CHVRCHES are an electronic pop group from Glasgow, Scotland, who formed in 2011 and released their debut full-length, “The Bones of What You Believe”, in September 2013.

As has increasingly become the case for electronic acts in the past few years, CHVRCHES actually managed to generate some serious buzz about their music despite never having played a live show; in fact, such was the intensity of the attention that was on them from the beginning that they felt compelled to play their first ever gigs under an alternative name - Shark Week - as they were still in the process of figuring out how to translate their specific brand of synthpop to the stage and were eager not to have some uneven early performances come to define them, especially in front of crowds that would likely be packed out with music bloggers and A&R record label employees. Not that they should have worried, though, because they’ve certainly not wanted for the opportunity to practice since; vocalist Lauren Mayberry and synth operators Iain Cook and Martin Doherty have been on the road pretty much relentlessly since early singles “Recover” and “The Mother We Share” were met with a rapturous reception in early 2013.

All three members have some degree of musical experience - Mayberry as a member of Blue Sky Thinking, Doherty as a live performer with The Twilight Sad and Cook as part of Aerogramme and The Unwinding Hours - but it all seems to have come together pretty spectacularly for them as CHVRCHES (the v was intended to make their name easier to find through search engines.) They’re looking ahead, now, to writing album number two once they wrap up their final commitments for “The Bones of What You Believe” - something they can do with their reputation as one of Britain’s most exciting young bands ensured.

Live reviews

I consider myself a Chvrches fan, so was very excited about this gig in advance. The concert was at The Bournemouth O2 Academy. The queues stretched for what seemed like miles, but they got us in quickly. A mix of age groups in attendance, but mostly younger people. Good to know synth-pop can still have a young following.

Firstly the support act, Let's Eat Grandma. I hadn't heard of them prior to the gig and from the name I thought they might be thrash metal, however I was very pleasantly surprised when three girls came onto the stage playing (dark) synth-pop. One on drums, and the other two played synths and sang. Also we were treated to glockenspiel, saxophone and recorder amongst others. After the gig I downloaded their album which is now playing in my car.

They played for about 45 minutes. The highlights for me were Whitewater, Hot Pink and Falling Into Me. Unfortunately I missed an opportunity to meet the band as I had a great place near the front and didn't want to lose the top spot watching Lauren Mayberry!

Now Chvrches entered the stage after a break. Lauren's high pitched squeak, endeared me to her even more as she introduced songs and pleased us with general chit chat.

They opened with Get Out, recent big chart hit, and infectious anthem. Straight into Bury It, which I am now used to with the Hayley Williams (Paramore) vocal, so I noticed when it was lacking. It didn't detract from the enjoyment one bit though.

Gun came next, a classic, then (in my opinion) their best song We Sink from the first album The Bones of What You Believe. So euphoric, that it has perked me up on many a bad day.

Another recent hit Graffiti came next, then Graves, a gem from the new album Love Is Dead, this could have been a single. After that I had hoped to hear Heaven/Hell, but unfortunately it was absent from the set list. Shame. They can't do them all I suppose!

Martin Doherty was up on main vocals for the next two songs. God's Plan and Under The Tide. I've always really liked his songs. Martin displayed a lot of energy and on his own was great, but get back behind that keyboard boy now, here she comes again.

Lauren came back with Miracle and then Science/Visions. As we reached the end, hand went up like we were all at a rave, in fitting with the edgy feel of this track.

Really Gone, Deliverance, Forever and Recover came next. Lauren announced the last two songs, Leave a Trace and Clearest Blue. It was so great to hear Clearest Blue live, so infectious and a defining song for everything Chvrches, a fun electro-stomper which namecheck the second album (Every Open Eye).

Of course there was an encore. Obviously they performed The Mother We Share, this was followed by the final song New Say Die. A great ending to a fantastic gig.

In general the sound was great, but occasionally the vocal dipped below and it was harder to hear Lauren. It was loud, but then I was right at the front.

The songs were pretty much in versions close to their released format, though the encore version of The Mother We Share started with some atmospheric pads before the "Oh ah oh oh ah ah" we all know and love.

