East of June: A Candid Conversation

East of June, an eclectic threesome out of Los Angeles recently sat down with The Fusion Press’ Lauren Alexis Wood to talk through the Pandemic’s impact on their creative process as well as their impressive collective experience in the industry and how that’s brought them together as such a unique and ambitious band.

As soon as I sat down with Emily, Kyle and Dirk I first had to find out how they’d been getting through the pandemic. This close-knit trio thrives on a collaborate process built on an equal playing ground, each member happy when all three can settle on something collectively. I wanted to find out how the pandemic had impacted their creative process on their latest single, “Little Bird” (watch the music video HERE ).

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 9C5C4911-43E0-4DC4-A7D4-6A8BE94F453A-1024x683.jpeg

Emily spoke up first, “In terms of writing lyrics, it wasn’t too different for me. I usually like to take some time with a melody on my own first and really process it to come up with some initial ideas. When Kyle sent me the guitar melody, it brought me to this soft, sweet, melancholy place and the idea of leaving home came about because it evokes those feelings for me. The whole concept of the song was ultimately what I went through growing up.”

Kyle had been a bit more impacted by the limitations of the Pandemic. “In some regards, the writing process wasn’t much different than it usually is, in the sense that we all come up with ideas on our own and then present them to the band for feedback. The difficult part was that once we all liked an idea (like “Little Bird”) then we had to work through the song on a Zoom conference, which is not a very intimate or creative experience at all. It feels like you’re in a work meeting which fucking sucks. But we are a resilient little tribe and found a way to work through those obstacles and created a beautiful song together.“

Last but certainly not least, Dirk has not been a fan of the pandemic. “ I think the wildcard was the sense that these ideas might not get a chance to actually see the light of day. There was a period where I really didn’t know when and if I was going to see the two of them again. Can’t exactly say that hurry up and wait is particularly good for the creative process!

Next I simply had to get the scoop on the band’s formation. Dirk and Emily originally connected on Bumble (a popular dating app) and I wanted to know if they thought there could be hidden networking and professional value for creatives in something like the dating app market, or if they felt their connection was a one-in-a-million chance happening?

Kyle jumped in immediately, “Our connection was a one-in-a-zillion chance because East of June is really something special. I’ve never been a part of anything more meaningful in my life. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.”

Emily followed-up, “I say anything is possible, clearly. I think the Universe presents opportunities to us in ways we sometimes never could have predicted, but you have to be open to it. When I got that first email from Kyle out of the blue, I had no idea who he was and could have just written it off, but I said why not and responded and now here we are. So stay open-minded, people.”

I then turned to Kyle and Dirk to find out at what point they realized that their back-and-forth feedback sessions, which they’d been doing for years, would be better as a collaborative creative process?

Dirk spoke first, “I think for me it was when I realized I was thinking about the songs even when we weren’t together listening to them. I know my perspective shifted from, “oh cool”…to, “well did you ever consider…” I started buying in and getting excited about the possibilities. Frankly this whole idea came around at a time where I was not particularly interested in music. I wasn’t listening to it and I certainly wasn’t playing it, which given my past seemed to confuse a lot of my friends and family. Kyle seemed to understand it though. Maybe the whole thing was part of some master plan on his part. Sort of like luring an animal with tasty morsels? Kids, vans, candy? I’m sure there’s an appropriate analogy in there somewhere.”

Kyle chimed in next, “I honestly can’t say there was a particular moment for me. Anytime you can lean on one of your best friends for feedback about your ideas (who also happened to be in one of the biggest rock bands in the world) is a win. I think it was just the natural progression of us getting together on the weekends to spitball ideas back and forth about what some of those riffs and guitar licks could become. It was only a matter of time before he picked up the bass and was like, I got this .”

East of Eden has resisted placing themselves in a specific genre and their musical influences have been more than eclectic. I had to ask them: Do you feel you’re creating a unique sound that defines your work that could essentially be its own genre?

Emily was quick to answer, “Yes, we are the genre of East of June. We’ve always treated each song as its own little art project. It’s cool because nowadays I think more people are listening to music in ‘shuffle’ mode, or on a playlist, or by ‘mood,’ (I know I do) so you don’t even need to hit shuffle to listen to us, we are all the moods. Haha!”

