Tanzania & Zanzibar Island: African Safari, School Construction & Education, Swim with Dolphins

During the summer of 2023 I got the opportunity to travel and volunteer in Zanzibar, Tanzania for two weeks with GIVE's Tanzania program. While I was there I got the chance to teach the locals computers. I loved getting to know my students and see their improvements throughout the time i was there. Along with teaching I helped with a few construction projects at the school, but our main project was a hall for the school. I have found it hard to describe how much this trip meant to me. This trip has allowed me to open my heart and grow so much as an individual.

Volunteer in Tanzania Tour

Volunteer in Tanzania

On September the 29th, my two closest friends and I made a trip of a lifetime. We joined the childcare program, volunteering in preschools in Arusha, Tanzania for 4 weeks. We made connections with people we'll most likely never meet again, but their impact will be remembered. We booked the trip with PMGY, with a strong will to help and experience as much as we could. We created a fundraiser months in advance so that we could donate to the schools - we ended up doing a lot more than we realised we could. The PMGY house itself is quite big, with 3 stories, and multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. I realise now that we arrived in one of the busiest times, ending up with very limited space. We were cramped in the top floor - a joined bedroom, 18 people to 1 bathroom. Getting breakfast and dinner seemed like a fight for survival; first come, first serve. Being late wasn't an option. There is a set menu, repeated each week, but you have the option of ordering delivery if you no longer want the provided options. There are constant power outings in Tanzania, but fortunately the house has a generator. When the generator is on, it basically shakes the entire house from how loud it is, but it keeps the power on. A downside, when generator is on - there is no hot water. So, timing your shower is crucial. The pressure varies depending if anyone else is using the water, and it is either boiling hot or freezing cold, and don't take too long because several other people are waiting to shower. When you arrive, you are added to the house group chat, where everyone in the house can communicate easily for various reasons, including the ordering of tuktuks from place to place. Sim cards are organised by the coordinators. These were provided to us on the second day of arriving, as there were other volunteers arriving, so you should let your family know you might not be able to contact them immediately. The sim card is a reasonable price, and can be topped easily. Please also keep in mind the free wifi advertised does not exist. Before placement, you will be given an orientation with the rest of the new group. On orientation, you will be shown the most trustworthy ATM, where you can take out money - my regular debit card worked completely fine. You will be taken to the Maasai markets, where you will be taught to bargain, as you will 100% purchase something incredibly overpriced if you are not careful. On the first day of placement, the PMGY coordinators organised the volunteers into separate groups to be sent to each school. We were allowed to change our schools with a good reason. We were also allowed to change to the medical program for a reasonable fee. We walked to our placements everyday, having breakfast at 8am, and setting off by 8:45am, finishing at around 12:30pm. The 4 weeks of placement flew by, we were incredibly sad to go, every child and every teacher we met were so beautiful and welcoming of us - but 4 weeks was the perfect amount of time for me. Weekends are free, so you have time to do lots of funs trips; eg. safari weekend, Maasai village, hot springs, waterfalls, Maasai markets etc. It gets a little tricky to find things to do after placement, and may get a little repetitive. Spending money is necessary to get the full experience, but chilling at the house can also be fun. It's very communal at the PMGY house, perfect for socialising, and getting to know people. Only breakfast and dinner are provided, so you need to eat out for lunch - a perfect time to explore with friends. I spent on average 150,000 shillings ($90 AUD or $60 USD) a week, not including weekend trips or shopping for souvenirs. We got around via tuktuks, small motor vehicles with 3 wheels (fit up to 4 people, 5 is pushing it), which are organised and ordered by the coordinators to ensure they are safe and best price. We went to Zanzibar at the end of the trip, which is a 1 hour flight from the Arusha airport. If you are planning to go, I would 100% recommend staying in Nungwi (up north) so you are near all the activities. If you are going during your program time, you are only allowed to miss 3 days of placement, but 3-5 days is plenty of time for Zanzibar. If you are asking my opinion, I wouldn't recommend Zanzibar. It was very overpriced, and I was very underwhelmed with my experience. Overall, my experience with PMGY was incredible. It has changed my views of travelling immensely. Volunteering allows you to have a much bigger insight to the culture and country you travel to. I would love to travel with PMGY again, and 100% recommend to anyone who is planning on travelling for volunteering.

