7 Tips for a Day Trip to Champagne from Paris

day trip paris to champagne

Champagne is synonymous with France. After all, the bubbly glasses of goodness originated in northern France and only sparkling wine from that region can bear the prestigious title of “Champagne.” Visiting the home of one of the most famous drinks in the world was at the top of my life long list of dreams, so on our last day in Paris—and the final day of our trip to Spain and France — we took a day trip to Champagne from Paris.

Tasting a glass of Veuve Clicquot Champagne in Reims, France.

I had visions of sipping fizzy Champagne all day and wandering around the historical region without a care in the world, but the reality was much different. We didn’t realize the region was divided into two cities (and arrived in one when we had a tour scheduled in another), among other bumps in the road. So learn from our mistakes!

Glasses of Moët & Chandon Champagne at Moët & Chandon Champagne House in Epernay, France.

1. The Champagne region is about an hour’s train ride from Paris.

The easiest way to Champagne from Paris is to take the high speed TGV train. The region’s two major centers are Reims and Épernay (more on that below) and the train stops in Reims (45 minutes away, about 15€) or Épernay (75 minutes, about 22€). Trains run back and forth all day and tickets can be purchased at the station before boarding or in advance online.

2. Champagne is made up of 5 small areas, but stick to Reims and/or Épernay.

All five regions of Champagne produce sparkling wine, but the towns of Reims and Épernay are the centers of the area. A note of caution: Reims and Épernay are not that close together! We made the mistake of taking a cab from Reims to Epernay and it cost us around 100€!

If you want to see both regions, jump back on the train. It’s an inexpensive 9€ and is much quicker (about a half hour on the TGV high speed train) than taking a cab or the bus.

A row of Veuve Clicquot Champagne glasses at Veuve Clicquot in Champagne, France.

3. Épernay is like Sonoma while Reims is like Napa.

After our 100€ cab ride to Épernay to tour the Moët & Chandon caves, we made the best of being in the other city and visited a smaller Champagne House (what the wineries are called), called Georges Cartier . Georges Cartier is a smaller winery that doesn’t export to the United States so we’d never get to taste it stateside. We got one-on-one attention and a private tasting of their entire line of Champagnes.

We wandered around Épernay for the rest of the morning (yes, our Moët & Chandon tour was at 9:45 a.m.) and enjoyed the peaceful, small town. It felt a lot like Sonoma. When we finally explored the much larger, more touristy Reims (where we toured Veuve Clicquot ), it reminded both of us of the more touristy Napa. That’s not good or bad, just worth mentioning for those who have been to California’s wine region and have a strong preference for one side over the other.  But…

The caves aging thousands of bottles of Moët & Chandon Champagne in Reims, France.

4. Wine tasting in Champagne isn’t like it is in California.

If you’ve been wine tasting in California, you know that wineries welcome visitors to drink, relax and oftentimes eat. In Champagne, most wineries obviously want visitors and they want you to try their wines, but none of the houses we visited offered any food (which can become a problem after drinking Champagne all day!) and often shuffled us to move on after our tours. In Napa and Sonoma, I felt like I could spend all day relaxing at the wineries but in Champagne I felt like they wanted me to buy a bottle and move on.

Another major difference: Champagne is aged in underground caves so most of the tours take visitors underground to natural vaults created by chalk and/or limestone quarries, some dug out during the Roman times. It’s incredibly impressive. But keep that in mind when deciding your attire because the caves can get chilly!

5. Research what Champagne Houses you want to visit beforehand.

There are a ton of Champagne Houses in the region, so have an idea which ones you want to visit before you go.  This will help decide if to go Reims, Épernay or both. Épernay is home to Mercier, Moët & Chandon (open since 1743!) who also owns Dom Pérignon; while Reims hosts Veuve Clicquot (1772), Mumm (1827) and Tattinger (1734). Wikipedia has a helpful list of houses here or Reims Tourism lists houses . Reservations can be made at most Champagne houses online beforehand.

Bonus tip: With good food comes good wine. In the case of Champagne, it’s the opposite: with good wine, comes good food.  Champagne is home to a dozen Michelin-rated restaurants, so make reservations for those before heading there, too.

6. The region has an incredible past so don’t forget to indulge in history, too.

Because of its geographical position between many different countries, the region has seen a lot of history, particularly in the form of war. The Romans defeated the Huns in Champagne in 451 A.D., many battles of the Hundred Years’ War took place there, and it was bombed repeatedly during both World Wars. In fact, the caves of Veuve Clicquot were once used as a hospital during World War I and the remnants of a hospital cross are still visible on the cave walls. And Reims is actually the place where Eisenhower and the Allies received the German surrender on May 7, 1945.

Reims is also home to the Notre Dame de Rems Cathedral, where the coronation of every French king has taken place, and the Abbey of Saint Remi, the largest Romanesque pilgrimage church in northern France.

7.  Consider taking a guided tour.

We managed to visit the Champagne region on our own, doing a lot of research beforehand. We pulled it off, but not without some hiccups (like the 100€ cab ride). At the end of the day when we were exhausted from getting lost, we wished we would have signed up with a guided tour.

There are plenty online and I’m sure they are all much easier and less stressful than doing it on your own! This Champagne tour and this day trip are the closest to what we did, visiting both Reims and Épernay. Or this one is just Reims while this tour is just Épernay (including Moët & Chandon).

Champagne is such a contrast from Paris.  It’s definitely worth dedicating a day to explore the countryside and taste France’s most famous drink.  While parts of our day trip to Champagne was hectic, it was a sparkling end to an amazing trip through Spain and France .

Can you please post the link for the correct train from Paris? I tried to click it and it didn’t work. Thanks!

Hi Kelli- Thank you for posting this. Very helpful! Question: You mentioned a lot of walking. Is it customary to dress up at the Champagne Houses like it is in Napa/Sonoma? What would you recommend wearing?

' src=

Hi Brooke – thanks for reading and mentioning the broken link. It’s been fixed! As for wardrobe, that’s a tough call. I don’t think you need to dress up, but nothing too casual or sloppy. Wear shoes you can walk on cobblestone and stone (possibly damp) stairs, and remember the caves might be a little chilly.

Cheers, Kelli

Hi Kelli! My husband and I are planning to take the train from Paris to Reims. We’re planning to take taxis from the train station, to champagne houses. From champagne house to champagne house do you think it will be difficult to hail a taxi? Or are there taxis located at each champagne house?

Hi Jordan – thanks for reading. I can’t say for certain. When I was there, taxis were not readily available. It may be best to reach out to the Champagne houses to ask them if they have taxi stands nearby or can call a taxi for you.

' src=

Hi Kelli, thanks for sharing your experience. To get from the Champagne Houses, was it easy to hail a taxi or transportation? I’m concerned about transformation if my family does a DIY day trip from Paris, versus a tour.

I recommend a guided tour. The taxi from Paris was over 100€. The train was much cheaper, but navigating the bus and public transit once you’re in the Champagne region might be tricky.

' src=

Hi there! I found this so helpful but I had a question. I’m going on my honeymoon in September and wanted to visit multiple places and buy extra bottles at each. Is it possible to bring a wine luggage bag from place to place during tours? Thanks!

' src=

Hi Kelli! I enjoyed reading this blog. I’m flying to Paris this June and I hope to take a day trip to the Champagne Region. You just inspired me to go to Epernay to visit the Moet and Chandon Cellars. One small question though, if I took the train to Epernay, what would be the best way to commute to Moet and Chandon? And anywhere there?

Hi Patricia,

Thanks for reading my blog. I think you’d be fine to take a cab from the train station to Moet & Chandon or it might even be possible to walk. I don’t remember exactly, so I don’t want to tell you for certain, but I think we walked there from the train. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help! Have fun and let me know how it goes! Cheers, Kelli

' src=

Very helpful post. I’ll be there end of June and can’t decide if we should take the train and cabs to the Champagne Houses or take a tour. I really want to go to both Moet and Veuve but I’m having trouble finding a tour that goes to both so may have to train it and hope for the best! Did you find the trains easy to navigate? If you know of any tours that do both, please let me know!

Hi Liz, Thanks for reading! The trains were pretty easy to navigate, but I’d recommend giving yourself some extra time in case you can’t find the platform or anything like that. I don’t know of any tours that do both. If you find any, please let me know! Thank you and have fun! – Kelli

' src=

Thanks Kelli, Enjoyed your blog, I would like to do a tour of the trip but, it is expensive, so we are going to do it the hard way, on our own. We will be in Paris in a few weeks, and staying in the 4th arrondissment, what are other places worth exploring outside of paris apart from the usual tourist places in Paris. Appreciate your tips. Thanking you

Thank you! Other than Champagne, we went to the Palace of Versailles, a little outside of Paris. It was extremely touristy and very crowded, so it wasn’t my favorite place but I’m glad I experienced it. Other than that, I didn’t venture too far from Paris, although I wish I had. Sorry I can’t be of more help! If you discover somewhere interesting, I’d love to hear about it! Cheers and safe travels! – Kelli

' src=

Excellent, thanks for the tips and comparisons to Napa/Sonoma. This helps a lot for an upcoming trip!

' src=

Thanks for all the tips! Looking forward to going NEXT MONTH and doing all my research now XO

' src=

Hi, Loved this post, it has been super helpful for planning my trip to Reims/Epernay. I was wondering how much it cost to tour the different champagne houses? Also do you have any restaurant recommendations for lunch while there?

Thanks for reading! The tours vary by location, but they aren’t very expensive. For example, Moet & Chandon was around 30€. (Here’s how to request a tour and more info: http://us.moet.com/Visit-us/Visit-our-cellars ). As for eating, I know there are a lot of great restaurants in the region (including Michelin-rated places) but I didn’t eat anywhere worth noting so I personally can’t recommend any. Sorry! Enjoy France!!

