2022 Season Review: Breaking Down the UCI Team Rankings

Season Breakdown: The 2022 road season is in the bag and so Spencer Martin has taken a close look at the team performances. What does the UCI Team point rankings tell about which outfits over, and under, achieved during the 2022 season?

With the recent running of Il Lombardia marking the end of the 2022 WorldTour racing calendar, I’ve been taking some time to reflect on the trends we saw emerge in the past season and plan out the BTP off-season content. To kick off this reflection and re-examination, I wanted to step back and take stock of how each team stacked up in terms of the UCI point rankings.

Below are the top 23 teams (18 1st division + 4 PT) in order of the UCI points they gained from their top 10 point-scoring riders throughout the 2022 season (aka the UCI point rankings).

As we can see, Jumbo-Visma takes the top spot in the UCI rankings for the second time in three seasons, with former powerhouse, Quick-Step, falling all the way down to 6th place. And perhaps even more surprising, Jumbo-Visma also ranks as the top team in wins (tied with UAE), while Quick-Step fails to win the season-long ‘win title’ for the first time in over ten years.

And below we can see how my pre-season BTP NET projection model stacked up against the post-season UCI Team Point Rankings.

I will dive into team performance in further detail when I do my weighted BTP NET Rankings for the coming season, but below are a few quick takeaways from these initial results.

Initial Takeaways:

1) Jumbo-Visma is officially cycling’s new superteam

• After a multi-year turnaround project, the Dutch team is now home to some of the sport’s best riders (Wout van Aert, Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard) and will exit the 2022 season with a Tour de France overall title along with the most UCI points and wins.
• This is one of the most difficult achievements in the sport since the single-minded focus on winning an overall title at the grand tour usually means a team can’t compile enough wins and UCI points to lead the WorldTour.
• They will now head into the 2023 season as the undisputed best team in the sport and will have massive expectations on their shoulders at nearly every race where they take the start line.

2) Quick-Step fails to take the ‘win title’ for the first time since 2012

• Up until 2022, the Belgian team eschewed stage race results in order to rack up wins in one-day races and individual stages.
• While 2022 was disappointing in the respect that the team failed to take the win title for the first time since 2012 and produced their worst results in the cobbled classics since the founding of the team in 2003, it was a massive success in they won their first-ever grand tour (Vuelta a España) and unearthed the sport’s next big grand tour star in Remco Evenepoel.
• Assuming the team can hang onto Evenepoel beyond 2022 (he is being pursued by bigger-budgeted teams like Ineos), it will be interesting to see how the team sets its financial and sporting priorities going forward.
• Interestingly, while their 4th place finish in the UCI Points rankings is technically disappointing, it is the first time their pre-season BTP NET rankings have roughly aligned with their actual finish, which reflects that their past results have been more a result of the team’s structure producing an overachieving squad than pure talent.

3) UAE failed to defend its Tour de France, and struggled to look like a cohesive team at times, but produced their best season ever

• Tadej Pogačar’s UAE team failed to win the Tour de France for the first time since 2020, but their 2021 off-season spending spree appeared to pay off as they tied for first in the win title and were the only team within 2,000 points of Jumbo-Visma in the UCI points race.
• This shows us that while they appeared to struggle to select the right Tour de France lineup to support Pogačar and to race as a cohesive unit in the races where their superstar wasn’t present, they will head into the off-season viewing 2022 as a successful campaign and that they could potentially emerge as the sport’s most dominant team in future years if they can find the right racing formula to unlock the immense amount of individual talent on the team.

4) The French teams had a surprisingly strong year

• After years of struggling to maintain pace with their competition in the world of hyper-advanced training, French teams produced a strong 2022, landing five teams in the top 20 and staving off relegation, which allowed them to keep four teams in the 18-team WorldTour.

5) Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert punched well above its weight

• If Alpecin was the underfunded overachiever of the 2021 season, Intermarché, who finished second-to-last in the 2021 WorldTour rankings, is the darling of 2022.
• With an extremely thoughtful team-building and in-race strategy, the underdog Belgian team was able to turn an 18th-place finish in 2021 into a shockingly high 5th-place finish in 2022.
• Most impressive is the gap between their BTP NET projection of 15th and 5th place finish, which shows that they really maximized the talent in their team.