I had hoped for a cover version, but actually their own songs are so great, it would have meant missing one out, so better that they didn't. I will be at the next UK tour 1000%! 9/10

For a 3-piece from Glasgow, CHVRCHES pack an incredible punch live and they have a warmth that many other bands can only dream of. Lauren Mayberry is, on the face of it, a very unassuming front woman but, as their live show kicks in, you’re transfixed. She has an air of cool and ease about everything she does and her inbetween-songs banter is funny and lighthearted; the kind of conversation you have with your closest friends.

Irrespective of the venue size (I’ve seen them in art schools in the Netherlands through to theatres in London and at outdoor festivals too), they always make a show seem intimate and their songs take you on a journey. From the punchiness of tracks like Lies and We Sink, through to the subtlety of Tether, they hit all the markers for a great live act.

When Martin Doherty steps out from Keyboard duties to perform Under The Tide that you see a dancier side to their show – and the crowd reacts as if they’ve been transported to the best rave of their life! Their simple lighting rig (with an LED recreation of the cover to their album, The Bones of What You Believe, as a backdrop) helps to accentuate the stripped-back set-up and allows their songs to really take centre stage.

Whatever you do though, don't go with expectations of them to play a lot of the cover versions that they've performed on radio shows. It's 100% about CHVRCHES. And rightfully so. I can never bore of watching them live – and that comes from someone who has seen them 13 times (so far)!

It was after midnight at a post ACL show in Austin where CHVRCHES lit up a room full of half asleep concert goers and put on an amazing show. Seeing as most people in the venue had either attended Austin City Limits that day or were exhausted from a long week of work, it didn't seem like it would be the most lively crowd. However, when the light show started and the music began, the whole room was alive. CHVRCHES woke us up like we had all injected a few cups of coffee straight into our bloodstreams.

The overall presentation of the show was top notch. The CHVRCHES logo design lit up in the back of the stage to open up the show and changed colors to match the mood of the music. Flashing lights matched the beat of the music and painted the crowd with neon colors. The whole band was energetic and put on a great show. You could tell they love what they do and love the music they make.

In terms of the music, it sounded almost indistinguishable from their recorded album, if not better. CHVRCHES played to perfection and Lauren's voice was spot on throughout the whole show. The energy they brought through the music and their stage presence projected onto the crowd and got everybody moving. They also had some banter between themselves and the crowd to really add a personal touch to the show. This one show proved to me that CHVRCHES know how to put on a great show and make memories. If any CHVRCHES shows pop up around me I'll be sure to do everything I can to attend, and I suggest you do as well.

Come for the music, stay for the Scottish charm.

This was my third time seeing CHVRCHES and it's been great to see them mature and become more and more comfortable in their own skin. The songs are amazing and translate perfectly live. Watching Iain stroke a guitar or drum up a beat while Martin does his hypnotizing beeps and blorps would be enough for even the most casual concert-goer. Add spritely Lauren to the mix and you have a very engaging, entertaining show.

Lauren's off-the-cuff commentary and sense of humor make the shows more relaxed and approachable. We in the Midwest don't get many Scottish acts, so when we hear that charming accent it's hard not to smile and want to run up and give her a big hug.

The show itself is amazing start to finish. The light show has gotten better and better and compliments the music perfectly. Sharing singing duties between Lauren and Martin helps please all members of the audience while giving a nicely shifting dynamic to the show. Now, this being my third time seeing them in a little over a year may speak for itself. Their EP and album are amazing and their live show doesn't disappoint; it's a great compliment to this super talented, up-and-coming Scottish act.

