Serengeti and Ngorongoro Safari Packages
The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater really do belong together on a safari itinerary, and not just because they’re geographical neighbors. These are two of Africa’s most glorious attractions, each with its own magic that combines a wonderful wildlife-viewing experience and iconic northern Tanzanian landscapes. The Serengeti is a classic savannah terrain filled with animals against the backdrop of an endless horizon, while Ngorongoro is a more intimate experience, like a lost world of wildlife down on the crater floor. Put them together and you have an extraordinary safari experience to look forward to.

7 Questions About Combined Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safaris
Answered by
Anthony ham.
Why is the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater an ideal combination?
“You’re in for such a treat on your Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari because these two world-famous safari destinations complement each other perfectly. Each on its own would be a remarkable trip. But together they’re something special. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro have lots of things in common. Both have astonishing wildlife. Both have beautiful landscapes that, each in its own way, highlight a signature aspect of East African landscapes. Put them together and you can see the Big Five, maybe even a couple of times over. But the subtle differences mean you can get a taste of two worlds. In Ngorongoro you get the most beautiful scenery of northern Tanzania’s Crater Highlands, with deep greens and blues, as well as black rhino, lion, hyena, buffalo, elephant, flamingo and more. Not far away in the Serengeti, you can enjoy the big cats, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and so many additional species; they’re surrounded by the vast savannah plains and flat-topped acacias that are the basis for East Africa’s incredible wildlife offering.”
What can I expect from a safari to the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater?
“On your Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari you can expect one of the best safaris imaginable. Your safari will almost certainly involve remarkable wildlife encounters (possibly including the Big Five) and just-as-remarkable views of beautiful crater and savannah landscapes. There is nowhere else in Africa where you can enjoy a combination quite like this. And when it comes to the wildlife you can see, these two destinations have both quantity and quality in terms of animals. From a more practical point of view, your safari may include a couple of nights at Ngorongoro Crater (giving one full day to explore the crater and surrounds), and as many days in the Serengeti as you can spare. How your safari works more specifically (for example, whether you fly or drive between the two) will vary from one safari package and one safari operator to the next.”
How much will this safari cost?
“There are almost as many different answers to this question as there are safari trips and packages on offer. Factors that determine how much you end up paying are many. For a start, prices vary greatly depending on the accommodation you choose, from budget camping options to high-end luxury tented camps and lodges. Another consideration is the season in which you travel, although high season (which runs from July to March) takes up so much of the year that there aren’t always many options. It can cost as little as half the high-season price if you travel during low season, although you may have to contend with rains and difficult driving conditions as a consequence. The other major thing to take into account when calculating potential costs is the type of safari you want to have. Private safaris are the most expensive, group safaris are cheaper, and self-drive safaris may sit somewhere in between. Whether or not your safari includes any flights will also affect the final cost. As a broad guide, count on paying at least US$150 per person per day for the cheapest camping safari and around US$500 per person per day for a luxury private safari, although this latter figure can go even higher.”
What is the ideal holiday length for a trip to the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater?
“No matter how long you spend in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, you’ll still wish you had more time here. That being the case, the simple answer is that you should aim to spend as much time here as you can! Realistically, the optimum time to spend on trips like these is at least one week. Most safaris only spend one day (usually two nights) exploring the crater floor, and this should be a minimum for the Ngorongoro leg of the safari. With a little more time, you could spend a further day or more exploring the crater rim, visiting local Maasai communities, and/or getting to know some of the other attractions of the Crater Highlands. For the Serengeti, aim to spend at least four or five days exploring the park. That said, this is a vast national park and if you want to get to know more than one area well, you will need to spend at least a week in the Serengeti alone, and even up to 10 days if you want to include the north. If you’re traveling between the Serengeti and Ngorongoro by road, you’ll need to factor close to a full day’s driving into your plans.”
What is the best time to visit the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro?
“The best time to visit both Ngorongoro and the Serengeti is from June to September. The Serengeti is usually also excellent right through until February. These are the best months for enjoying optimum weather and wildlife-viewing conditions. Something else to factor in to your planning is the great wildebeest migration as it passes through the Serengeti. If you’re hoping to see the migration when you’re here, there are some guidelines that you’ll need to think about. In January and February, the wildebeest are usually in the Serengeti’s south giving birth to countless calves. By around June or July the migration is usually somewhere close to the Serengeti’s Western Corridor. In most years, it reaches the north in August or September when it crosses into Kenya’s Masai Mara.”
Which other parks can I visit on a Serengeti/Ngorongoro Crater safari?
