El Chepe Train: My 2024 Guide to Copper Canyon by Train

  • by Nellie Huang

El Chepe train is lauded as one of the world’s most exciting rail trips. Here’s the ultimate Copper Canyon guide including the train route, schedule and more!

Copper Canyon in northern Mexico is one of the wildest and most ruggedly beautiful regions in the country. Located in the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains, Copper Canyon (also known as Barrancas del Cobre in Spanish) is actually a group of six distinct canyons that together make up a system that is larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon in the United States .

The best way to traverse the Copper Canyon is on the scenic Ferrocarril Chihuahua Pacífico, also known as “ el Chepe train “. Considered one of the greatest rail journeys in the world , El Chepe weaves through the ragged canyons, revealing stunning views of waterfalls, towering cliffs, and rugged ridges of the Sierra Madre Occidental.

As part of my research/writing work for Lonely Planet, I went on an epic Chepe train journey recently and took a deep dive into this largely under-explored part of Mexico. Any trip to Copper Canyon is an adventure, and one that I highly recommend to those who love veering off the beaten trail.

Traversing the high-atltitude mountains of northern Mexico, El Chepe train offers the opportunity to feast on some of the most dramatic landscapes in Mexico. Climbing from the Pacific Coast to the high Sierra Madre mountains, it snakes through the vast, rugged landscapes of Mexico’s largest state, Chihuahua.

This 656km track is a true engineering feat, boasting 37 bridges and 86 tunnels, and was completed after 60 years of construction in 1961. Not only is the railway impressive for its engineering prowess, but it also provides breathtaking views of the stunning canyons along the way.

Planning a trip on the Copper Canyon train can be tricky — it requires lots of research. In this article, I share details on which Copper Canyon train to choose, how to book the Copper Canyon train etc.

el chepe train - navigating the curves

Overall, the best time to visit the Copper Canyon is during the spring (March-May) or fall (September-November) when the weather is mild, with comfortable daytime highs around 20-25°C (68-77°F). I traveled the Copper Canyon in mid-November and the weather was only slightly chilly and there was hardly any foreign tourist.

It can get pretty cold in the winter months (December-February) with temperatures ranging from 0-20°C (32-68°F). This is the only spot in Mexico when it actually snows. So if you’re looking to have a white Christmas, this is the place to go! Even though I was there close to winter, the weather was glorious – with sunny skies and comfortable temperatures.

The summer months (June-August) are the hottest, with temperatures ranging from 25-35°C (77-95°F). I’d avoid the Mexican holidays such as Semana Santa (Easter) and Dia de Muertos ( Day of the Dead ), as many Mexicans travel around then.

TIP : It hardly gets crowded in the Copper Canyon , many people seem to be deterred from this region due to the narcos-related crime (more on that later). I barely saw any foreign tourists on my trip! If you’re looking to go off the beaten path, this is it.

How to Get to the Copper Canyon

The nearest major airports to the Copper Canyon are located in Chihuahua and Los Mochis . It depends on which direction of the Copper Canyon train you decide to travel; if you’re going eastwards, fly to Chihuahua; if you’re going westwards, start your trip in Los Mochis.

Both cities have international airports and are well connected to other major cities in Mexico such as Monterrey , Guadalajara and Mexico City. A round-trip flight from New York to Chihuahua costs around US$500 while domestic flights from Mexico City to Chihuahua or los Mochis cost no more than $100 return.

Search for Flights to Chihuahua.

TIP: I recommend starting your journey from Chihuahua (like I did) as the cowboy town is a lot more pleasant than Los Mochis and there are plenty of things to do in Chihuahua. Los Mochis on the other hand is an uninteresting, modern city with nothing worth seeing .

flying over chihuahua - el chepe train route

The US$65-million Creel International Airport has been under construction for years and is set to open in 2024. It was supposed to be completed in 2016, but disputes with local Tarahumara ejido owners have caused major delays.

While the Copper Canyon is the most roadless region in Mexico, the roads here are generally well-maintained and easy to navigate. But as the cartels control some areas here, it is important to exercise caution and take common-sense safety precautions while driving in Mexico.

If you don’t intend to take the Copper Canyon train, it’s best to rent a car from either Chihuahua or Los Mochis. The drive from Chihuahua is approximately 6 hours, and the drive from Los Mochis is approximately 4 hours. I recommend option for a 4WD if you plan to drive down to the canyon floor.

I always book my car rental from  Discover Cars  as they offer the best prices and excellent customer service. An  economy rental car in Chihuahua  costs around $325 for a whole week, which is  less than $50 a day .

There are several bus companies that operate regular services to the Copper Canyon from Chihuahua and Los Mochis. Search for buses here . Buses are cheaper, faster and more frequent than the Copper Canyon train — but you’ll be missing out one of the world’s coolest train journeys!

To explore the canyon-bottom villages like Urique and Batopilas, buses are the best way to go. The train only traverses on the canyon rim and not to the bottom, so you’ll need to catch the dusty, shared colectivos or buses to get there. They usually meet the trains when they arrive and leave only when full.

It is possible to reach the Copper Canyon from Baja California. There is a ferry service that crosses the Sea of Cortez to and from La Paz to Los Mochis (the nearby ferry terminal Topolobambo is just 30 minutes away). The ferry to/from Los Mochis ( Topolobambo ) takes around 8 hours and does not sail daily. Check the ferry’s web site for details of routes, schedules, prices and contact details.

The Copper Canyon train essentially runs between Creel and Los Mochis (and in the other direction). Creel is located in the Chihuahua highlands, while Los Mochis is on the Pacific Coast. You’ll be traversing the high-altitude mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, with every twist and turn of the train revealing dramatic landscapes.

It is important to know that there are actually two trains that run the Copper Canyon route:

  • Chepe Express Train  – This train is specifically for tourists making the Copper Canyon train tour. It runs from Creel to Los Mochis (and the other way).
  • Chepe Regional Train – This train is more catered to commuters and locals, although tourists can also take it. It goes from Chihuahua to Los Mochis (vice versa).

El Chepe Express runs a more direct route from Creel to Los Mochis (or vice versa), making just 4 stops along the way. El Chepe Regional starts in Chihuahua, before heading to Creel and ending in Los Mochis. It makes 15 stops so the whole journey is much longer. I will go into details about each train later on.

el chepe train route map

  • Mexico has no travel restrictions, and there’s no need for proof of vaccine or PCR tests on the plane. Anyone is welcomed to travel to Mexico.
  • However, I always recommend travelers to buy travel insurance, whether you’re traveling for a year or a week. These days, it is particularly important to have travel insurance that covers COVID-19. Read my travel insurance guide.
  • Safety Wing  is the most popular travel insurance company for COVID19-coverage. I use their  Nomad Insurance plan , which covers COVID-19 as any other illness as long as it was not contracted before your coverage start date.

You can actually take the train right through from Chihuahua to Los Mochis (or the other direction) in 10 hours — but the Copper Canyon is worth so much more of your time!

I spent a week on the Copper Canyon train , stopping at various points for 1-2 nights and then hopping back on again. It was a fantastic way to venture deep into the canyon, do some hiking, and get to know the indigenous Tarahumara people living here. (See my Copper Canyon itinerary. )

If you only have 2 days, I suggest stopping a night at Divisadero station and hopping back on the next day. Most people spend 5 days on the Copper Canyon train, making two stops (Divisadero and El Fuerte). I’ll talk in detail about what to do at each stop below.

el chepe train route

The Copper Canyon train itself has a good safety record, with no major accidents or incidents reported in recent years. The train is operated by Ferromex, one of Mexico’s largest railroad companies, and undergoes regular safety inspections.

In recent years, there have been isolated incidents of violence in the Copper Canyon region, mostly related to drug trafficking. Drug cartels have long used the remote mountains to plant illicit crops of marijuana and opium poppies.

In the 2000s, the cartels expanded into illegal logging on Raramuri lands, driving out or killing anyone who opposed them. At least a half dozen Raramuri environmental activists have been killed in Copper Canyon. The most recent incident happened in June 2022: two Jesuit priests and a tour guide were murdered in Cerocahui by the cartels.

To ensure the safety of tourists, the Mexican government and local tour operators have implemented a number of security measures, including increased police presence and surveillance along the train route. I personally felt safe on my Copper Canyon trip and didn’t encounter anything risky.

taking el chepe train

Considering how close the Copper Canyon is to the US border, I was surprised to see very few foreign travelers. Sadly many foreigners are deterred from traveling around northern Mexico because of the narcos-related crime that plague the region. Most of the violence is still concentrated around the border areas; I personally didn’t feel unsafe at all here.

When I traveled Copper Canyon in November, the trains were mostly full. There are many Mexican tourists exploring the area, with a good mix of seniors and multi-generational families. Mexicans in general are so friendly and outgoing; I met many incredible people on the journey — like the trio of ladies from Mexico City who warmly invited me to join them for dinner; the group of older gentlemen whom I watched the sunrise with; and the family who shared with me tips from Durango.

el chepe train schedule - view from hotel divisadero barrancas

I’m a travel writer and seasoned traveler — but planning out the Copper Canyon train trip was tricky even for me. Because different trains run on different days and times, and there are over 15 stations in the route (which one to pick?!), it takes time and effort to draw out a plan and itinerary.

That’s why so many people prefer to travel on a Copper Canyon tour where all the logistics are taken care of. I traveled independently so I don’t have any personal experience to speak of here; these are what I’ve found from research.

  • Mexico Copper Canyon Tours runs well-priced tours that include all your train tickets, meals, tours and accommodation. They have pretty good reviews. Prices start at US$678 for a 5-day trip.
  • Copper Canyon Adventures seem to be a more established tour operator with a wide range of tours to choose from, though their tours are more expensive. They also do custom, private tours.
  • Chepe Explora is an in-house agency from El Chepe who can draw up itineraries for you and offer a full package that include train tickets and hotels.

Which Copper Canyon Train to Take?

The main differences between the two trains are the onboard facilities, the stations they service, the schedule, and of course the price. The best way to make the most of your time in Copper Canyon is to take a combination of different trains.

Most foreign tourists take the Chepe Express as it’s the much easier to book Express tickets online. It’s also faster than Chepe Regional as it doesn’t stop as often. Chepe Express stops at most of the must-sees, so you won’t be missing out if you just take the Express.

They run on different days, so essentially you should decide which train to take based on your schedule. But in terms of comfort level and amenities, there really isn’t that much of a difference between the two. I found both to be comfortable and well designed.

Here are the main differences:

Duration  – A direct journey takes 10 hours, without stopping.

Stops  –  There are 4 stops on this route and you can stop at any, and book and pay for individual legs.

Booking – Tickets can be easily booked online, on the Chepe website . It’s best to book in advance as they do fill up.

Facilities  – This high-end train has the Urike restaurant cabin, with a menu designed by renowned chef Daniel Ovadía. Try local delicacies such as chile relleno (stuffed pepper), the tamale de chayote, or the poblano chili soup. Meals are surprisingly not too expensive (around 200-300 MXN or $10-15 per dish).

el chepe train - which train to take

The Regional train takes longer as it makes more stop. It is also cheaper, but you can only buy tickets either by email/phone or in person at the train station. The train itself is still comfortable and well-equipped with a restaurant and rest rooms.

Duration  – A direct journey takes 16 hours, but the trains are often delayed and can take much longer.

Stops  – There are 15 stops along the journey and you can hop off and on, but you need to book for individual legs.

Booking  – Regional tickets can only be booked by email ( [email protected] ) or from the ticket counter at either Chihuahua or Los Mochis station (in advance is recommended).

Facilities  – The tourist class cabins have a dining room, while the economy class has a canteen; both serve simple food and snacks.

El Chepe Train Prices

In general, it’s not cheap to ride the Copper Canyon train; but it can be done on a budget if you plan well. While the prices are high, the trains are just as comfortable as those in the US and Europe. However, they aren’t quite as punctual and reliable and both trains often experience delays.

I took the Chepe Express (tourist class) mainly and the Chepe Regional (tourist class) twice, and honestly didn’t see a lot of differences between the two in terms of comfort level — the main difference was the price. For instance, to go from Creel to Divisadero, it costs 1,063 MXN (US$60) on the Chepe Express, and 662 MXN (US$38).

There are three different classes on the Chepe Express. These are prices for each leg (from one stop to the next) and straight-through from the first to the last stop.

  • Tourist Class: each leg 1,063 MXN (US$60) or end-to-end for 2,598 MXN (US$148)
  • Executive Class: each leg 1,306 MXN ($74) or end-to-end 3,374 MXN ($192)
  • First Class*: each leg 1,700 MXN ($97) or 4,820 pesos ($274) [First Class passengers have access to an open-air viewing carriage with panoramic views.]

TIP: Although the cost of each leg is around US$60-100, if you book 3/4 legs, the total will come up to be around the same price as an end-to-end journey.

