Cunard dress code: What to wear on a Cunard cruise

The Cunard dress code includes casual clothing and smart attire, as well as classic formal gowns and tuxedos.

In this article

  • The dress code
  • What to wear during the day – the daytime Cunard dress code
  • What to wear on Cunard shore excursions
  • The evening Cunard dress code

The Cunard dress code is considered to be the most traditional of all luxury cruise lines. The dress code ranges from casual to formal. However, what you wear depends on the time of day and the activities you have planned.

Most guests on a Cunard cruise wear casual clothes in the morning and afternoon, but at night they like to dress up. This is especially so on formal nights which include themed balls.

Do Cunard cruises have formal nights?

Yes, there are formal nights on all Cunard cruises. These are known as Gala nights. There is at least one formal night on every cruise.

Do you need to wear a tie on a Cunard cruise?

No, the Cunard dress code doesn’t require a tie unless it is a Gala night. On those occasions a tie or bow tie should be worn.

Do you have to dress up on Gala (formal) nights?

No, you can dress in Smart Attire in the these venues:

  • The Lido Restaurant
  • The Golden Lion pub
  • The Yacht Club
  • Cafe Corinthia
  • The Garden Lounge

How many Gala (formal) nights are on a Cunard cruise?

The number of Gala nights depends on the length of the cruise. Voyages of 7-days or less typically have one  Gala night, while longer voyages include two or more Gala nights.

What to wear in the spa on Cunard ships?

Dress in casual resort-wear, or the robe supplied in your stateroom or suite.

A couple dressed in Smart Attire, according to the Cunard dress code.

Days spent on board Cunard ships are leisurely, so you should wear clothing that feels comfortable and relaxed.

Cunard suggest casual-wear in public areas during the day. For women this includes T-shirts, shorts, slacks, blouses and dresses. Men can wear T-shirts, shorts, jeans or shirts.

Attire on the open decks is even more relaxed. Swimsuits and sarongs are always acceptable around the pools. However, it’s worth noting that you can’t wear a swimsuit in any dining venue. So if you want to eat in a restaurant for breakfast or lunch, be sure to allow time for a quick change in your stateroom or suite.

What you wear on a shore excursion depends on various factors including the climate, cultural sensitivities and the activities you might undertake. However, the rule of thumb is to ensure your clothing is comfortable. Also, be prepared for unexpected changes in the weather.

Shore excursions in warm climates usually only require light fitting clothing. Also, we recommend a broad brimmed hat for protection from the sun.

In cool weather you should wear more clothing. Long pants, sweaters or knits are all recommended, as well as scarfs and even puffer jackets. It’s wise to wear layers, so you can peel off between outdoor and indoor environments.

Cultural sensitivities will also impact what you wear on a shore excursion. Indeed, some cultural or religious sites have strict dress codes. So you might need to wear clothing that covers your arms, legs or head. Consult the Cunard shore excursions desk if you are unsure about what to wear.

Evenings on a Cunard cruise have a sense of occasion with a dress code to match. After 5:45pm the dress code will be either Smart Attire or Gala . The dress code will be posted in the Cunard newsletter known as the Daily Programme.

The Daily Programme newsletter on Queen Elizabeth.

Smart Attire

On Smart Attire nights ladies wear blouses and skirts or stylish trousers and dresses. On the other hand, men dress in trousers with a collared shirt. A jacket and tie is optional. Cunard liken it to the sort of thing you’d wear to a stylish restaurant or the theatre.

Gala (formal)

On Gala (or formal) nights ladies should wear an evening or cocktail dress, smart trouser suit or formal separates. Men should wear a dinner jacket, tuxedo or dark suit with either a tie or bow tie.

However, it’s worth noting that Gala nights may also adopt a theme. Cunard invite you to embellish or tailor your attire according to the theme. These themes include:

  • Black and White

Red and Gold

Roaring 20s, masquerade ball.

The Gala nights and their themes will be posted with your booking information in the My Cunard online portal prior to your cruise.

Black and white

Cunard encourage you to join the monochrome theme with evening wear in full black or white, or patterns that combine black and white.

Add a red bow tie or sparkling gold accents to embrace the theme. Alternatively, gentlemen may don a red dinner jacket while the ladies wear a red or gold gown.

A simple hint of the theme is all that’s required. For instance, an art deco printed pocket square or a feathered slide in your hair. On the other hand, you can go all out with a flapper dress or braces and a trilby.

Gala attire meets Venetian Carnivalle. Whatever you decide to wear, bring along a mask to match.

Most guests like to dress up on Gala nights, but you don’t have to. If you’d prefer a more relaxed evening you can wear Smart Attire in The Lido Restaurant, The Golden Lion pub, The Yacht Club, Cafe Corinthia, The Garden Lounge or The Casino.

Cunard Dress Code – (Mens, Womens, Childrens – Real Examples)

In this article, we look at the dress codes onboard Cunard’s ships. They have some of the most strict dress codes at sea – particularly on their transatlantic sailings.

What should I wear on Cunard’s Formal Nights? (Gala nights)

As a general rule of thumb, I would say that anything you would wear to a wedding is suitable for Cunard’s Formal Nights.

For women, a wedding/prom dress seems to be the ideal look. I saw some gorgeous dresses and some very impressive headpieces – I don’t think it is possible to be overdressed for the formal nights with Cunard.

For men, a Tuxedo or dark suit and tie is generally worn.

cunard dress code examples womens mens childrens

Evening wear consists of an evening or cocktail dress or smart trouser suit for ladies.

Floor-length dresses in sumptuous silks. Ball gowns encrusted with jewels. And off-the-shoulder cocktail dresses that kiss every curve. When it comes to formal nights on board (we call them Gala Evenings) our guests really do dress to impress. We theme these evenings to add even more of a sense of glamour to the occasion. And we always communicate this in advance so you can pack accordingly. Popular themes include Black & White, Roaring Twenties, and Red & Gold. But whether you simply nod to the theme with an accessory or go the full hog is entirely up to you. Cunard

A Tuxedo, Dinner Jacket or Dark Suit with appropriate neck wear for men – or you may wear formal national dress and military uniform.
Formal suits are only required on board a Transatlantic cruise on Gala Evenings and, even then, there’s no pressure to dress-up if you don’t want to. Most of our guests, however, relish the opportunity to put on a Tuxedo for one night and channel their James Bond alter-ego. A formal suit, shirt, and tie of any colour will also do just fine for Gala Evening. And if you want to embrace the theme in your outfit choice, well you’re more than welcome to do that too. We’ve had many gentlemen on board who’ve given their partners a run for their money when it comes to their Gala Evening attire. So feel free to be as lavish as you like. Cunard

Which dresses can Women wear on a Cunard cruise?

Midi dresses (i would not consider wearing a dress much shorter than knee length)..

  • There are plenty of options for Midi Dresses. Below is a dress that I wore onboard Celebrity Edge that I could quite comfortably wear to a formal night onboard Cunard.
  • The main aim of Cunard’s dress code seems to be to look elegant and classy, as a result, I would try not to have TOO much skin on display. Of course, this is your decision but this is my personal preference.

Midi Dress Examples:

Cunard dress code examples – Lace dresses:

I LOVE a lace dress. I like how the below dresses have little sleeves. Cruise ships can often be really cold and I don’t like to have my shoulders uncovered.

Cunard Dress Code Examples Lace Dress

Cunard dress code examples –  Bodycon Dresses:

Bodycon dresses are always classy and can actually be quite comfy. Just make sure that these are not too short because sometimes they can be.

I am a fan of bright solid colours (usually red) but you could also pick a floral pattern or spots/stripes! Dresses can be found here:

Long dresses floor-length dresses (Maxi dresses)

  • There are a number of different styles of maxi dresses but I would avoid wearing anything that could be worn to the beach. Dresses with straps/no straps shouldn’t be a problem. Below is a photo of me onboard the Queen Victoria.
  • Long dresses are also a bonus because the ships can be pretty cold. The air conditioning is usually good so having something to cover your legs is a good idea.
  • If you are wearing a dress like the one I am wearing below make sure you bring a shrug or cover up. The restaurants are pretty cold.

Maxi Dress Examples:

When buying maxi dresses it is important to avoid buying ones that look too “Beachy.”

Some will have crisscrossed back straps or generally be made of t-shirt material. I would say that these would not be suitable.

If you could wear it to the beach you probably shouldn’t wear it to a formal night onboard Cunard. The below examples can be found here:

Visiting the ‘wedding’ section of any website would be a good place to start if you really want to embrace the dress code.

  • I was really impressed by this as on other cruise lines you often have no other options than to pay to have your clothes washed.

Skirt Examples:

Cunard dress code examples  – pencil skirts:.

I would normally go for a fitted skirt. Usually in a pencil-type style.

Again I would try and make sure that this isn’t too short and you don’t have to constantly pull it down.

There isn’t a lot more annoying than being unable to walk two steps without having to pull down your skirt. Your main concern should definitely be your comfort.

Skirts can be found here:

Full skirts can also be really pretty and classy when paired with the right top.

I rarely wear long skirts (not really sure why). I imagine that they’re very practical when you head to the theatre after dinner and the air conditioning is up high. I’m always freezing.

Can Woman Wear Trousers on a Cunard Cruise?

  • A pair of smart trousers and a blouse/top will be just fine.

Smart Trousers Examples:

Wearing smart trousers doesn’t mean wearing black trousers!

I often avoid wearing trousers because I feel as though I’m going to work/school – but that doesn’t have to be the case at all.

What Should Men Wear on a Cunard Cruise?

For men, the Gala night dress code is a dinner jacket, tuxedo or dark suit. 95% of people seemed to stick to this when I was onboard.

Anybody who didn’t really did stick out. Bow Ties are highly recommended!

cunard dress code men suits bow tie

If you are a man you could consider the following outfits:

  • This is the most popular thing worn by men onboard. You can’t really go wrong with a suit in black/dark navy/dark grey. This is what the majority of men onboard wear.
  • Cunard themselves say a formal suit, shirt, and tie of any colour is acceptable, but In my personal experience, I haven’t seen many men in bright colours. I did once seen a man in a pink suit – he looked amazing!

Dark suit examples:

The following suits are from M&S and can be found here.

Light Suit Examples:

Just because you’re wearing a suit doesn’t mean you have to stick to traditional colours!

My favourite suit that I’ve ever seen on a man is pink. White or Cream suits can also look amazing – and I think particularly good on cruises in warmer climates!

Sometimes it’s nice to wear something that you wouldn’t wear in normal life.

Can you wear national dress/kilts on Cunard cruises?

Yes! You can wear National Dress.

What should I pack for the Formal night with Cunard?  (Now ‘Gala night’)

For my 7-night cruise, I bought 3 dresses which I would call ‘nice’ dresses.

They took up most of my suitcase! I also brought a couple of smaller shrugs to keep me warm.

The dining room was a little chilly, (I suppose they have to have it that way as the men aren’t meant to take off their jackets).

I bought a pair of smart sandals and one pair of black heels which I wore on formal nights.

Cunard Packing List:

  • Dresses (long or short, but think elegant)
  • Skirts/Trousers with nice tops/blouses/shirt
  • Smart sandals/heels or flats
  • Small shrug to keep you warm
  • Bling up your outfit with any jewellery that you have.

A cruise is a perfect opportunity to go a bit mad and try new things. Why not try wearing something you’d never normally wear? You won’t see anybody that you know …

Shrug/Cover-up examples:

A shrug is really just a little cardigan used to cover up your shoulders and arms when it’s cold.

