Touring flagler’s legacy in st. augustine.

You don’t have to be an aspiring college student to tour what The Princeton Review calls “one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States.”

Daily public tours of Flagler College in St. Augustine highlight the architectural heritage of the erstwhile Hotel Ponce de Leon, a former luxury tourist attraction now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and part of the school’s campus.

Built by millionaire developer Henry Flagler in 1888, the luxury hotel is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture and houses the largest collection of in-use Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows.

Guests begin their tour by exploring the courtyard while learning of the hotel's Spanish Renaissance architecture and of the techniques and innovations used to construct Henry Flagler's vision.

Next is the grand lobby where you can stare up into an 80-foot domed ceiling supported by eight ornate oak caryatids hand carved with robed women, each slightly different from the next.

The tour continues into the dining room where 79 Louis Comfort Tiffany Stained Glass windows stream light onto hand-painted murals on the walls and ceiling.

Visitors also spend time in the Flagler Room, formally the Women's Grand Parlor, decorated with hand-crafted Austrian crystal chandeliers, a Thomas Edison clock containing the largest piece of intact white onyx in the western hemisphere, original hotel furniture and art, as well as personal photos and mementos from Henry Flagler and his family.

Located at 74 King St., tours depart from the Rotunda at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. They cost $10 for adults; $8 for seniors ages 60 and up and active military personnel; $1 for children ages 4-12, and free for children under 4 years.

Flagler College

st augustine flagler college

What better place to study Liberal Arts than inside an oasis of architectural beauty? Flagler College, situated on the grounds of the original Ponce de Leon Hotel, offers students 29 majors and four-year degrees in several dozen areas of study. Established in 1968, Flagler College is a private, liberal arts institution of higher education. The school has been ranked by US News and World Report as well as The Princeton Review as one of the best regional colleges in the southern United States. The college is named for industrialist and railroad magnate Henry Morrison Flagler who built it in 1888 as a hotel. It is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture and was one of the most exclusive resorts of its day.

Admissions

The centerpiece of the school’s 19-acre campus is the former Ponce de Leon Hotel, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The hotel was known for its opulent setting and luxurious amenities. Many millions of dollars have been spent renovating and restoring the historic buildings, and visitors as well as students spend many hours just enjoying the ambiance.

Today more than 2,000 students come to engage in educational pursuits ranging from the fine arts to accounting and business and many in between.

The Exquisite Ponce de Leon Hotel

Henry Flagler, co-founder of Standard Oil, envisioned St. Augustine as an American Riviera. In that spirit, he built the ornate Ponce de Leon Hotel on land that was once an orange grove. Capturing the essence of Old Europe, the Spanish Revival-style building adorned with Moorish Revival architectural elements was designed by John Carrere and Thomas Hastings. The construction began in 1885 and ended in 1887. The building was the first major structure in the country to have a poured concrete foundation. The hotel also had steam heat. The grandeur of the building would influence architecture in southern Florida for the next half-century.

fountain & exterior of building at flagler college in st augustine

An artists’ colony was established when Flagler erected studios at the rear of the hotel. The studios attracted prominent artists, including Martin Johnson Heade, Felix de Crano and Reynolds Beal. During the Depression, the federal government sponsored arts programs at the property that were attended by Robert Frost, Ernest Hemingway and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.

World War II Training Center and College

One of the few Flagler hotels to survive the Great Depression, the property was commandeered by the U.S. Coast Guard during the Second World War for use as a training center. The hotel and city are considered the birthplace of the Coast Guard Reserve. Several thousand recruits received their training here, including the celebrated African-American artist Jacob Lawrence. He would later serve on the USCGC Sea Cloud , the first integrated ship in naval service. The twin towers were originally storage tanks designed to supply the hotel with running water. One of the towers was converted and used as a brig by the Coast Guard. During the early Civil Rights Movement, the hotel dining room was the scene for a 1964 sit-in, the first major demonstration in St. Augustine. Four years later, the hotel would become the showpiece of the newly established Flagler College. The school would spend millions of dollars restoring the building to its original glory. The historic hotel, now a dormitory for female students, is open for public tours.

Travel Back in Time

Historic Tours of Flagler College highlight the architectural heritage of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, listed as a National Historic Landmark.

A tour of the college enables you to journey back to the Gilded Age and experience an opulent turn-of-the-century hotel. Reservations are not required, but you should arrive at least 20 minutes before one of the scheduled twice-daily tours, which are led by student guides. These tours highlight the architectural heritage of this designated national landmark.

