Less than an hour from D.C. , Baltimore, and Gettysburg, the town of Frederick, Maryland, is an amicable people-pleaser. Much like its longstanding neighbors, Frederick offers plenty of beautiful old architecture to behold, storied landmarks to see, and interesting histories to uncover. But what makes this city such a people-pleaser—and a true pleasure to visit—is how much else it has to offer.

Frederick isn’t huge; it’s home to around 82,000 residents, but it far outkicks its coverage when it comes to things that delight visitors and keep locals singing the praises of their hometown. Whether you’re in the mood to wander a vibrant downtown (try 50 blocks), spend some time in the gorgeous great outdoors, or treat yourself to a winery , brewery , or distillery tour, Frederick delivers. The county’s motto is “Rich History, Bright Future,” and if the city’s current character and charm are any indication of what’s to come, then we’ll be talking about all the wonderful reasons to visit Frederick for years to come.

The city’s 50-block historic district is a gold mine of opportunity. With more than 200 locally owned shops, boutiques, galleries, museums, restaurants, and bars, there’s never a dull moment.

Play “I Spy” with Public Art

Art and history go hand-in-hand, so while you marvel at the Greek Revival, Italianate, Federal, and Late Victorian architecture found in churches, museums, mansions, and even castles around town, be sure to look a little closer and appreciate the many murals, sculptures, and other public art installations around town. A few to look out for include the Lester Bowie mural on Market Street, the Clustered Spires glass etchings on the elevated walkway at Citizens Way, and the many sculptures in Carroll Creek Park and at The Delaplaine Arts Center and Sculpture Garden .

Whether you’re looking to add to your art collection, get a jump on Christmas shopping, or just pick out something nice for yourself, there all kinds of one-of-a-kind shops to explore in downtown Frederick. The Dancing Bear carries unplugged toys for kids of all ages. Curious Iguana offers shelves and shelves of books in every genre, and Retro Metro is the spot for vintage heads and nostalgic collectors. If you’re seeking a wider (but always expertly curated) selection of home goods, try Crème de la Crème or The Muse .

Take a Walk Through the Park

When you need a temporary reprieve from the hustle and bustle of Frederick’s always happening downtown, it’s easy to get a breath of fresh at one of two public parks located in the heart of downtown. At Baker Park , you can walk or bike on several paths around a picturesque lake. Carroll Creek Park combines nature with city life on a mile-long walk that offers peaceful creek views on one side and lively businesses on the other.

Catch a Show at the Weinberg Center for the Arts

If you find yourself still around after dark, there’s no better place to cap off a wonderful day spent exploring historic downtown Frederick than at the Weinberg Center for the Arts , a historic theater that hosts regular film screening, live music performances, author visits, comedians, and more.

Explore a Pre-Revolutionary Industrial Village

If you want to get a glimpse into the Frederick of the past, pay a visit to the Catoctin Furnace Historic District , where you can tour structures, dating between 1774 and 1820, that are authentic to the pre-Revolutinary industrial village. Expand Your Knowledge at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine

Dive a little deeper into the complexities of the Civil War by learning about a specific facet of our country’s deadliest war. Through three separate sites—the National Museum of Civil War Medicine , the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum, and the Pry House Field Hospital Museum—you’ll have the opportunity to hear thousands of stories and see hundreds of artifacts all relating to medicine and caring for the war's wounded.

Spend a Day in Catoctin Mountain Park

Managed by the National Park Service, this recreation area is a treasure trove of opportunity for outdoor pursuits. There are 25 miles of trails to hike, but you can also fish, camp, and even cross-country ski when the weather’s cold enough. If you only have a few hours, be sure to take the 3.9-mile hike to the top of Chimney Rock , where you’ll be privy to stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Hike to Cunningham Falls

Another worthwhile adventure to take on can be found at Cunningham Falls State Park.  As the name suggests, the thing to do here is see Cunningham Falls. Luckily, it’s easy to access thanks to a relatively flat 2.8-mile trail that leads directly to the stunning cascades.

Take a Long Bike Ride

If a pedal through beautiful scenery is more your speed, rent a bike and set out on one of the country’s most popular bike trails, the C&O Canal National Historical Park . The trail runs for 184 miles along the Potomac River, following the original C&O Canal and connecting the mountains of western Maryland to Georgetown in D.C. Fifteen miles of the trail run directly through Frederick County.