I would 100% recommend buying one of these for your cruises. I have a black one like the middle picture which I take on every cruise with me.

It’s black so it goes with most of my outfits and it’s so useful around the ship.

M&S Shrugs*

Jewellery is really personal and I don’t see how you could go too wrong anything.

I tend to like my jewellery to match (matching earrings and necklace) for example but this doesn’t have to be the case.

I usually try and keep my jewellery understated rather than bold but if you are somebody who can pull off a pair of colourful earrings feel free to go for it!

The necklace is the perfect way to glam up any outfit.

I usually just wear simple earrings but dangling earrings can also be nice and really compliment an outfit.

If you are really planning on going ‘all out’ you could even coordinate your earrings with your shoes or bag!

Find my favourite cruise bags here:

I bought my first Mia Tui bag in 2017 and I've not used another brand since. They come with me on every cruise and are FANTASTIC. They are beautiful, almost indestructible and have so many pockets and useful parts.

How many formal ‘Gala’ Nights will there be on a Cunard cruise?

On a 7-night cruise, there will be two or three.

Every three or so nights is usually a good formula to use. If you are taking a short cruise you may only have one formal night.

REMEMBER: This is YOUR cruise and you are there to have a good time. Wear whatever makes you feel happy! You can always eat in the buffet if you would rather avoid dressing up altogether.

How formal are Cunard’s Informal Nights? (Now ‘Smart Attire’ Nights)

Informal nights onboard Cunard are still more formal than those on other cruise lines.

They certainly are a lot more formal than I would ever dress in my normal day to day life.

The only real difference with informal nights is that men can wear a normal suit and can take off that dreaded bow tie (phew!).

Women can put down the prom dress and pick up one which is almost as nice… maybe a little bit less sparkly.

If you do want to make an effort in the evening you won’t be alone. The majority of guests travelling with us embrace the chance to switch to smart attire by night. This doesn’t mean you’ll be expected to wear a gown or dinner jacket each evening. Smart attire simply means a dress shirt and trousers, skirt and a top, or a cocktail dress. Essentially, choose something along the same vein as you’d wear to a stylish restaurant or the theatre on a special occasion. Cunard

Sheltered Balcony Queen Mary 2 Formal night

Think of an evening out instead of a wedding.

I honestly didn’t see much difference between the formal and informal nights – maybe that’s because I rarely cruise with formal dining and as a result, it all seemed a bit posh for me!

To me, Informal = Jeans. *THIS IS NOT CUNARD’S DEFINITION.

Evenings would consist of a jacket and optional tie for gentlemen, whilst ladies should wear cocktail dresses, stylish separates or equivalent. No jeans or shorts.

I honestly missed my jeans by the end of the week…

Can You Wear Jeans on a Cunard Cruise?

During the day guests are able to wear jeans on Cunard cruises.

Jeans would not be appropriate for formal or informal nights and would not be allowed to be worn around the ship in the evenings.

Cunard’s Dress codes apply ship-wide from 6pm , but the buffet and the pub are excluded

What is the daytime dress code with Cunard?

When walking around the ship in the daytime I did not make any special effort to dress up.

I would think twice about wearing anything particularly skimpy or revealing but in general, you can wear whatever you want during the day.

cunard cruise evening wear

The ship was so grand that I did feel a little out of place running around in my casual clothes , even in the day time!

What should children wear on a Cunard cruise?

Children under 18 do not have a dress code but should adhere to the daily dress code where possible. Cunard

Many children do join in with formal nights and it can be a fantastic opportunity to have photos taken.

I love it when children wear matching suits/dresses as their parents. It can be really cute! M&S have suits for babies from 3 months – Baby’s first tuxedo… !

Children’s Formal Dress Examples:

Cunard dress code examples – boys:.

Because there are no official dress codes for children you can play around with the level of formality.

A jacket or blazer paired with a smart pair of trousers can be perfect for boys.

A full tuxedo and bow tie is also acceptable! If you do have children onboard I would recommend that you try to ‘dress up’ even though the dress code isn’t enforced.

Boys suits can be found here:

M&S Boys Suits*

Cunard Dress Code Boys Suits M&S

Cunard dress code examples – Girls:

I would say that anything appropriate for women for formal night would be appropriate for girls.

Midi/Maxi dresses, skirts or formal trousers. Again there is no enforced dress code for girls but it can be a great opportunity to dress up.

When shopping online if you select ‘party dresses’ these are probably the most appropriate.

M&S Girls Party Dresses .

Cunard Dress Code Girls M&S Dresses

What is the dress Code For Afternoon Tea On Cunard?

I believe there is a dress code for afternoon tea – although it didn’t seem to be enforced.

I managed to get into afternoon tea wearing shorts (although I don’t think you are meant to)

Onboard the Queen Victoria afternoon tea was in quite an open area so you could just sit down and be brought tea and cakes by waiters wearing white gloves.

I didn’t feel pressured to dress up for afternoon tea like I did in the main restaurants.

I loved the afternoon tea – it was my favourite thing about Cunard by a million miles.

Would I do it again?

I did enjoy dressing up and having my photograph taken. It was interesting to walk around the ship and see what everybody else was wearing.

I did find the dress code a little annoying in the sense that it applied in all public areas. I am more comfortable in jeans and not being able to wear them after 6 for a whole week was tough!!

For a week or less, I would definitely consider cruising with Cunard and dressing up for dinner but I don’t think I would like to dress formally for any great length of time.

Great blog post! I'm 21 and I love cruising too, I wish people would consider it more rather than be scared of being 'at sea' all the time! I'm going on my next Cunard in the new year as my 21st birthday present and this really gave me a refresher on what to wear. I voted for you in that blog competition too!

Thank you for your review. I am pleased you enjoyed the cruise . As a younger person, did you find Cunard boring at all? I am an avid Cunard passenger but much older than you. I love to dress to the nines and certainly do so on eveycruise on an evening. Day time I wear regular day clothes , beach wear etc. Not dressing up on Cunard is not a good idea as you do stand out as you stated. Did your parents who booked the cruise realise there was a strict dress code? If so did they not explain this to you? You are young and pretty so could get away wearing less glamorous outfits, but older people do need to be aware the dress code is taken seriously. It us one of the main reasons most people choose Cunard for the formality of their elegant ships. Thanks for posting and hope you cruise Cunard again.

Thanks for your comment! I was aware that formal nights would be formal but I thought that informal nights would be, well... informal!

I didn't find it boring, it was very different to any other cruise I've been on. Wandering around the ship there was rarely anything 'going on' which I'm used to from cruise lines like NCL. The ships were so quiet too! Totally not what I am used to.

Just depends what you want from a cruise I suppose, Cunard cruises certainly are 'relaxing!' I would consider another. (For the right price...)

Thanks again for commenting.

Cunard Dress Code - What to pack for a Cunard Cruise!

Cunard Cruises have a reputation for being the most formal cruise line in the world. People often don’t book a cruise with this company because they think you have to dress formally every night. The reality is that is not the case. During the day it is very relaxed and most evenings it is smart attire except for the Gala nights.

Cunard do have formal nights that they call Gala nights. It depends on the length of the cruise as to how many there will be. On a four night cruise you can expect one which in our experience on the Queen Elizabeth Cruise Ship was the Black and White Gala night. However on our 4 night Queen Mary 2 cruise we had two, which were just Gala Nights. This was because the cruise could of been booked as two night cruises too. On a weeks cruise expect two, and on our ten night cruise there were three Gala Nights, Black and White, Red and Gold and Roaring 20’s. On a two week cruise expect four which can also include the Masquerade Gala Night.

Here we explain what the Gala nights mean and what you should pack for your Cunard cruise. An important point to understand is that dressing up for the formal nights is not compulsory and you do not have to join in with the Gala nights if you do not want to. There are other areas around the ship which you can enjoy. However we would recommend that you do as it was great to see everyone dressed up and we think an important part of the Cunard experience.

In this post you will find out what is acceptable to wear for all the Gala Nights and what is acceptable dress for the day and evenings on a regular night on a Cunard cruise. You will then know exactly what you need to pack and will not have to worry!

Also note before your cruise you will be able to access My Cunard with your booking number and see which Gala Nights will be on your particular cruise by going to your calender.

Cunard Dress Code - What to pack for a Cunard Cruises Gala Night

On our Queen Elizabeth cruises all the Gala nights were themed which are explained below, however on Queen Mary 2, we had two gala nights that were just called ‘Gala Nights’.

Gala Night is just like any other formal night on any cruise line, and any style or colour goes. If you want to go full ball gown you would not look out of place, or a a simple black dress would do too. For men a suit and tie, or tuxedo and bow tie is appropriate.

Cunard Dress Code - What to pack for Cunard Cruises Black and White Gala Night

Cunard Queen Elizabeth Britannia Restaurant

The theme for the Black and White night is exactly that, a monochrome outfit of your choice. It states this in the Daily Programme – ‘Dinner Jacket, tuxedo or dark suit with regular tie or bow tie for gentlemen. Evening or cocktail dress, smart trouser suit or formal separates for ladies. *Guests are welcome to embellish their Gala Evening attire to fit the applicable theme of the evening, for Black and White night, by dressing in simple, monochrome finery.’

As mentioned above it is not compulsory to join in with these Gala evenings and the daily programme also says ‘Relax – Feel free to dress casually as you visit any of the following venues: Lido Restaurant, Golden Lion, Casino, Cafe Corinthia, Garden Lounge and The Yacht Club.’

However the Gala nights are amazing to be part of and we would definitely recommend packing a simple outfit so you can join in. Every cruise I pack a knee length black dress and this was perfect for the black and white gala night. Paul packed his tuxedo and bow tie which worked well too. As long as your outfit is black, white or both then that will be fine.

The formal Red and Gold Gala night is a celebration of Cunard’s rich heritage. Putting on a red dress or a red suit jacket, a red or gold waist coat would work but also a simple flash of red in a scarf or tie does the trick. For the Red and Gold night on our cruise, Paul wore a red shirt, I wore a red top and we both wore black trousers which worked well.

For the Roaring 20’s Gala Night the Cunard daily programme just states ‘For Roaring 20’s night, go all out glamour or adorn a flourish which embraces the spirit of the decade.’ A simple hint towards the theme such as braces or a black and white fedora hat for the men and a feathered boa or slide for the ladies would work. We wore similar outfits to the black and white night and others did too. However, some of the passengers went full gangster and flapper mode and it was fabulous to see. We have now purchased some flapper gear as you can see above!

What can I wear during the evening on a Cunard cruise when it is not a Gala night?

Cunard dress code smart attire

When it wasn’t Gala Night the dress code for the evenings is smart attire. On the daily programme it states ‘Gentlemen we request that you wear trousers with a collared shirt, jacket and tie is optional. Ladies, blouses and skirts or stylish trousers and dresses are welcome.’

Men just need to wear a shirt or polo with a collar and ladies a simple smart outfit that could be trousers/skirt with a simple top/cardigan or jumper. If you are used to cruising then this is the same as you would wear on any smart dress evenings.

Any thing goes in the day and the evening themes as explained above come in place at 1800.

We put off cruising with Cunard for to long as we thought that we would have to dress formally all the time and this is definitely not the case. We hope this post has been useful so you can now understand what you can wear on a Cunard cruise.