Kyle also had an interesting opinion on this idea, “That’s an interesting take and I think East of June is certainly crafting its own sound as more of these songs come to light. It feels like we decided we like all the magical cereal in the cupboard and poured a little bit from each box into this big bowl. I think I can feel a sugar rush coming on…“

Lastly, Dirk explained, “If authentic music is supposed to be a reflection of who we are as individuals then it stands to reason it’s going to be eclectic. Who has the time and/or energy to try and be inspired by doing the same thing over and over again. That actually sounds exhausting to me. As a person you couldn’t sum me up in a sentence so why should the music I like to create be any different?”

Next I wanted to know if the trio felt they thrived more on stage or in the studio? I wanted to know who felt which was cathartic, the songwriting process or putting together the instrumentals and vocals to a written track?

“What the hell is a stage?” Dirk joked. “At this point that’s just something you see on a video somewhere. I know the future for us is going to be in the live presentation of our music but for the time being we have to find solace in the studio process. It’s really the chrysalis for what has yet to come when the world opens up and we can take these songs to the next level. As much as they are a snapshot of a specific moment in time, they won’t really get to come into their own until given the full live treatment.”

Kyle offered his perspective, “I love to play live, but it’s been a really long time since I performed a show until just this past Friday when we did our first livestream. For me, it’s most cathartic when the initial idea for a new song is recorded. Just that raw emotion of expressing a feeling or vibe that runs its way through my fingertips. Every now and again you’ll catch fire and know that an idea will be something special one day when all is said and done.”

Emily brought things full-circle, “I think the most cathartic moment is when we sit down and listen to a track we’ve been working on and all of a sudden everything comes together. That moment when you’re like, woah we created this awesome little song child out of literally nothing. We just recently did our first performance ever on a livestream and let’s just say we are pumped to keep performing too.”

All three members have impressive and diverse resumes, with experience and talents across the industry. Kyle, the founder and owner of creative agency New Science and former marketing director at URB Magazine. Dirk, a founding member of Incubus who’s passion project Willie’s Nerve Clinic has kept him busy for over a decade. Emily, an experienced soloist and recording artist known for her performances and airplay. I wanted to find out how they each felt their collective experiences has helped shape the band as it exists today.

Dirk was first to explain, “It’s turned me into a cynical prick if I wasn’t one before! The goal of age should be wisdom, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes you have to ground yourself by just staying open minded to new ideas, whether they’re musical or business related. Being older than Emily I do occasionally catch myself telling her about how it USED to be. Not sure that’s really productive. So instead I try and phrase things in a way about how they COULD be. Tom Hardy has a great line in the movie INCEPTION where, and I’m paraphrasing here, he says, “ you’ve got to dream bigger darling.” I like to think that’s my mantra these days.”

“We truly each bring something unique to the table.” Emily explained. “I don’t think we could have come up with some of the ideas we’ve created if we all had the same backgrounds or musical tastes. We each have moments when we adamantly see a song or part of a song completely differently, but somehow we’ve managed to get through these times and eventually agree on what is best for the song.”

Kyle agreed, “Certainly, we all bring something different to the table given our personal and professional experiences over the years. For my part, I think working behind the scenes across music, technology, and entertainment has provided us with the tools to really be buttoned up with our content, videos, and web presence. Musically we like so many different songs, genres, and artists that seems to trigger the push-and-pull in our writing process. It’s those different perspectives that makes the East of June sound what it is – very eclectic and very song driven.”

Lastly, I wanted to make sure I got the scoop on what the band has in store for fans next.

“So much more music!” Emily exclaimed. “We’re super excited to share the songs we haven’t even released and may be our best stuff yet. We’re doing a fundraiser right now actually on GoFundMe to help raise money so we can hopefully follow through with all the exciting plans we have. People can check it out here if they’re interested in donating!”

Kyle spoke up next, “We have some great songs in the arsenal that we are very proud of that nobody has heard yet. We’re excited to someday release those songs and will continue to write and record new ones along the way. At some point, we want to take this show on the road and bring the music directly to the fans. Fingers crossed that will happen sooner rather than later.”

Dirk brought our conversation to a close with some excitement and anticipation, “It’s all about the music baby. Releasing and recording. People have no idea just what’s coming.”

Breakfast was marginal in many places, a toaster would help a lot. in Videilla Tranovo Coffee was so bad as to be undrinkable, cold, strong instant. Guide was spectacular, knowledgeable, fun, organized and patient. He Made the trip. Hotels were clean and adequate for the stays. We spent most days with a tour and then free time for exploration. Transit was as done by the locals so while not great in some places, it was a fair immersion in the environment.

Wonderful cities, well-organised, and great value. Shout out to our guide, Jacob, who was as informative and professional as you'd expect, but also adaptable when things out of his control were going wrong (traffic, weather, etc.) And the driver, Nathan, who was always helpful and reliable - almost like a second tour guide.

