10 Cruise Lines with the Best All-Inclusive Alcohol Packages

March 15, 2016 by Katie Rosbottom View All On 1 Page

One of the most frustrating aspects of cruising is that alcoholic beverages are never included in the package price, leading to frighteningly high bar tabs at the end of your trip. However, many cruise lines offer all-inclusive drink bundles that you may or may not be aware of. These are the top ten companies to sail with if you’re interested in boozin’ and cruisin’ affordably.

1. Norwegian Cruise Lines

Norwegian offers its guests the choice of two beverage packages: the “Corks and Caps Package” and the “Ultimate Beverage Package.” The “Corks and Caps” costs $59 per person per day and includes a selection of soda and juices, beer and wines by the glass ($15 or less). The “Ultimate Beverage Package” costs $79 per person, per day, and includes everything in the “Corks and Caps Package” plus liquor and cocktails (all drinks $15 or less). Both packages require an additional 18% gratuity.

Which Cruise Lines Include Alcohol? (Budget & Luxury Guide) – Drinks Lists

Cruises are often advertised as ‘all-inclusive’ but this all-inclusive fare rarely includes alcohol.

There are a number of cruise lines, however, that do. In this post, we will be looking at the cruise lines that include alcohol as standard in the cruise fare.

Many cruise lines do offer drinks packages that, when purchased in advance, can make the cruise fare closer to being all-inclusive.

The following all-inclusive cruise lines include alcohol:

Mainstream cruise lines.

There are VERY few cruise lines that I would consider budget/mainstream that include alcohol in the cruise fare.

Marella and Celestyal both do and I have cruised with both.

I have been on a few cruises with Marella and I have always been extremely impressed by the value for money they offer.

I would also recommend Celestyal Cruises for anybody wanting to explore the Greek Islands and try a line that offers a real Greek experience.

Marella Cruises Include Alcohol

Marella is a British cruise line, formerly known as Thomson. Their cruise fare is all-inclusive by standard and includes hundreds of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks.

Marella Discovery Cruise Families

What Alcohol is Included on Marella Cruises?

Marella Cruises include a variety of alcoholic drinks as standard on all of their cruises. Including but not limited to:

  • Draught Beers
  • Classic Cocktails
  • Frozen Cocktails
  • Aperitifs, Liqueurs, Ports and Sherries
  • Gins, Vodkas, Rums and Tequilas
  • Whiskies and Brandies

Soda, juices, and Mocktails are also included.

To see the full list of the drinks available on Marella cruises check out the post here:

Marella Cruises All Inclusive Drinks List

What Alcohol isn’t included?

When cruising with Marella it is possible to upgrade to a ‘premium’ beverage package. This costs in the region of £10 per day, and means you can have premium spirits, soda by the can (instead of fountain soda) and premium teas and coffees.

Drink packages on other cruise lines can cost over £90 per day – so £10 a day is an absolute bargain.

To find out more about all the things I love about Marella, read this article next:

5 Things I Love About Marella Cruises (Inclusions, Entertainment, Drinks and More)

Marella Cruises | Cruise Holidays 2023 / 2024 | TUI.co.uk

Celestyal Include Alcohol

Celestyal is a Greek cruise line that owns two ships, Celestyal Journey and Celestyal Discovery.

Celestyal cruises the Greek islands and often have more than one port stop per day.

I cruised with Celestyal on a 4-day cruise. We managed to visit 7 ports! I’ve never known a cruise line to do this before and it was amazing.

The ship I sailed on Celestyal Olympia, has now been scrapped but newer ships have been purchased.

Both their ships have previously sailed with other cruiselines before being refurbished and going into service with Celestyal.

To learn more about Celestyal check out the cruise diary I kept onboard my Celestyal cruise:

Celestyal Cruises: Review and Daily Photo Diary 2019

What Alcohol is Included on Celestyal Cruises?

Celestyal Cruises includes a variety of drinks including the following:

To see the full list of the drinks available on Celestyal Cruises check out the post here:

Celestyal Cruises All Inclusive Drinks List.

It is worth noting that soft drinks and coffees/teas are included in the cruise fare.

On most cruise lines (including Marella mentioned above) you have to pay extra if you want to have a variety of teas or coffees. They are free on Celestyal Cruises.

On Celestyal cruises, you will find that most bars have two menus.

One includes included drinks and the other you have to pay extra for. During my cruise, I didn’t order anything from the premium menu and instead always chose the drinks that were included.

The paid-for extra menu features premium spirits and a greater variety of beers, wines, and cocktails.

Luxury Cruise Lines

If you have a little more budget to play with it is worth looking into the luxury cruise lines below.

Viking Cruises Include Alcohol

Viking ocean cruises.

Viking ocean cruises include beer, wine, and soft drinks with dinner but don’t include drinks at any other time of the day.

I took a 4-night cruise with Viking into the Arctic Circle in pursuit of the midnight sun.

It was one of the best experiences of my life, if you can afford to cruise with Viking I can’t recommend it enough.

Viking does also have a premium drinks package available for purchase.

Viking Sea Cruise Ship Geiranger

Azamara Cruises Include Alcohol

Cruises with Azamara include some beers, wines, and selected spirits. The drinks are available all day but are not available to order through room service.

There are two packages that you can upgrade to – a premium package and an unlimited package.

These packages allow you to have a much wider choice of drinks. I sailed with Azamara and didn’t spend a penny on drinks.

Azamara is a little more affordable than some of the other luxury lines mentioned in this article.

Find out all about my cruise with Azamara here:

Seabourn Cruises Include Alcohol

All alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks are included in Seabourn cruises.

There may be a charge for things like a particularly expensive/rare bottle of wine but generally speaking, you’ll probably come away from your Seabourn cruise without any charges for drinks.

Silversea Cruises Include Alcohol

Silversea cruises include LOADS of drinks. Wine, beer, even champagne. Some premium spirits, champagnes, and spirits do have an extra charge – but these are few and far between.

Regent Seven Seas Include Alcohol

Regent Seven Seas offers unlimited complimentary drinks. Wines, spirits, beers, and champagnes.

The mini bar is even restocked daily!

“All-Inclusive” Cruise Lines That Don’t Include Alcohol:

Virgin voyages.

Virgin Voyages frequently advertise their cruises as being ‘all-inclusive’ but there is no alcohol included in the cruise fare.

The cruise fares do include a lot – Wi-Fi, Gratuities, and some basic drinks.

Virgin Voyages do not offer drinks packages. Cruisers must “Pay as you go” when it comes to drinks – as you would in bars and pubs on land.

I took a short cruise with Virgin onboard Scarlet Lady, check out the video below to see what I thought:

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian cruise line often describes their cruises as ‘all-inclusive’ but the basic cruise fare doesn’t include any drinks.

Norwegian often has promotions that include things such as drinks and speciality dining which can bring the cruise product more in line with that of an ‘all-inclusive cruise line.

Norwegian Cruise Line does offer a variety of drink packages similar to most other mainstream lines.

I rarely buy the drinks package, for me it’s just not worth it. Find out why here:

Drinks Packages Aren’t Worth it For Me – Here’s How I Decide (Price Lists & More)

Find out about the cruise I took on one of Norwegian’s newest ships, Norwegian Prima here:

River Cruises

Generally speaking, river cruises will include, at a minimum, wine and beer with meals.

Some river cruise lines include wine and beer at all times of the day and some river cruise lines will have all alcohol included.

Generally speaking, river cruises are usually more expensive than ocean cruises but this is because of the size of the ship and the amount included in the cruise fare.

