Tourism in Egypt is bound by the seasons. While only the hardiest want to troop through temples during the scorching heat of July and August, Egypt’s mild winter brings in flocks of visitors to flop on the beaches, gawk at Giza’s pyramids and cruise the Nile.

A happy medium can be reached by traveling during the shoulder seasons of autumn and spring when the press of fellow travelers isn’t as intense at major sites and daytime temperatures hover at manageable levels.

Read on for the best time to visit whether you're heading to Egypt to sightsee, go scuba diving or cruise the Nile.

March to May plus September are the best for avoiding crowds

Traveling during shoulder season often brings the best of both worlds. Major monuments aren’t as packed and there’s usually an accommodation bargain or two to be had.

Daytime temperatures can still be very hot in May and September so shoulder season travelers sensitive to heat (and families traveling with little ones) would do well to aim for March, April or October instead.

The weather is generally bearable so you can spend an entire day outside from about late-September into October. This is really Egypt’s best travel season.  It's also a good time for diving. The light along the Nile is at its most soft and clear – great for photography in Luxor and Aswan – while in the Western Desert oases, the date harvest is in full swing.

The sand-loaded khamsin wind begins blowing in March, and the resulting sandstorms can disrupt travel and occasional ground flights; prevent feluccas from sailing in Aswan; and make sightseeing impossible due to low visibility. Add an extra day or two into your itinerary in case plans go awry.

In April, the khamsin can still be an issue, but when it isn’t blowing this is a near-perfect month for Egypt travels. The warmer evenings make it particularly good for overnight felucca trips from Aswan and camping in the White Desert.

May is usually a good time for package-deals to resorts like Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada, El Gouna and Marsa Alam.

June through August is the best time to go diving in Egypt

The weather switches to sweltering as average high temperature hit 108°F (42°C). Luxor’s temples and tombs open at 6am so it’s still possible to beat the heat by being an early bird.

Expect to be greeted with an ironic “Welcome to Alaska!” in Aswan. Unless you’re made of extremely tough stuff, it’s best to skip the Western Desert.

Summer is when serious divers head to Sharm el-Sheikh and the Red Sea coast. They’re willing to take the baking heat on land in return for the payoff of calm, warm sea conditions and fantastic underwater visibility. Although Egypt can be dived year-round.

Just to flip the low season rule, summer is the peak domestic-holiday period along the Mediterranean coast as half of Cairo decamps to the beach. Yes, it’s still boiling in Alexandria but at least there’s a breeze.

October to February is best for milder weather in Egypt

In the Northern European winter, many travelers (and tour groups) escape the gray skies back home to bask on the beaches of Sharm el-Sheikh and the Red Sea coast  this time of year.

You'll find decent weather across most of the country, although in Cairo and Alexandria  be prepared for rain. If you’re here to delve into Luxor’s glut of Pharaonic riches, winter brings blue skies and pleasant daytime temperatures to make long days of rambling around ancient ruins a pleasure rather than an endurance test.

This is also the most popular season to head into the Sinai or the Western Desert for outdoor adventures (from hiking to camel trekking), or to bask in the winter sun between learning to dive in South Sinai and along the Red Sea coast . Divers should note that sea conditions can get choppy on boat dives around December, but shore dives are generally fine.

In Cairo , the cooler weather makes November a good bet for long strolls to discover the capital’s madrassas and mosques. Be aware, it will get colder than you probably expect (especially else after dark) so you also need to pack something warm. Finally, expect high accommodation prices during the winter peak season, especially around Christmas and New Year.

Can I travel in Egypt during Ramadan?

The dates for Ramadan (the month when Muslims fast during daylight hours) change annually as the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar year.

If you’re traveling during Ramadan, be aware that tourist sites, along with most shops and services, operate shorter hours and many non-tourist orientated restaurants and cafes only open after sunset.

In Egypt, non-Muslims are not expected to observe the fast but visitors should politely show respect for fasters by being discreet – don’t blatantly swig from your water bottle or munch snacks on the street.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Egypt?

By Sophie Prideaux

Egypt is a destination that features on many travelers' bucket lists, and for good reason. But deciding on the best time to visit Egypt depends on your itinerary. Not only is it home to one of the world's most famous and intriguing archaeological sites , its year-round sunshine, world-class diving, and abundant culture continue to entice travelers the world over. Here's what you need to know when planning a trip to Egypt.

Editor's note: On October 7, 2023, violence erupted across Israel and Gaza in one of the worst conflicts the region has seen in decades, according to The New York Times . While travel experts advise postponing travel to Israel, no travel advisories have been issued against travel to surrounding countries in the Middle East, including Egypt , at press time.

A version of this article originally appeared in Condé Nast Traveller Middle East .

When is the best time to visit Egypt?

It depends. If you want to relax on the beaches of Hurghada or Sharm El-Sheikh , you’ll likely want sunshine and warm temperatures. The months either side of winter, October and November or March and April offer the best conditions, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures hovering around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, occasionally creeping into the low nineties.

If you’re planning to explore the busy streets of Cairo , you’re better off waiting for the cooler temperatures that December and January bring. Like much of the Middle East and North Africa, Egypt experiences warm and dry weather year round, although coastal areas do see rain and milder temperatures during winter.

When is the best time to visit Egypt to see the Pyramids?

The Pyramids of Giza are Egypt’s most-visited attraction, so naturally, many travelers plan their itinerary around a stop here. If you want to make the most of exploring the major archaeological sites at this complex, including the three pyramids of kings Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx, it’s best to avoid the summer months, when temperatures regularly reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.

The months between December and February are the coolest, with highs of around the high sixties. However, evenings can get chilly during these months, so pack accordingly. This is also a popular time for organized group tours , so attractions can get crowded. March and October are good options, still offering cooler temperatures, with fewer tourists around.

Evenings in Egypt can get chilly during the winter months, so pack accordingly.

When is the cheapest time to go to Egypt?

It’s always cheapest to travel during the off-season, which would fall between May and August across Egypt. These months bring about harsh desert summer temperatures, so if you are planning to travel in summer, you’re better off heading to coastal areas , which are slightly cooler. On the plus side, this is the best time to find deals on flights and hotels, when occupancy rates are lower. The next best option are the shoulder months, so look for deals in September or late April.

When is the busiest time to visit Egypt?

Peak tourist season across Egypt lasts from mid-October to mid-February, so expect major attractions to be busy during these months. However, Egypt is particularly busy around the traditional festive season in late December, as well in early January, when many in Egypt celebrate Orthodox Christmas on January 7.

When is the best time for diving in Egypt?

Egypt’s Red Sea coast has long been a haven for scuba divers , who flock to these waters to explore its thriving coral reefs which are home to more than 1,200 underwater species. For divers keen to spot the likes of hammerhead sharks and manta rays, June to September offers the best chance, when water temperatures are at their warmest.

Best Time to Visit Egypt: Month by Month Breakdown

Egypt is a destination of rich archaeological sites, beautiful coastline and compelling history and culture stretching back thousands of years.

Tourists have been visiting Egypt for centuries, intent on delving into the ancient world, cruising the Nile River, and staring in awe at the Pyramids of Giza.

For tourists, the weather is great in Egypt. The country enjoys sunshine and hot weather all through the year, with very little rainfall even in winter.

The weather can vary from region to region, with a Mediterranean climate on the coast, and a more desert-like climate inland.

There are usually two high seasons to consider when deciding the best time to visit Egypt.

The cooler winter months between December and February are the best time for exploring the ruins and archaeological sites.

The scorching hot summer months, between June and August, are a favorite time of year for hanging out at the Red Sea beach resorts.

Spoiler Alert! Our favorite time to visit Egypt is November.

To help you to plan your getaway, here’s our guide to choosing the best time to visit Egypt!

Egypt Winter Months

Camels at the Great Pyramids of Giza - best time to visit egypt

Winter in Egypt is high season because the weather is cooler than other months of the year yet still beautifully sunny.

It’s a favorite spot for winter sun-seekers, and especially for lovers of Egyptology.

While the desert gets cold at night – bring a light jacket – the ruins, temples, and tombs of the Ancient Egyptians are best enjoyed in cooler climes when you won’t work up too much of a sweat.

December in Egypt

Philae Temple in Aswan, Egypt

December is one of the most popular times to be in the country, and if you want to avoid the crowds, it’s never the best time to visit Egypt.

It’s sunny across the country, although the Mediterranean coast can be hit by the odd storm or rainy day.

It’s still hot, with temperatures hovering in the mid-twenties in most destinations.

The Red Sea beach resorts are always popular over Christmas and New Year, as families head here from Europe looking for winter sun and a hot place to spend their holidays.

You’ll be paying high season prices, and sharing the beaches with a lot of other tourists.

Head south to the famous cities of Luxor and Aswan, and take a Nile River Cruise between the two.

While it’s definitely going to be busy, because the weather is perfect for exploring archaeological sites all day, it’s the best time to be in this part of Egypt.

January in Egypt

David Stock at Karnak Temple in Luxor, Egypt

January is likely to be just as busy as December, although visitor numbers will definitely start to fall off towards the middle of the month after the rush of the holiday season is over.

If you want a winter sun getaway then head to the Red Sea for beaches, snorkeling, and diving.

If you’re a fan of all things Ancient Egyptian, then the weather is perfect for exploring iconic places such as the Pyramids of Giza or the Valley of the Kings, but you’ll be sharing the iconic sights with a lot of other tourists.

Culturally, this is the best time to visit Egypt if you’d like to learn more about the Coptic Christian communities.

January 7th is the most important day in the Coptic calendar, as this is when they celebrate Christmas. Head to the cities of Cairo or Alexandria to see and experience more.

February in Egypt

David Stock at Edfu Temple in Egypt

Compared to December and January, February is a lot quieter and it’s a great time to explore Egypt if you’re a fan of shoulder season travel.

The weather is getting much warmer already, but you might catch a few of the last winter storms, although these are a rarity even on the coast.

