What Is a Singles Cruise? 10 Things to Know

what is a singles cruise

A singles cruise is a great opportunity to travel and meet like-minded friends.

Going on a cruise is one of the best vacations you can take, and there are all different types. What is a singles cruise, and why are they so popular?

Most cruisers are very sociable and love making new friends. Cruises for singles adds the possibility of romance to the equation. Here at CruiseExperts.com, we know all about singles cruises. Call us at 1.888.804.CRUISE (2784) and let us find the best singles cruise for you.

10 Things to Know About Singles Cruises

Singles cruises are organized events that are planned and hosted by a cruise ship line or a travel agency and geared toward groups of unmarried single adults wishing to make new friends or meet a romantic interest.

Here are some things you should know about singles cruises:

1. Each singles cruise is unique and each cruise line will offer different packages for cabins, dining, and beverages according to what the travel agency has requested.

2. There may be a pre-cruise event providing an opportunity to meet other guests prior to the cruise.

3. Although some lines are starting to add lower-cost single rooms, it generally costs more to have your own room, so ask about partnering up with someone of the same sex for a lower fare.

4. Singles cruises have special events and activities which can include welcome mixers, special dinners, social gatherings, cocktail parties, dance lessons, game nights, guided excursions, and more.

5. Your cruise may also include the regular amenities that come with your fare rate in addition to events exclusive to the singles cruise.

6. There is often a separate dining area and an exclusive place for socializing that is away from the rest of the cruise guests.

7. Singles cruise guests can also enjoy the pools, outside activities, and other amenities their cruise ship has to offer.

8. Spa, hot tubs, exercise room, and more are available at an additional charge if not included in your cruise package.

9. Travel agencies set up singles cruises and book a block of rooms on specific sailings. All of the passengers are not part of your singles cruise.

Great singles cruises to book and meet fascinating people

Melinda Crow

Start humming the theme song to "The Love Boat" because we're going to do a deep dive into how to find the perfect singles cruises to book if you want to meet people.

Is it possible to meet your forever match on a cruise ship? Absolutely.

An editor I once knew found her true love on an expedition-style cruise. They married within months of returning home and now have two children. Whether it was the thrill of the expedition, the forced digital detox of a remote destination or the close quarters of a small ship, their relationship clearly blossomed on board.

Cruise ships offer a unique way to meet new and often fascinating people, whether you're looking for romance or simply want to enjoy the company of other people vacationing the same way you do.

There are single cruisers on almost every ship. Some sail solo; others are in friend or family groups. Dining arrangements, onboard activities and port tours make meeting like-minded people easy. Also, it's socially acceptable to strike up conversations with others throughout the ship.

Some cruise lines make it even easier for singles to find each other with solo cabins clustered together and scheduled events for singles.

If you'd like to find companionship at sea, here are our top tips for making the most of a singles cruise.

Tips for making the most of a singles cruise

singles cruise meaning

As on dry land, activities are often the best way to meet people on a cruise. If you love to dance, go where the music is. If water sports are your thing, book a tropical cruise with a schedule of shore excursions that involve snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving and similar activities. Choose tours focused on wildlife watching, historical sites or food and beverage to meet shipmates who enjoy the same.

You'll often find other singles within shore excursion tour groups . However, you can increase your odds by joining social media groups specific to your cruise dates where you can connect pre-cruise with anyone cruising single.

In fact, there are dozens of social media groups dedicated to singles who love to cruise. Some groups focus on specific cruise lines, while others are broader in scope. Either way, they provide an easy opportunity to start a conversation with other singles before you ever set foot on the ship.

Your vessel's daily activity schedule is also a good place to find other singles. Check on the cruise line's app , on the interactive TV in your cabin or in the printed version (if there is one) for planned gatherings of singles, which are often pre-dinner meetups at bars.

A theme cruise is another way to meet people with similar interests. Sailings focus on country music, popular TV shows, wine tasting, crafting and other hobbies and interests. Not only will you likely find plenty of singles ready to mingle, but it might also be easier to strike up a conversation, knowing you have at least one thing in common.

Chartered singles cruises take the work out of finding other singles because you'll travel together in a group, often with a host to organize everyone. On larger ships, the charter will connect you with other group members through planned onboard meals, gatherings and activities. On smaller vessels, the tour company might charter the entire ship, so every passenger is single.

One word of caution here: It's easy to think that meeting someone on a cruise ship takes all the inherent danger out of hanging out with strangers. You're in a confined space surrounded by lots of other people. Sounds safe, right?

While cruising is, overall, incredibly safe, crime on board can happen. Like any form of travel, it's best not to let your guard down, especially if you go off alone with someone you've just met.

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when seeking other singles on cruise ships is to start with an appropriate cruise line for your age and lifestyle . Here are some great singles cruises for various age groups to help you get started.

Best cruises for singles over 20

singles cruise meaning

For young singles, cruising can sometimes feel like an expensive way to meet people. To avoid the high cost of single supplements charged to solo travelers in standard cabins meant for at least two people, single cruisers can travel with friends and share a room. (Many cabins can sleep up to four.) Also, you might feel more confident heading to the ship's bars or nightclubs in a group.

Try short three- to five-night cruises on low-cost mainstream lines like Carnival , Norwegian Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean , where you'll find more young adults and more of a party scene . Singles on a budget can also save money cruising on older, smaller ships across the mainstream fleets, which typically have lower cruise fares.

Margaritaville at Sea is another good choice for quick and affordable two-night trips to the Bahamas, though you'll need to find love quickly on such a short cruise.

Twentysomethings who have a larger travel budget and wish to cruise on their own can look for cruise lines with solo cabins. These rooms for one are in limited supply, so they can be priced at a premium and sell out quickly.

Related: The 6 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Our top pick for this age group would be a short Carnival cruise from almost any U.S. departure port.

The price is right, there's plenty of onboard fun designed for this age group (great live bands, nightly karaoke, poolside games, trivia and deck parties). It's also a good way to get your feet wet when it comes to cruising as a young single. Carnival ships have many cabins that can sleep several of your besties if you choose not to go alone.

Best cruises for singles over 30

singles cruise meaning

Cruising singles in their 30s have slightly different vacation needs from their younger peers. Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Carnival are all still great choices for this age group, whether you're traveling on your own or with a group of friends.

Another cruise line that works well for young singles is Virgin Voyages , which is child-free and has rooms and activities designed for singles. Its cheeky, nontraditional vibe is a plus for thirtysomethings.

Use the tattoo you got at the onboard tattoo studio as a conversation starter, make friends at an '80s-themed workout class, or chat up your neighbor at an after-hours cabaret or at a communal table in one of the line's many complimentary restaurants.

Single parents who vacation with their youngsters might want to add Disney Cruise Line to the list. The kids can enjoy amazing supervised programming in the expansive kids club while mom or dad enjoys adult pleasures like wine tastings, fine dining and dancing — all of which could lead to meetups with other single parents on board.

A warm-climate Royal Caribbean cruise with your best buds can be an ideal option for the over-30 set. We recommend one of the line's newest and biggest ships so you have plenty of options for food, entertainment and hangouts to try. From slides and water attractions that get your heart racing to dance clubs open until the wee hours of the night, these ships have plenty to offer young singles and plenty of places to meet new friends.

Best cruises for singles over 40

singles cruise meaning

Singles in their 40s generally are ready for a little less party and a little more romance on a singles cruise. This age group won't be out of place among festive singles on board Virgin Voyages or Carnival, but Celebrity Cruises is another cruise line to consider.

The line's newer Edge Class ships have a younger, hipper ambience than their older ships. Think martini bars, foodie havens and jazz clubs, all with decor that looks nothing like your parents' cruise ships.

Related: Best cruise ship bars

For those who like to gamble, try the mainstream cruise lines. The large casinos offer yet another opportunity to meet other singles on board — particularly at the table games. Margaritaville at Sea is another line to consider with plenty of gambling singles on board.

For fortysomething singles looking for onboard romance, we suggest a studio cabin for seven nights on NCL's new Norwegian Viva bound for the Caribbean . There's plenty to do on board and in port to help you meet people.

Additionally, the solo cabins, which have been redone in a more elegant style than on some of the line's older ships, provide access to the Studio Lounge for socializing. The lounge has also been revamped, giving it an upscale feel with free daily snacks and drinks. (Note that Norwegian's cabins for one sell out quickly, so you'll want to book early.)

Another great pick would be Virgin Voyages' four-night Fire and Sunset Soiree sailings from Miami on Scarlet Lady . They include stops at Key West and a private beach club on Bimini , plus a sea day to get to know your fellow passengers. The cost for a single "sailor," as Virgin calls them, starts at around $700.

Best cruises for singles over 50

singles cruise meaning

For senior singles cruises, all the previous options are still reasonable choices. However, some lines cater a bit more to this age group. The caveat is that cruise lines that cater to mature travelers are often targeted at couples, with solo travelers skewing older.

Oceania , Azamara and Holland America are tops on this list, especially on their shorter cruises that attract still-working professionals. The ships are large enough to have a mix of singles among the usual crowd of couples but small enough to provide a strong chance of actually meeting those other singles on board.

These lines offer port-intensive itineraries, so book ship tours to connect with like-minded folks on board since you likely won't spend as much time lounging around the pool.

For singles over 50, a Celebrity Cruises itinerary in the Mediterranean will likely include many other singles with whom you can mingle. Mediterranean cruises are popular with active mid-lifers looking to see more of the world. What could be more romantic than cruising the Greek Isles or the Italian coastline?

Best cruises for singles over 60

singles cruise meaning

Single retirees with the freedom to enjoy longer and often more expensive cruises have loads of options for meeting people. The list starts with premium lines like Holland America, Oceania and Cunard , but also Viking and Princess Cruises .

Single travelers in their 60s and older with a large travel budget should consider luxury cruise lines like Seabourn Cruise Line , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises . All of these cater to singles with reduced supplement charges and singles meet-and-greets.

Visit the maitre d' on the first day of your cruise to ensure you are seated at the same table or group of tables with other singles for dinner in the main dining room. Dance classes, trivia games and port tours also put you in the right place at the right time to strike up conversations with others looking to make new connections. Social hostesses on luxury lines can introduce you to other solo travelers, too.

Related: Why it's easier to meet new people on a smaller cruise ship

River cruises in Europe are another possibility for singles in this age group. River cruises are inherently social, in part because of the small size of the ships, but also because daily tours put people with shared interests in proximity during walking and bus excursions. There are also choices of specialty theme cruises for LGBTQ+ cruisers , wine lovers, golfers and ancestry seekers, all of which make it easier for singles to meet people on board.

Lines to consider include AmaWaterways , Viking River Cruises, Avalon River Cruises, Emerald Cruises and Uniworld River Cruises. River cruises also sometimes offer reduced single supplements, making them more affordable for those traveling alone.

A top pick for this age group would be an Alaska sailing on Silversea Cruises. This luxury line includes everything in one fare — even many fabulous Alaska excursions you would pay hundreds of dollars for on any other line. The ships are small enough that you can easily meet your fellow travelers, and the excursions make it easy to share experiences with other singles on board.

Bottom line

The romance of a cruise is undeniable. From dressy dinners to the moon's glow on the ocean waves, cruising can feel like a setting straight from a Hollywood film. Though not as simple as swiping right, cruising to meet other singles has appeal.

Choosing the right cruise line and activities can help you narrow your potential candidates. Looking for an outdoor adventurer? Choose active tours in port. Want to share your love of music, wine or Blackjack with someone? Pick a theme cruise focused on your passion.

If you just want to dance the night away with singles in your own age group, there's a ship for you — whether your jam is rock 'n' roll, hip hop or a classic waltz.

Also, you lose nothing by trying. Even if you don't meet the partner of your dreams, you'll enjoy a fantastic cruise vacation.

2. Research price options : Researching different cruise lines and their single supplement policies is essential for solo cruisers. Some cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Holland America offer single cabins or reduced single supplement fees, making it more affordable for solo travelers.

3. Understand room configurations: Familiarize yourself with the different cabin categories and their configurations. Some cruise lines have dedicated solo cabins or studios, while others offer double-occupancy cabins for single travelers. Knowing the options available will help you choose the accommodation that suits your needs and budget.

4. Research onboard options: Look into the amenities and activities onboard. Many cruise lines have a wide range of activities specifically for solo travelers, such as singles meet-ups and solo traveler excursions. This will ensure you have plenty of options to socialize and meet fellow passengers.

5. Join roll call groups on Cruise Critic: Cruise Critic is a popular online community for cruise enthusiasts. Joining roll call groups for your specific cruise allows you to connect with fellow solo cruisers before the trip. This can help you find a travel companion or get to know other travelers who will be on board.

Solo cruisers can ensure a well-planned and enjoyable vacation by following these pre-cruise preparation tips. Whether you want to relax or socialize, solo cruising offers a unique and enriching experience.

Last updated: April 26th, 2023

Woman on a cruise

  • Find a Cruise

A solo cruise is an excellent vacation choice if you’re looking to experience exciting destinations around the world and make new friends along the way.

Sometimes you don’t want to wait to see a destination until you have a travel partner who can go with you. Maybe you just like the introspective time that a solo vacation can provide.

Traveling alone doesn’t mean you have to rough it, backpack, or do all the planning yourself.

If you’re considering taking a cruise vacation by yourself, here are some solo cruise tips to help make your journey an unforgettable experience.

Choose a Cruise Line That’s Solo-Friendly

Woman aboard Celebrity Cruises

Not all cruise lines are the same. If you’re planning your much-deserved vacation and you want to travel solo, pick a line that welcomes single travelers.

Celebrity Cruises has beautiful single staterooms, many with a private veranda, and offers hosted social events for solo travelers.

You’ll find a vast range of excursions on offer, many of which are the perfect bonding opportunity for anybody looking to make new friends, and a safe, inclusive environment on board.

Martini Bar

The spas and fitness facilities on board are second to none. There’s dazzling entertainment on every ship, whether you want to take a front row seat at the Martini Bar and watch the mixologists at work, or take in one of our state-of-the-art shows.

Celebrity is also one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cruise lines in the business, too.

All this adds up to Celebrity Cruises being the perfect choice for solo travelers, something that has been recognized by the travel industry. Celebrity was the proud winner of the 2022 Solo Traveler Magellan Award, presented by leading travel industry publication Travel Weekly.

With every new ship, Celebrity has added more staterooms to its fleet that are solo-traveler friendly – and many of them have a private veranda, too. Don’t miss out on a trip of a lifetime because you don’t have a travel partner who can go with you.

Celebrity Beyond has 32 solo staterooms with an Infinite Veranda, as does the new Celebrity Ascent. Celebrity Apex features 24, while Celebrity Edge is home to 16 solo staterooms. Celebrity Silhouette will also have 4 inside single staterooms perfect for solo guests.

These single staterooms start at 131 square feet, giving you plenty of space to move around. Not only are single staterooms spacious, but they’re also outfitted with the same modern, sleek design and luxurious amenities as all staterooms on Celebrity’s ships.

On Edge-series ships, the larger single stateroom with infinite veranda is perfect for solo cruise guests, a generous 184 square feet including the veranda space.

The infinite veranda isn’t like a normal cruise ship balcony. With the push of a button, the doors to your veranda seamlessly open and fold into the sides of the room, bringing the outdoors in, making it perfect for those who love to soak up the sun and the views from their own private space.

What Are The Best Cruises For Solo Travelers?

View of the Sky Lounge

The best cruises for solo travelers depend on the experiences you most want out of a vacation.

Are you a thrill-seeker looking to cross items off your bucket list? Want to see the capital cities of Europe without hotel-hopping and planning all your own accommodations and train travel? Are you more interested in hiking or history?

Celebrity has crafted different itineraries for travelers of all kinds, from introverts who prefer fewer social activities to extroverts who thrive on meeting new people.

Man snorkeling in St Croix

Craving time in the sun against the backdrop of white sand beaches and crystalline waters? Consider a 7- or 10-night Caribbean cruise , where snorkeling and diving shore excursions are bound to introduce you to people with similar interests and a sense of adventure.

If you’re a history buff, tour thousand-year-old churches in Italy or see the ancient ruins of Greece up close.

People on an excursion in the Galapagos Islands

Galapagos Islands

Or choose the Galapagos Islands, where you’ll share life-affirming adventures with fellow travelers every day, gathering together in the evenings to swap stories.

There is no shortage of options for cruisers who are traveling solo.

What About Solo Cruises For Seniors?

On a cruise, seniors can enjoy a worry-free vacation featuring world-class accommodations and a travel experience tailored to their interests.