Cunard Dress Code: What To Wear On Your Cruise?

Guests dressed warmly in Glacier Bay National Park on Cunard Queen Elizabeth

When we booked our Cunard Alaska cruise, we had heard Cunard’s dress code was quite formal. Since most Alaska cruises are very casual, we wondered how it would compare with other lines.

Being British, I grew up with the routine of dressing for dinner but wondered how formal or how strict Cunard was with their dress code. Also, some passengers chose not to book with Cunard because of their dress code.

So, if you’re considering booking Queen Elizabeth , Queen Mary , or Queen Victoria and are curious about their dress code , this article explains what you can wear onboard.

Cunard’s Daytime Wear

Boarding Queen Elizabeth in Vancouver, we wore shorts and t-shirts. After all, it was July 1st and a hot day. We expected to see others less casual than us, but everyone wore similar clothing.

Dressed casually while boarding Cunard Queen Elizabeth

We met a young man who had flown in from Quebec, and the airline had put everyone’s luggage on the wrong plane. So, he boarded the 10-day cruise to Alaska with the clothes on his back, and I wondered how he would manage.

During the day, Cunard’s dress code is the same as every other cruise line. Jeans, shorts, and t-shirts are acceptable clothing in restaurants and around the ship. Their daywear could be considered smart casual.

Every day, Queen Elizabeth served afternoon tea in the Queen’s Room. I’m sure the event happens every day on other Cunard ships. Even that event allowed for casual clothing. We enjoyed two afternoon teas and wore shorts and t-shirts one day.

Since we were cruising in Glacier Bay National Park the following day, I attended in a sweater and long pants before stepping outside again. Our itinerary included both Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier.

Dressed in a sweater for Cunard afternoon tea

It was pretty cold at Hubbard Glacier, even in July. So, we wore jeans, sweaters, and a waterproof jacket while out on the deck. Since our cruise ship was sailing at less than 50% capacity, we enjoyed the decks with very few guests.

On the promenade deck, we could snuggle under wool blankets provided by Cunard while enjoying the scenic views. The promenade deck was a great place to escape the crowds on the upper decks.

When it was time to eat, we stepped inside and had lunch in the dining room, in what we were wearing.

Cunard’s Dinner Dress Code

Dinnertime is when Cunard changes its dress code. If you want to eat in the dining room or specialty restaurant, you can’t wear shorts, t-shirts, or flip-flops.

I had been on other cruise lines where people showed up to a formal night in beach wear, and the cruise line didn’t enforce the dress code policy. So, I wondered if it would be the same on a Cunard cruise ship.

However, Cunard attracts guests who follow the rules and dress for the occasion. I wore dress slacks or a skirt with a blouse for our evening meals.

My husband, Brian, wore a collared shirt and dark trousers (dress pants). Cunard also recommends a dinner jacket, but not all men wear one.

Brian in a collared shirt, eating at the Verandah Steakhouse

If passengers didn’t want to dress for dinner, they could enjoy a casual evening at the buffet. Cunard Queen Elizabeth’s food choices were excellent. While some other line’s buffets resembled a college cafeteria, I was impressed with Cunard’s.

You can’t beat Cunard’s food which tasted as good as it looked. The Lido restaurant had an allergy section with gluten, dairy, and sugar-free choices.

Queen Elizabeth has one specialty restaurant called the Veranda Steakhouse. We dined there one evening, and its dress code was no different than eating in the main dining room.

Gala Night Themes

Some cruise lines have relaxed their dress codes and moved away from formal nights, and call them something else. “Evening chic,” is the dress-up night on a Celebrity cruise, and Royal Caribbean’s dressier nights are called “wear your best.”

Dressed for Cunard's "White Ice" gala night in Alaska

Interestingly, Oceania Cruises have no formal nights, yet Costa Cruises retain its formal dinners. Norwegian Cruise Line uses the phrase “dress up or not,” giving guests the option of staying casual.

However, Cunard has stuck to its formal evening attire called “gala nights,” encouraging guests to go all out. By keeping their formal nights, they attract travelers who enjoy dressing up.

The formal wear consists as follows: men are expected to wear a dark suit and a tie or a tuxedo with a bow tie. And the majority comply.

Women can wear a cocktail dress and or an evening gown. Since Brian and I like to dress up, seeing everyone dressed to the nines on a gala evening was refreshing. Brian even purchased a tuxedo just for this cruise.

Cunard puts a twist on their formal nights, giving them a theme. Their website lists their themes as Masquerade, Red and Gold, Black and White, and Roaring 20s. We had hoped to get Red and Gold and Masquerade.

What we wore for Cunard's Roaring 20s gala evening.

Cunard only conveyed our theme nights to us about ten days before our sailing, and I wished we had known sooner. Our themes were “White Ice” and “Roaring 20s.”

The roaring 20s theme was easy to adapt to. Brian bought suspenders and a black Fedora hat from a party store to complete his look. I chose to accessorize what I had without purchasing a flapper dress that I’d probably only wear once.

While the themes are meant to be fun, Cunard doesn’t expect guests to purchase whole new formal attire for the evening . So, I got  long white gloves from a party store and wore them with long beads from the dollar store.

I created a 20s headpiece using a dollar store hairband by adding beads and a pompom. While we only spent a small amount to fit the event, we received many compliments for our outfits. Alternatively, it’s inexpensive to buy online.

Wearing my roaring 20s homemade headpiece

The 20s night was fun, with so many guests trying to conform to the theme. It actually made the evening a bit more unique and out of the ordinary.

Alaska Gala Night

Cunard introduced a new “White Ice” theme to their Alaska itineraries. It represents the glacial ice of Hubbard Glacier and glaciers in Glacial Bay National Park.

Unfortunately, Cunard hasn’t added the theme to their website, and many guests were confused about what they should wear. Were the men expected to wear white? What if we didn’t like white?

White isn’t my best color because I have olive skin, so I had nothing in my wardrobe in white. Since I wanted to dress for the gala night, I purchased a white dress, and Brian wore a tuxedo.

I was surprised by how many men wore tuxedos, and a few wore dark suits. One man came smartly dressed in a kilt and entire Scottish attire.

Dressed for Cunard's White Ice gala night

Since most guests interpreted the theme as the colors of ice, ladies wore white, pale grey, aqua, and pale blue. Some were totally confused by the theme and wore what they had, although most made an effort to wear paler colors.

I saw more long evening gowns than any other line I’ve sailed. However, I chose to wear two cocktail dresses.

Interestingly, no one tried to dine in the main dining room wearing something outside the dress code. Those who preferred not to dress up went to the Lido instead. That probably included the young man with lost luggage.

Cunard elevated the event by adding white flowers and crystal accents in the Grand Lobby and dining room. The restaurant staff gave guests a complimentary glass of champagne during dinner, and the staff was dressed elegantly too.

Renting A Tuxedo

If you don’t have a suit or tuxedo, Cunard has a rental service. You can rent a tuxedo or pieces of a suit for one or multiple nights. So, if you have black pants and a white shirt, you can rent just the tuxedo jacket.

If you’re cruising to an area that requires so much clothing variety, such as Alaska, renting a suit can save space in your luggage.

During our cruise, I was surprised that passengers heavily utilized the rental service. I saw racks of tuxedos outside a store on gala days, ready for pickup.

Final Thoughts

While a Cunard cruise may be more formal on certain evenings, expect daytimes to be cruise casual. What you pack will depend on your chosen itinerary and the number of days cruising.

The Caribbean and Mediterranean require more beachwear and sandals. Contrasting that, guests going to the Baltics or Alaska would need waterproof clothing, layers, and a warm jacket.

As always, dressing for dinner or gala events is totally optional. The Lido offers the same food as the main room if you prefer to dine casually.

While we booked our Cunard cruise expecting it to be overly formal, nothing could be further from the truth.

My wife and I are taking a 6 day Vancouver to LA cruise on The Queen Elizabeth, so thanks for the dress code update. I must say the two of you looked great! We both like to dress up so look forward to the Ice Night (the only one that is being offered). We have been on Celebrity cruises and find it disappointing when there are so few people that make an effort - so sad.

Forever Karen

We love to dress up too and it's a shame formal nights have become optional on most cruise lines now. Have a wonderful cruise on the Queen Elizabeth.

The cunard dress code – from casual to glamorous, what to wear on your cunard cruise.

Take the stress out of packing for your cruise with my guide to the Cunard dress code with suggestions on what to wear onboard.

Packing for a cruise is not always as straightforward as you might think. As well as having to take into account your destination and any activities you plan to do you also need to think about the cruise line’s dress code.

Cunard cruise ships in particular are known for being traditional and elegant harking back to a bygone era of ocean travel. The Cunard dress code has a reputation for being quite formal and although it has been relaxed recently, it can still be difficult to know what to pack so you dress accordingly for each occasion.

I know I was quite worried before my cruise. I thought it would be a bit stuffy, formal and I wouldn’t fit in having packed all the wrong clothes! Thankfully, it wasn’t quite like that.

So, if the dress code on Cunard ships is making you a little apprehensive about taking a voyage with them, read on for some tips on what to wear based on my experience of cruising on the Queen Mary 2.

Cruising with Cunard

I was keen to take a voyage with Cunard but the one thing that worried me was the dress code issue. Having spent some time in various Facebook groups and reading people’s comments I feared I would be frowned upon if I didn’t have a ball gown or cocktail dress for the evening or even if I wore my jeans during the day.

Thankfully, it wasn’t like that at all. Yes, it was a little more smart and less casual than some other cruise lines I’ve travelled with but it wasn’t black tie every night. I was worrying for nothing really.

Cunard Dress Code

The dress code on Cunard ships varies depending on the time of day. It also varies in the different restaurants and venues onboard so you’ll need to pack a variety of clothes to cover all eventualities.

How do I know what the dress code is each night?

There are a couple of ways you can check the dress code for each night of your cruise. Before you travel you’ll find details in Cunard’s cruise planner. This is a very handy guide and I recommend checking before you travel as it will help you pack. It should also tell you the theme of the Gala Night for your cruise

Once onboard, you’ll find details in the Daily Programme, Cunard’s daily planner that is left by your door or in your cabin at the end of each day. You’ll find details of the dress code for the following evening at the top of the front page.

What to wear on a Cunard cruise

During the day, the dress code is fairly relaxed. More relaxed than I was expecting it to be actually. My jeans and trainers were fine!

cunard cruise evening wear

If you think along the lines of comfortable holiday wear you won’t go too far wrong. So for men trousers or jeans and a shirt or a t-shirt and shorts are fine. For women, dresses, trousers, blouses, and t-shirts all work well for daywear.

Although you do want to keep mind the climate where you are cruising. You probably wouldn’t want to be wearing your summer wear in winter destinations and vice versa.

Don’t forget though that it can be chilly on deck with the sea breeze so it is also worth packing some light jackets or cardigans for those walks around the promenade deck or playing deck games. When I cruised with Cunard I was fortunate to have some very warm weather so it wasn’t too cold on deck but I was still glad I some layers just in case.

Obviously, if you plan to spend the day by the pool or relax in the spa or a whirlpool, you’ll need your swimwear. A shawl, sarong or cover-up is also useful to have handy. One thing to note is that as you might expect, swimwear is not permitted in the restaurants so if you want to take a break from the pool for lunch you’ll need to change.

So, it’s best to either take something with you that you can change into or plan to go back to your cabin to change. Room service is complimentary on Cunard so if you don’t fancy the hassle of getting changed just to change back in to your swimwear again you can order lunch to your cabin.

