14. Just Deserts

Game Indonesia keren bertemakan simulasi kencan virtual ini akan menjadikan para pemainnya sebagai prajurit bayaran yang ditempatkan di pangkalan militer berdekatan dengan kota Aquarine. Dalam game tersebut, manusia sedang berperang melawan alien dan diambang kekalahan karena alien mampu membuat manusia yang mendekatinya tak sadarkan diri. Namun, berkat hasil rekayasa genetika, hanya kalianlah satu – satunya manusia yang kebal akan efek tersebut.

Nah, dalam peperangan ini, para pemain nantinya akan ditemani lima wanita cantik dengan spesialis di bidang masing – masing.

15. Code Atma

Game lokal satu ini digarap oleh Agate dengan basis idle-horror RPG . Terinspirasi dari sejarah mitologi budaya Indonesia, seluruh makhluk halus dalam game disebut dengan Atma , di mana itu adalah fantasi dan hasrat manusia mengenai makhluk tersebut. Walaupun kasat mata, nyatanya beberapa manusia mampu berkomunikasi dengan mereka melalui aplikasi smartphone bernama Code Atma.

Tiap Atma dalam game mempunyai latar belakang misterius, dan tugasmu yang nantinya berperan sebagai Kasna akan mencari tahu semuanya di game Code Atma ini.

16. Legrand Legacy: Tale of the Fatebounds

Game Indonesia terbaik satu ini wajib sekali kamu mainkan, brott. Dalam game ini, para pemain akan menjadi seorang budak kehilangan ingatan bernama Finn yang ditolong seorang pak tua dan mengajaknya bertualang demi menyembuhkan putrinya. Di situ ia akan bertemu ragam karakter baru dan terbentuk menjadi sebuah kelompok bernama Fatebounds. Berbasiskan ARPG, kalian akan dihadapkan dengan bermacam monster dengan kemampuan berbeda – beda.

17. Celestian Tales: Old North

Masih dengan RPG, Ekuator Games merilis game lokal berjudul Celestian Tales: Old North . Game ini kental dengan unsur politik seperti seri Suikoden, Dragon Age, atau Game of Thrones. Ada enam karakter protagonis berbeda dengan tujuan yang sama, yaitu menjadi seorang squire (bangsawan yang jadi ajudan kesatria dengan tujuan latihan). Keputusan mereka inilah yang nantinya akan mempertemukan keenam karakter tersebut di dalam cerita.

18. Fallen Legion: Rise to Glory

Game ini merupakan game RPG lokal pertama yang diangkat ke platform PS4. Berkisah tentang Cecille, putri kerajaan Fenumia yang dulunya sejahtera. Ketika sang raja wafat, Cecille menjadi pengganti memimpin kerajaan tersebut. Berbagai harta waris di dapatkannya, namun mata Cecille tertuju ke sebuah buku yang dapat berbicara, memiliki pengetahuan dalam dan mampu memberi kehidupan pada senjata. Bersama buku itu, Cecille berpetualang demi membangkitkan kejayaan kerajaan Fenumia.

Suka dengan game bertema lucu dan menggemaskan? Cute Munchies adalah jawabannya! Game Indonesia terbaik besutan Niji Games ini mempunyai mekanisme mirip dengan Candy Crush, hanya saja para pemain bertugas membantu para hewan imut mencari makan dengan menggeser karakternya ke arah makanan tersebut.

20. The Sun Shines Over Us

Game Indonesia keren satu ini menjadi pusat perhatian kalangan gamer ketika baru dirilis. Pasalnya, game ini rilis pada hari kesehatan mental dunia dan mengangkat kasus bullying di sekolah. Bercerita tentang Mentari yang mengalami trauma karena pernah dibully. Ketika pindah ke sekolah baru, ia bertemu dengan berbagai siswa yang memiliki masalah berbeda – beda, seperti anak yang stress karena broken home bahkan ada juga terkena eating disorder (gangguan pola makan).

21. Nusakana

Nusakana adalah game JRPG open-world yang digarap oleh Studio Namaapa. Game lokal satu ini bercerita tentang dunia pasca perang di mana bagian bumi utara berlomba mencari tanah dan sumber daya alam baru untuk bangun negara baru. Di bumi selatan, terdapat sebuah pulau bernama Nusakana yang kaya Mana, sumber daya paling berharga sedunia. Karena kandungan Mana-nya besar, banyak perwakilan negara yang singgah ke pulau tersebut, termasuk pemain yang berperan jadi karakter protagonis untuk tujuan wisata.