' src=

Hi Kelly, Thanks for the great post! If we took the train to Reims, are the tasting houses along the streets like in Napa? We won’t have a lot of time to take cabs out to vineyards if they are far from the train station. Is there enough to do walking around town? Or do you reccomend traveling out of town? Trying to picture what it’s like. Thanks so much! Always enjoy reading your posts:) -Bonnie

Hi Bonnie, We walked around in Reims and found stuff to do, but everything isn’t as close as I would have liked. It’s a cute little town though, so you should be entertained there. Have fun! – Kelli

The traffic in Paris can get very heavy, so try to avoid rush hour. Leave early for your trip to Champagne from Paris before the rush, around 7 am or treat yourself to a lie-in and leave a little later at 10 am.

France’s motorways tend to have tolls, so bear this in mind if you want to take the fast road. Of course, you can opt to avoid the tolls completely and follow the minor roads through the charming French villages, but this will add another hour to your journey.

There are several car parks dotted around Reims and Epernay. The central locations cost around €1.50 per hour, but if you park further out of the city centre and walk in, you can often find free street parking.

The downside to driving into the Champagne region is that the driver will not be able to participate in the Champagne tastings – similar to if you’re driving during our Loire Valley itinerary . So whether you have a hire car or not, consider taking the train or an organised tour if you want to get involved and sample the Champagne as part of the cellar tours. You can browse hire car options here .

Champagne Day Trip Itinerary

There is plenty to see and do in the Champagne region, from tasting houses to historical cathedrals.

We start in Reims, the capital of the region, and end in the charming town of Epernay, home to one of the most famous streets in the world, the Avenue de Champagne. You can easily explore the best of the region in just one day, making it the perfect day out from Paris.

Notre Dame de Reims

Whether you are arriving by train or by car, Reims is the perfect place to start your day. With a rich history dating back to Roman times, this charming town is known for its cultural heritage, gothic architecture and, of course, its famous Champagne houses.

The first stop on our Champagne region day trip is the Notre Dame de Reims cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the coronation site of the Kings of France.

This Gothic masterpiece is truly breathtaking, with stunning stained glass windows and intricate carvings. Built in the 13th century, this cathedral is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the whole of France. You can organise a guided tour here .

Notre Dame de Reims

Musée de la Reddition

If you are a history enthusiast, this one is for you. Reims is home to the Musée de la Reddition (Museum of Surrender). It is by no means a spectacular building but the historical significance placed on this one room makes it a must-visit destination in Reims.

Here, in the early hours of Monday, May 7, 1945, three senior officers from the German armed forces signed an unconditional surrender agreement, effectively ending World War II in Europe. The museum is home to documents, artefacts, press releases and the original war maps placed on the walls.

Although you may not find this museum in every guide to visiting Reims, it is a pivotal location for our world history and is well worth visiting.

Champagne Tasting in Reims

Reims is the capital of the Champagne wine region, home to 155 miles of cellars under the city streets. Our next stop is, of course, a Champagne tasting.

There are several world-renowned Champagne houses offering cellar tours and tastings across the town. You may have a personal favourite you would like to visit, but here are our top 3.

Tattinger – Taittinger is a family-owned Champagne house with over 280 hectares of vineyards in the region. You can tour the cellars and learn about the Champagne-making process, as well as taste some of their world-famous wines.

Veuve Clicquot – Veuve Clicquot is one of the most iconic Champagne houses in the world, known for its distinctive yellow label. You can take a tour of the cellars with a knowledgeable guide and learn about the history of the house, as well as sample some of their delicious Champagne.

Pommery – Pommery is another family-owned Champagne house with a rich history and a reputation for producing high-quality Champagne. The cellars at Pommery are particularly impressive, with a maze of underground tunnels that you can explore. The house also hosts art exhibitions throughout the year, making it a unique and exciting place to visit.

Lunch in Reims

After sampling some of the region’s finest Champagne, you’re bound to have worked up an appetite. Reims is home to some excellent cafes and restaurants offering classic French cuisine.

If you are hoping to match the luxurious Champagne with top-end cuisine, Le Jardin Les Crayères is the restaurant for you. This Michelin-starred restaurant is located in a beautiful 19th-century mansion and offers an elegant and refined dining experience. The menu features classic French dishes with a modern twist, using local and seasonal ingredients.

For a more budget-friendly option, visit Brasserie du Boulingrin. This traditional brasserie is located in the heart of Reims and serves up classic French dishes in a lively and bustling atmosphere. The menu includes favourites like steak frites, escargot, and onion soup.

If you prefer to pack a picnic, you can enjoy your lunch in the Parc de la Patte d’Oie, a beautiful park that features a lake, walking paths, and picnic areas.

Explore Epernay

After lunch, it’s time to head on to our next stop, Epernay. A must-visit destination for Champagne lovers and history enthusiasts alike, this charming town is home to some of the world’s most famous Champagne producers, including Dom Perignon, Moët & Chandon, Perrier-Jouët, and Mercier.

The smaller town of the two, Epernay has a higher concentration of Champagne houses and a certain small-town charm.

Getting from Reims to Epernay is quick and easy, thanks to the efficient local trains that run between the two towns. The trains run every hour or so from the Gare de Reims and take just 35 minutes.

Our first stop in Epernay is the Avenue de Champagne. A grand and elegant street located in the heart of Epernay, known for its beautiful mansions and prestigious Champagne houses.

Take a stroll down the tree-lined avenue to soak in the atmosphere. During the summer months, the trees blossom with beautiful white flowers, which add to the grandeur.

Before heading into one of the Champagne houses to enjoy the rest of the afternoon, take a tour around the Musée du vin de Champagne et d’Archéologie régionale.

Housed in the breathtaking 19th century Château Perrier, once home to Champagne merchants, it makes the perfect location to learn more about the region’s wines and architecture.

The museum offers a fully immersive discovery of the ingredients that go into Champagne alongside the historical heritage. The gardens towards the rear are beautifully kept and provide a relaxing break.

Entry includes an audio tour and access to the gardens. You can also enter the gardens for free without entry to the museum if you want to just take a quick stroll away from the hustle and bustle.

Epernay

Champagne Tasting in Epernay

As the afternoon sun beats down on the Champagne houses, it’s time to enjoy another round of sampling. Discover some of the 68 miles of cellars located below the streets of Epernay.

Epernay is home to some of the world’s most famous Champagne houses. Each one offers cellar tours and tastings year-round. There are many incredible varieties of Champagne on offer, from the large, iconic houses to the smaller boutique family-run establishments. Whatever your taste, you may already have a favourite in mind, but here are our top 3.

Moët & Chandon – Moët & Chandon is perhaps one of the most famous Champagne houses in the world. They offer a fantastic cellar tour that takes you through their vast network of underground cellars. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the historic cellars where Napoleon Bonaparte stored his personal collection of Champagne.

Mercier – Mercier, one of the largest Champagne houses in the region, offers a truly unique and immersive cellar tour experience. You can even ride a small train through the vast network of underground cellars.

Perrier-Jouët – Perrier-Jouët is known for its elegant and delicate Champagnes. The tour includes a visit to the famous “Crayères” cellars, which are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you would prefer to spend the afternoon outdoors, head out of town to discover the vineyards sprawled across the picturesque rolling hills. You can hire regular or electric bikes to cycle through the country lanes, stopping off at vineyards to sample a glass or purchase a bottle along the way.

There are also several short walks that rise up behind the town to the west. Navigate the narrow lanes and meandering footpaths between the vines whilst enjoying the far-reaching views across the town and beyond. This is simply one of the best things to do on a day trip to Champagne from Paris.

Hi. Is there a tour company that does what you listed in the day itinerary section? I am interested in going to Veuve, Moet and Avenue de Champagne. I looked at the 2 tours you linked but it didn’t seem these 3 things were guaranteed. Thanks!

Hi Ashley, many of the groups tours unfortunately don’t guarantee which champagne houses you’ll visit. If you want to visit specific places then you might need to book a private tour such as this full-day tour or this full-day tour if you don’t want to travel independently.

Where is the Champagne Region?

The Champagne is a wine region in the East of France. The distance between Paris and the Champagne Region is around 140 km/90 miles, and the Region borders Belgium in the north .

The short distance between the two locations makes day trips to Champagne from Paris one of the best getaways from Paris. From Paris to Reims, it’s just a 40 min. train ride.

Reims and Épernay are the two commercial centers of the Champagne, and also the cities where most Champagne producers have their headquarters.

The Champagne-Ardenne, that’s the official name of the Champagne Region, was an independent administrative region of France. In 2016, it got merged with the neighboring regions Alsace and Lorraine to form the new region Grand Est.

Paris to Champagne - how to get from paris to champagne? The best is taking a train paris to champagne

That being said, the Champagne is a fairly large region.

But to visit the Champagne houses, vineyards, and cellars, you should head to Reims .

Reims is the biggest city in the region and the center of Champagne productions. Most big Champagne houses – Les Grandes Marques – have their headquarters and visitor center there.

Then there is also Épernay . It’s a small town 40 minutes from Reims, but nevertheless the second most important Champagne city.

The most famous Dom Perignon brand has its headquarters and visitor’s center in Éparnay.

Reims or Éparnay – What’s The Best For Your Paris Champagne Tour?

Book this tour to visit Reims & Éparnay and enjoy 6 Champagne tastings

Reims and Éparnay are the two global headquarters of Champagne production. Both are worth a visit for a full experience. However, Reims is easier to get to from Paris. So I recommend that if you plan your tour on your own, you focus on visiting Reims.