Celebrity’s cruises have onboard activities to suit everyone, from thrilling entertainment and live music to guest speaker series and guided meditations.

On solo cruises for seniors , accessible staterooms and excursions for all types of mobility levels ensure guests see as much of the world as they desire.

Tips For Making New Friends During Your Solo Cruise

People hanging out at Craft Social

Craft Social

Just because you’re cruising solo doesn’t mean you have to be alone, unless you want to be, of course. Here are a few ways to make friends—and memories—onboard.

Get to Know the Crew During Your Solo Cruise

One of the best things about sailing with Celebrity is the friendly, engaging crew from all around the world. Many guests enjoy talking with them and learning about the area of the globe they’re from.

Bartender crafting drinks

World Class Bar

Finding a bartender you get along with so you can have your own “local” bar on the ship is an easy way to feel comfortable in a lounge while cruising solo.

Get to know your cruise director, who you’ll often see walking around the ship. If they know you’re a solo cruise passenger, they may give you some insider tips on upcoming activities or entertainment you won’t want to miss.

Join New, Dedicated Events for Solo Travelers

View of Eden aboard Celebrity Cruises

Meet fellow solos in a friendly environment at Celebrity Cruises’ new Solo Travelers’ Gathering and Dinner, hosted by the Activity Team.

Check the time in your Celebrity App or Celebrity Today daily program and head for the Sky Lounge (on Millennium and Solstice-series ships) or luscious Eden on Edge-series ships, where you can meet fellow solo travelers. The friendly Activity Team will help break the ice.

People on an excursion in the Galapagos Islands

The Shore Excursions team will be present to facilitate bookings should you meet a potential buddy to join you for excursions.

There will also be a special solos’ table at dinner that night, and an unhosted solos’ table every night thereafter for anybody who is enjoying the company of new friends for dinner. This is the perfect opportunity to get together with other people traveling solo.

Get Out & Mingle

You might be tempted to unwind in your stateroom after busy days ashore. However, spending time in public spaces on the ship is a great way to meet new people.

People hanging out at night on a cruise

Celebrity Edge

Strike up a conversation and make some new friends on the very first night of the cruise. Perch at the bar for drinks if you feel awkward sitting alone at a table. Get chatting on shore excursions, and join group activities on board.

Celebrity’s ships are equipped with high-speed WiFi so it’s easy and convenient to start a WhatsApp group to arrange activities and meet-ups with newfound friends.

People playing casino

Say Yes to Dining With New People

Joining people for dinner is a great way to make friends and have a fun meal at the Main Restaurant or in a specialty restaurant.

People laughing while eating

People will likely be intrigued by you traveling on your own, want to get to know you better, and enhance their own dining experience. Even couples like to socialize and meet new people on vacation. Since you’re all travelers who enjoy seeing the world, it’s easy to swap travel stories.

The solos’ table is also always an option. Sitting here is a great way to meet other adventurous solo travelers and swap stories.

Opt for an Assigned Seating Time for Dinner

As a solo cruise traveler, you may benefit more from doing a traditional assigned seating time instead of dining at different times.

With an assigned seating time, you’ll be sat at the same table each night with other cruise passengers and the same crew waiting on you. It will give you some familiarity as your tablemates, server, and sommelier get to know you and your dining preferences—and sparkling personality!

Woman raising glass for a toast

If you don’t feel totally compatible with the other folks at your table, talk to the maître d’ and ask for a different table.

If you’re seated at a table on your own and feel self-conscious, have a book or journal on hand. A journal is a lovely way to pass the time at dinner, giving you the opportunity to reflect on the day and write about all the amazing things you saw in port or did on the ship.

Book Shore Excursions Through the Cruise Line

People on a train in Alaska

Celebrity’s shore excursions highlight the best parts of a destination and provide unforgettable experiences. Bond with fellow passengers by exploring the port together. You’ll have the chance to run into them again on the ship for more fun and conversation.

When you book a shore excursion, you know you’ll be spending your day surrounded by other travelers on your ship. Most ports have multiple ships calling at them each day, so it’s better to spend the day making new friends with people who will board your ship at the end of the day.

Woman preparing for a zipline

Choose an excursion that features a hands-on activity. This gets people out of their element and provides easy conversation starters.

Chatting with others while hiking through a rainforest or waiting on a zip-lining platform can lead to fun conversations. Choosing a tour like a wine tasting or a cooking class is a great way to break the ice with fellow passengers.

Bus tour in San Francisco, California

San Francisco, California

If you go on a sightseeing shore excursion on a bus, try to sit up near the front so you’re close to the guide. They’ll usually be open to conversations and are a wealth of knowledge on the destination you’re visiting.

You can ask questions and also learn about what it’s like to live there. It’s a way to have some socialization throughout your solo cruise day in port while also learning more about the city or town you’re visiting.

People walking to the boat for an excursion

The best part? All the details are taken care of for you. You’ll be conveniently guided right to your shore excursion transportation from the ship. You’re guaranteed to be back to the ship in time before it leaves for the next port.

Take Classes Onboard

Sommelier discussing wine to guests

Cellar Masters

Join in beverage and culinary programs on board and mingle with like-minded passengers who, like you, appreciate a glass of fine wine or an expertly prepared meal. Onboard classes and seminars give you the chance to see cooking demonstrations, learn about the art of wine tasting, and more. You can even create your own wine blend onboard.

If wine isn’t your thing, you can learn the art of bartending in a Mixology 101 class. Sample a martini flight at the Martini Bar. Into whisky? Try the Macallan Flight Experience, which lets you taste a trio of whiskies. Or join one of the gaming classes in the casino; once you’re confident to try your luck at the tables, it’s easy to strike up a conversation.

Yoga class aboard Celebrity Cruises

If you like to work out, the classes at the Fitness Center are a great way to meet like-minded travelers. Workout classes on cruise ships tend to attract a core of enthusiasts, after the initial well-intentioned rush during the first day of the cruise, and you could find yourself making plans to meet new friends every day for yoga, or F45.

Solo Cruises: Ultimate Guide to Sailing Alone

Picture of Doug Parker

Doug Parker

  • September 12, 2020

The appeal of  solo cruises  lies in two camps: cruise heaven or downright terrifying.

I assume you want to know everything about  solo cruises  and cruising single? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

solo cruises travel

Statistics  released over the past few  years by the Cruise Lines International Association show that people traveling alone are an ever-increasing demographic.

Over the past decade, cruise lines have recognized the  solo traveler  market and now feature a variety of staterooms designed for single travelers without the need for a travel companion.

Cruise ships  now offer more  solo cabins  than ever, with NCL retrofitting its vessels to make all classes of  solo cabins  available, including veranda staterooms.

Why Take a Solo Cruise?

Choosing a  solo cruise  offers unmatched opportunities for those seeking freedom and adventure without compromise. It caters to the desires of  solo travelers  to explore at their own pace and meet like-minded individuals along the way.

Freedom and Flexibility

Freedom is the cornerstone of a  solo cruise  experience. The  solo traveler  enjoys complete autonomy in planning his or her day without synchronizing with others’ schedules. From choosing excursions to deciding on meal times, the flexibility available to  solo cruisers  means that one can follow their whims as they arise.

Meeting New People

Embarking on a solo cruise can be an ideal way to socialize and connect with fellow travelers. Solo cruisers are often able to meet new people, and many cruise lines offer activities and events specifically designed for singles. This creates a friendly environment where new friendships can be formed.

Personal Growth and Independence

Cruising solo fosters  personal growth and independence . It encourages solo travelers to leave their comfort zones and engage in new experiences, increasing self-reliance. The voyage becomes not just a journey across the sea, but also an exploration of one’s capabilities and strengths.

Planning a Solo Cruise

When planning a solo cruise, one must consider the variety of cruise lines available, choose the most suitable stateroom, and understand the financial aspects, such as the single supplement fee. Selecting the perfect cruise can be straightforward with the proper research and knowledge.

Length of the Cruise Matters

Retirees with passive income have the resources and time to indulge in extended sailings of 10 days or longer to exotic locales on high-end cruise ships. Do you know who (usually) does not? Single people in their 20s-50s.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but it’s a numbers game out here.  If you want to ensure that your sailing will be loaded with lovely lurkers, select a trip of 8 days or less on a non-pretentious cruise line that can be booked for a reasonable price.

READ MORE:  9 Best Cruise Lines For Singles

If you want to avoid being overrun with families as kids take over the lido deck, choose a cruise that sails while kids are still in school. You won’t completely avoid married couples and pint-sized pirates altogether, but the numbers will be way more in your favor.

Another pro tip is to remember that two to four-day sailings will likely be your weekend warriors, often comprised of a heavier drinking and party crowd. Grab a cocktail and claim your place on the dance floor if that’s your thing.

On five to eight-day sailings, your fellow sailors are likely to be of a (slightly) more mature and reserved variety.

Researching Cruise Lines

Research is the first step in planning a  solo cruise . Cruise lines such as Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Holland America offer different experiences, amenities, and  solo traveler  programs. You are not limited to just mass-market sailings, even luxury cruise lines offer  solo rates  (which typically offer fewer people onboard).

Norwegian Cruise Line is renowned for their studio staterooms catering to solo cruisers, which removes the single supplement fee. Royal Caribbean also provides studio staterooms designed for solo travelers, ensuring value and comfort without the additional cost of single supplements.

Selecting the Right Stateroom

Choosing the right stateroom is crucial for a  solo cruiser’s  comfort and enjoyment. The options vary from interior rooms to balconies and suites.

Solo travelers might consider the following factors:

  • Location : Proximity to the ship’s amenities.
  • View : Whether one prefers an ocean view or not.
  • Size : Space and layout that meets personal comfort levels.

Some cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, offer staterooms specifically designed for solo passengers, providing an appropriately sized living space but also helping solo cruisers avoid the single supplement.

Understanding the Single Supplement

First, you should know that cruise line rates are based on double occupancy and cruise ship staterooms are designed for two people. The single supplement is a fee that cruise lines charge when a solo traveler occupies that cabin.

For instance, if you book a balcony stateroom for one person as a solo cruiser, you will be charged the rate for two people (while only paying the port taxes for one person).

Solo cruisers should look for promotions or specific sailings where the single supplement is reduced or waived.

A website that has been around for years, helping the solo cruiser, is  CruisePlum.com .

Holland America occasionally offers a reduced single supplement, making it advantageous for solo cruisers to monitor such deals. Always review the pricing structure of your chosen cruise line to ensure you receive the most cost-effective option for your solo adventure.

Onboard Experience for Solo Travelers

For individuals traveling alone, cruising provides a unique chance to indulge without judgment, connect with like-minded people, and participate in activities not limited by others.

Dining Options and Social Meals

Solo travelers  have various dining options, from high-end specialty restaurants to casual buffets.

Many cruise lines cater to singles by offering  social dining tables  where guests can meet and enjoy meals, facilitating connections and shared experiences. For instance, Silversea Cruises provides an elegant dining experience where solo guests can mingle and partake in gourmet meals in a group setting.

Solo Cabins and Lounges

Solo staterooms , explicitly designed for single travelers, are becoming a staple on many ships. These cabins are often smaller, more affordable, and purposefully located to grant easy access to the ship’s amenities.

For example, the  studio lounges  are exclusive social spaces where solo cruisers can relax, enjoy a drink, and meet other guests without a single supplement fee. Norwegian Bliss has a great solo studio lounge.

Onboard Activities and Entertainment

The variety of  onboard activities  ensures that there’s something for every solo traveler. They can indulge in spa treatments, attend fitness classes, or partake in enrichment lectures. In the evening, the ship comes alive with many  entertainment options , including Broadway-style shows, live music, and themed parties, which are excellent for solo travelers to enjoy and socialize.

Cruises for Solo Travelers

Several cruise lines offer solo cruise rates if you plan to go on a cruise alone. These lines include Virgin Voyages (Scarlet Lady) and Celebrity Cruises (Edge class ships like Celebrity Beyond).

Additionally, some river cruises in the US and Europe offer reduced cruise fares for solo travelers.

(Note: Check each cabin category with the cruise ship you want to sail or turn the hard work over to a travel agent.)

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Studios

Norwegian Cruise Line pioneered in accommodating solo travelers with their innovative  Studios . Specifically designed for those cruising alone, Studios eliminates the need for a single supplement and offers a private space for guests to chill and meet other solo travelers.

Royal Caribbean’s Single Staterooms

Royal Caribbean  caters to individuals exploring the seas independently with a range of  single staterooms  onboard select ships. These accommodations include interior and balcony options, providing a comfortable retreat without worrying about additional fees for traveling alone.

Ships like  Harmony of the Seas  offer cozy hideaways starting at about 96 square feet, while options like studio balcony rooms treat guests to private outdoor spaces.

Cunard and Holland America

The tradition-rich  Cunard  offers solo travelers an elegant experience with several single cabins on its famed ocean liners.  Holland America Line  similarly accommodates solo guests with a mix of stateroom options, providing a peaceful stay amidst a wealth of onboard activities.

Both cruise lines have developed a reputation for a refined cruise experience and feature programs and amenities that make solo travel inviting and enjoyable.

Making the Most of Shore Excursions

Solo travelers can enhance their cruise experience by strategically selecting shore excursions and networking with other solo cruisers. This way, they discover new destinations and connect with like-minded individuals.

Choosing Excursions for Solo Travelers

Solo cruisers should select shore excursions that cater to their interests and allow flexibility. They can benefit from joining small group tours, which typically provide a more personalized experience, making interacting with fellow participants and guides easier.

For instance, a guided historical tour can offer a deep dive into the destination’s culture and history. Solo travelers might also consider activity-based excursions – like snorkeling or a cooking class – as they often encourage camaraderie among participants.

Networking with Fellow Solo Cruisers

Shore excursions are an excellent opportunity for solo cruisers to meet and engage with others. Onboard mixers and group activities are designed to help solo travelers connect before disembarking. Solo cruisers can take advantage of these pre-shore excursion gatherings to find other solo travelers with similar interests.

Engaging with fellow solo cruisers in this way can form groups for shared shore excursions, which enhances the personal experience and offers savings compared to going alone.

Overcoming the Solo Travel Challenges

Embarking on a solo cruise adventure can be as exhilarating as it is daunting, with single supplement fees and the quest for camaraderie being among the primary concerns. This section offers concrete strategies for solo cruisers to tackle these challenges.

Dealing with Single Supplement Fees

Solo travelers often face the challenge of the  single supplement fee , an additional charge levied on individuals occupying a cabin designed for two. To mitigate this cost, travelers can:

  • Seek Out Special Offers:  Some cruise lines provide promotions that reduce or waive the single supplement fee, making cruising more affordable for solo passengers.
  • Choose Cruise Lines That Cater to Solos:  Opt for cruise lines offering  solo cabins  specifically designed for one person and priced accordingly, such as those available on Royal Caribbean ships.

Finding Your Community Onboard

Building a community onboard is crucial for solo cruisers and can greatly enhance the cruise experience.

Here are ways to connect with other solo passengers:

  • Join Organized Activities:  Participate in activities designed to bring passengers together. Meet-and-greets, group excursions, and themed events are ideal for connecting with fellow cruisers.
  • Utilize Social Dining Options:  Request to be seated at communal tables in the main dining room, which is an effective way to meet other single cruisers.

Special Programs for Singles

Cruise lines increasingly cater to single travelers through special programs focusing on social interaction and enjoyment. These offerings provide a welcoming environment for those cruising solo to meet like-minded passengers and participate in curated activities.

Hosted Social Events

Many cruise lines organize  hosted social events  specifically for single travelers. For example, some cruises feature cocktail receptions that allow singles to mingle in a relaxed setting.

They can attend singles mixers or theme nights to break the ice and foster community. Royal Caribbean offers events where solo cruisers can meet with the cruise director and crew members, enhancing their onboard experience.

Singles Cruises and Theme Cruises

Singles cruises  are specially tailored voyages that cater to individuals traveling alone. These cruises often have dedicated  social spaces  where singles can come together and socialize.  Theme cruises  take this concept further by revolving around a specific interest or activity, making it easier for solo travelers to find others with similar interests.

For instance, a cruise line might offer a dance-themed cruise where singles can learn new skills while connecting with fellow dance enthusiasts.

Themed Sailings or Full Ship Charters

Theme cruises are another great option for single cruisers.  I admit that I was already a well-seasoned cruiser before I found out how many theme cruise options were available.

Unlike a partial charter or the “cruise within a cruise” format, a theme cruise is typically a third-party organization chartering the entire ship for a set amount of days and destinations.

The host organization charters the ship, books the entertainment, schedules the activities, and markets the sailing to the appropriate demographic.