“There are lots of different tours, trips and packages to consider if you want to add on some further parks to your Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari. If you are looking to expand your safari, remember that these two destinations form part of what’s known as Tanzania’s Northern safari circuit, and most safaris of this nature begin in Arusha. The most obvious parks to add, because they lie on or close to the route between Arusha and Ngorongoro, are Tarangire National Park (which is famous for its elephants and giant baobab trees) and Lake Manyara National Park (tree-climbing lions, elephants and abundant birdlife). Closer to Arusha, Arusha National Park (with Mt Meru as its centerpiece) or climbing Mt Kilimanjaro are also possible, although the latter alone will likely add more than a week to your overall safari. Closer to both Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, and far less crowded, Lake Eyasi is the fascinating homeland of the Hadzabe people, while Lake Natron and Ol Doinyo Lengai are stunning destinations in their own right north of Ngorongoro or east of the Serengeti.”
How do I get from the Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti?
“There are two ways to get between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti: by road or by plane. Both are possible, and which one you take may depend on how much time you have and how much you want to pay: flying is quicker and more expensive. If you’re driving from Ngorongoro to the Serengeti, the drive is a beautiful one through Maasai country. Expect to encounter Maasai villages and herders along the way, and don’t miss a stop at Olduvai (Oldupai) Gorge and Museum. Two other things to watch out for along the way: the views to the west toward the Serengeti from the Ngorongoro Crater rim, and north from Naabi Hill, the Serengeti National Park headquarters, will give you a superb overview of the savannah plains that seem to go on forever. If you’re flying, it will be in a small plane from one of the little airstrips around the Ngorongoro Crater rim to an airstrip in the Serengeti (depending on where in the park you’re staying). The views along the way are miraculous.”

Serengeti Tours from Nairobi (2024 – 2025)
wondering if a Serengeti Tour from Nairobi is possible YES. Here is a List of Serengeti Tours from Nairobi save 10% on your booking with Kabira Safaris.
Question from Client? We are planning a honeymoon trip to Tanzania and were wondering if it’s possible to get a safari starting from Nairobi, to Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and then finish in Arusha (from where we will fly to Zanzibar)
Answer to the Client? Ok, well the simple answer is yes it is possible. As to whether it’s a good idea is another matter. This depends on lots of things eg, your timescale (for the whole trip and how long you intend to spend at each place), your budget, how you are intending to get from one place to another (fly or drive – be aware there are long distances between these places and you have to cross the border at some point), time of year of travel, etc plus many other things. You probably need to give us more information. Generally on this forum people will recommend you stick to one country unless you have a lot of time and a large budget. As this is the Tanzania forum most will suggest you just stick to Tanzania . You could include Tarangire and Lake Manyara if you wanted and have time then fly to Zanzibar . This will be less complicated, cheaper, and less rushed so all in all probability be more enjoyable. Anyway, give us a bit more information.

Day 1 nairobi.
Arrive at anytime.
Prepare for tomorrow’s early morning by checking out the hotel bar with your newest friends. Travelling can take a lot out of you so sit back, fill those food and drink needs, and spend a chill night becoming familiar with your group and CEO.
Exclusive Inclusions:
Day 2 nairobi/arusha.
Hop in the shuttle and hit the road in style as you cross through the semi-arid lands of the Maasai people en route to Arusha, Tanzania. Marvel at the epic views of mighty Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance and swap stories with your road trip buddies!
Meals included:
Day 3 arusha/serengeti national park.
Well folks it’s time for the Africa you have all imagined, the experience that has been depicted over and over again in books, movies, and television. So grab those cameras, purchase a quirky bucket hat, and head out on a wildlife safari drive into one of the most famous national parks in Africa; the Serengeti.
Get ready for abundant wildlife, vast golden plains dotted with thorny acacia trees, and hippo-filled rivers as you begin a 3-day and 2-night excursion into the park itself and the great Ngorongoro Crater.
Day 4 Serengeti National Park/Ngorongoro
Grab your buddies and jump aboard for one last morning safari in the Serengeti. As the sun rises higher in the sky watch the animal kingdom come to life in this grassland savannah before returning to break down camp.
Then it’s on to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, famous for Africa’s best wildlife viewing. Get ready for epic views from the crater rim and watch as animals meander around below drinking water from the permanent supply on the crater floor. You’ll be setting up camp in the late afternoon at a site near the crater rim and then you can spend the rest of the day enjoying one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on the planet.
Day 5 Ngorongoro/Arusha
It’s time to experience “Africa’s Garden of Eden” on a more personal level. Today, venture down to the crater floor where the group will embark on a final safari experience. Have those cameras charged and at the ready because, let’s face it if you are going to see any wildlife this would be the place (and we are so excited for you)!
The animals are bound to this area by the crater walls and the enclosed nature of the crater means its own ecosystem has been created think; rich grasslands, swamps, acacia forests, and Lake Makat so get ready to see some magic.
With full camera rolls the group will exit the crater in the late morning and travel back to Arusha. Swap stories along the way, pick those favourite photos from earlier, or simply sit back and let yourself enjoy the passing scenery as you cruise along.