If you want to include both destinations, you best book a tour from Paris that includes both destinations. This Champagne tour is the best pick for a full experience of Reims and Éparnay.

If you drive the distance yourself by car or visit by train, you will easily feel rushed. Visiting both, Éparnay and Reims by train in one day is not really feasible.

Champagne day trip from Paris - one thing you will quickly learn is that only grapes growing in the region can be used for Champagne

Why You Should Visit the Champagne Region from Paris

The first reason to visit the Champagne region is obviously to taste Champagne . Because even though it’s fairly common to refer to all sorts of sparkling wine as Champagne, it’s fundamentally wrong.

Only sparkling wine that comes from the Champagne region, made from regional grapes and ages in the miles-long underground cave system, can legally be called Champagne . By visiting the Champagne, you’re basically at the source of everything that is good.

Wait, you are more into wine? Take a day trip to Bordeaux instead!

But Champagne as a region is also historically a very interesting destination. The biggest city of the new Grand Est region, Reims, had already been a major city in the Roman Empire . Some ruins got preserved until today!

Reims also has one of the most important cathedrals in France. Between the 12th and the 19th century, most french kings got crowned there. Located relatively close to the German border, many battlegrounds of WWI were located in the Champagne region and can also be visited today.

reims champagne - the centre of the famous champagne!

And to get back to the fun stuff: you can taste champagne!

What is Champagne?

Champagne is a sparkling wine made from Chardonnay, Pinot noir or Pinot Meunier grapes . Even though the term Champagne is for many a generic label for any kind of sparkling wine, legally ONLY those coming from the region can be called Champagne.

About The Gare de l’Est Train Station

Gare de l’Est has 30 platforms. Platform 2-12 and 23 -30 are used by main train lines, for example, the high-speed train TGV

Aim to arrive 30 minutes before departure at the train station to be on the safe side. Around 15 minutes before departure, the platform number will be indicated on screens. High-speed trains and trains to Reims are shown on the screen labeled “ Départs Grandes Lignes “.

To be on the safe side, aim to arrive 30 minutes before your train is scheduled.

Buy Tickets For Your Trip From Paris to Reims By Train

You can purchase your train tickets at the SNCF ticket office in Hall Alsace on the ground floor, or at the ticket vending machines that you find all over the station.

However, buying your ticket on the day might be very expensive and you risk that the train you plan to board is sold out.

Better: Purchase your tickets in advance  here

The cathedral of Reims - just a few minutes from the station if you take the Paris to Champagne Train

Make sure that your purchased ticket is a mobile ticket , so you only need to have them on your phone and don’t need to print them out.

However, if you are not sure you’ll have an internet connection, take a screenshot, just to be on the safe side.

Plan Your Day Trip from Paris to Champagne

If you organize your day trip from Paris to Champagne on your own, you should put a few things on your agenda. Apart from the Cathedral of Reims (beautiful!), your agenda should be filled with a couple of Champagne Houses.

If you are traveling by train, and are keen to visit both, Reims and Épernay , I advise booking a tour that starts from Reims.

Even though the train from Reims to Épernay only takes around 40 minutes, and it’s theoretically doable to visit both locations, independently. However, You will find yourself rushing.

There are simply too many schedules to respect to make it an enjoyable day trip: Train departure times, Champagne House reservations, connecting train schedules to head back etc.

You’ll be very much running from A to B.

See this all-in-one tour from Reims that includes both cities. You can also visit a champagne house in Reims on your account in the morning and join an organized tour to Épernay in the afternoon. This tour is the most popular one.

Visiting the Les Grandes Marques : The Champagne Houses in Reims

If visiting Reims with an organized tour is not really your cup of tea, you can certainly visit the headquarters and cellars of the big Champagne Houses, Les Grandes Marques, on your own.

The big houses are offering guided visits that you simply can sign up for online. Below I put together a list of the most popular ones. Just keep in mind that they are not necessarily in the center of Reims and you need to organize your own transportation.

There are busses and trams circulating in Reims, or you just get a taxi.

Or walk – from the center of Reims to Veuve Clicquot, it’s around 40min on foot.

The most popular Champagne houses in Reims:

• Veuve Clicquot – 5km from train station • guided visit from 30€/p • Ruinard-  5km from train station • guided visit from 70€/p • Pommery –  5km from train station • guided visit from 25€/p • Mumm – 1.5km from train station • guided visit from 23€/p • Taittinger – 5km from train station • guided visit from 21€/p

Find the Best Itinerary For Your Champagne Trip

There are quite a few options on how to travel to Reims and how to fill your day. It can be quite confusing but I summed up 3 options that are the most efficient.

What you pick depends on your travel style – do you appreciate traveling with a group or are you more of an independent traveler? and of course: your budget.

If you plan to visit the Champagne on a budget , book your train tickets early to get some low-fare tickets. If you reserve only one Champagne tasting and have a budget lunch, your Champagne day trip will be probably around 80€ per person. But that’s really the bare minimum.

The long cellars of the champagne houses are part of any champagne day trip from Paris

Option #1: Reims Tour, self-organized

cost for transportation to Reims, tastings, transportation in Reims, and Lunch: from approx. €150

Hop on a train (don’t forget to  book your train ticket in advance, especially since the morning trains are often sold out) and try to be in Reims early. I like to book tickets with omio.com , their page is straightforward to navigate, and you get the tickets conveniently sent to your mobile phone.

After some sightseeing , visiting the Cathedral is a must (!!)  head to the first Champagne house of your choice and enjoy a guided visit and a Champagne tasting .

Depending on where your first Champagne experience took place, you can either have lunch around the Domaine (might be a bit pricey though) or head to the Place Drouet d’Erlon in the center.

It’s a pedestrian street with plenty of restaurants. Best to check TripAdvisor to know what eateries are close to your morning Champagne tasting.

Visit a second Champagne House in the afternoon before heading back to Paris. If you can’t decide which are the best Champagne houses to visit, Taittinger and Pommery are very popular ones.

try some lovely champagne on a paris day trip

Option #2 – Visit the Champagne Region from Reims

cost for transportation to Reims, guided tour, and Lunch: from approx. 220€

This is a great option if you are keen to explore the region to the fullest with a tour guide but save on transportation.

Organize your own transportation from Paris to Reims and make sure you arrive around 9 am. To be on the safe side, it’s of course, best to reserve your train tickets in advance online (I think I might have mentioned that already :))

Your tour starts at 9.30 and is by far the most popular Champagne tour from Reims. Compared to similar tours, the Pommery Champagne Morning Tour & Tastings is the best value for money , it includes, among others:

  • Champagne tastings Champagne Pommery
  • visit to a family-run winery
  • a sightseeing tour of Reims
  • transportation and English-speaking guide

You’ll be back at the train station of Reims in the early afternoon to visit the city and to catch your train from Reims to Paris.

champagne paris day trip: only a short train ride before you can taste bubbly champagne in the vineyards of the region

Option 3: Reims, Épernay, self-organized

Cost for transportation to Reims, guided tour, and Lunch: from approx. 180€

Catch an early train from Gare de l’Est to arrive in Reims before 9.  Start your day off with sightseeing in Reims, visit the Cathedral, have a morning café, and visit a Champagne House of your choice.

Don’t forget to reserve your spot in advance, though. I linked the visitor and booking pages of the Champagne houses just above.

I suggest having lunch at Café de Palais . It has excellent reviews and is not far from the tourism office, the meeting point for your next activity.

You will leave Reims in the afternoon and take a trip  through the vineyards of the Champagne region . Visit Hautvillers and a family-run winery. You’ll learn everything about Champagne production and – of course – taste Champagne.

Click here to get more information about this Champagne afternoon tour.

You’ll be back at the train station of Reims in the early evening. Just in time to hop on your train back to Paris.

To avoid stress, I recommend again purchasing your train ticket online .

What my Husband and I did: Wedding Anniversary in Reims

For our wedding anniversary, my husband and I chose to spend a day in Reims. It turned out to be a lovely and memorable day.

We started our journey from Paris in the morning via TGV and our first stop was the Cathedral of Reims and a stroll through the city. The city was bigger than I expected, with many Shops, Restaurants, and Cafés.

Since it was a special occasion, we opted for lunch at Racine , a 2-star French-Japanese fusion restaurant. It’s a great choice for anyone looking for an exceptional dining experience, offering delicious food and excellent service. It was a bit on the pricey side, but well worth it.

Our trip also included, of course, a tour of a Champagne House. We picked Veuve Clicquot, which held sentimental value for us as it was the Champagne we served at our wedding. The tour was informative and engaging, particularly learning about the legacy of Veuve Clicquot.

The champagne tasting was a delightful experience, with generous servings that added to our enjoyment and made me buy more Champagne than I intended 😉

Voilà, taking a day tour from Paris to Champagne is fairly easy to organize, but you need to prebook.. You can take one of the unique Paris to Champage tours, or you organize the day trip on your own. Either way, it will be a day to remember. Bon voyage!

Champagne’s history dates back to the Romans, who first planted vineyards in the area. However, it wasn’t until the 17th century that the region began to develop the sparkling wine to which it would lend its name, thanks to advancements in the méthode champenoise .

The area’s unique terroir, characterized by chalky soil and a cool climate, is crucial for producing the distinct taste and effervescence of Champagne wine.

The region is also home to some of the world’s most prestigious champagne houses, including Veuve Clicquot , Moët & Chandon , and Dom Pérignon .

These houses offer tours that delve into the intricate process of champagne production, from grape picking to bottling, providing an insightful experience into the craft behind the bubbles.

The Champagne region is also dotted with historical sites, such as the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Reims Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture where French kings were once crowned. The region’s rolling hills, adorned with endless vineyards and punctuated by picturesque villages, offer stunning vistas that captivate visitors.