Could you imagine being a superfan of country music, classical rock, or electronic dance music and boarding a ship of 3,000 like-minded enthusiasts for a dream vacation?

There are wall-to-wall performances by some of your favorite acts, with the price of each show already built into your cruise fare.

Combine that with some of the most exotic destinations on the planet, and you have a single cruiser’s paradise.   Themes for these getaways can range from music and comedy to cryptocurrency and comic books.

There are countless organizers of these vacations, but check out sixthman.net for a one-stop shop on more than a dozen “ festivals at sea .”

Tips for Solo Cruising

Cruising solo offers an enriching experience for those who seek an independent adventure. Here are some tips to ensure they enjoy their vacation to the fullest:

  • Choosing the Right Cruise Line : Some cruise lines cater specifically to solo travelers, offering single cabins and reduced single supplements. Ensure they pick a cruise that aligns with their preferences.
  • Connecting with Others : Solo cruisers should take advantage of the activities and social events designed for single passengers. This can be a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded travelers.
  • Planning the Budget : Solo cruisers should check if their cruise package includes solo-friendly amenities and services to avoid unexpected expenses. Understanding all costs involved is critical to planning a stress-free trip.
  • Safety First : They should familiarize themselves with the ship’s layout and safety protocols. It’s also advisable to keep a copy of their passport and important documents separate from the originals.
  • Packing Smart : A solo traveler must pack items that cater to their comfort and entertainment. This may include books, a journal, or any tech gadgets that they prefer.
  • Staying Connected : While some prefer to unplug, others may purchase WiFi to keep in touch with loved ones or manage work commitments during their sea days.
  • Be a heavy presence in social media groups:  Nowadays, almost every sailing has a dedicated roll call on the Cruise Critic message boards and Shipmate cruise app, or a Facebook group. These are invaluable ways to connect with fellow cruise guests before you sail.
  • Step out of your comfort zone on day one:  Singles and solo cruisers will typically look to make connections on the first day to set the tone for the rest of the journey. Grab a drink and jump right into the mix so you aren’t trying to wiggle your way into already-established social circles later in the cruise.
  • A little liquid courage is okay , but don’t overdo it or other single cruisers will be bonding over the kick they are all getting out of the overtly inebriated sailor.

By preparing in advance and embracing the freedom of solo travel, cruisers will surely have an unforgettable vacation while cruising single.

Solo Cruising 101

If you’re thinking about going solo on your next cruise, you’re not alone. here’s more about the trend and what you need to know.

a woman on a cruise ship looking out at the water

Terry Ward,

Five percent of people who cruise aboard Cruise Lines International Association ’s (CLIA) more than 50-member cruise line brands are opting to go solo — a number that has roughly doubled compared to a decade ago, the organization found. “This increase in demand has driven cruise lines to create more opportunities for solo cruise by retrofitting existing cabins to include solo cabins, providing ‘solo-only’ areas and more,” says Sally Andrews, vice president of strategic communications and public affairs for CLIA. “Some cruise lines have reported that as many as 20 percent of their passengers are traveling solo.”

Julie Sayer, an independent cruise and vacation consultant in Tampa, Florida, says solo cruising was a trend before the pandemic, but it has really taken off after COVID . “Just because [travelers] don’t have a significant other or travel companion, they still want to see the world and go.”

If that sounds like you, there’s likely a solo cabin out there with your name on it.

Cruise lines offering solo cabins and solo activities

From ocean liners to small ships, solo cabins are becoming increasingly available. This is important because passengers avoid paying single supplement surcharges or full price on double-occupancy-based cabins.

“ Solo travel has been on the rise for several years, which is why since 2016 with the introduction of our Pinnacle Class ships, we’ve offered dedicated single staterooms for our guests,” says Michael Smith, senior vice president, guest experience and product development, at Holland America Line.

Norwegian Cruise Line was the first to introduce studio stateroom accommodations designed for solo travelers (with no single supplement fee required) in 2010. The line now offers studio staterooms on nine of its 19 ships, including the new Norwegian Viva , which debuted in August 2023.

In addition to Holland America and Norwegian Cruise Lines, cruise lines known for ample single staterooms include Celebrity ( Celebrity Beyond has 32 single staterooms, all with verandas), Royal Caribbean Cruises, MSC Cruises, Costa Cruises and P&O Cruises.

In response to the growing demand for solo options, Oceania Cruises recently debuted retrofitted solo staterooms on each vessel in its small-ship fleet. “Our guests and travel partners wanted more options for solo travelers and more diverse tour offerings, and we are delighted to deliver,” says Nikki F. Upshaw, senior vice president of global sales at Oceania. Oceania’s newest ship, Vista, offers six solo staterooms with oversized private verandas.

There are more solo cabins coming down the pipeline, too, including aboard Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess, which will have four solo cabins — a first for one of the line’s new builds — when it launches in 2024.

Most of the ships with solo staterooms also offer designated lounges, events and classes for passengers traveling alone. For example, aboard participating Oceania ships, guests receive a list of the scheduled solo gatherings at the start of the day. Holland America Line also schedules events such as trivia contests and exercise classes to encourage people to meet.

Tips for finding the best solo cruise for you

1. If you want to meet people on a cruise, consider booking one that’s going transatlantic. All the at-sea days and onboard events and activities are the perfect backdrop for lots of socializing along the way, says Anne Scully, a partner at EMBARK Beyond who has sold cruise vacations for more than 40 years. “Coming from England on the Queen Mary you gain an hour every night,” she says — all the more time to meet people along the way.

 2. “Attend everything,” Scully says. That could mean things like trivia events, game nights and lectures (the ones that interest you, of course) as well as white-gloved teatime and solo cocktail hours designed for cruisers on their own.

Holland America Line

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

3. Off-peak cruising times (which vary depending on the destination as well as the time of year and location) offer a better chance of getting a reduced single supplement on ships that don’t offer solo cabins, says Sayer, making those time frames a good window for traveling with other solo cruisers.

4. Consider testing the waters to see how you like traveling on your own as part of a shorter land-based tour before making the leap to a longer solo cruise.

5. Consider a themed cruise where you will be more likely to meet travelers — whether they’re cruising solo or not — with a common interest.

6. Sign up for smaller shore excursions that make it easier to meet and mingle with other travelers.

7. Make the crew aware you’re cruising solo. “Passengers sailing on their own are hosted at dinner by ship officers, staff or entertainers,” says Karen Thomas, senior director, brand and external communications for Seabourn.

8. Don’t shy away from solo meetups on board — it might feel awkward to put yourself out there as a solo traveler by going to onboard solo gatherings, but it’s the best way to meet people traveling the same way you are.

Single Travelers Guide to Planning a Solo Cruise.

There’s never been a better time to try something new. and doing so on your own terms..

A solo cruise isn't just a vacation; it's a chance for self-discovery and the creation of unforgettable memories on the open seas.

The idea of going on a cruise alone can be daunting — but solo travel is the way of the future. Luckily, US News & World Report named Virgin Voyages “among the best cruises for solo travelers ” in 2022.

Solo Travel is on the Rise

Solo cruises are the new norm in 2024, as people are increasingly willing to take on adventure themselves if their friends or family can’t be convinced to join. “There is a really wonderful circular relationship between self-esteem and traveling ,” licensed psychologist Dr. Chloe Carmichael Peet told NBC News. “Traveling in itself is an act of confidence. The fact that you went somewhere by yourself demonstrates strength.”

We’re inclined to agree — although between the bounty of onboard entertainment shows and events we curate and our carefully compiled list of Shore Things for when you dock, you won’t need to demonstrate too much strength on a voyage.

A study by MMGY found that one in four travelers plans to travel solo in the next six months. Will you be among them? Whether it’s with a classic, relaxing 4-night jaunt through the Caribbean or a sprawling 15-night getaway across the Mediterranean, you deserve some “you” time. See you on board for a solo cruise, Sailor!

Plan a Solo Cruise, Reconnect and Meet other Singles

Planning and going on a solo cruise can be a liberating and empowering experience, especially if it is your first cruise and you have no set expectations. Traveling on a cruise ship with like minded people who may also be traveling solo provides plenty of opportunity to meet new people. When traveling solo whether you’re over 30, 40, or 50, it’s your time to explore on your terms. You’ll be able to set your own schedule, or if you happen to meet someone on board you can schedule activities you’re both interested in through our Mobile App. We are an adult only cruise line that caters to solo travelers, with our cruise ships having a sociable atmosphere and plenty of social events. As a solo traveler, you may want relaxation, or adventure, or a bit of both, regardless if you are a solo traveler that likes quiet time, or to be in the mix of social fun you’ll find plenty of activities on board our cruise ships, and on shore excursions. Remember when planning your solo cruise to pack wisely. Consider what to wear on your cruise , although we don’t have a dress policy onboard our cruise ships, nor do we force you into a formal night, you still want to consider our cruise activities and dressing for shore excursions.

A Solo Cruise for Singles, and everyone in between

People of any relationship status can find fun aboard one of our voyages, and our exclusively adult philosophy creates an alluring onboard atmosphere that draws like-minded people to one another.

Our Crew has put a lot of thought into inclusive activities and spaces on board the ship, from a “grog walk” (Virginese for “pub crawl”) through our many bars to the shared table concept at Gunbae, our convivial, first-to-sea Korean BBQ restaurant — where diners mingle while seated around a table, all sharing the same grill.

“I came expecting to relax, eat some great food and have fun. What I didn’t expect was to meet such an amazing group of humans while traveling alone,” posted Braunwyn Windham-Burke of The Real Housewives of Orange County about her experience cruising single on Scarlet Lady. “I’m coming back different than I left, healing through joy, stronger and more aware of myself.”

Booking a Single Cabin for Solo Travelers

Our adult only cruise ships aren’t just retreats for the rich and reality TV-famous, though. The Insider and Sea View cabins are priced attractively for people traveling alone — and subscribers to the Virgin Voyages email list are often notified of promotions on double occupancy rooms with no single supplement, meaning you can spread out without the customary extra charge.

Take advantage of booking a single cabin on board a Virgin Voyage cruise ship, find a solo cruise deal and start saving. Our cruise cabins are super-yacht inspired cabins, built to optimize space and views . Perfect for solo travelers yearning for sophistication, relaxation, with VIP service! Enjoy comfort and privacy to your heart's desire in your own space, but if you ever feel need for a guest, our cabin beds are designed to be converted to give that living room vibe while making for a welcoming space of enjoyment.

Best Cruise Line for Singles and Solo Travelers

Our adults-only cruises make the perfect atmosphere for single cruisers to meet new friends. With plenty of onboard activities and entertainment, you won’t lack for excitement or things to do. From bar crawls to adult games, and cruise karaoke you’ll have plenty of laughs and fun. We also provide the Virgin Voyages mobile App, it’s no Facebook group, but gives you options to easily connect virtually with other sailors on board while providing options of sharing activities as well. Feel free to explore our App once you’ve booked your cruise, and no worries, we have free WiFi onboard so that you can stay connected with friends and family at home, so even when you’re traveling solo, you won’t be too far from loved ones. These and more make Virgin Voyages stand out as an excellent choice for solo/single travelers. If you’re truly craving for a solo cruise, pick Virgin Voyages for a memorable voyage on the high seas.

Single & Solo Travelers Q&A’s

Of course! People go on cruises alone all the time, in fact solo cruising is one of the most popular forms of vacation travel for those who love flexibility and freedom. In fact, our cruise ships have dedicated solo cruise cabins to accommodate single/solo travelers.

  • Singles Cruises – Expectation vs. Reality

Young single man walking along the beach on a shore excursion on singles cruise

When a lot of people think about regular cruises they will imagine an elderly couple who will enjoy strolling around a ship in their retirement. If people think about cruises for singles then they might also have a lot of misconceptions about what goes on and the types of activities that you are going to be doing.

Here we will look at some of the common expectations that can be placed around singles cruises and see whether or not the reality of the situation is going to live up to that. As with all kind of preconceived notions, there is often a little truth in them but also a lot of the time the real truth is going to be very different.

No matter if you are not sure if you want to make a singles cruise or which cruise line is the right one for you , we will help you to get an idea of it. In general a singles cruise is a great way to have a memorable trip but you are going to be able to take things at your own pace and do what you want to do. A singles cruise shouldn’t be anything scary but instead a break that you can be excited about.

  • Singles cruises are just one long party
  • Everyone is looking for that special someone on a singles cruise
  • I won’t find anything in common with other single cruisers
  • I’m too shy and I won’t like a singles cruise
  • I won’t meet other single travelers my age
  • You’re better on a regular cruise vacation
  • I’ll be forced to socialize with other solo travelers
  • A singles-only cruise is my sole option
  • Sharing a room with other solo cruisers will ruin my cruise
  • I’m only just divorced or widowed, singles cruising is not for me
  • My destination options are going to be limited on a singles cruise

Expectation: Singles cruises are just one long party

Reality: There is no doubt that you are going to be able to have a great time if you are looking for it. On a singles cruise there will be a great range of events that you are going to be able to enjoy and there will be plenty of opportunities to party.

That is only if you choose to have that type of singles holiday. For others they might love to go to some events but at other times they would prefer to relax and enjoy other activities that the ship is going to be able to offer.

The truth is that you are going to be able to have the type of vacation that you want and you are going to be able to be in control of your own destiny. There are many different cruise activities on the boat and it isn’t going to be one long party. The cruise will be whatever you make of it and if you want to party and go on surf simulators, you can and if you want to simply relax on a Caribbean cruise, you can.

Expectation: Everyone is looking for that special someone on a singles cruise

Reality: Some people will be put off from going on a singles cruise as you might think that it’s going to be a little bit too intense. It could be that you are not ready to commit to anything special yet and would be uneasy about going on a vacation with a lot of people who are.

Whether you are looking for fun, to flirt or to find someone special, you are going to be able to find people who are in the same situation as you. On a cruise you’ll find that people are the same as they are on land and there will be a wide range of different mentalities.

Some people will also go into a singles cruise thinking that no-one will want commitment and are just there to relax. Again, whatever your mentality you are going on your cruise with, you will find that a lot of people will be thinking like you are.

Start our FREE cruise price alerts to never miss a deal again.

Expectation: I won’t find anything in common with other single cruisers

Reality: Even if you are going to be on a large cruise ship, if you are going on a singles cruise adventure then you are only going to be with a finite amount of people and you might think that your opportunities to find like-minded people are going to be slim.

In reality, you are going to be on a cruise ship with others who decided to go on the same vacation, you already have a lot in common with everyone you’re going to be with on the ship. You will soon find that you have plenty of other things in common with your fellow passengers too.

That doesn’t mean, of course, that you are definitely going to fall in love and live happily ever after, but it does mean that you are going to be able to have a great time, meet great people and have a very enjoyable time while you are out there on the ship.

Expectation: I’m too shy and I won’t like a singles cruise

Reality:   It’s going to be a natural reaction to be nervous about boarding a ship where you are going to be in social situations with other singles. Everyone else is in the same situation and only the uber-confident are going to be completely comfortable in that situation.

With these types of vacations though, you will quickly get chatting with your fellow passengers and the whole cruise will be set-up to make it as easy as possible to you to meet and greet with other passengers who are going to be as anxious as you are.

If you are ever slightly overawed by the social situations, then you will be able to take your way out of any events and relax instead. Very soon after being onboard the ship, your mind will be put at rest and any shyness is going to be a thing on the past.

Expectation: I won’t meet other single travelers my age

Reality: Singles cruises are going to be available for a vast range of different age groups , not only is there going to be plenty of people around your age range on any given cruise line but there are also age-specific single person cruises that are available for people who want more certainty about their fellow passengers.

On standard single cruises you will find that the majority of passengers are going to be in the 30-50 range but there will also be plenty of people above that with some of them below that too. There will be a lot of people who are going to be around your age, whatever that might be.

This is not something that you are going to have to worry about as you are going to meet plenty of people. If you are 60+ then there may be more limited opportunities to meet fellow passengers but you will still have plenty of people to speak to and have a lot of fun.

Expectation: You’re better on a regular cruise vacation

Reality: You might not think that a singles cruise is going to be the best choice for you and instead would rather go on a regular cruise and enjoy the onboard activities as a solo traveler. If you’re looking to find new people, then this probably isn’t going to be the best idea.

Regular cruises are essentially set-up for couples and this will apply to the dining experience, the activities and the entertainment. Without anything single-specific, you might find that it is a lonely cruise vacation, unless you are looking for seclusion.

The chances of meeting someone on a regular cruise are going to be slim if they have nothing set-up for singles. There is also the factor that you are likely to pay a lot more for the experience too with port charges and also the single supplement.