This is a great time to explore southern Egypt. Take a Nile River cruise from Luxor to Aswan, and enjoy the archaeological sites before it gets too hot. The crowds won’t be quite as large as the previous two months.

Time your visit to coincide with the Abu Simbel Festival, held each February at the famous Abu Simbel Temples.

These are found on the Sudanese border, just a short journey from Aswan, and were built thousands of years ago by Ramesses II. The festival is a throwback to the region’s thousands of years of history and culture.

Egypt Spring Months

Felucca boats on the Nile River in Aswan, Egypt

The weather really starts to warm up across Egypt as you leave winter behind and enter the spring season.

The Nile River is green and verdant after the winter rain, while there are many festivals and celebrations across the country.

This is a great time for shoulder season travel, before the busy summer months, but be aware of when important religious events such as Ramadan are, as this generally tends to happen around April and May.

March in Egypt

Lina Stock at the Great Sphinx in Egypt

March is another shoulder season month, and it’s a great time to visit Egypt if you want to escape the crowds.

On the Red Sea, you can score cheap deals on flights and all-inclusive packages. With warmer waters and lots of sunshine, it’s really not a bad time lounge on the beaches or to enjoy some Scuba diving.

You’ll have fewer crowds in the south as well, but remember that the desert is starting to heat up in March.

In reality, it’s a good time to visit the temples and pyramids before the heat and the crowds of summer.

April in Egypt

David Stock at Edfu Temple in Egypt

April can be a mixed bag in terms of visitor numbers because over the Easter holidays you’ll find plenty of tourists arriving.

Try to avoid these weeks if you want to visit in April.

Travel south to Luxor and Aswan, or stick around Cairo and explore the Pyramids of Giza and other famous ancient sites, because, after this, visitor numbers will start to rise again, as will the heat.

Alexandria is glorious in April, with lovely Meditteranean weather, sunny days and clear skies.

Visit the famed Biblioteca Alexandria and the many catacombs and ruins that date back to the Greek and Roman era, when the city was one of the most important in the ancient world.

May in Egypt

Lina Stock at Karnak Temple in Luxor, Egypt

May is the last quiet month before the summer high season begins in earnest in Egypt, and oftentimes, this is the month when Ramadan is likely to fall.

This can be a unique festival to witness, although non-Muslims will need to be aware of the rules and local customs during the holiday so as not to cause offense.

Weather-wise, it’s getting much hotter in May, and temperatures are rising exponentially.

It’s not a good time to be in the desert, but you will enjoy the sun and cooling winds that are found on the Mediterranean coast and the Red Sea.

Egypt Summer Months

Hot air balloon flights over Valley of the Kings in Luxor - best time to visit Egypt

Summer is the high season and it’s the best time to visit Egypt if you’re looking for a beach holiday.

It’s not the best time if you can’t handle the heat and the crowds. It’s hot and it’s busy, all through summer.

June in Egypt

Lina Stock at Abu Simbel in Egypt

June is the start of peak season travel in Egypt, and prices for flights, accommodation, and tours will begin to go up.

It’s not quite as busy as July and August are going to get, so it’s a good time to visit the resorts on the Red Sea before the huge crowds arrive.

With warm waters, it’s a great time to snorkel and scuba dive on the Red Sea too, or you could even dive below the waves of Alexandria Harbour.

This is where you’ll find the uniquely preserved remains of Cleopatra’s Palace many centuries after it was lost below the waterline.

July in Egypt

Camel train at the Giza pyramids in Egypt

July is busy because this is when the school holidays usually begin in earnest across Europe.

It’s guaranteed to be hot, and in the desert, temperatures will routinely rise well above 40 degrees Celsius in the middle of the day. Even the night time can be unbearably hot.

The heat doesn’t stop people visiting, although admittedly most vacationers tend to stick to the resorts, where you’ll find busy beaches all through June.

August in Egypt

Lina Stock at Abu Simbel in Egypt

August will be just as busy as July because it’s still peak season and it’s the summer holiday season in Europe.

Prices will be higher than other times of the year, and beaches and tourist attractions will be crowded.

It’s going to be too hot to be anywhere other than the beaches though, so if you are visiting Egypt in August then brave the crowds and stick to the Red Sea resorts.

This way you can cool off in the swimming pools or in the sea.

Egypt Fall Months

Horse carriage at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt

The fall season is a great time to explore Egypt’s interior, as the heat starts to dissipate.

Compared to summer, it’s going to be incredibly quiet through the fall months, and it’s a great time to grab a great deal on flights and tours.

September in Egypt

View from the Philae Temple in Aswan - best time to visit Egypt

If you can wait out the summer and travel in September, then this could be the best time to visit Egypt.

The weather is still undeniably hot, but things are starting to cool down, especially away from the coast.

You can head south to explore the ancient sites around Luxor or cruise along the Nile River to Aswan and the Abu Simbel Temples.

Visit the Red Sea for good post high season deals on resorts.

October in Egypt

Hot Air Balloon over the West Bank in Luxor, Egypt

October is quieter than September, and it’s much cooler too. This is the perfect time to start visiting Egypt’s most famous attractions, and places that will soon become busy again in the winter.

Explore the archaeological delights of Luxor and Aswan, take in the bustling streets of Cairo and the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Or uncover the hidden history of Alexandria, while enjoying the warm climes of the Mediterranean.

November in Egypt

David Stock at the Red Pyramid outside Cairo - best time to visit Egypt

November is the last shoulder month before the high season starts again in December.

It’s much cooler in November and it’s a beautiful time to explore Egypt, as you’ll avoid the worst of the summer heat and miss the worst of the winter crowds.

Take the opportunity to visit iconic destinations and famous tourist attractions, or get a steal on a resort on the Red Sea.

After this, it’s only going to get busier.

The Best Time to Visit Egypt

egypt tour best time

For thousands of years, travelers have journeyed to Egypt to gaze in wonder at the ancient pyramids and temples left over from the time of the pharaohs, one of the greatest civilizations the world has ever known. More recently, visitors also go to soak up the culture or to do business in Cairo ; and to discover the idyllic beaches and world-famous reefs of the Red Sea. If a trip to Egypt is on your bucket list, one of the first decisions you'll need to make is when to go.

If weather is your primary concern, the best time to visit Egypt is during the northern hemisphere fall, winter or early spring (October to April), when temperatures are lower. To avoid the crowds at ancient sites like the Pyramids of Giza , Luxor , and Abu Simbel, try to avoid peak season (December and January). At this time of year, accommodation and tours throughout the country are typically more expensive. Budget travelers can get good discounts in the summer and shoulder seasons.

The Weather in Egypt

For many people, weather is a crucial factor in deciding when to visit Egypt. The climate is typically hot and sunny throughout the year, and there is very little precipitation south of Cairo. Even in the wettest places ( Alexandria and Rafah), it only rains on an average of 46 days per year. Winters are generally mild, with daytime temperatures in Cairo averaging around 68 degrees F. At night, temperatures in the capital can drop to 50 degrees F or lower. In summer, temperatures reach an average of 95 degrees F, exacerbated by intense humidity.

It is important to remember that many of Egypt's ancient sights are located in desert regions that remain hot despite the proximity of the Nile River. Climbing into an airless tomb on a 100-degree day can be draining. Several top attractions are located in southern Egypt, where it is even hotter than Cairo. If you're planning on visiting Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel and/or Lake Nasser from May to October, make sure to avoid the midday heat by planning your sight-seeing for the early morning or late afternoon. Between March and May, the Khamsin wind brings thick dust and sandstorms.

Best Time to Cruise the Nile

With this in mind, the best time to book a  Nile cruise is between October and April. Temperatures are manageable at this time of year, allowing you to get the most out of day trips to iconic sights like the Valley of the Kings and the temples of Luxor. For the same reasons, travel during the peak summer months of June to August is not advised. Average highs for Aswan exceed 104 degrees F at this time of year, and there isn't a lot of shade to offer respite from the midday sun.

Best Time to Enjoy the Red Sea

June to September is an excellent time to visit the Red Sea beach resorts. Despite being the peak of summer, temperatures on the coast are much cooler than in the interior. Average summer temperatures at popular beach resort Hurghada  hover at around 84 degrees F, while the sea temperature is a balmy 80 degrees F—perfect for snorkeling and  scuba diving . In July and August it's essential to book well in advance, as resorts can get busy with vacationing Europeans and Americans; and with wealthy Egyptians seeking to escape the heat of Cairo.

Best Time to Visit Egypt's Western Desert

Summers in the desert should be avoided, as temperatures at destinations like Siwa Oasis  routinely exceed 104 degrees F. During the depths of winter, nighttime temperatures can plummet to just below freezing, so the best time to visit is halfway between the two in either spring or fall. February to April and September to November are the optimum times temperature-wise, although spring visitors should be aware of possible sandstorms as a result of the annual Khamsin wind.

Traveling to Egypt During Ramadan

Ramadan is the Muslim holy month of fasting, and the dates change every year according to the dates of the Islamic calendar. Tourists are not expected to fast when visiting Egypt during Ramadan. However, shops and banks tend to close for much of the day, while many cafés and restaurants do not open at all during daylight hours. At night, there is a generally festive atmosphere as eating and drinking resume. Toward the end of Ramadan, there are several festivities that are fun to experience and observe.

Spring is a nice time to visit Egypt, as temperatures are typically quite moderate. Some visitors may want to avoid the Khamsin wind season (March to May) as visibility is often impaired by sand and dust storms. This is a particular concern for keen photographers. Accommodation and tour prices are typically cheaper than they are in the peak winter season.

Events to check out:

  • Abu El Haggag Moulid, a five-day carnival in Luxor, typically takes place in the spring, a month before Ramadan. The festival celebrates a 13th-century Sufi leader, Yusuf Abu Al Haggag.
  • People of Egypt celebrate Sham El Nessim to welcome the season of spring in the country. It usually takes place in April, after Coptic Easter.