There are two classes on the Chepe Regional, though technically tourists are only allowed on the tourist class. These are prices for the entire, direct journey with no stops. [You can see the price for each leg in the photo below.]

  • Tourist Class: 1,970 pesos ($112)
  • Economy Class: 1,034 pesos ($59)

el chepe train prices

Both the Chepe Express and Regional trains are relatively comfortable (thou dated), with air-conditioning and proper cushion, reclinable seats. There’s plenty of luggage storage space in each cabin, as well as overhead compartments for your daypack. Both trains have restrooms in each cabin, and restaurant cabins.

If you opt for the first class seats on the Chepe Express, you’ll have access to a bar carriage with panoramic views. One thing to note: the Express train doesn’t allow passengers to walk from one cabin to another; while the Regional train allows you to stand in the open area between carriages (great spot for photography).

copper canyon railway

You can choose to go either westwards (Creel to Los Mochis) or eastwards (Los Mochis to Creel) — honestly the views you see are the same. I traveled westwards, Creel to Los Mochis , using a combination of Chepe Express and Regional trains.

Most people choose to travel eastwards , from Los Mochis to Creel, as the train schedule allows you to see the most scenic leg of the journey – between El Fuerte and Bahuichivo – in daylight. I planned my Copper Canyon itinerary such a way that I still managed to see that gorgeous leg in daylight.

I liked going in this direction as the train goes from the Chihuahua highlands up into the high-altitude mountains before descending to the Pacific coast. In the first leg, you’re basically trundling through pine forests and higher into the mountains. Once you’re past Divisadero, the train is teetering on the cusp of the Copper Canyon. There’s an exciting build-up before the train whizzes past the most dramatic landscapes a few hours after passing Bahuichivo.

TIP : If you choose the westbound train , make sure to book a seat on the LEFT side for the best views. Similarly, book the right side on the eastbound train.

El Chepe Train Schedule 2024

The Chepe Express runs from Creel – Los Mochis on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays (leaving at 8am); from Los Mochis to Creel on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (leaving at 8am). During the low season, the train doesn’t run Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The Chepe Regional train runs Chihuahua – Los Mochis on Wednesdays and Saturdays (leaving at 7am); and Los Mochis – Chihuahua on Thursdays and Sundays (leaving at 6am).

It’s important to know that El Chepe trains change their schedule often, so please check on the official site before planning your trip. The low season runs from Jan 11- March 1, May 1 – June 30, and Sept 1 and Nov 30.

C hepe Express Schedule

TIP: It’s important to know you cannot buy an “open” ticket. You must specify what dates and times you intend to travel. The sale of tickets is tightly controlled to ensure safety for all passengers, so work out your itinerary and stick with it.

chepe train tickets

Since 2022, you can book Chepe Express train tickets online, make payment on their system, and get an immediate confirmation. Ignore what some outdated sites say – you no longer need to email and send your credit card details online.

Head straight to chepe.mx and click on ‘Book Train’. Choose the class of ticket you want and select your origin and destination, and date of travel. The system only shows dates when the train runs. You can add more legs by clicking ‘Add Stop’. Once you fill up the form with your name, email address etc and make payment, you’ll receive your ticket in your email.

You can only book Regional tickets by email ( [email protected] ) or from the ticket counter at either Chihuahua or Los Mochis station (in advance is recommended). I bought my Regional ticket in Chihuahua 2 days in advance of my trip.

TIP: I booked my Chepe Express tickets just 2 weeks before my trip started and some trains were full. I suggest booking earlier to make sure you get the train and the seats you want.

divisadero - adventure park - copper canyon activities

It can be tricky to plan out your Copper Canyon train itinerary due to the train schedule as both trains run on limited days. I suggest planning out your itinerary before booking your flights to your starting point.

At the start of my train journey, I spent 3 days in Chihuahua before taking the bus to Creel . I then boarded my first Chepe train in Creel, then I spent a night in Divisadero, 2 nights in Urique and 2 nights in El Fuerte, before ended the journey in Los Mochis.

Was my itinerary perfect? No, but it was the best plan I could have come up with considering the time constraint. I would have preferred to spend 1 more night in Divisadero and 1 less night in El Fuerte — but the train schedule didn’t allow for that. That said, 1 week on the Chepe train was the perfect amount of time to explore the Copper Canyon and experience the rail journey.

how to book chepe train tickets - sunrise at divisadero

Read my Copper Canyon itinerary for full details. Here’s a summary of it:

Day 1 Saturday: Creel – Divisadero (Chepe Regional)

Day 2 Sunday: Divisadero – Bahuichivo (Chepe Express) + Bus to Urique

Day 3 Monday: Stay overnight in Urique

Day 4 Tuesday: Bahuichivo – El Fuerte (Chepe Express)

Day 5 Wednesday: Stay overnight in El Fuerte

Day 6 Thursday: El Fuerte – Los Mochis (Chepe Express)

Day 7 Friday : Stay overnight in Los Mochis

divisadero sunrise

In my opinion, the most scenic leg of the train journey is from Bahuichivo to El Fuerte , as the train hugs the sides of the steep canyons and makes a spectacular zigzag descent into a tunnel above Témoris.

A must-stop along the entire Copper Canyon train is Divisadero , where the train halts for 15 minutes and allows you to hop off and stare into the actual Copper Canyon from a viewpoint next to the station. Stay overnight at a canyon-edge hotel at Divisadero so you can hike the canyon-rim trail to the nearby Parque de Aventura Barrancas del Cobre.

The next most exciting stop is Creel , a charming mountain town with a picturesque location and sprinkled with lots of interesting natural sights. There are many things to in Creel to keep you busy for two nights, so I highly recommend arriving a few days before your Copper Canyon train starts to have time to explore.

Best Copper Canyon Train Stops

As the main hub for Copper Canyon tours , Creel is a charming mountain town with lots of restaurants and stores. The town is home to several indigenous communities, including the Tarahumara people (known by Mexicans as Rarámuri, which means ‘those who run fast’), who have inhabited the region for centuries. Read my Creel travel guide .

Most of the coolest attractions in Creel are in the surrounding mountains, which you can easily see in a loop day trip (starting at the Valley of the Frogs and ending at Lake Arareko). If you have more than a day here, make sure to do a day trip to Cascade de Basaseachi .

Best Things to Do in Creel:

  • Museo Tarahumara — an excellent spot to learn about the Tarahumara culture and history.
  • Valle de las Ranas (Valley of the Frogs) and Valle de los Hongos (Valley of the Mushrooms) — groups of natural rock formations resembling frogs and mushrooms.
  • Valley of the Monk — surreal rock formations that tower over the valley, resembling a group of hooded monks.
  • Aguas Termales Rekowata Hike or bike to these glorious hot springs deep in the wilderness. Book your day trip here.
  • Cascada de Basaseachi — Mexico’s highest full-time waterfall tumbles 246m to the azure pools below, where you can swim. Book your day trip.

valley of the monks - things to do in copper canyon

If you only have time for one stop on your Chepe train journey, make it Divisadero , as it’s perfectly poised on the canyon rim, at an altitude of around 2,400 meters (7,800 feet). The trains stop here for at least 15 minutes, so even if you’re not spending a night here, you have time to hop off and walk to the viewpoint just steps from the train tracks.

The Parque de Aventuras Barrancas del Cobre is an easy 1.5km walk from the station (along a gorgeous canyon-rim trail). The adventure park plays host to the ZipRider, the world’s second-longest zip-line, spanning a remarkable 2.5km in length. With seven lines available, you can soar through the air from an altitude of 2400m down to Mesón de Bacajípare where you can catch a cable car.

Around 3.3km away from Divisadero is a small town called Areponápuchi (locals call it Arepo), where you’ll find more accommodation. Arepo is served by the Posada Barrancas station, but only the Chepe Regional train stops here. If you’re taking the Chepe Express, catch a local bus to Arepo from Divisadero station.

Luxury: Hotel Divisadero Barrancas

This is the ONLY hotel in Divisadero and it’s right outside the train station. I stayed here and found the rooms to be outdated and overpriced, but the spectacular views right outside my window was priceless. They run free guided hikes for guests, as well as other activities like quad-biking and horseback riding. Check rates.

The next stop on the Copper Canyon train route, Bahuichivo, is a small village consisting of just a few homes, hotels, and a church. From here, I suggest continuing onto Urique, a village located at the bottom of the deepest canyon and along the west bank of the Rio Urique. Tthe journey down the treacherous but scenic descent can take up to 3.5 hours on a local bus. To get the bus, make arrangements with your hotel in Urique.

Urique is an ideal base for hiking, with easy day hikes available along the riverside dirt road. Choose to walk 7km upriver to the next village of Guadalupe Coronado or hike 4km downstream to Guapalaina, where a beautiful trail leads to the azure natural pool, Charco Verde. Though swimming is not permitted as the water is consumed by the local communities, it is still a great trek past several Tarahumara homes and up the canyon walls.

I stayed at this newish, riverfront hotel and really enjoyed the pleasant location. It has a nice outdoor pool, and spacious brick-walled rooms with rustic decor and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Check rates here.

El Fuerte, where the legendary Zorro was born, is the second last stop on the Copper Canyon route and close to the Sinaloan coast. El Fuerte, meaning “the fort” in Spanish, was once a fort. While the original fort is no longer there, a replica has been built on the hill where it once stood. The replica also houses a museum showcasing the history of the city and offers good views of the town and river from the top.

An excellent day trip to do from El Fuerte is a boat trip along Río Fuerte , a top birding destination. You can easily spot kingfishers, ospreys, and flycatchers by the riverbank. I booked my boat tour that included a hike to Cerro de la Máscara (Hill of Mask), where over 300 petroglyphs are found. These 2000-year-old engravings were created by the ancient Yoremes (Mayos) natives.

Budget: Hotel El Fuerte

Located next to the fort museum, this colorful hacienda-style hotel has seen better days, but offers great value for money with its big rooms. The beautiful patio and lounge area definitely make this a great spot to stay. Check rates here.

Midrange: Mansion Serrano Hotel

This hotel is located just a few blocks from El Fuerte’s main square and it’s housed within a historical complex. Rooms are outdated but spacious and comfortable. I stayed here and wouldn’t mind staying here again. Check rates here.

Hotel Posada Del Hidalgo

This charming hotel is located in a historic building in the heart of El Fuerte’s colonial district. It offers comfortable, air-conditioned rooms with traditional Mexican decor. The hotel also has a courtyard with a swimming pool and a restaurant that serves regional cuisine. Check rates here.

el fuerte, copper canyon

The terminus of the Copper Canyon train route, Los Mochis, is a sprawling modern city in Sinaloa. It’s honestly nothing to write home about, without many interesting historical attractions or sights. I spent 2 nights in Los Mochis and kinda wish I had left earlier. I would suggest skipping this town and catching your flight home from here right after the train.

los mochis - end of chepe train

Technically, no food is allowed on any of the Copper Canyon trains. But I have seen people snacking and chowing on tamales. All the trains have dining cabins or canteens with plenty of snacks and food. For the restaurant cabins, the waiters come around to take your order in advance. It’s pretty organized and prices are surprisingly affordable.

Only some stations have food options right at the platform. Divisadero actually has a big food market steps from the train tracks, with lots of vendors serving up chile relleno , enchiladas and tacos on their sizzling komal . Creel has an actual restaurant (Restaurante el Tungar) at the train station with great soups and quesadillas.

street market at divisadero

Regardless of when you visit Copper Canyon, pack lots of layers as it can get really sunny in the day and chilly at night. If you’re taking the Copper Canyon train in winter, you’ll definitely need a proper winter jacket with thermals and thick socks. Make sure you pack a wide-rimmed hat, lots of water, and sunscreen. I was there in November and kept warm with just my down jacket, fleece and hiking pants.

  • Down jacket
  • Merino tee or thermals
  • Hiking pants
  • Hiking shoes
  • Hiking t-shirt
  • Lightweight daypack
  • Sunscreen  – SFP50+ if possible
  • Wide-rimmed hat
  • Water bottle  (2 liters)

what to pack for chepe train

  • I’ve said this many times: book your Chepe Express tickets well in advance if you want to get the best seats.
  • If you’re planning to take the Chepe Regional, buy your tickets at the station as soon as you get to Chihuahua and Los Mochis.
  • Be sure to get to the platform about 30 minutes early, but also be prepared for delays.
  • Plan a stop in Divisadero and spend the night at the canyon-rim Hotel Divisaderos Barrancas for spectacular views.
  • Schedule in a few days at Creel because it’s at the start (or end) of the Chepe train journey and there are plenty of things to do in Creel .
  • Brush up on your Spanish; knowing some basic phrases can go a long way when interacting with Mexican travelers onboard the Copper Canyon train.