Expectation: I’ll be forced to socialize with other solo travelers

Reality: A singles cruise is going to be planned with a lot of activities to be able to enjoy yourself and be able to have fun while you are onboard. If you are up for it, then you will never be short of activities and events to attend while you are on the cruise.

None of these activities are going to be mandatory and you will be able to sit out anything that you didn’t like. You have the freedom to do what you want to do including not attending events that you didn’t like or leaving one that wasn’t what you expected it to be.

At these types of events, it is likely that you are going to be encouraged to join in but you are only going to do what you want and you’ll never be forced into anything. These are relaxed environments where you will be able to have fun at your own pace.

Expectation: A singles-only cruise is my sole option

Reality: Singles only cruises are going to be available to put you in a situation with others who are going to be single and wanting the same thing. These cruises are a great way to meet new people but they aren’t going to be your only way.

As we mentioned before, there is the option to go on a regular cruise. This won’t offer you the same amount of opportunities to meet single people but you will still have the wonderful cruise experience and you will get to meet with a large number of people.

There are also other cruises that will have events that are lined up for singles and also the opportunity to dine with other solo travelers. These will allow a solo traveler to have a more regular cruise experience but will have the opportunity to meet fellow single travelers.

Expectation: Sharing a room with other solo cruisers will ruin my cruise

Reality: While there are some great ships that offer solo staterooms such as Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, on most singles-specific cruises you won’t get the opportunity to have solo cabins and instead will have to share a room with double occupancy.

This is how most tours and cruises work for singles as the tour operator will book out a large section of the ship. The tour companies will pair you up with someone of the same sex though and it’s a great way to meet a new friend.

You’ll actually be in your room for very little of your awake time anyway, which make it very unlikely to be an issue. Instead of ruining your cruise, you are much more likely to have an amazing time with someone who will make your cruise even more special.

Expectation: I’m only just divorced or widowed, singles cruising is not for me

Reality: There are many people who are nervous about being single. Some of the travelers on these types of vacation will have never been in a serious relationship while there are others who might have spent all of their adult life in one.

Again, you will have plenty of fellow passengers and you won’t have any expectations placed on you. If you are simply looking to start to feel confident about dating and are only looking to flirt, then that is going to be absolutely fine.

You may find out that you aim to go on a cruise with one intention and end up doing another. Whatever you want to get out of your cruise, however, you’ll be able to get out of it. The idea is to have fun, whatever your idea of fun might be.

Expectation: My destination options are going to be limited on a singles cruise

Reality: If you are in a couple then you will be able to go on any ship that you like, any destinations and for any period of time. The only way to have that freedom as solo cruisers is to accept that you won’t travel supplement free and be prepared to pay more than anyone else.

The truth is that you are going to be limited. There are only a certain amount of cruises that are set-up specifically for solo travelers and the travel agents usually sell out of these very quickly as it will be a certain quota on a larger ship. This is unfortunate but it is the reality.

The good news, however, is that there is still going to be a huge amount of choice. While not quite having the same freedom, you will still be able to choose many destinations with different durations on different parts of the year.

When traveling solo, the world is your oyster

The overriding message of these types of cruises is that you are what you make them. If you are looking to have as much fun as possible then you will be able to do that but if you’re looking to be able to do something more low-tempo then that is fine too. If you just keep a few tips in mind , you can make an incredibly great time out of it.

Often with these types of cruise experiences, the reality is the one that you make for yourself. It is always a good idea to push yourself further and try to let loose, as you will often have a lot of fun in the process but you will never be forced into doing anything.

Generally what you find is that passengers will quickly get into their own rhythm and routine while they are on the ship. You will quickly get comfortable with your surroundings and happy with what you want to get out of your trip away from home. Acclimatization on these cruises doesn’t take long and you will be having a great time very quickly.

Hopefully this article has helped ease any worries that you might have had. Being on a cruise is a wonderful experience and the facilities that you have will ensure that you will never be short and things to do any people to meet. You are able to spend your time on a cruise ship thousands of different ways but it will always be the one that you choose.

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops.

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Scarlet Lady

The first ship within the Virgin Voyages fleet, the adults-only Scarlet Lady welcomes more than 2,770 passengers and 1,160 crew members. Debuted in October 2021, the Scarlet Lady boasts a collection of unique amenities not often found on cruise ships, including a tattoo studio, a record shop and a blow-dry bar. And instead of a buffet or a dining hall, the Scarlet Lady offers a collection of more than 20 specialty restaurants, all covered by the cruise fare. Standouts include Extra Virgin, a traditional Italian restaurant serving handmade pasta, and Gunbae, a Korean barbecue eatery.

The Scarlet Lady also deviates from cruise industry tradition when it comes to onboard entertainment. Instead of Broadway classics, cruisers will be treated to six original shows, along with "micro plays" that are performed throughout the ship.

Cabin sizes range from 105 to 177 square feet for the Insider rooms to nearly 2,150 square feet for the RockStar Quarters suites. The latter are outfitted with marble bathrooms and serviced by RockStar Agents who are available to assist guests 24/7. All accommodations feature mood lighting, minibars, free Wi-Fi and adjustable Seabeds, which allow travelers to transform their beds into couches when they want to entertain.

The Scarlet Lady sails to destinations in the Caribbean, like the Bahamas , from Miami .

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Use the app to book dinner reservations as far out from your sailing as you can, or 45 days out for most sailors. If you wait until closer to time or until you're on board, you will likely find that the most popular restaurants and dining times are all booked up. –  Holly Johnson, Contributor

Singles Cruises

CruiseMapper logo

CruiseMapper's  "singles cruise" survey provides information and tips on solo-cruising themed voyages on ocean-going ships and riverboats. Themed cruises for singles are an excellent opportunity for solo travelers to meet other single people sharing common interests or particular subjects.

This article is integrated with our hubs for  Theme Cruises (reviewing other ways to meet like-minded people on specially-themed voyagers) and Cruise Tips and Tricks . For your convenience, the following link jumps down directly to the  singles cruise schedule (listing lines, ships, departure dates, and homeports).

"Singles Cruise" - solo cruising vacations

Not very often, some "singles" cruise lines provide special deals on select voyages specially themed as solo travel vacations. Most deals are offered as specials on usually shorter itineraries and during low- or off-season times. However, each of these themed voyages are always well planned, limited as availability and bookable through (and hosted by) the cruise line brand and/or independent travel agencies.

"Single cabins" (aka studios) are no single supplement staterooms available on select ships only. Occasionally, special offers allow booking a double cabin at reduced single supplement rates. Same-sex cabin sharing is also offered by some companies, usually on smaller boats as well as on themed voyages.

What exactly is the difference between "single" and "solo" cruiser?

While a single cruiser wants to find others to congregate, a solo cruiser feels comfortable with the idea of a good time on her/his own. It is a personal choice to be alone, but it doesn't guarantee a pleasant vacation in our coupled-up society.

Singles Cruises - CruiseMapper

Many companies are being advertised as single-friendly, but only a few of them actually provide solo staterooms designed specifically to accommodate only one passenger.

This was not always the case- the old Cunard QE2 ship had some functional solo cabins designed specifically for families with nannies along. The company no longer makes these provisions for single travelers, and neither do other companies with their newer ships. But why is this? The answer is pretty simple - even small cabins can accommodate at least two!

The single cruising market today is not profitable enough to excuse single-cabin production. Revenue generation is of great importance to the companies, and a solo traveler spends less than a couple/family.

But there are real deals on genuine "singles cruise ships" - where it is still possible for a single traveler to find the rare single cabin, designed especially for one person. The existing "expedition" type ships also offer some solo cabins- a few, but pretty enough.

Singles cruise lines, ships, booking tips, information

Major brands/companies offer "single travel" deals rarely. When advertised as "Cruises For Singles", these voyages include various themed activities geared towards single/solo travelers only. In this case, "singles" means unmarried (often divorced) people who look to make friends, to have their "singles party" fun vacation, and sometimes - with a love connection in mind. This type of cruising is quite different from a single-person cruising where solo travelers embark on sea vacations.

Sea/river voyages for singles are operated with group booking deals - this way prices are cheaper, and all is well organized and pre-planned. Onboard activities include games, social gatherings, parties, dance lessons, speed dating events, guided excursions.

There are voyages with pre-planned events where singles are able to get to know each other. The typical age of travelers on singles voyages is between 30 and 60.

"Singles Cruise" deals - the single supplement question

Single supplement is the price a passenger pays to occupy the entire cabin all alone! Generally, staterooms are bookable at double occupancy. So if you don't want to share you must pay the absent individual price.

Unfortunately, a single supplement ends up with so excessive fees that singles would rather share with a stranger in order to save money. Single supplement fares vary from 110% to 200% (depending on company and ship), It means you'll have pay from 55 to 100% of full double occupancy fare.

Holland America Line and CCL-Carnival offer the so-called "single shares" - a solo passenger agrees to share a cabin with another (same-sex) passenger, and both pay the advertised rates.

Crystal  has a fixed 125% single supplement rate, so Crystal boats attract a great number of single travelers.

The super-expensive luxury brand Silversea offers super-single supplement fares of only 110% plus the possibility to make an itinerary fit your timetable.

How to avoid single supplement cruise rates?

All single cruisers hate single supplement rates! When you first find out that you must pay double simply because you have chosen to sail alone, you curse the company. But you will pay the nasty supplement - because there is no choice.

Many of the world's major lines make no allowance for single passengers and charge double occupancy rates. Not only that, but lines also charge the single guest additional port taxes and charges for the missing traveler as well. A few are the lines that are known for tacking on extra charges for single cruisers, in order to compensate for the lost onboard revenue that the second traveler would generate. Happily, there are a few companies that value solo passengers more highly and reduce single supplements.

But are there ways for avoiding this nasty single supplement? How to at least minimize its impact on your single travel vacation budget? Continue reading, and then follow the tricks ;-)

Ideas for singles cruise deals to avoid (minimize) single supplements rates

Book last minute! Booking a last-minute voyage is a possible way to find single supplement prices. Especially when the vessel has lots of empty cabins the company is trying to fill. This rule holds for about every line.

Low-season travel - sail during off-peak times! When a line charges normally 200% single supplement solo passengers sailing in their cabins, do you think it will reduce rates at peak demand times as holidays? If you sail when children are back in school, companies are more likely to deal.

Look for "not selling well" voyages! Certain vessels have weekend charters that leave them with a four-day sailing which is hard to fill. Such midweek sailing requires a week of vacation for working people. Let the travel agent check and see if the line would be willing to bargain.

Find these special single cruise travel deals! Search itinerary-schedule websites for unusual itineraries and lengths by ship. Then use an online booking site to check availability. When you find an offer with lots of availability and close sail date, the chance is on your side! Contact your travel agent to see if he/she makes a deal.

Check the Internet! A wide variety of agents specialized in single travel list double occupancy prices on the web- singles rates are right alongside. Many travel agents also have an inside track on sailings that offer single supplements that are quite advantageous. Some of the best on this market are linked in the below table.

Cruise Lines "Single Share" Programs

"single share" programs.

These match two singles by gender so that each pays the per person price for the cabin. But if you use to choose a matching program, you will be limited to a few lines offering such a program. UnCruise Adventures and Holland America have this, but most do not. You will also be restricted to the cabin category- share programs offer basic Inside/Oceanview cabins for cabin mate pairings.

Another disadvantage is that the company does not care about your age, sleeping habits, etc. The good news is that there are other ways for setting up a cabin share, more likely to work out!

Hosted Cruises for Singles

Another option that is highly recommended is the hosted singles cruises (officially named "Singles Cruise Host" programs). Lots of organizations sponsor voyages for single travelers and these group operators also help to find people to share with. They also pair compatible personalities. Companies like Singlesatsea, Singles cruise and Singlestravelintl (all COM-domains), organize single travelers in groups, often by theme or demographic (the 20s, 30s, 50s, and older). The better companies provide a questionnaire which asks about your habits.

Searching online for "solo cruise" deals

Search the Internet for cruise message boards. These will help to set up their own share arrangements. Message boards members can search the web for cabin mates on a variety of voyages. Post your voyage details, or respond to others who look interesting to you. You can find your voyage companion online!

This way you will have more options (cabin category, ship, line) and the opportunity to get to know each other. Plus, it's a challenge! Start with e-mails and proceed to the phone. Talk about what you are looking for and about your expectations.

No Single Supplement Cruises - why to book singles vacations, anyway?

Single cruise supplement is offered by virtually all the lines/operators, but the cheapest rates are on ships with "single cabins" (studios). Cheap "solo cruise deals" (with no single supplement rates) could be also offered as a bonus, cabin upgrade, special offers, part of a group booking, etc.

Single supplement rates depend on the company and ship - between 110% and 200%, meaning you're paying from 55% to 100% of the full cabin fare.

Some of the major companies (like CCL-Carnival and HAL-Holland America) offer "single shares" - for solo passenger who agrees to share the stateroom with another passenger.

The all-inclusive brands Crystal and Silversea have had single supplement rates, respectively 125% and 110%, but their ships sail on longer and way more expensive voyages.

Less popular for solo travelers cabin categories (such as balcony cabins, for example) may offer very reasonable affordable single supplement rates in the 150-160% range compared to 2-per-cabin rates. At the same time, popular among singles categories (like Oceanview and Interior cabins) have their rates increased. Generally, taxes/fees are no more than they usually are.

According to reviews and statistical data, currently RCI-Royal Caribbean and NCL-Norwegian offer the industry's best single supplement rates, but this is not a rule - and not on every voyage. As numbers, Royal Caribbean's deals are only ~US$40 more than the double occupancy rate. NCL's single supplement rates vary between 0-200%.

NCL's Transatlantic voyages offer a supplement between 120-160%.

In June 2018, Bahamas Paradise dropped its single supplements on all oceanview staterooms. The decision was based on Booking.com studies on solo travel showing over 40% of baby boomers booking solo cruises in 2017, and 21% planning voyages in 2018. The brand's no single supplement daily rates started from US$149 per person.

Booking "No Single Supplement" cruise deals

As sailings organized especially for singles, these are another very well-accepted type of land and sea travel deals. The "Single Parent" specials, though rarely available, offer great opportunities to share life experiences, to meet people with common interests, and to make new friends all over the world.

Who goes on Single Cruises?

Well, mostly single persons, of course. And while speaking of those single, but not alone people, I recommend you read Wikipedia's Single Person article.

Singles voyages attract mostly people between 40 and 50 years of age, who prefer ship travel as a way to socialize and connect. Single specials and general offers may refer either to dating services or a group-themed voyage for singles sharing the same interests, tastes, occupation, or of similar age, etc.

The "Single Cruise Over 40" and the "Senior Single Cruise" themed voyages are very popular for cruising solo.

No Single Supplement cruise specials - programming and activities

Traveling solo generally means that a passenger simply needs another person of the same sex as a roommate, to share the cost of the trip.

Some specialized in single travel agencies offer even roommate-matching services. The feature activities on a single travel ship vacation include introducing events, games, social gatherings, age-related events, dating events, parties, dance lessons, various classes, etc. As one of the most singles-oriented brands, Crystal boasts the "Ambassador Host Program" - especially for singles, solo travelers, and mostly for the unescorted ladies onboard Crystal's luxury vessels - with cultured and well-traveled hosts as dance and conversation partners.

Single occupancy deals are special rates as on most voyages, the company's official rates are based on double occupancy. To avoid paying double, check the company's single supplement rates, i.e. how much exactly you are going to pay for single occupancy. Pricing includes cabin, dining, onboard activities, and entertainment, plus themed for singles events organized by the travel agency (often, fares also include airfare).

Cruise ships with single cabins

Most studios are on newbuild ships , but many have been added to drydock-refurbished ships as well.

As to availability (fleetwide) NCL offers the most studios, and its best "no single supplement ship" is Norwegian Epic .

Epic's "Studios Staterooms" (128, many connecting) were specially designed and priced for solo travelers and are sizes 9 m2 (100 ft2). Exclusively for solo passengers, Epic has "Studios Lounge". Two more large NCL ships with solo cabins are Norwegian Breakaway  and Norwegian Getaway , each with 59 studios.

In October 2023 NCL announced that starting January 2024, the company has available for booking ~1000 solo staterooms fleetwide (across 19 ships). NCL also introduced three new cabin categories (Solo Inside, Solo Oceanview, Solo Balcony) which pricing/availability depends on itinerary/destination and demand.

Other popular boats with many single cabins are P&O Azura (18), P&O Ventura (18), Balmoral (64), Braemar (40).