Find out about the great-value river cruise I took with Tui here. Drinks were included at meal times.

Complete Guide to Cruise Drink Packages

Our Complete Guide to Cruise Drink Packages for 2023 breaks down the specifics of each cruise line's drink packages, prices, and inclusions.

Complete Guide to Cruise Drink Packages (2023)

Share this post:

Are you wondering if you should purchase one of the cruise drink packages on your next vacation? You are not alone, as it is a question we get quite often from fellow cruisers.

There are many factors involved in deciding if a beverage package is right for you. To help in your decision-making process, we have put together this complete guide to cruise line drink packages to help you sift through the different options. We cover plans, pricing, inclusions, and more.

Complete Guide to Cruise Line Drink Packages

What is a drink package on a cruise.

While some beverages are included in the standard cruise fare, many drinks will cost you extra money.

Complimentary beverages on most mainstream cruise lines include juice, non-bottled iced water, iced tea, tea, and brewed coffee.

Other beverages like specialty coffees, smoothies, fresh squeezed juice, soft drinks, bottled water, and energy drinks are all an additional fee. Likewise, all alcoholic beverages cost extra.

cruise lines include alcoholic beverages

Now, this is where a drink package comes into play. Basically, cruise lines offer various packages that guests can purchase for a flat fee per person, per day to enjoy all these up-charge beverages.

The packages, prices, and inclusions do vary by cruise line. So, we will go into more detail on each cruise line’s offerings a bit later.

EXCLUSIVE DEALS: Score Discounts on Your Next Cruise Vacation!

Cruise Drink Package Basics

While cruise drink packages do vary by cruise line, they almost all have certain inclusions and restrictions that you should know before buying one of the packages.

  • Drink packages are priced per person, per day.
  • You need to purchase the drink package for the entire cruise (not just select days).
  • An additional service charge or gratuity is added to the total purchase price of a drink package at checkout.
  • Once the cruise has begun, drink packages are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • Drink packages are for “personal consumption”, meaning no sharing of drinks with other cruisers that do not have a package.
  • Many cruise lines require all individuals in a stateroom to purchase a beverage package, so be sure to read all the terms and conditions.
  • Most packages cover beverages purchased at onboard restaurants and bars, and they may work on the cruise lines’ private islands as well.
  • Cruise drink packages often cover drinks up to a certain dollar amount. Afterwards, cruisers need to pay the difference for any drinks that are above this maximum allotment.
  • Most cruise line drink packages do not cover bottles of wine, bottles of liquor, mini-bar items, souvenir cup/specialty promotions, or room service purchases.
  • Many, but not all, cruise line drink packages are “unlimited” for the duration of the cruise.
  • Cruise lines reserve the right to deny service to individuals who are intoxicated, so enjoy responsibly.
  • Many cruise lines offer discounts on drink packages when purchased pre-cruise.

What cruise lines offer free drink packages?

Some luxury cruise lines are truly all-inclusive, meaning all beverages are included in the price of the cruise. However, that is not the case for the more mainstream cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and the like.

However, there are some cases where you might be able to score a free drink package. Norwegian Cruise Line is known for its Free at Sea promotion . This promotion gives guests up to five free perks, including an unlimited open bar package.

Other cruise lines give free drink packages to guests booking the most luxurious cabins on the ship. For example, MSC Cruises’ Yacht Club guests receive a free Premium Extra Drink Package.

Further, other cruise lines offer all-inclusive pricing options. Celebrity Cruises has its All Included fare. Princess Cruises has the Plus Package and the Premier Package, and Holland America has the Have It All fare. These fares bundle a drink package with other inclusions like WiFi or gratuities for one set fare.

Harmony of the Seas Beverage Review 2017

Which cruise line has the cheapest drink package?

When examining the drink packages offered by all the major cruise lines listed below, you can see that the prices and the inclusions do vary quite a bit. Though, the cheapest drink package is found on MSC Cruises, followed by Holland America and Carnival.

On the other hand, Norwegian Cruise Line has the most expensive drink packages.

What cruise lines have unlimited drink packages?

A majority of cruise line drink packages are unlimited. However, the Carnival brands do impose a drink limit of 15 drinks. This includes Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line. You should read the fine print when purchasing, as this drink limit sometimes refers to only alcoholic drinks and other times to total drinks.

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises all have unlimited drink packages. The more premium and luxury cruise lines do as well.

Is it worth getting a drink package on a cruise?

This is a question that only you can answer. Essentially, the question is whether you will consume enough beverages to make the purchase “worth it”. Knowing your drink preferences, onboard drink prices, and typical consumption, you can estimate whether or not you would hit the “break even” price point.

Other considerations include the length of the cruise, how many ports of call are on the itinerary, and if you get any benefits from cruise line loyalty programs.

For instance, will you be able to sustain the same drinking pattern over the course of a 10-day or 14-day cruise? If your cruise is port intensive, will you be on the ship enough to make good use of your drink package? Do you get free drinks because of your status in a loyalty program with the cruise line?

What You Need to Know About Bringing Alcohol on a Cruise

It’s also important to know that many cruise lines allow you to bring a limited amount of alcohol onboard on embarkation day.

Overall, cruise drink packages certainly do offer convenience, as you never have to worry about the bar tab at the end of the cruise! They also make your cruise feel more all inclusive. Still, there are certain instances where they could be a waste of money . So, you will need to weigh the pros and cons for yourself before you decide to purchase one or not.

Of course, if you wish to forego a beverage package, you can always pay a la carte for your drinks purchased on the ship.

I think you need to also take into consideration what the drinks cost on each line. A certain drink I like might be $9 on one line and within the drinks package limit but it can cost $13 on another line and over the drinks package limit. I know for certain that Royal Caribbean has a much higher per drink cost than Celebrity, HAL and Princess. So the RC package may cost the same as the other lines, it will not get you the drinks you want to drink without an up charge per drink.

Great point Judi. Appreciate the feedback. Each line had different drink limits which can have an impact on your decision to get a drink package. Thanks for reading.

I don’t take the drink package because my husband doesn’t drink and they want you to pay for both people its ridiculous. Plus who in their right sober minds are going to drink 15 drinks a day. Not for me!!

Don’t forget, these drink packages also include sodas, juices, mocktails and specialty coffees. I might have a bloody mary in the a.m. then a fruity cocktail in the afternoon, and an after dinner cordial. The rest of the time I can enjoy non-alcoholic drinks. So I am in my right sober mind and enjoy 15 beverages a day.

can you get cans of jim beam bourbon on the packages

Hi Mark. Interesting question. What do you mean by “cans” of Jim Beam? Bottle service is not covered on most cruise line packages. You could certainly get plenty of Jim Beam drinks on the rocks, but one drink at a time. Of course, a bartender can also cut you off. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for reading. Happy cruising.

Explore cruise offerings for cocktails, wine, beer, soda and more.

Cruise drink packages can provide incredible value for people who plan to regularly imbibe on their voyage and want the convenience of an unlimited open bar package – whereas they may not be a good deal for light drinkers. Other options include alcohol-free drink packages, which let cruisers indulge in soft drinks, hot chocolate, specialty coffees and a range of other nonalcoholic beverages.

Whether or not to get the drink package is a question all cruisers face, and there's no perfect answer for everyone. Read on to learn about the drink packages offered by the major cruise lines and what each beverage package includes.