Thank you so much for current complete chepe info. Many sites are only express info, including el chepe official site. Other blog writers seem unaware that there are two different trains. So far I have had no luck trying to book an express ticket – I get no response at any official e address. I plan to be there mid- October. It will be low season so can I buy tickets in chihuahua the day before? Thanks, Lea

copper canyon mexico train tours

hi Lea! Thanks for the kind words! Yes there have been lots of changes to the Chepe train routes/schedules/services after COVID. I was there in late 2022 so my info is still pretty updated.

You can actually book an Express ticket directly on the website — have you tried here: https://chepe.mx/reservaciones/express/seleccionar ? Just put in your travel date, which stops you want to travel from/to, and pick your seat. You can pay by credit card and get a confirmation right away.

If you want to take the Chepe Regional, then yes you can just book the tickets in Chihuahua. I bought my tickets 2 days before traveling at the train station.

Hope this helps! 🙂

Having now spent a year and a half worth of days exploring the Sierra Tarahumara, I can share that your blog was easily the most relevant and accurate for anyone looking to ride the Chepe. Of course of bunch I might add but good stuff. You only had one miss – Gorditas – this is the pleasure to enjoy off the Divisadero platform. Entre Amigos is awesome too. The Ultra Caballo Blanco is in March, a famous Endurance Running event

Hi, wonderful info! I want to buy a gift certificate as a gift for the train. Is there anyway to contact someone about this by phone? Thank you Heide

hi Heide, you can reach them on this number in Mexico: 1 800 1224 373. But I think it’ll be easier to email them at [email protected] or fill up this contact form: https://chepe.mx/contactanos/ .

Hi Nellie, A little closer to trip date and two questions, if you can help. I now have long covid brain scramble and chepe is confusing. Must I buy part of my trip on the express? This is stated somewhere. You mention that the canyon was not busy with tourists but the express was sold out. Would this be true for October? Thank you.

hi Lea, you can take only the Chepe Express train if you like or only the Regional, or as most people do, a combo of Chepe Express and Regional. Only the Chepe Express train tickets can be booked online. The Chepe Regional tickets have to be bought in person or by phone/email.

Sorry to have confused you! I’d meant that the trains are busy with tourists, but not foreign tourists. They’re mainly Mexican tourists. When I tried booking tickets in November, one or two of the Chepe Express trains were already full. I’d recommend booking the Chepe Express trains online now if you can.

If it’s easier, check my itinerary ( https://mexicotravel.blog/copper-canyon-mexico-10-day-itinerary/ ) and you can book the exact same trains I did.

Hello again, Can you use u.s. dollars to pay in person for train tickets? Are u.s. dollars accepted in general for small and large purchases? Thank you. Lea

hi Lea, I used my credit card to pay for the train tickets in person, but I think they accept US dollars. To be safe, I would get some Mexican pesos at the airport or hotel before going to the train station. In Mexico, you can never be sure if the internet is working or if something is broken so always have pesos with you.

Thank you, Nellie. I had read that foreign tourists must buy the longest segment of a total trip on the express. I will now happily go on the regional.

I am going to take the Copper Canyon tour with Caravan later his month. I would like to print your guide as a reference to take with me but it is protected.

hi Joe, I’m afraid I don’t have the printing feature yet. I work really hard on providing free content to readers, and I make a living from readers scrolling on my site and reading the articles. Perhaps you could bookmark my page and refer to it on your phone or iPad while you are traveling? 🙂

copper canyon mexico train tours

Hi Nellie. Thanks for your great blog. I am a bit confused by this tip from your itinerary post:

TIP: Since you’re traveling on the eastbound train, make sure to book a seat on the RIGHT side for the best views. If you’re traveling the other direction (from Los Mochis to Chihuahua), book a seat on the left side.

You have said sit on the right side on the Eastbound train – meaning Los Mochis to Chihuahua, and then said “…..other direction….” – wouldn’t that be Chihuahua to Los Mochis Westbound train?

thanks for any clarification

hi Catherine, yes you’re right! Sorry for the mistake, I’ll amend it. The other direction (westbound) is Chihuahua to Los Mochis.

copper canyon mexico train tours

Hey! Thank you for your very detailed explanation! You already helped me a lot planning my trip in January.

I just have one question. Is it also possible to do large parts of the canyon by bus? I thought about just taking the first leg until divisadero of el chepe. And then explore the canyon and making my way to chihuahua by normal public transport as I would like to be more independent from the very confusing and arrythmic train schedule.

Thanks before hand!

Hi Timo, yes for sure! All the stops along the Chepe train route are connected by bus. In fact most locals take the bus to commute in and out of their villages as it’s cheaper and leaves more regularly. I used the bus to get to Urique as well as from El Fuerte to Los Mochis. They’re reliable and affordable.

copper canyon mexico train tours

Hey Nellie,

Thanks for the great blog article–super informative. I saw you mentioned using bus and the link is very useful. I am debating between staying in Bahuichivo vs. Divisario as one stop in the middle. I see the link shows one daily bus from Divisario to Creel but it does not have a dropdown option for Bahuichivo. Is there a bus from Bahuichivo to Creel at all?–searching the web in English it was hard to find bus schedule along the copper canyon. I am also slightly worried that the adventure park area is a bit too artificial for hiking, though it seems the logistics for stopping and hiking in Bahuichivo is a bit more complicated & requires more time as Urique might be the right place to be–would you say that is the case?

Thanks so much!

hi Brandon! Thanks for the kind words! If you’re making only one stop, I’d suggest Divisadero as hiking trails are so accessible right from the train station and hotel. I stayed at the Hotel Divisadero Barrancas and joined a few free guided hikes with them. The hike to a nearby Tarahumara cave was particularly interesting and the views along the way were spectacular. If you’re an experienced hiker, you can definitely do hikes on your own around the area and on the canyon rim. Yes the adventure park is artificial but beyond that there’s plenty of wilderness in the Divisadero area to explore.

As for buses to Bahuichivo, they leave regularly, but they’re local buses so you won’t be able to find the schedule online. Even if you miss the bus, there are often colectivos along the way. It’s almost amazing how you can find local transport everywhere in Mexico, even in the rural mountains of the Copper Canyon.

Urique is at the bottom of the canyon and it takes 4hours on a colectivo to navigate the sharp, hairpin bends to get there. It’s a long, dusty drive. You’ll need to liase with the hotel you’re staying in Urique to make sure the colectivo picks you up. It’s easy to go hiking on your own there, but the scenery is not quite as dramatic as it is on the canyon rim.

I hope this helps! Regards, Nellie

Thank you for the helpful information, Nellie! I was able to finalize the itinerary.

copper canyon mexico train tours

Hello, I use a manual wheelchair, but I can also walk. Can I assume the train is not wheelchair accessible?

hi Cyndi, thanks for dropping in! I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t think the train is wheelchair accessible. It might be wise to email them (I included their email address above). Nonetheless, the train staff (especially on the Chepe Express) are very helpful and will probably help bring your wheelchair in.

copper canyon mexico train tours

Hi Nellie Looks like the Chjepe Express has changed from Thursday to Friday leaving Creel – from chepe website: 8:00 a.m. Departure from Creel (Tuesday, Friday and Sunday) 4:40 p.m. Arrive in Los Mochis. Regards Dean

We don't do beaches.

Well maybe we do beaches--if they are along the river at the bottom of Copper Canyon or perhaps the remote sandy ones of Oaxaca. What we do every trip is the wonder of the richest of Mexico's cultural wonders. The food, history, people, and relaxing vibe of Merida, Oaxaca, Puebla, Copper Canyon, Chiapas, the monarch butterfly areas, and the wine and sea breezes of Baja California.Get there with us--the trip of a lifetime.

The Authentic Way.

We don't really do tours. We create experiences. And we serve travelers (not just tourists)--people who want to deeply experience real Mexico. The groups are always small. The guides are skilled, fun, and keep things moving. We leave time to relax and encourage you to explore on your own. Dave is a born traveler--he travels each area often and works with you to create a trip that fits with your interests.

Special Mexico Trips.

We offer Oaxaca for Day of the Dead. Our wine trips to Baja are perfect for foodies. The Monarch reserve trips (Dec -Mar) can be combined with Puebla and Mexico City. We will connect runners to 5K, 10K or Marathon events around Mexico. Our connection to whale and whale shark trips on the Sea of Cortez will fit with Copper Canyon or other Mexico journeys.

There are two trains to Copper Canyon

Train to Copper Canyon

Before getting in detail about the best stops in the train to Copper Canyon it is important to know that there are two trains that cross the Copper Canyon route:

  • Chepe Express Train – This train is specifically for tourists making the Copper Canyon train tour.
  • Chepe Regional Train – This train is specifically for commuters, although tourists can also get up.

If you want to know more about the differences between Chepe Express train and Chepe Regional train we have written a specific post for that:  Chepe Express vs Chepe Regional Train

The train to Copper Canyon runs from Chihuahua to Los Mochis to travel the entire route or the other way around. This magnificent railway winds through breathtaking scenery above 8,000 feet to sea level, with 87 tunnels and 36 bridges, providing the ideal environment for a thrilling Copper Canyon train trip.

Copper Canyon Train Ride Itinerary starting from Chihuahua

The tour to Copper Canyon can be travelled in either direction, from Chihuahua to Los Mochis, or vice versa. Creel and El Fuerte are little towns further along the railway towards the center of Copper Canyon from each end, and are alternative starting sites to do the Copper Canyon train tour. This article is based on the Copper Canyon tour starting in Chihuahua and ending in Los Mochis.

It is also more common to do the train to Copper Canyon route starting in Chihuahua because Chihuahua has a much bigger airport than Los Mochis. So to people searching Copper Canyon tours from USA it is almost always more convenient to start in Chihuahua.

American and Canadian citizens mostly search for Copper Canyon tours from El Paso, Copper Canyon tours from Tuxcon and Copper Canyon tours from Phoenix. All of them almost always start in Chihuahua, although we sometimes recommend starting in Los Mochis.

Chihuahua, the starting point of the train to Copper Canyon

It is recommended spending at least a full day in Chihuahua. This city in the Mexican desert is known for its historic importance and it is an interesting city to visit. Cowboy boots, hats, and shirts are sold in a variety of colors and styles in every corner.

There is also a good chance you’ll see Mexican cowboys strolling down the street on horseback. Chihuahua’s revolutionary roots and delicious burritos will surely enchant you.

If you prefer to travel in the opposite direction, it is possible. You can check all current available itineraries by clicking in the tours section in the top of this page.

Food in Chihuahua is delicious, the specialty is cow meat and burritos. Do not miss them! It is also recently the birthplace of an area of wine production that has won international awards.

Chihuahua to Creel

Normally your tour will start one day before in Chihuahua. You will need to fly form a mayor airport in the US and probably will do a stop in Mexico City. We will not talk a lot about Chihuahua and we will concentrate on the train to Copper Canyon.

Arrive into Creel

To arrive to Creel with the train to Copper Canyon you will need to take the Chepe Regional. There are two trains that run through Copper Canyon:

  • Chepe Express – Specially for tourists
  • Chepe Regional – More for commuters.

We have a fantastic article explaining the main differences between these two trains to Copper Canyon that you can read here:  Chepe Express vs Chepe Regional Train

The main difference is that Chepe Express is a newer and more luxurious train thought for tourists and that Chepe Regional is an older train thought for commuters. Chepe Regional Runs from Chihuahua to Los Mochis and Chepe Express only runs from Los Mochis to Creel.

It is not easy to buy the Chepe Regional or the Chepe Express train tickets. We recommend doing it through an agency such as us. The main reason is that the official website of Chepe Express does not work properly and the call center never answers the phone.

And you need to book beforehand, there is a big risk of not finding tickets if you go directly to the train the day of your tour.

Explore Creel and surroundings

Cusarare Creel

Creel is the first mind-blowing stop of the train to Copper Canyon. Stroll through Creel’s modest town center. Begin your journey in the charming main plaza or square, where Tarahumara women sell colorful fabrics hung over low fences.

The Tarahumara are a tribe of ancient people who live in caves and wood houses throughout the Copper Canyon and are still partially nomadic. They are known in the area as Rarámuri and are noted for their long-distance running abilities.

Christopher McDougall’s famous book Born to Run : A Hidden Tribe, Super athletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen tells more about them.

After leaving the square, go down Creel’s colorful main street, which runs parallel to the railway. The street is lined with hotels, restaurants, cafes, and shops, as well as a few of tour companies that offer excursions of the canyon and its environs. Note that normally all the tours to Copper Canyon that we offer include excursions and free time (depending of the itinerary).

Although Creel itself does not have much to offer in terms of attractions, the surrounding area does. There are several options nearby that are ideal for a single full day in Creel.

A circle in the forested hills and slopes of San Ignacio Arareko overlooking Creel is one possibility. This 20,000-hectare plot of land is managed by a Rarámuri village as a community initiative.

