In pivot to digital admissions, Northwestern spirit shines through

digital admissions

  • Student Experience

Spring at Northwestern typically brings bikers along the lake, Frisbee on Deering Meadow and the sweet smells of hyacinth and lilac.

But the coronavirus pandemic has changed that.

At a time when hundreds of newly admitted students and thousands of prospective applicants normally would flood campus to take a tour, peek into a residence hall or meet a professor, the University has moved to digital admissions programming designed to accentuate the school’s core spirit and sense of community.

When news of Northwestern’s COVID-19 shutdown came in mid-March, the undergraduate  admissions  team made a quick pivot and reimagined what this programming could look like in the digital space.

“The college admissions world has always done outreach a certain way, and it relies heavily on face-to-face connection,” said Liz Kinsley, director of undergraduate admission. “I’m so proud of the entire admissions team — at a key moment, when we’d normally see the maximum number of prospective students on campus, my staff came together to create something new and great. And so many members of the wider Northwestern community have contributed, too. The quality and spirit of the pivot itself are reflective of what makes Northwestern special.”

From a guide’s POV: Emily Coffee

As a tour guide, I can honestly say the best parts of a campus tour are often those spontaneous little moments that really capture Northwestern — especially in spring.

Sometimes it’s having a friend or two wave and say “hi” to the tour group as you pass by. Sometimes it happens on a warm day when you see dozens of students hanging out on the lakefill that you were just about to talk about. And if you're really lucky, it's the third week of May when one of our fraternities grills hot dogs for a week to raise money for a philanthropy, making the whole tour smell really good.

Emily Coffee

More than not seeing the iconic spots of campus, I worried that our visitors would miss out on those chances to see the Northwestern community in those small, sometimes silly, and often seemingly inconsequential ways that could really have a large impact on their perception of campus life.

However, in all of the virtual student panels and live info sessions I've seen and been a part of, there have been other students and staff members right there with me. We're still able to play off of each other and add to the other’s stories. And we’re still able to give the students watching a better look at the ways in which each Northwestern student brings something to the table.

In a recent Instagram Live stream about religious and spiritual life on campus, I got the opportunity to answer questions with my co-worker and friend, Robby. Not only did we get to joke and laugh with each other while we struggled with our Wi-Fi, but I also got to learn a lot about his personal experiences on campus while sharing some of my own.

I think in our effort to make sure we have enough students to answer the wide variety of questions that prospective students and families might have, we also have ensured those asking the questions get to see what it looks like when Northwestern people interact and share their experiences.

Although I admit it's not quite the same, these are the moments I value most on tours. I hope that if these students get the chance to see campus, they’ll be able to connect it to those who told their stories on virtual panels and realize that the Northwestern community exists everywhere — even if we'd much rather be together.

Evanston campus

Call evanston home.

It’s not a big city. It’s not a small town. It’s a best-of-both-worlds urban suburb full of local culture, artisans and friendly faces. It’s a college town with big city amenities that makes it the perfect place to learn from the best business minds at one of the top business schools in the world.

The Evanston campus is home to our flagship building, the Global Hub, which is also where you’ll spend the majority of your time if you’re in the Full-Time MBA Program. Right next door you’ll also find the James L. Allen Center, home to one of our Executive MBA Programs as well as many non-degree Executive Education courses.

Things to do

There’s always something to do in Evanston: Take in a Big-10 sports game. Kayak the lake. Gaze at galaxies at the  Dearborn Observatory  or tour the Gross Point Lighthouse. Bike the many  interconnected miles of safe and scenic bike paths . And at the end of the day, dine out at one of hundreds of  local restaurants or brew pubs .

Places to go

Just a short train ride away is Chicago, the third-largest city in the U.S. that's famous for its music scene, architecture, world-class museums, theater productions, shopping, dining and, of course, its incredible wealth of professional sports teams. See a Bulls game and then head to a blues bar. Check out the shops and then the opera. Kick back and cheer on your favorite baseball team from the stands. Chicago has it all.

People to bring

Your MBA journey involves your entire family. In fact, nearly 40 percent of our students brings their spouse, partner or child with them as they pursue their degree. Kellogg supports this by including your Joint Ventures (as we like to call them), where spouses and partners can network, join student groups, audit classes and even go on global learning adventures with their grad-school partner. For the little ones, Kellogg Kids is one of the most active social clubs on campus. Activities include music classes, field trips, holiday parties and parent’s nights out.