The Best of Eastern Europe

This was a great tour made wonderful by our tour guide Zdenka. She knew these countries so well, she wanted us to see everything possible and she made it happen! Our bus driver, Gaspy, kept us safe and on time. Would recommend this tour, you learn so much and the countries visited were so beautiful and welcoming. This is the first time that Globus gave us a couple small, quirky new hotels that were not comfortable. Please Globus stick to regular hotels that have great staff. if the hotels are far from city center please give us transportation there and back on our afternoons off whenever possible.

Prague Vienna and Budapest (10 Days) Tour

Prague Vienna and Budapest (10 Days)

It was a very good trip. Prague, Vienna and Budapest are very beautiful cities and it was great to get into the museum in Vienna before it was open to the public. We also did Schonbrunn Palace early and avoided the crowds. I think the highlight for me was the Budapest evening cruise and dinner as it was just stunning and the food was excellent. We picked this tour because of the amount of free time it offered, but if you were to take up all the optional tours, there would be very little free time left for wandering these marvellous cities. We did half the tours on offer so we could head off on our own and do things that weren't on the optional list.

What people love about Eastern Europe Tours

To be honest, part of what made the trip fantastic was our group of 12- could not have had a better group to travel with- which is clearly luck, but a piece of our group being so cohesive was Nejca, our guide. She was perfect! Available but not pushy. Laid back, but willing to assert herself to make our experience the best. She made each person in the group feel special and appreciated. Thank you, Nejca! The itinerary was quite good as well. Although there were places I could have stayed for a day longer, I think it’s important to not stay too long and feel like time is wasted on a certain place on the tour. Transportation was efficient and Nejca did a great job getting us to our destinations easily and without rushing. Accommodations were very good- with the exception of Prague. Although our apartment was nice, it was clear that the residents of Prague feel that their space is being taken over by tourists- which is clearly true. I would have preferred to have stayed in a hotel in Prague-honestly, I would have paid more for it. Other than that, cannot day enough good things about the trip! Thank you!!
A great tour that lived up to expectations and covered a lot of ground in a short space of time.
I would have wanted the Rila Monastery included in the itinerary. Our tour leader, Vlad, was everything (and more) that one can ask for in a guide. It was evident that he was well-read about the history of the places we saw. He even included images to show in his talks. On a personal note, he made every effort to address each group member's questions and concerns in a friendly yet professional manner and go out of the way, if necessary, to attend to them. The local guides, Peter and Ibrahim, were likewise very knowledgeable in their particular areas.

Imagine Dragons’ sixth studio album LOOM represents the pinnacle of their artistic journey of self-discovery and marks the best body of work they’ve ever made. LOOM , produced entirely by Imagine Dragons and their longtime collaborators Mattman and Robin, finds the perfect balance between the classic sounds that have made them superstars and the freshness that brought them joy in the studio. Featuring 9 brand new tracks including hit single “Eyes Closed”, LOOM signifies new beginnings on the horizon – the excitement for a new day, moments yet to come.

Last year, the members of Imagine Dragons found themselves with a rare and well-deserved break from the road—perhaps their longest in many years. So, they made the most of it by devoting that time to family and friends. Catalyzed by this respite with a refreshed perspective, the band rallied together in the studio and mined the same well of inspiration that fed their most beloved material. The musicians reflected on the past in order to catapult into a future where stylistic boundaries have disappeared entirely and anything is possible creatively. This journey has brought them to their most dynamic and definitive body of work to date, LOOM .

To herald LOOM , the band recently shared their soaring new anthem entitled “Eyes Closed.” Check out the video HERE . The track illuminates their penchant for boundary-breaking. Stretching the limits of the soundscape almost to the breaking point, they harness a burst of energy with a rafter-reaching refrain primed to soar on the upcoming summer tour.