Expert tip: The price of each beverage package will vary from sailing to sailing and may change at any time. Also note that cruise drink packages are almost always nontransferable and nonrefundable, and that everyone in your cabin needs to buy a package. If kids are cruising with adults who purchase an alcoholic drink package, a nonalcoholic package must be purchased for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drink packages can be worth it on a cruise if you consume enough beverages to justify the cost of a package. If a drink package you're considering costs $85 per day, for example, you can try to estimate whether you would drink enough alcoholic drinks, specialty coffees and sodas to add up to or exceed this cost.

If you're a light drinker, these packages may not be a good deal for you at all.

Because drink packages are frequently discounted before a cruise, it makes sense to buy one pre-departure if you can. Also note that some cruise lines only offer drink packages on the day of embarkation and stop offering them for the rest of the cruise.

Cruise drink packages can never be shared. With all the major cruise lines, each guest in your cabin must purchase a package.

Now that we’ve explored the cruise lines that offer inclusive alcohol packages, let’s dive into the different beverage options you can expect while onboard.

Beverage Packages

When it comes to alcohol-inclusive cruises, cruise lines offer a variety of beverage packages to cater to different preferences and budgets. These packages typically provide guests with a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks throughout their voyage. Let’s explore some common beverage packages you may encounter:

  • All-Inclusive Packages: These packages often include unlimited alcoholic beverages, such as beer, wine, and spirits. Guests can enjoy a variety of drinks without worrying about additional costs. Some cruise lines may offer different tiers of all-inclusive packages, allowing guests to choose the level of premium drinks they prefer.
  • Classic Beverage Packages: These packages typically include a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, such as cocktails, wines, beers, sodas, and specialty coffees. Guests can indulge in their favorite beverages throughout their cruise without paying for each individual drink.
  • Beer and Wine Packages: For those who prefer beer and wine over spirits and cocktails, cruise lines may offer packages that focus specifically on these beverages. With these packages, guests can enjoy a variety of beers and wines without worrying about the costs adding up.
  • Non-Alcoholic Beverage Packages: For guests who prefer non-alcoholic options, cruise lines often provide packages that include a variety of soft drinks, juices, and specialty teas and coffees. These packages cater to those who want to stay refreshed without consuming alcohol.

Keep in mind that the availability and pricing of beverage packages may vary between cruise lines. Some cruise lines may include beverage packages as part of their all-inclusive offerings, while others may offer them as optional add-ons. It’s important to review the details of each cruise line’s beverage packages to understand what is included and any potential restrictions.

When considering a beverage package, it’s also crucial to assess your own drinking habits and preferences. If you plan on enjoying several alcoholic drinks throughout the day and evening, an all-inclusive or classic beverage package may be the most cost-effective option. However, if you are a more casual drinker or prefer non-alcoholic beverages, a non-alcoholic package may be more suitable.

Now that you have an idea of the beverage package options available, let’s explore the types of beverages that are typically included in these packages.

Types of Beverages Included

These may include a variety of soft drinks, juices, mocktails, sodas, specialty teas, and coffees. So, if you prefer to abstain from alcohol or simply want a break from alcoholic beverages, there are plenty of refreshing alternatives available.

It’s worth mentioning that the specific brands and labels of alcoholic beverages provided in the packages may vary. Some cruise lines may include premium brands as part of their all-inclusive offerings, while others may have a more limited selection. It’s always a good idea to check the details of the beverage package to understand what specific drinks and brands are included.

These are just a few examples of the activities and entertainment options available onboard an alcohol-inclusive cruise. Each cruise line offers its own unique set of experiences, ensuring there’s something to suit every interest and preference.

It’s important to note that while alcohol may be included in your beverage package, it’s essential to drink responsibly and be aware of your alcohol consumption, especially when participating in activities that require focus and coordination. The cruise staff are trained to prioritize your safety and well-being, so if you need assistance or have any concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to them.

Now that we’ve explored onboard activities and entertainment, let’s move on to discussing the dining options and alcohol inclusion during meal times.

Dining Options and Alcohol Inclusion

One of the highlights of an alcohol-inclusive cruise is the wide array of dining options available onboard. Cruise ships are renowned for their exceptional culinary experiences, and the inclusion of alcohol adds to the enjoyment of your meals. Let’s explore the dining options and alcohol inclusion during meal times:

1. Main Dining Rooms: Cruise ships typically feature main dining rooms that offer a variety of delicious cuisines. When dining in these grand venues, you can often choose from a selection of complimentary wines or other alcoholic beverages that perfectly complement your meal.

2. Specialty Restaurants: Many cruise lines have specialty restaurants that offer unique dining experiences and a diverse range of cuisines. These restaurants may have an additional cover charge, but they often provide a higher level of service and an extensive selection of premium alcoholic beverages for an enhanced dining experience.

3. Buffet and Casual Dining: Cruise ships also offer casual dining options such as buffets and casual eateries where you can indulge in a variety of international flavors. These venues typically include self-serve beverage stations where you can find a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to enjoy with your meal.

4. Room Service: If you prefer dining in the comfort of your stateroom, most cruise ships offer 24/7 room service that includes an array of food and beverage options, including alcoholic drinks. Whether you want a glass of wine or a cocktail to accompany your meal, room service allows you to enjoy the convenience of in-room dining without missing out on the included alcohol.

5. Bar and Lounge Inclusions: In addition to dining venues, cruise ships have various bars and lounges throughout the ship where you can relax and enjoy a drink outside of meal times. Many of these bars and lounges are included in the alcohol package, allowing you to try different drinks and enjoy the ship’s ambiance.

It’s important to note that while alcoholic beverages are often included during meal times, certain premium wines, spirits, and specialty cocktails may have an additional cost. These premium options cater to those looking for a more exclusive or unique drinking experience, and the additional charge reflects the higher quality or rarity of these beverages.

Now that we’ve explored the dining options and alcohol inclusion during meal times, let’s discuss any exclusions and restrictions you may need to be aware of while enjoying alcohol on a cruise.

Exclusions and Restrictions

While alcohol-inclusive cruise packages offer a fantastic opportunity to indulge in a variety of beverages, it’s important to be aware of any exclusions and restrictions that may apply. Here are some common exclusions and restrictions you may encounter:

1. Premium Brands: While many cruise lines include a wide selection of alcoholic drinks in their packages, there may be certain premium brands or top-shelf spirits that are not included. These beverages may incur an additional charge if you choose to indulge in them.

2. Specialty Cocktails and Mixes: Some cruise lines may have restrictions on certain specialty cocktails or mixology creations that require specific ingredients or techniques. These beverages may have an additional cost or may not be included in the beverage package.

3. Mini-Bar and In-Room Beverages: While most beverages served in the main dining venues and bars are included, the mini-bar in your stateroom may have separate pricing. Be sure to check the details of your package to understand which beverages are included in your stateroom and which ones may require an additional charge.

4. Age Restrictions: Cruise lines have strict age policies regarding the consumption of alcohol. The minimum drinking age onboard can vary depending on the cruise line and the itinerary. Generally, the minimum age to consume alcohol is 21 years old for US departures and 18 years old or older for international departures, but it’s important to check the specific policies of the cruise line before your trip.

5. Responsible Drinking Policies: Cruise lines prioritize the safety and well-being of their guests. They may have policies in place to ensure responsible drinking, such as limits on the number of alcoholic beverages served per person per day or mandatory alcohol awareness programs. These policies are in place to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all passengers.

It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the specific exclusions and restrictions of the cruise line and package you choose to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience. Review the terms and conditions of the alcohol package, consult with the cruise line or your travel advisor if needed, and always drink responsibly.