Temperatures are often sweltering in summer, especially in Upper Egypt near Luxor. But traveling during this time has its perks: you can see Egypt without swells of fellow tourists, leaving you in peace at some of the country's most revered monuments. Ramadan typically falls during the summer months; beware that some attractions may close earlier than usual.

  • Muslims end the long month of Ramadan with Eid al Fitr, a religious festival.
  • Wafaa Al Nil is an ancient festival devoted to the Nile River.

Like spring, fall brings cooler temperatures and affordable prices. Heat can sometimes last into October, but crowds are still thin, making this a great time to visit popular monuments. If you're planning a visit to the beach, this is an ideal season to do so as the Red Sea is still warm and uncrowded.

While winter can mean nice weather, it's also the high tourist season. Attractions will be more crowded, and hotel prices can skyrocket. There is occasional rain and some cities, like Alexandria, will be quite damp.

  • On January 7, the Coptics of Egypt celebrate Coptic Christmas. At midnight, worshippers gather en masse and enjoy a traditional fatta meal together.
  • The Abu Simbel Festival is held on February 22 each year in celebration of the eponymous temple.
  • Formerly held in the summer, Egypt Art Fair is one of the largest exhibitions of contemporary art in the country.

The best time to visit Egypt is fall (from October to November) and spring (from February to April). The weather is mild and you can comfortably explore all of the outdoor desert sites without baking in the sun.

If you're visiting sites like Cairo, the Pyramids of Giza, or Luxor, summer temperatures are dangerously hot and you should avoid visiting. However, the coastal area around the Red Sea is much milder and you have the beach nearby to cool off.

December and January are the peak tourist season. The temperatures are mild but tourist attractions like the pyramids or tombs will be very crowded.

Best Time to Visit Egypt and When to Book!

With your eyes set on a vacation in Egypt, all you need to do is choose the best time to visit Egypt and the places you plan to go. This guide will take you through the best months to visit all the historic destinations and other points of interest in Egypt.

Best Time to Visit Egypt and When to Book

Egypt is hot… but how hot exactly?

The month you choose to visit Egypt (and the destinations you plan to peruse) makes a huge difference to the experience you’ll have.

With varying temperatures and even freezing conditions at night in some areas, it’s best to choose when you visit Egypt carefully. This guide covers the best times to visit Egypt, month by month, including peak tourist seasons to avoid and other national holidays to be aware of.

Design Your Custom Tour

When is the Best Time to Visit Egypt?

The very short answer is October to April. Following the seasons in the Northern Hemisphere:

  • Late November to February is typically the winter months
  • March to May is springtime
  • June to August is summertime
  • September to early November is fall.

Looking at rough temperatures in Cairo , Egypt’s primary tourist destination, you can see why peak seasons are always in the cooler months!

  • Spring average temperatures: 23°C (73°F)
  • Summer average temperatures: 29°C (84°F)
  • Fall average temperatures: 24°C (75°F)
  • Winter average temperatures: 16°C (61°F)

So, if you struggle to tolerate heat then go to Egypt in the winter. If you can handle a little heat and want to avoid the crowds, choose the early spring and late autumn months.

Peak Tourist Season in Egypt

The peak tourist season in Egypt is typically winter, especially in Cairo where the primary attractions are located (including the pyramids). If you visit over the New Year and Christmas , you’ll also be able to enjoy the celebrations.

The coastal areas, including Alexandria and numerous destinations along the Red Sea, have their peak season in fall, spring, and early summer. Like inland Egypt destinations, these areas get very hot in the middle of summer with extra humidity. They also get quite rainy during the winter months.

To avoid peak season, visit in October, November, February, March, and April.

Should You Visit Egypt in the Summer?

It is extremely hot in the summer months. Cairo is sweltering and trips to the Western Desert are unadvisable. Even the locals, who are more accustomed to the heat, can suffer from the heat during July and August. On the coast, the water makes the heat a little more bearable… but there’s also a lot more humidity that you won’t find inland.

Even if you can tolerate high temperatures at home, we do not recommend going to Egypt in the height of summer!

Best Time to Visit Egypt by Location

Egypt has a lot to offer, with historic sites and attractions that have been attracting visitors for thousands of years. But not all sites in Egypt share the same best time to visit.

Archaeological Destinations

The Archaeological destinations in Egypt are primarily inland. This includes the Giza Pyramids and the Valley of the Kings, as well as other sites around Cairo, Aswan, and Luxor .

Best time for inland Egypt : October and November when the heat becomes comfortable but before the December crowds.

Worst time for inland Egypt : June to August is completely unbearable. May and September may also be too hot for heat-sensitive travelers.

Nile Cruise

A Nile cruise is one of our most popular itineraries for an Egypt vacation. These cruises typically stop at Cairo, Luxor, and/or Aswan, so the best time of year for a Nile cruise is like other inland destinations.

Best time for a Nile cruise : March and April. These ‘shoulder’ months miss the peak tourist season but are still cool enough for excursions. October and November are also good for comfortable temperatures but are busier.

Worst time for a Nile cruise : June to August is too hot. Even with the water of the Nile and a light breeze as you sail, it is too hot for most travelers.

Mediterranean Coast

The primary destination along the Mediterranean coast is Alexandria. Whether you are staying in the city or a nearby resort, you’ll experience quite a different climate from inland Egyptian destinations.

Best time to visit Alexandria : Summer months of May and June, when the temperatures are warm (average highs of 24°C to 28°C) and rainfall is at its lowest.

Worst time to visit Alexandria : Late July and August when the humidity makes the heat unbearable. Likewise, December and January are rainy and have low temperatures dropping to 10°C.

Red Sea Coast

Destinations along the Red Sea Coast include Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada, Marsa Alam, and El Gouna. These spots are great for spending a vacation at a resort and enjoying the benefits of the Red Sea: Diving, snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing.

Best time for the Red Sea Coast : Late October and November, or April and May. Temperatures at these times are certainly warm (24°C to 34°C (75°F to 93°F) but not scorching.

Worst time for the Red Sea Coast : July, August, and September may be too hot. December also brings choppy waters that are less suitable for watersports and diving.

Western Desert

The Western desert area of Egypt has a special kind of draw, with the remote Siwa Oasis feeling almost mystical. However, you should expect a desert climate! This means extremely hot days in the summer and freezing cold nights in the winter.

Best time to visit Siwa Oasis : Late September, October, and early November are the sweet spots for temperatures. Spring months may also be attractive, but there’s a higher chance of Khamsin bringing sandstorms.

Worst time to visit Siwa Oasis : Both mid-summer months and mid-winter months should be avoided for their temperature extremes.

Month-by-Month Breakdown of when to visit Egypt

Need a calendar view to work out the best time to visit Egypt? Here’s our month-by-month breakdown.

  • January – a great time for inland Egypt, a bad time for coastal and desert areas. Christmas and New Year are busy times!
  • February – best for Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan, when temperatures are moderate, and sandstorms are yet to arrive.
  • March – the perfect month for a Nile cruise or a slightly cooler coastal vacation.
  • April – any destination on the Red Sea Coast will be comfortably hot before the summer months.
  • May – a good month for visiting the Egyptian Mediterranean coast, and the last month of moderate heat across inland Egypt.
  • June – avoid inland Egypt (including Cairo) and stick to the coast. It’s going to be hot!
  • July – one of the hottest months of the year. Inland Egypt and Siwa Oasis will be unbearably hot.
  • August – like July, even the locals struggle inland with the heat. Stick to the coast!
  • September – entering fall, most areas of Egypt start to cool off, but inland Egypt (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan) will still be too much for those with poor heat tolerance.
  • October – the best month for the Western Desert, Siwa Oasis, and Cairo. Days won’t be too hot or crowded, and the nights won’t be too cold.
  • November – entering the winter months, it’s a good time for seeing the pyramids and other Cairo attractions .
  • December – too cold on the coast, but inland destinations will be at a comfortable warm temperature. This is peak season, so be prepared for crowds!

Important Dates When Traveling to Egypt

The best time to visit Egypt might coincide with one of these cultural events or seasons. They aren’t a reason to cancel your trip, just make sure you’re aware of what to expect!

During New Year and Christmas (celebrated on January 7 th ) Egypt is incredibly busy with both tourists and celebrating locals. At this time of year, prices are typically higher too.

Ramadan , the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a period of fasting. During this time, tourist sites may have shorter opening hours and you won’t see many locals eating or drinking in public. It’s best to stay respectful and not eat or drink illustriously in front of others (though most tourist establishments serving food will operate as normal).

In 2024, Ramadan is expected to start around March 12 th and last for roughly a month. The 2025 Ramadan start date for Egypt is expected to be around March 2 nd .

The Khamsin wind can cause travel disruptions in March and sometimes April through June. It is hot, dry, and dusty wind blowing across Egypt from the Saharah desert, which can cause delayed flights. The Khamsin can also make the air cloudy for photography!

Even though Egypt is hot and dry, there are still rainy seasons . For coastal cities like Alexandria, there may be infrequent rain in November, December, and January. You’re unlikely to be caught in rainfall inland, however. Likewise, the Red Sea can get a little bit rough in December, so this is not the best month to visit for scuba diving and snorkeling.

When is the best time to visit Egypt?

  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April, when temperatures are cooler, but still pleasantly warm across the country. This makes exploring the busy streets of Cairo, visiting the Pyramids in the desert, and exploring ancient Pharaonic tombs more comfortable and enjoyable.

The summer season (May to September) is hot, although the high temperatures are alleviated by very dry air, air conditioning, far fewer visitors and lower prices. This means summer is still a viable season for your trip. There also tends to be a bit of a breeze on the Nile, making a river cruise a good choice during this period.

Best Time to Visit Egypt

The best time to visit Egypt is tricky to pinpoint, as Egypt has a warm climate year-round and the country’s main attractions are open all year. A trip to Egypt at any time of the year is sure to be a memorable experience, but the best time to visit Egypt depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. From the Nile to the Sphinx to the Valley of Kings and the Great Pyramids, there’s no shortage of incredible sights to see in Egypt. And there’s also plenty to do, like camel rides in the desert or snorkeling in the Red Sea. So when is the best time to visit Egypt? Read on for more information about when to go, and how to make sure you get the most out of your trip.