Visiting Champagne offers a multifaceted experience that goes beyond wine tasting. It’s a journey through history, a lesson in the art of viticulture, and an opportunity to witness the natural beauty of France.

About the Champagne Wine Region

Hautvilliers France

The historical region of Champagne is located in the French region of Grand Est, close to Belgium and Luxembourg.

The presence of vineyards in the region could be older than in Roman times. As in all wine-growing regions, the monks contributed a lot to the work of the land and to the development and perfection of this wine.

Today, the wine region of Champagne is spread around five French departments, and there are five main regions or zones: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne and Côte des Bars .

The region of Champagne is France’s coldest winemaking region, often subject to violent weather conditions. These hazards have forced the winegrowers to adopt certain methods that would be considered doubtful in other French wine regions (but there, it works!).

The mix of several wines to constitute a cuvée is also part of the history of Champagne. The dominant white grape is chardonnay, while the red grapes are pinot noir and meunier. Other allowed grapes for champagne wines are arbane, petit meslier, pinot blanc, and pinot gris.

The Champagne region produces champagne wine, the only sparkling wine that can use this name, made according to specific standards. It also has good white wines, which tend to be lighter, crisper, and less fruity than other wine areas in France.

DID YOU KNOW? The word champagne is the second most used French word worldwide!

Wine Tasting and Shopping at the Small Producers

day trip paris to champagne

Not all winegrowers have big names or big budgets for marketing, but this does not mean that they don’t produce good champagne wines. Quite the opposite!

Because they work on smaller parcels, at a human scale, the Champagne winegrowers are more successful in respecting the vines and, therefore, in harvesting grapes at the proper maturity. They generally use less of the various chemicals found in viticulture and produce vintages without makeup.

Be adventurous and go beyond the main marquees. Chat with the winegrowers, and do some tastings. Only good surprises are guaranteed.

With this experience, you’ll get picked up from any hotel in central Paris. Then, during the drive, your expert guide will give you the lowdown on the history of Champagne production.

Once in Épernay, you’ll go for a prowl around a major Champagne house – most likely, Dom Pérignon.

“ This was such a fun day trip. Our guide Batiste was very knowledgeable and able to answer every question we had. We did one small champagne house, a large commercial one and finished up the tour with a bottle of champagne in a vineyard. It was really interesting to see the differences in how each one produces champagne.” Caroline ( read more reviews now )

Next, you’ll visit a boutique estate where over 80 farmers work day in, day out to make sparkling wines for special occasions and that you will personally love drinking (Keep the Dom, this one is epic).

Here, you’ll clink glasses right in the midst of the vineyards and go for a stroll along Avenue de Champagne afterward.

All in all, this is one of the coolest Champagne tours near Paris for history buffs since you’ll get to look at utensils that were used to make this classic drink at a local museum.

“Our tour guide , Karl was amazingly nice and knowledgeable. He was also extremely accommodating to everyone’s needs. The cellars were wonderful. So, if you’re not a morning person, the thought of boarding a minibus at this hour (aka 7:00 am) might not impress you.

But, you’d be corking mad to pass up on one of the most popular Champagne tours near Paris.

In a nutshell, this Day Trip to Champagne with Eight Tastings and Lunch takes you to the green hills of northeast France.

Note, the exact schedule is subject to change. But, over the course of the day, you’ll visit a major Champagne house and an indie estate.

Plus, you’ll have the option to walk along the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay or visit Reims Cathedral.

FYI, it’ll be either Moët & Chandon, Mumm, Veuve Clicquot, Mercier, Pommery, or Lanson where you’ll receive your tasting and tour.

“Amazing day in the French countryside – highly recommend. We learnt so much about Champagne – both the region and the product. Our tour guide was Thomas and he was superb! Very knowledgable, warm and friendly, he taught us so much and answered all of our questions. On the day we were taken to Veuve Clicquot, a delicious lunch experience and a smaller house – everything was perfect. My only feedback would be to explore adding speakers to the back row of the van to ensure those in the back seats can hear well as there were a few things we couldn’t hear.” Rachael ( read more reviews now )

Over at the smaller estate, you’ll learn the art of “à la volée”. But, you’ll need to book this tour to figure out what that actually means (I guess you could Google it but where’s the fun in that?).

Meanwhile, lunch will take place either at a family-run champagne house or a local restaurant.

Then, after eating, you’ll take a leisurely tour through the vineyard of the Côte des Blancs and Vallée de la Marne so that you can digest your epic lunch before heading back to Paris.

“Cannot recommend this excursion highly enough! The trip included a visit to Reims’ Notre Dame Cathedral-which was a great alternative to being able to tour the one in Paris. Our guide was knowledgeable, engaging & she made the trip incredibly fun! We toured a small champagne house in Epernay (Delaunois-Chanel) with the owner and later a large tasting house (Nicolas Feuillatte). We also visited the Abbey where Dom Perignon is buried. Day went by quickly but wasn’t rushed & well worth the price.” Mark ( read more reviews now )

Because this Champagne Tour from Paris with Reims Cellars includes just one cellar visit. And, that’s where you’ll enjoy your guided tasting experience.

Actually, this is the best tour if you’re super sensitive to alcohol and would rather not risk a hangover.

Plus, lunch isn’t included in the base rate. Therefore, the price comes out lower than all of the other day tours of Champagne from Paris.

However, it’s a rad choice if you’re more excited about seeing the countryside and gaining a wider perspective on Champagne history and culture.

Okay but what if you don’t have time during your 24 hours in Paris to devote a whole day of gallivanting around the Champagne region?

In that case, the next best thing is to book one of the most exclusive Champagne tours in Paris. Now, this French Wine and Champagne Tasting in Paris gives you a couple of options.

However, my fave is the wine and Champagne masterclass served with either cheese, charcuterie, or both. Or, you can save some pennies with the food-free option.

And since I adore food, I am 100% not a fan of that idea. After all, this is France and really you should take any opportunity to gorge on le fromage while you can.

“Our Sommelier was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable and a fun host! We enjoyed hearing about the different regions in France and the wines produced there. All of the wines we tried were delicious. I highly recommend doing this if you have time while you are in Paris.” Alyson ( read more reviews now )

Essentially, the class takes place in an atmospheric wine cellar beneath some of the most famous streets in Paris .

There, you’ll sip on six divine wines from regions like Bordeaux, Sancerre, and –obviously – Champagne. You’ll also learn all about these incredible vinos from your sommelier.

Pro Tip: Book this masterclass before your day trip to the Champagne region. That way, you can deepen your knowledge of this ritzy tipple AND other wines of France before your trip.

Because, we’re all in favor of education, right?

12. Champagne Tasting on a Seine River Cruise in Paris

A tourist boat cruising along the Seine in the evening during one of the best champagne tours in Paris.

We’re rounding off this list with one final Champagne tour in Paris and you’ll need your sea legs for this one.

Well, okay, your river legs since this Champagne Tasting on a Seine River Cruise lasts an hour and takes you on the Seine River as the name suggests.

Led by an expert sommelier, you’ll sample three different Champagnes as your luxurious boat floats past the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Grand Palais, and the Musée d’Orsay.

Plus, it takes place just before dusk or at night, depending on the season. Therefore, you’ll get to see Paris in the soft evening light or illuminated all around you.

Then, after one of the best champagne tours in Paris, you can grab dinner at a place specifically recommended to you by your expert, local guide.

Note, the vessel is a small river barge – not a giant ferry. This means that you’ll enjoy a nice, cozy vibe while onboard that is perfectly suited for asking questions and mingling with other travelers.

And, remember, if you like what you taste then you can pick up a bottle of Champers to take back to your hotel as an epic Paris souvenir . Ooh la la!

And again, you’ll strike gold if you book the Champagne cruise in addition to a full-day excursion.

Champagne Day Trip from Paris Details

Description - what's on in champagne.

Join us for this exceptional Champagne Day Tour from Paris, home of the world’s most celebrated sparkling wine! We selected for you the best places to visit in Champagne, from the biggest houses, to a boutique winery, so you can enjoy all day long. Your English-speaking guide will drive you through the beautiful vineyards, and give you plenty of anecdotes about the secrets of Champagne, a place where the uniqueness of the soils combines with the climate and the expertise of the winemakers to produce the famous drink, symbol of celebration and elegance for centuries across the world.

Morning – Champagne the glamourous

We will pick you up at your hotel or apartment in the morning, and offer you delicious and buttery freshly baked croissants, while driving to Champagne (about 1h30).

As soon as you arrive in the vineyards, you will be struck by the beauty of the landscape as you are given precious information about the history of the region, its most important characters and the process of Champagne production.

Your day will start in style, with a guided tour through the maze of cellars of one of the biggest bubble producers , such as Champagne Moët & Chandon , Mumm , Lanson , Mercier … (depending on availability). Learn about their unique history and production, tasting their flagship cuvee with the house sommelier.

Following a short drive, depending on our schedule, discover the village of Hautvillers and its abbey, where Dom Pérignon used to work as a cellar master over 300 years ago and made Champagne . Learn more about this legendary character and about his influence on the style and reputation of the drink. Stop by the wonderful vineyard of Champagne and enjoy a “wild tasting” conducted by your wine expert guide. Through this very unique experience and the tasting of a special cuvee, you will learn all the secrets of this famous bubbly drink.

Lunch – Traditional and authentic!

For lunch, settle at the table of a family-run winery or a traditional restaurant, where you will enjoy a delicious Gourmet French lunch, paired perfectly with 3 different Champagnes.

Afternoon – Become a bubble expert

Last but not least, you will stop at a cooperative winery where they created a museum of the different tools used to produce Champagne… By the end of the day, you are guaranteed to be a bubbles expert! Of course, you will taste several Champagnes there.

