Vampire Weekend have released “Mary Boone” — the fourth and final advance offering from Only God Was Above Us out April 5th via Columbia Records. Written by Ezra Koenig and featuring a sample of the iconic drum loop from “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)" by Soul II Soul. Produced by Ariel Rechtshaid and Koenig, with lush orchestral arrangements by Will Canzoneri, Koenig and Rechtshaid, the song — named for one of the most influential figures of the NYC art world of the 1980s—features a soaring, operatic choir alongside Koenig’s understated but honeyed vocals, and lyrics referencing Tadao Ando churches, Natarajas, hex signs, and whirling Dervishes. To date, Ezra Koenig, Chris Tomson and Chris Baio have released four songs from Only God Was Above Us: “Gen-X Cops,” “Capricorn,” “Classical” and now “Mary Boone”—evincing a diverse array of sounds and narratives, yet only revealing less than half of the album’s staggering range and depth.

To accompany the news of Mary Boone, Vampire Weekend have announced a run of live shows, including two shows at Eventim Apollo this December.

“Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cop,” the first music to be released by the rock band in five years, were released alongside videos built around footage of New York circa 1988 by album art photographer Steven Siegel.

Directed by longtime Vampire Weekend creative director Nick Harwood, “Capricorn” is a visual journey to late ‘80s New York City that showcases the alluring yet grimy era of the city— before breaking to modern-day Vampire Weekend. “Gen-X Cops,” directed by Drew Pearce, uses the exact film stocks Siegel used in 1988 and features the only authentic 1970s New York subway car on the West Coast. Both videos are now available on the band’s YouTube .

VAMPIRE WEEKEND Announces First New Music In 5 Years and Massive North American Tour

Having ended a half decade of anticipation with last week’s album announcement, Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio and Chris Tomson p/k/a Vampire Weekend now fill that void with “Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops,” a double portion of first tastes of the anxiously awaited Only God Was Above Us , available April 5 via Columbia Records. Pre-order is available now here .

Simultaneously, the band has confirmed a full scale North American headline tour. Produced by Live Nation, the 39-date trek follows a select few previously announced festival headlines, a sold-out show in the shadow of the solar eclipse, and will include three unique two-show engagements that will see Vampire Weekend play Saturday night shows followed by Sunday morning sets at the Greek Theater in Berkeley CA, KettleHouse Amphitheater in Bonner MT and New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The newly released pair of advance tracks showcase distinctly different aspects of Only God Was Above Us, while feeling very much parts of the same whole. “Capricorn,” written by Ezra Koenig and produced by Ariel Rechtstaid and Koenig, begins on a deceptively subdued note, its honeyed melodies and arpeggiated keys launching into a transcendent chorus featuring a maelstrom of distorted guitars and vibrant drum fills. “Gen-X Cops,” co-written by Koenig and Chris Tomson, and produced by Rechtstaid, Koenig and Tomson, kicks off with a frantic guitar figure befitting a title lifted from a 1990s Hong Kong action movie, and rides a jaunty beat to an anthemic refrain of “Each generation makes its own apology.”

Each of the new tunes is accompanied by a new video built around footage of New York circa 1988 by Only God Was Above Us album art photographer Steven Siegel. Directed by longtime Vampire Weekend creative director Nick Harwood, “Capricorn” is a visual journey to late ‘80s New York City that showcases the alluring yet grimy era of the city— before breaking to modern day Vampire Weekend. “Gen-X Cops,” directed by Drew Pearce (The Fall Guy, Hotel Artemis, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Iron Man 3), takes a decidedly different route to authenticity, utilizing the exact film-stocks Siegel used in 1988, and tracking down the only authentic 1970s New York subway car on the west coast. Pearce and DP Doug Emmett then meticulously researched the actual light patterns of 1980s subway tunnels in order to build a rig that would emulate them as well as shooting “Gen-X Cops” on 8mm and 16mm cameras to ensure maximum precision.

Only God Was Above Us will be available April 5 via Columbia Records and  will be available digitally, and physically on CD, standard black vinyl, limited edition clear vinyl on the band’s webstore, and with an alternate album cover available exclusively at Independent retailers. Pre-order here: https://vampireweekend.lnk.to/OGWAU/vinyl1

Support acts for Vampire Weekend’s upcoming tour have been hand-picked and carefully curated by Koenig, Baio and Tomson. Every region of the country will be treated to their own very special guests — several of whom hold local significance —all of whom are beloved by the band. Those guests include: LA LOM, The English Beat, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Mike Gordon, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Ra Ra Riot, Princess featuring Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum, Cults, a DJ Set By Mark Ronson, Turnstiles and The Brothers Macklovitch. Please refer to the tour poster for more information on which acts will appear on which dates.

Vampire Weekend Announces Huge North American Tour in 2024, Plus New Music

by Em Casalena February 16, 2024, 2:05 pm

American rock outfit Vampire Weekend surprised fans this week with the first singles from their much-anticipated studio album, Only God Was Above Us . The album is slated for release on April 5, but the singles “ Gen-X Cops ” and “ Capricorn ” just went live yesterday.

Videos by American Songwriter

Only God Was Above Us Tour: Details

Along with the songs, Vampire Weekend has also announced a massive tour of North America to promote the album. Supporting acts include La Lom, The English Beat, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Mike Gordon, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Princess, Ra Ra Riot, Cults, The Brothers Macklovitch, Turnstiles, and Mark Ronson.

The Only God Was Above Us Tour will start on April 8 in Austin, Texas at the Moody Amphitheater, which has already sold out. The tour is expected to close on October 17, again in Austin Texas at the Mood Amphitheater, pending any additional tour date additions.

The band has been pretty busy promoting the upcoming album and tour via Instagram , but they have also been mysteriously mum about the album and tour’s details. The only bit of info we could find was in a press release for the album which noted that frontman Ezra Koenig described the album as “inspired and haunted by 20th-century New York” and that it was co-produced by Ariel Rechtshaid.

How to Get Your Tickets

Getting tickets to this tour might be a little rough since fans are definitely going to be scrambling to get in on the presale events. Ticketmaster is the main ticketing platform for this tour, and the platform’s presale event will start on February 20 at 10:00 am CST. There are also some additional presale events available, and you can get the deets on those through Vampire Weekend’s website . You can also get your early access code for the presale event through the band’s website.

If you miss the presale event by the time tickets go on sale on February 23 at 10:00 am local time, we recommend using StubHub to get your tickets. StubHub is a solid third-party ticketing platform that makes scoring seats easy, and all tickets on the platform are protected by the FanProtect Program.

About Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend was formed back in 2006 in New York City by Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij (who has since left the band), Chris Baio, and Chris Tomson. They quickly rose to fame after the debut of their eponymous album in 2008 with hits like “A-Punk” and “Oxford Comma”. The band’s most recent album was Father of the Bride , which was released half a decade ago in 2019. Fans have been anxiously anticipating new music from the indie rock outfit, and it looks like they’ll get that and a massive tour as well!

This tour will sell out fast, and some of the early tour dates have already sold out or are coming close to selling out. Get your tickets now before it’s too late!

Vampire Weekend’s New Album Goes Underground and All Over

Digging into “only god was above us,” an lp that’s both catchy and complex..

Vampire Weekend recently released its fifth album, “Only God Was Above Us .” From the band that got started nearly two decades ago at Columbia University but now resides in Los Angeles, it’s an LP that ponders hitting 40, the lessons of history, generational legacies, myths and memories of New York City and Vampire Weekend’s own peculiar status as both an indie-rock success story and an arty pop outlier. It’s also the band’s noisiest album — and perhaps its kindliest.

On this week’s Popcast with the guest host Jon Pareles, three critics discuss Vampire Weekend’s latest conundrums, counterpoint, sonic extremes and hidden jam-band core — and its fascination with tunnels.

Amanda Petrusich, staff writer at The New Yorker

Matthew Strauss, deputy managing editor of Pitchfork

In the hours before country superstar Chris Stapleton, R&B belter Fantasia and indie rock band Vampire Weekend closed the 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s main stages on Saturday, the festival occasionally paused to remember.

A jazz funeral procession on the Fair Grounds infield honored Russell Batiste Jr., the renowned New Orleans drummer and character who died of a heart attack last year at 57 . Later, his extended family in the Batiste Brothers sang his praises at the Congo Square Stage.

The late Bob Jones, an instrumental figure in the early years of Jazz Fest who worked closely with founder George Wein, was installed among the Ancestors at the Congo Square field.

News broke Saturday morning that Nick Daniels III, the much-loved and much-respected New Orleans funk bassist and singer, had died the previous evening of complications from blood cancer.

Just 68, Daniels was one of two bassists in Dumpstaphunk, the band led by his lifelong friend Ivan Neville. He was a sideman for the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Etta James, Boz Scaggs and many others.

At the Economy Hall Tent, jazz clarinetist and retired Xavier University professor Dr. Michael White mentioned Daniels’ passing, along with Clarence “Frogman” Henry, Kerry “Fatman” Hunter and other musicians lost over the previous months.

He also acknowledged Dr. Bart Nassberg, a retired physician from New Jersey who made annual pilgrimages to Jazz Fest for more than 25 years with his wife, Barbara.

“Many of you are like a family to us, because we see you every year,” White said to the audience. Dr. Nassberg sometimes led second-lines at Economy Hall: “You would all know him if you saw him.”

It was up to others to lead Saturday's second line in Dr. Nassberg’s honor. A couple dozen friends moved slowly and solemnly – as solemnly as folks in full festival attire can – between the seats and the stage as White’s blue-tinged clarinet led a dirge-like “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”

“In the true spirit of a jazz funeral, we end on a happy note,” White continued. “This is for Bart Nassberg.”

With that, the Original Liberty Jazz Band kicked off a spirited “Over in the Gloryland,” with trumpeter Gregg Stafford on lead vocals. The second-line marchers, their ranks greatly increased, danced their way in a circle around the rows of seats.

Fantasia works hard, Vampire Weekend missing a bassist

The Fair Grounds was far fuller than it was Thursday or Friday. The day was cloudy, with a stiff, steady breeze that kicked up dirt from the track, giving fest-goers a light exfoliation.

The throngs roaming the grounds included actor Matthew Gray Gubler, star of the CBS drama “Criminal Minds,” who paused to patiently take selfies with a quartet of teenage girls near the Ochsner Medical Tent.

At the main Festival Stage, acclaimed bluegrass guitarist, banjoist and bandleader Molly Tuttle rocked a sparkling pink dress. Some fans may have been surprised when, late in her set with her Golden Highway, Tuttle, either by virtue of the wind or by design, ditched her long red wig.

Diagnosed as a child with alopecia areata, hair loss caused by the immune system attacking hair follicles, Tuttle has written about her journey and her lifelong debates about presenting herself publicly with or without a wig. At Jazz Fest, she did both, finishing with her head bald and earning a big ovation.

At the Gentilly Stage, Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig opened with a disclaimer: bassist Chris Baio was “sick as a dog” and would miss his first gig since 2006. Conveniently, Vampire Weekend uses two drummers onstage, so one of them, Chris “CT” Tomson, switched to bass – something he’d never done at a Vampire Weekend gig.

“We’re going to have some fun with bass to start out,” Koenig said. “Why not play without bass? That would sound crazy. It’s like Jenga. Take out a piece and it gets all wobbly.”

Tomson made his bass debut on “Classical,” from the Vampire Weekend’s new “Only God Was Above Us” album. He and the rest of the band didn’t sound all that wobbly.

At a full Congo Square field, Fantasia Barrino turned up in a fringed white vest and matching, chaps-like pants. “I don’t come to be cute for you,” she declared. “I come to give you your money’s worth!”

She asked for a favor: “Go ahead and get your pictures now. Now put your phone down and get your money’s worth.”

With that, her bass-and-beat-heavy band dug into “Change Your Mind,” with Fantasia working hard to, yes, give fans their money’s worth.

Stapleton served straight, no chaser

Chris Stapleton plus good weather added up to the year's largest crowd so far at the Festival Stage. Armed with a Fender guitar and one of the most soulful voices in country music, Stapleton dug into back-to-back songs about screwing up, or trying not to: “You Should Probably Leave” and “Nobody to Blame.”

He teed up the stark “Cold,” spiking it with a stinging guitar solo and a wail, his eyes cast sideways at his wife and bandmate, Morgane.

He teased out the opening verse and refrain of “Freebird,” his guitar his only accompaniment; his is one of the few voices that can sing “Freebird” without irony. It segued into “The Devil Named Music,” as country of a country song as is possible.

As flags whipped in the wind, Stapleton and company breezed through “Traveller.” After singing the introductions of his bandmembers, he poured a final shot of “Tennessee Whiskey,” a nightcap on a big day at Jazz Fest.

Taylor Swift parties with Travis Kelce, Mahomes couple in Vegas as she feels ‘sad’ about going back on tour: reports

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

It’s party time!

Taylor Swift reportedly partied with boyfriend Travis Kelce and friends Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes in Las Vegas less than two weeks before she’s set to go back on her Eras Tour.

The foursome recently hit up Easy’s Cocktail Lounge   inside the Aria Resort & Casino for a night of drinking and fun, according to TMZ .

The celeb hotspot is reportedly “secluded” and “tucked away” inside the Proper Eats Food Hall in the hotel, making it hard for fans to spot the famous group.

The outlet does not yet have pictures of Swift hanging out with Kelce and pals Brittany and Patrick, both 28, in Sin City, and reps for the stars did not immediately return our requests for comment.

Since Swift has been having the time of her life with her boyfriend and friends, she is reportedly feeling torn about returning to the international leg of her Eras Tour after spending so much time with Kelce.

A source told Us Weekly Friday that the “Bad Blood” singer and the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, both 34, have “deepened their bond” during “all the time they’ve spent together recently.”

“It makes the prospect of her tour more challenging. She’ll be sad,” the insider claimed.

Swift’s tour is set to resume May 9 in Paris.

However, the couple, who went public last September, both understand that work is their top priority.

“They support and respect [each other],” Us Weekly’s source also said.

“They have busy careers, so they understand those commitments, as difficult as it is.”

Since Swift’s last international show in Singapore in March, she and Kelce have been spotted on several outings together.

Last month, the couple was seen on a romantic vacation in the Bahamas .

Swift, who wore a yellow-and-white striped bikini  by Montce ( top  $143,  bottom  $94) and black sunglasses during the getaway, kissed her beau at the time, as they frolicked together in the clear blue water.

Then, two weeks ago, the pair attended Coachella to catch Swift’s pals Ice Spice and Jack Antonoff perform.

At one point, Kelce protectively wrapped his arms around his girlfriend as they danced in the crowd.

Although the “Cruel Summer” songstress will be back on the road soon, Kelce — who is currently in his offseason from the NFL — shared that he will be traveling to Europe to support Swift at a few of her shows.

“Oh, you know I gotta go support,” he told “Entertainment Tonight” earlier this month when asked if he would be “packing [his] bags” soon.

The “Catching Kelce” alum also told the outlet that he is more than happy to be there for Swift like she was there for him during the most recent NFL season.

“We are both very career-driven,” Kelce added.

“I think we both love what we do and any chance that I can show my support to her — knowing that she has shown me all the support in the world throughout the season — it’s just been an amazing experience getting to know Tay.”