Guests will begin their tour by exploring the courtyard while learning of the hotel’s Spanish Renaissance architecture and of the techniques and innovations used to construct Henry Flagler’s vision.   Next is the grand lobby and rotunda where they will look up into a 86-foot domed ceiling supported by eight oak caryatids hand carved with robed women, each slightly different from the next; these  figures are copies of those in the temple of Diana in Greece. The Rotunda features an intricate mosaic floor and walls adorned with elaborate paintings and murals by George Maynard.  Guests will move on to the dining room where the stained glass windows stream light onto the beautifully hand painted murals on the walls and ceilings.   Finally, they will visit the Flagler Room, formerly the Women’s Grand Parlor, where they will gaze upon hand crafted Austrian crystal chandeliers, a clock containing the largest piece of intact white onyx in the western hemisphere and crafted by Thomas Edison , original hotel furniture and art,  magnificent wall panels, detailed plaster carvings  as well as personal photos and mementos from Henry Flagler and his family.

The school also offers a special tour of the Solarium on Saturdays and Sundays during June and July. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the fourth-floor parlor over the Rotunda offer magnificent panoramic views of St. Augustine. Tickets for the tour can be purchased at Flagler’s Legacy Gifts on St. George Street or in the lobby gift shop. The admission fee is $10 for adults. The college offers discounts for children, senior citizens and military personnel.

Things to Know Before You Go

Boasting a history stretching back almost 500 years and warm, sunny weather, St. Augustine is a prime vacation destination. The most popular time to visit this pedestrian-friendly city is the end of February until the beginning of June which is also when the weather is most pleasant. While the summer can be sultry and often features brief afternoon thunderstorms, the temperatures during the fall and winter months can drop suddenly due to a cold snap. Be sure to dress in layers during the cooler months of the year, which is also the dry season. Weekends are usually more crowded than weekdays.

The streets of downtown St. Augustine are narrow and can be congested with cars. There is also limited parking. The best way to reach Flagler College is the Old Town Trolley. You can avoid the frustration of driving in congested city traffic and trying to find a place to park. On an Old Town Trolley Tour, you can sit back and relax as you hear a fun and informative story about the many points of interest that you will pass along the way. Step off the trolley and visit this historic landmark at your leisure. When you are ready, you can climb back aboard the next trolley. One comes along every few minutes. The Old Town Trolley is a safe, affordable and convenient way to see the best that St. Augustine has to offer.

Flagler College stands as one of the oldest private institutions nestled in the heart of downtown St. Augustine. The campus exudes beauty and charm, offering a picturesque setting that captivates visitors. During my visit, I was fortunate to capture stunning images of the college, showcasing its architectural and natural splendor. Moreover, Flagler College extends a warm invitation to tourists through organized tours. These tours provide a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history of the college while exploring the enchanting campus. Although, regrettably, we couldn't partake in the tours during our visit as they were temporarily closed, I highly recommend taking advantage of this experience. It offers a delightful blend of history and aesthetics, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty and historical significance of this esteemed institution.

Flagler College is an arcituctural gem and severl buildings from the campus are designations as "national histroic landmarks". The main campus buidling (Ponce de Leon Hall) was originally contracted as the Ponce de León Hotel when Henry Flagler bult his railroad so his freinds (and their freids) could excat the brutal NYC weather in sunny St. Augustine. Due to the timing of our visit, we did not get an opportunity to take a tour of the college but we did enjoy walking the grounds and admiring the architectural. If you time pemits, I woud encourage you to take one of the numerous tours of the college. If your schedule, like mine, doesn't allow for a tour, be sure to at least walk around and enjoy thiis beautiful campus.

Such a beautiful campus and amazing staff Slayyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Photo of Alexandra S.