6) DSM, EF, and Astana are in desperate need of a turnaround in 2023

• While Intermarché was flying high, three better-funded WorldTour rivals (DSM, EF, and Astana) suffered through absolutely awful seasons where points, wins, podiums and top tens were extremely hard to come by.
• While Astana and DSM struggled mainly due to weak rosters, EF’s extremely large delta between their BTP NET projected finish (8th), and their actual finish (18th), shows that their problems were more execution than talent related. I expect the American team’s off-season will include a significant amount of performance fact-finding to figure out how this could have happened.
• Putting just how poor the seasons of this trio were into perspective, while DSM only trailed AG2R by a single win, they finished over 2,000 UCI points behind the French team, which had a fairly disappointing season itself.

Tras el procedimiento de inscripción de los equipos profesionales de la UCI , la Unión Ciclista Internacional (UCI) hizo públicos los nombres de los equipos que están inscritos o tienen invitaciones para la temporada 2022. Seis nuevos conjuntos recibieron la licencia UCI Women’s WorldTour , incrementando hasta 14 el número de conjuntos en el máximo nivel. En cuanto a los equipos masculinos registró a  18 UCI WorldTeams y 17 UCI ProTeams para la temporada 2022.

La UCI rechzó la inscripción del ya extinto equipo Qhubeka-NextHash . Por ello, las dos primeras escuadras UCI ProTeam que figuran en la clasificación mundial UCI por equipos de 2021, Alpecin-Fenix y Arkéa-Samsic, están invitados a todas las pruebas UCI WorldTour de 2022 . Los 18 equipos WorldTour que tendrá el ciclismo en 2022

Dichos equipos tienen participación asegurada en las grandes carreras de la temporada..

El equipo sudafricano Qhubeka , que atravesaba dificultades financieras, desapareció del pelotón del WorldTour 2022 que vuelve a tener 18 formaciones, su formato original.

El registro de Qhubeka ha sido rechazado por la UCI que publicó este jueves la lista de equipos admitidos tras estudiar diferentes criterios (ético, financiero, administrativo, organizativo).

Los 18 equipos de primera división están clasificadas de oficio para el conjunto de las pruebas del calendario WorldTour , es decir, las grandes carreras de la temporada.

Qhubeka , creado en 2008, participó en seis ocasiones en el Tour de Francia, en el que ganó siete etapas, cuatro de ellas por el británico Mark Cavendish. El grupo sudafricano estaba presente en el máximo nivel mundial desde 2016 y contaba este año con 27 corredores en su plantilla.

Mientras el italiano Fabio Aru ha decidido retirarse, su compatriota Giacomo Nizzolo ha fichado por el equipo Israel SN y el belga Victor Campenaerts se ha unido al Lotto .

Conoce las Bicicletas que estarán utilizando los equipos WorldTour y ProTeam en esta temporada 2022 que esta a punto de iniciar.

A diferencia de la temporada pasada donde se produjeron varios cambios en los fabricantes de bicicletas en los equipos, la temporada 2022 no ha sido tan convulsa.

El único equipo que cambia de proveedor de bicicletas es BikeExchange-Jayco, cuyo contrato de un año con Bianchi llegó a su fin, dejando la puerta abierta para que Giant regresara al WorldTour.

Giant se vio obligado a abandonar la máxima categoría del deporte por primera vez desde finales de los 90, cuando el equipo CCC no pudo continuar su aventura para la temporada 2021.

Los 18 maillots de los equipos UCI World Tour 2022

Os mostramos los maillots que lucirán los corredores de los equipos UCI World Tour 2022, desde mañana en las principales carreras del calendario ciclista.

El UAE Tour de los Emiratos Árabes da el pistoletazo de salida mañana, 20 de febrero, al calendario UCI World Tour 2022 . La serie de carreras más destacadas y prestigiosas del ciclismo profesional. En total, en la categoría World Tour están los 18 mejores equipos profesionales del mundo, junto a 33 pruebas repartidas por cuatro continentes, de febrero al mes de octubre.