If you want to use the gym facilities, make sure you pack your gym kit and definitely don’t forget your trainers (easily done that!). Even if you are not a gym goer it is still a good idea to bring some active wear as there are plenty of other ways to get some exercise on Cunard ships. A few laps around the promenade deck enjoying the sea views and you’ll have got some exercise in before you know it.

One must-have when packing is comfortable shoes as you’ll do a lot of walking around the ship. There is nothing worse than spending long days in uncomfortable shoes with your feet hurting. So, make sure the first thing you pack are your comfy shoes.

When you are in port, you are likely to be spending the day off the ship exploring. What you wear these days depends on your destination a little but the overriding rule should be to go for comfort, both in clothing and footwear.

Whether you take a shore excursion or explore independently, you may find yourself doing a fair bit of walking so you’ll need those comfy shoes again. Clothing-wise, it is much the same. Casual and comfortable should fit the bill. However, you do need to keep your destination in mind.

If you are cruising around the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or any warm climate you’ll want light comfortable clothing to help keep you cool. Think along the lines of loose-fitting clothing and cotton and linen fabrics. Don’t forget your beachwear as well as in both these region you are likely to end up on a beach at some point.

While if you cruise around the Norwegian Fjords or Alaska, where the weather can be quite changeable, you’ll need some warmer clothes just in case. Items you can layer up or down depending on the weather and temperature are good options here. As is a waterproof jacket and umbrella as you might see a lot of rain in these regions.

If you are visiting any cultural or religious sites you may find these have strict dress codes. You will likely have to cover your shoulders, arms and legs. Even your hair and head in some places. Failure to comply with this will probably result in not being able to access the site. Check your itinerary and any locations you want to visit while in port to make sure you are aware of any dress rules so you can pack accordingly.

Whatever your destination, you’ll also want a good day bag that fits your essentials such as wallet or purse, phone, water bottle or beach wear. Don’t forget to pack your phone or camera, whatever you use to take photos, along with some spare batteries. You don’t want to miss any photo opportunities because your battery is flat. Trust me, I’ve been there and its disappointing.

Evening wear

As I mentioned at the start of this post, the evenings on the Queen Mary 2 were what I was most worried about. Most nights on a cruise are smart casual, with an emphasis on smart when cruising with Cunard. However, Gala Evening (their name for formal nights) are well known for being spectacular and glamorous.

All things I’m not.

Traveling solo can make it a little awkward at times too, where you can feel a bit all dressed up with nowhere to go. However, I was worrying for nothing really. Yes, many people dressed up and looked fabulous, but it wasn’t full on black tie every night and I didn’t stand out on my own.

Smart Casual Nights

Most nights onboard Cunard ships have a smart attire dress code. The dress code changes around 6pm in the venues it applies to. It applies to most venues and public spaces including the Main Dining Rooms and the Commodore Club.

The dress code on these nights is not as formal as the gala nights. It’s more like what you would wear if you were going out for the night to a restaurant or theatre. For women that means a dress or a skirt or trousers with a nice top or blouse while for men a jacket or blazer with a shirt is fine.

If you don’t want to dress up that is not a problem, you won’t have to spend all night in your cabin. There are plenty of casual dining venues including the buffet (Kings Court or Lido), Carinthia Lounge and G32.

My last night on board the QM2 I actually spent in jeans. I had dinner in Kings Court and then spent some time on deck for the sailaway and watching the sunset. There was no issues, or funny looks, that I could see.

Cunard Gala Nights

Gala evenings on Cunard have a real sense of occasion. These nights are your chance to dress up to nines. You’ll find many people take part and enjoy them. It is a big part of a Cunard cruise.

Depending on the length of your cruise, you can expect to have one or two of these nights. Cunard asks that guests observe an elevated dress code. Whatever that means? In practice, it is basically a black tie dress code.

Women wear elegant evening wear such as ball gowns, cocktail or stylish dresses, trouser suits or formal separates. Men also get a chance to dress up with many wearing tuxedos.  If you don’t have one of those you can wear a dinner jacket or a dark suit.

Cunard Theme Nights

Gala nights often have a theme. It was Red and Gold for the cruise I was on. Other themes you may get on your cruise include

  • Black and White night
  • Masquerade night
  • Roaring 20s

As I didn’t have a red or gold dress and didn’t want to buy one for just one night, I decided to accessories with red and gold instead. I took one of my black evening dresses and jazzed it up with a red scarf and a red and gold handbag and rose gold shoes. I think I got away with it.

cunard cruise evening wear

Other people on board were doing similar, the men too with red ties, bow ties and hankies which stood out against their dark suites. So, if you don’t have a dress or outfit that quite meets the theme there are ways you can still join in.

If dressing up is not your thing don’t worry, there is no obligation to join in. As mentioned above there are a number of venues on board where the dress code is casual whatever the night including the buffet, the Golden Lion and G32.

The Last Word

In my experience, the dress code for Cunard cruises was less intimidating than I thought it was going to be. It certainly wasn’t a steam of tuxedos and ball gowns. So, if the fear of feeling like you have to dress up all the time is putting you off taking a voyage with them, don’t let it.

During the day the dress code was comfortably relaxed with a focus on exploring the ship and port of call. While the smart attire for the evenings was just like going out for a special occasion at home.

Despite my initial reservations, the Gala Night did add a bit of fun to the cruise and by accessorising I could join in without a fully themed outfit. Even if Gala Nights are not your cup of tea there are plenty of casual venues so you can still have a nice evening onboard without having to adhere to the strict dress code.

So, whatever your style or comfort, you have plenty of options to enjoy a memorable voyage with Cunard.

Travel Maestro

The best style guide for what to wear on cunard.

April 19, 2019 by Travel Maestro Leave a Comment

what to wear on Cunard

Queen Mary 2, arguably the most famous ocean liner in the world, and her sister ships, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth, are equally elegant. With a sophisticated style and white-gloved crew, a journey on a Cunard Queen is a tasteful experience that calls for a correspondingly stylish cruise wardrobe.

From relaxing days to dazzling nights, here are suggestions for what to wear on a Cunard Queen.

Smart Evening Attire

what to wear on Cunard

Generally speaking, evening attire on Cunard is more formal than other cruise lines. In the restaurants, men should wear slacks and a sweater or collared shirt with a jacket and an optional tie. Women may enjoy a flowing skirt, cocktail dress or an elegant pantsuit. Travel Maestro tip: Ladies, this is your excuse to treat yourself to a unique piece of jewelry to compliment your outfit.

Even on the Queens, there are times that you may wish to dine and unwind in more relaxed clothing. In the following informal venues, jackets for men are not required and ladies will be comfortable in more casual slacks and a blouse: King Court, Lido Buffet, Golden Lion, Casino, Carinthia Lounge, Winter Garden, Garden Lounge, Yacht Club, and G32. Travel Maestro tip: Shorts, sleeveless t-shirts, swimwear, and sports attire should only be worn in the gym and deck spaces.

Gala Nights

What to wear on Cunard

On every seven-night voyage, Cunard includes two or three special Gala evenings when you are encouraged to pull out all the stops and strut your most glamorous look. Gala nights are an occasion to celebrate! Gentlemen most often don dinner jackets or tuxedos, although dark suits with a tie or bow tie are also acceptable. Elegant cufflinks complete the look. Travel Maestro tip: Don’t forget to shine your shoes to a high polish!

Ladies now is the time to wear that full-length gown, silk cocktail pants or chic evening dress that makes you feel like a red-carpet celebrity. Accessorize with a strappy pair of heels or an elegant flat shoe and a beaded evening bag to match. Travel Maestro tip: Indulge in a sophisticated up-do at the salon that afternoon.

Relaxed Daytime Onboard

what to wear on Cunard

During the day, feel free to relax and dress casually. Depending on the weather, men most often wear shorts, khakis or jeans with long or short sleeve shirts. Women might wear a range of outfits from cute dresses, shorts or capris to jeans and a sweater set. Deck shoes or sandals are perfect daytime footwear for everyone. Travel Maestro tip: Jeans are not appropriate after 6:00 pm. Generally, avoid anything too short, too low cut, or too tight and leave that favorite pair of distressed jeans or the torn t-shirt at home this trip.

When sailing on a Cunard Queen, you’ll enjoy impeccable and deferential service. You’ll feel like royalty yourself, so go ahead and look the part by dressing with fashionable panache.

Dressing Right for Cruise Formal Nights: From Casual to Chic

by Judith Eve | Mar 4, 2024 | Cruise Planning & Cruiser Lifestyle

cunard cruise evening wear

Deciding what to wear on cruise formal nights can be as thrilling as it is daunting. It's that special evening where the ship's atmosphere turns a notch fancier, and everyone gets a chance to strut their best outfits. But with so many options, how does one choose the perfect ensemble?

Fear not! Whether you're a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sea traveler, there's a way to navigate through the sea of formal wear without feeling lost. From elegant gowns to sharp tuxedos, understanding the unwritten rules of cruise attire will ensure you're decked out appropriately, blending in with the glamorous vibe of the night.

Understanding Cruise Formal Night Expectations

Cruise formal nights are a time-honored tradition, transforming the ship into a parade of elegance and style. For newcomers, understanding what to wear can feel like navigating uncharted waters. However, cruise lines often provide guests with guidelines that demystify dress codes, making it easier for everyone to blend in seamlessly with the sophisticated atmosphere.

At the core of it, formal nights on a cruise ship are not about strict rules but celebrating special occasions in style. Women typically shine in cocktail dresses, evening gowns, or sophisticated pant suits, while men don refined options like tuxedos, suits, or smart blazers with trousers. The key is to aim for attire that's a notch above the usual day wear, aligning with the ship's transformed ambiance.

Dress Code Variability

It's vital to note that dress codes can vary significantly between different cruise lines and even among ships within the same fleet. Luxury cruises might lean towards a more traditional definition of formal wear, expecting tuxedos and gowns as standard attire. In contrast, mainstream cruises could offer a more relaxed interpretation, where a nice dress or a shirt and trousers would suffice.

Understanding these nuances ensures that passengers can prepare appropriately without the fear of feeling underdressed or out of place. Pre-cruise communication from the cruise line, such as emails and brochures, often highlights these expectations, making it easier for guests to pack the perfect outfits.

Choosing the right attire for cruise formal nights adds an extra layer of excitement to the anticipation of the trip. With a clear grasp of what's expected, cruisers can focus on enjoying the elegant evenings, creating memorable moments without the worry of fashion faux pas.

Women's Attire Options for Cruise Formal Nights

cunard cruise evening wear

When it comes to cruise formal nights, women have a plethora of attire options to choose from. The essence of dressing up for these occasions is about blending elegance with comfort, ensuring that the attire not only looks sophisticated but also feels great to wear throughout the evening's events.

Cocktail Dresses and Evening Gowns

For most women, cocktail dresses and evening gowns are the go-to choices. Cocktail dresses are perfect for those who prefer something a little less formal but still want to adhere to the night's elegant theme. Typically, these dresses are knee-length or midi, offering a balance between formal and semi-formal.

On the other hand, evening gowns are ideal for making a statement. With longer hemlines that sweep the floor, these dresses come in various styles—from A-line to mermaid shapes—allowing for personal expression. The flexibility in choosing fabrics, such as silk or chiffon, adds an extra layer of sophistication.