Best Singles Cruises to Hook Up 2024

If you are looking to hook up on a cruise, one of the best decisions you can make from the start is to choose one of the best singles cruises, those that have a higher ratio of single passengers with whom you are most suited to possibly hooking up on a cruise with.

Whether you are looking for a younger partying crowd or perhaps of a more mature age hoping to mingle with a higher number of solo travelers within your age range, there are certain choices that stand out as more suitable than others that are less likely to be full of couples and families.

Even better are those that actively encourage single to mix through meet-ups and a range of day and evening activities.

Best Singles Cruises to Hook Up

Where it makes sense, we have tried to divide the best choices into age groups, but ultimately you choose the age ranges you’d most like to mix with rather than your own age bracket if you prefer and the ships that offer the experience and activities you most prefer.

Best Regular Cruises Lines For Singles to Hook Up

Some of the main cruise lines offer cruises catered towards solo travelers, and although there will be lots of couples and families onboard, there will always be singles onboard.

Some regular cruises will be marketed towards singles, even though not specifically a dedicated chartered singles cruise event that will provide lots of specific events and activities to mix singles in groups.

On a regular cruise, you’ll have to attend events and activities like everyone else and aim to meet singles that way.

Saying that, plenty of singles, both men and women, are potentially looking for cruise ship hookups.  It’s a known fact while away on a cruise vacation or mini-break passenger’s libidos tend to increase.

Below are some of the most popular choices for people looking at hooking up on a regular cruise.

Norwegian Cruise Line Singles Cruises

Norwegian Cruise Line cruises are ideal for younger solo travelers.  They offer a great mix of active daytime activities as well as good nightlife.

When it comes to awards, Norwegian Cruise proudly states on their cruises for singles and solo travelers page that they have been voted the Best Cruise Line for Solo Travelers 6 years in a row by Porthole Magazine.

Before you travel with NCL, you can start getting to know fellow passengers online in “Singles Meet & Mingle”

One of the main advantages of sailing single with Norwegian is that they offer single “Studio” cabins on certain ships in the fleet.

These include:

  •  Norwegian Breakaway
  • Norwegian Epic
  • Norwegian Getaway
  • Norwegian Pride of America

Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway are the NCL Breakaway class of ship.

The studio cabins are all located on the same deck, so all the singles and solo travelers will be together and can possibly meet in the nearby Studio Lounge.

Although it’s worth pointing out that just because the studio rooms are singles, doesn’t mean they are the cheapest cabins on the ship.

So if budget is a factor, you might find it cheaper to pick a double occupancy room.

They aren’t the largest ships in the NCL in the fleet, but they are packed with entertainment for their size.

  • Basketball courts
  • Mini Gold courses
  • Volleyball courts

The  Spice H2O  adults-only pool at aft of the ship that becomes a Dance Club in the evenings is a popular feature for singles to mingle.

Norwegian Epic has the only tube-and-bowl waterslide on a cruise ship.

For an unusual and memorable place to meet for a drink it has its own ice bar, but you’ll need to wrap up.

Pride of America is designed to sail year-round in Honolulu, Hawaii.  It’s a smaller vessel with open-air pools on top decks and plenty of restaurants and bar areas to socialize.

NCL Singles Cruises are good for : Under 40’s who enjoy active daytime activities and nightlife in the evenings.

Here we have covered Norwegian singles cruises in more depth.

Carnival Singles Cruises

Carnival Cruises are known as the “fun ships” and are popular with 20-somethings to early 30’s looking to party and have fun both day and night.

The ships are also popular with families and couples, so to find the best Carnival cruise for singles , choose short cruises which are popular with groups of friends and if possible, avoid going during school breaks.

Choose times when the kids should be at school and not away with parents on cruise vacations.

Even though there might be kids onboard, there are plenty of adults-only areas.

Look out for the singles mixers, which are often held on the first night and are a great start to get socializing with other singles.

All rooms on Carnival Cruises are double occupancy which means you’ll have to pay a singles supplement.

Carnival singles cruises are good for: 20’s to 30’s looking for fun activities day and night.

Carnival are our one of our top choices for best cruise lines for singles 20s .

Royal Caribbean cruises will often be frequented by families and couples, but there will always be singles onboard.

Not all Royal Caribbean cruise ships cater to solo travelers in terms of offering single cabins.

However, a select few do offer studio staterooms that don’t incur a supplement fee.

Some ships have a range of inside studio staterooms, virtual balcony staterooms, and various sizes of super studio oceanview staterooms with balconies.

They are available on

  • Anthem of the Seas
  • Brilliance of the Seas
  • Harmony of the Seas
  • Quantum of the Seas
  • Ovation of the Seas

Read on for more information on Royal Caribbean cruises for singles and who they are best suited to.

Celebrity Cruises for Singles

Celebrity cruises might be an option for those that like to have fun but not at higher energy levels, such as the likes of Carnival.

The Celebrity cruise ships offer good value for the quality, and the newer ships in the fleet offer single cabin rooms:

  • Celebrity Apex (24 single staterooms)
  • Celebrity Ascent (32 single staterooms with Infinite Veranda)
  • Celebrity Beyond (32 single staterooms with IInfinite Veranda)
  • Celebrity Edge (16 single staterooms with IInfinite Veranda)
  • Celebrity Silhouette (4 single staterooms)

Celebrity offer their own very in-depth Ultimate guide to cruising solo .

Virgin Voyages Singles Cruises

Virgin Voyages cruises are all for adults only and both ships have single cabins for solo travelers.

The ship’s aim  to offer some slightly different features to the most well-known cruise lines such as an onboard tattoo parlor to immersive entertainment experiences in a bid to make cruising seem more cool compared to the impressions some people have of the other main cruise lines.

Although suitable for a wide range of ages, the Virgin Voyages cruises are popular with 50s and over.

Chartered Singles Cruises

The most obvious hook-up cruises that are best for singles are cruises that are specifically targeted towards singles.

Singles cruises are singles-orientated events that can be booked via travel agencies.

You will be booking with a group of other singles onboard a regular cruise line ship, with other nonsingle guests who booked the regular way, or possibly the whole ship if its a smaller vessel.

The socializing of the group on each particular adult single cruise often begins online via a dedicated Facebook group.

On some occasions, the singles event organizers arrange meet-ups the night before the cruise in local port hotels

When it comes to choosing a cabin, you can have the option of sharing a room with someone of the same gender.

If you opt for your own room, you’ll often have to pay a supplement fee.

The ideal thing about singles cruises is there will be a clear itinerary of events for you to attend and virtually everyone attending will be single.

These cruises are much more geared towards mixing singles together, so as well as meeting up and eating together you’ll also be mixing via all kinds of activities and events, including:

  • Cocktail mixing
  • Dance lessons
  • Karaoke nights
  • Speed meeting
  • Theme parties
  • Trivia events

As well as the option to explore various onshore excursions.

Chartered singles cruises tend to be more popular with slightly older people who are over 30.

Some singles cruises will be marketed towards specific age groups for example, singles in 30s , over 40’s, over 50s, and over 60’s and seniors.

To make sure you are booking a proper singles cruise and not just a regular cruise marketed towards singles, ask to see a list of the events and activities in advance.

It’s worth pointing out that not everybody on a singles cruise is looking to hook up.

Some people just feel more comfortable mixing with singles, while others might be looking for a longer-term relationship partner rather than a short-term hook-up.  Others might be in a relationship already and just away with friends.

SinglesCruises

One of the most well-known examples of a chartered singles cruise is the aptly named “ Singles Cruise ” one of the largest singles cruise agency in the United States.  They have been organizing dedicated singles cruises since 1991 and offer some of the best cruises for singles to hook up.

At any one time they are typically offering 18 to 20+ singles cruises for 3, 5 to 7 nights, and more to locations in the:

  • South America

Singles-packaged events can be booked via travel agents like Singlescruises on a range of well-known main cruise lines, including:

  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean

If you don’t specifically book a singles cruise event and instead book a regular cruise, you won’t be able to participate in those singles activities, which reduces the chances of hooking up with those singles as they will all be mixing together and you wouldnt be able to join in.

DJ concert on music cruise

Music Cruises

Similar music tastes can be a great start to getting to know other singles on board.

There is a wide range of music-themed cruises available every year featuring world-famous artists, whether they be 20-40-year-old rock bands or new upcoming acts.   There are choices for every taste.

Examples include:

  • Christian music
  • Country Music

  • Heavy Metal

As well as music by the decade, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000’s.

Themed Cruises for Singles

Themed cruises are another option for mixing with people with like-minded themed interests.  For some, this can make it much easier to chat with people with a common interest.

There are all kinds of non-musical-themed cruises to suit all tastes.

Some theme cruise examples include:

  • Golden Girls

Couple meeting on a singles cruise

Party Cruises for Singles

The best party cruises for singles tend to be the short three to five-night cruises on affordable mainstream lines like

  • Royal Caribbean.

These cruises attract a younger crowd and offer a lively party scene that many enjoy.

They are all ideal for the 18 to 30 age range.

Cruising can be expensive, especially if traveling solo and having to pay room surcharges.

If you’re on a budget, you can save some money by cruising on older, smaller ships within the mainstream fleets. These ships usually have lower cruise fares but still offer a great party atmosphere.

Another tip is to find a single friend to go with and share a room.  Just let them know it’s your intention to possibly hook up while you are both away so they know what to expect and won’t miss you around when you do.

Lifestyle Cruises for Singles

Elsewhere we have covered “ swinging or lifestyle cruises ” and nude cruises .  These are more suited to people who already live the lifestyle.

Most of the people who go on these will be couples.   Although single men and women are welcome, it’s the women (sometimes referred to as unicorns because of their rarity) who will find it easier to mix with other willing couples).

Although it might be worth mentioning, one common signal people into the lifestyle is the hidden meaning of upside down pineapple on their cruise door or perhaps on their clothing or person.   Even if they aren’t aware of its secret meaning, its can be a flirty conversation starter.

Lifestyle Cruises Singles Policy’s

  • Temptation cruises allows both single men and women on board.
  • Bliss Cruises only permits singles onboard if they are staying with a couple.

For more information, see the best lifestyle cruises .

Best Cruises for Single Guys

The best cruises for single men are ones with lots of fellow single women on to socialize and mingle with.

This could be via onboard parties and nightclubs or via lots of various onboard activities, which offer numerous opportunities to mix with and get to know other single guests.

Chartered singles cruises are a particularly good option if you want to be sure the majority of the guests are specifically looking to mix wit a singles crowd.

Choose the ships most suited to your age range and activities interests.

As regards cost it helps if you choose a cruise ship with single cabins so you can avoid any additional surcharge costs.   Although on some instances, there are cheaper double-occupancy staterooms available

Hooking up with Cruise Staff

Hooking up with cruise staff is best avoided.  While cruise staff may be easy to chat with they are not there for social pleasure and are being paid to be friendly to passengers.

If the staff member was caught having a relationship with a passenger, they could potentially lose their job.

That’s not to say hooking up with staff is unheard of.  It does happen but is best avoided.  If you choose the right cruise, you should have plenty of other options anyway.

Your World Cruise frequently asked questions answered...

What do we mean by singles cruising.

A singles cruise is simply for someone who is travelling by themselves. They are also known as solo cruises and are an increasingly popular way of seeing the world. In rare cases, you will be able to embark a ship that only has other single people on board, but this is less common. For the most part, you will find that the people on solo cruises will be mingling in and amongst the couples, families and groups who are also on board. You might believe that you need to be actually single in order to head off on a solo cruises adventure, but this is not the case.

You will find a variety of people who are taking their own singles cruise. Some you will find are happily married, having left their spouse at home. Perhaps it’s been on the individual’s bucket list to take a solo holiday or singles cruise and they want to tick it off. Health problems might limit travel for one half of a couple or perhaps a cruise has only ever appealed to one of them. As with most things in the world, there are no set rules on how to holiday or who your travel partner must be, so if you’re thinking a singles cruise might be for you, go for it!

Why take a singles cruise?

There are so many reasons to take a singles cruise so if you are looking for some inspiration, you’re in the right place! Firstly, a singles cruise can be a fantastic way to see the world on your own terms. Any type of cruise holiday is one of the best ways to see multiple destinations and really get to the heart of the places on the itinerary and a singles cruise can be even moreso as you don’t need to make any compromises. You will be exposed to the kind of destination immersion which you would expect from private, guided, and in-depth tours, all supported by enrichment programmes on your singles cruise ship.

If you have an interest in say, the Pharaohs of Egypt, you can take a singles cruise to this area and learn everything you ever wanted to know, see all of the impressive sights and return home feeling fully satisfied that you have fulfilled one of your dreams via a singles cruise.

For some people, those who might be single by choice, divorced or even widowed, a holiday alone might be the only way you get to go away or see the world. So in that instance, a singles cruise can be perfect. You’ll be on board a fabulous ship, with incredible facilities and most of everything you need included so it will be a very easy holiday option. You will also find there are others on board in the same position as yourself so if you wish to, you could even make some friends. It will be a way of finding travel companions who have a shared interest in the destinations you are visiting who you can share experiences with and create lasting memories with. Some guests have been known to make friends for life on their singles cruise so this could happen to you too!

When travelling with a partner, be it friend, spouse or family member, you will find that from time to time you have to compromise on what it is you do. Whether it’s the excursion you take that day or the restaurant you dine in that night, there will be decisions to make. If, however, you take a singles cruise, you will find the freedom to do exactly as you please at all times.

So whether you want to lie by the pool, take a hike up a vineyard, take an art class or learn about the antiquities in a museum tour and then have room service in front of a film that evening, the choice is totally yours on solo cruises. A singles cruise is one of the best ways to get a truly personalised holiday experience that is exactly what you want and exactly what you need. So if that’s what you fancy, make sure you please yourself at all times on your trip!

What sort of solo cruises are available?

In the past, there were very few cruise holiday options, but in today’s travel-friendly world you have so many different options it can be difficult to know which one to try first. These are all available for a singles cruise too. At Panache Cruises, we are specialists in four key areas of cruise travel, all of which will create the perfect singles cruise too. We curate singles cruise holidays in the following areas...

Elite Ocean Cruises

If you are taking to the high seas on a singles cruise, at Panache Cruises we think one of the best ways you can do this is in complete luxury. You deserve to be indulged in your every whim and desire and this will absolutely happen on an elite ocean singles cruise.

Other benefits of travelling in this way are the fact that the ships are a little smaller and more intimate. This allows you to get closer to the destinations on your singles cruise itinerary but more than that, it means you won’t just be one of thousands, swallowed up by a huge crowd of people. Any singles groups and activities won’t be overwhelming in size and you will get to know your way around the ship comfortably and easily.

Furthermore, with such a positive staff to guest ratio on board this type of luxury cruise ship, you will find that the staff and crew get to know their solo cruises guests with ease, knowing their first names and drink of choice. This means that as you walk into one of the stunning bars, you will be greeted by a friendly face making you feel warm and welcome – this can be a huge comfort on a singles cruise.

As there is such a focus on service on these ships, every one of the staff will seem approachable and friendly and will cater to your every need. This will help hugely in the comfort levels you experience on your singles cruise.

Another point to note when it comes to an elite ocean singles cruise is that there are many more inclusions all within the price of your cruise fare. This makes budgeting far easier as you know exactly what everything has cost before you travel on your singles cruise. It is also much easier knowing that most of your shore excursions will be included in the price of your singles cruise so you can really get to see the destinations you are travelling to. There is often a choice of what is on offer in each port town so you can select the one which suits you best – this is what solo cruises are ideal for.

From active exploration to historic tours of architecture and even gastronomic adventures, you will be able to book onto different adventures that you’ll be able to enjoy with like-minded other guests. You might even find that there are singles-only group trips too so you can head out with others in the same boat and hopefully make some friends along the way, another key benefit of a singles cruise. When it comes to solo cruises, there are few better ways to do it than in the complete luxury of an elite ocean cruise ship and all the benefits it brings.

River Cruises

You will find that a luxury river cruise is absolutely perfect for solo cruises for many of the same reasons an elite ocean cruise would also be well-suited. Firstly, the ships are much smaller in size, carrying in the region of 150 guests at a time. This smaller size means that you will be able to get to know more of the other guests on board so if you are looking for some companionship whilst on a singles cruise, you will find it.

There is often a fabulous sense of community on board a river cruise ship too, as the guests are all united in their desire to see the same places as each other and make the most out of this travel experience. Warm and friendly, you’ll see that many of them are willing to chat to new people and make friends that will possibly last a lifetime especially if you are on a singles cruise yourself.

The main reason anyone chooses to travel on a river cruise is to see the destinations and with so many excursions included, you’ll find it is easier than ever to see the places on your wish list.