After all these discoveries and emotions, your guide will bring you back to Paris and drop you in Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, at around 6PM (depending on traffic)

We took the Champagne tour and we’re beyond impressed with the experience. Our guide, Carlos, was very knowledgeable, kind, and safe on the roads. His expertise was much appreciated. We cannot recommend this tour enough. It is a must!

Elaine Levens

Words cannot express how wonderful our trip was. Our guide, Carlos, was great. He was well versed on the region and all the Champagne Houses we went to. We enjoyed touring three different houses as well as a surprise stop along the way. I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone.

« We had an excellent day in the Champagne region of France thanks to My Winedays! Thomas, our guide, was knowledgeable and personable. Our visit to three Champagne houses gave us the opportunity to see a large, medium and small house. Our lunch at the smaller house was amazing! This was a great day! »

We had the best time with Carlos our tour guide who was so knowledgeable, friendly and added so much to the tour experience . We highly recommend this tour if you’re looking for a day trip out of the city. The champagne tastings were incredible but the lunch was on another level !

We took a few tours while we were on our honeymoon in Europe and this was the best part of the trip hands down. The small group atmosphere was great and our guide Simone was amazing. The champagne we were able to try was amazing and the lunch provided was awesome as well. The only bad part of the trip was that it eventually had to end!

Champagne fun facts.

Champagne Fun Facts

There are an astounding 200 million bottles of champagne stored in the 250 kilometers miles of caves beneath Reims. (Just have to pop into the basement… be right back!)

During World War I, each French soldier at the front line in Champagne was allotted a full bottle of bubbly every day.

Only wine made in the Champagne region can be called champagne. Other wine regions must settle for "sparkling wine" or a similar term. (We've always preferred "tinkle".)

Champagne is one of the northernmost major wine producing regions in the world.

Champagne is made from only three grape varieties — pinot noir, pinot meunier, and chardonnay.

Know how many twists it takes to remove the wire champagne cage? 6 half-turns, counter-clockwise. Always.

Méthode Champenoise is the traditional method of creating champagne. After an initial round of fermentation and bottling, a second fermentation occurs while the wine is stored in the bottle. Even if other regions make their bubbly the same way, they have to call it Méthode Traditionelle.

There are 50 million bubbles in a bottle of champagne. We counted.

Champagne goes especially well with salty, fatty foods. Think caviar, potato chips, or our favourite — deep-fried calamari. The sweetness in strawberries or desserts can destroy the delicate flavors of champagne.

Capitalized "Champagne" is the region, lower-case "champagne" is the wine.

And you can drink all you like since you're not driving yourself!

Private Day Trip from Paris to Champagne

  • A Trip to Champagne
  • Depart Paris
  • Beautiful Landscape
  • Champagne Cellar
  • Lunch in Épernay
  • More Champagne
  • Back to Paris

Celebrate your arrival in France on this private round-trip Paris day trip to Champagne. Take in the region's rolling hills of productive vineyards and visit two of the area's major cities. See the Reims Cathedral, and taste bubbly at two different Champagne houses. Then pay homage to Dom Pérignon at the Abbey of Hautvillers.

Champagne Private Day Trip Description

This full-day tour includes:

Round-trip, private luxury transportation from Paris

Tastings at two champagne houses

Free time in Épernay for lunch

A visit to the famous cathedral in Reims

Cathedral in Reims Tour

Before we get some bubbles in you, visit the Reims Cathedral in the capital city of the Champagne region. The site of dozens of coronations, the Notre Dame de Reims has even witnessed a crowning in 1429 that Joan of Arc attended. Take some time to enjoy the phenomenal architecture and learn about the important role it played in the history of the French royals. Regarded as one of the greatest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe, the interior features stained glass that ranges from the 13th to the 20th century.

Famous Taittinger Champagne

After exploring the Reims Cathedral, it's time for the main attraction of this private Paris day trip. One of the most well-known names in the region, Taittinger Champagne is a heavy hitter in the production of sparkling wine. Enjoy a tour of the champagne cellars to learn more about how the wine is produced from 288 hectares of vineyards. Then, enjoy some of the finest Taittinger Champagne now that you appreciate how it's made even more.

While we do our best to visit the Taittinger Champagne house, sometimes we substitute this stop for another exceptional Champagne house in the area based on availability.

Lunch in Épernay

After your tasting at Taittinger, visit the charming French town of Épernay. The historical market center of the Champagne region, check out some of the boutique wine shops and enjoy some free time to eat lunch. Champagne connoisseurs from all over the world consider Épernay one of the best destinations, with over 300 champagne crus to savor. Plus, Épernay also features beautiful architecture and gardens.

Lunch is not included in the price of this tour, but your guide will have plenty of suggestions!

Abbey of Hautvillers in Reims

The Abbaye Saint-Pierre d’Hautvillers is also in Reims. This is where champagne connoisseurs travel to pay their respects to the monk Dom Pérignon. A pioneer in the champagne industry, the Benedictine monk paved the way to perfect the champagne-making process. While Dom Pérignon did not invent champagne, he made significant contributions to it.

Local Champagne Vineyard

Visit a small, family-owned champagne house, then compare the champagne-tasting experience with that of Taittinger. See for yourself what makes a family-owned house different from a large, world-famous one. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonay are the main grapes used in almost all types of official French champagne. And by the end of your private tour in the Champagne region, you'll probably be able to spot the difference.

Finally, after you've come, seen, and tasted, it's time to return to Paris. Climb aboard your comfortable private transportation and enjoy the scenic journey back to your accommodations in Paris.

A great way to spend a whole day when in France. My sisters and I had a lovely time, very relaxed. Our driver was very kind and pleasant. We used Tour guy 3x on our vacation and had the best experience each time!

I love my bubbly!

This was a honeymoon trip for my husband and myself. Our driver picked us up at our hotel and our adventure began. It was morning, so we were a bit sleepy and the driver let us snooze a little. As we got closer, he started explaining the area of Champagne. We ended up at two different champagne houses and had a great place for lunch. Highly recommend!

Champagne tour

Our driver, tour guide did not speak much English and could not educate us about the sites, scenery along the beautiful drive to our first winery in Champagne. He did guide us to a great place for lunch. We went to 2 wineries, the first was fabulous and gave the 3 of us a private tour when the other large group was late. The second was also a newer winery, but not very sophisticated, only used one grape and we left early. Would have been much better had we gone to an older, different winery to get a better experience of the region.

The Perfect Paris To Champagne Day Trip Itinerary

Champagne, the famous bubbly everyone loves to celebrate to, is a region in France located 90km outside of Paris. All of the famous Champagne companies like Moet and Chandon, Veuve Cliquot, GG Mumm, and Pierre Paillard have cellars and vineyards in this region. The high speed trains make it easy to get here and makes for the perfect day trip for those looking to escape the crowds of Paris. I read countless blogs and articles on doing this trip and there really wasn’t a good resource that was helpful for those looking to do the trip on your own. Hopefully, this post will help those looking for the right information.

If you have even more time in Paris and want to explore more French wine regions, because who needs a reason to explore France’s amazing wines, then make sure to also read my Paris to Burgundy day trip itinerary where you can sample some of the world’s most famous Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in a setting that may be even more beautiful than Champagne!

In addition, I also visited the beautiful wine region of Provence famous for its wine, beautiful villages, and lavender fields!

What makes Champagne Champagne?

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers

Champagne, for those that do not know, is sparkling wine specifically from the region of Champagne . Any sparkling wine that is not from this region in France is simply sparkling wine and cannot be called Champagne. It is made from a combination of three grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier.

It wasn’t until recent years when I started drinking wine that I learned of this fact. I, along with many others in the world, just considered Champagne the de facto noun to denote any sort of bubbly wine. It’s similar to people mistaking Kobe cows in Japan as all Japanese cows when it just means it is grown in the prefecture of Kobe, adhering to the stringent standards of the area.

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers

In fact, only about 5% of the world’s sparkling wine is produced in France’s Champagne region.

Organized Tours or Do it yourself?

Given Champagne’s fame, you can expect a ton of organized tours that pick you up from Paris for the day. Given its popularity, these tours can book months in advance, especially for the summer months when the vineyards are their most vibrant right before the harvest. These tours are also quite expensive at 200-300 euros per person or so for just the day trip.

I was actually planning to visit The Palace of Versailles until I realized they were closed on Mondays. We decided to visit Champagne the night before so obviously booking a tour was out of the question. This is Europe however, and the transport is fantastic all over so there is absolutely no need to book a tour to visit Champagne. Doing this tour on our own was incredibly easy and this was easily one of the highlights of my time in France. Of course I would always recommend to rent a car and properly explore the region over the course of a few days like I did while visiting the Tuscany wine region of Italy but it just wasn’t in the cards for this trip.

As I planned this trip last minute, I did everything on my own. The rest of this post will be for those looking to plan this trip on their own, or just to have a general idea of what the Champagne region is like.

Where to go in Champagne?

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip train station epernay

Champagne is the name of the region, and there are numerous towns within the region. Reims  and Epernay are the largest and most central towns within the region. These two towns are about 40 minutes away from each other and for Paris day trippers, you’ll need to choose one or the other. There is not enough time to do both in the same day.

After doing a ton of research, I settled on Epernay . This is the smaller of the two towns and has a higher concentration of Champagne cellars and is less built up. Having been in Paris for a few days, I was keen to get away from the hectic nature of the city. Epernay is the perfect antidote. The town’s iconic Avenue de Champagne houses some of the most famous Champagne brands like Moet and Chandon, Pol Roger, Boizel etc and feels like you’re walking on a gold paved road.