We had an excellent 3-week trip to Tanzania with Kwesa Tours. The guide Joseph was excellent at helping and supervising everyone on the climbs (Mt. Meru & Mt Kilimanjaro) and the pace he set was ideal for everyone to make it to the top (pole-pole was very important). The safari part was remarkable (we visited Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater). Saw lots of action close up. I will always remember this trip and hope others are as fortunate as I was. Highly recommend Kwesa tours as a guide service.

Cultural tanzania tour reviews.

I left for Tanzania three days after graduating from high school. Entering the classroom for the first time, I felt timid and under qualified to be teaching a group of adults. Instead, I was greeted with the most authentic and joyful people I've ever met. Their pure enthusiasm to learn lifted me up in the constant smiles and laughter and I was eager to come to class each morning. We were there to teach them, but in the end I learned more from the people of Kairo than I could ever learn in a classroom. Most important to me was how GIVE engaged with the community and included locals in the work and highly valued their opinions. It was clear they wanted us there and valued our efforts in the community. We were lead mainly by locals and their knowledge of the area and the cultural values in Tanzania always made me feel comfortable and welcome. I cannot recommend this program enough for anyone who is wanting to find their purpose abroad!

What Our Customers Are Saying

Mission Africa Safaris

Cultural Tours in Tanzania

Cultural tours in Tanzania take you to discover the countries diverse heritage. There are 120 tribes in Tanzania and because of that, Tanzania’s culture is just as varied as the wildlife in the country. The fact that these tribes have learnt to live in harmony (at least when you compare with what is happening in some of the neighboring countries) is an achievement that is often understated. Each of the 120 tribes have their own traditional dances, music, rituals, social practices, art and traditional religious beliefs.

Cultural places to visit in Tanzania

Cultural tours in Tanzania offer amazing opportunities to meet some of Africa’s most interesting indigenous tribes and historical sites. The cultural tours are often an additional activity to standard game drives, other wildlife experiences and experiencing the beautiful beaches of the Indian ocean. A remarkable development was the partnership between the government of Tanzania and the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) to develop special villages where some of the local tribal groups can offer an authentic cultural experience. Visiting these villages provides tourists with opportunities to observe and experience how the local people live life in a rural setting. At the end of the day, the proceeds are used to develop the villages while also offering jobs to peasants. The village developments are in form of building schools, water holes, health centers and reforestation. We will now begin discussing the popular cultural attractions in Tanzania but before that, you might want to read about the major tourist attractions in Tanzania .

Cultural Attractions in Tanzania

Cultural safaris in Tanzania

The main activities while at the site include climbing the Balala Hill, visiting the local farms, going for a village walk and checking out the local development projects. For those who love art or wish to buy souvenir, this is one place you cannot afford to miss. By the end of your visit, you would have encountered the Chagga people, the Sandawe, the Rangi and the Mbugwe among others.

Cultural activities in Tanzania

On a typical visit to one of the homesteads in the rural areas, you can take part in tending the garden, taking the cows for water/pasture, fetching water in the swamps and cooking their traditional dishes. Ugali is the staple food of the Sukuma and can be consumed with vegetables or chicken/beef on special occasions. Fermented milk and locally made beer is also a popular drink among the Sukuma.

VISIT AND MEET TRIBES

Datoga and Hadzabe (at Lake Eyasi)

This visit will allow us to meet two tribes that have established an exchange relationship between them. The Datoga make metal pieces for arrows that the Hadzabe use to hunt small antelope and other animals for food, and these offer them some of the meat they get. They are a clear example of the interaction between wildlife and humans living in balance in the XXI century. With them you will learn to set fire and we can even accompany them on one of their hunts.

  • Datoga   is the original name of the Mangati that in Maasai means “fierce enemy”, and like them: they are polygamous.
  • They live in houses that they have built themselves with sand, cow dung, and tree branches.
  • They are characterized by being the tribe that works forging metal with fire to make necklaces and bracelets by hand.
  • They are hunters although they mainly carry out livestock work and cultivate the land, so they basically eat meat, corn paste, beans and milk. They also make alcohol in a traditional way from honey.
  • Only 5% speak the national language of Tanzania (Swahili), they communicate with each other through their own language and dialects.

Chagga (in Marangu)

At the foot of Kilimanjaro, we will visit a Chagga and Maasai Museum, where we will learn the history of the tunnels built by the Chagga tribe to hide and protect against Maasai attacks.  We will also visit a Chagga village and one of its traditional houses (circular huts built with branches of bushes and banana leaves) very different from the houses currently built with mud and wood. We will learn a lot about one of the largest tribes in Tanzania and their way of life.

This visit is part of a tour in which we will also visit the waterfalls in Marangu and enjoy a gastronomic experience with typical Tanzanian food and we can even roast coffee with our own hands!

The Chagga live at the foot of Kilimanjaro and although at the beginning they were nomads and were dedicated to livestock, currently they live in villages where they mainly grow: bananas, coffee, corn, potatoes and beans. They also make alcoholic beverages from corn, banana and honey.

They live in clan-based societies, their language is Bantu, and they follow their own traditions.

cultural tours tanzania

Maasai (in Manyara and Ngorongoro)

We will visit the “boma” (house), we will know how the wild fauna and people coexist in the same territory, we will witness rituals of worship of deities and we will dance with them the traditional welcome dances.

The Maasai follow their traditional nomadic way of life and subsist on herding. They depend on their livestock, from which they obtain milk to drink and excrement to line their houses. They sacrifice few specimens for meat consumption, thanks to the cattle they obtain milk that they ferment and eat with animal blood. They use the leather for footwear and ropes, the hides for clothing and blankets, the hooves and bones as ornaments, the horns as vessels.

Some sub-  tribes such  as the   Arusha (or Masai Lumbwa)   are also engaged in agriculture.

They live in circular settlements called “  manyattas”   (set of houses or “  bomas”  ) made of branches where they enclose livestock.

Most maintain their traditional monotheistic religion with mystical beliefs about the Maasai, God and their livestock. Cows are sacred just like the land.

They are organized in hierarchical clans and are divided into groups of warriors, heads of families and elders. Marriages are polygamous and women pay a dowry of cattle: cows or goats.

They wear brightly colored clothing, gaudy ornaments, large necklaces, and copper filaments on the ankles and arms.

Tanzanian tribes.

Tanzania is home to more than 120 tribes all with their own traditions. Take the chance of getting to know the local people better. When you visit them you will see that they are as interested in you as you are in them. They might ask you questions about where you come from and how you live. You will see that the that the meeting is equally interesting for both parties. All cultural activities we organize support the people you are visiting.

Maasai Tribe

This nomadic tribe stands out with its tall bodies and deep red clothing. They say the Maasai wear this color to scare away lions. They still maintain the same lifestyle as they did centuries ago. They travel with their cattle; cows, sheep, donkeys and goats. At places with enough water and grass they build their huts. Although the last few years the Maasai are being encouraged to stay at one place by the government so their children are able to go school. The Maasai have many remarkable traditions and rituals. If you want to discover more about this tribe let us know while making your inquiry. We will plan an interactive visit for you.

Hadzabe Bushmen

Living in the bush, speaking a language made out of clicks, hunting twice a day.. you might think that these people lived thousands of years ago, but actually they live at Lake Eyasi. From Karatu you drive about 2 hours on a very rough road to Lake Eyasi. Once you are there you can have a rest. The next morning you will get up early to help the Hadzabe with the preparation for their hunt. After the hunting you can try to shoot with the bow and arrow yourself. A local guide will help translating.

Datoga Tribe

This is the neighboring tribe of the Hadzabe and also known as the blacksmiths, because they will melt anything into arrows and jewellery. On a fire made out of charcoal they will show you how they for example melt a metal lock into a bracelet. They trade the arrows they make with other tribes for food. The Datoga themselves blend in with their environment, their dress being the color of the reddish brown soil. Only on closer inspection will they appear colorful with their reddish, patched leather dresses, bead work, and brass bracelets and necklaces.

Cultural tours in Tanzania are often added to Tanzania wildlife safaris, hiking tours , and other safari experiences, in addition to exploring the country’s stunning beaches and islands on the Indian Ocean.

In efforts to promote Tanzania’s cultural tourism, the government, in partnership with the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) established numerous villages where some of the most authentic tribes of Tanzania are found. Among these include the Maasai warriors – Africa’s most popular culture, the Chagga in Mto wa Mbu, and the Hadzade and Dotoga of Lake Eyasi, to mention but a few. Cultural Tours in Tanzania to these villages give visitors a chance to tap into the culture of these tribes and experience how they live. The cultural tours also include visits to the village’s local schools, hospitals, farmlands, and other community projects. While on Tanzania safaris, Cultural Tours in Tanzania are something you will enjoy.