Summer: Best for the Heatseeker

sinai summer egypt

During the hot summer months, from June to August, temperatures in Egypt can reach as high as 40°C (104°F). If you were wondering just how hot is Egypt, here’s one way to find out! The plus side of this extreme heat is that it makes sightseeing easier since many attractions are open longer. But if you’re not used to sweltering temperatures, or don’t want to deal with the harsh sun all day long, then this might not be the best option for you.

If summer is your only option but you’re not a fan of the heat, you may want to break up your trip by visiting Israel . The cooler temperatures in the north of Israel make it an ideal escape from the heat of Egypt, and Israel has plenty to offer, like Tel Aviv and the Old City of Jerusalem. You can also escape to the beaches along the Red Sea, which usually boast temperatures closer to 30°C (86°F) and cooling waters. In addition to beautiful beaches, you’ll find plenty of water sports like snorkeling and scuba diving in some of the world’s most spectacular coral reefs, like those in the Sinai Peninsula . Take a look at where we recommend you stay in the Sinai to best soak up the sun.

Winter: Best for the Sightseer

pyramids of giza in winter

The winter months of December to February are the most popular time for visitors to Egypt and are generally considered the best time for sightseeing. This is when temperatures in Egypt range from a comfortable 15-20°C (60-68°F), perfect for strolling around the ancient sites and exploring. This season also sees fewer tourists, making it easier to get tickets or book accommodations without worrying about availability.

This is the best time to visit Egyptian pyramids in Cairo , one of the main reasons many people plan a trip to Egypt. The Pyramids of Giza are open from 8 am to 4 pm daily during this season, though if you want to witness a spectacular sunset over them, you’ll need to arrange for special access through your hotel or tour operator, which is something Tourist Egypt can arrange on a custom tour . Take a look at our guide of how to get to the pyramids . You could also visit iconic destinations like the Valley of Kings or cruise down the Nile , both being open year-round.

Spring: Best for Festival Fans

festival in cairo cultural egypt best time to visit

Spring is a great time to visit Egypt, as it’s the season of festivals. From April through June, the country hosts many events like Sham el Nessim (the Spring Festival) and Sinai Liberation Day in April, and potentially Ramadan, depending on when it falls throughout the year. During Ramadan, you can expect live music performances and colorful decorations throughout Egypt’s cities. If you’re looking for an exciting cultural experience with locals in a festive mood, this is the time for you! But be aware that business hours may be shortened due to fasting during Ramadan, so plan accordingly.

Spring is also the time for outdoor activities, as it’s the best time to visit Egypt weather-wise. The sun is warm but not overly hot, and the days are generally dry with only occasional showers. It’s a great time to explore Cairo, Egypt’s capital. As well as this, if you’d like to explore the countryside and desert, this is the ideal season.

Fall: Best for Historians & Outdoorsmen

ancient egypt tomb luxor

The best time to visit Egypt for culture and history buffs is in the fall. The cooler temperatures of autumn make it the ideal time for exploring ancient Egyptian monuments, temples, tombs, and other historical sites, such as the stunning temples of Abu Simbel, located on the Nile River. The temples are open year-round, but they’re most impressive during autumn and winter when temperatures are cooler.

The cooler temperatures also make autumn the best time to visit Egypt for hiking in the desert, especially if you’re planning extended treks. The milder temperatures are more bearable, and there is less chance of dehydration or heat exhaustion. Some of the best hiking in Egypt can be found in the Sinai Peninsula or around Luxor , where you’ll find plenty of breathtaking views and cultural attractions like the Colossi of Memnon and the remains of the Library of Alexandria for the adventurous spirit.

Ramadan: Best for Culture Enthusiasts

ramadan egypt cairo time to visit

Ramadan is the most popular time to visit Egypt for those looking for a cultural experience . During this holy month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, but there are plenty of daytime activities available. In Cairo and other cities, you can be part of traditional festivals such as Eid al-Fitr or enjoy nightly entertainment with live music and dancing in restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Visiting mosques and other religious sites during Ramadan is also a great way to experience the culture of Egypt and learn more about Islam, Egypt’s main religion.

Ramadan is also the best time of year to visit Egypt in terms of cost. Egypt offers some of the best deals on flights and accommodation, as prices tend to be lower during this period. You should know, however, that alcohol is not available in most places during Ramadan, so it’s best to wait until after the month has ended if you plan to drink while you’re in Egypt. Also, Ramadan begins at a different time each year, as it follows the lunar calendar, so it’s best to check when it is before planning your trip.

Do You Sphinx You Know When to Go?

So what time of year is best to visit Egypt? Well, the best time to visit depends largely on what kind of experience you’re looking for. If you want mild temperatures and are flexible with your dates, visiting in spring or autumn may be the ideal choice. For beach lovers, summer is a good option, and winter is perfect if you want to see all the sights with time to spare. But no matter when you choose to go, there’s no shortage of incredible sights to explore in Egypt!

With some planning and preparation, your trip can be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. There are plenty of options for tours to go on to make your vacation effortless, such as daily group tours , package tours , and private tours , all of which are offered whenever you want to go.

The Best Time To Visit Egypt: Complete Weather Guide

If you are trying to work out the best time to visit Egypt, the advice in this travel post will help you plan the perfect trip.

Egypt is a popular destination steeped in history and culture with some of the world’s most iconic ancient wonders. However, you don’t want to be wandering around the Abu Simbel temples or the Valley of the Kings in the sweltering heat – it’s just no fun.

But whether you dream of a Nile River cruise, exploring the Giza pyramids, or simply soaking up the sun in one of the Red Sea resorts, there’s a perfect time to experience it all, and that information is in this Egypt weather guide.

So, grab your sun hat and let’s dive into the best time to visit Egypt.

My Favourite Time of Year to Visit Egypt

I have visited Egypt three times so far and will no doubt return in the future. I travelled to Sharm el-Sheikh in April and October to make the most of beach time, snorkelling and scuba diving, and the weather was fabulous. My last visit to Hurghada and Luxor was also in the peak tourist season of April.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t as warm as is customary, and while my holiday coincided with the time when the annual scirocco hot winds and sand storms can arrive, I encountered the opposite. We had cold winds and sat on our sun loungers wearing hoodies. It is hard to believe it’s not always hot in Egypt, but it is another sign of climate change (according to the staff in our resort).

I took a 2-day tour from Hurghada to Luxor to see the temples and tombs, and the temperature was warmer than at the coast. However, in my photos, you can see me wearing a denim jacket because I am always cold no matter where I am, even in places like Dubai and the Abu Dhabi Desert!

Walking around the temples in Luxor and visiting the Valley of the Kings was very pleasant, but I kept my hoodie on as the tombs were a little chilly. And while visiting the Pharoah’s tombs in April was busy, we could still take lots of photographs (yes, it is allowed without a flash) and spend time immersing ourselves in thousands of years worth of history without feeling rushed.

Weather in egypt from october to april: the best months to visit.

If you’re looking for the optimal time to visit Egypt, you’ll want to plan your trip during the cooler months, from October to April. During this popular time of the year, Egypt enjoys sunny days with milder temperatures, making outdoor exploration of the historic sites much more comfortable.

Egypt Weather Overview

  • October to November: This is considered the shoulder season, with temperatures in October ranging from 30°C (90°F) and dropping to 20°C (70°F) in November. It’s ideal for sightseeing, as the summer heat has subsided, but it’s not too cold to enjoy the outdoors.
  • December to January: The winter months in Egypt bring cooler temperatures, but it’s still quite pleasant for tourists. Daytime temperatures hover around 15°C to 20°C (60°F to 70°F), but be prepared for cooler evenings.
  • January to March : Egypt typically experiences a mix of weather in these months as the country moves into early Spring. It can be sunny and warm, with pleasant daytime temperatures, but can also turn a little chilly with occasional rainfall. Temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C (70°F to 80°F). As a result of the favourable climate, hotels, cruises, and tourist sites tend to be busy with visitors, especially during the New Year period.
  • March to April: Springtime is the high season and is the ideal time of year to visit Egypt, with average temperatures ranging from 20°C to 35°C (70°F to 100°F). The landscape is lush and green after the winter rains, making it an excellent time for photography.

What to Wear in Egypt in Spring and Autumn

Consider comfort and modesty when packing for your Spring or Autumn Egyptian adventure. Here’s a handy checklist of what to wear:

  • Lightweight Clothing: Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. Long-sleeved tops and lightweight bottoms are perfect for keeping cool while protecting your skin from the sun. Pack a shawl to wrap around the shoulders in the evenings.
  • Sunhat: Make sure to keep your head covered from the sun.
  • Sunglasses and Sunscreen: The Egyptian sun can be quite intense, so don’t forget your shades and a good sunscreen with high SPF. Factor 30 and above is recommended.
  • Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so bring comfortable, closed-toe shoes for exploring archaeological sites and cities; otherwise, you will end up with a foot full of sand!
  • Modest Attire: With respect for local customs, dress modestly when visiting religious sites. Women should carry a scarf to cover their shoulders and head if needed.
  • Swimwear: If you plan on enjoying the Red Sea or the luxurious pools at your resort, pack your swimsuit.

Weather in Egypt from May to September: Surviving the Egyptian Summer

While Egypt is captivating year-round, the scorching summer months from May to September can be challenging for tourists. If you’re prepared to brave the heat, you can still enjoy Egypt during this time. However, be ready for daytime temperatures soaring above 35°C (95°F) and sometimes even hitting 45°C (120°F) in Egypt’s hottest months.

Sandstone column in Karnak temple with sun in blue skies

April to May: During these months, you’ll find the climate starting to hot up, from 25°C to 35°C (80°F to 100°F). April is one of the best times of the year to visit Egypt. It is worth noting that, occasionally, Egypt experiences the Khamsin Wind, a brief but intense sandstorm of scorching hot winds, sometime between April and May. However, fear not, for this natural phenomenon rarely disrupts the rhythm of daily life.