It’s the year of the Dragons …

ABOUT IMAGINE DRAGONS:

Imagine Dragons continue to redefine rock in the 21 st century. Filling stadiums, crafting cloud-rattling anthems, and breaking records at every turn, diamond-certified GRAMMY® Award-winning Las Vegas quartet Imagine Dragons occupy rarified air as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Tallying cumulative sales of 74 million album equivalents, 65 million digital songs, and over 160 billion streams, they stand out as “the only band in history to earn four RIAA Diamond singles , ” namely “Radioactive” (16x-platinum), “Believer” (13x-platinum), “Thunder” (12x-platinum) and “Demons” (11x-platinum). Since emerging in 2009, they’ve scored five consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with Night Visions [2012] (7x-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Smoke+Mirrors [2015] (platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Evolve [2017] (triple-platinum) (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), Origins [2018] (platinum)(KIDinaKORNER/Interscope), and Mercury – Act 1 [2021]( KIDinaKORNER/Interscope). With the release of Mercury – Act 2 (KIDinaKORNER/Interscope) in 2022, they completed their first double-album opus produced by the legendary Rick Rubin. The hit single “Bones,” featured on Mercury Act 2, went to number one at Alternative Radio and remains in the Global Top 50 on Spotify. The band’s hit collaboration with East Atlanta-based rapper J.I.D, “Enemy,” has racked up billions of global streams and landed at #6 on the IFPI Global Singles Chart for 2022. Dominating radio, they remain one of only four bands to ever achieve consecutive Top 5 singles at Alternative radio, and the only band to repeat this feat. Each one with its own unique culture, cuisine, and history. And, yet, few tourists ever venture to this area of France . It sits in the shadows of more popular destinations, beckoning to be explored.

In ten days, you’ll travel from France’s bustling capital (Paris) to the enchanting villages in Alsace before zigzagging down to Lyon. Eastern France Itinerary – Day 1

Visit the eiffel tower.

Eiffel Tower at Sunrise from Place du Trocadéro

Your journey beings in the City of Light with the most epic of monuments, the Eiffel Tower. From its observation deck, you’ll have absolutely stunning views of Paris. Take the elevator to the top or brave the iron stairs. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.

Make sure to book your tickets in advance! They sell out quickly.

You can book your tickets by clicking here .

Useful Tip : If you don’t want to go to the top, there are several spots where you can see the Eiffel Tower for free. My favorite is Place du Trocadéro, especially at sunrise.

Address : Champ de Mars, 5 Avenue Anatole France

Closest Metro Stations : Trocadéro (Lines 6 and 9) and Bir-Hakeim (Line 6).

Meander Around Montmartre

The Streets of Montmartre

Montmartre is one of the most well-known arrondissements in Paris .

Since the 19th century, this hilltop district has been an important cultural center. In fact, famous artists like Picasso, Renoir, and Van Gogh lived and worked here at some point in their careers.

Today, the area is home to some of Paris’ most recognizable landmarks, including Moulin Rouge. Make sure to stop by Rue de l’Abreuvoir, it’s one of the most charming streets in Paris.

Closest Metro Station : Anvers (Line 2)

Marvel at the Sacré-Coeur Basilica

The Sacré-Coeur Basilica in Paris

Address : 35 Rue du Chevalier de la Barre

Stroll along the Promenade Plantée

Entrance to Promenade Plantée in Paris

The Promenade Plantée is a 4.5-kilometer (2.7-mile) long elevated park that runs through the 12th arrondissement. It’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a peaceful stroll.

Every time I’m in Paris I come here . And it’s the first place I recommend when I get asked about cool places to visit. If you can, get there early in the morning. The path will be empty, and you’ll have it all to yourself!

Closest Metro Station : Ledru-Rollin (Line 8) and Bel-Air (Line 6)

By Car : Driving time ranges from one to two hours, depending on traffic. (Distance: 144 kilometers or 89 miles)

Explore Reims

Close-up View of the Reims Cathedral where the Kings of France were crowned

The second day of your trip will be luxurious but not expensive. After all, this is where the kings of France were crowned.

Stroll the streets of Reims taking in the beautiful architecture, visit the Palais du Tau, or tour a champagne house. Of course, the Reims Cathedral and the Musée de la Reddition should also be on your list.

With so many things to do you might be wondering if a day in Reims is enough. Believe it or not, it is! The city is small and compact so it’s easy to visit in a single day.

Eastern France Itinerary – Day 3

Travel from reims to strasbourg.

On day three you’ll travel from Reims to Strasbourg. I recommend leaving early in the morning. Strasbourg is bigger than Reims, so you’ll want to be sure to have enough time to visit everything.

By Train : Trains from Reims to Strasbourg are frequent and take about two hours. First, take the train at Reims Central Station to Champagne-Ardenne TGV (15 minutes). Change trains and take the train to Strasbourg (1.5 hours). You can book your train tickets online by clicking here .

By Car : Driving from Reims to Strasbourg will be much longer than the train. It takes four to five hours in light traffic. (Distance: 347 kilometers or 215 miles) Parking in Strasbourg is limited so make sure your hotel offers it.