Cultural Attractions in Tanzania

Maasai bomas village in ngorongoro.

Located on the western slopes of the Ngorongoro highlands, the Seneto Maasai Boma, home to the Maasai of northern Tanzania, is the most popular stop for cultural encounters. Renowned nomadic pastoralists, the Maasai are the most popular ethnic groups in Tanzania, as well as East Africa. Despite modernization, the Maasai are one of the tribes in Africa that have managed to keep their culture and traditions intact. The Maasai are often on the move from one to place another in search of water and pasture for their cattle and other livestock. However, the government has encouraged them to practice agriculture in their designated land in the Ngorongoro Conservation area

While with the Maasai Boma, visitors will be shown around their huts to explore how they live and interact with them and learn about their history and culture. Visitors will also have an exhibition on how their houses are constructed with cow dung, mud, and wood, how to milk cows and take care of goats and donkeys, etc. Tourists will also be able to engage in spear-throwing challenges, and traditional dances, and visit some of the Maasai handcrafted shops for souvenirs. The Tanzania cultural tour to the Maasai Bomas lasts about 45 minutes and will enrich with a true cultural experience of with Maasai people. Besides the Maasai Bomas, other popular Maasai communities in Ngorongoro include the Irkeepus village whose tour can also be combined with a trek to the Empakaai Crater.

One of the first cultural villages to be established, Mto wa Mbu lies at the base of the Great Rift Valley, near Lake Manyara National Park. This is the ideal place to go for a cultural tour while on a Tanzania safari in Lake Manyara National Park. Featuring the largest number of tribes in one area in Tanzania, Mto wa Mbu gained popularity around the 1950s after the introduction of irrigation systems. The Mto wa Mbu cultural tour is one enriched cultural safari that entails a village walk where tourists will visit the various villages and explore the different tribes that live here.

There are various village walks; from a climb to Balala Hill to a tour around the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro to see the Chagga people. Explore several local markets, and banana beer farms and interact with local farmers. Furthermore, visit the Sandawe who are renowned hunters and speak the same language as the Khoisan, the Rangi from Kondoa who specialize in basket and mat weaving, and the Mbugwe of Manyara, among other tribes. Tourists will be delighted to learn about numerous traditional practices such as iron smelting, constructing mud houses and huts, and preparing local cuisines, among many others.

Cultural Tours in Tanzania

The Hadzabe and Datoga of Lake Eyasi

These tribes, located near the shores of Lake Eyasi, are the most primitive in Tanzania. Lake Eyasi is a soda lake in Northern Tanzania, bordering Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the south. The lake lies on the foothills of the Eyasi escarpment on the western arm of the Great Rift Valley and is surrounded by the Kidero Mountains, hence offering spectacular scenery. The Hadzabe have been living here for thousands of years as hunter-gatherers and still uphold their traditions. The Datoga on the other hand, are a Nilotic-speaking tribe who are mostly known for their captivating style of dressing (bracelets and collars made out of beads and brass).

The Datoga also boast unique tattoos around their eyes which tourists find very fascinating. In the same region, there are other Maasai and Bantu tribes including the Chagga, Meru, and Nyamwezi. The Hadzabe and Datoga, like the Maasai, are cattle keepers. However, the Datoga are very aggressive and tend to collide with their neighbors; nonetheless, they will be glad to meet and interact with tourists on Tanzania cultural tours. While visiting the Hadzabe and Datoga, tourists will learn how to construct cattle fences, milk cows, wield hunting weapons, and prepare traditional food and herbs.

Stone Town – Zanzibar

Located on the tranquil waters of the Indian Ocean, Stone Town is one of the legendary islands of Zanzibar . The town is approximately 15 minutes flight from Dar-es-salaam and an hour from Arusha town; and among many things, is known for fruits, spices, fragrances, and flowers. Stone Town is the most visited island in Zanzibar, boasting ancient structures and the origin of Swahili culture. Over the centuries, Zanzibar was occupied by a variety of different people including Arabs, Portuguese, Sumerians, Indians, Egyptians, etc., greatly influenced the island’s culture.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site offers thrilling cultural and historical experiences, where tourists will learn about the birth of Swahili culture, and explore the elegant ancient architectural buildings including churches, mosques, museums, and the town’s narrow streets.