Northwestern University Transfers: 2024 Requirements, Dates, GPAs & More

How effective are northwestern university virtual tours.

It depends how you use them. Northwestern University is a hustling, bustling campus and community. The beauty of Northwestern University virtual tours on CampusReel is that authentic video tours, made by real students, can be spectacular at capturing the Northwestern University vibe. We also go well beyond the confines of the Northwestern University campus by taking you around Evanston. In traditional virtual tours, you will mostly see still, unengaging images and will not see the surrounding area at all – which is why CampusReel virtual tours are so important.

Can a Northwestern University virtual tour replace a traditional in-person visit?

If you cannot visit Northwestern University in person, then we can honestly say that we believe a CampusReel virtual tour of Northwestern University is absolutely the most effective and holistic way to understand the Northwestern University people, campus and community. However, if you do plan on visiting Northwestern University and other colleges in person, we strongly recommend that you at least prescreen your college options on CampusReel before spending the time and money to visit. Most prospective families find that as soon as the step on campus, they instantly know whether or not they like the school – but they’ve already spent all that time and money getting there! Our goal is to eliminate all the time and money visiting Northwestern University in person until you can make a strong educated guess that it’s worth the investment.

What places can I virtually tour at Northwestern University?

For your convenience, below is a list of Northwestern University places you can virtually tour on CampusReel.

  • Mudd Library at Northwestern University
  • University Library at Northwestern University
  • Josephine Louis Theater at Northwestern University
  • Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University
  • Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University at Northwestern University
  • Chapin Hall (Humanities Residential College) at Northwestern University
  • Northwestern University at Northwestern University
  • Noodles and Company at Northwestern University
  • The Lakefill at Northwestern University
  • East Fairchild at Northwestern University
  • The Rock at Northwestern University
  • The Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center at Northwestern University
  • Main St at Northwestern University

What are the downsides of a Northwestern University virtual tour?

The downside of virtually touring Northwestern University on CampusReel is that, admittedly, our technology does not yet mimic the exact feeling and experience of visiting Northwestern University in person. We are working on this though! A common request we also receive from users is to add more perspectives (e.g. student guides) to the platform. Rest assured we are working on adding more CampusReel guides to the Northwestern University virtual tour. However, our selection of guides still far outweighs the available perspectives of traditional virtual tour platforms.

What are the benefits of a Northwestern University virtual tour?

The most obvious benefit of a Northwestern University virtual tour on CampusReel is that is can be accessed from anywhere. This can save families a lot of time and money compared to visiting Northwestern University in person . Another often overlooked benefit of a CampusReel virtual tour is that it goes far beyond a traditional in person tour Northwestern University . Campus visits are limited both in time and scope – how are you expected to truly understand a college in a 1 hour tour? That’s why we stress the added benefit of CampusReel virtual tours – experience Northwestern University and Evanston during different seasons, days of the week, and even hours of the day. What’s game day like? What is finals week life? Again, traditional virtual touring platforms don’t include this benefit.

Northwestern College to break ground May 9 for Bultman Center renovation

Thursday, April 25, 2024

Architect's rendering of the Bultman Center expansion

Estimated to cost more than $6 million, the project will provide new and renovated locker rooms and coaches’ offices, as well as a 140-seat team meeting room. With the addition and subsequent renovations to existing areas, teams will have their own dedicated locker rooms, and needed office spaces will be provided for assistant coaches and graduate assistants.

“This will help us better fulfill our department’s mission of honoring Christ through excellence in athletics,” says Tony Hoops , vice president for athletics. “All of our student-athletes will benefit from these improvements, as we enable teams to operate more cohesively together. I’m especially excited about what the new team meeting room can provide for athletics and the whole campus community. It will be able to be divided so it serves two teams or groups at the same time.”

More than $5.7 million has been raised for the project so far. As the athletics and advancement departments work to wrap up funding, former athletes, parents and Raider supporters are invited to consider sponsoring lockers, with each locker available for a multi-year gift of $2,500. For more information, visit nwciowa.edu/locker-campaign .

The 7,790-square-foot project has been designed by 10Fold Architecture and Engineering of Ames, Iowa, with 2000 Northwestern graduate Eric Vermeer serving as the lead architect. Construction is expected to begin in early June, with completion by the fall of 2025.

The Bultman Center was built in 1995. The first phase of renovations, completed in 2021, incorporated the new Northwestern College athletics identity and included a new gym floor and bleachers, a scorer’s table with LED screens, and updates to the lobby and hallway areas.