Prior to arriving in Saint Augustine, we heard that touring the campus of Flagler College was a good idea. We were eager to officially visit the campus especially after seeing aspects of the buildings from various vantage points around town. Henry Flagler (born in 1830) is the namesake of this college and of so much more in St. Augustine (as well as other parts of Florida). He was a "Gilded Age" industrialist, oil magnate (who partnered with John D. Rockefeller to found the Standard Oil Company), and a railroad pioneer. The college was founded in 1968 and comprises 19 acres. The centerpiece of the college is what was once the luxurious Ponce de León Hotel built in 1888. The hotel was purchased and became part of a larger vision to create a small, liberal arts college by a relative of Henry Flagler: Lawrence Lewis, Jr. Mr. Lewis was the driving force behind building Flagler College as a way to honor his ancestor's many successes in St. Augustine. We learned that today Flagler College is ranked 8th among regional colleges in the South. Louis Comfort Tiffany designed the interior of the Ponce de Leon Hotel including the many stained glass windows contained therein. They are stunners!! There is a lot of very beautiful artwork including lovely outdoor sculptures. There are murals by George Willoughby Maynard (1843-1923) and Virgilio Tojetti (1851-1901). The buildings that comprise the college are done in the Spanish Renaissance style of architecture and are gorgeous. When you think of St. Augustine, this style of architecture is what comes to mind given the town's Spanish history. The Flagler College students (and those living in St. Augustine) are extremely fortunate to be surrounded each day by so much beauty. The town itself is so lovely but the college is one of the jewels in the crown. You can readily tour Flagler College on your own but you will have limited access to some of the buildings' interiors. It's probably best to sign up for one of the official campus tours. It is well worth one's time! We spent a lovely afternoon here and I would certainly return.

What a beautiful place!!!!! I wish I had been lucky enough to attend college here when I was young. We only walked in and saw the lobby and were just amazed at the detail to the woodwork. Had we been here longer, I would have loved a tour as it looks so beautiful.

When Henry Flagler developed his famous railroad that connected the East to the then-populous Key West, he needed his luxury travelers to have rest points along their journey. Therefore, he decided to develop two luxury hotels in one of the few developed cities in Florida at that time: the centuries-old Saint Augustine. The fist one, the Ponce de León Hotel, was a jewel of the Gilded Age dedicated to the Spanish heritage of the town, and of their famous Conquistadores. In 1968,the building became Flagler College, and the original splendor of the decorations was restored (the college is currently undergoing additional restorations)

From a tour perspective, this place is absolutely gorgeous and I would do anything if I was able to have my major be one of the few here so I could've attended university! The tour is a nice length with the guides being some of the very students it is teaching. They know so much about the college and the amount of small details you wouldn't think about looking for, they knew. Everyone gathers in the main building, under a gorgeous some of magnificent design. The guide explained why there were multiple angels and what each one stood for. We got to go into a closed off room, only for tours, and learned about a clock that has been broken and never fixed because if they tried, they would need to rip out the entire wall and they can't because the wall is one of the last original pieces left here and it would damage the clock beyond repair! The hub is absolutely gorgeous and the amount of stained glass they have around the university is gorgeous. The school offers a little gift shop and when you are done with the tour, you are free to explore all the grounds of the university. I will for sure be stopping here again to take another tour next time I am in town!

God Bless Henry Flagler. This is one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever strolled around or been in. Walking in what was the main entrance to the lobby sent shivers of joy up my spine. What was the main lobby is so gorgeous.

Beautiful school and a solid education. They are responsive and care for the kids. The community and college are happy to have the kids on campus.

It was beautiful seeing the campus. It has so many architectural details and even real gold used in construction. Once a resort for elites, you can see how extravagant the place was. There's so much to look at, it's stunning they built it so long ago

The 10 Best Things To See In St. Augustine, FL

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

We recently got another chance to visit St. Augustine, one of the oldest cities in the US. I’ve been fascinated with this Florida city for a long time because it has so much history and was home to some of the central figures in the development of Florida. So, today, I want to talk about some of the best things to see in St. Augustine, FL!

St. Augustine is old, really old, and is a place where lots of historical “firsts” happened. It’s a city full of interesting landmarks, beautiful beaches, good food, and sunny weather.

The St. Augustine area merges old-world American history, Spanish charm, and modern amenities to create a fantastic vacation destination for the entire family. The heart of the city is very walkable. You can visit almost all the major attractions by taking a hop-on, hop-off trolley that stops at the popular locations.

In this post, I’ll cover the best things to see in St. Augustine, FL, and give you some tips on how to make the most of your visit!

The Best Things To See In St. Augustine, FL

Visiting  St. Augustine  is always a lot of fun for our family. You know that walkability is very important to us when we travel. Therefore, it’s no surprise that St. Augustine’s walkability and tourist-friendly layout add much to our experience.

The town is relatively compact, with most major attractions located downtown or nearby. St. George Street is a pedestrian-only street that runs through the old city center. It’s packed with shops, restaurants, and fun attractions.

St. Augustine can get very busy, especially during holidays and weekends, when the city swells with visitors. The streets will get filled with people, and the pace of activity is fast, especially around St. George Street. When you travel, bring good shoes, water, sunscreen, and an adventurous spirit!