Hiking to the summit of a vineyard and sampling the local wine produced might suit some, but a tour of museums and art galleries will suit others – the beauty is, you’ll get to decide what it is you do. Solo cruises can be tailored just to you. Again, the service on board your singles cruise on the river will be attentive and personal so you’ll feel as though all your needs are catered for. This can be a huge help for passengers of solo cruises peace of mind, particularly if it is the first time you are heading off on this type of adventure. Look out for certain group activities that might be reserved purely for solo travellers and get involved in those if you want to spend some time with other single travellers and perhaps make some friends.

In some cases, you might even find that a whole ship is catering to single cruises so you won’t have any groups or couples on board whatsoever! These are not wholly commonplace but might be worth consideration if one becomes available for your singles cruise.

The ease of discovery, intimate ships with fewer guests, on board enrichment including lectures and other activities plus the excellent service offered by the staff and crew all combine to mean that a luxury river cruise is the perfect option for a singles cruise.

Expedition Cruises

A whole world of new experiences and discovery awaits you on an expedition cruise so whether you are travelling alone or as part of a group, you will be blown away by the sights you see on your tour of some of the most remote parts of the world. An expedition cruise is the right holiday choice for those who want to get more out of their holiday so can be perfect for a singles cruise.

Yes, most cruises are all about the destination but the destinations on the expedition list are another world away. And you’ll get closer to them than you ever thought possible. Have you ever wanted to walk in Shackleton’s footsteps in Antarctica? Or how about Darwin’s in the Galapagos Islands? Well, it’s all possible on an expedition singles cruise so it really is the ideal way to make those dreams you might have had for years, a reality.

The focus on any expedition cruise is very much about the places you will be visiting and learning as much as you possibly can about all of them so it can be the right choice for those looking to really get something out of their singles cruise.

You will be joined on board by an expert expeditions team who will also accompany you ashore to educate you at every single opportunity about the places you are visiting. From the topography, to the wildlife, the fauna, the history and the culture of the civilisations you’ll be meeting, they know it all and will impart their wisdom onto you. On some cruises, there will even be the option to plunge leagues under the sea in the on board submarines or take to the skies in the ship’s helicopter! So if you’re looking to be entertained and engaged on your singles cruise, look no further.

All of this means that any expedition cruise will feel like a wholly inclusive experience, no matter how many people you choose to travel with – the perfect solo cruises choice. You will be joining in lectures and on board chats from the team plus guest experts and afterwards, you’ll want to share in your discoveries with like-minded travellers.

This will be easier than ever thanks to the collaborative culture you’ll find on your smaller expedition ship with other guests as willing to chat to you as you are to them. Making friends on this type of singles cruise will be easier than ever.

If you’re concerned that an expedition cruise might mean a reduced level of comfort on board, then you need not worry as the world’s most ultra-luxury cruise lines have ventured into this space and provide an offering which is frankly unparalleled. This is the same whether it is a singles cruise for you or not. You will experience all the comforts you would expect from a six-star cruise and more besides, thanks to the adventures you can take.

First-class service that is as warm and friendly as possible will be provided as standard, as will fine dining across the range of venues on board. The crew will know your name and your tipple and your stewards will be able to cater for all your desires. Solo cruises on expedition ships will be as indulgent as they are exciting.

With smaller groups heading out on many of the excursions together, such as on your Zodiac inflatable boats, you’ll find that you will make friends with ease and no one will be left out. An expedition cruise will take you to the most beautiful and remote parts of the world, showing you a side to them you never knew existed. You’ll meet wildlife you’ve only ever seen on books and have photographs that tell a thousand stories. If you are really looking to see the world and you’ll be doing it alone, an expedition cruise will be an experience you’ll love from start to finish and will remember forever.

Yacht-Style Cruises

For many, the idea of sailing around the world isn’t quite the same when done on one of the world’s mega ships carrying as many as 7,000 people. They can be as big as towns, with different areas to discover and more facilities than you would ever think you could fit on a ship. Whilst this suits some people, for others it is not the way to take to the high seas. Fortunately, there are many other types of cruise holiday available which are on smaller, more intimate ships which are much better suited to a singles cruise.

Elite ocean and expedition cruising are two such ways but if you really want to feel like a sailor, there is no better solo cruises than yacht cruises. Sleek, stylish and with the size and with the agility to manoeuvre into the smallest ports in the most stunning locations, a yacht cruise will give you a whole different experience.

Fewer guests on board will allow those on single cruises to get to know more people and chat to as many as possible. Smaller ships with fewer guests also mean more intimate experiences and excursions, which allow bonds to form amongst them more easily. This will be even easier thanks to the fact that this is a very unique form of singles cruise, favoured by a select few and as such you are likely to find you have plenty in common with the other people on board.

Several of the elite ocean cruise lines have taken their luxury proposition to the yachts of the world, such as Scenic Eclipse, with other specialists also operating in this field and they welcome those on a singles cruise too.

With years of experience in providing world-class cruise experiences, these yacht operators know exactly how to treat their guests and welcome those on solo cruises as much as couples or groups alike. You will find a warm and welcoming atmosphere and by speaking to the crew, you’ll soon be with other solo travellers if you so desire.

With an all-inclusive nature on so many of these yacht-style ships, again you won’t have to worry that the bill when you step off the ship is going to be excessive, the perfect way to budget for a singles cruise. Instead, you can spend your time whilst on board enjoying yourself and sailing to some of the most beautiful parts of the world in complete style and luxury with like-minded friends on board.

Excursions will take small groups of you ashore where you will benefit from expert guidance and allow you some time to get to know the other passengers on your ship. And if you’re worried that the luxuries you prefer whilst on holiday, such as spa and butler services won’t be available on a yacht, think again.

These are readily available on many of the yachts, so just speak to your Panache Cruises Connoisseur, highlight your likes, dislikes and must-haves and you’ll soon be hearing all about the yacht cruise you’re heading on that will be the trip of a lifetime. All the elements you would hope to enjoy on your singles cruise are waiting for you on your yacht.

What sort of social life can I expect on a singles cruise?

In terms of your social life on board, that really depends on you and the cruise line you choose to travel with. Of course, there will be all manner of activities available on board, from quizzes to cards, to lectures to gym classes so you can get as involved in these as you like. In doing so, you will hopefully find that you get chatting to people and make friends – but only if you want to of course!

In terms of the activities specifically dedicated to singles on board, you will find an array of these available so speak to your Panache Cruises Connoisseur before you book to see which ones will be on your specific cruise. You will find that some cruise lines offer drinks and mixer-type events so you can meet up with other single cruisers if you wish to make friends. There might be excursions dedicated just to singles so if you tend to feel out of place around couples and groups, you can avoid this.

When it comes to dining, you can let the maître d’ at the front desk know that you are either hoping to join another table or are willing to share yours and that way you won’t have to dine alone if you prefer not to.

When it comes to the bars and lounges, as many of the crew will already know your name, you’ll always have someone to chat to and sitting at the bar can be a great way to strike up conversation with others.

If you would like some companionship and to make some friends on your singles cruise, we recommend you attend some of the classes on board too as these can be wonderful ice breakers. Afterwards, you’ll see friendly faces around the ship with whom you can chat about what else you have been getting up to on your voyage.

Your social life on a singles cruise can be as busy or as quiet as you desire so you can set your own pace to suit yourself.

Will I be lonely on a singles cruise?

As singles cruising has grown in popularity lately, you will find more other solo travellers on your ship than ever before. The cruise lines are well-geared to suit this growing number of solo travellers too so you’ll be able to take part in different types of activities in order to get to know fellow guests who are in the same position as yourself. That way you can make friends if you wish more easily.

Furthermore, on many of the types of cruises offered by Panache Cruises, you’ll find smaller ships with a more intimate and friendly atmosphere all with guests on board who are sharing in the same vision of the type of cruise they want to enjoy.

This means that you are likely to meet friends who might be part of a group or a couple too – you’ll find many guests won’t discriminate in becoming friends with single travellers!

The staff are always on hand to welcome you with a friendly face too and given most will remember your name, you’ll feel able to chat with them at your leisure. This is particularly common in the bar areas where singles might sit at the bar and start a conversation with the bar staff, only to be joined by other singles with the same intention! This can be a great way to meet people.

On a cruise holiday, regardless of who you have come with, you are never truly alone. With a full range of activities and excursions to take part in, the ability to join or share tables at dinner and with different events which introduce you to others, you’ll never feel lonely. And don’t forget; being alone isn’t the same as being lonely.

For many solo travellers, spending time in their own company is one of the key benefits of travelling on their own so it might be the case that you never feel lonely, even if you aren’t surrounded by people very often!

Will my accommodation be smaller on a singles cruise?

Again, this will depend on what cruise line you choose and even what stateroom type you choose for your singles cruise. In the case on many river cruise ships, they actually offer cabins specifically designed for those on solo cruises and these will be a little smaller than a standard cabin for two. Of course, this means that you will also pay a slightly reduced rate for this which makes it worth your while.

When travelling with an elite ocean cruise line or on an expedition or yacht-style cruise on a singles cruise, you will find that for the most part you will be travelling in a stateroom or suite that could also be taken by two people. As such, you’ll find no compromise on size whatsoever! Steps are taken to try to ensure that guests don’t have to pay the full fare of two guests in order to secure a suite suitable for a singles cruise with various offers and promotions available at certain times.

Will I have to dine alone on a singles cruise?

Some solo travellers will be more than happy to dine alone at almost every meal. Indeed, this could even be one of the reasons for choosing to cruise alone! But for others, the thought of dining by yourself night after night might be one of the most off-putting thoughts about a singles cruise. Fortunately, there are measures in place that can help you to avoid this if you would rather eat in company so you need not let it put you off going on solo cruises.

Many of the more luxury cruise lines allow for open seating across all the dining rooms so you will not be allocated to a set table to eat with the same guests every night. Instead, you can ask the maître d’ at the entrance to seat you with others who are open to it and who might also be travelling alone. Additionally, when you are seated, you can advise them that you would be willing to accept other guests at your table and would prefer to do so.

The availability of social events for singles also means that you are likely to meet other travellers in the same position as you so we would advise you to make dinner plans together in order to avoid eating alone if you prefer not to. Knowing you are already heading to dinner with a friendly face can put your mind at ease and allow you to enjoy your day a little more. It’s also extremely likely that you will make friends on your excursions or during any of the other activities you will be taking part in on your cruise so you could always ask to meet up with them in the evening too.

If all else fails and you strongly dislike the thought of dining alone with nothing to occupy you, you could take a book, laptop or smartphone to a quiet corner and allow that to occupy you.

Is it safe to cruise solo?

As with any adventure, holiday, or trip anywhere for that matter, safety can be a concern for those doing it alone and a cruise holiday will be no different. However, you can be safe in the knowledge that cruise holidays are quite simply some of the safest in the world. Being in such a confined space means that criminal activity is less likely as the culprit will still be on board the ship, making it much easier to be caught! No, cruise holidays are widely known to be safe options when it comes to all kinds of travel, but particularly solo travel.

However, there are different considerations to be had when it comes to your travel to and from the ship and when you are ashore in port towns. Again, the beauty of cruise travel, as well as booking with an agent such as Panache Cruises, is that every single element of your trip will be planned out perfectly to suit your needs. Transfers will be arranged for your trip and can even be booked for the journey to the domestic airport.

If you have concerns about managing your luggage by yourself, there are services available that we will be happy to arrange that whisks it all from your home, direct to your suite meaning you won’t have to deal with it until you get on board. In country transfers can be as part of a group or private depending on which you feel more comfortable with too.

When it comes to your time ashore, the excursions will be extremely well planned out and organised so that you are safe. Transport will be provided to and from the ship and in many cases, you’ll find they are fully guided so you are always in the company of other guests and your expert leader.

If you do find time to explore by yourself then the advice would be as it would be for any other kind of trip; stay within the safety of populated areas and do not venture off the beaten track. Keep your wits about you and in heavily populated areas, be mindful of how you carry your personal possessions such as a handbag and watch etc.

Be aware that pickpockets might operate in the area and familiarise yourself with the whereabouts of local police officers or emergency numbers if you will be leaving some civilisation behind and heading off alone. Listen to local advice and avoid places you are warned out.

If you will be hiking or biking across rugged terrain, perhaps ensure you have some supplies to hydrate and nourish you and even a first aid kit might be advisable in case you have a minor incident.

The world can be a very safe place so it is important to strike a balance between a healthy respect for safety and having the confidence to explore remote and unfamiliar parts. If in doubt, return to the security of numbers and try to find one of the local experts from your cruise.

If possible, in areas where you feel less comfortable, ask a couple or group from your cruise if you can explore with them – it is unlikely anyone would say no, especially given your safety concerns!

How do I get the best price for my singles cruise?

Firstly, you can opt for one of the single occupancy staterooms on a river ship – there are a limited number available on several of the cruise ships so you pay purely for yourself. If you can’t secure one of these, you will have to go in a stateroom designed for two people and the cruise line could end up charging you more for this. This may seem unfair, but if you consider the fact that they would be able to accommodate two guests in that space paying a full fare each, they would be taking quite a reduction to only charge one person the fare for the cabin.

As there are so few of these cabin types available and the demand for singles cruises is only increasing, you will have to move quickly in order to secure one. When it comes to cruise holidays, at Panache Cruises we are always big believers that booking early is the best way to avoid disappointment. From the price you pay, to the benefits on offer, to the suite, stateroom and even the itinerary you prefer, by booking sooner rather than later you are far more likely to secure exactly what you prefer to ensure you have the best possible holiday you can.

Having said that, some of the cruise lines offer reduced single supplements to make the price more favourable to guests travelling alone. So rather than paying a rate of 200% of the per person fare if two of you were sharing, you could pay as little as 125 to 150% instead. Whilst still elevated, this is still much better than paying double the amount!

You can also be savvy when you choose to book. All the cruise lines offer different promotions and offers at one time or another and on occasion, these can include ‘no single supplements’. That means, for a limited time only, that cruise line might be charging the exact same rate for solo travellers as they would be those travelling in a two but sharing a stateroom or suite. If you take advantage of these you know you’ll be getting the best possible price for your singles cruise.

In order to navigate this minefield of offers, timing and availability, we would of course recommend that you book your singles cruise with a reputable specialist and expert company such as Panache Cruises. We know better than anyone what offers are likely from each cruise line and will be able to advise you as to what you should expect to pay. Not only that, we will be able to tailor every element of your singles cruise to your requirements, taking away all of the hassle and worry from you.

Can I book a last minute solo cruise?

We do acknowledge that sometimes life gets in the way or circumstances change and some travellers would like to book their cruise holiday right at the last minute. This is of course possible and we will be happy to help with all the arrangements, however, it is not something we would recommend you do all the time.

With the smaller ships within our portfolio, there is the likelihood that many will be booked up by the time you wish to book and this can lead to disappoint. This is particularly pertinent when it comes to the river cruise lines and their very small ships with a very loyal customer base. Sometimes, these ships can book up months and months in advance so there will be no way of getting on board. If there is any space left at all, your options will be limited and you might not be able to get the stateroom or suite of your choosing.

Why Elite Ocean

Furthermore, when you leave it to the last minute, the pricing structure could be at their highest with flights costing me as well as the suites. When cruises are booking well, the prices tend to go up, not down, closer to the departure date so not only will there not be any price promotions (such as ‘no single supplements’) available, there won’t be any other offers too. Booking a cruise earlier can often allow you to benefit from extras such as on-board credit to spend whilst on the ship. The later you book, the less likely you are to receive any of these.

You certainly can book a last-minute singles cruise if you so desire and at Panache Cruises we will source absolutely all of the best options which suit you and help you make a decision. But if there is any way at all that you can avoid this way of booking and secure one earlier, we would absolutely recommend doing it that way instead. It’s far safer and more likely to guarantee the best cruise and suite for you.

Where can I go on a solo cruise?

The cruise holidays we sell here at Panache Cruises literally cover every continent of the globe – and the world cruises cover as many as six in one sailing alone! So wherever it is you want to travel in the world, we believe that you can travel there solo or within a wider group. With all the fantastic cruise ships and service to choose from, you will be spoilt for choice so it might be better to narrow it down by choosing your destination first! We have put a very brief overview of the different regions so you can start to be inspired before you get in touch with us.

British Isles and Northern Europe

A cruise right around your home country might not seem like an obvious choice but aside from the ease of travel in order to start it, it might be a great way of boosting your confidence if this is the first solo cruise you are taking! And not only that, there is plenty to see around our fair isles too with places you might never normally visit. Some cruises go as far north as the Orkneys and you might even get a chance to stop off in the land of fire and ice to behold that natural wonder too.

