UConn Star Donovan Clingan Says Biden Was 'Out of It' During WH Visit - 'Couldn't Understand What He Was Saying'

B ehind the grins there were some grimaces when the University of Connecticut’s national championship basketball team visited the White House last year, according to center Donovan Clingan.

The team made the traditional visit on May 26 , where President Joe Biden gushed over the team’s achievements.

In comments made on Caleb Feemster’s podcast, Clingan said there was a side the public and the cameras never saw, according to TownHall .

“Last year, after winning our national championship we went to the White House and took a picture with Joe Biden , team picture,” Clingan said.

“Joe Biden talked to us for about three minutes, and then right after that he asked us for a picture again,” he said.

Police clad in riot gear swarmed Yale University’s Connecticut campus early Monday and arrested dozens of students who refused to clear out from an anti-Israel protest encampment .

At least 47 protesters were cuffed and hauled away from the Ivy League’s New Haven campus on shuttle buses, a university spokesperson confirmed to The Post.

They were slapped with trespassing summons — and will be referred for Yale disciplinary action, which may include suspensions, the rep added.

The mass arrests came after footage posted online showed cops arriving at the Ivy League school and blocking off entrances to a plaza, where roughly 200 protesters had been gathered.

Cops repeatedly warned protesters they risked being arrested if they didn’t clear out, the Yale spokesperson said.

As police descended on the campus, a group of defiant students had locked arms around a flagpole and were singing “We shall not be moved” — as officers could be seen checking the dozens of tents erected in the plaza, according to a video posted on X.

While the arrests were underway, others could be heard taunting the Yale Police Depatment (YPD), “YPD or KKK, IDF they’re all the same” and chanting, “Arab blood is not cheap, for the martyrs we will speak,” according to the Yale Daily News.

Cops had cleared the plaza and encampment of student protesters by about 8 a.m.

“Today, members of Yale’s police department isolated the area and asked protestors to show identification; some left voluntarily. When others did not comply after multiple requests, the Yale Police Department issued summonses to 47 students,” the spokesperson said.

“The university made the decision to arrest those individuals who would not leave the Plaza with the safety and security of the entire Yale community in mind and to allow access to university facilities by all members of our community.”

It comes after protests at Yale turned violent over the weekend when a Jewish student journalist reporting on an encampment, which was erected Friday, was stabbed in the eye with a Palestinian flag Saturday night.

Sahar Tartak, editor-in-chief of the Yale Free Press, was covering the protest when she was suddenly surrounded by demonstrators.

“There’s hundreds of people taunting me and waving the middle finger at me, and then this person waves a Palestinian flag in my face and jabs it in my eye,” Tartak told The Post.

“When I tried to yell and go after him, the protesters got in a line and stopped me.”

Yale president Peter Salovey sent students an email late Sunday warning that the school “will pursue disciplinary actions according to its policies” amid the ongoing demonstrations.

“Many of the students participating in the protests, including those conducting counterprotests, have done so peacefully. However, I am aware of reports of egregious behavior, such as intimidation and harassment, pushing those in crowds, removal of the plaza flag, and other harmful acts,” he wrote.

“Yale does not tolerate actions, including remarks, that threaten, harass, or intimidate members of the university’s Jewish, Muslim, and other communities.

“The Yale Police Department is investigating each report, and we will take action when appropriate, including making referrals for student discipline.”

The arrival of cops comes after more than 100 protesters were cuffed and hauled away when the NYPD was called in to clear out a similar protest at Columbia University last week.

Rauner Special Collections Library celebrates 25th anniversary

The four-day event series included a tour of the collections by historical accountability fellow kira parrish-penny ’24 and a keynote presentation by university of connecticut english professor regina barreca ’79..

KParrish-PennyLeadingTour.jpg

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the Rauner Special Collections Library co-hosted a four-day event series with the Book Arts Workshop and Jones Media Center. The programming, which took place from April 15 to 18, highlighted Rauner Library’s archival history, distinctive works and teaching and research opportunities.

The “Highlights of the Collections” tour, which was offered from April 16 to 18 and led by historical accountability fellow Kira Parrish-Penny ’24, explored the acquisition and history of the collection’s most famous manuscripts. The tour highlighted works including Shakespeare’s first folio and first edition copies of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” Andreas Vesalius’s “De humani corporis fabrica libri septem” and the script of Charles Reisner’s acclaimed film, “Winter Carnival.”

Both Dartmouth and Upper Valley community members attended the tour to learn about the collections. Neha Agarwal ’24 said the tour was “such a cool experience” because she was able to “look through and actually touch everything.”

Several attendees also stayed after the tour to flip through the books, hold the artifacts and ask questions about the items’ unique histories.

Keynote speaker and University of Connecticut English professor Regina Barreca ’79 said she thought the tour was “fabulous.” On April 18, Barreca gave a speech in Berry Library entitled “Whispering in the Archives: Secrets, Discoveries and the Cheerful Sanctity of Shared Experience.” The presentation explored Rauner Library as “a source of enlightenment” and “a powerful reminder of the sanctity of shared experience — scandalous as it may be,” according to the Rauner Library website.