Now that we’re aware of the exclusions and restrictions, let’s move on to some tips for enjoying alcohol on a cruise.

Tips for Enjoying Alcohol on a Cruise

While enjoying alcohol on a cruise can be a delightful part of your vacation experience, it’s essential to do so responsibly. Here are some tips to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time:

1. Set a Budget: Before your cruise, determine how much you are comfortable spending on alcohol. This can help you make informed choices and avoid any surprises when you receive your final bill. Stick to your budget to ensure you don’t overspend.

2. Know Your Limits: It’s important to understand your own tolerance for alcohol. Pace yourself and drink in moderation to avoid overindulging. Remember to stay hydrated by alternating alcoholic drinks with water or other non-alcoholic options.

3. Take Advantage of Beverage Packages: If your cruise offers a beverage package that includes alcohol, take full advantage of it. Explore different beverages and try new cocktails or wines that you may not have considered otherwise. It’s an opportunity to sample a variety of drinks without worrying about cost.

4. Try the Local Specialties: If your cruise takes you to different destinations, take the opportunity to try local beverages or regional specialties. Whether it’s a unique cocktail, wine, or beer, immersing yourself in the local drink culture can enhance your overall experience.

5. Attend Tastings and Events: Many cruises offer tasting events or educational sessions about different types of alcohol. These can be informative and fun experiences where you can expand your knowledge and appreciation for various beverages.

6. Respect the Drinking Age and Policies: It’s crucial to adhere to the drinking age policies of the cruise line. If you’re traveling with underage family members or friends, be mindful and responsible when consuming alcohol around them.

7. Tip the Bartenders and Staff: If you receive exceptional service or enjoy the skills of a talented bartender, consider tipping them as a gesture of appreciation. It’s a way to show gratitude for their efforts and can enhance your overall experience.

8. Designate a Sober Buddy: If you’re traveling with a group, consider designating a sober buddy who can help keep an eye on everyone’s alcohol consumption and ensure everyone stays safe.

9. Follow Safety Guidelines: Remember to follow all safety guidelines provided by the cruise line, including avoiding excessive alcohol consumption before participating in any physical activities or excursions.

10. Enjoy and Relax: Most importantly, remember that a cruise is a time to relax, unwind, and enjoy yourself. Savor your favorite drinks, discover new flavors, and make lasting memories while responsibly enjoying alcohol on your cruise.

By following these tips, you can have a memorable and enjoyable experience while indulging in the alcohol offerings on your cruise.

Now it’s time to wrap up our comprehensive guide to alcohol inclusion on cruises.

Embarking on an alcohol-inclusive cruise allows you to fully immerse yourself in a world of relaxation, exploration, and indulgence. From all-inclusive packages to a wide range of beverage choices, cruise lines offer various options to cater to every taste and preference.

Whether you’re sipping on a refreshing cocktail by the pool, enjoying a glass of wine with a gourmet meal, or sampling local specialties at different destinations, the world of alcohol on a cruise is diverse and exciting.

It’s important to research and choose a cruise line that aligns with your preferences and budget. Familiarize yourself with the specific inclusions, exclusions, and restrictions of the alcohol packages offered to make the most of your experience.

8 best drinks to order with a cruise ship beverage package (and 3 to avoid)

Erica Silverstein

Editor's Note

If you're going to spend $60 to $140 per day for a cruise ship drink package , you will want to make sure you're getting the best value. Order the right drinks and you can definitely get your money's worth. Choose the wrong drinks, and you'll end up spending more money than necessary.

The most cost-effective option is to get a cruise line drink package free as a booking perk . If you can't do that, focus on these eight best drinks to order with a beverage package to get the most out of your alcohol budget. I'll also clue you into three drink types that will work against your plan to make that package worth the money.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Expensive cocktails

If you prepay a flat price for alcohol, you can order pricey specialty cocktails without worrying about paying $15 to $20 a pop. Hands down, the best drink you can order from a value standpoint is the most expensive cocktail that falls within your plan's limit.

For example, Carnival Cruise Line includes beverages that cost $20 or less in its Cheers Beverage Program. The limit is $15 with Norwegian Cruise Line 's Unlimited Open Bar Beverage Package and $14 with Royal Caribbean 's Deluxe Beverage Package. Prioritize drinks that cost close to the limit. If you go over, most onboard bars will charge the difference, so you might want to try that expensive cocktail for just a few bucks.

Name-brand liquor

Order a gin and tonic, and the bartender is likely to pour you the cheapest house brand of gin he's got on hand. Get the most from your beverage package by asking for your tonic with Tanqueray or Bombay Sapphire.

The same rule of thumb applies to any liquor. Ask for your booze by name to get the nicer, more expensive drink and the best value from your beverage package. Just make sure the brand you're requesting is included in your package — otherwise you'll be charged extra. (Note that if your cruise line offers multiple tiers of drink packages, the top-shelf liquors might only be included in the priciest option.)

Weirdest drink on the menu

cruise lines include alcoholic beverages

I like to try new drinks, but at $10 to $15 a cocktail, it can be an expensive experiment. With a drink package, however, experimentation is a risk-free proposition — especially on lines that have no limit on the number of alcoholic drinks you can purchase in a 24-hour period.

Try that fruit-infused vodka, the crazy-colored shot or the spiked cappuccino. There's no extra cost if you don't like it, and you only have to wait a few minutes before you can order a replacement.

The drink doesn't have to be eye-raising to be experimental. Use your beverage package to sample new wines by the glass or a cocktail you've never tried. You might discover your new favorite drink.

Specialty coffee

Cruisers have trouble leaving their Starbucks addiction behind them and flock to the extra-charge coffee cafes onboard. With a beverage package, you can indulge your caffeine addiction with the good stuff at no extra charge.

Make your morning latte a vacation habit, or grab a chai tea on a rainy sea day or an iced coffee on a hot one. Nonalcoholic drinks do not count toward any drink limits, so the more you sip, the more value you get from your drink package.

Bottled water

Many cruisers don't like the taste of the ship's tap water. If you fall into that category, bottled water is another great beverage package buy, even if it's not the most earth-friendly option.

Grab a sealed bottle from the poolside bar to bring back to your deck chair so you can stay hydrated while you sunbathe. Collect bottles from the onboard bars to stash in your cabin so you can drink them after a shipboard pub crawl or throw them in your day pack when you head off the ship.

Prefer sparkling water with dinner? You can order it with no second thoughts when you have a beverage package.

Embarkation day drinks

cruise lines include alcoholic beverages

Do you feel a little awkward making a beeline for the bar as soon as you step inside a cruise ship on embarkation day? You definitely should not feel this way if you've purchased a beverage package. The packages are priced by the length of your cruise, and embarkation day counts.

Grab a celebratory bubbly to mark the start of your cruise. Start your vacation with a glass of wine to unwind. It's five o'clock somewhere, and skipping out on embarkation day drinks means you're paying for a full day of beverage service you are not using. You might as well change that up and get more bang for your buck.

Frozen drinks on private islands

Like I said earlier, cruise lines price their beverage packages by the day, and you can't prorate the pricing to skip port days when you're hardly on the ship. Most of us can't party all night after touring in the sun all day, which makes it hard to break even on the package cost on port days.

The bars on certain cruise line private islands — Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay , Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay and MSC Cruises' Ocean Cay — let you use your drink package ashore. (Half Moon Cay and Harvest Caye do not.) That pina colada set against a palm tree backdrop will jazz up your social media feed and is a great choice for making your beverage package worthwhile.