Pantsuits and Jumpsuits

For those seeking an alternative to dresses, pantsuits and jumpsuits offer a chic and modern option. These pieces provide both style and comfort, making them a popular choice among women who prefer not to wear dresses. Tailored pantsuits in luxurious fabrics can elevate the look to fit the formal night's ambiance, while jumpsuits provide a unique silhouette that stands out in a sea of gowns.

Accessorizing

No outfit is complete without the right accessories. Statement jewelry , from pearl necklaces to diamond earrings, can accentuate the overall look, while elegant clutches serve as both a fashion statement and a practical item for carrying essentials. Choosing the right heels that offer comfort and style is crucial, as they can enhance the outfit's elegance while ensuring that the night can be enjoyed to the fullest.

By exploring these options, women can find the perfect attire that not only meets the cruise line's formal night expectations but also expresses their personal style. With the right outfit, they're set to enjoy an evening of sophistication and celebration on the high seas.

Men's Attire Options for Cruise Formal Nights

cunard cruise evening wear

When it comes to men's attire for cruise formal nights, the range of options allows for both traditional elegance and a touch of personal style. A key consideration is the cruising line's specific dress code, which can vary from relatively relaxed to strictly formal.

Tuxedos and Suits are the cornerstones of men's formalwear on these occasions. Opting for a classic black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt and a bow tie can never go wrong and exudes a timeless charm. Alternatively, a well-fitted dark suit paired with a smart dress shirt and a conservative tie offers a slightly less formal but equally respectable choice.

For those looking to inject a bit of their personality into their formal night ensemble, consider exploring:

  • Vest and Tie Combinations : Experimenting with different colors and patterns can add an individual touch while maintaining a polished look.
  • Shoes : While black dress shoes are a safe bet, switching to patent leather or polished loafers can elevate the overall aesthetic.

Accessories play a substantial role in completing the formal attire. Cufflinks, a pocket square, and a wristwatch are not just functional but also serve as tasteful embellishments that reflect attention to detail.

In terms of materials and colors, dark shades dominate formal evening wear. However, navy or dark grey suits can offer a subtle departure from the traditional black without detracting from the formality. Selecting high-quality fabrics such as wool, silk, or a blend can greatly enhance comfort, crucial for enjoying the night’s festivities to the fullest.

Lastly, the climate and location of the cruise should not be overlooked. For itineraries in warmer climates, opting for lighter materials and considering a breathable dress shirt can ensure comfort without compromising on style.

Accessorizing Tips to Elevate Your Formal Night Look

cunard cruise evening wear

Accessorizing for a formal night on a cruise is like adding the cherry on top of a delicious sundae. It's not just about the suit or dress; it's about the details that make an outfit truly shine. For men, selecting the right accessories can transform their look from simply nice to unequivocally elegant.

First and foremost, wristwatches are a must. A sleek, classic watch can serve as a statement piece, revealing a lot about personal style. Whether it's a vintage heirloom or a modern minimalist design, a watch adds a level of sophistication that few other accessories can.

Cufflinks also play a crucial role in a man's formal wear. They might be small, but their impact on an outfit's overall appeal is substantial. Opting for cufflinks that complement the shirt and suit color can tie the whole look together. For a more personalized touch, custom cufflinks or those that reflect personal hobbies or interests can serve as great conversation starters.

Don't forget about pocket squares . These little pieces of fabric can inject a pop of color or pattern to a suit, allowing for a bit of personal flair even in the most formal settings. The key is to ensure the pocket square complements the tie or shirt rather than matching it exactly, to avoid a look that's too coordinated.

Shoes, while not exactly an accessory, are also critical. Polished leather shoes are the gold standard for men's formal wear. The style—be it oxfords, derbies, or loafers—should match the level of formality of the event. Remember: the darker the shoe, the more formal it is.

By paying attention to these accessory tips, anyone can elevate their formal night look on a cruise. It's all about balancing tradition with personal style to create an ensemble that feels both appropriate and uniquely theirs.

Navigating Dress Codes for Different Cruise Lines

When embarking on a cruise, it's crucial to understand that dress codes can significantly vary from one line to another. This diversity not only caters to a broad audience but also dictates the formality of attire appropriate for evening events. For those looking to blend in and respect the onboard culture, paying close attention to these guidelines ensures a seamless experience.

Carnival and Royal Caribbean , for instance, opt for a more relaxed atmosphere during their formal nights. They suggest cocktail dresses for women and dress shirts with slacks for men. This approach encourages comfort while still maintaining a touch of elegance. Conversely, lines like Cunard and Holland America lean towards a traditional, more formal dress code. Here, evening gowns and tuxedos or dark suits are the norms, reflecting their penchant for classic cruise elegance.

For those who wish to dive deeper or have specific attire in mind, consulting the cruise line's website or reaching out to customer service prior to departure can provide clarity. Remember, while adhering to the dress code is part of the experience, cruise lines often accommodate guests who prefer not to participate in formal nights, offering alternative dining options where the dress code is more relaxed.

Mastering the art of dressing for a cruise's formal nights doesn't just add to the overall enjoyment; it also offers an opportunity to experiment with personal style within the framework set by the cruise line. Whether it’s embracing the casual elegance suggested by Carnival and Royal Caribbean or the timeless sophistication of Cunard and Holland America, there's room for every traveler to express themselves while respecting the established norms.

Key Takeaways

  • Cruise formal nights are special events where guests are encouraged to wear elegant attire, such as cocktail dresses and evening gowns for women, and tuxedos or suits for men, to match the ship's sophisticated atmosphere.
  • Dress codes for formal nights can vary significantly between different cruise lines, with luxury cruises typically requiring more traditional formal wear, while mainstream cruises may accept more relaxed outfits.
  • Women have a variety of options for cruise formal nights, including cocktail dresses, evening gowns, pantsuits, and jumpsuits, and should accessorize appropriately with statement jewelry, elegant clutches, and comfortable yet stylish heels.
  • Men's attire options range from classic tuxedos to well-fitted suits, and personalizing the outfit with accessories like cufflinks, pocket squares, and polished shoes can elevate the overall look.
  • It's important to understand the specific dress code of the cruise line ahead of time, as this will ensure guests feel confidently dressed and enjoy the formal nights without worry of being underdressed or out of place.
  • Accessorizing correctly, for both men and women, plays a crucial role in enhancing formal wear, making selections that reflect personal style while adhering to the formality of the event.

Mastering what to wear on cruise formal nights is all about balance. It's finding that sweet spot between personal style and the cruise line's expectations. Whether it's embracing the relaxed elegance suggested by Carnival and Royal Caribbean or stepping into the more traditional sophistication required by Cunard and Holland America, there's room for everyone to shine. Remember, it's not just about adhering to guidelines but also about seizing the opportunity to make unforgettable memories in your best attire. So before you set sail, a quick check with your cruise line can ensure you're perfectly poised for a night to remember.

Cruise Formal Night Explained: 10 Things to Know (What to Wear and More…)

Formal night on a cruise is a classic tradition, but for many passengers, it can also lead to lots of questions. Do I have to dress up? What can I wear? When are the formal nights?

Formal wear on a cruise ship

We’ve taken dozens of cruise and know that for those unfamiliar with formal night, it can feel a bit unnerving trying to figure out the ins and outs of dressing up. No one wants to head to dinner underdressed. At the same time, some people don’t want to dress up at all and prefer to know what other options they have.

Below, we’ve covered some of the most frequent questions about formal night on a cruise.

In This Article...

What Is a Cruise Formal Night?

Just as the name implies, formal night is the evening on the cruise when the dress code goes from the casual style that’s normal around the ship to more elegant. It’s a chance for passengers on the ship to put on their best and have an evening out that feels more special than just going to grab dinner in the dining room.

You’ll find people around the ship dressed up, having drinks, taking formal pictures, and enjoying dinner and a show. Think of it as a special event where many passengers have an elegant “date night” that’s more memorable than just another dinner on the ship.

Do I Have to Dress Up?

Absolutely not. Your cruise is your own. If you don’t want to dress up for the evening, then you certainly don’t have to do so. Many people choose to keep it casual. If you decide that shorts and a t-shirt are as formal as you want to get, you won’t be alone.

However, if you do decide to not dress up, it’s a good idea to dine outside of the main dining room or higher-end specialty restaurants. These are spots that request nicer dress during formal night.

Even if casual dress is allowed in the dining room during formal night, you might feel out of place with others wearing suits or evening gowns.

What Can I Wear to Formal Night? Do I Have to Wear a Tux or an Evening Gown?

Perhaps the biggest question around formal night on a cruise is what to wear. What’s acceptable is wide-ranging. No, you don’t have to go out and get a tuxedo or a formal evening gown unless you want to.

For instance, you can go all out and dress up in your best. And you will see some people around the cruise ship go this route. But you don’t have to wear a suit or tux to enjoy the evening.

Women can simply wear a cocktail dress or a nice blouse with pants. For men, it’s fine to wear a suit, or even a buttoned-down shirt and a pair of slacks if you don’t want to get too fancy. Nice jeans would also be ok, although we’d suggest something slightly more dressy.

That said, not everything goes. There are some clothing items to avoid if you plan to eat in the dining room on formal night. This includes shorts, tank-tops, t-shirts, and swimsuits, as well as flip-flops. If you’d wear it to the pool or the beach, you don’t want to wear it to formal night.

  • Ok to Wear for Formal Night (Women): Gowns, dresses, skirts, blouses with pants
  • Ok to Wear for Formal Night (Men): Tuxedoes, suits, button-down shirts, slacks, nice jeans
  • Avoid Wearing (Men and Women): Shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, flip-flops

Is The Dress Code Strictly Enforced?

Don’t worry, you aren’t likely to be denied entry to the dining room, even if you are dressed casually. It’s not like an exclusive nightclub that bars entry.

While the name might be “formal” or “elegant” night, you won’t be out of place as long as you dress nicer than a t-shirt and shorts. Remember, the cruise lines want you to enjoy yourself and not be worried about if you should be in a tuxedo.

For that reason, as long as you avoid wearing something very casual (e.g. flip flops, shorts, and a tank top), it’s likely to be no issue. Even so, we’d highly recommend dressing up somewhat if you plan on eating in a dining room or a nicer specialty restaurant. Not only will you feel more comfortable around others who are dressed up, but it also adds to the atmosphere of formal night for others.

Where Should I Eat If I Don’t Dress Up?

Formal dining room on a cruise ship

While the main dining room is the spot for formal eating during the evening, you won’t go hungry if you decide not to take part in dressing up. Every cruise ship offers a number of different places to eat, with many casual dining options for those who aren’t getting fancy for the evening.

For instance, instead of the main dining room you can head to the buffet or one of the 24-hour restaurants around the ship. The restaurant’s atmosphere will give you an idea of if it’s ok to eat there dressed casually or not. The fancy steakhouse? You want to go formal. The spot serving pizza? Shorts and a t-shirt are just fine.

Is Formal Night For Everywhere on the Ship?

While you’ll definitely see people dressed up all around the ship, the only place where you’ll find any sort of suggested or required dress code is in the dining room and/or specialty restaurants.

So if you are just hanging out around the ship — having a drink in a bar, playing in the casino, watching an evening show — then you are perfectly fine dressing down. You won’t be the only one. While many people participate in formal night, a considerable chunk of passengers don’t.

How Many Formal Nights Are There During the Cruise?