Chvrches has been my favorite band ever since they first started. I have wanted to see them live for years but never could because I couldn't afford it or we just didn't have time. What I know of, they don't come to America often, because they live in Scotland. Well once I figured out they were coming, I traded my piggy bank money for these tickets. Let me tell you, that must've been one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Everyone in the audience was nice and cheerful and they didn't mind if you went all the way to the front. Well, as always, I cut to the front so I could be closer to my idols. I got some axmazing photos. Lauren is always super nice and funny, and her voice was OUTSTANDING. A lot of artist don't sound good live but Lauren Mayberry has an outstanding voice, ever since Boyfriend/Girlfriend and Blue Sky Archives. Ian and Martin did an amazing job with the sound, they didn't mess up once! I went to a concert one time and the band kept messing up with the guitars and drums. The lights and fog made the show look incredible! Lauren, Ian, and Martin DEFINATTLY know how to put on a good show. 100/100 for them! It's definitely a show I will NEVER forget!

Let me say first and foremost, Chvrches is the best. Best on record, best on stage. Their sound and stage presence is unequalled.

That said, how on earth do you match up Chvrches tour de force energy and massive sound and lights, with the cavernous compacted Wiltern? It was not a good match. I've seen Chvrches many times live, and they are built to play unrestricted venues. No stage or arena is too large for them. The result was the sound reverberated in all directions, too loud, too contained, with an overtly dizzying affect from the light show spectacular, but not the good kind of dizzy.

Chrvches = Wiltern.... not a good match.

Again, Chvrches is the best live show I've seen at different venues. They are truely standup for playing a benefit show for great causes. Cannot wait to see them live in 2020. My dream would be to see them play an acoustic show at a small club. But please, think about matching the sound to the surroundings.

Not my first CHVRCHES show, but the best! The entire band was in really fantastic form, and Lauren's voice was both powerful and flawless-- and her constant being sure to cover the entire stage ensures that even the people on the very edge of the crowd feel like they're in the front row. As ever, they brought a ton of energy and enthusiasm to the stage, as well as fun. Lauren, who often fills the little breaks between songs with non sequiturs, drew attention to a group of people dressed in rather strange animal costumes, and Iain suggested that they should include them in the show somehow. Martin jumped on the idea, and Lauren told them to make their way to the side of the stage. Several songs later the creatures came out dancing, at which point Lauren struggled to sing at all through laughter. She apologized to the crowd afterwards, "I just see you dancing over here and I wonder, is this how I die?" I really fantastic, fun show!

Amazing concert!! The music was pretty much perfect, not a single mistake by any of the band members! It sounded just like the studio version, except it was a concert of course, making the experience soo much better.

The band was so energetic the entire concert through and emphasized the atmosphere of every song perfectly, especially Lauren.

There was also an amazing lightshow where there were panels in the background which showed some of the album art as well as some well made animations related to the songs that were playing.

In addition, Laurens talks between the songs really made for some funny moments.

Would definitely recommend seeing them live, it's an awesome experience!

The best concert of my life. Lauren, Martin and Iain hold nothing back and were at least as excited as the sold out venue. This is one of the best bands to see live, because even if they don't have the frenzy factor that a live drummer always brings along, they are some of the most committed, professional and down to earth bands. Lauren is the perfect frontperson, perfect voice, silly and fun interaction with the crowd and ALWAYS moving up & down the stage. But oh man, when Martin sings, it's time to get fucking TURNT, SON! Martin's Under The Tide is one of the natural phenomenoms everyone has to see once in their lifetime.

10/10 would die for them

Saw them in April 2016 at Brooklyn Bowl in Vegas and enjoyed the show a great deal. The band are tight and musically adept live - Lauren Mayberry's voice is particularly strong - and their set nicely mixed new and old material. But what stood out is their charming and deeply engaging stage presence. You can see why their touring and festival appearances continue to win them fans. Mayberry turns out to be a sharp, confident, and wonderfully self-deprecating storyteller between tunes. A fun evening of well-crafted electronic pop tunes, delivered by a band you sense it would be rewarding to have a beer, chat and laugh with after the gig. Recommended.

Reviewing the gig,  NME described it as a “gothic sci-fi spectacular”.

Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry Announces Solo Music, Tour During Band Hiatus

By Tomás Mier

Lauren Mayberry is stepping away from Chvrches to make music on her own for the first time. On Thursday, the musician reflected on the 10th anniversary of the group’s debut LP, The Bones of What You Believe , as she announced plans to tour as a solo artist — but assured that Chvrches isn’t done forever.