To perform the same loop without trekking, rent a bicycle or arrange a guided horse ride from town. If you prefer to go with a local guide, your lodging should be able to connect you with one.

We recommend doing all the following activities with a tour guide. It is not convenient to do it on your own.

The Caves of the Tarahumaras

Tarahumara Train to Copper Canyon

There are many caves of Tarahumaras that you can visit such as “La Casa de Petra” and “La Cueva de San Sebastian”. These are examples of the classic Rarámuri cave homes that may be found on the Copper Canyon train route. You can explore the cave and possibly purchase handicrafts manufactured inside. Throughout your journey, you will come across several Rarámuri families, all of whom were really welcoming.

Valle de las Ranas and Valle de los Hongos

Valle de las Ranas (Valley of the Frogs) and Valle de los Hongos are a few kilometres further along the trail, around 5 kilometres outside of Creel (Valley of the Mushrooms). These are groups of organic rock formations that [vaguely] resemble frogs and mushrooms, as the names suggest. Rarámuri women and children set up camp for the day on the lowest level surfaces of the rocks to sell their handicrafts and supplement their livelihood.

San Ignacio Mision

The 18th century San Ignacio Misson is located to the left of the frog and mushroom rocks. This little church, built by Jesuits, is still used by Rarámuri people to worship. Take a short peek inside, but beware of the small children who will try to sell you items by saying “compras, compras” (“you purchase, you buy”).

A tiny shop behind the Mission sells drinks and snacks from a friendly Rarámuri lady. Take them to a nearby basketball court to get some shade and get out of the sun. You might even get to see some local kids shooting hoops — a wonderful glimpse into valley life.

Lake Arareko

Proceed to Lake Arareko after some rest and refreshment. It’s another 5 kilometres (10 kilometres total) from Creel, so bring plenty of water and avoid going off-piste.

The peaceful u-shaped Arareko Lake is nestled among aromatic woods and makes for a lovely picnic place. It isn’t particularly impressive in terms of lakes, but it is tranquil and makes for a pleasant area to rest after your hike. For 60 pesos, you can rent a rowing boat to paddle around the core island’s rock formations after lunch.

Valle de Los Monjes

Because of its phallic rock formations, the Rarámuri dubbed it Valle de Bisabirachi (Valley of the Erect Penises). The Spanish dubbed it Valley of the Monks because they thought it was more suitable. This is the most impressive valley of all.

Copper Canyon Train Route Valle de los Monjes

Creel to Divisadero/ Posada Barrancas

The time to start your tour will be determined by which El Chepe train you take from Creel. But from this point you will most probably take the Chepe Express that departs from Creel at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

This section of your Copper Canyon train excursion will be the shortest. From Creel, it takes roughly 1.5 hours to go to Divisadero, and another ten minutes to get to Posada Barrancas.

For the first hour, there isn’t much to see because it’s mostly just a continuation of the pine-covered hilly countryside from Chihuahua to Creel.

After about an hour, the view begins to change as the country becomes more rough and the valleys become deeper. The train will then arrive at Divisadero station, from where you will be in the most mind-blowing part of Copper Canyon.

This is the most important stop of the train to Copper Canyon. All tours stop in this place and here you will find two of the most amazing attractions of all the tours to Copper Canyon:

  • Hotel Mirador
  • Copper Canyon Adventure Park

Hotel Mirador is a hotel that is build in the edge of a cliff. All the rooms of this hotel have a private terrace from where you can see the sunset and the views of the Copper Canyon.

Front Hotel Mirador Copper Canyon Barrancas del Cobre

Copper Canyon Adventure Park is the place where the largest ziplines of all Latin America are. The Zip Ridder is a 2.5 kilometer zipline that crosses from canyon to canyon. There are also other adventure experiences such as hanging bridges and the “via ferrata”.

The main activities are a zip line course, a high ropes course with rappelling and rock climbing, a cable car, a tree-top walk with ten suspension bridges, cycling, horseback riding, trekking, and children’s activities are among the other activities available. There’s a glass-walled café or various seats along the pathways where you may relax and take in your surroundings.

Zip Line Circuit Copper Canyon Adventure Park

Divisadero and Posada Barrancas View

When you initially arrive at Divisadero station, you won’t notice it, but this is where you’ll find one of the greatest views of the train to Copper Canyon. Every Chepe train, regardless of class, makes a 20-minute stop in Divisadero. This allows travelers who aren’t staying the night to take in the breathtaking scenery.

Posada Barrancas to Basaseachi

From Posada Barrancas or Divisadero you will be heading to Basaseachi. This stop is also an amazing place to spend at least a night. Near Basaseachi is a little town called Cerocahui. Basaseachi is the fourth mind-blowing stop of the train to Copper Canyon.

In our tours to Copper Canyon we offer our clients lodging at Mision Cerocahui, this hotel is in the middle of the mountains and has a small vineyard. All the meals are included and it is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the peace of nature.

Near Cerocahui is a place called “Cerro del Gallego” translated in english is “Hill of Gallego”. From this place you will enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the train to Copper Canyon and of your life. From Cerro del Gallego you will see the Urique Canyon, which is one of the most impressive canyons of all the Copper Canyon train route.

Urique Canyon

Copper Canyon Train from Basaseachi to El Fuerte

The train to El Fuerte will take roughly 4 hours 30 minutes. El Fuerte is a fantastic place to spend at least one night after a Copper Canyon excursion.

This is the part of the train to Copper Canyon with the most beautiful views. Because of this part the American Society of Travel Writers declared the Copper Canyon train as the “World’s most exciting train ride.”

Pick up your camara and enjoy the views of the mountains and canyons from your seat. We highly advise to book the first class of the Chepe Express. Most of the clients that do not book this class regret it.

Prepare to be wowed once more by breathtaking scenery. See the canyons in all its splendor, with the most stunning and mind-blowing views. A large, blue alpine lake will appear as you depart Septentrion Canyon. Have your camera ready because the views of the mountains and lake from the train as it passes over Chinipas bridge are once again breathtaking.

As you leave the canyon and Chihuahua state to enter Sinaloa, the terrain changes once more. Massive cacti, the kind seen in old Western pictures, begin to sprout on the hills and fields.

Arrive into El Fuerte, the las mind-blowing stop

You should arrive at El Fuerte station in the early afternoon if you take the Chepe Express. El Fuerte is the famed Zorro’s birthplace, and the final spot worth visiting in the train to Copper Canyon route. This gorgeous town will make you fall in love again.

El Fuerte Train to Copper Canyon

Explore Historic Downtown of El Fuerte

Take your time to stroll through El Fuerte’s old downtown. The majority of the ancient colonial structures have been renovated and painted in vibrant colors and pastels. It’s like stepping back in time with the large oak front doors that are frequently thrown open to expose lovely courtyards.

El Fuerte’s main square is in the heart of it all, and it has to be one of the most beautiful we’ve seen in Mexico. Benches, fountains, and bronze statues circle a central gazebo shaded by tall palm palms. What better spot to grab a coffee from one of the neighboring cafés or an ice cream from the shaded square?

Historic structures line the main square on the opposite side of the road; be sure to check out the Palacio Municipal. This magnificent salmon-colored rectangular building takes nearly an entire block and features a classic open-air centre courtyard with a splashing fountain. Two levels of arches are adorned with trailing bougainvillaeas, and the stairs leading to the second level features a colourful artwork.

El Fuerte Museum

El Fuerte is a Spanish word that means “fort” and refers to the city’s past as a fort. Although the old fort has long since vanished, a copy has been constructed on the hill where it once stood. This replica is also a museum with exhibits about the city’s and surrounding area’s history, as well as excellent views of the town and river from the top. It costs 20 pesos and is well worth your time if you have the opportunity.

Other Fun Activities in El Fuerte

There are a few other things to see and do in El Fuerte if you have more time it is recommended to at-least stay here for two nights.

A short trip to the Hill of the Mask, which is home to over 200 petroglyphs carved into the rocks, sounds intriguing. I’m sure you could do it on your own, or you could book a guided trip through your lodging. Some companies combine this with a birdwatching or river excursion.

Our last thoughts about the train to Copper Canyon

Although it is not a very famous touristic destination, the train to Copper Canyon offers one of the best train tours in the world. Through this article we have showed you 5 mind-blowing places that you will see in the trip:

How to Visit Copper Canyon by Train – Updated 2021

COVID-19 and El Chepe

Unfortunately, the Chepe website makes no mention of any precautions it is taking due to COVID-19. Please travel at your own risk and be sure to take whatever precautions possible to prevent the spread of the virus.

Journey through the Copper Canyon by train and experience one of the most scenic train rides in the world.

The Copper Canyon is one of Mexico’s lesser-known gems. Situated in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range, this canyon system is larger, and in some places deeper, than the Grand Canyon. The majority of the landscape in inaccessible but in the mid-1960s, after nearly 60 years of on and off construction, the painstaking process of laying railway tracks through the canyons was completed. Now, the train known as El Chepe is an important form of transportation for locals and the absolute best way for tourists to explore some of the most stunning views in all of Mexico.

As El Chepe chugs along its 653 km (405 mi) of track, a journey which takes anywhere from 9 to 16 hours, it crosses over 37 bridges and through 86 tunnels. It climbs to an elevation of 2400 m (7900 ft) and descends to sea level, passing through diverse and stunning scenery along the way. Among its stops are at least 5 towns worth visiting where you’ll have opportunities for adventure, hiking, learning about new cultures and taking in the magnificent landscapes.

Additional Information

The copper canyon train – el chepe.

The Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico, better known as El Chepe , is one of the only commuter trains in Mexico but it’s also the best way for tourists to visit the remote and awe-inspiring Copper Canyon.

The 653 km (405 mi) of track runs between Chihuahua, Chihuahua and Los Mochis, Sinaloa with 5 notable towns in between. Although the trip can be completed in just one day it is well worth extending the journey to last a few days or even a few weeks. Stopping and spending a few nights in the towns along the way is what makes a visit to the Copper Canyon so special.

As of May 2018, a brand new, luxury express train has been added to the daily schedule meaning there are now two ways to visit the Copper Canyon by train.

The older train is now known as Chepe Regional , and the new luxury train is called Chepe Express . There are a few significant differences:

  • The stops . This is probably the most significant difference between the two trains. The Chepe Regional makes 13 stops between Chihuahua and Los Mochis for both tourists and local commuters. The Chepe Express only runs between Los Mochis and Creel and makes 3 stops in between at the tourist destinations.
  • The schedule.  Both the Chepe Regional and Chepe Express run in opposite directions every 2 to 3 days . The Chepe Express, as its name implies, completes its route much faster than the Chepe Regional and arrival times, therefore, differ between each train. The schedules can be tricky and are explained in detail and with images below.
  • The price . The Chepe Express has recently seen some significant price reductions meaning that there is no longer a huge difference between Regional and the Express prices. However, there are different classes to choose from and these do vary in price. You can find more details about the prices below.
  • The comfort . Although I would not consider the Chepe Regional to be uncomfortable, it is an older train with basic amenities including washrooms and a dining car. The new Chepe Express, however,  is a luxury train complete with a bar car, a panoramic viewing car and a restaurant car.

Choosing which train to take will very likely be determined by your schedule, itinerary and flexibility. Neither train runs on a daily basis so you’ll want to carefully plan your trip beforehand. The next section will outline the train schedules in detail.

Copper Canyon by Train – Chepe Schedules and Routes

This part can be a little confusing so in order to keep things as clear as possible this section is divided into three parts: Chepe Express train schedule and route, Chepe Regional train schedule and route (no longer available for reservations), followed by a combined train schedule for both directions of travel.

Chepe Express Train Schedule and Route

Copper Canyon Train - Chepe Express Schedule

The Chepe Express runs in both directions between Creel and Los Mochis. It does not go all the way to Chihuahua but stops at the following main destinations: Creel, Divisadero, Bahuichivo, El Fuerte and Los Mochis.

From Creel to Los Mochis, trains only run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. In the opposite direction, from Los Mochis to Creel, trains only run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

In addition to the above schedule, the Chepe Express does a short round-trip between Creel and Divisadero on Saturdays (during their high season only).

Throughout 2021 , the Chepe Express will not be running on all the days mentioned above. It will not run on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Saturdays unless in high season . You can view the 2021 Calendar here .

Below are the timetables for the Chepe Express train in both directions. Please keep in mind that it is not running on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Saturdays for most of 2021.

CREEL towards LOS MOCHIS – Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays ONLY

Los mochis towards creel – mondays, wednesdays and fridays only, chepe regional  train schedule and route.

Copper Canyon Train - Chepe Regional Schedule

Officially, the Chepe Regional is now only a commuter train for locals . It is not possible to make reservations on the Chepe Regional.