For a more casual experience, head to The Shed, the restaurant’s backyard bar and patio, where you can order Tiki drinks and a selection of snacks.

Start Your Day with Brunch

Nothing says vacation like a late morning of lounging, followed by a leisurely brunch. For the mid-morning crowd, try Hootch and Banter , Café Nola , or Showroom for a meal worth leaving the the coziness of your bed for.

If part of your regular vacation itinerary includes tasting the local craft brews, you can find several within easy walking distance of one another at Carroll Creek Linear Park. Places to visit include Attaboy Barrel House , Idiom Brewing Company , and Steinhardt Brewery .

Go Wine Tasting

For those who prefer merlot to a pale ale, Frederick is well-situated in the heart of the Western Mountain region of Maryland’s wine country. The Frederick Wine Trail connects eight wineries, each with their own distinct styles and vibes. Elk Run Vineyards & Winery was named one of the Top 100 Wineries on the East Coast and offers regular events like movie nights, live music, and even yoga. Another winery with gorgeous views is Hidden Hills Farm and Vineyards , which is located on a 100-acre horse farm.

Take a Distillery Tour

Complete the trifecta by taking a tour at one of Frederick’s many local distilleries. Downtown you’ll find McClintock Distilling Company ; Dragon Distillery , which has been around since 2016; and Tenth Ward Distilling Company , a woman-owned operation specializing in non-traditional spirits like absinthe, Maryland rye whiskey, and Genever gin.

Check In at a Classic B&B

There’s perhaps nowhere more magical to stay in Frederick than in the storybook Victorian home called 10 Clarke Place . With its scalloped siding, castle-like turret, and wraparound porch, the home practically screams bed and breakfast. Book one of five rooms and enjoy your morning with a three-course gourmet breakfast on the whimsical garden patio.

Book an Experience Stay

True history buffs can immerse themselves in the ways of yesteryear by reserving a night’s stay at the Forgeman’s House in Catoctin Furnace Historical District. The 1820 house has been restored to resemble its original appearance with antique furniture, handmade reproductions, and even traditional rope beds. Of course, a few modern amenities (a bathroom with a shower, gas fireplace, kitchen, and modern mattresses) have been added to keep your stay comfortable, but the overall experience of traveling back in time remains.

Don’t forget that you can take a blacksmithing class at Ms Caitlin’s School of Blacksmithing in downtown Frederick, MD!

That is so cool! Thanks for letting us know!

I love all the people high on drugs cause housing is unaffordable

What a silly thing to say. Really! This is not even a complete sentence. Looking good there Jaddy.

Crystal Grottoes has always been in Washington County. Don’t think the county line has been moved. If you’re going to mention it you should also include the Washington Monument on South Mountain and the Appalachian Trail which are close to the county line.

Other places “nearby” to Frederick City are the South Mountain Creamery, C & O Canal, MARC train, Potomac River

I am shocked to see that The Barbara Fritchie House is now an Airbnb. How sad for people who believe that this property should be a museum still. It is one of my most recalled childhood memories. Disheartening to say the least. What next…

The Delaplaine Center for the Arts is a significant site to include right downtown. Wonderful art exhibitions, gifts and functions held here in former mill.

Antietam National Battlefield is worth the extra drive and has an incredible set of offerings for all types of visitors. Drive it. Walk it. Hike it. Make sure you stop by the Visitors Center for more information. And please pay the park fee. It helps sustain these national treasures.

I’ll be brief. About 3 years ago, I visited Crystal Grottoes with my girlfriend, a Frederick native. We were treated differently than the others on the tour and felt unwelcome. I’ll let you decide if it may have been due to us being an interracial couple.

Having disclosed that, this is my most objective opinion: Crystal Grottoes is to Luray Caverns what your local yard sale is to Target. Sure, there are some interesting things, but it may not be worth your time.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, things change when you cross over from Frederick to Washington County.

While not technically in Frederick, The Comus Inn is a short drive south and is a really fun place to spend a day. This isn’t the old Comus Inn…it’s been completely renovated and features a great family-friendly vibe with live music, an outdoor beer garden, a gaming lawn, and plenty of other activities.