The festival of Sham el-Nessim takes place on Easter Monday, following the Coptic calendar, and is a cherished tradition observed across Egypt. It’s a time when Egyptians come together to celebrate the rebirth of nature and the spirit of this ancient land.

So, if you plan to visit Egypt at Easter, prepare for it to be busy. This holiday season is among the liveliest times to explore Egypt, and as demand surges, so do prices. It’s wise to secure your accommodations and activities well in advance.

Hottest months in Egypt

June to August: These months are the height of summer in Egypt, where temperatures can soar to impressive heights between 35°C and 45°C (100°F to 120°F) and sometimes even higher. Fewer travellers brave the heat during these months, leaving an opportunity to experience Egypt’s marvels with fewer crowds visiting the iconic sights. This is often a good time to get a bargain as prices for flights, hotels, tours, and day trips can be substantially lower than in peak season.

September to October: Temperatures in September have not changed too much from the summer season; however, cool sea breezes make it more bearable if you are planning a beach break along the Red Sea coast in Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada or one of Egypt’s other popular seaside resorts. As the months progress, the temperature starts to drop slightly from the heady 45°C (120°F) to a more manageable 30°C (90°F)

Aquatic scene in Red Sea Egypt

What to Wear in Egypt in Summer’s Extreme Heat:

  • Lightweight and Breathable Clothing: Loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing is a must to stay cool in the blistering heat.
  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are essential for protection against the intense sun.
  • Hydration: Carry a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated, and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
  • Rest: Take breaks in the shade whenever possible and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak sun hours.

Tips for Your Egyptian Adventure:

  • Plan Ahead: Egypt’s iconic attractions, such as the Pyramids and the Valley of the Kings, can get crowded, so book your tours and accommodations in advance.
  • Stay Hydrated: The desert climate can cause dehydration, so always carry water bottles and drink regularly.
  • Respect Local Customs: Be mindful of the local culture, particularly when visiting religious sites. Dress modestly and ask for permission before taking photos of locals.
  • Bargaining Skills: Haggling is common in Egypt’s markets (souks), so sharpen your bargaining skills when shopping for souvenirs.
  • Local Cuisine: Don’t miss out on trying authentic Egyptian dishes like koshari, falafel, and fresh seafood by the Red Sea.

Egypt is a destination that promises enchantment, adventure, and a deep dive into history. Choosing the right time to visit is vital to unlocking the full potential of your trip to Egypt. So, whether you’re exploring the temples of Luxor, cruising on the Nile, or basking in the Red Sea’s beauty, remember to pack accordingly, stay safe, and savour every moment of Egypt’s intoxicating charm.

Egypt Vacations

The Best Time to Visit Egypt

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT EGYPT

The best time to visit Egypt is a personal choice that all boils down to personal choice, your travel style, and your priorities. With its rich history, breathtaking landmarks, and vibrant culture, Egypt is a popular travel destination for many. However, the timing of your visit can greatly affect your experience.

Planning a trip to Egypt requires careful consideration of the ideal time to visit. Whether you prefer cooler temperatures for outdoor activities or want to avoid peak tourist season crowds, understanding the different seasons and their pros and cons will help you plan a memorable and enjoyable trip. In this article, we will discuss the best time to visit Egypt based on various factors so you can look forward to a truly unforgettable vacation.

The Best Time to Visit Egypt for a Lively and Vibrant Atmosphere

If you are hoping to enjoy a fantastically lively and vibrant atmosphere during your trip to Egypt, then you should consider visiting towards the end of December or early in January. The atmosphere is really amazing at this time of the year, and many people would consider this to be the best time to visit Egypt. However, there are four things which you need to be aware of:

Everything costs more, including hotel accommodation, package tours and Nile River cruises. This is especially true if you visit during the Christmas, New Year and/or Easter holidays. You can save quite a bit of money and still enjoy a lively and vibrant atmosphere if you visit shortly before or shortly after the holidays.

If you visit at any point in December, January or February, expect to encounter huge crowds of tourists at nearly all of Egypt’s popular tourist attractions. In fact at attractions such as the Giza Pyramids you’ll find that it is virtually impossible to take photos of the pyramids without having loads of other people in your photos unless you get to the site very early in the morning before the tour buses start arriving.

Hotel and Nile Cruise Availability

Hotels and Nile cruise ships are often fully booked at this time of the year, so be sure to make your hotel reservations well in advance if you are planning on visiting Egypt in December, January, or February. The same applies to Nile River cruise reservations, which should also be made well in advance in order to avoid disappointment. Egypt tour packages should also be booked well in advance.

December, January and February are Egypt’s winter months, with January being Egypt’s coldest month. If you plan on visiting in December, January and February, you can expect comfortable temperatures during the day but the evenings can be positively cold. Compared to many other countries, Egypt typically enjoys mild winters, but be sure to pack in some warm layers of clothing to wear in the evenings and a light jacket to wear on cooler days. For people who want to enjoy cool weather the winter season would be the best time to visit Egypt.

The Best Time to Visit Egypt for Great Weather and Smaller Crowds

If you want to enjoy great sunny weather, and at the same time avoid the main influx of tourists, consider visiting in October, November, March, or April. For many people this would be the best time to visit Egypt.

By the time October and November arrives, the worst of the summer heat has passed and temperatures have started to drop. You can expect maximum daytime highs of around 33° C and minimum daytime lows of around 23° C. The evenings, however, can still be quite cool, so be sure to pack in a light jacket to wear in the evenings. Remember, these are maximum daytime temperatures and minimum daytime temperatures. On most days the temperatures tend to be somewhere in the middle.

All in all, October and November are great months for visiting Egypt and for visiting the country’s many archaeological sites. It is also a great time of the year to enjoy a beach holiday at one of Egypt’s coastal resorts such as Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada or Mars Alam. In fact, visiting during one of these months could very well be the best time to visit Egypt.

By the time March and April arrive, the cool winter temperatures have passed and temperatures have started to rise. Expect maximum temperatures of around 27° C and minimum temperatures during the day of around 20° C. Once again, night-time temperatures can be quite cool so pack accordingly.

In October and November tourist numbers are increasing but you will still avoid the huge crowds of tourists that are common from December to February. By the time March and April arrive many tourists have already left but because many people feel that this is the best time to visit Egypt you will still see lots of tourists visiting popular tourist attractions.

The Best Time to Visit Egypt for Great Deals and Small Tourist Crowds

If getting the best possible deals is important to you, then we would recommend visiting anytime from the beginning of May to the end of September. On the tourism calendar this is considered to be the low season and as a result, everything tends to cost less. In May and September the weather can be very hot but providing you dress appropriately, the weather is tolerable.

In May, expect maximum temperatures during the day to range between 30 to 36 ° C while temperatures at night tend to range between 19 and 24 degrees Celsius. In September, expect daytime temperatures to range between 25 and 36° C while night-time temperatures tend to be much the same as they are in May.

If you choose to visit in May or September you also won’t encounter huge crowds of tourists. Most tourists have either already left or they haven’t yet arrived. If you can tolerate the sort of temperatures mentioned above, then either of these two months could be the best time to visit Egypt.

Visiting Egypt during the Summer Season

June July and August are Egypt’s summer months, with July being the hottest month of the year. For most people, summer is not the best time to visit Egypt. Also known as the scorching season, temperatures during the day tend to range between 34 and 40° C or even a bit higher. On the other hand, the evenings are almost always pleasantly warm.

The high temperatures which are common during the summer season can make you feel very uncomfortable when visiting popular historical sites like the pyramids, Karnak Temple, the Abu Simbel Temples, etc. If you do choose to visit during the scorching season and you are planning on visiting Egypt’s famous archaeological sites, we would recommend that you try to visit any and all historical sites early in the morning or in the late afternoon in order to avoid the worst of the summer heat.

If you can tolerate the scorching heat, and if avoiding tourist crowds is high on your agenda, then visiting during one of these three summer months could very well be the best time to visit Egypt. These are Egypt’s quietest months as far as tourists are concerned. In fact you will find that many of Egypt’s popular tourist attractions of virtually deserted during the summer months.

With all of the above having been said, the summer months can be a great time to visit Egypt for people who want to enjoy some time on the beach and some water sports on Egypt’s Red Sea coast. In fact, July is considered to be the best month for scuba diving, although scuba diving along Egypt’s coastline is fantastic regardless of when you choose to visit.

If you are willing to pay a bit more for your vacation and you want to enjoy it the most pleasant weather then the peak season, which is also known as the high season, would be the best time to visit Egypt. On the tourism calendar, the high season runs from the beginning of October to the end of April.

If you want to save some money by taking advantage of the very best possible deals, and if you can tolerate the hot weather, then the low season would be the best time to visit Egypt. The low season in Egypt runs from the beginning of May to the end of September.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Egypt?

Wondering when is the best time to visit Egypt? You’re in luck. This guide gives you an in-depth breakdown of the best months to visit Egypt and which attractions to explore.

If there’s one thing I found during my trip to Egypt, it’s that this destination requires a lot of preparation – from knowing what items to pop on your packing list to choosing the ideal attractions to include in your itinerary (there’s only so much you can cover in a two week trip).

But aside from this, weather, religious holidays, and peak tourist seasons are all things to consider before you book your flights. It can seem overwhelming, so that’s why I’ve written this guide to take the stress out of planning your trip.

Ready to discover the best time to travel to Egypt? Let’s go.

When’s the Best Time To Visit Egypt: At a Glance

Al Nasir Muhammad Mosque Citadel Cairo

Egypt’s Mediterranean climate boasts dry, hot summers and cool, rainy winters. While coastal cities like Alexandria see the most of the annual rainfall, temperatures vary widely across the inland desert areas.

If you’d like to take on the attractions and landmarks in your Egypt itinerary seamlessly, it would be best for you to plan your trip according to the weather in each region, the travel season, and national holidays or festivities that may impact your travel plans.

