DEACON BLUE @ UTLITA ARENA, BIRMINGHAM 20/09/2023
Deacon Blue has just started to play “Real Gone Kid.” I look around the arena, and it’s a sea of people smiling, singing, and dancing.
It underscores a thought I’ve had for decades. There’s only one way you can do it almost 40 years after your debut record: write songs that connect and play them very well.
Rewind a couple of hours, and the support act arrives. Deacon Blue is the perfect opener for Deacon Blue. A 40-minute acoustic set gave us a chance to hear different versions of old favorites. “S.H.A.R.O.N” is lovely, and the accordion on “Chocolate Girl” is absolutely superb.
The more laid-back vibe of this support set gives Ricky Ross the chance to explain the thoughts behind the music. “Cover From The Sky,” he reasons, is from his love of Gram Parsons and his belief that the greatest songs have three chords. It’s beautiful.
Elsewhere, “Looks Like Spencer Tracy Now” benefits from the approach, but “Homesick” comes in with a palpable sense of regret.
Ross had said in the set, “You know when boy bands sit down, and you know they’re gonna stand up. That’ll be us in the second half.” He’s not wrong, to be fair. They are charged up, almost like Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band in places. Ross is the rock ‘n’ roll preacher, and Birmingham is his flock, if you will.
“Wages Day,” with its Stones-esque piano and proper lead guitar, kick-starts part 2, but “Bethlehem Begins” and “Twist And Shout” (which is followed by the Beatles song of the same name) exemplify the quality on offer here.
“Loaded” (which Ross terms a ‘song of solidarity’) dips back to the first album, written at the height of Thatcher’s 80s. That it sounds so pertinent in 2023 says much about Tory Britain.
“When Will You (Make My Telephone Ring)” shows the way that Ross and Lorraine McIntosh (his wife of over 30 years) sing the songs unlike anyone else does. And they always have, too, as “Raintown,” the debut album’s title track, and “That’s What We Can Do” includes lengthy band intros.
If that brings the main set to an end, then we’re nowhere near done. “Peace Will Come” is dedicated to some audience members who are struggling, and that sense of empathy is present all the way through “Dignity” too. One of the finest songs ever made, it’s an incredible study of working-class dreams.
It’s followed by another big hit, “Fergus Sings The Blues,” but oddly, it’s a cover that best sums the night up. They sign off with a simply beautiful “Keep Me In Your Heart,” the Warren Zevon song. It brings it back full circle too, as they play it acoustically and with a real sense of warmth.
The tour was billed as “All The Old 45s,” named, of course, after a line in what might be their most famous song and the one that started this review.
If we may paraphrase the line that follows, here – for both the band and the audience – they clearly meant everything.

Deacon Blue are a band hailing from Glasgow, Scotland who formed in 1985. Since their debut, the band have released eight studio albums and have become one of the most beloved cult acts to ever come from the Scottish indie scene.
Normally, if one was to hear about a band fronted by an ex-school teacher and named after a Steely Dan song, the understandable reactions would be to instinctively write off that band as utterly insufferable before one has ever heard any of their music. However, to write off Deacon Blue would be a grave error indeed, no matter what the circumstances of their formation might be. Said ex-school teacher is the band's singer and Dundee, Scotland native Ricky Ross, who put the band together after moving from to Glasgow to pursue a solo career in music. After his debut album “So Long Ago” failed to make the earth move, he put the band together in 1985, and by 1987 the band had released their debut album “Raintown” on Columbia Records.
The next seven years of the band's career were incredibly kind to them, with several hit singles on both the UK and Ireland's singles charts, along with four critically and commercially successful albums to their name. Their second effort, 1989's “When The World Knows Your Name” was especially huge, topping the album charts and sending five of its singles into the top 30 of the singles chart, including a top ten hit in the form of its lead single “Real Gone Kid”. The band capped off the campaign for that album by headlining “The Big Day”, a free concert at Glasgow Green where the band played to an estimated quarter of a million people.
The band were on top of the world, and gaining momentum at an astonishing rate until 1994, when the band's drummer Dougie Vipond left the band to pursue a career in television. The band split amicably soon afterwards, but would reform five years later for a reunion concert in 1999, and then release a new album in the form of the same year's “Walking Back Home”. The band remain active to this day, releasing hugely acclaimed albums to a devoted following of fans both old and new. For staying relevant and exciting thirty years after forming, Deacon Blue come highly recommended.
Live reviews
Glasgow Scotland natives Deacon Blue have been doing their stadium anthemic rock since 1985, having released six studio albums to date. They’ve had their music feature on soundtracks and a number over TV advertisements over the years. They achieved their first top ten single with “Real Gone Kid” in 1988 when it peaked at number 8 in the chart. They open this evening with “Real Gone Kid”, there is delay on the guitars as the lights go from dark to light, illuminating the stage. The famous octave piano sounds at the start, and then the hit hats come in, setting the pace for the rest of the song. After a “two, three, four”, bellowed by front man Ricky Ross, the bouncing of the audience begins, followed by the chorus of joining in with that distinctive falsetto “Oooo” hook that repeats in the opening of this song. There is a huge sing along when it comes to songs such as “Fergus Sings the Blues” and “Chocolate Girl”. Their cover of Burt Bacharach and David Song’s “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again” is a surprising but intimate moment between Ross, his left hand woman and wife Lorraine McIntosh and the audience.
When they launch into “Fergus Sings the Blues”, they sing the chorus and the whole audience join in singing at the top of their lungs. Singer, Ross takes a step back from the microphone before starting the song to just take in the amazing audience reaction. The set, rightly so turned into a mutual appreciation society between the audience and the band.