Dear Megan and Aram; I live in the stunningly beautiful, extremely diverse state of California, have traveled a good part of the world extensively, served in Verginia in 1967, where getting into a car and exploring the the Eastern States when on down time, was norm, and I lived in Central and Southern Europe for decades. I say all this to let you know that I very well understand your undertaking in regards to your travel offering. What a nice job you did. What nice language and discriptions. I have met lovely people all of my 75 years of travel and living, and it feels like you belong to these folks. Thanks for your good work.

one of the best things in frederick in which you are not far from is the 3 covered wooden bridges that we have as well as highrock overlook

Notes from article: Catoctin and Cunningham Falls are in Frederick county 25 to 30 minutes north of the city of Frederick. Notes from some comments: Crystal Grottoes and Antietam National Battlefield are outside the towns of Boonsboro and Sharpsburg, respectively, in Washington county. The blog is about “Frederick” so these places have nothing to do with Frederick

If you’ve never been to the historic downtown area of Frederick, this is a must-stop for all visitors or new residents. This is where I recommend most people spend their time, because there really is a ton to do.

frederick places to visit

Shopping in Frederick MD

If you want to go shopping downtown, there is a huge selection of locally owned mom-and-pop stores (well over 100) along the downtown strip and in the branching streets. With big sidewalks, walking around downtown is both safe and easy.

Shopping at The Art Collective in Frederick Maryland

Explore Locally-Owned Stores

The Art Collective has a great collection of local and hand-crafted goods made by artists from the area, and is my favorite stop when I’m getting something for someone out of town or new to the area.

Shopping at Earthly Elements in Frederick Maryland

Earthly Elements is another great stop, and full of crystals, minerals, gemstones, and even jewelry.

Curious Iguana Bookstore in Frederick Maryland

Bookstores in Frederick MD

If you love books, the Curious Iguana is my favorite independent bookstore in the area, and often does book signings or events to keep it interesting.

Antique Shops in Frederick MD at Emporium Antiques

Frederick Antique Shops

There’s plenty of antiquing available downtown, but I love Emporium Antiques , which is basically a giant warehouse full of tables from a variety of antique vendors. When I say giant, I mean warehouse-sized. It’s amazing .

Great Stuff by Paul is also a fun one to stop into, and the inventory there seems to change pretty constantly – there’s always something new when I visit.

I Made This Pottery in Frederick MD

Downtown Activities

There are plenty of activities downtown, too, if you need a break from shopping or eating.

I Made This! Pottery Studio is a paint-your-own pottery gallery where you can paint mugs, statues, plates, or more. They have everything you need, so just bring yourself.

After you’re done painting your piece, the studio glazes and fires it, and you’ll be able to swing by and pick it up once it’s complete.

Clue IQ Escape Room in Frederick MD

There are also two escape rooms downtown, Clue IQ and Escape This . I’ve tried them both, and while I like Clue IQ a little better, both are fun choices!

ghost Tour in Frederick MD

Don’t leave without doing a ghost tour of the historic downtown area… with literally hundreds of years of history, and a literal battlefield not far away, ghosts have to be close, right?

Monocacy National Battlefield in Frederick MD

History and Museums in Frederick

If you’re a history buff, Frederick should be your spot . The Monocacy National Battlefield was an important battlefield during the Civil War, and often does fun weekend special events or recreations, and tour the Worthington House.

National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick MD

The National Museum of Civil War Medicine is a fascinating look at how far we’ve come with science and surgical practices. Plan your day right, and you can go on a walking tour with the museum docent to see the typical day of a doctor or surgeon during the war.

Rose Hill Manor in Frederick Maryland

Rose Hill Manor Park & Museum has great child-friend exhibits on the history of the area in the home of Maryland’s first elected Governor, plus a beautiful park to boot.

Schifferstadt Architectural Museum in Frederick Maryland

The Schifferstadt Architectural Museum is located in the oldest standing home in all of Frederick, built in 1758, and remains one of the best examples of German colonial architecture. When open, tours of the house and land are both available.

The Delaplaine Visual Arts and Education in Frederick Maryland

Frederick Arts & Entertainment

Honestly, I could talk for days about everything Frederick has to offer. It’s such a hidden gem – those who live here know what awesome things Frederick has to offer, but many things get overlooked by visitors.

The Delaplaine Visual Arts and Education in Frederick Maryland

The Delaplaine Arts Center offers classes for both teens and adults, and has changing exhibits.

Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre & Children’s Theatre is a great, unique date night when you’re ‘over’ the typical date night fare.

Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick Maryland

Located downtown, the Weinberg Center for the Arts has regular music, live theatre, and even films.

Sky Stage in Frederick Maryland

Sky Stage is set in an old (think pre-Revolutionary War old) building downtown. The roof was damaged by fire, and now just the core of the building remains. Volunteers clean it up every year, and live music, comedy, and even yoga classes are held inside.

Carrol Creek in Frederick Maryland

Frederick Parks Provide lots of green spaces!

Let’s step outside downtown for a minute – if you’re looking to get out into nature, or even on the water, Frederick has that, too.

Carrol Creek in Frederick Maryland

Carroll Creek Linear Park is the most unique park in Frederick, and best visited between June and October if you want to see the water garden in full bloom.

Yes, water garden . It’s a stunning experience filled with art installations, bridges and lily pads in bloom.

Baker Park in Frederick MD

Baker Park has a beautiful pond that’s perfect for a picnic.

Staley Park has a baseball field, playground, and basketball court.

Lake Whittier is a little farther out, but it’s beautiful . When you’re walking around the lake it’s easy to forget you’re so close to the city.

Pinecliff Park has a boat ramp if you want to get out on Monocacy River.

Utica District Park is huge, with pavilions you can rent, horseshoe pits, grills, and more.

Terrace Lanes Bowling Center and Skate Frederick are both great ways to throwback to your childhood and spend the day.

McClintock Distillery - one of the Frederick Distilleries

Frederick Distilleries and Breweries

If you want to try out the drinking in Frederick County, the downtown area of Frederick should be your first stop. Frederick is actually known for having a great variety of distilleries and breweries, and the downtown area is central to that.

Tenth Ward Distilling Company in Frederick MD

Tenth Ward Distilling Company , and McClintock Distilling are within a few blocks of each other, and both really fun choices.

Steinhardt Brewing is two blocks east, and – in my opinion – has some of the best ales in the area. If you plan in advance, most of these locations allow tours so you can actually go in and see how everything is made.

Note: Dragon Distillery is outside of the downtown area, but totally worth checking out!

Flying Dog Brewery is about 10 minutes outside of downtown but the biggest brewery in the state of Maryland, and has a great tasting room. The tour is free, too!

Hooch and Banter in Frederick MD

Restaurants in Frederick MD

If you like BBQ, top off your visit with Black Hog , a local BBQ chain that smokes on-site.

Café 611 brings southern cooking to downtown Frederick, and often hosts local bands or comedians, which is always a great date night.

Lazy Fish probably has the best sushi in the area, and Bushwallers is a fun, semi-authentic Irish pub with a huge bar selection.

If you’re looking for an ultra-classy date night experience, be sure to check out Volt , owned by Top Chef alumni and Food Network regular Bryan Voltaggio. Careful, though – it can take weeks or even months to score a reservation.

Sailing through Frederick

Frederick has a flourishing economy — thanks, in large part, to its proximity to the nation’s capital and to Baltimore (both about 50 miles away) and the large employers that call the city home (like Fort Detrick, a U.S. Army installation, and the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research). Over the next four years, Frederick’s job market is expected to grow 10%; one of the highest-anticipated spurts of growth in the country.

But make no mistake: This Eastern Seaboard city has a rich local identity that extends far beyond its economic pull. Residents enjoy access to a 50-block downtown historic district with more than 200 shops, art galleries, restaurants and a public art trail. When families go out to eat, they’re spoiled with choice — local favorites include aka Friscos , Isabella’s and Thacher & Rye , the newest outpost from “Top Chef” alum (and Frederick resident) Bryan Voltaggio. Craft beer enthusiasts can wind down at Attaboy Beer, which has a dog-friendly garage, or Milkhouse Brewery. North Market Pop Shop , which lays claim to the largest selection of bottled sodas on the East Coast, is a great kid-friendly option.

How much of the solar eclipse will be seen in Maryland, and at what time?

By Miana Massey

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 9:33 AM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE - An estimated 31.6 million people could witness a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8. While people in Maryland will only see a portion of the eclipse, gazers in the region can still expect an impressive celestial event.

"It is special that it's happening close to home and it will be the last one easily reachable from Baltimore for 20 years or so," said Kevin Lewis, an assistant professor of planetary physics at Johns Hopkins University.

When can the solar eclipse be seen in Maryland?