Other nonalcoholic beverages

Some lines, such as Carnival and Princess Cruises , limit passengers to 15 alcoholic drinks per day, which can make it harder to break even on the package costs. Make the plan cost-effective (and drink responsibly) by interspersing your bar drinks with nonalcoholic options, such as soda, energy drinks, freshly squeezed juices and other bottled beverages like Gatorade or Honest Tea.

Even better, if you can purchase resealable or unopened bottles or cans, you can save them to take off the ship in port. That strategy will help you get full value from your drink package on days you're mainly off the ship.

3 drinks to avoid

cruise lines include alcoholic beverages

You don't really need to avoid any drinks when you have a beverage package, but some choices aren't as useful as others for making the package cost-effective. If you can, go easy on the following drinks — or reconsider whether that beverage package is the right choice for you in the first place.

Beer is usually the cheapest alcoholic drink on board, and it can be filling. If you only drink beer, you might find it more difficult to reach the break-even point for your drink package. (Others will have no trouble downing eight or more beers a day.) Whether you crave craft brews or stick to Bud Light, ask if your cruise line has a cheaper beer-and-wine-only package (such as Windstar Cruises ' Topmast Discoveries Beer & Wine Package) that might make more sense for you.

Well drinks

If your drinks are already paid for, you have no incentive to order cheap well drinks when you can get name-brand liquor for the same price. If you don't specify which vodka or rum you want, the bartender will give you the most basic option. Call out your booze by name, and if you're not sure, ask the bartender which bottles are included in your package. This tip is especially true if you've paid extra for the priciest, most inclusive drink package your cruise line offers.

Bottles of wine

It's true that you will get a 20% to 40% discount on bottles of wine with most cruise line drink packages. But you're still paying extra for alcohol when you have already paid for wine by the glass, beer and cocktails. Filling up on extra-fee wine might prevent you from ordering as many additional drinks as you normally would, keeping you from breaking even on your package price. Stick to wine by the glass, and you can get all your vino without plunking down more cash.

Sure, you can't get all the same vintages by the glass as you can order by the bottle, and you might want a nice wine to celebrate a special occasion. If you intend to order several bottles of wine during your cruise, you might be better off with a wine-only package instead of a broader alcoholic beverage package.

Bottom line

Most people who purchase a cruise drink package will order a variety of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages each day. However, if you're set on getting the most value from your package purchase, you'll want to be smart about which drinks you order. If you're not at least breaking even with your wine, beer, soda, coffee and cocktail orders, you might want to rethink whether you've chosen the right beverage package for your drinking style.

The Importance of Size in Cruise Ships

When it comes to cruise ships, size truly matters. The average ship weighs over 100,000 tons, and the importance of size in cruise ships cannot be overstated. It directly impacts the overall passenger experience. Here are four reasons why size is crucial:

More onboard amenities: Larger cruise ships have the space to incorporate a wide range of amenities. They can have multiple restaurants, pools, theaters, and even water parks. This allows passengers to have a variety of entertainment options to choose from.

Increased passenger capacity: Bigger ships can accommodate more passengers. This means more opportunities for socializing and making new friends onboard. With a larger passenger capacity, there is also a greater chance of finding like-minded individuals to share the cruising experience with.

Enhanced stability: Size plays a role in the stability of a cruise ship. Larger ships tend to have better stability in rough seas. This results in a smoother and more comfortable sailing experience for passengers.

Greater choice in staterooms: With more space available, larger cruise ships offer a wider variety of stateroom options. Passengers can choose from interior cabins, ocean view rooms, balconies, and luxurious suites. This allows them to find the perfect accommodation to suit their preferences and budget.

Size is just one aspect of the evolution of celebrity cruise ships.

Everything to Know About Alcohol & Drinks on a Cruise (Costs, Rules, & More)

For many people, it’s not a cruise unless they are enjoying themselves with a drink in their hand. After all, what’s more relaxing than hanging out poolside with a cold beer or tasty cocktail?

Mojito on a cruise

Of course, cruise lines are happy to help. Bars are everywhere on a cruise ship, and the alcohol flows freely. But it’s certainly not free. Drinks are big business on a cruise.

So how much will you pay for a drink? What sort of beverages are available? Who can buy a beer or cocktail? These are just a few questions you might have about enjoying alcohol on a cruise. We answer them all (plus roughly a dozen more) for you below.

In This Article...

How much does beer cost on a cruise?

Looking for a brew? Cruise ships will have tons of options, including some like Carnival that even brew their own beer to sell. But if it’s a large, nationally known beer, it’s likely to be on the ship… along with some other options like local beers. Norwegian Cruise Line even has some ships with dozens of beers on tap.

In general, expect prices to be in the $7-9 range, before gratuity. With gratuity, expect to spend about $8-10.50 per beer.

As an example, below is a list of prices and beers from a recent Royal Caribbean cruise. Keep in mind these prices are before gratuity is added on.

  • Amstel Light $7.49
  • Blue Moon $7.49
  • Bud Light $7.49
  • Budweiser $7.49
  • Coors Light $7.49
  • Corona $7.49
  • Dos Equis $7.49
  • Daura Damm $7.49
  • Heineken $7.49
  • Michelob Ultra $7.49
  • Miller Light $7.49
  • Paulaner Weiss $7.49
  • Stella Artois $7.49
  • Red Stripe (473 ml) $7.99
  • Foster’s Oil Can (750 ml) $9.50

Other cruise lines might have prices that are slightly higher or lower but this is a good ballpark. As well, options will vary by cruise line and even from bar to bar on some ships.

How much do cocktails cost on the ship?

Hurricane fish bowl

Perhaps nothing is as iconic on a cruise ship as sipping a delicious cocktail with an umbrella in it. And cruise lines are happy to oblige. Not only can you get classics like Rum Runners, Margaritas, and Mai Tais, but cruise lines are constantly introducing unique cocktails that you won’t find anywhere else.

In other words, even if you aren’t a big cocktail drinker, there’s likely to be something that you’ll want to sip.

The downside? You definitely have to pay for it. Prices for cocktails on cruise ships usually run about $10-14 per drink, before gratuity . So expect to spend about $12 to $16.50 per beverage when gratuity is added.

Here is a sample menu from a recent Carnival cruise to give you an idea of what’s offered. Just like different restaurants, different bars on the ship will have different drink options:

What should I know about drink packages?

As you can see, the price of alcohol on the ship can be expensive. If you’re looking to save money, the cruise line offer drink packages. These packages offer up all you want for one price. So, for example, a cruise line like Carnival will charge about $55 per day for a package, and for that amount you can simply grab a drink when you’re ready.

Drink packages can be a considerable cost, but make the budgeting much easier.

Before you buy a package, however, there are lots of things to know. For example, if one adult in the cabin buys the package, then all adults normally have to purchase it as well. And if you purchase, you have to buy the package for every day of the cruise.

For a full breakdown, read our guide to cruise line drink packages here .

Is gratuity included on drinks?

Royal Caribbean Bionic Bar

If you have a drink package, then you don’t have to worry about gratuity being added when you get something from a bar. The gratuity is instead added onto the daily cost of the package. So a $70 per day drink package will have an 18-20% gratuity charge (the amount varies by cruise line) and actually costs you closer to $85 per day. But when you get a drink, you won’t see any additional charges, for the drink or gratuity.

However, if purchasing a drink without the package, then you will be charged an additional gratuity on the menu price . As just mentioned, this amount varies by cruise line but is normally 18-20%.