This is a new development and it is unclear as to whether tourists will be able to use the Regional the same as locals or not use it at all. If your time is not flexible, or you are planning to travel in high-season (Easter, summer, Christmas/New Years) then you should plan your trip around the Chepe Express schedule.

The information below was accurate as of March 2020, but should be used cautiously.

From Chihuahua towards Los Mochis, the Chepe Regional train only runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. From Los Mochis towards Chihuahua, it only run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Below are detailed timetables for each direction for the main tourist stops.

CHIHUAHUA towards LOS MOCHIS Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays ONLY

Los mochis towards chihuahua tuesdays, thursdays and sundays only.

In my experience, the trains are almost always a little behind schedule but it’s recommended that you show up at least 20-30 minutes before the train is scheduled to arrive.

Weekly Train Schedule for Chepe Regional and Express

The tables below show the arrival times for all Chepe trains (Regional and Express) at the main tourist destinations over the course of any given week. There is one table for each direction of travel. Remember,  the Chepe Regional is officially for local commuters, not tourists. For this reason, the times have been crossed out but remain listed as a reference or for those who wish to attempt to use it and report back 😉

Chihuahua towards Los Mochis

You may need to scroll left and right to view the entire table.

Los Mochis towards Chihuahua

The information above was accurate at the time of writing. Always double check the schedule on the Chepe website before making a purchase.

Copper Canyon by Train – Ticket Prices

Ticket prices vary between the two trains and between classes within each train.

The Chepe Regional is split into two classes: Economy  and Tourist . The difference is that the Economy class is primarily used for local commuters and tickets cannot be reserved . These tickets are purchased on the train the day of travel. Economy ticket holders do not have access to the dining car . Tourist class ticket holders have access to the dining car but the food is not included in the price.

The Chepe Express has recently been split into three classes: Tourist (formerly Economy), Executive and First . All Express ticket holders have access to the restaurant car. Executive class ticket holders also have access to the bar car. First class ticket holders have access to the bar car, a terrace car for great views and open windows and have a meal included at the restaurant car.

The image below will give you an idea of the differences between the 5 options and the prices for a one-way ticket across the entire route. Note that the Chepe Express does not go all the way to Chihuahua .

Copper Canyon by Train - Differences between Chepe Regional and Chepe Express

*Prices in USD were calculated using an exchange rate of 19.25 MXP per 1.oo USD. The USD prices will vary depending on the exchange rate.

Chepe Regional Ticket Prices

Chepe regional – economy class.

Economy tickets are like a form of public transportation; they’re purchased on-the-go and you cannot make reservations . A single trip from Chihuahua to Los Mochis is much cheaper than the Tourist class, however, if you wish to stay at any of the towns along the way you will need to purchase each segment of your trip individually. Individual segments vary in price and you can obtain these prices on the Chepe website .

Economy tickets are best for those who do not wish to be tied to specific dates.

Economy tickets are not recommended during high season (July, August, Christmas and Easter week), as the train is usually quite full. If there is no room you won’t be able to board.

Chepe Regional – Tourist Class

Purchasing a Tourist ticket entitles you to deboard at three different stations . For example, purchasing a ticket from Chihuahua to El Fuerte means that you can also get off at Creel, Divisadero and Bahuichivo along the way. Because of the train’s schedule, however, you would need to stay in each town for at least 2 nights. Remember, the train only runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays in that particular direction.

You will need to declare which stops you plan to disembark and the exact dates when you purchase your tickets.  More information on how to purchase tickets below.

If you wish to get off at more than three stops then you’ll be charged for the additional segments at a slightly higher rate.

You can mix and match Tourist and Economy tickets to save money if you plan to make more than three stops.

HOT TIP: Taking a bus between El Fuerte and Los Mochis is about $70 MXP. The train is a minimum of $348 MXP. With the bus, you can save money and won’t miss any spectacular views.

Below are old price tables for the Chepe Regional Economy and Tourist classes. These tables display prices from Chihuahua to the corresponding destinations. Again, the Chepe Regional is for locals. Tourists may not even be able to board. These prices were accurate in March 2020 but are no longer available on the Chepe website.

Chepe Express Ticket Prices

Chepe express: tourist, executive and first class.

Purchasing a Chepe Express ticket from Creel to Los Mochis or Los Mochis to Creel in any class entitles you to deboard at three stops in between. For example, if you purchase a ticket from Creel to Los Mochis, you can also get off at Divisadero and/or Bahuichico and/or El Fuerte along the way. As the train does not return for another two or three days, you’ll need to stay for a minimum of 2 nights in each town, or use an alternative mode of transportation.

As with the Chepe Regional, you’ll need to declare which stops you plan to disembark and the exact dates when purchasing the tickets.

Unlike the Regional, the Chepe Express offers a discount for round-trip tickets if you need to get back to your starting point.

Below are the price tables for the Chepe Express Tourist, Executive and First classes. The tables display the prices from Creel to the corresponding destinations and the prices for a round-trip. For individual segment prices visit the Chepe website .

How many days do I need to see the Copper Canyon by train?

This, of course, will depend on many factors. How much time do you have? What do you want to see? What activities would you like to do?

If you’re on a tight schedule it’s possible to see some great sights in the Copper Canyon in just a couple of days but I’d highly recommend spending at least a week travelling through the Canyons and towns nestled within them.

Below is an example itinerary and a great starting point for planning a trip. Click on any destination to learn more about what to see and do in that location.

Sample One-way itinerary from Chihuahua towards Los Mochis:

Day 1 – Chihuahua – Creel Day 2 –  Creel Day 3 – Creel – Divisadero (Posada Barrancas) Day 4 – Divisadero – Bahuichivo (Cerocahui) Day 5 – Cerocahui Day 6 –  Bahuichivo – El Fuerte Day 7 –  El Fuerte – Los Mochis (Topolobampo)

Use this as a starting point for your planning and add or take away destinations to suit your schedule and budget. You can also save time and money by taking a bus between Creel and Divisadero or between El Fuerte and Los Mochis, and you won’t miss any spectacular views. See the Additional Information section below for more details about substituting buses for the train in certain areas.

The Copper Canyon Train Stations

If you’re traveling through Copper Canyon by train Chihuahua will very likely be your start or end point. It’s the largest city along the Chepe route and the easiest to access by international or even domestic flights. There is an interesting history to explore here and you can learn more about it by clicking on the photo or title.

Copper Canyon by Train - Chihuahua, Mexico

One of Mexico’s “Pueblo Mágicos” this little town on the outskirts of the Copper Canyon has a wide and unique assortment of nature to explore and a variety of ways to do it. Whether you prefer to hike, bike, ATV or drive you’ll appreciate a visit to the Valley of the Frogs, relaxing in the beautiful surroundings of the Recohuata Hot Springs or taking a trip to Cusárare Falls. You’ll also have an opportunity to discover the Rarámuri culture first-hand. Click the photo or title to learn more about Creel.

Divisadero and Posada Barrancas

These are two different train stops but they are very close together.

At Divisadero everyone will have an opportunity to exit the train for 15 minutes to snap some photos at a lookout point. This is the best spot for stunning views of the Copper Canyon ravines. There is one hotel at this stop if you want to spend a night but there are more hotel options at the Posada Barrancas stop.

Copper Canyon by Train - Divisadero, Mexico

There are a few tourist attractions accessible from either town you choose to stay in. These include a cable car, zip lines (including the fasted and longest in the world), bike rides, ATV, and rock climbing.

Copper Canyon by Train - Bahuichivo, Mexico

Bahuichivo Station

From the Bahuichivo stop you can travel to either Cerocahui or Urique. Both towns are deep in the Tarahumara Mountain Range.

Cerocahui is a 20 minute car ride from the Bahuichivo stop. Trekking or horsebacking riding to the Cerocahui Waterfalls is a popular activity in this area. You can also book a tour to the Gallego Hill viewpoint for some breathtaking views of the Canyon system.

Urique is about a 2 and a half hour ride away from the Bahuichivo stop. The route through the mountains is beautiful but not for the faint of heart! It’s also possible to trek here from Cerocahui. Once there take in your surroundings while cooling off in the river.

Another of Mexico’s “Pueblos Mágicos” located in the state of Sinaloa on the banks of the Fuerte River. El Fuerte is known for its fort, for which the city is named after. It’s also known as the birthplace of the legendary Zorro. You can visit both buildings – the fort is now a replica and a museum and Zorro’s childhood home is a hotel. Los Mochis and Topolobampo

Los Mochis itself isn’t a terribly exciting or picturesque city but it is a handy hub if you are arriving from or want to travel to Baja California, Guadalajara or elsewhere in Mexico. The close-by port of Topolobampo is a much better place to visit and tour around or catch a ferry to La Paz, Baja California Sur. Enjoy the beach, take a dip in the ocean, eat fantastic seafood or book a tour of the Farallón natural reserve. Click the title or image to learn more about Los Mochis and Topolobampo.

Copper Canyon by Train – Buying Chepe Regional Economy Tickets

Economy tickets can only be purchased one day in advance or on the train.

To buy them in advance you’ll need to go directly to the ticket office at either the Chihuahua or Los Mochis stations. There are no ticket sales offices at any of the intermediate stops. Note that your tickets will not have an assigned car or seat; these will be determined upon boarding the train.

As these tickets can’t be purchased more than one day in advance, you’ll only be able to purchase one segment of your trip at a time. The next segment can be purchased on the train.

To buy your tickets on the train in Chihuahua or Los Mochis, join the queue at the entrance of the station. An attendant will ask you how many people are in your party and assign you a car number and seats. Once the journey begins, authorized personnel will charge you for the tickets ( cash only ).

If you purchased your tickets the day before then just show an attendant at the station and you’ll pass to the front of the line where you’ll be assigned a car and seat number.

To buy onward Economy tickets at the intermediate stops you will have to wait for the train to arrive. Once you’ve boarded you can purchase your tickets from an attendant. Just remember the Chepe Regional train doesn’t run every day .

Seats are usually available in the Economy class but in high season (July, August, Christmas and Easter week) you may run into difficulties. Economy is primarily for local commuters so if it’s full you won’t be able to board.

Copper Canyon by Train – Buying Chepe Regional Tourist and Express Tickets

Chepe Express (Tourist and Executive) and Regional Tourist tickets must be purchased in advance as these tickets are not sold on the train or at any intermediate stops along the Chepe route. You’ll also need to print your tickets .

During high season (July, August, Christmas and Easter week) it’s advisable to purchase your tickets at least 3 weeks in advance.

You can purchase your Chepe Express or Regional Tourist tickets by phone, email or by going to the station in either Los Mochis or Chihuahua if you’ll be there a few days before you plan to leave.

I’ve tried calling to book tickets on multiple occasions and no one has ever answered the phone but in theory you can book tickets by calling 011 52 614 439 7212, or +52 1 614 439 7212. If you’re in Mexico and calling from a local line use 01 (614) 439-7212.

If you don’t speak Spanish then email will be the easiest way to book your tickets but the process can take a few days.

To purchase your tickets via email follow these steps:

1. Send an email to [email protected] (and to be safe cc [email protected] ) with the following information:

  • The full name(s) and age(s) of each passenger
  • Which class you’d like (Regional Tourist, Express Tourist or Executive)
  • The station where you’ll start your trip and the date
  • The station where you’ll end your trip and the date
  • Stops you will make in between and the dates

It’s also a good idea to fill out the form on the Chepe website with the same information as above. You can find the form by clicking this link:  http://www.chepe.com.mx/contacto

2. You’ll receive a confirmation email similar to the document here. It’s important to note that this email does NOT contain your tickets.

Double check that the information highlighted in GREEN is correct. This is your itinerary and names of passengers. You may need to show photo ID with matching names upon boarding the train.

The date highlighted in YELLOW is your payment deadline . If no payment is received by that date your reservation will be cancelled.

If you are already in Mexico or will be before the payment deadline then you can pay at a Banamex Bank . In this case, you’ll need the information highlighted in BLUE.

If you want to pay by credit card (MasterCard or Visa only) you can respond to the email asking for a link to pay online.

Best Time to Travel Copper Canyon by Train

The best time to visit Copper Canyon by train is September-October just as the rainy season is winding down and the weather is still fairly warm. That said, the Copper Canyon can be enjoyed any time of year but it is worth noting that in April and May most of the rivers have dried up and waterfalls are often just trickling.

You can traverse the entire Copper Canyon route by bus if you want but it wouldn’t be terribly comfortable and you’d miss the stunning panoramas seen from El Chepe. Below are a few of the routes that might help save money or time without missing the most incredible views from the train.