Useful Tip : Strasbourg is a small city, and you can visit the highlights in a day. But, if you want to experience all this city has to offer, you’ll need a few days here .

Meander Around La Petite France

Rows of Colorful Houses in La Petite France in Strasbourg

La Petite France is the most beautiful neighborhood in Strasbourg. Here colorful half-timbered houses from the 16th-century line narrow cobbled streets. There’s also a host of excellent restaurants and cafés where you can dine in style with some of the best views of the city.

For the most picturesque streets be sure to head to Quai de la Petite France and Rue du Pont du Saint-Martin.

Dine at La Maison des Tanneurs

Exterior of La Maison des Tanneurs in Strasbourg

If you’re strolling the streets of La Petite France, then stopping for a bite at La Maison des Tanneurs is a must. After all, this is one of the best spots to try traditional-style cuisine in town .

Its cozy interior is charming and welcoming. And the traditional hearty Alsatian menu will no doubt warm your soul. It’s a great way to experience the city’s culinary culture.

Make sure to ask for a table on the terrace, next to the canal. This is the most photographed spot in Strasbourg.

Address : 42 Rue du Bain-aux-Plantes

Marvel at Strasbourg’s Notre Dame Cathedral

The beautifully intricate exterior of Strasbourg's Notre Dame Cathedral

Strasbourg’s Notre Dame Cathedral is nothing short of magnificent. Construction of this Gothic masterpiece began in the 10th century and continued until 1439. Of course, once you see it, it’s clear why it took so long.

It dominates the city’s skyline at a whopping 142 meters (465 feet). And on a clear day, you can even see its tower from the outskirts of Alsace. Then, if you want to test the limits of your vertigo, climb to the top for the best view over Strasbourg.

Address : Place de la Cathédrale

Closest Tram Station : Broglie (Lines B, C, and F)

Visit Palais Rohan

View of Palais Royal in Strasbourg at Sunrise

As the cultural and economic center of Alsace, Strasbourg has played an important role in European history . So, why not explore its rich cultural heritage by visiting a museum?

Of course, there are tons of museums in Strasbourg, but Palais Rohan is home to three! Here you’ll find the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museum of Decorative Arts. And each one is on a different floor. So, not only will you get to learn something cool, but you’ll get to tour this 17th-century baroque palace.

Address : 2 Place du Château

Closest Tram Station : Langstross – Grand’Rue (Lines A and D)

Eastern France Itinerary – Day 4

Travel from strasbourg to colmar.

On the morning of day four, you’ll travel from Strasbourg to Colmar.

By Train : Trains from Strasbourg to Colmar are frequent and take about 30 minutes. You can book your train tickets online by clicking here .

By Car : The route from Strasbourg to Colmar is direct and only takes one hour. (Distance: 75 kilometers or 46 miles)

Useful Tip : Colmar is smaller than Strasbourg and you can see the main highlights in a day. But, if you want to see everything, you’ll need two days in Colmar.

Wander the Streets of Colmar

Most Colorful Houses in Colmar

This charming city is known for its well-preserved old-world architecture. As you wander through the rows of red, blue, and yellow half-timbered Medieval houses you can’t help but wonder if you’ve stepped back in time. It’s easy to get lost in the beauty of it all as each street seems more colorful than the last.

I recommend starting in La Petite Venise (Little Venice) near the Rue des Écoles bridge. It’s the most photogenic spot in Colmar.

Tour the Unterlinden Museum

Isenheim Altarpiece at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar

The Unterlinden Museum is one of the most famous museums in Colmar and the most visited in Alsace. It’s home to an impressive collection of works dating to prehistorical times. But its most well-known piece is the Isenheim Altarpiece from the early 15th century. Tickets start at €13.

So, they’ll cover the history of Colmar and give you some insider stories that you won’t hear elsewhere. It’s definitely one of the best things to do in Colmar !

Eastern France Itinerary – Day 5

Travel from colmar to eguisheim.

On the fifth day, you’ll travel to a small town not far from Colmar, Eguisheim.

By Bus : Head to the bus stop next to Colmar’s main train station called Diaconat. Take Bus 7 to Ricoh, the closest stop to Eguisheim.

By Car : Eguisheim is seven kilometers (four miles) west of Colmar. By car, it only takes 15 minutes.

Spend the Day in Eguisheim

Beautiful Street in Eguisheim with Colorful Houses and Hanging Baskets Full of Flowers

Nestled among the rolling vineyards of Alsace, lies a picturesque village called Eguisheim. This quaint town is mostly known by local tourists. But don’t let that deter you, there are so many attractions to visit in Eguisheim . In fact, this is one of my favorite places to visit in eastern France!