So a $10 drink on the menu will actually end up being about $12. An $8 beer would be closer to $10.

One thing to know is that while this gratuity is charged automatically, when you sign the receipt you’ll see a line for an additional tip. You aren’t required or expected to add more unless you want to do so.

What’s the drinking age on a cruise ship?

With cruise ships there are some unique situations that you don’t find with other vacations. For instance, while docked in a country, the ship is bound to the laws of that nation. But when outside their waters, they are not. And then, a ship might visit three or four different countries with different laws during the same cruise.

To keep things simple, ships sailing from the United States have a drinking age of 21 years old . Ships sailing from points in Europe, Asia, and Australia typically have a drinking age of 18 years old.

But local laws in places your ship will visit might have different drinking ages. In some cases, it may be legal for someone to drink in port, but not allowed on the cruise ship. For instance, Mexico and The Bahamas have an 18 year drinking age, but ships departing the United States have a 21 year age minimum.

For more on cruises and drinking ages, you can see our article here .

How do I buy drinks on the ship?

cruise lines include alcoholic beverages

Put that wallet away. To buy drinks on the ship you don’t need cash or a credit card. In most cases you simply hand over your room keycard, which acts as a charge card for your onboard account. (Sometimes you simply give your room number and the staff charges your account that way.)

Once charged, you’ll be presented a receipt to sign for your drink.

Have a drink package? Don’t worry, the bar staff will know when your card is swiped that you have the package. You won’t be charged for the beverage.

Is there a limit to how much I can drink?

There are no set limits on how much you can drink. One exception is that Carnival does limit those with drink packages to 15 alcoholic beverages per day. (It’s not clear if that limit applies to those without the package.)

Still, for the most part you aren’t under any clearly defined limit. That said, don’t expect to continue to be served if you are showing signs of dangerous levels of intoxication. The cruise lines want you to relax, enjoy yourself, and have a good time, but not at the expense of your health or the well-being of other passengers.

What brands of alcohol are available?

There is seemingly an endless number of options when it comes to alcohol brands on a cruise ship. In fact, there are bound to be brands you’ve never tasted or even heard of before, in addition to well-known names.

So will your favorite brand of beer, wine, or liquor be served? That depends.

If your favorite is a popular brand with national presence, then you can expect it to be on the ship. If it’s a lesser-known or regional brand, then the chances are much lower.

For instance, if you’re from Texas then Shiner Bock is a well-known beer brand and served just about anywhere in the state… but not nationally. We have yet to see the brand on a cruise ship unless sailing from Texas.

Major brands of alcohol like Tito’s, Jack Daniel’s, Crown Royal, Maker’s Mark are all widely available. In addition, you will definitely find some lesser-known options as well, but not all.

What time do the bars open and close?

“Cruise time” is a little different from regular time. So if you’re wanting a drink in the morning, that’s no issue. Individual bar schedules will vary, but apart from very late night/early morning (e.g. 3-8 a.m.) you should be able to find somewhere serving, though it may only be one or two spots.

For instance, below is the bar schedule for MSC during a recent cruise:

cruise lines include alcoholic beverages

Can I take my drink anywhere around the ship?

Yes. At first it can seem a little weird walking from a restaurant to the casino to the pool all while carrying a drink in your hand. For those of us used to laws surrounding public display of open containers, it feels unnatural. On a cruise ship, it’s completely ok and commonplace.

Drinks can be taken with you anywhere around the ship. So grab a drink and head to a show, dinner, the pool, casino, or just back to the cabin.

Can I order two drinks/doubles?

Sure, although some lines have rules if you have the drink package. If you don’t have the package, then it’s not a big deal to order multiple drinks at once. In fact, cruise lines often have beer buckets that you can purchase that have 4-6 beers.

Want a drink for you and a friend? Want a double? Just order it, it’s no issue at all.

If you have the drink package, however, then things get a little more complicated. Since these packages are for individuals and not meant to be shared, there are rules that limit the ability to order multiple drinks. For example, Carnival’s package doesn’t allow double shots and you can only purchase one drink at a time, with a five-minute waiting period between drinks.

Is There a Mini-Bar in the Cabin?

Often, but not always. Every cabin will have a small refrigerator, which often doubles as a mini-bar with a number of beers, liquors, sodas, and waters. (We have been on cruises where the refrigerator is empty.)

Want something to drink? Help yourself, but just know you’ll be charged. The menu prices are typically posted on the fridge or nearby. Even if you have a drink package, mini-bar items are excluded.

Can I bring alcohol onboard?

You can’t bring most alcohol onto the ship for drinking during your cruise. So if you wanted to bring a bottle of rum or a 12-pack of beer from home to enjoy while sailing, that’s not allowed. Cruise lines expect you to purchase their bar offerings. They do, however allow you to bring on a bottle of wine or champagne.

If you are in port and find a bottle of something that you want, then you can also buy it and bring it home with you. So if you visit Mexico and pick up a bottle of tequila, you can bring it back with you as you board the ship.

The difference? When you return to the ship the bottle will be taken from you and placed in storage. It will then be returned to you the last night of the cruise to take home. So don’t think you’re going to be able to enjoy it while sailing.

One other thing to note is that some lines — including Carnival and Royal Caribbean — do allow you to bring on some non-alcoholic beverages like sodas and waters. You can find more details here .

Can I buy duty-free alcohol on the ship to mix drinks?

Duty free bottles

Step on a cruise ship (or head out into port), and you’ll see lots of opportunity for duty-free shopping. Cigarettes and alcohol are the big sellers, and the prices are good for what’s offered.

You might have the idea to bring on mixers and then buy a bottle from the duty-free shop to enjoy on your cruise. Unfortunately, that’s not allowed.

When buying from a duty-free shop, your bottles will be packaged and then stored by the staff until the last day of your cruise. They will then be delivered to your cabin on the last night to take with you as you get off the ship.

What happens if I sneak alcohol onto a cruise?

Given the price of drinks on the ship, you wouldn’t be alone in wondering about sneaking drinks on with you in your luggage as you board.

It’s relatively common that people try this trick. In fact, when boarding you’ll likely find several people having bottles of liquid being closely examined by the security staff during boarding.

In other words, security is on the lookout for smuggled booze. If found, expect it to be removed and likely destroyed. If put it in your checked luggage, you might be called down to retrieve your bag.

The terms and conditions of sailing may give the cruise line the right to not allow you to board if found trying to sneak on alcohol, however, we’ve personally never heard of that happening.

Still, it could lead to some awkward conversations — and losing your alcohol — should you be caught trying to sneak it onto the ship.

How can I save money on drinks?

There’s no question that it can be expensive to drink on a cruise ship. But there are ways that you can drink for less money. Here are a few tips:

Drink in port instead: Ports of call offer a chance to save money on drinks. Many areas near where the ship docks will have cheap(er) drink specials designed to attract the business of cruise passengers. By heading off the ship you can save money versus drinking on the ship.

Look for sales: If you do plan to drink on the ship, be sure to keep an eye out for drink specials. They will often be mentioned in the daily planner that’s delivered to your room each night. Maybe it’s a happy hour at a certain bar or certain drinks that have a discount.

Do the math on drink packages: If you’re a big drinker, then drink packages can save you tons. These packages are also expensive, so if you don’t get your money’s worth, then you could end up spending more than you would otherwise. To help you do the math before buying, check out our drink package calculator here .

I tried Holland America's 'Have It All' package. For just $55 a day, my cruise felt way more luxurious.