  • Chihuahua – Creel : The scenery isn’t as beautiful as it is from El Chepe and it won’t be as comfortable or as fast but it will be cheaper and there are more departure times in both directions. You will have two bus options: Rápidos Cuauhtémoc or  Autotransportes Turísticos del Noroeste .
  • Creel – Divisadero/Posada Barrancas: This is a short bus ride and you can even do a round-trip thereby staying in Creel rather than Barrancas or Divisadero. Autotransportes Turísticos del Noroeste   is your best option with a station in the centre of Creel a few steps from the train station.
  • El Fuerte – Los Mochis: This stretch really isn’t worth doing by train. You won’t miss any scenery and you’ll save time and money travelling by bus. The bus leaves El Fuerte from the Municipal Market on Benito Juarez Avenue. There are no posted schedules but buses leave approximately every 30 minutes. Click here for more details about getting to and from El Fuerte.

Travel Insurance

Due to government travel advisories, not all travel insurance policies provide coverage for travel in the Copper Canyon. Make sure you purchase the right policy for your trip.  Click here  to learn more about travel insurance specifically for the Copper Canyon.

Many of the hotels throughout the Copper Canyon do not contain room safes and front desk staff will not assume responsibility for valuable items left with them. For this reason, I always travel with a  LOCTOTE  bag, which is a slash proof sack that can be secured to many fixtures. I find it brings me peace of mind when leaving my passport, camera, laptop or other valuables in my hotel room. It’s also great for the beach!

You can learn more about this super handy product by  clicking here .

Ubers and Taxis

In the small towns, you can easily arrange a safe taxi ride via your hotel. In the larger cities, like Chihuahua and Los Mochis, you may find that you want to hail a cab to get from one attraction to another, or to the airport, etc. In these cases, I find that ordering an Uber is the easiest and safest way to get around.

If you don’t already have an Uber account, you can click the link below to sign up with my promotion code and receive $2 off your first 3 rides.

If you have any questions or have recently travelled through the Copper Canyon and have any tips, please feel free to leave a comment below so that I can keep the site as up-to-date as possible. Happy travels!

Thanks for bringing to our attention this amazing train ride opportunity! I was wondering if any of the train options you mentioned offer the option to bring my car on board?

Thanks, Jack

Hi Jack, the train does not have any cargo cars where one could load a vehicle. You would need to find a safe place to park and leave it.

Hi Tara, We travelled Chepe Regional on Saturday January 30th from Chihuahua to Creel departure time 06.00am. Obviously it’s no problem to get tickets even as a tourist. We bought the ticket the same at the station. Some people had even printouts with QR tags. Probably it’s possible to buy the tics online. Armin

Whichdays does the train run from Los Mochis to creel or Chihuahua does it run everyday if you could help me out that would be fantastic thanks

The Chepe schedule can certainly be confusing. I’ve done my best to clarify things in my article and you can click this link to see the Express schedule. It’s always best to check the official Chepe website before making any final plans as they are making schedule changes more frequently due to COVID-19.

Thank you very much for all the information, it has helped me a lot to plan my trip in the Chepe to Creel and the copper canyons.

I will go in January 2021 and I have been looking for a lot of information, I also see that it is interesting to go to the adventure park in copper canyon.

Thanks so much for the feedback! Just make sure you check their website frequently as they are making changes to the Express schedule between Dec 2020 and Jan 11, 2021.

Hello, Creel! Did you already visit Copper Canyon in this month? Could you please help with schedule of El Chepe? Which days does it run now and should we book it in advance (or now it’s low season)? We are planning be there in couple of weeks and travel from El Fuerte to Creel. Difficult to plan something in situation when you don’t have exact schedule. Thank you!

Thank you Kayla, this website is incredible and full of wonderful information. I am really hoping to take the train soon, although will be waiting for the Covid situation to calm a little more. Do you know anything about the fact they have reduced the Express timetable to just two days a week? This makes any normal/enjoyable itinerary very difficult, do you have any recommendations for overcoming this? I would ideally like to travel from Chihuahua to Los Mochis and see Creel, Divisadero and El Fuerte. The only reasonable route I can think of in order to fit this trip into one week would be to bus from chihuahua to creel, train from creel to El fuerte with a stop in divisadero (Sunday and Tuesday trains), and then bus again to Los Mochis from El Fuerte. Thoughts? Am I losing much in doing this? Thanks!

Hi James, thank you so much for your comments and questions.

Planning any kind of travel around the Chepe schedule these days might be difficult. They have been making frequent changes to timetables and even stopped running the trains on some days.

That said, I think your itinerary sounds pretty good! My strongest suggestion is to make sure you’re on a train between Divisadero and Bahuichivo, as this is the most scenic span of the trip. Just make sure you check their website frequently for any changes to their schedule.

A lovely informative article. I used to live and work in Mexico but never new about El Chepe. Anyway I’m now back in boring England but thinking about touring Mexico on my bicycle and wondered whether I can take a bicycle on the train?

I’ve just watched a great 1 hour documentary about the El Chepe Railway Journey that has inspired me to return.

Thank you so much for the comments! I received this same question a while back and as far as I know you are unable to bring a bike but I’ve contacted the company to see if they allow them now that they have two trains.

I will provide an answer here just as soon as I’ve heard from them.

Hopefully travel will resume later this year and everyone can enjoy the great sites again soon!

I’ve heard back from the staff at Ferromex regarding bikes and have been informed that it is not possible to bring a bike aboard the Chepe Express (the Chepe Regional will no longer run for tourists). I hope this doesn’t dissuade you from visiting Copper Canyon in the future as there is still plenty to see and do there.

Thank you again for raising the question as I’m sure others were wondering the same thing.

Hi there has the tourist service been stopped because of coronavirus or for other reasons?

Hi Georges, Yes, Chepe has suspended service until further notice. You can view more info on their website in case you need to reschedule a train that was already booked.

Stay safe and healthy!

Thank you very much for your website – it is really helping me plan my trip.

I do just have one question though that i can’t find the answer to.

We are wanting to take the train from El Fuerte to Bahuichivo, transfer by car to Divisadero and then take the train back to El Fuerte. I note that a return ticket El Fuerte to Divisadero is cheaper than just buying tickets for the actual train journeys that we want to make. If we do buy a return but do not travel on the train between Bahuichivo and Divisadero does that matter? Will we still be allowed to take the return train from Divisadero back to El Fuerte? (I am asking because once i got caught out when i was flying and i missed one section of my journey and so i was not allowed to board the return flight – i am hoping that el chepe is not as strict as this.)

I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks Karen

Although it is not in writing anywhere, I am fairly certain that no one will mind if you don’t use a segment of your journey. In my experience, the Chepe staff are quite laid-back about everything.

I would, however, ensure that you can get a ride between Bahuichivo and Divisadero. There are no major roads between these two towns and you would therefore be taking dirt roads that may be poorly maintained in a very mountainous region. I’d caution you to be sure that you have a reliable vehicle and are well informed of how to get from one town to the next as I’m unaware of any route. This is also the most scenic part of the train journey (although, if you are travelling on the Express then this segment will be after sunset). But you should get those great views on your return trip.

I would love to know more about how you fare from Bahuichivo to Divisadero if you feeling like sending an update after your trip.

Have a lovely time!

Hello, Thank you so much for writing this information. It has been so useful.

I am trying to book the Chepe Regional tourist class for April through the [email protected] and the reply I keep getting a reply saying that the Regional will no longer be running after the 31st March. I am very confused because another email address the: [email protected] said I can book but only after the 15th March.

Do you know if the Regional train is running in 2020? Does anyone know how I can reserve tickets for the Regional train?

I have booked all the flights and accommodation now and I am worried I will not get a place on the train 🙁

Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. I have contacted Chepe Ferromex and they have confirmed that the Chepe Regional will no longer run as a tourist train after March 31st. I was told that travellers will need to rely on the Chepe Express timetable. However, it seems that the Chepe Regional will continue to run as a commuter train and it is unclear as to whether or not travellers will be able to use it as well. This may be why you are receiving conflicting answers when you contact them.

My guess would be that the Chepe Regional will run as it does now but only for the Economy class. This would mean that you won’t be able to reserve tickets but can probably jump on at any station and pay for your ride on board.

I do want to note that this is my best guess and that this has not been confirmed by anyone at Chepe. Assuming that you will have this option is a risk and to be safe, I’d recommend having a backup plan or rearranging your itinerary to fit with the Chepe Express schedule.

I understand that this may interfere with your travel plans but there are a lot of bus options that may help you rearrange your plans. Please let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to help.

Kayla, Love the site, and the photos and all the suggestions. Thanks for your time & effort on behalf of weary travelers. I want to board the train, starting in El Fuerte on a Sun., go straight to Creel and spend a few nights there, with a side trip via the bus to Batopilas. We will return to Creel and take the bus to Divisadero and or Posada Barranca and then the bus to Areponapuchi fora night or two Then back on the train to return to El Forte. We have a flexible schedule so open to suggestions. I will watch the train schedule as we will use the regional train. I have been in touch with the Chepe people and they insist that tickets can only be purchased at Los Mochis or Chihuahua!. What am I missing? I anticipate that I can buy tickets from one station to the next with cash. Many thanks, Kathy

Thanks for your comment and your schedule looks great so far! Batopilas is absolutely beautiful and I think that it makes for a great addition to your itinerary.

As far as I know, travellers and local commuters alike were always able to buy Chepe Regional Economy tickets on board the train. Being Economy class tickets, this does mean that there are no assigned seats and no access to the dining car. With the recent changes in January, it is possible that they are trying to discourage this and prompt travellers to buy Tourist class tickets, in which case they need to be purchased ahead of time.

However, as the Regional is still used by locals as a commuter train, I imagine that one can still purchase Economy class tickets on the go. I don’t want to guarantee that this option will be available to you and to be safe I’d suggest purchasing tickets in advance through email. If you do decide to try purchasing tickets on the go, I’d love to hear about your experience so that I can keep others up-to-date.

I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Your site is extremely informative. Thanks! Like so many before me I am hoping to get your opinion on an itinerary. I plan to leave Tuscan (by bus) on March 25th, arrive to Los Mochis on March 26th (in the morning), and take a bus from there to El Fuerte (arriving there on March 26th in the mid-morning/early afternoon). I would spend 1 or 2 nights depending. I would like to take the train (&/or bus combo) from El Fuerte to Chihuahua and ideally take a bus?? from Chihuahua back to Tuscan. I’m not sure a bus is doable and I’ve had a had time nailing down any bus info from Chihuahua to Tuscan. I was hoping to go back to Tuscan using a different route. Is this possible w/ my time frame? I need to be back in Tuscan by April 1st or 2nd. I was hoping you could suggest an itinerary that would allow me to see/experience quite a bit of the canyon, but not be so rushed that I wouldn’t have time to enjoy what I was seeing. :-)) Thank so much for your help. Tara

Your itinerary sounds good so far. I’m also not sure about a direct bus from Chihuahua to Tuscan but there are buses that travel between Chihuahua and El Paso. It might be that you need to transfer in El Paso as I”m sure there will be buses between there and Tuscan (though I have not looked into this).

For more bus information from Chihuahua you can click this link: https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-chihuahua/#getthere

If you’re tight on time, I’d suggest only 1 night in El Fuerte, 1 night in Divisadero and maybe 2 nights in both Creel and Chihuahua. Of course, if you want to do some hiking you may want to stay longer in Divisadero and spend less time in Chihuahua.

Happy planning!

Hi there Can you please let me know prices on the train from Creek to the Pacific. First class and economy one way and return. Thank you Christine

Hi Christine, thanks for the question. You can find all the prices listed on the Chepe website, https://chepe.mx/en/train/get-to-know-the-chepe-express-rates/

A one-way trip from Creel to Los Moches in first class will cost $3,600 MXP (approx. $180 USD).

thanks for making this information available to people! Have you ever heard of a service for taking cars from one end of the canyon to the other? We are on a road trip but on a slightly tight schedule so if possible would like to board in El Fuerte or Los Mochis and meet our car in Chihuahua so we can drive on to Texas from there. I sent an email via the online form but on second thought there may be other people with this question (maybe just me?:)

Thanks for the inquirey, Hassan!

I’ve been asked something similar a while back and unfortunately, I didn’t have a solid answer. The tracks are used by freight trains, but I just don’t know if they will transport vehicles. You can check out their site here: https://www.ferromex.com.mx/

If you do find a way to do this, please feel free to share your information here for future travellers.

Thanks again for the comment!

Fantastic info!

Feb 2020 will be my 4th time on the train, so this website was super helpful to keep up to date on the train and schedules

So glad to hear it was helpful, Jason!

Hi Kayla, Thank you for such a useful website! I’ve been trying to book a Chepe Regional Tourist ticket with no success. Both email addresses are manned (thank you!) but they keep saying they can’t book for 2020 yet, and to try again in a couple of weeks. This has been going on for months! My partner and I are planning to hit Copper Canyon in early January 2020. Do you know if this is normal? We’re starting to worry that we need to make contingency plans. I was hoping to book everything from home before leaving on the trip rather than booking as we go once in Mexico. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I’ve not heard of this issue happening before and I will try to contact them to find out more information.