Cada uno de los equipos ha actualizado, en mayor o menor medida, su equipación identificativa para esta temporada. Maillots y culottes de alta calidad que convivirán también con los de campeones mundiales, europeos y nacionales. Estos son los nuevos maillots de los equipos World Tour 2022.

Maillots World Tour 2022: los nuevos diseños

El equipo francés, de 29 corredores y donde militan, entre otros, Greg Van Avermaet o Benoît Cosnefroy, mantiene el diseño del pasado año, que ya sorprendió con sus grandes y llamativos logos, sobre fondo blanco.

Está fabricado por la marca italiana Rosti , protege de un índice de radiación uV 70, la carrera de la cremallera es invisible y se puede abrir cómodamente con una mano y tiene un tope de seguridad para que no se baje. Incluye tres bolsillos grandes reforzados en la parte baja de la espalda. Se puede adquirir desde 84 euros.

El equipo Astana sigue identificándose con el azul claro característico de la bandera del país kazajo. No cambia mucho el diseño del maillot, pero sí la plantilla, con una gran renovación que incluye grandes nombres como Vincenzo Nibali, Miguel Ángel López, David de la Cruz o Joe Dombrowski.

La ropa está firmada por la marca italiana Giordana y del diseño cambia el logo central del patrocinador secundario, Qazaqstan por el antiguo Premier Tech.

En el maillot del equipo de Bahrein, confeccionado por Alé , gana protagonismo el rojo, desplazando el negro a los laterales y manteniendo los extremos de las mangas en azul.

Asimismo, siguen contando en sus filas con el maillot de campeón de Europa de ruta, Sonny Colbrelli , que también es vigente vencedor de la París-Roubaix y campeón de Italia.

Uno de los equipos que más se ha reforzado de cara a 2022. Pierde a Sagan , pero se ha reforzado muy bien con la llegada de ciclistas con mucha proyección como Aleksander Vlasov y el colombiano Sergio Higuita.

El maillot también experimenta una gran renovación. Mantiene los tonos verdes, pero la firma Le Col ha introducido motivos geométricos y un cuadrado rojo para identificarlo mejor en el pelotón. Eso sí, su precio es sólo apto para unos pocos, pudiéndose adquirir en la tienda online de Le Col por 190 €.

El equipo francés cambia por completo el diseño de su maillot , fabricado por Van Rysel . Aunque mantiene como colores identificativos el blanco y el rojo. Ahora ganan protagonismo en el frontal, con un diseño limpio de líneas rectas y formas geométricas que llama mucho la atención.

Un equipo que siempre sorprende con los diseños de su maillot y que suele modificar para las grandes citas del calendario, como el Giro o el Tour. Y para la nueva temporada 2022 la marca Rapha les ha ideado un maillot muy llamativo en el que mantiene el característico rosa con manchas negras con un toque muy psicodélico.

El conjunto galo apenas cambia el diseño de su maillot confeccionado por Alé , con una parte central blanco, con mangas y laterales en azul y rojo para representar la bandera de Francia. El equipo se ha reforzado este año con la entrada de buenos cazaetapas como Michael Storer o Quentin Pacher. Se puede comprar en la web oficial del equipo desde 118,90 €.

El superequipo británico estrena nuevo proveedor de ropa, Bioracer , cambiando las mangas del maillot, de azul, oscuro, por el rojo. No obstante, ese azul oscuro sigue dominando en el frontal y la parte posterior.

Además, el degradado entre el rojo y el azul se basa en motivos geométricos que se repiten. Un diseño que es tendencia en la mayoría de maillots del World Tour.

El conjunto belga, de 32 integrantes, cambia los tonos de sus colores característicos azul y amarillo, por unos más intensos y llamativos. Aunque en la parte central sigue presidiendo el blanco jalonado por los logos de los patrocinadores. Lo fabrica Nalini .

Como nuevos refuerzos del equipo está el velocista noruego Alexander Kristoff y el escalador italiano Domenico Pozzovivo.