Day 6 Arusha/Dar es Salaam
Leave Arusha early and be on the lookout for the mighty Mt Kilimanjaro on the road towards Dar es Salaam and watch as the Tanzanian countryside passes by and the blue waters of the Indian Ocean make their debut.
The city started as a fishing village in the mid 19th century before becoming a port and trading centre. The group will spend the night here before embarking for the island beaches of Zanzibar.
Want to cut travel time in half and spend more time in Stone Town? Pre-book the Zanzibar Express on the checkout page to include this optional activity on your tour.
Day 7 Dar es Salaam/Stone Town
After the jam packed last few days of this trip where you are going next is going to be just what you needed. Wake in Dar es Salaam before hopping on the ferry to the paradise of Zanzibar.
Get ready for picturesque island beaches that will make you contemplate staying here and living off the grid. Few places on this planet are as entrancing and exotic as this Tanzanian archipelago so get ready to enjoy it, take loads of pictures, and relax in a place that has long lured backpackers and adventurers to it’s sandy shores.
Day 8 Beach day in Zanzibar
Roll out of bed this morning in Stone Town and explore the heart of Zanzibar. Wander the winding historic unpaved alleyways of Stone Town passing by balconies and gigantic wooden carved doors along the way.
Get lost and spend hours exploring the streets and squares, drinking potent coffee from pavement vendors and buying sweetmeats from tiny cafes. Keep an eye out for tinga-tinga paintings, antique shops, beautifully printed cloths (kangas and kikois worn by local people), little carved chests with copper inlays, and spices – all beautiful presents or memories to take home. Transfer to the tropical haven of Jambiani for a relaxing few days as a group.
Day 9 Beach day in Zanzibar
Wake up in this island paradise and get ready to seize the day. You’ll be exploring one of the world’s great cultural crossroads… think Africa meets Arabia and add the Indian Ocean into the mix as the cherry on top.
The day is yours to spend as you choose; head out for a diving experience, grab some goggles and go snorkelling, hop aboard a sailing trip, or just lounge on the beach and relax. Zanzibar’s tropical setting, unique culture, and active beach-party scene make this place a very enjoyable East African Indian Ocean experience.
Day 10 Stone Town
Your most difficult task today is going to be pulling yourself away from the beauty that surrounds you in Jambiani. Travel back to Stone Town on the other side of the island and explore the heart of Zanzibar.
The tour ends in the late morning.

Frequently asked questions
Where is serengeti national park located .
Serengeti National Park is located in Tanzania, East Africa
How do i get to Serengeti National Park
Guests may travel to the Serengeti by vehicle (transfer, self-drive, or guided safari) or by flight on a light aircraft to one of the Serengeti airstrips in the national park. Your journey usually starts from the town of Arusha -which is considered to be the gateway to the Serengeti- or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
How long does it take to fly to Serengeti National Park
Most Serengeti safaris start from Arusha Airport (ARK). A flight from Arusha to one of the main Serengeti airstrips takes between 1 hour and 10 minutes and 2 hours and 40 minutes, depending on the airstrip location. Bear in mind that departure times and routings may vary depending on traveler requirements and local weather conditions. As these flights service multiple lodges and airstrips it is possible that multiple stops are made en route to your destination (with a maximum of three landings). When starting from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) one should add approximately 30 minutes to the above-mentioned flight times.
Which animals will i see in Serengeti National Park
In wilderness areas, such as the Serengeti, specific animal sightings can never be guaranteed as wildlife roams freely in a massive area. Consequently, we are unable to tell you in advance whether you will be seeing leopards, cheetahs, lions, or other wildlife species. However, as you are well aware, Serengeti National Park is world-renowned for its incredible wildlife numbers, big cats, and the biggest wildlife event in the world: the Great Migration. Serengeti National Park boasts all Big Five species (elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion, and leopard) and your chances of seeing these species are good. The Serengeti ecosystem is home to more species and individuals than any other wildlife area in Africa.
Do i need binoculars for safari in Serengeti National Park
We definitely recommend bringing a pair of binoculars as it adds to the fun! Bringing a pair results in increased visibility when staying in the Serengeti, and brings those faraway creatures a little bit closer (which can make all the difference). At some of the lodges, your guide will carry a pair of binoculars in the safari vehicle, but this is never guaranteed.
How far in advance can i book my safari to Serengeti ?
Lodges in Serengeti National Park operate at high occupancy levels, especially during peak periods. Therefore, we recommend that you start planning your Serengeti safari 8 to 12 months in advance. If you wish to travel during peak periods (e.g. Christmas, Easter, June - October) we strongly recommend that you start planning between 12 and 18 months in advance. For some Serengeti lodges - when it concerns peak periods - it is not uncommon to find they are fully booked two (!) years in advance. Also, when traveling with family (children), or in a group, one should start planning as early as possible: due to their modest scale, the lodges have a limited number of suitable rooms.