Kilwa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tanzania comprised of the historical islands of Kilwa Kisiwani & Songo Mnara or Kilwa Kivinje. The site is located on Tanzania’s southern coast about 6 hours’ drive from Dar es Salaam; scheduled flights by small aircraft connect Kilwa with Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, and several game parks. Kilwa was a major commercial center connecting Asia to the African interior across India, and it was the epicenter of the barter trade where ivory and gold were exchanged for products like beads, jewelry, cotton, and porcelain.

The site was first inhabited by traders from the Arabian Peninsula and the Persian Gulf as early as the ninth century, and these left cultural imprints which may still be seen in the remains of their exquisite architecture and the Swahili culture. Kilwa was once the most powerful city on the East African coast for from the 12th to the 15th centuries. The town had dominated commerce from Sofala in Mozambique to Mombasa in Kenya.

Olduvai Gorge

The Olduvai Gorge is an archeological location where Dr. Louis Leakey found the skull of the “Nutcracker Man,” also known as Zinjanthropus, in 1959. This particular fossil, like many others, dates back around 2 million years. Popularly known as the Cradle of Mankind, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the handyman or “Homo habilis” and the Zinjanthropus which are displayed in a small museum at the site. The Olduvai Gorge is located on the route leading to the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Kondoa Rock Paintings

Located in Kolo, approximately 260 kilometers from Arusha, this UNESCO World Heritage site has ancient rock art that includes humans as well as wild animals such as giraffes, elephants, and elands. The Kondoa Rock Paintings are of high quality and date back roughly 10,000 years. The majority of the paintings are in dark red and are credited to the bushmen who lived in the region as hunters and gatherers. These bushmen, who were also believed to be the forefathers of the Sandawe tribe utilized clicking noises to communicate. The Sandawe people still reside in this region. the site also features more recent Warangi paintings from around 500 years ago.

The Kolo Rock Paintings are around 160 kilometers from Tarangire National Park, on the Maasai Escarpment bordering the Great Rift Valley. The rock paintings may be viewed on a day excursion on Tanzania safaris to Tarangire National Park or the Maramboi and Lake Burungi districts. The tour lasts about 2 to 3 hours and also includes a visit to the neighboring Pahi highlands.

Bagamoyo, 75 kilometers north of Dar es Salaam, was formerly one of the most significant commercial centers on the East African Coast and a well-known embarkation point for slaves from the countryside. The center was established by the German colonialists in the 1880s as their first German East African capital. Bagamoyo plays an important role in world history as an entrance point for Arabs, European missionaries, explorers, and traders throughout East and Central Africa, as well as in the history of the slave trade. Fortunately, Bagamoyo is currently being examined for inclusion as a World Heritage site to maintain and safeguard the magnificent Gothic and Afro-Arabic architecture in this historic seaside hamlet.

Tourists on Tanzania cultural tours to Bagamoyo can visit the Kaole remains, one of Islam’s which date back to the 12th century, the Old Fort, which was erected in 1860 to keep slaves en route to Zanzibar, the first Roman Catholic Church in East Africa, built around 1868, Livingstone Memorial Church, the German colonial administration headquarters, and the Mission Museum. Moreover, Bagamoyo’s white sand beaches are not to be missed.

TANZANIA CULTURAL EXPERIENCE ADVENTURES

D ue to Tanzania’s rich cultural diversity there are numerous cultural programmes allowing visitors an insight into the different lifestyles among the 120 tribes within Tanzanian borders. The Maasai pastoralists are the most frequently encountered tribe as visitors pass through their homelands to reach parks such as Serengeti. Their livelihood revolves around their livestock, cows, sheep and goats which graze the open plains alongside the wildlife. Their homesteads are constructed from sticks, mud and dung. Visitors are encouraged to visit only designated villages ,as this ensures fees collected are fairly distributed. As well as showing you around, they will perform song and dance and the women make beaded goods which you have the opportunity to purchase.

Cultural Tourism in Tanzania

Cultural Tourism in Tanzania ( Tanzania cultural tours)  includes safaris into the country by travelers who are interested in the cultural heritage and history of the different tribes in Tanzania. Tanzania is a home of more than 120 ethnic groups, finds itself having the crucial potentiality of organizing and conducting cultural tourism. Due to its peaceful, humble, harmonious and self-esteemed people, it’s easier to collaborate with local residents to form different cultural tourism enterprises (cultural tourism programs) without conflict among people.