My advice would be to continue to contact them every week. Worst-case scenario, you can book tickets in person in Los Mochis or Chihuahua a day or two before you plan to depart. January is not a very busy month for El Chepe so I don’t think you would have any problems with booking the schedule that you want, even if it’s last minute.

If you are booking hotels ahead of time, I’d suggest using booking.com and choosing options that allow you to cancel up to 24 hours beforehand. Booking.com is great for that!

I will leave an update in the comments as soon as I hear back from Ferromex.

I just received a response from Ferromex and it looks like there are going to be some changes to fares and schedules as of January 10th, 2020 .

They were unable to provide me with details as they are unconfirmed changes at this time. However, they recommend contacted them in about 2 weeks to make your reservations.

Once again, thank you for bringing this to my attention and I hope everything works out smoothly for you.

Thanks for looking into it Kayla. I’m now being told by email they can’t book past the 10th January – frustrating! It is good to understand why, however, so we’re changing our plans to fly into Chihuahua instead of Los Mochis and will take the bus to Creel where we’ll then make a base. Hopefully we can jump on the Regional Economic train and still make some stops with El Chepe.

That’s a great plan, Eloise! You can still get to most locations by bus, however, I’m quite certain that the train will still be running. I guess they just don’t want to sell tickets in advance because they’re modifying the price. Best of luck in your travels!

Excellent website- very very helpful and informative!!!!!

Thank you for the lovely feedback!

Hi Kayla, I really appreciate your website. Can you make recommendations for Bahuichivo – Cerocahui? We will take the El Chepe Regional from El Fuerte to Bahuichivo on Sunday, Sept. 1. We’ll be there two nights waiting for the El Chepe Regional en route to Divisidero/Posada Barrancas. You mentioned it’s a small town. Do you have recommendations for where to stay and what to do there? Also, can I pay you to look over our complete itinerary to make comments before I actually book air fare and make reservation??? Let me know. Thanks so much.

Thank you for the lovely comments, Betsy!

So far, your itinerary sounds great and aligns with the Chepe Regional schedule. As much as I appreciate your offer to have me review your itinerary, I must decline as I’ve got quite a few projects on the go at the moment.

In Cerocahui, there’s a wonderful hotel called Hotel Jade . I’ve provided a link to their site below, however, it’s best to book them over the phone as they’re not on booking.com and the internet service in Cerocahui is unreliable, so they may not be able to respond to emails.

Hotel Jade: http://hoteljade.com.mx/hotel/

The owners are incredibly friendly and you can arrange for them to pick you up at the station in Bahuichivo.

Once in Cerocauhui, there are plenty of hiking options, and/or, you can arrange a tour to Mirador Cerro del Gallego, which is a viewpoint overlooking the Urique Canyon. Very picturesque, but make sure you have the stomach for the ride up there!

I hope I’ve been able to help you with your planning and I wish you a wonderful trip!

Thank you very much for putting on this site. It’s really informative. If possible, I would like to ask some questions. I’ve read about Cerocahui nearby Bahuichivo. Do you know if that part is worth while to see? Or is Divisadero as nice of even more beautiful? Of course everything is nice, but we have to make decisions :). We are planning to go end of july/beginning of august. Just for the experience we would love to take economic. It that possible from El Fuerte to Creel? I cannot find ‘El fuerte’ in the initiary of the economic train. I have read though, that you don’t recommend the economic train in high season. Do you think it is possible to just go to the station and if it’s full, to book a regional at the station? Or do we need to purchase the regional tickets in advance? We are not sure when we get there, so it will be a little bit last minute.

I hope you can help us in making a decision.

Thanks for you respons in advance!

Thanks for your comment and questions!

First, Cerocahui is lovely but very small. It’s a great place to start a trek down into the Urique Valley, or just relax in a tiny town barely touched by tourists. However, if you’re tight on time and need to choose between Divisadero and Cerocahui, I’d suggest Divisadero.

Second, the trains can be confusing! The Chepe Regional has two classes – Economic and Tourist, and it definitely travels between El Fuerte and Creel. You can click the links below to find my pages on each town: El Fuerte – https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-el-fuerte-sinaloa/ Creel – https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-creel/

In addition, here is a link to the Chepe website with the schedules: http://www.chepe.com.mx/preguntas-frecuentes

Lastly, as far as buying Economic Class tickets on the train, it is a risk as these spots are primarily for local commuters. If it’s full, you may be able to buy Tourist Class tickets if you’re in Chihuahua or Los Mochis, but you cannot buy those tickets at any of the stations in between. If you’re heading to Copper Canyon during the summer, Christmas or Easter, I’d recommend trying to plan out your itinerary ahead of time and make reservations.

Keep in mind that some of those routes are doable by bus, in case you can’t get a train ticket. The one train ticket you will need is between El Fuerte and Creel (or Divisadero).

I hope you enjoy planning and have a wonderful time!

I have a question regarding making hotel reservations via booking.com versus direct through the hotel. Are there any issues with reservations? thank you, Olivia Sullivan

I’m not aware of any issues with booking directly through the hotels, especially if you speak Spanish. However, I’d be reluctant to give any credit card information over the phone or through email. I do like using Booking.com for payments.

We are planning a trip (there are 4 of us) to the Copper Canyon October 9, 2019. we will start our trip via Chihuahua. In making our plans we are thinking of taking El Chepe all the way to El Fuerte and staying there a couple of days before we head back and stay in Creel and Divisadero as well. We are wondering if this time of year there are any problems in getting tickets on the regional train since it is not the tourist train. We would appreciate your feedback. Thank you, Olivia Sullivan

Thank you for your question!

I wish I could give you a definite answer, but unfortunately, I’m not sure. October is the best time to visit the Copper Canyon (weather-wise), so this may attract a lot of people. My guess is that you’d be ok to buy Chepe Regional Economy tickets on the train, but if you can purchase Tourist Class ahead of time, I’d advise doing so.

Happy planning and I hope you have a fantastic trip!

Hi David, firstly I’ve found your website very informative. We are going to travel with friends who are meeting us in San Miguel de Allende and this was the trip we we’re planning, any suggestions or comments are appreciated. Plan to Los Mochis and take the regional tourist ticket and get off in Creel. We would take the train on a Tuesday to Creel. Stay there a couple of days a take a guided trip to the Adventure park as well as other sites(Copper Canyon Tours) and Friday take the 3:39 from Creel to Chihuahua. Say there until Sunday and fly back to San Miguel. Comments? Thanks Ira Goldman

Thanks for the comments!

Your itinerary sounds great! My one suggestion would be to take a bus or taxi from Los Mochis to El Fuerte , and catch the train from there. Even if you only get to spend a few hours there, it’s a very cute colonial town worth seeing, and a nicer place to spend a night than Los Mochis.

Have a fantastic time!

Hello question, husband and I arrive Thursday Oct 3 to Chihuahua. If we take bus to Creel, can we take Express from Creel on Friday Oct 4 at 730 am and go to Los Mochis for night and then come back to Creel on Saturday Oct 5 at 730 am? We have to be in Chichuahua on Monday to fly out.

Hi Nancy, that’s a good question.

You could take the Express from Creel to Los Mochis on Friday and return on Saturday, however, you’d be spending most of those two days on the train and not have much of a chance to appreciate the towns along the route.

I’d suggest modifying your itinerary a bit. I’ve listed two suggestions below:

Option 1. Take a bus to Creel on Thursday, then catch the Express to El Fuerte on Friday morning. Spend the night in El Fuerte (as it’s much nicer than Los Mochis). Catch the Express on Saturday morning and get off at Divisadero. Spend the night there and catch the Regional on Sunday, as this will take you all the way back to Chihuahua.

Option 2. Take the bus to Creel or Divisadero on Thursday. Spend Thursday and Friday night in one or both of these towns. Then, if you’d still like to see El Fuerte or if you want to see the incredible views from the train on the way to El Fuerte, catch the Chepe Regional train to El Fuerte on Saturday and return to Chihuahua via the Regional on Sunday (this will be a very long train ride).

There are more options of course, but either of the two above will allow you to see more of the towns along the way, which I think are very much worth it. I’ve included some links below to places you can stay in the towns I mentioned: Chihuahua – https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-chihuahua/#hotels Creel – https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-creel/#hotels Divisadero – https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-divisadero-mexico/#hotels El Fuerte – https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-el-fuerte-sinaloa/#hotels

Whatever you choose, I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time.

Kayla, I’m trying to get an itinerary together and am interested in several points:

1:Possibly will take a taxi from Chihuahua to Creel only because of time constraints on a Sunday night and then after 1 night in Creel, go on a 3 day, 2 night trip to Batopilos with 3 Amigos. So Sunday night taxi, Monday and Tuesday nights Batopilos and Wed night in Creel and Thursday to Divisadero train or bus and Friday from there after 1 night in Posadas Barranca or Divisadero to El Fuerte and on to mexico City from Los Mochis on the Sunday. Obviously we’re not trying to do it on the cheap and may mean mixing Regional and Express trains. Is it better to take bus to Divisaderoand just 1 train to el Fuerte from time management point of view? OR 2:Forget Batopilos and the taxi and do train/bus to Creel on the Monday and spend 2 nights there touring; then bus to Divisadero on Wednesday and 2 nights there in adventure park and hiking and then train to El Fuerte Friday and weekend there. Which allows us to see the canyons from up close better?

Your itineraries both sound great. If I had to choose one for you, I’d go with your first one, which includes Batolpilas. The town is just incredible and you won’t be disappointed.

Once back in Creel, I would suggest taking a bus to Divisadero as it’s a short ride, it’ll give you more flexibility and you won’t miss much by not taking the train. The most amazing views are between Divisadero and El Fuerte.

My only concern for you is finding a taxi that will take you from Chihuahua to Creel. I’d recommend arranging that ahead of time just to ensure they will and can do that, as I believe it’s a 5-6 hour drive.

If you end up taking the tour with 3 Amigos, I’d love to hear about it as I’ve never used them. Whatever you choose, I hope you have a wonderful time!

We are starting our Mexico journey in Matzatlan, so we are looking at taking a bus and getting on the El Chepe Express in Los Mochis, or can that not be done to get to the Copper Canyon trip? If the train trip into Copper Canyon ends in Creel can we get train for bus from there? We read it is not a safe state to travel, so we don’t want to be staying in cities near Chihuahua. I also read somewhere the El Chepe Express arrives about 4 p.m.in LosMochis, so is there a bus line you recommend we can get on in the evening and go all night to arrive in Guadalajara the next day? We will be traveling for two months in Mexico, so we will each have a larger suitcase and backpack. Busses allow that right?

Hi Leigh & Karen, I’m so glad you’re planning to incorporate the Copper Canyon into your 2-month Mexico adventure!

From what I understand, you’re itinerary is Mazatlán –> Copper Canyon (round-trip) –> Guadalajara . I hope I got that right.

There is a bus company called TAP that runs between Mazatlán and Los Mochis. You can certainly bring a suitcase or large backpack but you’ll likely need to leave it in the storage under the bus.

Once is Los Mochis, I think your best bet is to do a round-trip on the Chepe Express . Otherwise, you’ll need to take the Chepe Regional train or a bus to Chihuahua in order to catch a flight to Guadalajara. There are buses from Chihuahua to Guadalajara but they are long and expensive.

After your Chepe Express round-trip, when you’re back in Los Mochis, you can use the same TAP bus line to get to Guadalajara. However, it may be worth checking Calafia Airlines or Volaris as a flight may be similar in cost but much faster.

You can click the link below for more information about connecting in Los Mochis: https://visitcoppercanyon.com/topolobampo-and-los-mochis-sinaloa/#getthere

I also have pages on the other Chepe Express stops

I hope you two have an amazing time!

Hi, Thank you so much for your information. I am planing to take this great train trip in June for 4-5 days. I enjoy more about the train Journey buy maybe stop one place. Which place has the best views (photography is my thing) and experience, would you suggest? If I take the train from Chihuahua regional train and stop some where for a night (maybe Divisadero), can I change the express train next day rather wait for 2 days back to the same train, can I get the ticket in the stations when I am there or I need to pre-book first? I’d like take the express train all the way but hassle to get Creel first. I am from Australia and travel to Dallas and then to Mexico then central and South America, Should I fly from Dallas to Chihuahua or Los Mochis to take the train trip? Any different for the scenery? Is safe for female does not speak Spanish travel alone on the train?

Thank you in Advance!

Hi Hanna, thanks so much for the great questions!