“I met Iain [Cook] and Martin [Doherty] when I was 23 — a little baby of a person, in hindsight. Looking back on what we’ve achieved together, so much of it doesn’t feel real or even possible,” the Scottish star wrote on Instagram. “I am so proud of all the chapters our band has been able to have and I am so grateful to my bandmates for taking me on that journey with them.”

“We are all confident that the Chvrches story has many more pages yet to be written,” she continued.

“For a long time, I couldn’t imagine ever doing anything outside of Chvrches. Since I was 15 years old, I have always, only, ever been in a band,” she wrote. “I always wanted so badly to belong somewhere — to be one of the boys, and to fit in.”

“But as I sail/stumble through this era of my life (your 20s really do go by in a flash, kids), it has started to feel like there are things I want to write and say and do that need to be done on my own,” she continued.

Tickets for her solo tour will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on Friday for her shows in the U.S. and on Monday in Europe. “I guess here we fucking go?!” she ended her post.

Chvrches Returns With Huge Single ‘Over,’ Island Records Deal & ‘A New Lease on Life’

The new track, created with "Blinding Lights" co-producer Oscar Holter, was an "incredibly freeing" moment for the trio, says the band's Martin Doherty.

CHVRCHES

Chvrches has never been prone to releasing one-off singles that aren’t tethered to either a larger project or is a collaboration with another artist. Yet the long-running Scottish trio is kicking off their 2023 with “Over,” a behemoth of a synth-pop track due out on Friday (Feb. 24) that represents a new chapter for Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty — who celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut album this year, and are using the new single to launch their recent major-label deal.

Trending on Billboard

The demo floated in the ether for a few years: the band knew “Over” could be a big song for them, but it didn’t fit on a project like 2021’s Screen Violence , which the trio wanted to write and produce completely on their own. At the end of 2022, the band reconnected with Holter, who wanted to revisit “Over” and help flesh it out into a proper Chvrches song.

The trio and Holter punched up the track and “got it to a point where everyone was happy with it,” explains Doherty, “and where it felt like somewhere that Chvrches could be going, potentially — that isn’t to say that’s where we’re going, but something that felt 2023, and not like something that’s been kicking around for a few years.”

“There’s something incredibly freeing and no-strings about thinking outside of a long-form narrative, for the first time in 10 years,” says Doherty. “It’s quite liberating, and quite fun.”

After rising to fame and releasing their first four studio albums with Glassnote Records, Chvrches signed a new deal with Island Records in North American and EMI in the U.K. last year. Mayberry says that the label jump was the product of an amicable split at a time when the prospect of a new direction was appealing. “We’ve always been really lucky to have great partners with what we were doing,” she says. “Making some of the changes was quite emotional … But we’re really excited by what Island and EMI were bringing to the table.

“I don’t know if we’ve necessarily benefited from the kind of old-school approach — getting songs on the radio, et cetera,” Mayberry continues. “I don’t think that blueprint works for us. And a lot of that is based on — alternative radio in America is all f—king men! It’s all men! And there was a time, at the beginning of the band especially, where there was a narrative of, ‘Oh, we’ve just playlisted [another] band with a female vocalist,’ even if they sounded completely different than us. So it was really exciting to talk to people who viewed it more holistically, like, ‘Where are Chvrches fans, and how can we get things to them?’”

“Whatever we make next, we have to take the time on it,” she says. “It has to move the conversation forward in some way.”

“It’s an incredibly rare and privileged position after such a long period of time,” adds Cook, nodding to the decade-long run of the band since their 2013 debut, The Bones of What You Believe . “We don’t really have any kind of ceiling on things, or know this is how long this is gonna go on for. We’re just taking things as they come in, and as long as we’re enjoying it, we’ll keep doing it.”

Lauren Mayberry photographed in London by Suki Dhanda for the Observer New Review, February 2024.

Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry: ‘I was fixated with death… I needed to live in reality’

The frontwoman of the Scottish synth-pop trio had a dream music career, but it came with years of online misogyny and artistic frustration. As she prepares to release her debut solo album, she discusses going her own way

A graphic novel company recently sent Lauren Mayberry a pitch asking if they could use her likeness. The comic was to be set in a post-apocalyptic Scotland (Mayberry is from Glasgow and was born in Stirling) and it featured Lauren, feminist firebrand, as one of a group of women who, Hand maid’s Tale -style, had been imprisoned, repeatedly raped and inseminated by the planet’s remaining men. Lauren was going to free all the women, and then take them to the Highlands – where they’d start a revolution!

Mayberry, desensitised to this geek version of what she calls “men’s feminism”, sent a polite reply, saying that tonally it was a little odd, and could they possibly explore some alternative ideas. The pitch was not unusual: the difference, these days, was that it came via her female manager with a “not sure about this one” attached, and she didn’t have to explain to any men why she turned it down.

Mayberry sits in the garden room of a very trendy Hackney hotel at 10am on a Sunday: the same hotel where, 10 years ago, she had a night out with her hugely successful band, Chvrches, got a bit drunk and wrote an angry column for the Guardian entitled “ I will not accept online misogyny ”. Mayberry, who is on the cusp of a new solo career, talks softly and rapidly, with a raised eyebrow and a lot of dramatised little voices. She is good at characterising her former self, who fought around the issues of #MeToo five years before it became a movement. Last year she played a series of gigs with her new all-female backing band. Her front of house engineer, Paul Gallagher, also Chvrches’ FOH engineer, would mention if she’d played a particular venue before: “I’d say, I’ve never been here, Paul. Then I’d Google it, and there’s tiny, miserable-looking me from 2012.”

Less miserable at 36, Mayberry is in London for fashion week when we meet – the latest step in her tentative journey from lead singer in a mostly-male indie band to a more performative, dramatic self. When cerebral synth-pop trio Chvrches went viral in 2013 with the song The Mother We Share and went on to release four UK Top 10 albums, Mayberry became an accidental object lesson in women’s experience of the music industry at the height of Twitter. She got online abuse of a peculiarly possessive kind, ranging from accusations of hypocrisy if, as a feminist, she wore a very short skirt on stage, to rape and death threats; as a former journalist and law graduate, she could not help but broadcast and respond to it all, which made the trolls angrier.

“I was fixated with death,” she blinks. “You have that, when people tell you online that they’re going to kill you. It’s not normal to think about death and rape that much! It’s not good for your brain. Why is all the last Chvrches album obsessed with dying? [ Screen Violence was full of horror film imagery.] It’s an odd, existential grapple. So, maybe less internet for me, and more trying to live in reality?”

Reality is a tabby cat back home in Los Angeles with a bout of diarrhoea. Mayberry lives in north-east LA (“I visit the madness, but I do not live in the madness”), not too far from Silver Lake, which was once home to Moby’s vegan restaurant, now closed (“Well, maybe he shouldn’t have cracked on to an 18-year-old Natalie Portman !”). Her boyfriend has just called – it is 2am there – concerned about the pet’s diarrhoea, and asking her what to do. He is Sam Stewart, son of Dave Stewart, and they met when Chvrches were touring with his band Lo Moon in 2018. “He moved to LA when he was in his 20s,” Mayberry reflects. “He definitely has a good British, indie-boy, scrappy sensibility that you don’t get if you’ve grown up fully in LA. He’s a very pragmatic, kind, level-headed person, which I think is very helpful…”

It was Dave Stewart who told Mayberry, in 2017, that she was like Joan of Arc. He held her back after a songwriting session for Chvrches’ third album, and, sipping his 6pm martini, showed her a clip of Milla Jovovich giving a rousing speech in the 1999 film about the French martyr. “You could be that , but you don’t want to be,” he said, or words to that effect: “I can see it in the interviews, I can see it in the performances, you want to be this thing, but you’re not giving it 100%.”