Cultural Tourism in Tanzania

Tanzania is blessed by having many tourist attractions that make it be among the best countries in the world which receive many tourists. It also makes Tanzania the best place in the world to conduct tourism activities . Some of these are game drives/game viewing , beach tourism, agro-tourism birding safaris , and many others.

Above all is that the local communities are the ones which gain more from cultural tourism because the livelihood is improved in many ways in terms of community infrastructure, employment, health facilities and much more.

Evolution of Cultural Tourism

Cultural tourism in Tanzania started in 1994 as the request from youth Maasai who wanted to operate tourism activities in their village. The idea was fantastic since it aimed to start the program from scratch, hence beneficiaries are people from the community around.

Cultural Tourism Programs

In Tanzania, we have more than 40 Cultural Tourism Programmes which generally have almost the same objectives such as ensuring gender empowerment, to eliminate poverty and bring a sense of ownership of tourism to the local people.

These cultural tourism programmes support community at large because in areas where these programmes take place there is some improvement of local people livelihood either individually or in a collective manner, by getting income via tourism activities taking place in the particular community. Cultural tourism enterprises that operate in different circuits of tourism in Tanzania are Mto Wa Mbu Cultural Tourism Enterprise, Chilunga Cultural Tourism Programme, Bujora Cultural Tourism, Uyole Cultural Tourism Programme and Matunda Cultural Tourism Programme.

Mto wa Mbu Cultural Tourism Programme

Mto Wa Mbu cultural tourism started in 1996 under the great support from Dutch people who provided financial and technical support. They ran the programme for about five years later on they left the programme to local people who were local guides in the enterprise and to date the programme is having more than forty(40)  local guides.

Mto Wa Mbu is the village located in Monduli district that found at Arusha city, takes about 3 hours to reach the village by public buses and only two hours when using private cars. Mto Wa Mbu is closest to Lake Manyara National Park and the main road to Serengeti national park and Ngorongoro conservation area. Also, the village has well-designed trails for bike tours and cultural walks.

It offers different tours to visitors where visitors will visit different cultural attractions like Bujora church, Sukuma royal pavilion, Sukuma traditional homestead, Sukuma archives, and medicine’s man.

Impacts of tourism to local communities

Local communities have benefited a lot from cultural tours organized in their areas. There are two ways that local people benefit from cultural tours that take place within the community, these ways referred to as benefit sharing mechanism by which contribution can either benefit one individually or collectively.

  • Directly (individual) benefit sharing mechanisms

In this mechanism, community member(s) get benefits from cultural tours by selling their stuff to tourists and thus they generate their daily income directly. Examples of people who generate benefits directly are people who do business in curio shops, women who cook food for tourists, Makonde wood carvings-based people, painters, street vendors, and local market dealers.

Also, people who benefit directly from cultural tourism program by being hired as local guides because, in the guideline for establishing and operating cultural tourism enterprises, people who are recommended as a guide are those with knowledge about the community hence the beneficiaries are local people who know the better geography and history of the place.

On the other hand, side, local people get to benefit directly by serving accommodation services to visitors who may have booked over-night tours to experience the real life of Tanzanian, especially those who live in rural areas. These are some direct benefits sharing mechanism.

  • Indirectly (collectively) benefit sharing mechanisms

These include all benefits that the communities gain in a collective manner that means all the benefits gained at large and every member of the community gains regardless of either talent, knowledge of doing something in the community, as far as they are community members enjoy the significance of tourism activities in their community.

Supporting health centers, improving infrastructures in the community, aiding orphanage centers, building some school infrastructures and volunteering in different community projects, are some of collective benefits communities gain from tourism activities.

Community participation and involvement in operating cultural tourism programs

In operating cultural tours, there must be community involvement in each and every stage of planning, running and organizing. Therefore without consulting indigenous people in the community high resistance from the community will be expected. When the community is well involved it will be easy for the enterprise to operate and finally, local people will cooperate actively by allowing tourists to take some pictures even to allow their properties like cattle and farms to be used as attractions.

Also, involvement can be by making preparedness to the community via community capacity building where local people will be taught how to do things that can be served to tourists so that community members can sustain their life via tourism. Teaching a foreign language also will build the capacity for the community to receive and serve visitors in their community.

Therefore, cultural tourism is of most important to Tanzania as it raises the community lifestyle especially the Maasai culture and the Mto Wa Mbu program.