Wander the ramparts admiring the beautiful buildings or hike up to Les Trois Châteaux (The Three Castles) for the most magnificent views over the region. Then, of course, there’s the wine. It’s touted as the best in Alsace. You can tour the vineyards or a wine cellar. Either way, you won’t regret it.

Return to Colmar

Return to Colmar using the same bus you took to get to Eguisheim.

Useful Tip : While you could stay in Eguisheim, there are more accommodation options in Colmar.

Eastern France Itinerary – Day 6

Travel from colmar to kaysersberg.

On the sixth day, you’ll be exploring another beautiful town in Alsace, Kaysersberg. It’s not far from Colmar and it’s easily accessible.

Visit Kaysersberg

View from Kaysersberg's Fortified Bridge

Kaysersberg is another beautiful town in the Alsace region of eastern France. It’s well known for its picturesque architecture and lovely scenery. There are also plenty of things to do in Kaysersberg . Highlights include a fortified bridge from the 15th century, the every-impressive Château de Schlossberg that overlooks the town, and, of course, Église Sainte-Croix. Then, if you’re looking for an adventure, hike to Rocher des Corbeaux. It’s a 40-minute uphill slog, but your efforts will be rewarded with stunning views of the valley below.

Return to Colmar using the same bus you took to get to Kaysersberg.

Eastern France Itinerary – Day 7

Travel from colmar to dijon.

On day seven, you’ll leave Alsace and head to the capital of Burgundy, Dijon.

By Train : From Colmar’s Central Station, take the train to Dijon. Trains are frequent and take about two hours. Direct trains are rare so, in some cases, you’ll have to change at Mulhouse. You can book your train tickets online by clicking here .

By Car : The route to Dijon is straightforward and takes about two to three hours. (Distance: 251 kilometers or 155 miles)

Discover Dijon

The Streets of Dijon at Night

Dijon is a city rich in history and culture. It’s easily one of the best places in eastern France to visit. There are plenty of things to do here, but 24 hours in Dijon is enough.

Start your day at Palais des Ducs et des États de Bourgogne. This palace is a masterpiece of architectural design. Not only that but it’s also home to the Musée des Beaux-Arts, which has free admission. And last, but not least, you can go up to the tower (Tour Philippe le Bon) for some incredible views over the city.

After you toured the palace head over to the Dijon’s Notre Dame Cathedrale. It’s sure to leave you in awe.

Of course, no trip to Dijon is complete without sampling some mustard. After all, this is the town where it originated. You can even visit the original Maille shop!

Eastern France Itinerary – Day 8

Travel from dijon to lyon.

After a wonderful day in Dijon, you’ll head to the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Lyon.

By Train : Trains from Dijon to Lyon leave hourly and take about two hours. You can book your train tickets online by clicking here .

By Car : From Dijon to Lyon, the route is direct and only takes two hours. (Distance: 194 kilometers or 120 miles)

Useful Tip : This eastern France Itinerary allows for two days in Lyon. But if you want to explore everything this wonderful town has to offer, three days in Lyon is ideal.

Wander through Vieux Lyon (Lyon’s Old Town)

Vieux Lyon at Sunrise

Vieux Lyon sits between the banks of the Saône River and cobblestoned streets lined with Renaissance-era mansions. It’s here you’ll find the most beautiful architecture in the city. Then, of course, there’s the majestic Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste which is a must-visit.

There’s also a wealth of museums in the neighborhood. My favorite was the Musée Miniature et Cinéma (Movies & Miniature Museum). From life-like models to tiny scenes, you’ll learn about special effects and how they’ve evolved over the years. It’s an extraordinary museum, to say the least.

Closest Metro Station : Vieux Lyon – Cathédrale Saint-Jean (Line D)

Get Lost in a Traboule

Cour des Voraces Traboule in Lyon

Who doesn’t like secret passageways?

Believe it or not but Lyon has tons of hidden passageways or traboules.

These traboules were originally created to transport products. The first of these appeared in the fourth century but proved the most useful during World War II. Today, you can explore these hidden passageways as part of a tour or on your own. There are several throughout the city, but a few stand out.

Below are the most famous traboules in Lyon:

  • Longest Traboule – 54 Rue St Jean connecting with 27 Rue de Boeuf
  • Cour des Voraces – Entrances at Place Colbert, Montée Saint-Sébastien and Rue Imbert-Colomès.

Useful Tip : I had a hard time finding the entrances. Keep your eyes peeled. Most of the time they are labeled, but the labels are not obvious. Don’t be afraid to enter through a door that looks like someone’s house.

Marvel at Lyon’s Frescoes

La Fresque des Lyonnais - one of the most famous Frescoes in Lyon

When it comes to street art Lyon doesn’t disappoint. And of the pieces you will see, the frescoes are the most impressive. These giant murals depict everyday scenes in life-size proportions. In fact, these are so real they almost look like an optical illusion or trompe l’oeil in French. Some of the most famous include La Fresque des Canuts, La Fresque des Lyonnais, and La Bibliothèque de la Cité.

Addresses :

  • La Fresque des Canuts – Corner of Boulevard des Canuts and Rue Denfert Rochereau
  • La Fresque des Lyonnais – 2 Rue de la Martinière
  • La Bibliothèque de la Cité – 6 Rue de la Platière

Eastern France Itinerary – Day 9

Meander around fourvière hill.

View of Lyon from Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière

Towering over Lyon lies one of its most beautiful neighborhoods, Fourvière Hill. From Vieux Lyon, it’s a solid climb to the top, but you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views and some of the best attractions in the city. Given its size and the number of things to see, it will take you at least half a day to visit the entire area.

First on the list of things to see is the ever-magnificent Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière . Featuring Romanesque and Byzantine architecture, this marble-coated church features intricate mosaics and gorgeous stained-glass windows.

Not far from the basilica is the Ancient Theatre of Fourvière. Once at the center of the Romain city, this, now UNESCO World Heritage Site can sit up to 10,000 people. The ruins are open to the public and free to visit year-round.

Next to the theater is the Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière . This massive museum covers the history of Lyon starting from its first inhabitants. And, for only €7, you’ll get to tour one of the largest archaeological collections in France.

Then, to finish your time in Fourvière Hill, head to Jardin des Curiosités. This small garden isn’t much, but the views are spectacular. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy a picnic.

Closest Funicular Station (to Fourvière Hill) : Minimes Théatres Romains (Line F1)

Explore Parc de la Tête d’Or

The Rose Garden in Parc de la Tête d'Or

Parc de la Tête d’Or is the largest and most visited park in Lyon. At a whopping 117 hectares (290 acres), it’s easy to spend an afternoon here. Stroll along the well-maintained walking paths, admire one of its many gardens, or picnic in a grassed area. It’s a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Closest Metro Station : Charpennes Charles Hernu (Lines A and B)

Eastern France Itinerary – Day 10

Travel from lyon to paris.

After two glorious days in Lyon, you’ll head back to Paris to finish your trip.

By Train : Trains go from Lyon’s Part Dieu to Paris’ Gare de Lyon almost every hour and take two and a half hours. It’s a popular route so you should buy your tickets a few days in advance. You can book your train tickets online by clicking here .

By Car : The route from Lyon to Paris is direct, but far. It takes about five hours. (Distance: 465 kilometers or 288 miles)

Visit Paris

Bois de Vincennes in Paris during the Summer

Depending on your schedule, you can either finish the list of things to do in Paris above or visit some other sites. If you have more time, I recommend a few things.

First is the Louvre. Yes, this is touristy but it’s a must-see, nonetheless. Then, there’s the Père Lachaise Cemetery. This is the most visited cemetery in Paris and for good reason. Here you’ll find the tombstones of artists including Edith Piaf and Oscar Wilde. And, last but not least, my favorite place of all, Bois de Vincennes. It’s the perfect place to relax before catching a flight!

Get In and Around

This eastern France itinerary starts and ends in Paris. And, of the cities on this list, it’s the easiest to reach and the most connected.

Paris has two international airports (Charles de Gaulle and Orly). You can also reach most cities on this list from a train station in Paris.

You can do this itinerary by train or car. Both are excellent options. The high-speed trains in France are very efficient, but the freedom that comes with renting a car can’t be beat.

Renting a Car – If you’re looking to rent a car in France, I recommend Discover Cars . They search both local and international car rental companies to find you the best deals and the lowest prices.

Train Tickets – You can book and buy all of your train tickets online by clicking here .

When to Visit Eastern France

  • April to June – This is one of the best times to visit eastern France. The summer crowds have yet to arrive, the weather is pleasant, and prices are lower.
  • July to August – This is the worst time to travel in France. The prices are at their highest, the crowds are unbearable, and the heat is stifling.
  • September to November – Like Spring, Fall is another great time to visit eastern France. The summer crowds have cleared, and prices start to drop. Plus, the falls colors start to show in the middle of October.
  • December – If you want to see the Christmas markets, this is the best time to visit.
  • January to March – Unless you love skiing, this is not a good time to tour eastern France. It’s cold and most outdoor attractions are closed.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Entertainment | method behind the masterpiece: east boulder county artists take the spotlight at spring studio tour.