Attendees also had the opportunity to use author and screenwriter Mario Puzo’s typewriter — which he used to write “The Godfather” — before their tour, according to Rauner Library’s website. Afterwards, participants could attend a book preservation showcase held in Baker-Berry Library that detailed the wide variety of treatment techniques and equipment preservation staff can use for book conservation.

On April 15 and 16, Dartmouth teaching staff also held three panels on teaching and researching with the Rauner Special Collections. The Book Arts Workshop held a “Parchment and Quill” session on writing with iron gall ink that allowed participants to practice their penmanship with a quill pen, while the Jones Media Center and Digital by Dartmouth Library team offered programming on how physical items become digitized and organized online.

Parrish-Penny was part of a student panel in Baker-Berry Library on the historical accountability student research program on April 16, along with former historical accountability fellows Anneliese Thomas ’19 and Cecelia King ’23. According to the Rauner Library website, the panelists shared their experiences conducting research at Rauner Library and the ways in which their fellowships impacted their time at Dartmouth.

In an interview with The Dartmouth, Parish-Penny said her fellowship has allowed her to work with Special Collections librarian Jay Satterfield to bring attention to Rauner Library’s hands-on learning opportunities and help students take advantage of the collections available to them. She said Satterfield asked her to lead the tours due to her prior work in the library.

“I think that it’s so cool to be able to explore history with that context and be able to hold the materials that are contributing to the way that we write history and think about history,” Parrish-Penny said. “It makes the experience of learning history so much more intimate.”

In an interview with The Dartmouth, Barreca previewed the key points about her archival experiences she later made in her keynote address. She said she began documenting her life in her teenage years, a practice she continues to this day. As a first-generation, low-income student who was part of the College’s third coeducational graduating class, Barreca said she thought she would never return to the College after her “horrid and beautiful” experience here. Nonetheless, she said she has been a guest speaker at various College commemorations. In 2011, for example, she gave a presentation on her perspective of Winter Carnival based on her time as a student, according to Dartmouth News.

In 2011, Barreca published “Babes in Boyland: A Personal History of Co-Education in the Ivy League” — a critical text that offers readers an insight into the College’s early years of coeducation and details the ways in which Barreca said she, a first-generation, low-income woman, differed from the “average” Dartmouth student.

Artifacts from Barreca’s time at Dartmouth — including academic assignments, handwritten letters, sketches from friends, menus from restaurants in Hanover and fortune cookie remnants from local Chinese restaurants  — will become a part of Rauner Library after her death, she said.

Barreca added that she does not believe first drafts of her work should be included in the archive, since people can read a finished copy of the book. Instead, she will include papers with what may be considered “bad grades” and rejection letters.

“I have the exams that I didn’t do well on, the drafts of papers I got B-minuses on,” she said. “I have the stuff I did well on, but I think it’s important for somebody who has made a life in the world — writing and teaching and scholarship — to say, ‘You don’t start out knowing how to do everything. You learn things, and you fail along the way.’”

Former Michigan big man Tarris Reed Jr. announces transfer destination

uconn university tour

When Connecticut begins its bid for a third straight national championship, a former Wolverine will be part of that quest.

Big man Tarris Reed Jr. announced his commitment to the Huskies in a social media post Wednesday after taking a visit to Storrs this past weekend.

Reed made the decision nearly a month after he entered the transfer portal on March 19 in the wake of Michigan’s historically awful 8-24 season and Juwan Howard’s firing .

“I chose UConn for its winning culture, commitment to player development and coaching style,” Reed told On3 . “Coach (Dan) Hurley’s tough coaching style is known for pushing players into uncomfortable situations, making the uncomfortable seem comfortable. UConn provides the ideal setting and coaching for me to maximize my potential both on and off the court.”

Reed averaged nine points, a team-high 7.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game as a sophomore, while shooting 51.9% from the field and 58.6% from the free-throw line. The 6-foot-10 big man was one of two Wolverines to appear in all 32 games, with 31 starts.

As the lone true center on Michigan’s roster this past season, Reed also saw his playing time double — from 12.6 minutes as a freshman to 26.6 minutes in Year 2 — as he stepped into a full-time starter role following Hunter Dickinson’s transfer to Kansas.

During Reed’s two years in Ann Arbor, the former four-star recruit averaged 6.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks and made 31 starts in 66 career games.

At UConn, Reed will join a Huskies team that finished 37-3, won the Big East regular-season and tournament titles and completed a dominant NCAA Tournament run — with each win coming by at least 14 points — to repeat as national champs .

He’ll also look to fill another major void after the departure of another talented big man. This time, he’ll help replace Donovan Clingan, a cornerstone of UConn’s back-to-back championship teams who declared for the NBA Draft last week.

Reed has two years of eligibility remaining and is the third former Wolverine to transfer, along with Dug McDaniel ( Kanas State ) and Youssef Khayat ( Bowling Green ). After George Washington III withdrew from the transfer portal last week, one more Michigan player remains in it: Terrance Williams II, who also declared for the NBA Draft.