The Old Town Trolley Tour in St. Augustine

Before diving into my list, I want to quickly discuss the  Old Town Trolley Tour . Throughout the post, I will mention that there is a trolley tour stop near various places. Therefore, it is an excellent activity for first-time visitors who want to get a feel for the area! The trolley tour stops at or passes by many of the best things to see in St. Augustine, FL.

The Old Town Trolley Tour is a  hop-on, hop-off trolley  that stops frequently at critical locations throughout the city. It comes around often and drops riders off at 21 different stops. You can get on and off an unlimited number of times all day long.

Purchasing an  Old Town Trolley Tours ticket  also gives you some discounts on local attractions. We used the trolley and enjoyed it. It gave us flexibility and the ability to cover more ground.

In the heat of the summer Florida sun, it’s also a welcome reprieve from walking. The trolleys are not air-conditioned, but they are open-sided. Most stops will probably be busy with people waiting during peak travel times. You may need to wait for the next train. I want to manage expectations and ensure you give yourself plenty of time. However, on our visit, we waited 5-15 minutes, at most, at any stop before boarding.

My best trip would be to take the trolley first thing in the morning. Likewise, you can always buy a two-day ticket !

List Of The Best Things To See In St. Augustine, FL

So, let’s get started and look at some of the best things to see in St. Augustine, FL!

There are a lot of  things to do in St. Augustine . St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the contiguous US. Many attractions tell the story of the original Spanish people who founded the city in 1565.

This list includes some of the most popular things to see in St. Augustine. I’ve focused on locations that are noteworthy as historical landmarks rather than on purely tourist-oriented attractions. If you are using the Old Town Trolley, be sure to research ahead of time to plan where you will get on and off the trolley. Batching your sightseeing by trolley stop will make things easier and quicker and prevent back-tracking later.

#1 Castillo de San Marcos National Monument

The  Castillo de San Marcos  is the oldest masonry fort in the continental US. This massive fort looks out over the city’s bay. It is fascinating to explore and provides a fun way to engage with the area’s history.

Tickets are required to enter the fort. The interior is filled with intriguing nooks and crannies where you can learn more about a soldier’s life in the fort. The rooftop has many types of cannons and a fantastic view of the harbor.

We recommend setting aside 2-3 hours to visit Castillo de San Marcos, and in my opinion, this tops the list of the best things to see in St. Augustine, FL.

#2 St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum

The  St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum  is a historic lighthouse built in 1874. Climb the 219 steps to reach the observation deck, which offers an amazing view of the surrounding area. The museum also has a children’s play area and a puppet theatre.

The new Maritime Center offers many hands-on and interactive displays regarding maritime culture, navigation, and transportation. Children must be at least 44 inches tall to climb the stairs, and tickets are required.

#3 Lightner Museum

The  Lightner Museum  was once known as the Hotel Alcazar, a palatial hotel commissioned by Standard Oil executive Henry Flagler. Flagler was instrumental in the development of Florida in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Flagler Florida East Coast Railway allowed for the development of the Florida Keys, and his grand vision brought prominent visitors from all over the US to experience Florida. At the Lightner Museum, you can tour the iconic building and see the museum’s collection of art and historical pieces. The museum offers an immersive experience of art, architecture, history, and design. Tickets are required.

If this Florida railroad history interests you, you may want to pick up one of my favorite books titled  Sunshine Paradise: The History of Florida Tourism

#4 Flagler College

Flagler College is a private liberal arts college in St. Augustine. The school itself was founded in 1968.

Flagler College’s centerpiece building is the Ponce de Leon Hotel, which was built in 1888 by Henry Flagler. The hotel is a gorgeous example of Spanish Renaissance Revival architecture and was one of the first buildings in the world wired for electricity. Flager’s friend, Thomas Edison, provided the power with his new DC generator.

Henry Flagler established an art colony at the hotel and built an artist’s studio building to the rear of the hotel. The Ponce de Leon Hotel is home to the most extensive collection of Luis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows.  Visitors are frequently in awe of the incredible dining room!

Paid  historic tours  of the campus and buildings are available.

#5 Gonzolaz-Alvarez House (The Oldest House)

The  Gonzolaz-Alvarez House  is the oldest surviving Spanish colonial house in St. Augustine. Construction began around 1723, and the house was in its final form by 1790. Evidence of St. Augustine’s diverse history of occupation by Spanish, British, and American forces can be seen at the house.