Lewis says in Maryland we will see a partial eclipse that blocks 85 to 90 percent of the sun, beginning around 2:05 pm.

"You will see the moon slowly cross the face of the sun over that time and the peak will be about 3:21 pm," Lewis said.

How to safely view the eclipse in Maryland

If you're planning to gaze upon this once-in-a-lifetime event, you'll need special glasses to avoid permanent eye damage. Regular sunglasses, even those that are polarized and that offer 100 percent UV protection, are not suitable.

"You definitely don't want to look at the sun even during a total eclipse, and if you want to look at the sun, you are going to have to use special eclipse glasses," Lewis said.

Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library branch is offering free solar eclipse viewing glasses, but supply is limited.

You could also make a pinhole viewer to safely watch the moon move across the path of the sun.

For more information on the eclipse,  visit this website . Here's how you can  view the eclipse .

Where to buy solar eclipse glasses near me? Some locations may still have glasses for last-minute eclipse watchers

frederick places to visit

Today's the day when the moon's shadow will (partially) blot out the sun for millions of Floridians, and some of them may still be scrambling for eclipse glasses so they can safely look at it without frying their eyes. Where can you still find them?

You may have to call around, or do some driving. Many retail locations have been selling solar eclipse glasses this year and some places have been giving them away, but availability is "while supplies last" and that will be different for every place.

There's an eclipse today? The procrastinator's guide to viewing the solar eclipse in Florida

Where can I find eclipse glasses?

Here are some places to check. Remember, some may have sold out, and not all locations may have been carrying them. Make sure any eclipse glasses you buy are legitimate and include an ISO rating, an ISO number and an address, avoid any that say "NASA Approved," and test them before you look up .

7-Eleven, Buc-ee's, Circle K and more

You may not have to go farther than the end of your street. Many convenience stores and gas stations have been carrying eclipse glasses and may still have some in stock.

Eclipse glasses have been spotted at 7-Eleven , Circle K, and Buc-ee's locations and many individual stores may have jumped on the opportunity.

Fake eclipse glases on sale online: Are yours safe? How to test before the April solar eclipse

Big chain stores such as Walmart, Lowes

Walmart has offered a wide variety of eclipse glasses in different styles, so has Target . However, all of the glasses on their websites are shipping only which will be a little late, so check your local store for availability.

Some other places where eclipse glasses have been spotted:

  • Ace Hardware
  • Cracker Barrel

Does Publix have eclipse glasses?

No, Publix did not carry eclipse glasses this year, according to a local customer service rep.

Warby Parker, Sonic offering free eclipse glasses

Prescription eyeglasses retailer Warby Parker began handing out free eclipse glasses at their locations on April 1 so definitely call first.

Sonic Drive-in locations are offering free eclipse glasses with the purchase of their new Blackout Sonic Float.

Does Amazon offer same-day delivery of eclipse glasses?

Online stores are great for fast service, but you may want to give it a miss this time. The   American Astronomical Society (AAS) does not recommend buying eclipse glasses online due to the number of counterfeit, unsafe glasses that have hit the market this year.

Shooting the eclipse with your phone: Can I take a photo of the eclipse with my phone? Yes, but take these steps so you don't fry it

Do I need to wear solar eclipse glasses?

If you plan to look directly at the sun, yes. Even a brief glance may cause temporary or permanent damage to your eyes and eyesight.

"Do NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer," NASA advises . "The concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury."

How can I tell if my eclipse glasses are legitimate?

If you didn't buy your eclipse glasses directly from one of the vetted venders on the AAS list or a trusted source, check the text on the glasses for the  ISO 12312-2 standard listing and the address of the company. But these can be copied.

Don't trust any glasses that say they are NASA Approved . NASA doesn't do that.

Test your glasses first by putting them on inside and looking at a strong light source. You shouldn't be able to see anything, according to the AAS, although very bright lights may show up but would be very faint.

Go outside, put them on, and look at sunlight reflections or glance at the sun very quickly. You shouldn't see anything around you and the sun should appear to be a "sharp-edged, round disk" that's comfortably bright.

Can I watch the eclipse without looking at it?

Yes! If you don't manage to get glasses in time, there are several ways to see the eclipse that won't risk your eyes with items you probably have around the home.