Artist Jessica Marshall will be featured in this year's East Boulder County Artist spring studio tour. (Boulder Fine Art Reproduction/Courtesy photo)

With all of the fun activities to do when springtime rolls around in Boulder County — like hiking up in Nederland or going mountain biking at Hall Ranch — it’s easy to turn west and dive headfirst into activities at altitude when the warm weather hits.

We Front Rangers need to be reminded that there are plenty of reasons to hop in the car and head east. Especially this weekend.

The East Boulder County Artists spring tour is back and invites the artistically inquisitive to tour 56 different artists at 27 different studio locations throughout Longmont, Lafayette, Louisville and Niwot. In a true choose-your-own-adventure fashion, the self-guided tour allows the public to visit local artists as they work in their creative sanctuaries, offering a rare glimpse into the artistic process and a peek into the stories behind each masterpiece. The free event will run 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

From textile artists morphing a scratchy piece of cloth into a glittering tapestry, or stained glass artists fusing sharp bits of glass into a dainty suncatcher, this year’s tour features some of the most talented sculptors, painters, printmakers, fiber artists, potters, wood carvers and metal smiths in East County.

With so many amazing artists and studios to choose from, we rounded up some of our favorite artists in East County to visit on this year’s spring tour. For the definitive list of participating artists and studio locations, visit the interactive map at ebcacolorado.org to make the most of your sunny springtime weekend creative excursion. Printed maps are also available at Longmont Public Library, Louisville Public Library and at each of the studio locations. Or snag your copy on pages 8-9 of Friday Magazine.

Through April, don’t miss the preview shows that are on display at Longmont Public Library, 409 4th Ave., Longmont, and Louisville Public Library, 951 Spruce St., Louisville.

just receptacles, but canvases for delicate botanical illustrations, such as cacti and wildflowers. Her pieces feature the classic blue-on-white motif that is reminiscent of historical Chinese porcelain works, but with a contemporary twist.

Studio-goers can catch a glimpse of Kegel as she transforms a lump of clay into one of these gorgeously functional pieces — and perhaps snag one to add to their own collection.

Kegel will be showing her works and demonstrating her form at Studio No. 12, 2125 9th Ave., Longmont, along with with artists Rebecca Martin, Allie Olender, Mariah Stotsky and Julia Zuniga.

Minimalist at maximum vibrancy

Ryan Wiese is an apparel-designer-turned-glass-jeweler-turned-painter, all trades that helped shape his art today.

His acrylic works are inspired by the shapes created when different colors of glass are melted together. With clean lines and vibrant contrasting colors, his paintings are a playful, abstract and beautiful feast for the eyes.

“My vision is to create paintings that are simple, yet captivating,” Wiese said in his statement for ECBA.

Head to Wiese’s studio to learn more about his creative process, which begins as sketches with pencil and ink — then see how he morphs them into chromatic canvases.

This weekend, visit Weise and watch him in action at Studio No. 22, 7983 Grasmere Drive, Boulder. Learn more at ryanwiese.com .

Jewelry designs by artist Tammy Helart. Helart is participating in the East Boulder County Artists spring tour. (Tammy Helart/Courtesy photo)

Bejeweled silversmith

Working with sterling and fine silver, as well as natural stones and semi-precious gems,  Tammy Helart jewelry designs are understated, elegant and altogether stunning.

Helart places an emphasis on the beauty of the stones she works with — which include turquoise, jasper and the rare opalized fossil wood — using the silver as a mere framework in her pieces and letting the rocks speak for themselves.

Tammy will show her work at Studio No. 17, 825 Tempted Ways Drive, Longmont, along with local artists Malena Hirschfeld and Debra Stanger. Learn more at splendentstonesshop.com .

Dreamlike nature

From rolling landscapes capturing Colorado foothills to abstract depictions of California poppies,

Longmont native Jessica Marshall paints the natural world around her using crisp blues, aspen yellows and warm magentas. Marshall’s paintings are soft and dreamlike, evoking a sense of tranquility and introspection in each piece.

Take a peek into Marshall’s creative world at Studio No. 3, 6307 Laodicea Road, Longmont, along with fellow artist Lorena Fox. Learn more at libraryofmarshallarts.com .