Last night of their tour and it more than excelled all expectations...starting with “I was right and you were wrong.” With a bit of the Raintown album thrown in. Alongside a couple of songs from “A new house” album. A few old favourites and a few mash ups thrown in for good measure. Playing over 2:20 minutes.... playing 26 songs in total ... “Dignity, twist and shout, and Fergus” at the end. Finishing with “Always on my mind.” Fab night, sang every song, left with a hoarse voice, but well worth it!!!
What a stonking good show this was. Ricky is very much an entertainer as well as a singeing songwriter and his wife Lorraine has a hell of a good voice.
I first saw D&B 2 years ago and was not sure if the live show would be any good or not because I have a few of there albums but would not have described my self as a dedicated fan. I was very wrong then and nothing has changed since I last saw them in 2014 and I will with out doubt look forward to seeing them in 2017 so long as they are touring, I will be there. 5*
Fantastic show from Deacon Blue on Sunday night. The venue was brimming with an excited crowd eager to see the band after decades away from our shores. all the classic songs were delivered with gusto and the crowd never failed to push the band higher.
Awesome night. Highlights were:
Real gone Kid - for the Aussies in the audience
Fergus Sings the Blues
Great show.
great concert with a mixture of old and new songs, however the experience was slightly tainted by the number of drunk people in the audience. It was so bad that Ricky Ross had to tell one woman to pipe down!! I blame the venue who must have wanted to make as much money as possible and paid little regard to the enjoyment of the majority of the audience.
The concert was a great experience, the band played loads of familiar songs as well as some of their newer ones, but all were brilliant. Great atmosphere, good audience participation and great value for money, would definitely go to see them again. Altogether a great night out.
Fab night with a band who just get better & better with time. These guys know how to put on a show. Wonderful atmosphere, a real celebration of life, love and friendship. I think the tour is sold out in many places but if you get the chance of tickets, grab it !
Outstanding concert at Glasgow Hydro on Saturday night. Great mix of old favourites and newer songs. Last saw them in London in the 1980s and the voices, sound, performance and connection with the crowd every bit as good as then. Keep gigging guys - please!!
Hadn't seen Deacon Blue in concert since 1999! Had an amazing time. New material was great and old classics like Dignity, Loaded, Wages Day and Real Gone Kid. Can't wait to see them again. Faultless performance by the band, a must see for any old or new fan.
Words cannot say how it went , Deacon blue are one of the best bands, that you could ever see. As every song is a treasure, and would tell all that you would be silly not go to see them. If I had the money I would go to all their gigs.