Heading south, a cruise around the north of France and Spain could take you to towns such as Bilbao and La Rochelle and even Paris too. You will be able to sample the local tapas delicacies and wander the Champs Elysées, and even stop off in the Channel Islands.

If you head further east, you could take a cruise covering the Baltics with all the history they hold and you could make stops in Russia too. This vast nation is filled with impressive structures such as the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral. Or how about sailing the majestic Norwegian Fjords? Gazing up at these natural wonders from the privacy of your verandah will take your breath away.

The Mediterranean

A popular holiday destination for all types of holidaymaker, the Mediterranean is a favourite with good reason. And the fact it is so familiar to many of us will make it the right place to go if you are a little wary about travelling alone. It is quite simply filled with places worth visiting from the ancient Acropolis in Athens, to the Colosseum in Rome, the crystal-clear waters will be enticing as you sail this beautiful part of the world.

This is the perfect place to try a yacht-style cruise as there are few holidays more stylish in the world than sailing around the glamorous ports of Monte Carlo, Portofino and Dubrovnik. You can walk the city walls in Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or perhaps take a traditional gondola ride in Venice. Dine on fresh seafood in all the coastal regions and sip fine wines on the beach in St Tropez.

If you want to travel like a Hollywood star, this destination has all the panache you need. But it is also the perfect locale for history buffs and foodies alike. You can generally choose from either an Eastern or a Western Mediterranean itinerary but if you can’t decide, don’t worry as we will be able to help!

Rivers of Europe

If a river cruise is the way you wish to cruise solo, then the waterways of Europe are an incredible place to start. There are so many to choose from offering different experiences across them all. In France, you can sail the Seine, visiting all the famous sites in Paris as you traverse its centre and head towards Normandy where you can be immersed in the history of World War II on the famous landing beaches. Try the huge variety of tawny ports as you sail the Douro in Portugal. Or why not sail the Danube, visiting as many as four capital cities? See the bridge which connects Buda to Pest in Hungary, or visit the von Trapp house inspiration in Vienna.

In Italy, sample all the local delicacies as you sail the Po and if flowers are you thing then you simply must take a trip on the Dutch Waterways when the tulips are in bloom. You’ll see windmills too and even make a stop in Amsterdam where you can cycle like the locals. Or if you have more than a passing interest in castles, sail the scenic Rhine Gorge and see how many you can count along the way. If you’d rather see Russia by river, take a cruise down the Volga and Russian Waterways and see original works by Rembrandt and Michelangelo at the Winter Palace.

Africa & Indian Ocean

This huge continent offers an impressive array of diversity, from Egypt in the north and a Nile cruise, to South Africa at the very bottom and the wildlife and scenic opportunities that promises. Itineraries in this area can come from both elite ocean cruise lines and even expeditions, thanks to the impressive experiences which can be enjoyed.

When cruising South Africa, you will see Cape Town, with its impressive and iconic Table Mountain looming above you. This vibrant and cosmopolitan city will enlighten you as to what difficulties the country faced in the past, yet will show you the progress of what has changed. From Port Elizabeth you can venture to the Shamwari game reserve where you will hopefully spot the Big 5.

As you head to the Indian Ocean, you will be island-hopping in one of the most stunning parts of the world. With water so clear you can see the colourful fish darting about across the coral reefs and a wonderful climate, you will be forgiven for thinking you are in heaven.

Rivers of Africa

If you’d prefer to take to the waterways of Africa, you can have unique and wonderful experiences here. If you love to learn about ancient civilisations and the mystique of the past, a Nile cruise is perhaps something which has been on your list of ‘must-dos’ for years. If you choose to indulge yourself in this incredible itinerary, you will see the kind of sights that simply don’t look real in person! From the magnificent structure of the Pyramids of Giza, to the slightly damaged seated Sphinx. Meet the mummies in the Museum of Egypt and perhaps even see how papyrus is made.

If you would prefer to see more of the natural wonders of Egypt, a Chobe and Zambezi cruise could be just right for you. You could see Cape Town and Johannesburg, but one of the most impressive sights to behold is the wonder of the Victoria Falls. The largest in the world, you will be astounded by their magnitude – it is no wonder they are a UNESCO World Heritage site. From a river cruise in this area you can also head to the Kruger National Park and spot that Big 5 that is so sought-after – just speak to us and we can ensure you have everything you need in your itinerary.

The Middle East

Arabian nights, deserts, souks, extreme opulence of ultra-luxury hotels, palaces, camel rides, mosques and flavoursome and delicious cuisine; you can expect all this and more on your cruise around the Middle East. You can see many different parts of this impressive and very warm region, so make sure you make the most of all the excursions on offer.

You will need to adopt your best bartering skills as you shop for souvenirs in the markets – don’t feel embarrassed as the traders expect this and it allows you to pay the going rate, as opposed to the advertised one! Head out onto the Palm in Dubai and maybe indulge in some retail therapy of a different kind in the mall. Gaze up at the towering skyline and in Abu Dhabi, marvel at this Emirati state has caught up with its sister, Dubai. Admire the Sultan’s palace in Muscat and you could even choose to see Israel and Jerusalem.

Exotic, dramatic and intoxicating, a cruise to the Middle East will be all you ever imagined and much more besides.

How to describe all the magic you can see on a tour around this magnificent continent? Again, your itinerary can depend on the type of holiday you want to enjoy but the beauty is, you can have a multitude of different experiences all within the same luxury singles cruise if you pick Asia as your destination. So many parts of this continent sit within our minds as far-flung and exotic places that seem a whole world away, but they are more accessible than ever with an elite ocean cruise.

If it’s India you have always wanted to visit, you can extend any cruise holiday with a land-based programme to see all the sights you’ve ever dreamed of such as the Golden Triangle and the Taj Mahal.

Perhaps you will head to Hong Kong, where the British influence is clearly visible across the island. See where the old world meets the new as you gaze upon traditional boats against a backdrop of one of the most incredible and well-photographed skylines in the world.

If it’s more of China you want to see, Tiananmen’s Square, the Great Wall, Beijing and Shanghai are just a few of the delights which await you.

Or maybe you would like to see the cherry blossom in bloom in Japan and head up Mount Fuji on the bullet train? If it’s World War II history that interests you, you can take a cruise which includes the towns of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as part of its itinerary so you can appreciate some of the devastation which occurred there.

Wander the impossibly clean streets of Singapore and admire the blend of cultures that co-exists happily together. Or head to Thailand and the hustle and bustle of its night markets, entertainment and street food. In Vietnam there is more modern-day history to behold as well as stunning scenery in places like Halong Bay. And if it’s natural beauty you are after then head to the Philippines where you won’t quite believe how white the sands are.

Rivers of Asia

A river cruise in Asia offers an entirely different perspective on the continent and allows you to see parts not acceptable by ocean cruise ship. Meander the waters of the Irrawaddy and see the locals with their bamboo rafts and fishing boats, and explore your spiritual side in Bagan where you will be aghast at the 10,000 temples and religious sites.

Or how about a cruise along the Mekong, which passes through many countries, including Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. This river played an important role in the Vietnam War and is still very important to the livelihoods of locals today. Along the way you’ll be able to visit Phnom Penh and see UNESCO World Heritage site Angkor Wat – the world’s largest single religious monument.

See the Forbidden City in Beijing and Shanghai Happy Valley as you sail along the waterways of the Yangtze. You’ll see much more on a river cruise here than you would a land-based holiday.

Australia & New Zealand

The far-flung destinations of Australia and New Zealand are a tempting bucket list option for many travellers Everyone has a vision of what they think Australia and New Zealand are like and now is the time to finally find out for yourself. Yes, it’s a long way to travel but you will be in good company on your ship as you will be with a whole host of other guests, quite literally in the same boat! You’ll be able to see manmade feats of engineering such as the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And then you’ll be able to see natural wonders such as the Daintree rainforest in the tropical north and spot the crocodiles relaxing on the river banks.

A cruise to New Zealand will show you just how different this country is from its lush greenery, to its calm waters of Milford Sound. Middle Earth awaits you as does Hobbiton and you’ll also get to learn the about the rich cultural heritage the Maoris hold in these beautiful islands. See the English and Scottish influences throughout and perhaps even head to Rotorua, a natural spa town.

You can see a great deal of this continent in one single cruise holiday so if you’ve always wanted to venture here, wait no longer. An organised trip such as a cruise with planned excursions will be the perfect way to do it.

South Pacific

Emerald isles, meets azure waters, coral reefs meet ancient cultures. Stone sculptures rise out of remote islands and warriors grant the passage into local villages. This part of the world looks even better in real life than it does in pictures and it will captivate you as it has every explorer before you. Whether it is an elite ocean cruise you are taking here or an expedition cruise, you will find that every moment will be as beautiful as the one before it.

Learn about Maui the demi-God and sail where Gauguin did. Enjoy the laidback vibe of island life and meet as many of the friendly locals as you can. Dot your way between quaint huts, volcanic sites and find every island more beautiful than the last. And you’ll even get to see if Bora Bora lives up to its reputation (hint: it does!).

Central & South America

Sail the Panama Canal and traverse between the two greatest oceans in the world. If you’ve always wanted to head to Rio de Janeiro, a cruise can certainly be one of the more organised and safe ways of seeing it. Take an organised excursion to see Christ the Redeemer or even the famous beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana. Visit Buenos Aires and soak up the sophisticated European atmosphere thanks to the influence which was left behind many years ago. Head to Lima and explore the splendour of all the colonial-inspired architecture and head to the Ballestas Islands to see what wonders they hold.

If it’s nature you are most interested in then you absolutely have to take a cruise to the Galapagos Islands – but read more about that in the expeditions section below. South America also forms the jumping off point for many cruises to Antarctica and again, this will be looked at a little more closely in the expeditions section below.

North America

On the West Coast, you can visit cities such as San Diego and enjoy the jazz music it is so famous for. Stop off in the City of Angels to see the movie industry in all its glory. Keep heading north up the rugged Pacific coast and you’ll pass the riviera of the region with pretty towns such as Santa Barbara.

On the East Coast, you can of course see the Big Apple and spend a few days here if you so desire. Head north through New England in the autumn season and you will be treated to a kaleidoscope of colours as the leaves of the trees turn their shades of golden and reds.

Alaska and Canada are both a true nature-lover’s paradise and with their wild landscapes you will be in awe of Earth's natural beauty. Spot the birds overhead and the bears fishing for salmon. See the Hubbard Glacier, cruise the Inside Passage, and explore further on the incredible Rocky Mountaineer.

The Caribbean

Yet more stunning islands are to be discovered from your ocean or expedition cruise and you can do it all in complete luxury. Uncover gems you have never seen before, as well as visiting old favourites. From seeing the sugar cane plantations, to listening to reggae beats, you can see pure white sands, tropical waters and enjoy the exotic fruits from this tropical destination.

See where the pirates have plundered and admire the coral reefs that sit beneath the surface of the turquoise seas. Choose from a western or an eastern itinerary and you will see very different sides to this beautiful part of the world.

Transatlantic Cruises

An iconic voyage held in high regard by cruisers and travellers everywhere, a transatlantic cruise should be a journey everyone should make once in their lives, especially in luxury. Take high tea, dress for formal dinners and enjoy all the majesty that such a decadent trip brings.

And nowadays, you don’t have to simply take a UK to US trip – you can start off some in Europe and end in sunny Fort Lauderdale as you join one of the ships for its all-important seasonal shift and repositioning cruise.

An expedition cruise is one which cannot easily be explained in just a few words, for it is an experience that is almost unrivalled. With a real focus on the destinations, an expedition cruise will take you further than any cruise has ever gone before to remote places and will show you a different side to them. From exploring Darwin’s laboratory in the Galapagos Islands, to meeting the whales, seals and penguins found in Antarctica, you will be exposed to more of the real beauty of our world than you thought would be possible on an ultra-luxury cruise ship. All led by an expert Expedition Team, you will find that you return home educated and satisfied with all that you have learnt and seen.

Grand Voyages

If you don’t quite have the availability to take a full world cruise but are looking to have a more in-depth itinerary which lasts longer than a standard cruise, why not consider a Grand Voyage? These trips will cover multiple countries and continents over several weeks and will allow you to see much more of the world all in a single planned trip.

You could circle around the Arctic and Iceland, or journey from the South Pacific to Valparaiso. Sail the Caribbean and the Panama Canal or head around Asia and the Indian Ocean. The opportunities are almost endless.

World Cruises

Perhaps the most luxuriant of all the cruise experiences, a world cruise is a desire that adorns the lists of many. And there is absolutely no reason why a single traveller should not enjoy one too! As you’ll be on board with the same people for a long period of time, it is even more easy for you to make friends – the sense of community will be present from the very first day you embark. You will get to travel to the most fabulous lands, near and far and you have several impressive itineraries to choose from, courtesy of the elite ocean cruise lines. So if you think you might want to head off on a world cruise as a lone and intrepid adventurer, get in touch with us today and we will be happy to discuss the itinerary which is right for you.

Here are Panache Cruises' top tips to ensure you enjoy your singles cruise...

This is one of the best ways of meeting people and building your confidence on your cruise. You want to be able to enjoy your holiday so if you want to make some friends and have some new experiences, this is what you will need to do. By booking onto whatever you can, it will ensure you don’t spend too much time alone and make some new friends along the way. On board classes are one of the best things to take part in for this!

Whilst this may seem a little contradictory to the idea of a singles cruise being all about what you want to do, sometimes trying new (and slightly scary) things is one of the best ways to feel rewarded. Plus, you never know who you might meet! However, don’t feel guilty if you want to stick with the things you enjoy.

You’ll meet all kinds of people on your singles cruise and whilst some may not seem all that appealing to start with, first impressions are NOT always right! Try to be positive and you might end up spending time with some really interesting people on solo cruises.

Did you know that there are certain cruises where you can take part in activities known as ‘voluntourism’? This is a way of guests helping local projects and charities to give a little back to the communities visited. They are a great way to do something to make you feel like not only have you had a fabulous singles cruise, you’ve made a positive impact.

If this is your first singles cruise, you might want to visit a place which is more familiar to you so the prospect isn’t too daunting. A singles cruise holiday is a great way of seeing a different side to places anyway, so it’s not like you will be bored seeing the same things – there will be plenty of other experiences to enjoy.

It is extremely easy to find a haven and stay there for the duration of your itinerary but we would recommend speaking to as many people as possible. That way, you’ll get the most enriching singles cruise experience possible and might make friends with people you wouldn’t normally come across in your walk of life back at home.

It’s ok to be selfish! If you don’t want to do something, you don’t have to feel bad for this is your trip to have your way. Sometimes being persuaded into trying something new could give you a new hobby to love so if there is a part of you that wants to say yes, go for it. But if there is something specific you would rather put your energy into, don’t be swayed from your path, that’s one of the benefits of solo cruises.

These people could be your port in a lonely storm so have a chat with the bar man who makes your drink every night and learn the names of the front desk staff. You never know when you might want a little chat with them on solo cruises or have a special request you would like met. By being friendly with them, you are far more likely to have it completed!

Remember, being alone is not the same as being lonely!

Being surrounded by others in couples or groups can lead you to believe you are lonely but think about whether this is true or not. Some of the greatest adventures we ever have might be the ones we take alone. You are free to make time for yourself, see the sights you want to see, and you are on no one else's timetable.

Yes, it’s nice to chat to others and share some experiences, but there are plenty of opportunities to make friends and enjoy joint experiences on board your singles cruise if you so desire. Plus, a solo cruise can be a great opportunity to learn a bit more about yourself and be selfish for a while. Enjoy this incredible trip by yourself, as with the right mindset, you won’t fail to have a fantastic time!

The Beginner’s Guide to Hooking Up on a Cruise

Sunshine. Alcohol. Swimsuits…

Is there a better combination for a having a romantic encounter? Yes, actually. Add all those elements and then combine them on a cruise ship where everyone will be together for several days, all having a similar experience.

Sexy lips

It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that hookups can and do happen on a cruise. Call it love, call it romance, call it a one-night stand. No matter what you call it, there are people on every cruise that end up getting down after meeting on the ship.

Of course, if you’re interested in hooking up on a cruise, there are ways that you can increase your odds… and a few things that you should consider before doing so.

We’re not here to tell you not to have a good time, but you should definitely keep a few things in mind before you try to get it on.

DO be careful

Let’s get this out of the way. If you’re going to try to have some romance on a cruise ship, you need to be careful. Even though cruise ships can seem like sanitized vacations where everything is safe and clean, hooking up with strangers always carries risk. Use common sense, and listen to your gut.