The number of formal nights varies based on the length of your cruise. The rule of thumb is that a week-long cruise will have two formal nights during the trip (i.e. Day 2 and Day 5). Shorter trips normally have one.

It may be that if you are on a very short cruise (e.g. three days), there might not even be one formal night. For instance, we’ve been on one short cruise with “Wear Your Best” (i.e. the nicest thing you packed) instead of formal night.

Does Everyone on the Ship Dress Up?

No. If you decide to not dress up, then you certainly won’t be out of place. Many people choose to dress casually and just eat somewhere else other than the main dining room or higher-end restaurants. Even so, formal nights are popular and when you walk around the ship in the evening on one of these nights, there is no mistaking that it’s dressier than normal.

How Will I Know When it Is Formal Night?

Notice of formal night

Nothing would stop you in your tracks like heading down to dinner in a pair of shorts and then realizing everyone else is dressed up! Fortunately, you’ll get plenty of notice when it is formal night.

The most obvious spot will be with your daily cruise planner delivered to your cabin each day or through the cruise line’s app. There will be some mention of the dinner attire. It may be referred to as “formal” or “cruise elegant” or some other name. They all mean the same thing: Time to get dressed up!

As well, there are almost always announcements from the cruise director throughout the day sharing what is going on during the day and evening. They will usually mention it when it is formal night, so keep an ear out for announcements.

In the worst case, even if you don’t see any notice at all, you will definitely not miss the fact that many people are dressed up when you head to dinner that evening. That should give you a little time to head back to the room and dress up if you want to join in.

Do I Need to Dress Up at Any Other Time Than Formal Night?

For the most part, the only time you’ll need to dress anything other than casual is if you participate in formal night. That said, there are some spots where some nicer clothes are a good idea even if that evening’s dress code is casual.

Specifically, if you plan to visit any of the higher-end specialty restaurants on the ship, such as the steakhouse, then there may be a dress code.

Even if there is not, dressing up to fit the style of the restaurant is smart. So while it’s ok to dress casually at a burger joint on the ship, you’ll want to dress a little nicer if you go to the formal Italian or seafood spot for dinner.

Bottom Line on Cruise Formal Nights

The formal nights on a cruise are a fun way to do things a little differently. If you’re not someone that gets dressed up often, don’t worry. The rules around what’s formal and what’s not are flexible. As long as you make some sort of effort to dress a little nice, you’ll be fine. And if you want to go all out, you won’t be alone!

If you’re someone who likes to keep things casual, then that’s no issue either. While we’d suggest not eating the main dining room or nicer specialty restaurants on that night, you can wear what you want around the ship.

What to wear on a Cunard cruise

Cunard Cruises is renowned for its formal atmosphere, leading some people to hesitate booking a cruise with them due to the perceived requirement of dressing formally every evening. However, this perception does not align with the reality. While evenings usually call for smart attire, the daytime atmosphere is quite relaxed.

cunard cruise evening wear

Cunard hosts formal evenings known as Gala nights, but the frequency of these events depends on the duration of the cruise. A typical 7-night cruise will contain 2 Gala nights each with a theme.

Day time - up to 6pm

During the day time, it's important to wear attire that provides comfort. You can opt for shorts and T-shirts, which are completely acceptable.

cunard cruise evening wear

Cunard states 'we highly recommend bringing swimwear, allowing you to take full advantage of the ship's pools, spa, and whirlpools. If you desire to use the gym, participate in an exercise class, or jog around the deck, remember to pack a pair of trainers and your usual workout clothes. Please note that swimwear is not permitted in indoor dining areas.

If you plan to have breakfast or lunch at the main restaurant in your stateroom, make sure to allocate time for a quick change. Alternatively, you can enjoy complimentary room service or have a drink delivered to your sun lounger while you relax and pass the time at sea.'

Evening - from 6pm

Gala evening

From 6.00pm, we encourage you to join in the sense of occasion with evening wear of dinner jacket, tuxedo, or dark suit with a regular tie or bow tie, or floor length dress, ball gown, cocktail dress, smart trouser suit, or formal separates.

All Gala evening themes are suggested themes only and you can still dress to the above guidance.

Black and White

For Black and White Gala Evenings, join in the monochrome palette with evening wear in full black or white, or patterns that combine both colours.

Roaring 20's

For Roaring 20s, a simple hint towards the theme is all that's required - a pocket square in an art deco print or a feathered slide in your hair - but if you'd like to bring a flapper dress, or braces and a trilby, you're sure to fit right in.

Red and Gold

Celebrate Cunard's rich heritage and identity with this special theme. From a red bow tie and sparkling gold accents through to red dinner jackets and red or gold gowns, your participation can be as big or as small as you like.

Smart Attire

Smart attire is a dress/collared shirt and trousers, skirt and a top, or a cocktail dress. Cunard suggests 'something along the same vein as you’d wear to a stylish restaurant or the theatre on a special occasion'.

What locations require the smart/gala dress code?

Locations requiring dress code

Britannia Club restaurant

The Verandah restaurant

Planning a cruise is so exciting! You might be wondering what to pack and what to wear on a cruise, during the day, evening and even on formal nights.

In this post, we’ll go over the basics of cruise line dress codes, as well as ideas for cruise wear for sea days, shore excursions and dinners on a cruise ship. I’ve also included cruise packing checklists to help you plan your cruise outfits.

What to Wear on a Cruise – Cruise Line Dress Codes (2021 & Beyond)

You may imagine, or even remember, the days of dressing to the nines on a cruise. The reality is, as times have changed, so have the cruise line dress codes and expectations.

My first cruise was on the Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas. Can you guess what we wore on formal night ?

My husband wore a black tuxedo and I wore a floor champagne evening gown with gorgeous beading at the top.

True story – My brother got married just a month before, and these were our bride’s maid and groomsmen outfits. I was so thankful to be able to have a place to wear them again!

Yet, we weren’t out of place and certainly at that time, most men were either in a dark suit or tuxedo. Most women wore long gowns or cocktail dresses on formal nights on a cruise.

While you definitely can still wear an evening gown and tuxedo, most popular cruise lines have relaxed their dress codes over the last few years. You can still expect to dress up on a cruise , but there are more opportunities to dress less formally if you prefer this as well.

Cruise Line Dress Codes – What to Expect

Each cruise line has it’s own dress code, however most have a version of casual , smart casual, and formal nights . The terminology that cruise lines are using reflect subtle changes to the dress code.

A casual dress code means includes casual pants or nice jeans for men (no holes), along with a nice shirt or polo. For ladies, capri pants, nice jeans and a cute top, or a sundress are all great. Most of the time, first and last evenings of your cruise, will be a casual dress suggestion.

Cruise tip: Most cruise lines don’t allow shorts in the dining room, so men, make sure you pack at least a pair or two of pants.

Smart Casual

Casual Cruise Wear evening

The smart casual dress code may also be called resort casual. A good guideline is to dress as you would at a nice restaurant at home. For men, this can include dress pants or khakis and a nice polo, short or long sleeve buttoned shirt. For ladies, a casual dress or pants with a pretty top is perfect.

Cruise tip:   The ship’s air conditioning may be quite cool in the dining room. Bring a light shawl, scarf or cardigan to cover your shoulders.

Formal Night

Dressing up for formal night  remains a tradition on a cruise vacation. These days, the formal night dress code may be called a gala evening , evening chic or dress your best , but it is a night where people tend to put on their best cruise attire . You’ll usually have 2 formal nights during a 7 day cruise.

How formal is formal night?

How formal is formal night on a cruise? This does depend on the cruise line. Tuxedos and dark suits are always appropriate. However, in most cases men can feel comfortable wearing a suit or dress pants and a dress shirt. For ladies, an evening gown, cocktail dress, pant suit or “little black dress” are great choices.

Keep in mind, that if you’re not feeling like dressing up, you can always eat in more casual clothes in the buffet and most casual restaurants on the ship.

Cruise ship outfit

Most cruise lines are quite casual during the day. In our experience, family oriented cruise lines are understandably much more “casual” than “higher-end” cruise lines. Cruise casual, resort wear or country club casual are all terms used by the cruise lines as a recommendation.

Shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, sundresses are all appropriate day wear for sea days . If you’re by the pool, it’s important to know that bathing suits are not permitted in the buffet or inside the cruise ship, so make sure to pack a cover up.

A casual dress for ladies, or a nice pair of pants and a stylish top is perfect. A good suggestion for men is a polo style shirt and pants or a pair of dark jeans.

Many first time cruisers are concerned about what to wear on formal nights on a cruise . It’s understandable, as this is quite different from a typical land vacation.

Generally, formal nights, sometimes called gala evenings or chic evenings , call for a tuxedo, suit or dress pants and a sports jacket for men. However, in our experience in recent years, this has relaxed quite a bit and tuxedos in particular are far less common. Suits and dress pants, with or without a jacket and tie, have become the norm.

For ladies, dressing in an evening gown, cocktail dress, or fancy outfit is perfect. I like to think of it as “wedding guest” attire.

Something to remember is to dress in what you enjoy. If you love the glamour of a long gown and tuxedo, go for it! If you prefer a little black dress, that works well too (plus you can wear it for years!)

Cruise tip: Check your cruise line dress code and judge accordingly, however you can also check your cruise line roll call or Facebook group to get a better idea of how people are really dressing on a cruise. In some cases, in practice, things are more or less in keeping with the dress code.

Cruise Line Dress Code Exceptions to Note

There are a couple of exceptions out of the mainstream cruise lines, that fall on either end of the cruise dress code spectrum.

Norwegian Cruise Line: NCL has a Freestyle concept and therefore does not impose a dress code in it’s dining rooms (however rules of decorum* are in place). You can feel comfortable either dressing up or dressing down. Think of it as “You do you” .

Cunard: On the other end of the pendulum is Cunard, which prides itself on tradition and a more formal dining experience. Therefore, jackets are required nightly by men and it is quite common to see tuxes and gowns on Formal nights. For more information on what to expect on a Cunard Cruise, you may enjoy this post (Queen Mary 2 Cunard Cruise) that details it.

Luxury Cruise Line Dress Codes

Luxury cruise line dress codes vary from one cruise line to the other, however it may surprise you to know that many luxury cruise lines don’t have formal nights, and instead are Country Club Casual.

Oceania and Azamara are elegant, but not formal, however Silversea does have formal nights. Check with your cruise line for details.

What Should Children Wear on a Cruise?

If you’re going on a family cruise , you might be wondering how dress codes apply to children. Generally, dress codes are quite relaxed for kids. Most cruise lines are fine with children wearing nice shorts in the dining room and restaurants for evening dinners.

That being said, it’s not uncommon for families with children to get dressed up on formal nights. It does make a great time to take family photos and have memories that will last a lifetime.

Teenagers can dress casually on a cruise most of the time, but should follow dress codes in the main dining room.

Cruise Outfit Tips

What to Wear on a Cruise During the Day

If you’re trying to pack light for a cruise , or even carry on only, here are a few tips:

  • Rather than bringing several dresses, you can repurpose the same one or two by changing accessories from one evening to the other.
  • Scarves, belts and jewelry can make an outfit feel new again. The reality is, no one cares or even notices if you wear the same outfit more than once.
  • You can also bring one pair of white pants or dark jeans, and bring a couple stylish tops to go with them.
  • A useful tip when planning your cruise outfits of the day is to wear your tighter dresses early on and save the looser styles for the last few days. It might sound like I’m joking, but I’m not 😉
  • I personally love shoes and have to restrain myself from bringing too many. However, you can do with 3-4 pairs of shoes on a cruise and be just fine.

