My husband and I did a tour with Susan, and had a fantastic time. This food tour is great for visitors, but learning about responsible practices and how our island can sustain itself is vital for Oahu's future.

If you're really into food and want to find the hidden gems, Tasting Oahu is the place to go. We made 6 stops and all were great- baked goods, juice, saimin, Japanese American fusion, poke, appetizers, and deserts.

Worth doing for sure! We learned so much about the food and history of the island and went away feeling like this was one of the best things we did on Oahu. The food was so delicious we will go back for more!

This was a lovely afternoon and the food was excellent. Our final stop at the Farmer's Market was very crowded, but the visit with Judy the pastry chef made it worthwhile.

It was really cool to meet the owners of the food stops and learn about their history and the place. The food itself was really good at each place. Also, it's fun to try these unexpectedly good spots.

Planted by La Tour Café opens its first plant-based, sustainable café in Oahu

H ONOLULU (KHON2) — After a successful pop-up in Aina Haina, extension of local restaurant La Tour Café is planting its roots in the Ward Village with first official location in Oahu.

Planted by La Tour Café is calling ‘A‘ali‘i Shops home and is now open for all plant-loving, sustainable foodies.

“Planted by La Tour Café takes a more sustainable approach to dining while still delivering the sophistication diners expect,” said Taylor Herring, General Manager of Ward Village. “Ward Village offers many unique retail and dining experiences for residents and visitors to enjoy, and environmentally friendly and health-conscious guests will love this latest, plant-based addition to the neighborhood.” ​

The café’s Ward Village location will include an array of pastries and snacks like  their Planted Smash burger, falafel banh mi and earthy mushroom dip and more.

They also offer a rotating selection of limited-time flavors and special menus throughout the year.

“Planted is about embracing a culinary challenge and captivating the taste buds of our customers,” said Christopher Gee, Corporate Chef, Planted by La Tour Café. “We want to show that plant-based cuisine is just as rich, delicious and satisfying as traditional options.”

Japanese Prime Minister's N.C. visit will feature bluegrass, barbecue and factory tours

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will visit North Carolina following his state visit with President Joe Biden at the White House this week. 

Japanese companies have made big investments in North Carolina recently, including the new Toyota battery factory in Randolph County and the HondaJet factory at that company's headquarters in Greensboro. Kishida plans to tour both factories during his visit to North Carolina, according to the governor's office.

"Award-winning Raleigh Chef Ashley Christensen will prepare a menu that highlights North Carolina’s culinary tradition with contributions from Japanese fare," the governor's office said. 

“I am excited for the opportunity to cook for this group of outstanding leaders and to share some of North Carolina’s incredible bounty of ingredients, from land and sea, with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida,” Christensen said in the release from the governor's office.

Sam Jones BBQ, which does eastern North Carolin-style whole hog barbecue, is preparing the Thursday lunch for other members of the Japanese delegation and Japanese media accompanying the prime minister on his trip.

“We are honored to be a part of this visit and most excited to share a tradition and foodway that is rooted in eastern North Carolina,” said Sam Jones BBQ's Mitchell Letchworth. “Whole hog BBQ is a North Carolina standard and Sam Jones BBQ is proud to have our food served at such a momentous event.” 

Bluegrass band Unspoken Tradition will play a set in the garden outside the Executive Mansion during the lunch. 

While the prime minister tours the factories in Randolph and Guilford counties Friday morning, his wife Yuko Kishida will meet with Japanese exchange students and Japanese language students at a high school in Chapel Hill and visit Duke Gardens in Durham. 

The prime minister and his wife will also meet with students at North Carolina State University in Raleigh Friday afternoon.