First, I think Divisadero has the most breathtaking views of the canyons, so you’ll definitely want to spend some time there taking photos. You can find out more about Divisadero by clicking the link below: https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-divisadero-mexico/

Second, you can definitely take both the Chepe Regional and Chepe Express, however, you’ll end up paying a little more than if you were to travel on just one train. Another option may be to take a bus from Chihuahua to Divisadero (you’ll need to transfer in Creel), then catch the Express onward from there.

You will need to pre-order your Express tickets as there’s nowhere to buy them in the towns along the Chepe route. You can buy Chepe Regional Economic tickets onboard if the train isn’t full.

When it comes to choosing where to start your Chepe journey, I prefer to head from Chihuahua towards Los Mochis as the scenery just keeps getting better. Of course, it’s going to be amazing either way and I would decide based on flight availability and where you’re heading afterwards. For example, if you’re going to La Paz or Mazatlan after the Copper Canyon, then it would be best to start in Chihuahua and end in Los Mochis. If, on the other hand, you’re going to Mexico City or Oaxaca, it might be best to end in Chihuahua as there are probably more flight options from there.

Lastly, there are usually other tourists on board the train and Chepe staff so you’re not alone. I’ve never felt unsafe on the train but it’s always good to take precautions when travelling anywhere. You can learn more about safety tips for the Copper Canyon by clicking on this link: https://visitcoppercanyon.com/copper-canyon-mexico-safety/

I hope you have a fantastic time!

HOLA! Which direction is best? I’m planning to do a family trip July 23(1 week). THNX

Hi Elia, thanks for the comment!

I think Divisadero is a must, especially with a family, as the Adventure Park will be very exciting for all ages. Not to mention, Divisadero has some of the best canyon views. Follow the link below to learn more about Divisadero:

https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-divisadero-mexico/

Creel will also have a lot of great outdoor activities that would suit a family vacation. You can learn more about Creel by clicking the link below:

https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-creel/

Happy planning, Elia!

Great site! Leaving Beautiful BC for Chihuahua in a week.

Thanks for the compliment, John. I hope you have a wonderful trip!

We are traveling on bicycles and we will be near Creel the end of February/early March. Are bicycles allowed on the trains? Thanks for all your hard work!

Hi Meilani,

The Chepe Regional doesn’t have any specific area for bicycles and they may not allow them on if the trains are full. The Chepe Express does have a dedicated luggage car so you may have better luck with that.

I’d love to know how you fared with the bikes as I’ve received this question before and I currently don’t have a solid answer.

I need help I have emailed the email address on the website 10 days ago to get tickets and i have not been able to get a response. I have tried calling with no luck i will be there in 3 weeks and would love to know i have reservations. Any suggestions?

I’m sorry to hear about this inconvenience. March can be a busy time for El Chepe and it would be best to have those reservations in advance.

Have you tried contacting Chepe through their website? Here is a link to their contact form: http://www.chepe.com.mx/contacto

If you haven’t already tried the numbers on my website, you can give them a try: 011 52 614 439 7212, or +52 1 614 439 7212. They also provide this phone number on the Chepe site: 01800 1224 373.

I believe there are only 2 people working in the ticketing office at any given time so it can be difficult to get a hold of someone. You may have better luck in the mornings, between 8 and 10 am (MST) and avoid calling during lunch hours.

Be persistent and continue to send those emails. Someone should get back to you eventually.

Best of luck!

Gosh I am not sure what I am missing, but will you please confirm the cost of a Tourist ticket between El Fuerte to Creel on the Chepe Regional? I am looking for round trip price in MXP. We are planning our visit in March. Thanks so much!!

Hi Julie, thanks for the comment!

Chepe doesn’t really sell round trip tickets for the Regional train, at least not with a discount like they do with the Chepe Express.

However, you should still be able to plan a round trip between El Fuerte and Creel. Below is a link to Chepe ticket prices: http://www.chepe.com.mx/assets/pdf/esp/TarifaChepeRegional.pdf

Creel to El Fuerte, one-way, should cost 1,380 MXP for a Tourist Class ticket. This should also entitle you to get off at a couple of stops in between (maybe Bahuichivo and Divisadero!). Just be careful about planning because the Regional train doesn’t run every day.

Happy Planning!

Your site has been very informative. We are close to booking our train tickets from Creel to El fuerte, your bus info and booking online has been very helpful. we are going in January.

Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback, Bernadette! I’m so glad the site was helpful and I hope you have an excellent trip! And don’t forget, the Chepe Express schedule will be changing as of January 11th, 2019.

Hello Kayla, I am planning to visit Copper Canyon in Feb 2019. Tentative schedule is board Chepe Express on 12th Feb at 7:30am… spend Tuesday in Divisadre – stay the night in Divisardro ( any economical hotel suggestions?) – Explore Canyon again on Wed & board a train in the afternoon/evening for El Fuerte & spend a night in El Fuerte – Explore El Fuerto on Thu & board a train to Los Mochis in the late afternoon/ evening -arrive in Los Mochis on Thu night & spend a nigh & spend 2 nights in Los Mochis…Board a train back to Creel on Saturday morning to arrive in creel on Saturday evening….. In order to cater to this iteneriary what can you suggest for train journet? what hotels do you suggest? please feel free to make suggestions to make this trip more worthwhile & economical…. Thanks & Regards, Viva

Hi Viva! I’d be happy to make some suggestions to make your trip more economical! To truly save money I’d suggest riding the Chepe Regional exclusively, as it’s much cheaper. You can read more about the difference between the Regional and the Express by clicking this link -> https://visitcoppercanyon.com/visit-copper-canyon-train/#tickets

As for hotels, you can find my suggestions for Divisadero here -> https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-divisadero-mexico/#hotels I also have suggestions for Creel: https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-creel/#hotels El Fuerte: https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-el-fuerte-sinaloa/#hotels and Los Mochis: https://visitcoppercanyon.com/topolobampo-and-los-mochis-sinaloa/#hotels If you’re starting your journey in Creel then you can take a bus over to Divisadero, as it gives you more flexibility than the train and is a bit cheaper. I’d also suggest taking a bus between El Fuerte and Los Mochis to save money. Find more information about transport between these two cities by clicking here -> https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-el-fuerte-sinaloa/#getthere Your current itinerary doesn’t quite line up with the train schedules (the Chepe can be very confusing!). Hopefully this link to the timetables can help you plan your itinerary. Link to timetables -> https://visitcoppercanyon.com/visit-copper-canyon-train/#combinedSchedules Please let me know if you have any specific questions once you’ve worked out the itinerary.

Greetings from Toronto: Wonderful site. Do the trains run everyday including Xmas Day & Boxing Day? Thanks\Les

That’s a great question, Les! I’m almost certain that the trains run on their regular schedules throughout the year, regardless of holidays. When you book your tickets the company should let you know for sure whether this is the case. Just remember, The Chepe Regional doesn’t run in the same direction every day, only the Chepe Express does that (until Jan. 11th, 2019, when the Express schedule will change). Also, keep in mind that Christmas is actually a very busy time in the Copper Canyon so be sure to book your hotels ahead of time. I find the best deals are at Booking.com .

Are dogs allowed on the train, and in hotels?

Hi Paula! As far as I know, dogs are, unfortunately, not permitted on EL Chepe. However, I’ve reached out to the company to find out for sure and I’m waiting for their reply. I’ll post it here as soon as I find out.

does the train still take vehicles Los Moches to chihuahua

Thanks for your inquiry, Roger. Unfortunately, El Chepe doesn’t transport vehicles, just people. The tracks are used by freight trains, but I’m not sure if they will transport individual vehicles and may only work with large companies. You can check out their site here: https://www.ferromex.com.mx/

Thanks a lot for these informations. Very helpful ! Do you know if it’s possible to board with unboxed bicycles in the Regional train ? We are in low season, the train will not be full, but on the Chepe website they allow only one luggage…

Hey! Thank you so much for your comment! I’m not entirely sure about bicycles but I’ve never seen one and as there’s no luggage car on the Chepe Regional I doubt they’d allow them. I’d suggest contacting Chepe directly to be sure. Here is a link to their contact page: http://www.chepe.com.mx/contacto

Sounds interesting. How to connect from El Paso?

Thanks for your comment, Aaron! There’s a bus that runs between El Paso and Chihuahua. From Chihuahua, you can catch El Chepe. Here’s a link to a page with a bit more information: https://visitcoppercanyon.com/things-to-do-in-chihuahua/#getthere

This is unbelievably informative but I’m still a bit confused. We are in Chihuahua tonight and want to take the Express train tomorrow disembarking at Divisadero for one night then going on to El Fuerte the following day. I see now that won’t work because we would have to be in Creel at 6AM rather than here in Chihuahua. My question is, do you know if we can buy our Express tickets here in Chihuahua tomorrow morning ( to board the following day in Divisadero to El Fuerte ) but go ahead and take the Regional to Divisadero tomorrow? We have already booked our room at the Posada Barrancas for tomorrow night. I realize you may not see this message but thank you either way. Awesome and informative site.

I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to respond earlier. I hope everything worked out for you. If you read this and you feel like sharing your experience I’d love to hear it as it will certainly help me write future articles and help other readers plan their trip.

Wow! This was nice and thorough. I’ve been thinking about doing it for years. BTW I found you through Travel Blogger Buzz.

Thanks for the comment! I really hope you get to make the trip, it’s such a fantastic experience 🙂

An expertly crafted custom tour of the Copper Canyon ensures your time is spent absorbing this outstanding train journey and the breathtaking scenery around you

Copper Canyon - Urique Canyon

The area known as Copper Canyon is a region in northwest Mexico that hosts some of the most spectacular and stunning natural scenery in the country. The Copper Canyon territory is composed of a series of twenty canyons, formed over the years by six rivers.

Our travel partner has been taking visitors to the Copper Canyon for over 20 years and specializes in custom-made tours that take care of all the details and enable you, your family, and companions to get the most from your visit to this most remarkable region of Mexico.

Enjoy breathtaking scenery on a remarkable train journey

You can experience the Copper Canyon by hiking, biking, trekking, horseback, or four-wheeling; however, by far the most popular route is to take the Copper Canyon train line—that runs between Los Mochis and Chihuahua City.

The Copper Canyon railway is a stunning piece of engineering achievement. The railway line is over 390 miles in length, crosses 39 bridges (the longest bridge is over 1500 feet long) and 86 tunnels (the longest over a mile in length). The line crosses some of Mexico’s most rugged and wild natural terrain; hugging the edge of mountains and traversing deep ravines across its bridges. The scenery it travels through is truly breathtaking.

Choose a custom tour to get the most from your visit to the canyons

A custom tour of Copper Canyon can begin in Los Mochis ( Airport: LMM ), Mazatlán ( Airport: MZT ) (from where you will be provided with ground transportation to the beautifully picturesque town of El Fuerte where you’ll board the train); or Chihuahua City ( Airport: CUU ).

Expertly crafted tours. Our travel partner’s tours are underpinned by over two decades of experience, and provide guides and transportation exclusively assigned to your party. As part of your tour package, all your transportation, accommodations, food, and assistance services will be provided to ensure that your time is spent absorbing the experience and not concerning about the travel logistics.

Airport transfers. You will be met personally at the airport and swiftly transported to your comfortable accommodations in preparation for your copper canyon tour.  At the end of your tour, you’ll be transported back to the airport of your choice.

Accommodations. Hotels in the canyons are attractive colonial-style hotels, and all rooms have private baths.  They provide comfort amidst the natural scenic locations where they are situated; you can expect excellent service with friendly and attentive staff, and the water and food are safe.

Independent or fully guided. Our travel partner offers independent tours complemented by a detailed information packet that is tailored to your itinerary and that will assist you as you engage in your day-by-day activities. Optionally you can choose to have an English-speaking guide for an extra fee to accompany you on the entire trip and thus give you the most complete experience in Copper Canyon.

Flexible itineraries. Custom tours are offered with varying durations from five to eight days’ stay, to flex with your available schedule and budget.  Shorter itineraries of four nights’ stay focus primarily on the extraordinary train ride through the canyons, whereas the longer 6-night+ tours enable you to experience more of this outstanding region, interact with the tribes and communities who live locally, and take in additional day tours.

Copper Canyon tours starting in Los Mochis, Mazatlán, or Chihuahua City

We recommend you begin your tour in Los Mochis or Mazatlán, and you can end your tour where you began (complete a loop); or you can elect to begin and end your tour at one of the other start/end points.

If you begin the tour in Los Mochis or Mazatlán , you will be met at the airport and provided with comfortable ground transportation from there to El Fuerte , where you’ll be accommodated overnight at a charming colonial-style hotel, and board the train early in the morning.  Optionally, you can include side tours in and around El Fuerte.  It’s a 90-minute road trip from Los Mochis to El Fuerte, or a 6-hour road trip from Mazatlán that includes travel along a scenic oceanside highway.

If you begin the tour in Chihuahua City , you will board the train from there; optionally you can include side tours around Chihuahua before or after your canyon tour.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