22. Battle of Satria Dewa

2023 Is Off To A Very Strong Start With This Indonesian-Made Indie Adventure Odyssey

It’s rare to see a January video game title at the start of a year to captivate and entice my jaded palette, much less one made by a small studio that took 7 years and even went through some publisher kerfuffle last year . Yet here we are: Mojiken Studios’ A Space For The Unbound is finally out. And believe me when I say that it is a helluva treat for adventure fans looking for a mix of serene and nostalgia-inducing gaming with a good dose of tension and drama in-between.

Shining Star

In A Space For The Unbound, you control a teenager named Atma living his life in 90s rural Indonesia together with his girlfriend Raya. The game starts off with a dream sequence, followed by Atma and his beau planning a bucket list as the school year is ending for them. But like any enchanting video game story with a manic pixie dream girl, not everything is what it seems, as Raya somehow has magic powers and there are talking cats. And that is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

What’s ideal and unique about the setting -90s Indonesia town- is that it really captures everything about the country and its culture. If you’re not aware of the Southeast Asia country, A Space For The Unbound gives you a crash course in the culture and how life was back then, with the tuckshops and roadside stalls, to even the idyllic view of the riverside and streets. Internet cafes and arcades are also present, reminding us that the developers’ love for gaming and its nation’s halcyon era is apparent and out in full force, represented diligently with each pixel in tow on your screen. And they’re indeed beautiful to witness and watch in motion.

Throughout the game’s 10-hour or so runtime, you’ll experience a lot of hard-hitting themes that hit close to home like trauma, depression, and bullying, all hidden within its layer of a slice-of-life setting, 90s period trapping, and “magic cosmic space stuff” featuring a magic book that lets you dive into people’s minds and fix them from within. There are many twists and turns here that unfold methodically; mentioning anything here beyond this is crossing spoiler territory.

I will say that the game’s narrative handles its subject matter with skill, grace, authenticity, and heart. Which is more than I can say for bigger game studios with an unlimited budget & time frame.

No School Like The Old School

But what of the gameplay, you may ask? It does its job well; you control Atma with the controller (or keyboard), making him walk left and right, checking out items and observing surroundings as an adventure game protagonist would.

You’ll come across a bunch of puzzles to solve, some fetch questing, and a number of quick-time events. Remember that red magic book I mentioned? That’s the crux of Atma’s skill: he can dive into people’s minds and fix problems from within. In fact, you can somehow find objects in those mind palaces and use them in outside situations and puzzles within the same environment. It’s pretty unique and its whole purpose and storyline context are explained well as the story progresses.

The latter bit about QTEs really highlights Mojiken Studios’ love for a particular Capcom game where fights take place in the streets. Heck, there’s even a nod to Capcom’s courtroom drama game in a later chapter involving evidence-presenting to debunk character statements.

The brain-teasers themselves are tricky, but definitely solvable with a bit of know-how and paying attention to the surroundings and area you’re in. The solutions are within the vicinity and it’s up to you to discover and put them together. There’s even a late-game math puzzle that will stump you for a bit, but makes sense as you check the surroundings you’re in.

A Space For The Unbound mixes both these gameplay elements really well while also making you feel chill and pressure-less with its challenges and tests. Though I could do without some of the tedious backtracking for items.

Simply put: this Indonesian indie title is one for the ages (for 2023 anyway), despite that one problem which is honestly a genre issue.

Hats off to the humble team at Mojiken Studios for finally releasing a huge passion project that puts a lot of big-budget narrative-driven video games to shame. It tells a compelling and relatable plot while introducing a new type of setting unheard of in most games of this genre; one that’s proud about its heritage and culture.

You don’t just play A Space For The Unbound; you live, feel, and experience it, plain and simple. And you’ll be all the happier doing so.

• Great story about high school mixed in with the mystical.
• You learn a lot about 90s Indonesia & SEA culture.
• Lovely mix of adventure gameplay with clever puzzles & fun minigames.
• Some backtracking tedium in the mid-game.

Kamu akan dihadapkan dengan perjalanan pribadi Putri Cecille dan grimoire yang dapat berbicara untuk mengembalikan kesejahteraan dan kejayaan dari Sins of an Empire. We Played These Traditional Games in Indonesia

Today is Children’s Day in Indonesia, which falls on July 23rd. How was your own childhood? Ours was filled with joy and excitement as we indulged in a plethora of traditional games unique to Indonesia.