Martin Doherty, Lauren Mayberry and Iain Cook in 2018.

It was, from the outside, completely inevitable that she would go solo (though Chvrches have not broken up, as she points out repeatedly: this is merely a hiatus). She seemed so different from her apparently laid-back bandmates Martin Doherty and Iain Cook: shouldering the media attention, writing the manifestos, holding the loudhailer. That self-possession, she says, was an illusion.

“I was a 24-year-old girl who had never worked in entertainment,” she says. “Martin and Iain had been in successful bands [Julia Thirteen and Aereogramme]. I’d paid money for a ticket to see them, and they knew what they were doing. They were a bit older than me, and I was playing a character. I wanted to be good enough to be in this zone with them, and I wanted to be smart. They felt like I was teaching them, but I didn’t know what the fuck I was doing.”

I last met Mayberry in Brooklyn five years ago, shortly after the Dave Stewart pep talk, for an interview about the band breaking the US. At the photoshoot, she stubbornly refused to be photographed on her own – the awkward demand of any woman in a band of men (she eventually stopped trying). We had a drink, and above the bar hung a novelty surfboard on which had been printed the famous pap shot of Britney Spears, angry and shaven-headed, mid breakdown. Mayberry was upset by it. “Don’t like that,” she murmured. “Don’t like that at all .”

“I feel like a lot of my work-life has been having to explain my thoughts or feelings to men,” she continues. “I have been in a lot of rooms with a lot of men in the past 12 years and I feel like a silent observer. My mind is doing two different things; I’m in the room being part of it, but I’m also trying to figure out how to get to my end point. There is so much navigating of male emotion. I can code switch pretty easily, but I don’t feel like any producers or crew guys we’ve worked with have to switch into my universe in the same way.”

Mayberry is still close to Cook and Doherty, but she came to notice how her personal music tastes were hidden in service of the band. “It’s a double life,” she says. “Who I am in the front of the tour bus is very different from who I am inside my headphones. With the films we watched, the music we listened to, I would put on a record that I know everyone would like. That’s how my brain has been socialised. I remember putting on a Yeah Yeah Yeahs CD at a house party at the end of high school, and dudes just ripping the piss out of it. From then on, it’s in the bedroom only. Sometimes I wonder how my brain would have developed if I’d spent more time around other women at that pretty formative time.”

Her new band features Madi Vogt on drums, Heather Nation on guitar and bass, and Renny Goh on keyboards. On tour last year, she walked on stage to Liza Minnelli’s Maybe This Time; she wore knee-high boots and lace tutus and had the words “Sorry Etc”, the title of a new song, eyelinered on her cheek (“I sold my soul to be one of the boys”). The album, as yet unnamed, will be released later this year: the three songs so far released are more pure pop than Chvrches, less icy and more colourful, though often 80s-influenced. The material was inspired by all the things Mayberry held back from her band on the assumption they wouldn’t “fit”: she saved lyrics, filled Pinterest boards with cabaret and performance art imagery, listened to the girl bands of her youth. “I love that performance art stuff that makes you feel separated from your normal self.”

There’s a song called Shame on the new album: “My favourite personal handbag to carry around,” she says. It was inspired by previous relationships, and the kind of men that she feels were branded into the romantic consciousness of girls who were teenagers in the early 2000s. Her romantic hero in those days was Troy, the character played by Ethan Hawke in 1994’s Reality Bites : “This floppy-haired guy who wears flannel and leather jackets and he’s in a band, and nobody understands Troy like she does…” Troy, or the self-involved man-musician, has haunted her life.

“Even when I watch the film now, I’m still horny, it’s still hot – but he’s incredibly rude and dismissive!” she says. “There’s a reason why Matty Healy is all over my TikTok algorithm, and everyone’s favourite Alex Turner persona is the era where he’s acting like a very cool arsehole. I’m hardwired to find that attractive. What I came to enjoy in men, there’s a built-in humiliation in a lot of that. I wasn’t conscious that it was a thing I chased. But I looked for it in nearly every relationship I’ve been in until now. ‘If only I try harder, or be kinder…’ There’s so much bending over backwards to keep somebody’s love. I thought that was just what dating men was like!”