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay

Book cellar tours

Each Champagne house in Epernay works differently. Some only do reserved tours at set times, while others allow you to walk in and just taste their wines for a price. I would recommend booking a tour or two to get an overview of champagne production and then just tasting champagnes on your own. There’s no point to book multiple tours in a day as the variation between champagne making techniques is not something a novice champagne drinker will understand, let alone remember.

Champagne Cellars in the town, vineyards outside of town

The town of Epernay is where all the major champagne brands have their cellars and houses. The Avenue De Champagne runs through the town and is lined with dozens of huge and beautiful houses. Each house houses the company’s champagne in their underground cellars, as well as a house to showcase their product by offering tours, and just because they are cool enough to have an old estate.

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers moet and chandon cellars

The Vineyards themselves are located outside of the town . For example, Moet and Chandon produces and bottles all their wines at their estate in Epernay, but the grapes are grown outside of the town. I was envisioning sipping champagne with views of the vineyards and the rolling French countryside like my time in Stellenbosch, South Africa , but Epernay and Reims will not offer this . You’ll need to get out to the countryside yourself.

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers

This is part of the reason I chose Epernay. While looking at a map, I could see that Epernay was right near the countryside whereas Reims is a bit further out. Logically, I just figured it would be easier to get to the countryside from Epernay than Reims (and I was correct!)

Getting to Champagne from Paris

The high speed SNCF trains make it a breeze to get to the Champagne region. All trains leave from Paris Gare De L’est and take roughly 40 minutes to Reims, and 80 minutes to Epernay. The high speed bullet trains are immaculately clean and incredibly comfortable (as I’ve grown accustomed to with my train experiences in Europe).

high speed SNCF trains

The further in advance you book these tickets, the cheaper they will be. As I only planned to visit Champagne the night before, the tickets were 24 euros one way to Epernay. I saw tickets for 13 euros one way if I were to book a week later. Tickets can also be purchased at the station for the same price. As of July 2018, there were strikes (It’s France, when is there not a strike?) so the train only left every two hours. No one checked our tickets at any point on the train ride so I suppose we could have gotten away without paying anything!

There are also buses that make the regular journey to Reims and Epernay. These buses are normally much cheaper but take over 2 hours to get there. Not ideal for a day tripper.

Renting a car in Paris

If you don’t want to deal with timing the trains correctly, consider renting a car in Paris and driving to Champagne yourself. Not only will this allow you to see more places in Champagne, but will also give you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Cruising through the French countryside is an experience in and of itself! The roads in France are in great condition and finding your way around is efficient and simple.

Visiting Moet and Chandon Cellar

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers moet and chandon cellars

Moet and Chandon, easily one of the most recognizable and famous brands is located in the town of Epernay. Their cellars are some of the largest and oldest in the country. They offer daily tours where you spend 1 hour learning about the history of the Moet and Chandon family, touring the cellars and learning about the production of Champagne, and finally a tasting of the good stuff.

There are different price points for the tours but they just involve different grades of champagne at the end of the tour. I booked the standard tour for 25 euros and I very much enjoyed my tour.

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers moet and chandon cellars

The Moet and Chandon grounds are very nice and the cellar tour was very informational. They went through the origin story of the Moet name and how it became the formidable brand it is now over the course of many generations. I was especially intrigued at how Moet and Chandon branded themselves as a brand synonymous with luxury.

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers

While the vineyards are not in Epernay, the cellars where the champagne is produced is located on these exact grounds. They have an extensive 30km underground system where they store, age, and bottle their wine. The tour took us through the underground system where we learned about champagne production from start to finish. We capped off the tour with a glass of bubbly in their beautiful tasting room.

Visiting Hautvillers from Epernay

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers

At the recommendation of the people working at the Epernay Information Center (which was extremely helpful I must say), they recommended I visit the town of Hautvillers to actually visit the vineyards and champagne taste with views. I was envisioning of going from vineyard to vineyard like when I was wine tasting in Stellenbosch , and Hautvillers is as good as it’s gonna get without my own car. From Epernay, I had the visitor center call a taxi to take me to Hautvillers (there is no Uber here sadly). The cost was 15 euros one way.

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers

Hautvillers was honestly more what I was envisioning when I decided to come here. Situated in the heart of the Reims Mountain vineyards, this quaint and rustic little village is the cradle of champagne making. It is here that the the monk Dom Perignon (yes that one) discovered the art of champagne wine-making. The main street of the town is aptly named Rue Dom Perignon and the Saint-Sindulphe abbey church still houses his tomb to this day.

We had lunch here at Le 36 restaurant. They had a champagne tasting menu of their own as well as tasty French cuisine with plenty of bread and cream sauces.

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers

Champagne Tasting in Hautvillers

After lunch, I visited the Champagne G. Tribault vineyard which had fantastic views of the vines and was exactly what I was looking for (champagne tasting with views) followed by a visit to Fedyk Olivier which had delicious rose and brut. There are many more champagne houses here but many of them are closed on Mondays.

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers

I took a taxi back to Epernay at 16:30 for a final champagne tasting on Avenue De Champagne before taking the train back to Paris at 18:30.

Champagne region france tasting paris day trip epernay hautvillers

We got back to Paris around 20:00, which was more than enough time to get dinner in the city, visit the Eiffel Tower for the sunset and enjoying some champagne that we had bought during the day!

I think if we came back, we would most definitely spend a night or two in Hautvillers or Epernay so we could visit more of the wineries in the region. We saw so many cute little bed and breakfasts that would be perfect for a side trip out of Paris. Here is a list of amazing bed and breakfasts which are definitely the way to do it in the French wine country!

Hi this itinerary is amazinggggg but I cannot find any information on Champagne Tasting at Champagne Kedvi! do you have a website? THANK YOU!!!!

Hi nicolette, glad you found this helpful. Now sure what you mean by kedvi?

On your itinerary at 15:00!

Ah apologies it is a typo I hadn’t found until now! It is supposed to be Fedyk Olivier!

Love this for a do it yourself! Love Au 36. If any of your readers want a driver for a day trip to champagne please email me! I set this up. I’m Sydney at [email protected] . I’ve been doing that for 9 yrs

I would say you did a great job for an easy to follow trip! I would suggest though that you visit more small champagne boutique style growers 🙂 They are the heart and soul of the region! Champagne G. Tribault vineyard is quite gorgeous but commercial and there are so many others to choose.

Actually there are 19,000 other small vineyards to choose! You can see the vines, taste 3 glasses and interact with the whole family. For a more off the beaten path schedule w/ a driver:

8:50am – Depart Paris Gare De L’Est

9:20am – Arrive in Champagne Ardenne

9:30am – Visit the Cathedral w/ insane Marc Chagall stained glass and shell wounds from WWI

10 – 12:00 – Champagne Ruinart Tour and Tasting- The oldest caves from 1720 and the most insane lux tour and tasting of 2 glasses of some of the best large producer champagne in France!

12:15-14:15 – Lunch at Les Crayeres- 2 Michelin stars and 75€ for the 3-5 course menu is a steal! Plus wine pairing is 30€ extra. Thursday to Saturday included, only for lunch

15:00- 16:30 – Champagne Le Gallais tour of cellar, vines, tasting of 3 glasses of champagne and sabering a bottle! So so special and a tiny grower that produces 30,000 bottles a year. Your driver and guide will translate for you.

16:45 Chocolate cork tasting filled with champagne liquor at La Petite Friande

18h20 – Champagne Ardenne train back to Paris

Hi Sydney, this looks fantastic! Will def look into this for the next time I’m in Champagne. And yes, totally agree that if we had a car meeting us in the Champagne region, we would have been able to see a lot more!

Yes totally, you can see even more with a car! Let me know when you are back and I can help. My favorites are-

Champagne Ruinart, the private Dom Perignon visit at Moet et Chandon, Champagne Pommery (the most gorgeous Castle), and then taste with a few growers. You can taste a higher percentage of Pinot Noir champagne in Mt of Reims, Chardonnay champagne in Cote de Blanc and Pinot Meunier champagne in Valley of Marne! All small boutique champagne producers are about 20 minutes from Reims!

Johnny what a great Blog! Keep going! Such a good itinerary and very helpful too. Thank you ! I will follow your steps! I was between Reims or Epernay. I just have 4 nights in Paris but really wondering if I should stay overnight. YOur thoughts ?

Hi Flavia, I wouldn’t rush it and staying the night is probably unnecessary beacuse there is so much more to do and see in Paris. If you had a car, I would consider it but otherwise it’s just not as fun.

Sidney I am going to email you. Going to visit the area March 25 for a day trip from Paris .I am planning to take the train . On a budget with my niece that is studding in France. We both love Champagne. I am wondering if I should sleep there or come back to Paris as my trip is super short. 4 nights only.

This is super helpful! Do you know anything about whether or not the below website its legit?

https://www.ruedesvignerons.com/en ?

The times they have available for Moet tour/tastings are different than what Moet has on its site, but this website doesn’t require any payment to “book”. The time available on https://www.ruedesvignerons.com/en is 10:30, which most closely matches your itinerary and is preferable for us.

Any insight on the best booking practices would be helpful–thanks!

Are these venues open in Epernay the week of Thanksgiving? Thank you Cindy

Yes they should be!

Are these venues in Epernay open the week of thanksgiving? Thank you Cindy

OMG, you just made my day! Going to Paris with my high school friends to celebrate our 50th birthdays and we want to go the champagne region. I’ve been before, but on an organized tour. While nice, it was unnecessary. We live in CA and have done plenty of wine tastings. This will get us to the area to do things on our own. Thanks soooo much ????

Amazing glad it could help! Will be perfect for your guys reunion! You should also check out the burgundy wine region too 🙂

This is exactly what I was looking for in regards to visiting Epernay! Was wondering what time of year you did this trip?