  • I tried Holland America Line 's Have It All package on a recent cruise to Alaska.
  • For $55 per person per day, we got complimentary drinks, special meals, and other perks.
  • The price was so worth it we already booked this package for future cruises.

Insider Today

Cruise bookings are predicted to reach record levels this year, and travelers are especially interested in luxurious sailings.

But as many of us know, luxury doesn't always equate to value, even when it comes to upgrades and special packages.

So, on our recent cruise to Alaska, my husband and I put one of many cruise packages to the test: Holland America Line's "Have It All" package, which costs $55 per person per day.

It includes perks like a beverage package, ship credit for shore excursions, onboard WiFi, and dinner at specialty restaurants.

Here's why we found it to be such a great value we're going to add it to future cruises.

The beverage package was great, and it included special drinks without alcohol

The biggest perk of the "Have It All" package was the ability to order drinks without worrying about the bill at the end of the cruise.

Our previous cruises had us drinking only tap water, drip coffee, tea, and an occasional glass of wine with dinner to avoid any sticker shock at the end of the trip. We felt restricted in enjoying our vacation.

Related stories

But this time, we had the freedom to enjoy ourselves. The "Have It All" package we booked came with 15 drinks a day under $11. If you want a drink over $11, you only pay the difference.

The beverage package also covers non-alcoholic drinks. It was perfect for when we wanted espresso drinks for cold Alaska days or a bottle of water for a shore excursion.

The shore-excursion credit helped push us to have more fun

We knew we had to do a whale-watching excursion in Alaska, but didn't consider booking other excursions due to price. Many of the ones we were interested in cost over $100 per person.

But with the package, we each got credits to use toward shore excursions during our cruise. The value of the credit varies depending on the duration of your cruise — ours was less than 10 days, so we each got a $100 credit.

The $200 worth of credits made us feel more comfortable booking an incredible excursion to kayak the wild waters of Sitka.

We probably would've hesitated to book an excursion and missed an incredible experience if we hadn't felt compelled to use the credits in the package.

Specialty dining helped us celebrate our anniversary

Our "Have it All" packages each included at least one dinner at one of the ship's specialty restaurants. If you're on a longer cruise, this package would get you access to more dinners.

We used our credits to eat at the Pinnacle Grill, known for its premium steaks and intimate dining experience. Our anniversary dinner was extra special because of the access to premium dishes unavailable in the main dining room, five-star service, and a luxurious setting.

WiFi kept us connected

The package included WiFi, which really came in handy as we shared photos with friends and family throughout our trip.

We were able to use the internet to search for whatever we needed and research the highlights to visit at the next port of call.

We've already booked the package for future cruises

For less than what a few drinks cost per day, the package helped us relax, have fun, and enjoy each port of call with a shore excursion. Plus, we got to indulge in the ship's specialty restaurants.

We loved it so much we've already purchased this same package for three future cruises.

Common Questions About Ncl Drink Packages

If youve never cruised with Norwegian before, or its been a while since your last cruise, you probably have some general questions about how the drink packages work. Ill answer the most common ones here. If you have a question that I havent answered, just leave it in the comments and Ill answer it.

How To Snag A Free Drinks Package

TMSM Explains: The Requirements To Purchase Alcoholic ...

Most big-ship lines offer one or more drinks packages for an extra charge but you might be able to get one of the packages for free. Some big-ship lines will throw in drinks packages for no extra cost as a perk during limited-time booking promotions.

The line perhaps best known for throwing in free drinks packages as a booking perk is Norwegian. Norwegian seemingly always is running some variation of its Free at Sea promotion that brings a choice of a free drinks package, free specialty dining, free excursions and other perks. Depending on the cabin category you book, you can get one or more of the freebies thrown in.

Other lines that sometimes run promotions with free drinks packages include Princess Cruises , Celebrity Cruises and Holland America.

Can I Bring Soda Bottled Water Or Other Nonalcoholic Drinks Onboard

It depends on the cruise line. Norwegian and MSC prohibit all drinks in checked and carry-on luggage. In other cases, you can bring “reasonable quantities” of soda, juice, bottled water, iced tea or other sealed soft drinks onboard at embarkation. Check with your line to find out what amounts they deem reasonable. The range stretches from a 12-pack per person to cases.

Additional restrictions may also apply. Carnival, for example prohibits any drinks packaged in bottles, including water and sodas. All cruise lines allow or provide water that is to be used in a medical device or with infant formula. Also, if your line allows drinks to be brought on, double check whether you must carry it on yourself or if you’re able to check it in with luggage handlers.

All cruise lines prohibit passengers from bringing their own small coffeemakers onboard. If you must have your own coffee, consider packing a small French press and your own ground coffee and requesting hot water from room service or your cabin attendant.

Overview Of The Change In Packages Offered

Prior to the change, MSC offered three different alcoholic packages:

Easy Package : The least expensive option, which covered drinks up to $6 per glass, was known as the Easy Package. With this offer, you essentially received your option of a couple of beers, a selection of well drinks, house wines, coffees, and soda.

Premium Package : More comparable to the drink packages found on other cruise lines, the Premium Package offered drinks up to $12 per glass. That opened up your options to most of what was available on the ship, including a large lineup of beer, cocktails, and wine.

Premium Plus : While most drinks were available under the Premium Package, for those who simply wanted anything on the ship, they could upgrade to Premium Plus. With this offer there was no price limit, so if it was available, it was included in the package.

With the new rework of the packages, however, MSC is offering a different lineup of packages:

Easy Package : Just as before, the Easy Package is still there. You can still have this package and get an assortment of well drinks, house wines, coffees, and sodas. As before, there is a limited beer selection.

Drink package rules to know

There is no sharing of drink packages. As well, all passengers in a cabin or travel party, must purchase a package.

Are Cruise Drink Packages Worth It

Whether or not a drink package is worth it depends on how much — and how often — you drink. We would guess that for most people, the cost don’t justify purchasing an all you can drink package.

You can use our drink package calculator to see if it’s worth it for you.

Consider that a beer on the ship costs between $6-8, including gratuity. For a drink package running $60 per day, you’d have to drink about 8-10 beers each and every day — including on days when you are in port — to get your money’s worth.

If you like more expensive drinks like cocktails, the math works a little more in your favor. A $10-14 cocktail means you’d have to drink about 5-7 drinks every day to make it worth your while.

Many people might be able to keep this sort of pace up for a couple of days, but it can be tough to do that for every day of your cruise. Also keep in mind if you have to spend more to purchase the drink package for everyone in the cabin, even if they don’t want it.

There is one benefit to consider, even if you don’t come out ahead financially. Some passengers love knowing exactly what they will spend with the package and not having to worry about every nickel and dime they spend on drinks.

With the drink package you aren’t going to be surprised by a high bill at the end of your cruise. You’ll know exactly what you’re spending right upfront.

Have you purchased a drink package before? Was it worth it? Let us know in the comments below.

Drinks In Disney Cruise Rotational Dining Restaurants

When you dine in one of the main restaurants such as Animators Palate or Tianas Place you will have a large selection of drinks to choose from some free and some for an extra charge.

The same also applies to Remy and Palo which are the adult only restaurants.

All of the soda types which are available on the pool deck for free are also not charged for in the restaurants. So for instance, if you want an iced tea or glass of Sprite this is complimentary.

If you want a soda that is not on that list, for example, a Root Beer, there will be a charge for this.

Your Server will very quickly learn your free drink preferences and these will usually be waiting for you when you arrive at your table.

Many people choose to drink wine at dinner. You can bring your own bottle , or order from your Wine Package. There is also a Wine List available with bottles or wines available by the glass.