I’ll level with you… Summer is too hot. Avoid visiting during the hottest months as you’ll end up a sweaty mess and you’ll struggle to enjoy yourself – lots of the main attractions in Egypt are outside, after all. Typical.

The Best Time To Visit Egypt: In Detail

What is the best month to travel to egypt.

Karnak Temple Luxor

If you’re looking to travel through the country and see its top attractions without competing with large crowds for views and accommodation, October is the best time of the year to visit Egypt.

October falls just before the peak season. During this time, tourist arrivals are still relatively low compared to the high peak season, and hotel prices are also quite reasonable. Daytime temperatures drop while the nights become cooler, making it the best month to visit Egypt.

You can expect daily temperatures to average around 30°C, so pack light and airy clothing. But, it’s good to also bring a windbreaker or puffer jacket for those occasional wet days and chilly autumn evenings.

When’s High Season in Egypt?

Khan El-Khalili - Cairo, Egypt

Unsurprisingly, winter is the peak visitation season in Egypt. Most travellers flock to Egypt between December and February, thanks to the mild daytime temperatures and cool nights.

During this season, the most famous tourist attractions get crowded, while hotel prices and other amenities like tours and food prices skyrocket. The cost of travelling to Egypt is also significantly higher during this time.

The Cheapest Time To Visit Egypt

Khan El Khalili - Cairo, Egypt

Now that you know when’s the most expensive time to travel to Egypt, let’s explore a more budget-friendly alternative. The cheapest time to go to Egypt is between January and February.

This is right at the end of the peak season, so hotels and airlines tend to encourage an extended stay from tourists by offering discounted prices and deals. The best part about it is that although daytime temperatures will begin to rise, the evening storms will reign down, leaving behind a trail of cool and tepid nights.

If you’re visiting Egypt during this time, I encourage you to take advantage of the low prices and calm weather. Go on a desert star-watching tour or enjoy an epic night out with a vibrant dinner cruise on the Nile River .

Visiting Egypt During Ramadan

Khan El-Khalili - Cairo, Egypt

Due to Egypt being a predominantly Islamic nation, the month-long religious event of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr celebration following it may significantly affect your travel plans. The closing times of restaurants, shops in bazaars, and some tour providers might be earlier than usual.

Occurring in April or May, Ramadan is a holy period where Muslims worldwide fast from sunrise to sunset as a symbol of spiritual rejuvenation. At the end of the fast, Muslims everywhere enjoy a three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr.

Many locals gather in the streets with friends and family to mark the end of Ramadan, and tourists are welcome to join in on these celebrations.

While you will be able to eat and drink during the day, it’s best to keep this private to respect local culture. This is something to consider if you dream of perusing bazaars and scoffing street food.

Best Time To Travel to Egypt To…

Cruise the nile.

Nile Felucca

The ideal time to cruise down the Nile is between October and April. The pleasant weather allows you to take in the stunning sights throughout Egypt, experience breathtaking sunsets, and perhaps take part in some fun water activities like hang gliding.

Taking a Nile River cruise is undeniably a must-do when visiting Egypt. This iconic 6,650 km waterway is not only the longest in Africa but also the lifeline for many civilisations past and present.

A day cruise along this natural wonder takes you through several fishing villages, meeting local fishermen along the way. You’ll also enjoy swiftly getting to landmarks in Aswan and visiting the majestic Temples of Abu Simbel without having to deal with Cairo’s impeding traffic.

Visit the Pyramids

Camels and Pyramids of Giza Cairo, Egypt

Another must-see attraction is the Pyramids of Giza . To see this world-renowned cultural landmark and get the most out of your trip, visit between October and March.

More specifically, book a half-day tour between 10 am and midday to avoid the morning rush. Temperatures will be slightly warmer, but nothing a bottle of water and a sunhat can’t handle.

Explore the Western Desert

What’s the point of visiting a desert country and not seeing the desert, right? For these types of excursions, the best time to travel Egypt’s arid lands is spring or autumn.

During these seasons, temperatures are friendly. From March to May and between September and October are the shoulder seasons. And in addition to the favourable weather, prices are also at their lowest.

You can enjoy exploring the Western Desert, from camping to thrilling quad biking tours, and experience Egypt in a unique way. But, spring travellers must take note of the annual “khamsin” winds.

Enjoy the Red Sea

By now, you probably think summer is the worst time to visit Egypt, but that’s not necessarily true. As I mentioned before, temperatures are generally lower along the coast than inland.

So the ideal time is June to September if you’d like to enjoy plenty of water activities like scuba diving, dolphin-watching, and snorkelling in the Red Sea .

July and August are also optimum travel times to visit the Red Sea. But make sure to book well in advance as this is when many tourists and affluent Egyptians flock to the coast to escape the sweltering Cairo weather.

Best Time to Travel to Egypt: Region by Region

Philae Temple

Egypt has physiographic divisions into four major regions. These regions experience vastly different weather patterns throughout the year.

From boiling conditions across Egypt’s vast deserts to cool coastal regions, with excess amenities for water activities, it’s not hard to see why travelling here may be challenging. Because temperatures across regions tend to vary in winter and summer, it’s best to plan your trip around specific landmarks and attractions you want to see the most.

Do this while considering the peak season price surge and each month’s annual festivities and celebrations, which could potentially throw off your perfectly planned itinerary.

So take note of the following best times to visit Egypt, and design your trip accordingly.

Region Best Time to Visit

Nile Valley & Delta September-November

Western Desert March-May; September-October

Eastern Desert October-April

Sinai Peninsula December-February

Best Time to Visit Egypt: By Season

Spring in egypt .

March – April

Aswan

Spring is an excellent time to visit Egypt. Temperatures are moderate and tend to fluctuate between 22°C and 32°C during the day. But beware, these best months to travel to Egypt also have an erratic climate – ranging from clear warm days to strong, unpredictable winds.

Key Events and Things To Do in Egypt in Spring

  • Abu El Haggag Moulid is a 5-day festival in honour of the 13th-century Sufi leader, Yusuf Abu Al Haggag. This happens in Luxor, typically two to four weeks before Ramadan.
  • Everyone in Egypt celebrates Sham El Nessim because it predates Islam and Christianity. The April holiday welcomes the spring season following the Coptic Easter.

Pros of Travelling to Egypt in Spring

  • Spring is a shoulder season, boasting lower prices and less crowded attractions.
  • Temperatures are pleasant, allowing you to enjoy water activities like snorkelling in the Red Sea .

Cons of Travelling to Egypt in Spring

  • Unpredictable sandstorms are common during this time and can hinder your ability to see some top attractions.
  • Egypt’s Muslims will observe Ramadan for a month, after which they’ll celebrate Eid al Fitr’s religious festival.

Summer in Egypt

Aswan - Sunset

The summer brings scorching days, hot air, and even warm oceans, making it not an ideal time to go to Egypt. Daily temperatures range from 23°C to 36°C, making visiting inland landmarks like Luxor Temple and Valley of the Kings nearly impossible.

But summer is not all doom and gloom – use the warm weather to your benefit by heading to the coast for a much-needed escape and plenty of seaside activities.

Key Events and Things To Do in Egypt in Summer

  • The two-week-long celebration, Wafaa El-Nil, commemorates the ancient annual flooding of the Nile.
  • Revolution Day celebrations in July mark the anniversary of Egypt’s 1952 revolution.

Pros of Travelling to Egypt in Summer

  • In the off-season (summer), there’s a significant price drop for hotels and tours.
  • Attractions will have lesser crowds, giving you uninterrupted sightseeing opportunities at the country’s most revered monuments.

Cons of Travelling to Egypt in Summer

  • Temperatures are sweltering, making it nearly impossible to go on full-day trips (the deserts are an absolute no-go).
  • In some regions, like Aswan, nighttime temperatures can drop to 0°C.

Autumn / Fall in Egypt

September – November

Hot Air Ballooning Luxor

Like spring, autumn is a shoulder season boasting cooler temperatures and budget-friendly prices. This is the best time to visit Egypt as the sun isn’t as harsh and the number of tourists is still minimal.

Key Events and Things To Do in Egypt in Autumn

  • Mawlid al-Nabi or Al-Mouled El-Nabawy in October is when Muslims across Egypt observe the prophet Muhammad’s birthday.
  • Armed Forces Day is an annual celebration marking the start of the 1973 October War with Israel.
  • Abu Simbel Sun Festival in October, when Egyptians celebrate Ramses II’s birthday.

Pros of Travelling to Egypt in Autumn

  • Ideal temperatures for visiting attractions and swimming in the Red Sea.
  • Fewer traveller influx as compared to winter.

Cons of Travelling to Egypt in Autumn

  • Hotel and air travel prices begin to increase as temperatures become cooler.

Winter in Egypt

December – February

Khan El-Khalili - Cairo, Egypt

Winter is Egypt’s peak season. Tourists flood major attractions and landmarks during this time, thanks to the moderate daytime temperature and cool nights. Average daily temperatures range from 18°C to 26°C.

Key Events and Things To Do in Egypt in Winter

  • Abu Simbel Sun Festival in February. Egyptians celebrate Ramses II’s ascension to the throne.
  • Coptic Christmas celebrations happen in the first week of January.
  • The Egypt International Art Fair is a 3-day event from Friday to Sunday. This occurs right at the end of February.

Pros of Travelling to Egypt in Winter

  • The weather is ideal for travel throughout most of Egypt, making it the best time of year to visit Egypt.
  • Most amenities are open, and closing times tend to span later than usual.

Cons of Travelling to Egypt in Winter

  • During peak season, hotels, airfare, and tours tend to skyrocket – this may affect your ability to see all of the country’s top attractions.
  • Crowds are larger, making it challenging to relish the beauty of Egypt’s wonders without anyone getting in the way.

When to Travel to Egypt: Practical Tips + Tricks

  • When travelling in Egypt, it’s crucial to note certain risk areas that tourists are highly advised to avoid. This is due to various reasons, like terrorist activity near the borders of Libya and Sudan.
  • Consider what you want to do on your trip to help you figure out the best time to go to Egypt. Remember to consider the weather, hotel prices, and religious holidays in the region.
  • The Egyptian capital is typically the central hub containing various hotels and tour providers. Book one of the best hotels in Cairo , and enjoy many of the nearby landmarks and attractions.

Best time to visit egypt.

Egypt is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is negligible, except on the coast, with rain usually occurring during the winter months (December to March).

During the summer months (from June to August), daily temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) - perfect for snorkeling and soaking up the sun on the beaches of Sinai, but can prove challenging for some in the crowded streets and souqs of Cairo.

Choose to escape the crowds by traveling from March to May or September to November when the weather is milder, and there's the opportunity to experience Egypt during Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid (which marks the breaking of the fast). If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it's important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours.

Culture and customs

Life in Egypt has been in a state of flux since the 2011 revolution. Many of the issues that motivated so many to take to the streets in protest continue to be points of contention, but Egyptians remain hopeful, relying on religion, family and humor to get them through, like they have for thousands of years. A strong sense of community binds people across the country. Families and communities support each other and there is a prevailing sense that everyone is in it together. For all these reasons, most express great pride in being Egyptian, despite their nation’s recent turmoil.

As a largely Muslim country (about 90% of the population is Muslim while most of the remaining 10% identify as Coptic Christian), Islam permeates daily activities. Life revolves around the five daily prayers and everything is closed on Friday, the Muslim holy day. A wide array of cultural norms, including how people dress and interact with the opposite sex, are influenced by religion. Women are largely defined by their role as a mother and matron of the house, whereas men are expected to be the provider.

Many Egyptians consider their country the gateway between the West and the rest of the Arab world, and take pride in their ability to mix tradition with modern influences. This mixing is most apparent in major cities, such as Cairo and Alexandria, where American fast-food chains can be found next to traditional cafes, secular attitudes are more common, and pop music rings through city streets.

Food and drink

With fragrant spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicious sweets on offer, culinary adventures in Egypt are guaranteed. On many Intrepid trips you'll be given the opportunity to dine with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the ingredients.

Things to try in Egypt

1. Hamam mahshi

A north African delicacy, hamam – roasted pigeon stuffed with cracked wheat and rice – can be found on the menu of most traditional Egyptian restaurants. You may need a few to fill up though, as they don’t contain a lot of meat. And be careful of all the tiny bones.

2. Ta'ameya (falafel)

Crunchy on the outside, and moist on the inside, these deep-fried balls of spiced fava beans are a Middle Eastern vegetarian staple. Usually served in a pita with salad, pickles, and sesame-based tahina - buy it at a street stall for a quick, cheap meal.

Shops specializing in this popular ‘poor man’s dish’ can be found throughout Cairo. A hearty mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, chickpeas, and fried onions, koshary is topped with a tomato-vinegar sauce.

4. Ful medames

Don't leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic, and lemon juice - add some spice by seasoning with chili paste and eat with bread.

5. Pastries

Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets, and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage ‘Life is short, eat dessert first’.

Egypt is a mostly Muslim country, and any consumption of alcohol here is relatively low-key. There are many fantastic alternatives. Juice stands are common on main streets offering freshly squeezed banana, guava, or mango juice. Karkadai is a chilled, crimson drink brewed from hibiscus leaves (served hot in the winter). And tea (or shai) is the beverage of choice for most Egyptians, which is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Geography and environment

Located in the northeast corner of Africa, Egypt shares its borders with Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Libya, and Sudan, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The two seas are connected by the man-made Suez Canal.

The remote triangle-shaped peninsula is largely characterized by limestone and desert, but also has a vibrant coral reef along the Red Sea coastline. Hot, dry desert covers most of the country’s terrain, with the Western Desert occupying much of the west, and the Arabian (or Eastern) Desert stretching the length of the eastern coast. These two regions are dissected by the Nile River, which runs the length of the country, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile Valley, a narrow fertile band extending from the river, is the country’s only fertile land and where 98% of the population lives.

History and government

Recent history.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the infamous pint-sized French leader, invaded Egypt in 1798, seeking to set up a French colony. However, not long after, the French were repelled, and Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Empire once again.

From 1882, the British Army occupied Egypt to protect the Suez Canal. Muhammad Ali officially ruled from the early 1800s, and his family and successors continued to rule for decades (alongside and during British occupation) until overthrown by a military coup in 1952.

During World War II, Egypt became a crucial element in Britain's defense. The Italian Army tried to advance into Egypt in 1940 but was stopped by the British Army at Mersa Matruh. Egypt continued to serve as a vital base for British troops during World War II and despite the disruption, Egypt's shopkeepers and retail trade benefitted from the thousands of Allied troops staying in Egypt.

In 1953, Egypt was officially declared a republic, and a year later, Colonel Nasser was declared Prime Minister, then President. In 1979, after decades of confrontation with neighboring Israel, the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. This agreement made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel as a country - a significant step in the peace process. More recently, in February 2011, large-scale protests and mass demonstrations resulted in the removal of President Mubarak after decades of autocratic rule.

Early history

Ancient Egypt has been the focus of much fascination, investigation, speculation, and intrigue. It's hard to escape the education system without having studied Ancient Egypt in some way. Drawn in by the mighty pyramids, mysterious hieroglyphics, distinct burial rituals and animal-headed gods - scholars, students, historians, and travelers are all amazed by this civilization which has endured cycles of dynastic rule, invasion, and natural disasters.

Through key archaeological finds, historians have been able to unravel some of the mysteries of this great land. What is known is that the daily life of the average Egyptian usually involved working in agriculture with the waters of the Nile providing fertile ground for planting crops. Egyptians usually lived in modest homes with children and domestic pets. Professions were usually inherited - so if your father was a farmer, then so were you.

While most Egyptians led simple lives, dynasties of Pharaohs led lavish lifestyles, with the most well-known being Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun, and Cleopatra. Huge monuments, imposing pyramids, golden artifacts, and detailed paintings all hold details about pharaonic rule and succession, as well as commonly held beliefs about religion and the afterlife.

Spanning centuries and full of drama worthy of a soap opera, the epic history of Ancient Egypt is complex and we suggest you read about it before visiting.

Top 10 ancient wonders of Egypt

1. grand designs.

The original grand design - monumental and magnificent - the Pyramids of Giza are an impressive achievement in ancient engineering. Towering above the desert sands and standing proudly for centuries, the first glimpse of these stunning structures will render visitors breathless.

2. Stony enigma

Be captivated by the mysterious aura of the Great Sphinx of Giza. This monolithic mythical beast possesses a lion’s body and a human head - and has sat quietly in the desert sands for eons. Gaze at the Sphinx and try to work out the riddle of its existence.

3. Mighty Nile River

No trip to Egypt is complete without visiting the Nile River - the life force of Egypt that has flowed for centuries. A provider of irrigation, an essential travel route, home to hippos and crocodiles, and now a source of leisure for locals and travelers alike, the Nile is an aquatic link to Egypt’s ancient heritage.

4. Terrific temples

Discover an enormous open-air museum like no other. The awe-inspiring Temples of Karnak are filled with stately statues, immense columns, and gigantic gateways. Explore this intriguing site and be left in no doubt about the brilliance of the ancient Egyptian civilization.

5. Holy mountain

Embark on a trek to the top of Mt Sinai and witness an incredible golden sunrise to remember. A place of worship for many faiths, a pilgrimage to Mt Sinai reveals stunning scenery, an ancient monastery and historic chapels. An iconic highlight of Egypt for believers and non-believers alike, Mt Sinai is not to be missed.

6. Double happiness

Located in the Nile Valley, the unique Temple of Kom Ombo is a ‘double temple’ and a rare archaeological find. Dedicated to two gods, a visit here is a true highlight of an Egyptian escapade. Marvel at the well-preserved wall reliefs, try to decipher the hieroglyphics and honour the craftsmen who created this wonder.

7. Museum magic

Step into a dazzling world of antiquity at the Egyptian Museum. Be amazed by the glittering treasures recovered from King Tutankhamun’s tomb – with jewelry, furniture, chariots and that famous gold funerary mask, this pharaoh was certainly prepared for the afterlife.

8. Roman ruins

The Roman ruins of Kom el-Dikka in Alexandria may not be the biggest, but they are certainly among the best-preserved in Egypt, if not the world. Soak up the atmosphere of the Roman amphitheater and imagine it in all its glory - packed with 800 spectators ready for action.

9. Colossal characters

Near the modern city of Luxor stand the imposing Colossi of Memnon. These massive stone statues of Amenhotep III, while badly damaged, still maintain an unmistakable air of authority. Stand below them and be dwarfed by the scale of these tremendous figures.

10. The ancient heart of Cairo

Wander the cobbled streets of Islamic Cairo and uncover the ancient heart of this chaotic city. Admire mosques, palaces and houses, and peruse the goods on offer at one of the world’s oldest bazaars. Dating back to medieval times, the Khan al-Khalili bazaar is where people have traded goods for centuries.

Souqs – or open-air bazaars – are both the best place to shop in Egypt and attractions in their own right. The biggest and most famous souq is the 500-year-old Khan El Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Within the maze of narrow streets and laneways lie stalls selling jewelry, glass, copper, spices and artisan goods, along with more standard tourist fare. Quality can vary greatly so spend some time shopping around.

Like many markets around the world, bargaining is the norm, but Egyptians take it to another level. Expect to be offered tea (it can take that long) and for elaborate theatrics from the seller. While bazaars in Cairo tend to sell everything, visit Aswan’s bazaar for spices, incense, and basketwork, and Luxor for cheaply priced alabaster figurines and vases. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Things to buy in Egypt

You’ll often see spices piled high in bazaars. In addition to making a great photo for Instagram, they’re often a good buy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind. Always buy whole spices rather than ground to ensure freshness and skip the ‘saffron’ – it’s actually safflower and tastes like dust.