The Oldest House Museum Complex offers guided tours, a museum, a colonial kitchen, an ornamental garden, and a museum store. Tickets are required. Guided tours are available every half hour. The St. Augustine Surf Culture and History Museum is located in the same complex, and admission is included with the Oldest House Museum admission.

#6 Fountain of Youth Archeological Park

The Fountain of Youth Archeological Park is a fun museum and park for the whole family. It plays off the famous legend of the “Fountain of Youth” – a spring of waters that would grant drinkers immortality.

When Ponce de Leon arrived in 1513, he found a local native tribe called the Timucua. He and his men traded with the Indians before relationships became hostile. The Fountain of Youth Archeological Park showcases the fascinating lives and culture of the Timucua people. You can see the Timucua Indian exhibit, a great interactive learning experience, a planetarium with a show about maritime navigation, and explore the park.

The park is 15 acres with venerable oak trees, an observation platform over marshes, native peacocks, and other birds.  Tickets  are required.

#7 St. George Street

St. George Street  is the bustling main street that runs through the center of old St. Augustine. In the early days, it was the city’s main street, and today, it is the center of tourist attractions, shops, restaurants, and bars.

This area includes a vibrant, busy, pedestrian-only street lined with attractions of every kind. It’s fun to walk down the street and see all the cute shops, galleries, and restaurants. I recommend coming here for lunch or dinner, as there are many great places to eat.

The City Gate, Oldest House, and Cathedral Basilica are located along St. George Street. Be sure to satisfy your sweet tooth at Whetstone Chocolates, a local confectionary in business since 1967!

#8 Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is the oldest Catholic church in the city, and the Parish of St. Augustine is the oldest Catholic parish in the country. The first Catholic mass in the continental United States took place here.

The Cathedral’s Spanish Mission architectural style is beautiful, and the interior is adorned with exquisite murals, stained glass windows, sculptures, and artifacts. The Cathedral is open to the public, and guided tours are available.

#9 National Shrine Of Our Lady Of La Leche at Mission Nombre De Dios

The Shrine Of Our Lady Of La Leche was built in 1609 in honor of Our Lady of La Leche – a Marian apparition popular with early settlers. It’s considered the oldest shrine in the US. The complex consists of The Chapel of Our Lady of La Leche, the Great Cross (a really tall cross), the Rustic Alter, and a beautiful Rosary garden.

President John F. Kennedy once called it the “Most sacred acre in America.” Admission to the National Shrine Of Our Lady Of La Leche at Mission Nombre De Dios is free, and self-guided tours are available.

#10 Gates of St. Augustine

The Gates of St. Augustine are located at the very north end of St. George Street. It’s a historic landmark built by St. Augustine residents in 1808 and used as a gate to defend the city. The gate is made of coquina, a locally abundant limestone sedimentary rock comprised almost entirely of sand-sized fossil debris.

The gates are an excellent place to take pictures and memorialize your visit to  St. Augustine ! They also signify the start of St. George Street and entry into the historic district.

Then tour consists of access to the side of the dining room. Period. You can visit the courtyard and lobby for free and read all the details yourself. No access to the building, nor rooms, nor parapets. Beautiful building, TOO BAD THE TOUR DOESNT SHOW YOU ANY OF IT!

The architecture of Flagler College was truly astonishing. It is really incredibly beautiful and I could have spent the day just staring at the courtyard. We had a very nice student-led tour with a energetic and well-informed young woman. However, it was a very brief tour. Granted the tickets were fairly priced and we were warned that part of the tour was under construction. However considering how lovely the building is I would encourage Flagler to expand the tour. We saw only the the entrance rotunda and the student lunchroom. I realize it is a working college but access to the upper floors, water towers and a former hotel room would have been great.

The best $14 I spent! The Flagler College Legacy Tour is really a great way to learn the history behind St. Augustine becoming what it is today. The student tour guide was very knowledgeable about the architecture, the design and history of this beautiful place. Well worth the trip. Parking is tricky so plan accordingly.

We toured Flagler College this afternoon. The tour was great largely because of Mia a guide. Although only a freshman, she was great!!!

My girlfriend and I took the tour today and absolutely loved it. Cheyanne, a student at the college, was our tour guide and was awesome. I’m a Florida native, and never knew the history. I loved hearing Cheyanne tell us about it, and loved seeing all the beautiful Tiffany chandeliers and stained glass.

Students give the tour, although short it was greatly informed. Cheyenne did a great job of sharing architecture and student life as well. We went for the Tiffany windows and learned alot more