Bands may not fascinate people the way they used to – “Obviously there will be no Take That-style helpline for us,” Mayberry says, “I’m not delusional” – but there’ll be plenty of Chvrches fans worried that this is it for the group. In the past, Mayberry’s reluctance to be photographed without her bandmates was emotional as well as political: “I didn’t want the guys to not like me!” Her hesitation about solo material came from the same fear of rocking the boat. She told them long before there was any music to speak of.

“I had spoken to Iain about it socially before we had a management/band it’s-on-the-agenda Zoom call about it,” she says. “I was conscious of wanting to tell them early in the process, so no one felt blindsided if it did actually turn into something.”

after newsletter promotion

Does she think it will?

“It feels like the industry is more open-minded now, but it still is what it is. I definitely was in the bunk on the bus at 2am Googling: ‘How old is Gwen Stefani?’”

W hen I last saw Mayberry, she admits today, she was lost. It looked, from the outside, like Chvrches had made it: the first time they toured the States they were sharing one room in Super 8 motels. By 2017 they were living in New York. But she was only there because Glasgow felt too small with the band’s growing fame. “Everybody in Glasgow was always really lovely about it, but in hindsight, I thought, you were having a mental health episode! I just wanted to hang out with my mates like it was 2011.”

She stuck out the US through Brexit, Trump and Covid. Her first solo single, released last year, was a ballad called Are You Awake? , co-written with Tobias Jesso Jr, who has worked with Adele and Harry Styles; a stylistic U-turn – the kind of song she had not written, at the piano, since her “sad teenage writing days” – it talks about transatlantic time differences, and missing weddings, babies and the town where, as she puts it, “all my proper, proper pals are”.

“Sometimes I think, ‘What a fun and thrilling and exciting experience this is’,” she says. “Then the next day I think, ‘You are a stupid fucking woman to think you can do this. It’s going to be so deeply humiliating, you’ve spent so much time doing this and you live 1,000 miles away from everybody you like. Why?’”

When Mayberry uses voice search to find TV shows, she has to switch from Glaswegian to the Queen’s English (“Ssssuuuccession!”) or the software won’t understand her. She recently had a vocal trainer in LA who tried to get rid of her Scottish inflection: she didn’t say anything at the time, but she didn’t go back. She started out as a drummer, and only ever saw her high, pure voice as something “utilitarian, like an instrument”, designed to blend with others: “I used to watch Gabrielle on Top of the Pops and dream of being one of the backing singers.”

There has always been a tension between her frontwoman tendencies – the Joan of Arc part – and the voice that analyses why anyone would want be at the front of a stage, and what it should look like. A new song, the extremely catchy Change Shapes , makes reference to “performative hypocrisy” – a very Mayberrian phrase.

“I’m very lucky that people associate Chvrches with certain politics,” she says, “but how people actually live versus what they present to you, I struggle with that. The public persona of me in the band is for the girls and the gays. ‘Onstage me’ is pretending I don’t take shit from anybody. But then I think, I took a lot of shit today, to be honest…”

She used to feel it was a pop star’s duty to say what they thought, but she has become less overtly political – I can’t get her on to Trump for love nor money, though she used to badmouth him at gigs and got a lot of heckling as a result. She won’t talk about Scottish politics – she just says that she recently spoke to someone in LA who swore the country was already independent. She doesn’t want to write columns any more, suggesting they were the product of booze and late-night emotion.

“I used to believe that saying something on the internet would make a difference and I could change things, and I don’t know if it ever did,” she says. “These days, I know the causes I support, the places I donate. Put your money where your mouth is, don’t be an asshole, align yourself with the right things.”

These days, she says, managers would look out for young artists trying to fight their corner on the internet. “If I could go back, I’d say, somebody else should be in charge of it, not me. They always say, ‘she calls out’ or ‘she takes a stand’. But for the most part, it’s just women asking to be left alone.”

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.