Premier Tech se ha marchado de Astana y ha recalado como segundo sponsor del equipo Israel, donde militan Chris Froome o Jakob Fuglsang. El diseño del maillot de este año introduce el logo de este nuevo sponsor y añade nuevas formas geométricas al azul de la parte inferior. Se puede adquirir en versión réplica en la tienda oficial del fabricante, Jinga , por 70,38 €.

El diseño general del equipo holandés no cambia con respecto a 2021. Pero sí se añade la 'e' de la marca de bicicletas Cervélo a la altura del hombro para hacerla más visible. Está confeccionado por Agu , con poliéster y lycra transpirable y de rápido secado del sudor y añade un bolsillo lateral con cremallera. Su precio es de 70 euros.

Todo al rojo en el maillot del equipo belga creado por Vermarc . Elimina la franja negra de los hombros, dejando una blanca en el pecho con el nombre del patrocinador. En cuanto a su confección, está hecho de tejidos antibacterianos y fibras de carbono, que aíslan la piel de los rayos del sol y de la conductividad eléctrica. Su cremallera es integral y queda oculta una vez se cierra el maillot. Se puede adquirir por 123,15 € en la web de Vermarc.

El único equipo español del World Tour cambia el azul corporativo de Movistar por un tono más oscuro , con la M de la marca pintada ahora de azul celeste. El maillot está diseñado por La Passione , con un patrón aerodinámico y ergonómico, en cuello y mangas.

Además, la cremallera es inversa y completa, con tirador Cam Lock. Tiene tres bolsillos traseros de fácil acceso y uno extra más pequeño en el lateral , diseñado específicamente para llevar geles o barritas. Su precio es de 152 € y se puede comprar directamente desde la web de La Passione .

Uno de los bloques más potentes del pelotón, que alberga en su plantilla al actual campeón del mundo y maillot arcoíris Julian Alaphilippe. En 2022 regresa a la estética de la equipación de temporadas pasadas , pasando de un diseño completo en azul a volver al blanco en las mangas y azul.

El maillot está firmado por Castelli , con un patrón ceñido pero cómodo, tres bolsillos traseros y mangas ajustadas hasta casi el codo. Se puede adquirir desde 84,95 €.

Cambio completo de la equipación del equipo australiano BikeExchange-Jayco, optando por el zul claro y el blanco como colores principales. Está diseñada por la marca Alé , aplicando la tecnología Body Mapping. Gracias a ella, cada tejido se posiciona estratégicamente, siguiendo la anatomía del cuerpo, como una segunda piel.

Apenas pesa 100 gramos e incluye tres bolsillos posteriores de fácil acceso. Puede adquirirse por un precio de 139,95 €.

Apenas hay cambios en la equipación del conjunto holandés, que sigue fiel al negro con bandas verticales azules. La equipación tiene patrón aerodinámico, con corte ajustado que minimiza el roce con el viento. Los laterales, por su parte, tienen microperforaciones para garantizar la ventilación adecuada.

Las mangas tienen compresión gradual , tiene cremallera integral YKK y tres bolsillos traseros. Su precio es de 99,95 €, pero en la tienda online oficial del equipo se puede encontrar rebajado por sólo 39,95 €.

La plantilla de 31 corredores del equipo Trek-Segafredo vestirán este año un maillot blanco y rojo, evolucionando desde el negro-blanco-rojo de anteriores temporadas. Alude a los colores corporativos de Trek y está fabricado por Santini .

La prenda no tiene dobladillo, para incrementar su aerodinámica, y está tejida con materiales reciclados en PET. Ya puede adquirirse por 119 €.

Por último, el potente equipo del actual ganador del Tour, Tadej Pogacar, se mantiene fiel al diseño blanco, negro y rojo de la anterior campaña. También a su fabricante, la marca española Gobik . El maillot tiene corte ultrafit y tejido texturizado en las mangas y en la parte superior de la espalda. Posee también terminaciones de silicona en las mangas y un conjunto de bolsillos proyectados para que se pueda ver bien el dorsal en carrera. Se puede comprar desde 72 € en la tienda online de Gobik.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead
