buttresses at the top and the collection of historic stones embedded in its exterior walls. Designed by Raymond M. Hood and John Mead Howells, it was the first-place winner in the Chicago Tribune’s architectural competition in 1922. It is my favorite of all the buildings in Chicago.
  • Wrigley Building : This glazed terra-cotta landmark was built in the early 1920s to house the corporate headquarters of the Wrigley Company, and is known for its distinctive clock tower and French Renaissance style. It is my second favorite building in Chicago and marks the beginning of the Magnificent Mile.
  • Marina City : Often referred to as the “corn cob” towers, these mixed-use residential/commercial buildings are a striking example of mid-century modern design and offer a unique view when seen from the river.
  • Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) : Once the tallest building in the world, this iconic skyscraper is known for its bundled-tube structure and the popular Skydeck , offering views from the 103rd floor.
  • Aqua Tower : With its undulating balconies mimicking rippling water, Aqua Tower is an example of contemporary design and stands out for its fluid aesthetic.
  • 333 West Wacker Drive : This office building is celebrated for its curved, reflective glass facade that beautifully mirrors the bend of the Chicago River.
  • The Merchandise Mart : Once the largest building in the world by floor space, this Art Deco landmark is a hub for design and commerce.
  • Chicago Cultural Center : Known for its stunning stained-glass domes, this neoclassical building serves as the city’s official reception venue.
  • 333 North Michigan : An Art Deco masterpiece, this building is noted for its setbacks and tower, which provide a sense of verticality and elegance.
  • Leo Burnett Building : With its dark, vertical facade, this building is a modern interpretation of art deco style and stands as a monument to the advertising icon Leo Burnett.
  • NBC Tower : Modeled after the Rockefeller Center in New York, this postmodern building features a flying buttress design and is home to several media outlets.
  • The Carbide & Carbon Building : This art deco gem is adorned with dark green terra cotta and gold leaf accents, designed to resemble a champagne bottle with gold foil at the top.

On a Chicago architecture river cruise , you’ll also have the opportunity to see numerous bridges, each with its own story and significance. Here are three of the most important ones:

  • DuSable Bridge (Michigan Avenue Bridge) : This iconic double-deck, double-leaf, trunnion bascule bridge serves as a grand gateway to the Magnificent Mile, one of the best areas to stay in Chicago . It was completed in 1920 and named in honor of Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, considered the founder of Chicago.
  • LaSalle Street Bridge : The LaSalle Street Bridge, with its distinct burgundy color and stately design, carries an air of old-world charm. The bridge’s ornamental railings and Beaux-Arts detailing on the bridge houses add to its classic beauty, making it a standout structure on the river.
  • Franklin-Orleans Street Bridge (Franklin Street Bridge) : Another classic example of Chicago’s many bascule bridges, the Franklin-Orleans Street Bridge was completed in 1920 right next to the Merchandise Mart. It was actually featured in the 2005 film Batman as the bridge that connects Gotham City with the Narrows.

chicago architecture boat tour parking

I knew I wanted to be able to pick my seat on the boat, so I headed to the meeting point on Michigan Avenue about 35 minutes before departure. It was easy to find the right spot, just look for the Shoreline Sightseeing sign at 401 N Michigan Ave. Located alongside Chicago’s Honored Pioneer Court (the right side of the photo above).

My cruise was the first of the day at 10:00 am, so the boat was already there when I arrived. I was the first one in line so I headed for the front of the boat on the left side, which I was very happy with.

All the boats are different, some with two stories and some with just one outside seating area. Most people stayed in their seats for the entire tour, however, if you’re a photographer like me you’ll probably want to move around. And you will be looking up most of the time, so your seat isn’t all that important.

My cruise was in November, meaning it was quite cold and windy. I wore a windbreaker with a knitted sweater underneath, a beanie, gloves and winter boots. Being Norwegian and all, I also brought a seating mat, you know one of those that keep your butt warm in the seat.

But despite the cold, the cruise was so worth it. Our funny guide did his very best to keep us upbeat and not only passed on a lot of knowledge about the architecture but also cracked many jokes. I was laughing, shooting photos and sipping on a warm tea that I bought from the bar the whole time.

If I were to do another architectural boat tour like this, I would probably choose one for sunset. I can only imagine how beautiful it would have been with sunflares and a golden color lighting up the buildings.

How to choose a river cruise in Chicago

There are many different types of cruises to choose from, so consider the following factors to ensure the best experience:

  • Tour length : Determine how much time you want to spend on the tour. Options typically range from 45 minutes to two hours. And you should show up at least 30 minutes early, to get in line and secure a good spot at the front or side of the boat. Especially during high season.
  • Time of day : Decide whether you prefer a daytime tour for better photography lighting, a sunset cruise for dramatic views, or an evening tour for a city lights experience. Many of the companies offer departures from 10:00 am and then throughout the day.
  • Boat amenities : Consider the type of boat and amenities offered, such as open-air decks, climate-controlled interiors, restrooms, and refreshments.
  • Accessibility : Ensure the boat and facilities are accessible if you or someone in your group has mobility challenges. Only a few cruises are wheelchair accessible, as far as I can tell.
  • Departure point : Choose a cruise that departs from a convenient location, easily reachable from where you’re staying or your other planned activities.
  • Cancellation policy : Chicago’s weather can be unpredictable. Check the cruise’s weather policy regarding cancellations and rescheduling. With Viator , you can easily pay later and cancel up to 24 hours before the experience starts (local time).
  • Reviews and rating s: Read reviews from previous guests to gauge the quality of the tour and customer service. The tour I recommend has over 10,000 5-star reviews, which is almost unheard of.
  • Private or public tour : Decide if you want a private tour for a more personalized experience or if you’re comfortable joining a public tour with other guests. If you prefer to bring your family and friends on a more exclusive experience, check out this Chicago River by Private Boat Tour .

Several companies offer architectural river cruises in Chicago, some of the well-known companies include:

  • Shoreline Sightseeing : Offering both architecture and classic lake tours, Shoreline Sightseeing is one of the most popular choices for visitors looking to explore Chicago’s architectural wonders.
  • Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) : Operated by the Chicago Architecture Center aboard the First Lady, these cruises are known for their knowledgeable docent-led tours, providing in-depth information about over 50 buildings along the Chicago River.
  • Wendella Sightseeing Co. : The OG of Chicago architecture cruises. As one of the oldest family-owned boat tour companies in Chicago, Wendella offers a variety of tours, including its signature architecture cruise.
  • Mercury, Chicago’s Skyline Cruiseline : Mercury offers a comprehensive Urban Adventure Cruise that delves into the architectural features of the city’s famous skyline.
  • Seadog Cruises : For those looking for a more thrilling experience, Seadog Cruises offers speedboat tours that include an architectural focus.
  • Chicago Line Cruises : This company provides architectural cruises with a focus on educating guests about the design and history of significant buildings.

Popular tours can fill up quickly, especially during peak tourist seasons. So I recommend booking in advance to secure your spot.

Why the Chicago Architectural Boat Tour is So Popular

  • August 16, 2017

Earlier this summer, TripAdvisor named  the Chicago architectural boat tour the single most popular tour in America. That got me to wondering, what is it that makes it so popular?

Sometimes our walking tour guides are hired out to lead a Chicago River boat tour, often on a private yacht charter via Anita Dee Yacht Charters . But the tours from Chicago Detours are mostly either walking tours or cars by bus or sedan. They’re quite popular, but it’s fair to say we’re not number one in the whole country.

So, call it market research or just call it idle musing, but I wanted to think on what, besides discounted prices on Groupon, makes the boat tours so beloved. (By the way, if you’re not in Chicago but want the experience, then reach out to us about the Cruise From Your Couch Virtual Boat Tour .)

We research stories from Chicago history, architecture and culture like this while developing our  live virtual tours ,   in-person private tours , and  custom content for corporate events . You can join us to experience Chicago’s stories in-person or online. We can also create  custom tours and original conten t about this Chicago topic and countless others.

#1. The View from the River

The most obviously appealing part of Chicago architectural boat tour is the view. There are few other cities on Earth that can rival the density and size of our skyline. The city includes everything from long-famous landmarks like the Tribune Tower to brand-new wonders like 150 N. Riverside .  From down on the river, the skyscrapers soar hundreds, even thousands of feet into the sky. There’s a pure and simple pleasure in getting to sit back and enjoy such a sight, especially on a gorgeous summer evening.

I think being down on the water itself is part of what makes the view so magical. The streets and sidewalks of Chicago have been raised about 25-30 feet above the natural level of the ground and water. The buildings themselves hug close to the water in downtown. It looks for all the world like you’re passing through a gorge amidst massive mountains of steel, glass, and limestone when you travel down the river. So any spot along the river gives you a dramatic, low-angle view of these soaring, iconic structures clustered into artificial canyons. It’s easy to understand why that’s so popular.

#2. Boat Cruises are Relaxing

There’s a simple, tactile pleasure to feeling a boat steadily pull you along. I always find it very relaxing to step aboard a Chicago architectural boat tour and feel the slight bob and weave of the water. It returns me to the foundation of Chicago. 200 years ago, what would become this modern metropolis was just a swampy stretch of lakeshore with a small river weaving through. The river is one of our last remaining links to the landscape that Joliet , DuSable , Beaubien , or Lincoln would have known. In that slower, older state of mind, I can simply relax and passively watch the city go rolling past me when on a boat tour.

#3. Our World-Class Architectural Heritage

Not to be presumptuous, but I think the buildings themselves are a huge part of the appeal for a Chicago architectural boat tour. This city has become iconic for its architecture in the 146 years since the Great Chicago Fire. That disaster gave architects from all over the world a blank slate when it burned away the old core of Chicago. Into the breach have come some of the most famous names in 19th, 20th, and 21st century architecture:  Daniel Burnham . Louis Sullivan. Holabird and Root . Mies van der Rohe . Fazlur Rahman Khan . Helmut Jahn . Jeanne Gang . The names go on and on.

Their physical legacy is the stunning array of buildings strung along the banks of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. The Chicago architectural boat tour lets you luxuriate in this architectural dreamscape. Oftentimes, the boat guides themselves don’t even need to impress anything onto the guests. The sights themselves do all the talking, really. (It’s nice when you’re on a Chicago architectural boat tour during the fireworks, too). In fact, we notice when guiding tours with Tours and Boats that some of the guests don’t even understand English!

chicago architectural boat tour

#4. The Clever Engineering of Chicago Skyscrapers

That being said, a good Chicago architectural boat tour guide or docent will fill you in on a lot of cool details regarding how everything was built. Maybe it’s just because I’m an architecture nerd, but I love the engineering techniques that go into holding up a skyscraper. Take, for example, Khan’s ingenious design for the Sears Tower . According to the urban legend, he had been asked to design the building and took a smoke break to think about it. When he tapped the pack of cigarettes a bolt of inspiration struck him. Bundling discrete towers together like cigarettes in pack made the building stronger. That internal strength enabled it to be taller. This “bundled tube” design enabled the construction of the landmark tower.

Facts like that fascinate and amuse me. They illustrate the inventiveness that’s required to create a world-class city like Chicago.

#5. What to Do After a Chicago Architectural Boat Tour

Join us for another tour, of course! We always like to say that our walking tours of Chicago are the perfect compliment to the boat tours. Our Downtown Bucket list private tour takes you into some of the city’s famous and overlooked highlights. Stepping into these buildings, and the also the underground Pedway system , after taking a boat tour gives you a more complete sense of the city.

Or of course you can just grab a meal. River Roast is a great option with seating right along the river.

Here’s to seeing you on the water and streets of Chicago soon!