Hi kelsey! Glad you like it! I went in June

This seems a tour specifically made for me, I love champagne, this tour is like a dream came true, moet is one of my fav brands

Hi Johny. Thanks so much for this detailed post. This is exactly what I was looking for. Wanted to check one thing. Are there are any bus or train options between Epernay and Hautviller or can anyone go from Paris directly to Hautvillers.

Hi arpita, hautvillers is a pretty small village and there’s no busses that I know of. There’s definitely not a Train station there either. Hope that helps!

Hi! Thanks so much, this is really helpful. I know lots of champagne houses require you to schedule a tour in advance. Did you have to schedule any of the tastings you did in advance or were you able to just show up?

Hi Emma, I booked the tour with Moet and Chandon and that was it. THey have a nice website to reserve everything and I actually did it the evening before. ALl the other wineries in Hautvillers, we just rocked up and tasted the champagne

Thank you so much for this detailed itinerary! Exactly what I was looking for. I saw this trip on Viator but very expensive. I’m planning on going to Paris at the end of September. I’ll be going with my daughter (mother-daughter trip) 🙂 so this information is extremely helpful! I think we could do it on our own!

Glad it was helpful! I too thought the same thing when I looked for guided tours to the region. Enjoy your trip!

Seriously, all this is amazing. Thank you so much. I am a timid traveler and this made me feel 100% more confident about venturing out to Champagne land on my own. Question: you may have mentioned it, but what month did you visit? We are planning to go at the end of May on a Wednesday. Also, is there a website to book that high speed train you spoke about from Gare De L’est to Epernay? Or Should we go to the station a few days before and purchase like that?

Glad to be of help erynn! We went in mid June and we also booked tickets from the French SNCF main website beforehand and picked it up at the Gare. It is better to book in advance as it will be much cheaper

Thank you for all the information-the research was getting to be a drag, but you made it all neat and tidy 🙂 Quick question, do you speak French? I love the idea of taking the cab to the vineyards…I too envisioned sipping bubbles looking at rolling vineyards, but I don’t speak the language and I am a bit hesitant not being able to communicate once we get to the smaller towns… thoughts?

Hi Leah, glad you found it helpful! I do speak French but it is not required because most of those wineries speak English to some degree. Worst case just tell your cabbie hautvillers s’il vous plait and he will drop you off at the town square! Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for this write up. Exactly what I was looking for after much googling fatigue

Thank you! glad it helped out.

Johnny Thanks for the details. I don’t really like the organized tours and your detailed outline for a day trip is incredible. With that said I hope to add this to my Paris trip itinerary.

Hi Rhea! Glad you liked the itinerary. I also agree that it is totally doable on your own and for a fraction of the price. Those tours really take advantage of the name to overcharge their customers!

Thank you so much for your recommendations! My Husband and I are planning a day trip to Champagne from Paris at the beginning of June. Can’t wait!

Thanks Bethany! You will have a great time there. Enjoy!

Hi, thanks for this ! Really helpful !

Do you need to prebook the tour ?

Hey Kenneth, are you talking about the Moet tour? Yes I prebooked it and would recommend to as well as they book up pretty quickly. I booked my tour the night before if that helps.

Yes. That’s right. Shall do the same. Thanks !

FINALLY!! I have read soooo many guides on wine tasting in Champagne and always left the site with more questions than I had coming in. This is the only guide I need and answers everything I have been looking for! Thank you thank you thank you!!

Can’t wait for my trip in July! 🙂

Thanks Monique! I felt the same way when researching it like you did and that is why I wrote it 🙂 Enjoy!

Hi Johnny, which link did you book the Moet tour tickets on and what did they cost? I’m planning to do the tour tomorrow

Hey Marco, I booked it on moets official website for €25.

This is exactly what i wanted to know. Thank you for all the details! Your information is great.

No problem! Hope you enjoy your trip there!

Could you include a summary of all costs? I.e. of each train, taxi, tour and a total?

Hi Nicole, the train was about €50 rt per ticket. Taxi was €15 one way between epernay and hautvillers. Moet and chandon tour was €25 per person. Tastings at various wineries was €4 to €6 per glass. In total I would budget €100 per person for everything. Hope that helps!

Hi, thanks for your detailed breakdown! Is that 100Euro per person including the Lunch as well? Also, are the Taxi’s freely available there in both Epernay and Hautvillers. I would also like to know if all the tastings you done are within in walking distance from each other in each town?

Hi Marco, 100 euros per person sounds about right for the whole day. Lunch is obviously whatever you want to spend. You can get kebabs for €5 if you wanted. As for taxis, they are pretty readily available but you just need to go into the information center and have them call one. I found it quite simple. And yes, the tastings are all walking distance, the only taxi we took was between epernay and hautvillers. Enjoy!

Thank you for your detailed suggestions. Yes, there aren’t many websites that made recommendations like yours. Truly appreciated.

Thank you! Glad you found it useful

Hello thank you for this great info I will be going there in March.

Hi!! Thanks so much for the information! Quick question: how did you get from the train station in Espernay to the Moet and Chandon cellar? Is it walking distance?

Hi jeanisha! Yes it is very easy and quick from the train station to the moet and Chandon cellar. 10 minutes walking at the most. The town is very small so if you do get lost, people will for sure be able to point the way! Enjoy the visit!

Great post! Thanks for the helpful tips for making this trip.

Glad you enjoyed! thanks.

The most ideal time to visit Champagne would be in August, where you’ll find respite from the heat in the cool champagne cellars! Another great time would be to go just after the harvest is complete and the fall colors are still intact. Your cheapest option would be to go in the winter, and you’d save a bunch on lodging. But most champagne houses are closed in winter and the weather is dull, so this is not recommended.

Day Trip To Champagne: Tips, Guidelines & More

paris to champagne_tips

  • Travel: If you decide to travel from Paris to Champagne by yourself, the easiest way to do so is to take the train. Both the major points of the region, Reims and Épernay, are accessible via the train. Trains ply back and forth quite frequently, so don’t worry about missing your train.
  • Stick to the basics: If this is your first time in the area, do not be too ambitious. Champagne is made up of 5 small areas, but stick to Reims and/or Épernay- they are the major points in Champagne and can be reached easily by train.
  • Do your research: If you opt for a self-guided tour, you may be overwhelmed by the sheer number of champagne houses you come across. To avoid wasting time, do your research and decide which ones to visit before you embark on this journey.
  • Decide which regions you want to visit: Champagne consists of at least five different regions. Even though these regions are relatively small in size, it would not be possible to cover each and every region in a single trip. Therefore, if you opt for a self-guided tour, make sure that you do your research beforehand.
  • Drink like the locals do: Remember the three steps of alcohol tasting: swirl, sniff, and sip to identify the flavors.
  • Carry a few snacks: Wine tasting in Champagne is not like wine tasting in Napa Valley. Wineries usually invite guests to drink, relax, and eat. In Champagne, however, most wineries do not offer food, which could be problematic when you've been drinking all day. Carry light snacks with you on your trip to munch on throughout the day.
  • What to wear: Most tours of the region include trips to the underground caves where champagne is aged. While this makes for a very interesting experience, make sure that you dress comfortably. These caves can get quite cold, so don’t forget to carry a light jacket or shrug with you.
  • When to visit: If you are looking to beat the crowd, you should avoid the harvest season (late summer) at all costs. The months of October and November would be ideal as you get to avoid the throng of tourists while still being able to enjoy the vineyards.

Where To Stay in Paris on a Girls’ Trip

The city center is the best area of Paris to stay in on a girls’ trip. Neighborhoods like the 7th arrondissement, Le Marais, the Latin Quarter, and Saint-Germain-des-Prés are ideal places. It’s a good idea to find a hotel that suits everyone’s budget so you have more to spend exploring the city.

Assuming high-ticket options like Hôtel de Crillon are out of the question but you still want a little luxury, check out Hotel Brighton and Le Narcisse Blanc Hôtel & Spa .

Hotel Brighton teams elegant decor with modern amenities and is in a prime location near Place de la Concorde and Jardin des Tuileries. Le Narcisse Blanc Hôtel & Spa is a five-star boutique hotel and the perfect way to squeeze in some spa time.

Some mid-range options without compromising on comfort are the Chouchou Hotel and Hôtel Duquesne Eiffel . They’re both modern, stylish, and centrally located. Hôtel Duquesne Eiffel even offers an Eiffel Tower view!

How To Get Around Paris on a Girls’ Trip

Some attractions are only a short walk away, but Paris is a big city with unpredictable weather in the off-season. Luckily, Paris has efficient and convenient metro and regional train services.

There are also buses and trams but you shouldn’t need to use those. Tickets are currently €1.90 per single journey across the Paris metro system, bus network, and local trains.

Although hopping in a taxi isn’t always the best option considering the city’s traffic, it might not be as expensive as you think. Especially if you’re a big group on a girls’ trip to Paris! It’s a great way to arrive in style at the opera house and to avoid walking on the cobblestoned streets of Paris in your best heels. Grab a cab recommendation from your hotel and keep their business card in your purse.

Things To Do on a Girls’ Trip to Paris

1. check out the famous paris museums.

Let’s face it, you can’t miss visiting the top museums in Paris if it’s your first time in the city. Regardless of whether you’re visiting with girlfriends or your entire family! The museums and galleries in Paris contain some of the most valuable and important artwork and artifacts in the world.

The Louvre Museum is a must-visit. Housed in a former palace with an iconic pyramid-shaped entrance, you can see the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, the Venus de Milo sculpture, and 380,000 other historic exhibits. However, the Louvre suffers from super long lines year-round. Unless you and your besties want to stand and wait, a better way to visit the Louvre is to book a skip-the-line tour of the highlights.