LIVE: Deacon Blue – Utilita Arena, Birmingham, 20/09/2023
35 years on from their first UK Top 40 hit and almost 30 years past their most recent, Deacon Blue have hung onto a huge proportion of their fan base, to such an extent that their greatest hits tour, in place to promote their new All The Old 45s collection, is an arena tour taking in the likes of tonight’s venue, Birmingham’s Utilita Arena (formerly the NIA).
The programme for tonight is to be two Deacon Blue sets; an acoustic ‘support’ section followed by a full electric set. The six-piece band takes to the stage to a backdrop of moving trains and urban imagery and gathers closely to deliver a short a capella section of their ‘Wages Day’ hit before a slightly countrified ‘Queen Of The New Year’ complete with double bass and brushed drums takes the show up a notch. The first set includes a trio of songs from their beloved Raintown debut, including the lovely ‘ Chocolate Girl ‘ single before which singer Ricky Ross jokes “Thank you very much, the main act will be along in a minute” . The band still includes the brilliant Jim Prime on keyboards, but Ross at times shows off his own considerable skills on piano too, as fellow singer Lorraine McIntosh similarly adds acoustic guitar to her contribution. Ross and McIntosh have fronted the band together now for almost four decades and they come across as genuinely appreciative of their position and audience, at times mentioning individual fans by name.
The acoustic set perhaps allows a couple of lesser known songs to be performed, such as the title track of their slightly under the radar 2001 album ‘Homesick’ which closes out that section of the show.
After the break, Ross bounds back onto the stage and requests that the audience stand for the electric set, which begins with the upbeat ‘The Hipsters’ (from the 2012 album of the same name), during which he then gives the audience an audacious objective to make tonight “the best night of their lives!” . ‘Wages Day’ returns in its full version and the band’s own song “Twist and Shout’ is made into a medley with an Isley Brothers song (if I tell you it was also covered by The Beatles , you might work it out!). The band’s second single, and perhaps their best, ‘Loaded’ , (and no, it’s not presented in a medley with anything by Primal Scream ), is previewed via a Ross monologue that explains the meaning of the song, (essentially a socialist anthem about those with and those without), and a touching tribute to original guitarist Graham Kelling who very sadly passed away in 2004, aged just 47.
The big hits are mainly here, the melancholy of old favourite ‘When Will You Make My Telephone Ring?’ , the ebullient ‘Real Gone Kid’ , as well as fan favourite album cuts such as the beautifully downbeat Raintown title track and the far more upbeat ‘City Of Love’ , from their 2020 record of the same name. ‘Love and Regret’ is maybe the least known of the five big hits played tonight from the band’s commercial high water mark album When The World Knows Your Name , but seems to be a real fan favourite on this evidence.
The voices of McIntosh and Ross are entirely undimmed by the passage of time, or indeed the two-hour-plus set tonight. There’s a four song encore, with a couple of the band’s most well-known songs, a roof-raising run through ‘Dignity ’ of course, and ‘Fergus Sings The Blues’ sandwiched between a couple of slower songs: the affecting ballad ‘Peace Will Come’ and the eventual closer, a cover of Warren Zevon ’s equally poignant ‘Keep Me In Your Heart’ , with Ross joking that “This is the moment when the party’s really finished, but there’s one old Scottish guy sitting in the kitchen boring the hell out of you!” The band take turns singing lines from the song and it’s a beautifully hopeful way to send the very appreciative Birmingham crowd home.

Thirty-five years since their debut single, Dignity, and millions of record sales since, Deacon Blue are digging out all their old 45s – the Top 10s, the favourites, the sing-a-long rarities – and touring the UK & Ireland in September / October 2023. The band have always thrived onstage, but they’ve never played gigs quite like this: they’ll perform two sets, with no support. The first half will be an intimate acoustic show, and then they’ll go electric for a raucous trip across their hits.
Vocalist and songwriter Ricky Ross is raring to go on this celebration of Deacon Blue’s brilliant and loyal fans, roaring the Caledonian gospel from the South Coast to the Uplands. “We’ve decided to play a Greatest Hits show with a difference,” he says.“ Yes, we intend to play all (or nearly all) the old 45s, but we also want the first half of the evening to be an intimate acoustic performance, the band gathered round the piano with acoustic guitars and whatever Dougie decides to hit. We’ll play some album tracks and reinterpret a few favourites from the back catalogue. We’ll take a short break then come back and make a lot of noise. We hope you can be part of that noise.”
Kicking off in the birthplace of pop (as Ross’s recent memoir attests, everything comes back to The Beatles), the tour will launch in Liverpool – which has long held a special place in the band’s collective heart – before travelling the length of the land. Ross, co-vocalist Lorraine McIntosh, Dougie Vipond (drums), Jim Prime (keyboards), Gregor Philp (guitar) and Lewis Gordon (bass) will breathe new life into well-loved songs like Dignity, Loaded, Wages Day, Real Gone Kid, I’ll Never Fall In Love Again, Your Swaying Arms, Twist & Shout, Your Town, The Hipsters and City Of Love. And so many more.

Thirty-five years since their debut single, Dignity, and millions of record sales since, Deacon Blue are digging out all their old 45s - the Top 10s, the favourites, the sing-a-long rarities - and heading on tour, stopping off at Utilita Arena Newcastle on Sunday 17th September 2023.
The band have always thrived onstage, but they’ve never played gigs quite like this: they’ll perform two sets, with no support. The f irst half will be an intimate acoustic show , and then they’ll go electric for a raucous trip across their hits.
Vocalist and songwriter Ricky Ross is raring to go on this celebration of Deacon Blue’s brilliant and loyal fans, roaring the Caledonian gospel from the South Coast to the Uplands. He said: “ We ’ve decided to play a Greatest Hits show with a difference,” he says. “Yes, we intend to play all (or nearly all) the old 45s, but we also want the first half of the evening to be an intimate acoustic performance, the band gathered round the piano with acoustic guitars and whatever Dougie decides to hit. We ’ll play some album tracks and reinterpret a few favourites from the back catalogue. We ’ll take a short break then come back and make a lot of noise. We hope you can be part of that noise.”
Ricky Ross, co-vocalist Lorraine McIntosh, Dougie Vipond (drums), Jim Prime (keyboards), Gregor Philp (guitar) and Lewis Gordon (bass) will breathe new life into well-loved songs like Dignity, Loaded, Wages Day, Real Gone Kid, I’ll Never Fall In Love Again, Your Swaying Arms, Twist & Shout, Your Town, The Hipsters and City Of Love. And so many more.