Great advice. I’m cruising to Aruba on Friday, so I’m right in the midst of packing our suitcases right now. The formal nights completely annoy me. I feel like it’s just an income opportunity for the cruise line. I do like to dress up, but trying to fit everything into one big suitcase and a carry-on is tough. I am bringing those vacuum bags to try and squeeze in everything for our ship days, our excursions, and our dress-up dinners. It’s definitely going to take some squeezing, but I am kind of glad they’ve toned down the formal nights. I’m just bringing a maxi-skirt with a nice top and we’ll probably opt-out of the second one.

I’m so excited for you! Love Aruba! You’re right about the packing. I’m really trying to bring less these days (but I’m an over packer).I also wear items on “formal nights” that are dressy but comfortable, and ideally pack well.

Have a great cruise!

That’s a good idea to bring some more formal clothes. I would think that would be nice to have if you are on a fancier trip. I’ll have to make sure to pack a suit and that my wife packs a nice dress if we go on a cruise.

If you enjoy dressing up a couple of nights, you’ll adore formal or chic nights on a cruise. It definitely feels elegant.

Do check the cruise line dress code before you book, just to make sure that you choose a cruise ship where you’ll have this experience.

I’m a little bit like you. I love that it’s just a little less formal than years ago, but dressing up makes the evenings special. Great idea to pack with vacuum packed bags!

I have also found that gowns are downright odd on Princess formal nights now. There are always a few of us that wear them, but to-the-floor is gawked at. Not that I mind. And, Club Class Dining people seem to dress up more than others. On our Feb 2020 Hawaii cruise there were several white tie dinner jackets. On the opposite end, if you DON’T dress on formal nights, you are gawked at and should stay out of the main dining rooms.

Thanks for sharing your experience and what things have really been like onboard. When we’ve done holiday sailings we have found people dressed a little more (more suits and even tuxes) and other sailings less. Interesting about Club Class though.

Thanks again for your comments,

I dont see the tuxedo. You will have to point it out to me?

Each cruise has it’s own dress code, and tuxedos are definitely welcome. Some cruise lines are quite traditional and a tuxedo will be worn by many men (ie. Cunard). Other cruise lines, despite listing tuxedos among their dress suggestions, tend to have less passengers who are actually wearing them. What cruise line do you usually use?

So glad I found your YouTube channel, then website. Although I’ve been on a number of cruises (Disney, Carnival & RC), I regularly get great tips and ideas from you. Our next cruise is on RC NEXT week, February 27, 10 day western Caribbean. Can. Not. Wait!! Thus will be the third family reunion style cruise we have done with my wife’s family – this time sans kids – who are all now 18+. With this in mind, we chose Radiance of the Seas for the simple pleasure of cruising. Peace!

Very exciting!! Enjoy your cruise!

Thank you so much! I’ve been stressing about what type of clothes to pack for our first cruise as a family (it’s a surprise 40th for my husband). Thanks to your post, I feel much more relieved and have a better idea of what we need. Again, THANK YOU!

So exciting! Enjoy!

What to Wear on a Cruise: Daytime, Formal Nights & More

W hen it comes to cruising in style, packing the right attire for every occasion is essential. Including a few key versatile items on your cruise packing list will prevent your suitcase (and the limited closet space in your stateroom) from becoming overcrowded – and keep you looking appropriate for all events.

Although most cruise lines outline their suggested dress codes in the FAQ sections of their websites, be sure to also review the specifics of your cruise itinerary. Not only will the destination and weather factor into what you should wear on your cruise, but you'll also want to know if formal nights require black-tie attire, themed dress parties need costumes or shore excursions necessitate unique clothing or footwear.

Whether you'll be lounging by the pool or attending a glamorous dinner, our list of must-have items and suggestions from industry experts will help you navigate dressing for your next cruise vacation.

For relaxing sea days, prioritize comfort above all else. Depending on your planned activities, any of the following casual options are considered acceptable attire:

  • Skirts or skorts
  • T-shirts and tank tops
  • Breezy lounge pants
  • Bathing suits
  • Cover-ups
  • Sun hats or baseball caps

Travel writer Jill Schildhouse always packs her VOTEPRETTY sundress . "This is my go-to cruise workhorse," says Schildhouse. "It's light and breezy, and the pockets come in very handy." She adds that the sundress can be worn to casual dinners on the ship or on shore excursions, and it can even double as a swimsuit cover-up. "I've taken it all over the world and it always arrives wrinkle-free," she says. Schildhouse has received many compliments on this classic sundress, which is available in multiple colors.

Sheri Griffiths, host of YouTube series CruiseTipsTV , suggests wearing comfortable, broken-in shoes on a cruise. She recommends avoiding brand-new footwear during your voyage to prevent blisters and daily discomfort. A basic sneaker can be worn for just about any cruise itinerary, from Alaska to the Caribbean . Griffiths says, "We love these Adidas Stan Smiths because they wear in quickly and have a timeless style."

In the evening, most cruise ships adopt a dress code in their main dining rooms and specialty restaurants that incorporate smart-casual or resort-wear attire. The following clothing choices will suffice:

  • Maxi dresses
  • Elegant tops
  • Long- or short-sleeved button-down shirts
  • Polo shirts
  • Blazers and ties (typically optional, unless otherwise stated)
  • Shawls or wraps
  • Closed-toe dress shoes
  • Sandals or heels

Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic, shares her best advice for cruise footwear. "I always pack my Rothy's shoes for any cruise because they're infinitely comfortable, work as both a formal and [an] informal shoe and can be tossed in the laundry if they get dirty." She notes that she has several pairs, but two of her go-to styles are The Point and The Ballet Flat . McDaniel adds that the shoes work in every occasion, from strolling along the ship decks to perusing cobblestone streets on shore. "I bought both [pairs] 5 years ago, and they look as new today as they did out of the box despite literally hundreds of hours of wear," she says.

Jason Leppert, founder of YouTube channel Popular Cruising , always packs his signature Hawaiian shirts to wear day or night. He says, "I love the RSVLTS collection because they can play casually with shorts or more dressy with slacks for dinner."

Formal Nights

While more casual these days, cruise formal nights still call for a bit more sophistication and style. Appropriate options include:

  • Cocktail dresses
  • Evening gowns
  • Dress shoes

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer for The Points Guy, always packs a gown or a fancy cocktail dress for a formal night. "I work from home and don't have a reason to dress up otherwise, so I look forward to it." Still, Kosciolek is a firm believer that travelers should wear what is most comfortable for them while on vacation. She adds, "My dinner won't taste any better or worse based on what others are wearing."

Mikkel Woodruff, editor of cruise site Sometimes Sailing , always brings her Omega Sailing Bracelet on cruises. She says, "I like to bring jewelry that reminds me of the ocean and being on the sea." Woodruff appreciates the bracelet's versatility, noting how easily it can go from shore excursions to formal evenings to everyday activities.

Shore Excursions

When heading off the ship for a shore excursion, opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear to make the most of your adventures on land. Consider packing the following items:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Mesh water shoes
  • T-shirts or tank tops
  • A waterproof jacket

Freelance travel writer David Swanson shares his favorite versatile cruise shoes. He discovered a comfortable pair of Danner multitasking shoes that worked for dinners, casual events and multiple days of cycling on a recent European cruise. "I didn't think I'd find something to do dual duty, but I love this comfy pair from Danner, an outdoor brand [that is] new to me but has been around since 1932," says Swanson.

Paul Thornton, host of The Joy of Cruising Podcast , always packs his Coofandy linen shirts and shorts for hot Caribbean days and breezy cruise ship evenings. "I love Coofandy because they enable this senior to look 'youthful' on the beach and excursions," says Thornton. He adds that the brand is also his go-to retailer for White Party-themed nights on board.

Cruise Line Dress Codes

Dress codes can vary significantly from one cruise company to the next, so it's a good idea to check with your specific line before filling up your suitcase. Once you're on board, be sure to read the daily program for reminders about the dress codes required at the events and dining venues during your voyage.

Azamara Dress Code

  • Daytime: Fairly casual attire is suitable throughout Azamara 's ships during the day. However, baseball caps, distressed denim, tank tops and bathing suits cannot be worn at Discoveries, Aqualina and Prime C restaurants (and shoes are required).
  • Evening: At night, women typically wear casual dresses, skirts, pants, capris, blouses and knit tops, while men are welcome to wear collared golf and polo shirts, shorts and pants. Sport coats are optional. Note: There are no official formal nights on Azamara's voyages.
  • Themed Nights: Be sure to pack an all-white outfit for Azamara's signature White Night dinner and deck party.

Carnival Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Pack casual, comfortable attire to sail with Carnival Cruise Line , such as T-shirts, polo shirts or relaxed tops paired with shorts, capris, khakis or jeans. Athletic wear paired with a lightweight sweater or jacket are suitable for those looking to stay active.

Evening: After 5:30 p.m., attire ranges from "cruise casual" to "cruise elegant."

  • "Cruise casual" attire for men typically suggests longer dress shorts, pants or jeans and a collared polo shirt. Women usually wear sundresses, blouses, skirts, dress shorts and capri pants.
  • "Cruise elegant" typically translates to dress slacks, dress shirts and sports coats (suggested) for men, with some wearing suits, ties or tuxedos. Women choose dresses (party or cocktail), pantsuits and elegant skirts with blouses, while some may wear evening gowns. Kids should follow the adult dress code, opting for school dance- or party-appropriate attire. Note: Jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, shorts, T-shirts, sportswear, exercise clothes, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suits are not permitted. The number of "cruise elegant" evenings varies based on the length of the cruise.

Themed Nights:

  • Carnival Journeys cruises feature a "Throwback Sea Day," where guests can relive the '80s by day (outfits included) and dress up for a themed Captain's Cocktail Party by night.
  • Cruises between early December and Christmas Day feature an "Ugly Sweater Contest."
  • Costumes are suggested for Halloween cruises between the end of September and October. However, when choosing a costume, keep in mind that full masks are prohibited (masks covering half of the face are allowed).

Celebrity Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, smart casual resort wear is suitable throughout Celebrity Cruises ' ships. (Think: sundresses, shorts, polos and button-down shirts paired with sandals, low heels and loafers.) Bathing suits with cover-ups, T-shirts, tank tops, hats and sunglasses are only appropriate poolside. Cruisers should avoid wearing these items in the dining areas.
  • Evening: Most evenings, guests are expected to wear comfortable yet tasteful attire. This entails dresses, skirts, long pants or jeans, stylish tops and button-down shirts. Shorts and flip-flops do not meet the evening dress code. Depending on your voyage, there will be one or two formal nights that require "evening chic" wear. Passengers can dress to impress in formal gowns, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, dressy jeans or blazers.

Costa Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, Costa Cruises ' passengers may wear casual clothing like T-shirts, shorts and sundresses. Beach clothing and flip-flops are not permitted in ship restaurants. Depending on the itinerary, some shore excursions may have specific dress codes.
  • Evening: Most nights require resort attire; however, Costa hosts one or two Elegant Evenings per cruise, when men may wear dark suits or tuxedos and women can wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses.
  • Themed Nights: Costa recommends that guests pack white clothing for its White Night events and white, red and green clothing and accessories for its Italy-themed evenings.