Another essential museum stop is the Musée d’Orsay . It’s a 19th and 20th-century European art museum located in a former railway station. Check out works by Van Gogh, Manet, Monet, and more as well as stand on the other side of the museum’s famous big clock.

If you have a little bit of time to spare, some other museums to check out on your girls’ trip to Paris include Musée Rodin or Musee de l’Orangerie .

2. Shop at the Top Paris Malls and Boutiques

Paris is a great place for shopping (perhaps the best, aside from Milan and New York). It’s a rite of passage to spend the last day of your girls’ trip to Paris struggling to fit all of your new purchases in your suitcase. There’s something for everyone in Paris whether you love haute couture or hunting for bargains.

On the high end of the spectrum, there are the French fashion houses on the Champs-Élysées. This street runs from the Arc de Triomphe to Place de la Bastille and is where you’ll find Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Dior.

You should also check out the beautiful Art Nouveau Galeries Lafayette department store which sells everything from skincare to toys, and designer brands. It’s a must-visit during the holiday season for its spectacular decorations!

Fans of local fruit and vegetable markets which also sell antiques and flowers should head to Marché Monge or Marché d’Aligre. Rue Mouffatard known for al fresco shopping stalls. The Le Marais neighborhood is filled with retro boutiques like The Parisian Vintage and Tragic Vintage Store.

3. Join a Paris City Tour With Context Travel

On the first day of your girls’ trip to Paris, book a city tour with a local tour guide from Context Travel. This  perfect half-day city tour  is an informative yet fun way to get to know the city and see lots of top attractions like the Eiffel Tower, and Notre Dame Cathedral, bridges like Pont des Arts, and neighborhoods like the Latin Quarter.

By traveling as a group, booking a private tour can be pretty cost-effective. Next time you all visit on a girls’ trip to Paris together, you’ll know the city like locals!

Other private tours we recommend

  • City walking tour WithLocals
  • Private Paris Segway Tour with Fat Tire Tours
  • Paris City Highlights by Vintage Sidecar with Get Your Guide
  • Private City Tour with Driver and Official Guide with Viator
  • Highlights of Paris with Tours by Locals

4. Evening Dinner Cruise on the River Seine

Another tour to make time for on your Paris girls’ trip is a Seine River Cruise. This storied river stretches right through the heart of Paris and the only thing that could make it more enjoyable is by  booking a dinner cruise  with a glass of wine or champagne at the end of the day around sunset.

Paris is gorgeous at night, particularly with the Eiffel Tower lit up. You’ll also be able to sail under Paris’s famous bridges like Pont Neuf and Pont Alexandre III and the islands of île Saint-Louis and île de la Cité.

5. Day Trip to Versailles

Versailles is only a stone’s throw from Paris and another must visit on a girls’ trip to Paris. The 17th-century Palace of Versailles is one of the most opulent, extravagant, and famous royal residences in the world, but there’s so much more to see in this beautiful city.

You can take a regional RER trail from several Paris stations including Gare du Nord to Versailles and then join a tour. Book a private tour or a  Fat Bike Tour  if you’re visiting Versailles any time from spring to fall.

Traveling through Versailles by bike is so much easier than you might think, so don’t worry if one or two of you haven’t ridden a bike in years! You’ll get to visit way more places than if you were on foot the entire day.

The Fat Bike Tour includes the Notre Dame Market, Marie Antoinette’s Hamlet, the Trianon pleasure palaces, and, of course, the Palace of Versailles and a chunk of its 2,000+ acres.

6. Witness the Iconic Views of Paris

Paris is beautiful whether you’re walking along its quaint streets with 19th-century townhouses or from a viewpoint. And Paris has some amazing viewpoints that you should all check out during your girls’ weekend!

One of the most obvious views is from the top of the Eiffel Tower which is the highest structure in Paris. But all the best vistas in Paris  include  a view of the Eiffel Tower which is impossible when you’re standing on it!

Head to the Arc de Triomphe, Montparnasse Tower, the Ferris Wheel at Place de la Concorde, or the Sacre Coeur Basilica in the Montmartre neighborhood which is one of the highest points in the city for epic photos.

7. Take a French Cooking Class

Indulging in French cuisine, wine, and sweet treats is one of the best parts of visiting Paris with your friends! One of the best ways to sample the best food the city has to offer is to take a food tour, patisserie lessons, or cooking classes. Luckily,  La Cuisine Paris  offers all three.

If you’re all chefs in the making, take a technical class on mastering French sauces. But if you’re more adept at the art of dining than cooking, choose a class where you can shop for seasonal products at a market or grocery store and turn them into a four-course meal you eat afterward. Bon appétit!

8. Day Trip to the Loire Valley or Champagne or Giverny

Spending a week or more in Paris with your besties? Lucky you! If you’ve already visited Versailles and don’t have anything planned for the next day, you have lots of options. You could visit the Loire Valley wine region, the Champagne region outside of Reims, or the village of Giverny. There are plenty of private tour options for all three of these top Paris day trip destinations.

Enjoy wine tastings with nibbles and tours of vineyards and wine cellars in the Loire Valley or in the Champagne region. Make sure you have enough room in your suitcase to bring back a bottle of wine or five! Or, explore the gardens where Monet painted his famous waterlilies in Giverny and the Museum of Impressionism.

Suggested day tours

  • Day trip to Loire Valley
  • Day trip to Champagne
  • Day trip to Giverny

9. Catch a Burlesque or Opera Performance

Pack your best dresses and head out for a night on the town. Make it extra special by booking tickets for the  Féerie Revue Show  at the Moulin Rouge Cabaret or a performance at the Palais Garnier Opera House. Prepare to be whisked back in time and enjoy French history through song, dance, and spectacle!

10. Stroll in the Beautiful Paris Parks

If you think Parisian streets are pretty, you haven’t seen anything until you’ve strolled through a park or two. They are the perfect place for you to all enjoy a casual, al fresco lunch in warm weather courtesy of a nearby boulangerie and delicatessen!

Sprawling 17th-century parks like Jardin des Tuileries, Jardin du Luxembourg , and Parc Des Buttes-Chaumont are perfect for picnics. Enjoy strolling through Place des Vosges, the oldest planned square in Paris, along the Canal Saint-Martin, or next to the Left Bank of the Seine.

11. Book a Professional Photoshoot with Flytographer

Let’s be honest, this girls’ trip to Paris has probably been a long time coming! Everyone has such hectic lives these days that it can be difficult to plan a trip together, so you want to make this one count. While selfies and photos taken by strangers are okay for most trips, you should hire a professional photoshoot for special vacations like this one.

Book a professional vacation photographer in Paris  via Flytographer, a database of skilled photographers around the world. They know all the best places to take photos near the Eiffel Tower and all the most photogenic spots around Paris. They will ensure you have stellar photos to post on social media and for you to look back on over the years.

12. Sip Cocktails in the Best Parisian Bars

No weekend in Paris with your girlfriends is complete without tasting all the best French cocktails in all the best Parisian bars. Le Perchoir , Terrass Hotel ‘s rooftop bar, and Le Louxor are three of the best rooftop bars in the city. But for the tastiest drinks, Cambridge Public House, Sister Midnight , and Bar Nouveau are the hot spots.

13. Join a Haunted Tour of the Catacombs

Descend 131 steps and head 65 ft underground to experience a unique tour of the Paris Catacombs. It’s a labyrinthine burial ground filled with human remains built for religious practices although it’s now open to the public. Book a group ticket for an hour-long semi-private tour of this haunting place and see a different side to the glitz and glam of Paris above ground.

14. Visit Sainte-Chapelle (Near Notre Dame)

With Notre Dame Cathedral closed until the end of 2024, you and your girlfriends should check out another of Paris’s most beautiful and historic churches only a 10-minute walk away. Sainte-Chapelle is a 14th-century Gothic chapel with the most impressive panels of stained glass windows.

15. Explore Les Passages Couverts

If the stores on the Champs-Élysées or in Galleries Lafayette aren’t enough to satiate the shopping habits of you and your besties, check out Les Passages Couverts. These are 19th-century covered shopping arcades which are now mostly home to antique, vintage, and small gift stores.

With tiled floors and wrought iron gates, they’re also incredibly pretty! There are 25 Les Passages Couverts remaining, but some of the best are Passage du Grand Cerf, Passage des Panoramas (the oldest), and Passage Jouffroy.

Where To Eat in Paris on a Girls’ Trip

Paris is the best city for delicious meals and bottles of incredible French wine shared with girlfriends. Whether you’re in the mood for a quintessential French tasting menu, cute local cafés and boulangeries, or something different then you’ll find it all and more.

Pink Mamma is your go-to place for Italian cuisine, although you’d be forgiven if you thought it was a greenhouse from the exterior. It pairs first-class dishes with high windows and a homey feel.

Le Train Bleu at Gare de Lyon is a hot spot for classic French cuisine complete with gilded chandeliers and frescoes that wouldn’t look out of place in a cathedral.

Le Refuge des Fondus is a popular place for meat and cheese fondue which has a cozy communal cellar feel, whereas Girafe Paris is the polar opposite. It’s an upmarket seafood restaurant with a terrace offering stunning views of the Eiffel Tower during spring and summer.

And if you’re celebrating a special occasion on your girls’ trip to Paris, you have to dine at Origines . It’s a Michelin-starred restaurant near the Champs-Élysées serving contemporary French dishes.

If you’re used to winging your meals when you travel, it’s a good idea to make reservations on your girls’ trip to Paris. It’s always harder to find tables for bigger groups. Most restaurants have booking forms on their website or reach out via Facebook or Instagram if you don’t want details to get lost in translation over the phone.