You can order any cocktail you want, but there will also be a special selection on your menu each day with drinks chosen to compliment the food and theme of the restaurant.

There are always two which are alcoholic with another non-alcoholic choice.

There are also specialty coffees and liquors which are an extra charge.

Skip The Package If You Can Be Satisfied With The Byob Allowance

You may have the option to bring onboard your own limited quantity of non-alcoholic and/or alcoholic beverages. This depends on which cruise line you sail. This could include limited amounts of sodas, beers, and bottles of wines. The types and amounts vary by cruise line, and some cruise lines will charge you a corkage fee for opening your wine at a restaurant. You should check with your specific cruise line for the most updated limits, but by way of example:

Sample Allowances

These BYOB allowances for alcohol typically only apply at embarkation. The crew will confiscate any alcohol purchased while you are in port after sailing. They will store it until the end of your cruise.

Ordering Bottle Service In Your Stateroom Is A Good Deal

The previous cruise alcohol tip is great for a cheap bottle on the last cruise night. But what about the rest of the cruise?

Most cruise lines offer standard 750-ml bottles of liquor that theyll send to your room for a modest price. Theyll set it all up nicely with glasses and ice for you to use throughout your cruise. Sometimes, theyll even throw in some free mixers too! The price of these liquor bottles with set-up ranges around $40-$60 , depending on the cruise line and your liquor preference.

While $50 for a bottle of liquor is much more than youd pay for it at your local liquor store, the cost still comes out to being much less expensive than you would pay for several drinks at the bar on a cruise.

Lets do the math on bottle service using a real-life example :

On a recent cruise aboard the Holland America Koningsdam, the cruise offered a Gin & Tonic package that includes a bottle of Bombay gin and three cans of tonic water for $46.25 + 15% service charge for a grand total of $53.19.

That $53 will yield at least 16 delicious gin & tonics that can be made and enjoyed right from the comfort of the stateroom throughout the entire cruise. This comes out to about $3.31 per drink.

Meanwhile at the Koningsdams bars, that same Bombay gin and tonic comes to $8.34, after the 15% service fee. So it would cost over $133 at the bar for 16 gin & tonics. So buying the bottle set-up for your stateroom ultimately results in a massive $80 savings! Heres the breakdown:

Does Everyone In The Cabin Have To Purchase The Beverage Package

Often yes, if one person in a cabin buys the package, all adults will need to as well. That said, the rules do vary depending on the cruise line you are sailing.

Carnival requires that each adult in a stateroom purchase a drink package if one person does. So if a husband purchases the package but the wife doesn’t drink, she must still purchase the drink package as well.

Royal Caribbean requires adult passengers in a cabin to all purchase the package if one person does.

Norwegian Cruise Lines requires each adult in the stateroom to purchase the same drink package.

Princess does not specifically say that all passengers in a cabin have to purchase the drink package. Other sources confirm that other adults don’t have to buy the drink package.

Celebrity Cruises spells out detailed terms of their drink package, including age restrictions, and that packages may not be shared. However, it does not state that all adults in the cabin have to purchase the package. A phone call to the cruise line confirmed that you do not have to purchase for everyone in the cabin.

MSC Cruises requires each adult to purchase the drink package if one person does. If you are traveling with a minor, then they will need to have the non-alcoholic drink package.

Bottom line: Except for a few cases, you should expect everyone has to buy it if one person does.

Does Virgin Voyage Drink Package include alcohol?

Find out if you need to pay for alcohol on Virgin Voyages. Plan your cruise with confidence and enjoy a worry-free vacation. Reserve your spot today!

Virgin Voyages is a joint venture cruising line that operates under two parent companies, namely, Virgin Group and Bain Capital. It is one of the newer cruise lines introduced in the past couple of years and so far, features three ships in its fleet, with one more on its way. What is unique about Virgin Voyages is that they want to establish a name for themselves in the industry by providing adult-only vacations to diverse locations such as the Caribbean, Europe, Mediterranean, etc.

The overall theme of this cruise line sounds exciting, and one of the major parts of the adults-only cruising experience is alcohol. Alcohol plays a big factor in making or breaking your cruising experience, and learning more about the alcohol policies on board any of the cruise ships that you decide to sail upon is crucial in pre-planning your experience and ensuring that there are no bumps during your travel. This article prepares you for your next Virgin Voyages trip in advance and helps you understand all about the alcohol policies aboard the cruise line and if you have to pay anything extra to get your hands on a drink or two.

All About Virgin Voyage's Alcohol Policies

Yes, in general, you have to pay for alcohol on the Virgin Voyages, while the circumstances of payment vary. Normally, cruise lines offer specific drink packages to the passengers, whereas Virgin Voyages has tried to be completely different and has gone off to another path.

Instead of drink packages, this cruise line offers something called the 'Bar Tab System.' It is simply a way to buy credit for your drinks in advance. You can pay $100, $200, and $300 for bar tabs in advance of your sailing trips. You can buy this credit scheme up until 24 hours before sailing starts officially. This bar tab credit system can be used for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. So it doesn't matter if you like to drink beers and wines or if your drink of choice is cold pressed juices and mocktails. There's something for everyone, and you can easily use this onboard credit system to purchase them. The only thing to note here is that this credit system is nonrefundable, so make sure to get the best of it while on your cruising trip at Virgin Voyages.

Recently, they've also introduced a plan where whenever you prepay for a bar tab for your trip, Virgin Voyages gives you onboard credit for every purchase that can be spent however you like throughout your trip. You usually get a total onboard credit of $50 every time you purchase the bar credit system for your cruising experience.

Basic drinks such as beers (Heineken, Amstel Light, Kalik, Corona) cost about $6-$7 per bottle. Cocktails such as Absolut, Buffalo Trace, Bacardi Superior, and Beefeater all cost $10 each. Lastly, wines by the glass are also available, with 40% of options being under $11. Another notable mention is that any tips required are already included in these base fares, so you need not worry about having to pay anything extra.

If you wish to bring your wine to the dining area, the servers there are willing to uncork it, serve it, and set it aside for you at an extra $25 corkage fee. Don't worry, though, since this fee can also be covered under the bar tab system. For non-alcoholic beverages, you can bring aboard anything that is not in a plastic or glass container. You can carry drinks like water, protein drinks, and canned/boxed soft drinks onboard, with a maximum limit for each person being set at twelve 12-ounce cans or paper cartons.

There are also no restrictions as to who you can buy the drink for, may it be your cabin mate or a friend you made onboard during your journey, there are no restrictions as such, and you can use your bar credit system to purchase however many drinks that come within the limit for anybody on board.

However, you can also save a little on paying for alcoholic drinks as Virgin voyages allow you to bring two bottles of wine, sparkling wine, or champagne aboard, with each bottle only measuring up to 750ml, that can be brought on embarkation with you carry-in items of luggage.

If you have more than the specified and allowed amount, security will collect it, but you can easily get it back on the last night of your trip. The same goes for any alcoholic drinks that might be purchased at any of the port stops on your cruising experience. You can submit those to the security officials onboard, and once your trip is coming to an end, your items will be safely returned to you.

The process to purchase the bar credit system is quite simple, and Virgin Voyages has made the whole experience hassle-free. All you have to do is sign in on the official website page on their home page and find the option to opt for the bar credit system. That's it, as the rest of the process is quite normal. You will be asked for basic details about how much you wish to pay, more details about your trip(s), and then lastly the option to pay the overall fees that you have chosen.