Anything with a round hole in it can be held up to cast an image of the eclipse onto the ground or a sheet of white paper. Pinhole projectors, colanders, a slotted spoon, a Ritz cracker, even lacing your fingers together.

Or you can look under a tree. The sun shining through tree leaves and branches creates its own pinhole projector, casting lots of little crescent-moon shapes on the ground.

What time is the eclipse in Florida?

The eclipse will last roughly 2½ hours in Florida, starting around 1:40 p.m. EDT and ending around 4:17 EDT. The time of maximum coverage will be just before 3 p.m. EDT for most of the state.

You can find eclipse times for your ZIP code on the map below, just tap your location:

Last-Minute Solar Eclipse Glasses: Here's How to Find a Pair

Warby Parker says its stores are out of stock of free ones, but you still have other options. Also, make sure you test your glasses.

Warby Parker eclipse glasses

It's essential to wear a proper pair of eclipse glasses, or a  box pinhole projector  for indirect viewing , if you'll be viewing the skies during the solar eclipse today . Except for the brief period of total darkness or totality, looking at any portion of the sun or partial eclipse can cause damage to your eyes .

Warby Parker , the popular prescription glasses shop, was making it a little easier by offering free solar eclipse glasses at its stores. However, the company is now out of stock, according to an automated message on Warby Parker's customer service line, and information from a company representative provided to CNET Sunday evening. (If you don't want to take my word for it, you can try calling your local Warby Parker store using this store-locator map .)

We're down to the wire. But if you're searching last- last minute, below are a couple more ways to snag a pair of glasses that come from the American Astronomical Society's  preapproved list of sellers  that make legitimate (i.e. safe) eclipse glasses.

If you bought your glasses from a store or source outside the list of safe sellers, it's an extra-good idea to test your glasses before the eclipse  to make sure they're the real deal, especially amid recent  reports of recalls of eclipse glasses, including some stores in Missouri.

Where else to look for free glasses (or buy some last minute)

A good option for finding free solar eclipse glasses is to visit your local library to see if it's offering any. The AAS has a map of  libraries offering certified glasses . Or, you can give your library a call.

If you're out of free options, there are some chain stores, restaurants and convenience stores selling certified solar eclipse glasses, according to the AAS, although whether they carry them will depend on the individual location.

The following stores sell certified glasses in-shop, as identified by the AAS :

  • Walmart
  • Cracker Barrel
  • Bucc-ee's
  • Meijer
  • Menards

If you get to your local Warby Parker store and it's already run out of eclipse glasses, the company says it also has  pinhole projectors  on hand. (You can also  make your own   pinhole projector .)

Wherever you get your glasses, especially if you buy them from a source that hasn't been vetted specifically by the AAS, it's a good idea to give them a test run before the big event. To help you figure it out, the  American Academy of Ophthalmology says that while looking through them, no light of "ordinary brightness" should be visible through your eclipse glasses or solar viewer; only the sun or sunlight that's reflected somewhere.

For more on solar eclipse eye safety and where to find glasses ahead of time, here's what an optometrist would like you to know . Also, here's more information about the path of totality and how to watch the solar eclipse .

Total solar eclipse livestream: Watch live feeds from path of totality of historic eclipse

frederick places to visit

Ready or not, the total solar eclipse is arriving soon in the path of millions of Americans.

USA TODAY is providing live coverage of the 2024 solar eclipse beginning at noon E.T. on Monday in a number of areas along the eclipse's path of totality, including Washington, D.C., Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana and New York. You can watch live at the embedded video at the top of the page or on USA TODAY's YouTube channel .

NASA will also stream coverage of the solar eclipse on its various social channels, including an official broadcast and a telescope feed on YouTube.

This is the first solar eclipse to pass through North America in seven years. The last eclipse in 2017 passed in a different direction from this year's path of totality, stretching from the Pacific Northwest in a southwest path to the lower Atlantic states and into the ocean.

2024 Solar eclipse: What's the best place to see it?

Much of the country will experience the eclipse in some way, while the total solar eclipse will pass over parts of roughly a dozen U.S. states as it moves from Texas to Maine on the afternoon of April 8.  Millions of people are expected to travel  to see it, which will also attract scientists from across the country  to study its unique effects  on the Earth  and its atmosphere .

Hundreds of cities in  13 states are on the path of totality  for this year's total solar eclipse, which for those in the United States, will begin in Eagle Pass, Texas and end in Lee, Maine.