Don’t go back to someone else’s cabin if you don’t feel comfortable. Protect your drink and don’t overindulge to the point that you can’t keep your wits. Wear protection if you have sex.

Sexual assault is the most common major crime reported on cruise ships, with about a hundred cases reported on U.S. cruises in 2019 . Given the millions of people that sail annually, that may not be that many, but that’s little consolation to those who are victims.

This isn’t meant to scare you. Hooking up on a cruise can be a fun and memorable experience. Just don’t let it turn into a nightmare by doing something at sea that you wouldn’t do on land.

DO attend singles’ events

Every cruise will usually have singles’ mixers during the course of the cruise. If you’re looking for a partner, the playing field doesn’t get any better than this. Put on your best outfit, have a drink or two, and go scope out the scene.

You’ll find the schedule in the ship’s daily planner. They are normally in the evening around dinner time at a specific bar. While the mixers last about an hour, the key is to take the next step of extending from the mixer to other things on the ship.

For instance, if you’re feeling that things are clicking with someone, you can ask them to dinner or to have another drink after others might have left.

DO hit up the late-night bars

Let’s face it. If you’re wanting to get lucky, then that’s usually not going to happen at 5 p.m. You’ve got to be out and about when people are thinking about romance.

The best place we can suggest is to check out the ship’s bars after midnight. Here you’ll find people that like to let loose and have a good time (but that doesn’t necessarily mean they want to hook up). But just like on land, if you’re looking for love, a late-night bar is the right place to look.

As mentioned, it’s fine to have some drinks, but don’t get sloppy. Just because a cruise ship is relatively safe doesn’t mean you should let your common sense take a rest.

DON’T be bashful

You don’t want to come across as creepy by being too aggressive, but remember that your time on the cruise ship is short. There is no time to be bashful. If you see someone that you’re attracted to, make an effort to talk to them. If you wait until you get up the nerve, then your time on the ship could already be over.

So go ahead and take that risk of striking up a conversation… or making a move to ask someone to dinner. The worst that can happen is that they say no. After the end of your cruise you won’t see them again anyway, so there is not a big risk of being embarrassed.

DON’T be too picky

If you really want to hook up on your cruise, then you’re likely going to have to forget being picky.

Remember that even the biggest cruises will have at most about 4,000-6,000 people. Once you whittle down that number to only men or women… the people that are single… and the people in your age range… the number gets to be pretty small. The “ocean” just isn’t that big on a cruise ship.

If you’re looking for companionship during the sailing, then those that have the most success will be those who cast the widest net.

DO select the right time of year to sail

The demographics of a cruise ship change dramatically throughout the year. Want to sail with a younger crowd with more singles? Check out Spring Break or summer cruises. Cruises that sail in the fall when school is back in session will have older crowds if you’re looking for a fling with a more mature person.

In general, cruise ships have all ages on board. But as a rule of thumb, shorter sailings tend to have younger crowds. So if you’re in college, then a three-day cruise would likely have more people your age that are single. Longer trips tend to see older passengers.

DON’T expect to hook up with the crew

Young, international, good looking. The crew on a cruise ship — such as personable bartenders — seem like they would be a prime hunting ground for a quick fling. Don’t do it.

Crew members are on strict orders that hooking up with passengers is forbidden. It can easily cost them their job. Keep your efforts to other passengers and not the crew.

DO remember you have to share the ship

If you are looking to hook up on a cruise, the chances are you aren’t looking for love or anything long-term. Even so, the idea of getting with someone early in the trip and then ghosting them is not great.

Remember, you are on a small, floating city. If you do something like hook up with a person on the second day and then try to avoid them the rest of the cruise, you’re going to be constantly looking over your shoulder.

Instead, avoid any awkwardness by only getting together with someone you can stand hanging out with for the remainder of your cruise.

The family home where Captain Sir Tom Moore walked 100 laps to raise nearly £40m for the NHS during the first COVID lockdown is up for sale for £2.25m.

The Grade II-listed Old Rectory is described as a "magnificent seven-bedroom property" by estate agents Fine & Country.

In a video tour of the house, a sculpture of Captain Tom with his walking frame can be seen in the hallway, while a photo of the fundraising hero being knighted by the Queen is on a wall in the separate coach house building.

Introducing the property, an estate agent says in the tour video: "I'm sure you'll recognise this iconic and very famous driveway behind me as it was home to the late Captain Sir Tom Moore who walked 100 laps of his garden, raising over £37m for NHS charities."

It comes less than three months after the demolition of an unauthorised spa pool block in the grounds of the property in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire.

Speaking at an appeal hearing over that spa, Scott Stemp, representing Captain Tom's daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore and her husband, said the foundation named after the fundraising hero "is to be closed down" following a Charity Commission probe launched amid concerns about its management.

"Status symbol" pets are being given up by owners who get scared as they grow up, an animal charity has said, with the cost of living possibly paying a part in a rise in separations.

The Exotic Pet Refuge, which homes parrots, monkeys, snakes and alligators among others, says it receives referrals across the country, including from zoos and the RSPCA.

"They're a status symbol. People will say, 'OK, I'll have an alligator or a 10ft boa constrictor'," co-owner Pam Mansfield told the BBC.

"But when the animal gets big, they will get too frightened to handle them, and then the pet has to go."

She added people who want to get rid of the pets sometimes call zoos for help, which then call on her charity.

In some cases, owners don't have licences to own dangerous animals, she says, blaming a "lack of understanding" for what she says is a rise in the number of exotic animals needing to be rehomed.

She says people "just don't have the space" for some snakes, for example, with some growing to as much as 12ft and needing their own room.

The cost of living crisis has also forced owners to give their pets away, she says.

Her charity has also been affected by those increased costs, with the electricity bill rising to £10,000 a month at their highest, to fund things like heated pools for alligators.

Private car parks are accused of "confusing drivers" after introducing a new code of conduct - despite "doing all they can" to prevent an official government version.

The code of practice launched by two industry bodies - British Parking Association and the International Parking Community - includes a ten-minute grace period for motorists to leave a car park after the parking period they paid for ends.

It also features requirements for consistent signage, a single set of rules for operators on private land and an "appeals charter".

Private parking businesses have been accused of using misleading and confusing signs, aggressive debt collection and unreasonable fees.

That comes after a government-backed code of conduct was withdrawn in June 2022, after a legal challenges by parking companies.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: "We're flabbergasted that the BPA and the IPC have suddenly announced plans to introduce their own private parking code after doing all they can over the last five years to prevent the official government code created by an act of Parliament coming into force.

"While there are clearly some positive elements to what the private parking industry is proposing, it conveniently avoids some of the biggest issues around caps on penalty charges and debt recovery fees which badly need to be addressed to prevent drivers being taken advantage of."

BPA chief executive Andrew Pester said: "This is a crucial milestone as we work closely with government, consumer bodies and others to deliver fairer and more consistent parking standards for motorists."

IPC chief executive Will Hurley said: "The single code will benefit all compliant motorists and will present clear consequences for those who decide to break the rules."

Sky News has learnt the owner of Superdry's flagship store is weighing up a legal challenge to a rescue plan launched by the struggling fashion retailer.

M&G, the London-listed asset manager, has engaged lawyers from Hogan Lovells to scrutinise the restructuring plan.

The move by M&G, which owns the fashion retailer's 32,000 square foot Oxford Street store, will not necessarily result in a formal legal challenge - but sources say it's possible.

NatWest says its mortgage lending nearly halved at the start of the year as it retreated from parts of the market when competition among lenders stepped up.

New mortgage lending totalled £5.2bn in the first three months of 2024, the banking group has revealed, down from £9.9bn the previous year.

The group, which includes Royal Bank of Scotland and Coutts, also reported an operating pre-tax profit of £1.3bn for the first quarter, down 27% from £1.8bn the previous year.

An unexplained flow of British luxury cars into states neighbouring Russia continued into February, new data shows.

About £26m worth of British cars were exported to Azerbaijan, making the former Soviet country the 17th biggest destination for UK cars - bigger than long-established export markets such as Ireland, Portugal and Qatar.

Azerbaijan's ascent has coincided almost to the month with the imposition of sanctions on the export of cars to Russia.

Rishi Sunak has hailed the arrival of pay day with a reminder his government's additional National Insurance tax cut kicks in this month for the first time.

At last month's budget, the chancellor announced NI will be cut by a further 2p - so some workers will pay 8% of their earnings instead of the 12% if was before autumn.

The prime minister has repeated his claim this will be worth £900 for someone on the average UK salary.

While this additional cut - on top of the previous 2p cut in January - does equate to £900 for those on average full-time earnings of £35,000, there are two key issues with Mr Sunak's claim:

  • Once the effect of all income tax changes since 2021 are taken into account, the Institute for Fiscal Studies reports an average earner will benefit from a tax cut of £340 - far less than £900;
  • Moreover, anyone earning less than £26,000 or between £55,000-£131,000 will ultimately be worse off.

In short, this is because NI cuts are more than offset by other tax rises.

We explain below how this is the case...

Tax thresholds

This is partly down to tax thresholds - the amount you are allowed to earn before you start paying tax (and national insurance) and before you start paying the higher rate of tax - will remain frozen.

This means people end up paying more tax than they otherwise would, when their pay rises with inflation but the thresholds don't keep up.

This phenomenon is known as "fiscal drag" and it's often called a stealth tax because it's not as noticeable immediately in your pay packet.

That low threshold of £12,570 has been in place since April 2021.

The Office for Budget Responsibility says if it had increased with inflation it would be set at £15,220 for 2024/25.

If that were the case, workers could earn an extra £2,650 tax-free each year.

Less give, more take

Sky News analysis shows someone on £16,000 a year will pay £607 more in total - equivalent to more than three months of average household spending on food.

Their income level means national insurance savings are limited but they are paying 20% in income tax on an additional £2,650 of earnings.

In its analysis , the IFS states: "In aggregate the NICs cuts just serve to give back a portion of the money that is being taken away through other income tax and NICs changes - in particular, multi-year freezes to tax thresholds at a time of high inflation."

Overall, according to the institute, for every £1 given back to workers by the National Insurance cuts, £1.30 will have been taken away due to threshold changes between 2021 and 2024.

This rises to £1.90 in 2027.

The UK could face a shortage of cava due to a drought in the sparkling wine's Spanish heartlands.

The Penedes area of Catalonia is dealing with its worst drought on record, with vineyards across the region so parched the roots of 30-year-old vines have died.

It's left shrivelled red and green grapes languishing under intense sun, fuelled by fossil-fuel driven climate change.

Cava is an increasingly popular drink in the UK, with 17.8 million bottles sold in 2023 - an increase of 5% from the previous year, when Britons stocked up on 16.8 million bottles, according to the Cava Regulatory Board.

That makes the UK the fourth-biggest buyer, behind only the US, Belgium and Germany.

Workforce slashed

The problems have been compounded after Catalonia-based cava producer Freixenet announced it will temporarily lay off 615 workers, almost 80% of its workforce.

Under Spanish law, companies facing exceptional circumstances can lay off staff or reduce working hours.

This measure is expected to take effect from May and it is not known how long it will last.

Price rises

One industry source told retail publication The Grocer  that cava shortages would push up prices "certainly for next year" if there isn't enough supply.

This could last for years if the drought persists, they added.

Consumer expert Helen Dewdney told MailOnline the staff cuts at Freixenet can only mean one thing - price rises.

However, she added, supermarkets say they are not experiencing any issues right now.

Parents are being hammered by rising childcare costs, according to a new study that suggests they may spend more than £160,000 raising their child to the age of 18.

Research by Hargreaves Lansdown has found that parents with children pay £6,969 a year more than couples without.

Over 18 years and assuming an annual inflation rate of 3%, that amounts to a whopping £163,175, the investment platform said.

Its study also found that parents were less likely to have money left at the end of the month.

Single parents carry the biggest burden, with the research suggesting they have just £85 left on average compared to £365 for couples with children.

Hargreaves Lansdown also found just 23% of single parents reported having enough emergency savings to cover at least three months' worth of essential expenses, compared to 63% of couples with children.

Parents are also at a slight disadvantage when it comes to pensions, the research found, with only 43% of couples with children on track for a moderate retirement income, compared to 47% without. Only 17% of single parents have a decent projected pension fund.

Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at the firm, said "having children is one of the most expensive decisions a person can make".

She adds that as a result of having a child, "financial resilience suffers across the board", and added: "For single parents, life is even tougher, and they face far lower resilience on almost every measure.

"It means we need all the help we can get."

One of the top stories shaking up the markets this morning is that UK-based mining company Anglo American has rejected a major $38.8bn (£31bn) takeover bid.

Details of the attempted buyout by Australian rival BHP emerged yesterday  - sending Anglo American shares soaring.

The deal would have created the world's biggest copper mining company - with the news coming as the price of the metal hit record highs this week.

However, Anglo American has now dismissed the proposal as "opportunistic" and said BHP had undervalued the company.

Anglo's shares are slightly down by 0.8% this morning - suggesting investors may not have given up hopes that a deal could eventually be agreed.

However, overall the FTSE 100 is up around 0.4% this morning, buoyed by strong reported earnings from US tech giants Microsoft and Google owner Alphabet.

It's helped the index, of the London Stock Exchange's 100 most valuable companies, hit yet another intraday (during the day) record of 8,136 points this morning.

The winning streak comes after a week of all-time highs on the index - including a record close of 8,078 points yesterday. The score is based on a calculation of the total value of the shares on the index.

Among the companies doing well this morning is NatWest - despite the bank reporting a fall in pre-tax profits of nearly 28% for the first quarter of the year.

Shares in the lender are up more than 3% after its results were better than expected by analysts.

On the currency markets, £1 buys $1.25 US or €1.16, almost on a par with yesterday.

Meanwhile, the price of a barrel of Brent crude oil has crept up slightly to $89 (£71).

Self-checkouts - they're like marmite, people seem to either love them or hate them.

But the boss of Sainsbury's has claimed that his customers do  enjoy using self-checkouts, despite criticism that that machines don't always provide the convenience promised.

Simon Roberts told The Telegraph that there are more of them in Sainsbury's stores "than a number of years ago" as shoppers like the "speedy checkout".

But despite this, he said there won't be a time when they'll replace cashiers completely.

"Over the last year, where we've put more self-checkouts in, we're always making sure that the traditional kind of belted checkout is there," he said.

His comments come after northern supermarket Booths ditched self-checkouts at all but two of its sites after customer feedback.

Walmart and Costco in the US have also scaled back on the systems.

Let us know in the comments - do you love or hate self-checkouts?

We've all heard consumer advice that's repeated so often it almost becomes cliché. So, every Friday the Money team will get to the bottom of a different "fact" and decide whether it's a myth or must.

This week it is...

'Smart meters save you money'

For this one, we've enlisted the help of Dr Steve Buckley, also known as the Energy Doctor and head of data science at Loop...

So do smart meters help you save?

"The short answer is both yes and no," Steve says.

"Installing a smart meter by itself won't magically reduce your energy consumption. But, by giving you easy access to your energy usage data, smart meters pave the way for savings that you couldn't achieve otherwise."

Before smart meters, most households only found out how much energy they had used when the bill arrived.

By that stage it's too late to address wasteful usage, leading to what's known as "bill shock".

"With a smart meter, you can see your usage and costs in real-time through an in-home display or an app provided by your supplier," Steve says.

"This immediate feedback encourages you to use less energy. If you measure it, you can control it."

In 2022, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero found that homes with smart meters used about 3.4% less electricity and 3% less gas.

"This might not seem like a lot, but it adds up to a saving of over £50 per household annually," Steve says.

If all homes in the UK made similar cuts, that would amount to savings of around £1.5bn and a potential reduction in CO2 emissions by about 2.7m tonnes each year.

"Good for individual households but also great for the planet," Steve says.

Smart meters are often installed at no extra cost to the consumer - it's effectively free data for households.

Limitations

Smart meters are more or less what you make of them - a simple, free tool that allows you to see headline figures.

However, "without detailed analysis, it's tough to identify and eliminate" where you could be wasting money, Steve says.

Apps like Utrack, Loop and Hugo Energy can help you work out where you might be losing money by offering a more detailed breakdown if connected to your smart meter.

Those tools are often free, but you may need to register your card details as proof of address.

The tools give a number of useful insights, including looking at consumption in other households of similar size or monitoring where chunks of your money are going, such as to a faulty boiler or the "phantom load" (energy wasted by devices left on unnecessarily).

Myth or must?

Although smart meters alone don't reduce energy bills, they are a vital tool to help energy efficiency and cost savings.