2. Glassware

Hand-blown Muski glass, recognizable by its air bubbles, comes in brilliant shades of blue and green and purple and has been made in Egypt since medieval times. Be careful with this purchase though as it’s extremely fragile.

3. Cartouche

A kind of nameplate written in hieroglyphics. Most gold or silver shops sell these and many can customize them by engraving your name.

Festivals and events

Eid al-fitr.

After fasting for an entire month, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’. For three days, starting on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, people celebrate with feasts, family, and festivals. Look for vendors selling kahk cookies (nut-filled cookies covered in powdered sugar) while taking in the festivities, a tasty treat synonymous with Eid for many locals.

Eid al-Adha

Arguably the most important holiday in Egypt, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ is not one for vegetarians and vegans. About 70 days after Eid al-Fitr, sheep, and goats are slaughtered (often in the middle of the street) for a mighty feast.

Sham el-Nessim

Each year on March 21st, Egyptians celebrate the coming of spring by spending the day outdoors. Join the locals for this ancient holiday by packing a picnic and heading to a park or public garden.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

As if the two temples dedicated to Ramses II and Queen Nefertari weren’t impressive enough, they were constructed in such a way that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach its innermost chambers and illuminate three stone gods that reside within, while leaving Ptah (god of the underworld) in the dark. And those days just happen to be Ramses’s birthday (October 21) and coronation (February 21). Coincidence? We think not.

What to wear in Egypt

Summer temperatures can get very high, so light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. If you’re traveling outside of winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. Avoid packing anything in white – desert dust will quickly turn those light-colored clothes a not-so-delightful shade of brown.

The Best Time to Visit Egypt: October to April

Visit the Pyramid of Chephren

Weather Conditions:

The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April when temperatures are cooler and more comfortable for sightseeing. During this period, daytime temperatures range from 70°F to 85°F (21°C to 29°C), making it ideal for exploring the ancient ruins and other outdoor attractions. The nights can get cooler, so be sure to pack layers for early morning and evening activities. While winter (December to February) can be a bit chilly, it’s still an excellent time for sightseeing, as the cooler temperatures keep the crowds at bay.

Shoulder Seasons: May and September

Adventure to Abu Simbel

May and September are considered shoulder months in Egypt, offering a nice balance between the high season and the scorching summer months. The weather is warmer, with daytime temperatures between 85°F to 95°F (29°C to 35°C), but it’s still bearable for most travelers. This period also tends to be less crowded than the high season, providing more opportunities to explore Egypt’s wonders in relative peace.

Avoiding the Summer Heat: June to August

Temple of Queen Hatshepsut in Luxor

The summer months in Egypt can be extremely hot, with temperatures regularly exceeding 100°F (38°C) during the day. This can make sightseeing uncomfortable, especially in regions like Luxor and Aswan, where there is little shade. If you’re sensitive to heat or have health concerns, it’s best to avoid traveling during this time.

Festivals and Events:

Another factor to consider when planning your trip is the numerous festivals and events held throughout the year. One of the most significant events is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival, which occurs twice a year (in February and October). The festival marks the extraordinary phenomenon when the sun’s rays perfectly align and illuminate the inner sanctum of the Abu Simbel Temple. Another popular event is the Coptic Orthodox Christmas, celebrated on January 7th, offering a unique insight into Egypt’s Christian heritage.

Balancing Weather, Crowds, and Budget:

When planning your trip to Egypt, it’s essential to consider your priorities. If you’re seeking the best weather and fewer crowds, plan your visit between October and April. However, if you’re on a tight budget and don’t mind the heat, traveling during the off-peak summer months can save you money on flights and accommodations. By weighing the various factors, you can find the perfect time to explore the wonders of Egypt.

Conclusion:

The best time to visit Egypt largely depends on your personal preferences and priorities. However, visiting between October and April offers the most comfortable weather conditions and a more enjoyable sightseeing experience. Regardless of when you choose to travel, Egypt’s magnificent treasures are sure to leave you spellbound. So pack your bags and get ready to embark on a journey through time as you explore the ancient wonders of Egypt.

The best time to visit Egypt is during the cooler months between March and May and September and October. Egyptian summers (June to August) get sizzling hot, making sightseeing a sweaty, exhausting ordeal. Outside the scorching summer season, Egypt generally enjoys pleasant weather, with warm sunny days and crisp nights.

The coolest months of November to February are peak tourism season while December and January get especially busy. Many travelers prefer the months of September-October or March-April, which bring lower prices and fewer crowds.

Quick Facts

Seasonal overview.

Keep reading to find more about each season and the best time to visit Egypt.

Spring in Egypt – March to May

Egypt’s spring runs from March to May, bringing varying, unpredictable temperatures throughout the country. The earlier months of March and April are generally pleasant, though things start to heat up come May. Spring also brings strong winds, which whip up desert dust to create ferocious sandstorms, especially in rural areas.

Highlights:

  • Enjoy comfortable temperatures in March-April.
  • Experience thinner crowds and lower prices than winter.

Travel tips:

  • Bring a face covering or purchase one in a bazaar to protect against sandstorms.

Fjords, Pharaohs or Koalas? Time to Plan for Your Next Eclipse.

If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.

  • Share full article

A small, black disk surrounded by a bright, white halo suspended in a mostly dark sky over the still waters of a lake in which dim, golden light from the horizon is reflecting. There are dark hills and mountains beyond the lake.

By Danielle Dowling

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

egypt tour best time

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

Vladimir Putin has told the president of Iran he hoped all parties in the Middle East would show restraint, according to Russian state media.

In a phone call with Ebrahim Raisi, Mr Putin discussed in detail the suspected Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria on 1 April, reported RIA Novosti, citing the Kremlin.

Mr Raisi said Iran's retaliatory missile and drone attack against Israel on Saturday was "forced and limited" and emphasised he had no interest in further escalation, the report said.

Early this morning we reported that while the West strongly condemned Iran's attack on Israel, China took a different approach.

Foreign minister Wang Yi told his Iranian counterpart that China appreciated Iran's emphasis on not targeting regional and neighbouring countries, and that Beijing believed Iran could "handle the situation well and spare the region further turmoil".

Now reports suggest Israel is disappointed with China's response to Saturday's attack, when Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones.

"We were hoping for stronger condemnation and clear acknowledgment of Israel’s right to defend itself," said Yuval Waks, the deputy chief of the Israeli mission in China, according to the The South China Morning Post.

"Unfortunately, we did not see that, which is why we were unhappy with the statement," he said.

He said Israel was aware of the "good bilateral relations" between China and Iran, but Israel needed to express its "grave concerns to the Chinese regarding Iran's negative role in our region and its support of terror groups".

The Israeli government is split between those who want to hit Iran hard and those who do not want to waste the international community's support, says military analyst Michael Clarke.

The Israeli foreign minister has already been on the diplomatic offensive, urging 32 nations to enact sanctions against Iran.

Clarke said the external world was leaning on Israel "very hard", attempting to leverage the amount of help Israel received from allies in defending against Iran's attack, and the number of ballistic missiles that malfunctioned, to urge Israel to exercise restraint.

"What the external world is saying to Israel is 'look, you were lucky, and you had our help, now don't spoil it by being so aggressive that we think twice about giving you that help again and you might not be so lucky the second time'", said Clarke.

Jordan has accused Benjamin Netanyahu of seeking to draw attention away from Gaza by escalating the confrontation with Iran.

Foreign minister Ayman Safadi said the international community should stop the Israeli prime minister from "stealing" attention away from Gaza.

He said Iran had responded to the attack against its consulate and had announced that it "did not want to escalate further".

"We are against escalating. Netanyahu wants to draw attention away from Gaza and focus on his confrontation with Iran," Mr Safadi added.

Germany's foreign minister will travel to Israel today for discussions on how to prevent an escalation of tensions in the region following Iran's attack over the weekend.

"It is incredibly important for us as the German federal government in these fragile times that we all work together to contribute to de-escalation for the entire region," Annalena Baerbock said at a news conference in Berlin with her Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi.

At least 33,843 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's military offensive since 7 October, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says.

Another 76,575 people have been wounded, the ministry added.

The updated figures come after 46 Palestinians were killed and 110 injured in the past 24 hours, it said.

The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and fighters in its reports, but says most of those killed are women and children.

Israel's war cabinet will meet today to discuss its response to the Iranian attack, an Israeli officials has told Reuters.

No time has yet been set for the meeting, they said.

It will be the third time that the decision-making cabinet convenes since Saturday.

Foreign minister Israel Katz said earlier there will be a military response and a "diplomatic offensive".

The latter refers Israel's calls for allies to proscribe the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organisation and to impose sanctions.

France, Germany, the UK, Russia, the US and the UN have called for military restraint.

The US could issue fresh sanctions against Iran in response to its attack on Israel, according to Axios.

Treasury secretary Janet Yellen will say the US will "not hesitate to work with our allies to use our sanctions authority", Axios reported, citing a copy of her remarks.

"The attack by Iran and its proxies underscores the importance of the treasury's work to use our economic tools to counter Iran's malign activity," she will say.

Israel has been lobbying its allies to issue sanctions since Saturday's attack, in particular those that would target Iran's missile capabilities.

EasyJet has suspended its flights to Tel Aviv for the entire summer.

It plans to resume travel to the Israeli city on 27 October.

It is the latest of more than a dozen airlines that has cancelled or rerouted flights in the region in recent days.

Others included Lufthansa, KLM, United Airlines, Air India, Austrian Airlines and Emirates Airlines - although Lufthansa announced it would resume flights today.

Israel is still imposing "unlawful" restrictions on humanitarian relief for Gaza, the UN Human Rights Office has said.

Its military was continuing to destroy civilian infrastructure, said spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani.

"Israel continues to impose unlawful restrictions on the entry and distribution of humanitarian assistance, and to carry out widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure," she said at a news briefing in Geneva.

The amount of aid now entering Gaza is disputed, with Israel and Washington saying aid flows have risen in recent days but UN agencies saying it is still far below bare minimum levels required to meet basic needs.