Cunard Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Shorts, T-shirts and sundresses are appropriate daytime wardrobe options on sailings with Cunard Line . Swimwear is acceptable by the pool but should not be worn in indoor dining areas.
  • Evening: In the evenings, passengers are asked to wear smart attire, which includes dress shirts and trousers for men, and cocktail dresses or sophisticated tops and skirts for women – similar to what you'd choose for dinner at a trendy restaurant or a special occasion. Voyages lasting seven nights host at least two Gala Evenings, during which guests are requested to adhere to a more formal dress code.
  • Themed Nights: Gala Evenings employ themes ranging from specific colors (such as black and white or red and gold outfits) to the roaring '20s to masquerade balls.

Disney Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: On Disney Cruise Line sailings, cruise casual attire is acceptable during the day; outfit options include sundresses and shorts and tees. Swimwear and tank tops are not permitted in dining venues.
  • Evening: After the sun sets, polished attire like collared shirts and jeans without rips are acceptable. Bathing suits, tees, tank tops and sports attire are not allowed. Adult-exclusive dining venues on Disney ships call for elegance; formal or semiformal wear is recommended.
  • Themed Nights: On three- and four-night sailings, there is typically a pirate-themed deck party and one optional dress-up night for guests of all ages. Sailings lasting seven nights or longer add one formal and one semiformal night, when women may wear a formal dress or pantsuit and men can opt for a suit or dress pants with a jacket.

Holland America Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: Plan on wearing casual attire aboard Holland America Line 's ships during the day. When indoors, guests must wear shirts, cover-ups and footwear.
  • Evening: On most nights, smart casual clothing is acceptable. However, in table service restaurants, shorts, bathing suits, distressed jeans and tank tops are prohibited. Grand Voyages cruises host formal nights, when suits and dresses are appropriate.
  • Themed Nights: Once per cruise, Holland America hosts an Orange Party in celebration of King's Day. Pack your favorite orange clothing and accessories for this event, which honors the cruise line's Dutch heritage.

MSC Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: Guests of MSC Cruises dress fairly casual during the day in T-shirts and shorts.
  • Evening: Collared shirts, dresses and tailored pants are expected at night in the main dining rooms, specialty restaurants and entertainment venues. There is one optional Gala Night, when varying levels of elegance are acceptable. Guests should wear what makes them feel comfortable, ranging from tuxedos or ball gowns to dressy jeans and polo shirts.
  • Themed Nights: MSC hosts a White Night Party (where guests wear all white) and a Sunshine Party, where guests don cheerful colors.

Norwegian Cruise Line Dress Code

  • Daytime: During the day, plan to wear cruise casual attire like summer dresses, jeans, khakis, shorts and casual shirts on Norwegian Cruise Line voyages. At the buffet and outdoor restaurants, swimwear can be worn with a cover-up and footwear. In dining rooms and specialty restaurants, Norwegian does not permit tank tops for men, jeans with rips or tears, flip-flops, baseball caps or visors.
  • Evening: In Norwegian's upscale specialty restaurants, smart casual attire is the norm. Women can wear slacks, jeans, dresses, skirts and tops, while men should opt for jeans or slacks, a collared shirt and closed-toed shoes. Children ages 12 and younger may wear shorts in all restaurants. On each cruise, there is one particular "Dress-Up or Not Night," when guests can wear fancier clothing (if they choose).
  • Themed Nights: Pack an all-white outfit for the White Hot Party and formal attire for Norwegian's Night Out.

Princess Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: In Princess Cruises ' restaurants and public spaces, casual resort wear is required. Shoes must be worn in the dining areas, and pool or beach attire, ball caps and frayed jeans are prohibited in restaurants.
  • Evening: On most nights, smart casual attire is acceptable in restaurants. However, on formal evenings, women may wear evening gowns, cocktail dresses or elegant pantsuits; while men may opt for tuxedos, dark suits or dinner jackets with slacks. The number of formal nights per cruise depends on the length of the sailing.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: Elevated resort wear, including jeans, shorts, T-shirts and tennis shoes, is appropriate before 6 p.m. on Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' ships.
  • Evening: At night, elegant casual attire is recommended. Women typically dresses, pantsuits or slacks paired with blouses or sweaters; a collared shirt and dress pants for men is the norm, with the option for sport jackets and ties. On cruises lasting 16 nights or longer, there are two evenings when guests can choose to wear formal or semiformal attire. Wardrobe choices include dark suits and cocktail dresses or tuxedos and gowns. Note: On the last night of every voyage, the dinner dress code is "relaxed casual" to accommodate guests packing for early morning flights.

Royal Caribbean International Dress Code

  • Daytime: A relaxed, casual style is acceptable during the day on cruises with Royal Caribbean International . However, swimwear should be limited to the pool deck.
  • Evening: On most nights, guests wear smart casual attire, which includes collared or button-up shirts, dresses, skirts, blouses and pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are encouraged but not required. On formal evenings and for the Chef's Table dining experience, cruisers are expected to wear black-tie attire, which includes tuxedos, suits with ties, cocktail dresses and evening gowns. The number of formal nights per cruise depends on the length of the sailing.
  • Themed Nights: Offered on cruises lasting four nights or longer, themed nights may include toga parties, masquerade balls, decade themes and black and white nights.

Silversea Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: Casual attire akin to what you'd wear at a five-star resort is suitable during the day aboard Silversea Cruises ' ships.
  • Evening: Evening attire is categorized into three groups: casual, informal and formal. On casual evenings, women wear pants, blouses, skirts, and casual dresses, while men wear open-neck shirts and slacks. On informal evenings, ladies often choose dresses or pantsuits, and gentlemen typically wear jackets (ties are optional). Formal night is always optional; if you choose to participate, outfits may include cocktail dresses, gowns, tuxedos and suits. The number of formal nights per cruise varies by voyage length.

Elegant jeans are allowed in all dining venues except The Restaurant. On formal evenings in The Restaurant, men may wear tuxedos, suits or slacks and jackets, while women can opt for evening gowns and cocktail dresses.

Viking Ocean Cruises Dress Code

  • Daytime: On Viking Ocean Cruises ' ships, casual daytime clothing such as shorts, pants, jeans and comfortable walking shoes are acceptable. Athletic wear including exercise clothing, swimsuits and cover-ups may only be worn in the fitness center, pool zones and sports deck.
  • Evening: While there are no dedicated formal nights, the dress code after 6 p.m. calls for elegant casual attire for all dining venues, lounges, bars and theaters. Jeans are not permitted (with the exception of the World Cafe, where the dress code remains casual in the evenings). For women, wardrobe options include dresses, jumpsuits, skirts or slacks paired with elegant tops. Jackets and ties are optional for men, but trousers and collared shirts should be worn in the evenings.

Virgin Voyages Dress Code

  • Day or night, cruisers on Virgin Voyages ' ships are encouraged to wear attire that expresses their personal style. Just note: In restaurants, bathing suits are not permitted, and shoes are necessary. There are no formal nights; guests can dress up or down, depending on what makes them feel their best.
  • Themed Nights: Pack something scarlet red for the Scarlet Night Party, which occurs once per voyage.

Formal /evening wear for an elderly lady

Cool Cruiser

My 82 year old Mum & I are thinking of booking a cruise on QE to see the Norwegian fjords later this year. My problem is, my mother doesn't really 'do' evening dress. We've been on Fred Olsen & P&O cruises previously. On the FO she didn't look out of place at all, as the dress code was pretty casual. On P&O, on the formal nights, whilst I wore evening wear, she just wore a pretty dress. I tried to find her a more 'sparkly' outfit before the P&O cruise, but she's a tiny little old lady with slight osteoporosis, so nothing she tried on looked 'right'. We never did find an evening dress, so she just wore her best dress. On P&O, whilst she did look slightly underdressed, no one was worried, but it sounds like Cunard may be a different matter. If I'm wearing an evening gown, & Mum isn't a) will we be allowed in the restaurant/theatre etc & b) will she look completely out of place? Any ideas for where we could find her an evening outfit (she doesn't wear trousers)?

A smart black or navy dress with some nice jewellery or perhaps a silky wrap should be fine. It doesn't have to be long.

Tangoqueen

I shouldn't worry about your mum at all......so long as she's not wearing her shorts or joggers! There are plenty of ladies in Sunday best dresses. ladies who are a little frail would find it quite dangerous to be wearing a long dress as it can be quite hard walking up and down any steps without standing on your dress.

A nice dress or skirt and blouse with perhaps a cardigan with a little bit of sparkle or nice brooch would be perfect. And anyone who says different hasn't been on many Cunard cruises.

My mums 83 in April and my sister and I have this week booked a P&O cruise for the three of us in May. Mum likes some of the dresses at a shop called Roman and she has also found some lovely dresses in Debenhams

Thanks Tangoqueen, you have reassured me! I will suggest 'Roman' & Debenhams too, you never know, she might find something she likes, but if not, I won't worry. You Mum looks fantastic for her age by the way!

I would definitely look at Roman - they have some lovely sparkly cardigans that would turn anything in to a formal night code! My mum is 79 and doesn't wear classic formal now but looks great in a nice dress with a wrap or glittery top. There are some lovely long skirts around too, which fit the bill. Have a lovely time.

Thanks NickiP, you're mum will have a great time and I'm sure she will look great too.......I think of these holidays as "making special memories", it's great to have some quality time together knowing she's safe and cared for and forgetting about all the drs appointments, tests and hospital visits. The photo was around her 80th birthday but she still looks great now x

I can assure you that no one will be policing what your 82 year old mother will be wearing, despite what some on here may say.
I absolutely agree!!

MarkieMarkNYC

She shan't be leaving her room without proper attire. :p

I'm absolutely sure she will. I have never seen anyone refused entry despite some very inappropriately dressed passengers. I would love to see dress code enforced but quite frankly in reality it is not happening.

Enjoy your holiday - a blazer will be totally accepted.

1 will be wearing a black pant suit with jewelry & makeup/hair. My go to outfit on all cruises. Change jewelry & top if you wish. Simple, easy to pack & always works.

Your mum looked amazing at 80!

Sparkly cardigans in a colour to go with her favourite dresses. Some glittery jewellery works as well, no need to spend a fortune, lots of pretty stuff in the high street chains including Marks and Spencer.

And you have some ideas for Mothers Day gifts for her!

Big Mac's ladies were excellent, I think your mother at 82 could easily attend a formal night with a slightly more casual look just to get a comfy outfit. I sailed last week on P&O and at breakfast an elderly lady asked me to guess her age, I went for 80 as it seemed realistic, she said 98. That's elderly.

Regards John

Thanks for this. I'm much younger, but am bringing a 2 year old and 6 year old so I was hoping a nice wrap dress would be acceptable on our Cunard Norwegian cruise. It's not really an evening dress, but it is black and I can't wear anything that can't be washed easily or isn't good for chasing kids in.

I believe 82 year old people have earned some things in life, and one of those things is right to wear whatever you want !

You can never go wrong with a little black dress! Though I usually do the black trousers and top (cover a multitude of sins there). Also easy for chasing kids although those years are well behind me. I have a few 'evening' wraps that I drape ever so fetchingly across my shoulders and if you had a silver or gold one that would lift the outfit again.

I agree with you, re young and older people, the problem is once we lose the dress code, that is it, very little chance of going back, maybe younger people should think what they would to be dress like in their senior years?

Maybe! I did partake in the dress code on my last Cunard cruise, it made a nice change.

Still not giving up my jeans for good though...