However, it’s disheartening to observe that children in modern-day Indonesia no longer hold an interest in these timeless pastimes. Instead, they gravitate towards electronic games available on consoles, PCs, gadgets, and websites. These technologically advanced games have overshadowed the captivating toys and entertainment we once cherished.

In the past, our society fostered a sense of camaraderie and an active lifestyle. The toys we enjoyed were simple, affordable, yet incredibly entertaining. I vividly recall the thrill of receiving a handmade wooden AK-47 and sword from my father. With these weapons in hand, a group of four or five friends would embark on epic battles.

Additionally, there were numerous non-military games that defined our childhood, but sadly, they have fallen into obscurity in this current generation. Let’s take a moment to remember and appreciate some of these forgotten traditional games…

Balap Karung (Gunnysack Race) Traditional Game

One of the simplest yet exhilarating traditional games is “Balap Karung,” which involves placing your feet inside a gunnysack and jumping or walking quickly towards the finish line. Typically, Balap Karung is organized as part of the celebrations for Indonesian Independence Day.

This game is incredibly enjoyable, especially when each player has enthusiastic supporters cheering them on.

If played as a team game, once a player reaches the finish line, their teammate takes over and continues the race. As with any race, the winner is determined by the fastest time. To enhance the entertainment value, the competition seeks to identify the most skilled participants, who then face off in the grand final.

Victory in Balap Karung hinges on a combination of speed and balance. It’s important to maintain control and avoid stumbling over the sack. However, even if you do stumble occasionally, it adds an element of amusement for the spectators.

Bekel Traditional Game

The game begins with all the jacks, known as “biji bekel” (jacks), held in the player’s hand. The player drops them while the ball bounces once. Then, the player starts picking up the jacks one by one without disturbing any of the others.

Afterward, the player throws the ball again and picks up another jack. This process continues until all the jacks are collected. In the next step, the player repeats the game by picking up two jacks at a time. Once the second set is finished, the player moves on to the third set, where she must pick up three jacks at a time.

Finally, in one swift motion, the player must gather all the jacks with a single sweep of the hand.

However, the game isn’t over yet. The player drops all the jacks again and begins with the “roh,” which is the upper part of the jack. The player’s goal is to turn over all the jacks so that the “roh” side is facing up. Once this set is completed, the player proceeds to the next set, where she must turn the jacks so they are facing downward.

The winner of the bekel game is the player who completes all the sets flawlessly and in the shortest time possible.

Bentengan (Fortress) Traditional Game

Bentengan is an exhilarating game played between two teams, with each team consisting of 3-7 players. Each team has its own “fortress” ( benteng ), which can be a tree, pole, pillar, or wall. The primary objective is to attack and seize the opponent’s fortress by touching it and declaring, “Benteng!”

A team can also achieve victory by capturing all of the opposing team’s players through physical contact when they are outside their fortress. However, there’s a twist. If you and your opponent touch each other simultaneously, a hostage situation arises.

Here’s the key: your fortress serves as a source of power. Pay close attention to the timing of your last contact with your fortress. For example, if you touched your fortress 60 seconds ago, while your opponent touched theirs only 30 seconds ago, it indicates that they have more power.

In this case, if you touch each other, you would become the hostage according to the game’s rules. You will be required to stand near their fortress as a prisoner.

But fear not, your team can also set you free by touching you. However, since it’s enemy territory, this mission can be perilous for your teammates. Bentengan resembles a special forces game indeed, where your chances of winning depend on your opponents’ running skills , teamwork, strategy, tactics, and the ability to provoke your team to leave the safety of the fortress. That’s precisely why Bentengan was my favorite traditional game during my childhood.

Dakon / Congklak Traditional Game

Dakon is a captivating game. It is played on a board with circular indentations along both sides. There is a home indentation on each end of the board. The game starts when the two players pick the biji bekel (jacks) from the right end hole. They fill other holes one by one until they reach each other’s “mother” (a big hole on the left side of the board).

Once they reach the “mother,” the player is free to pick a hole and fill other holes. However, there are a few rules to remember. The player’s hand must move to the left, and they must fill the “mother” every time they play. If a player runs out of biji bekel and the last one drops on the hole on the other player’s side, it means they lose.

To play again, the player must wait until the other player loses. The same case applies when the player drops the last biji bekel on their side. If there are no biji bekel in front of the hole where the last biji bekel was dropped, they have to wait. However, if the last biji bekel drops in the “mother,” they can continue the game.

What if the last biji bekel is dropped on our side and there are biji bekel in front of the hole? It means we have a “shot.” In this situation, we can pick up our last biji bekel and the one in the hole we “shot.” Then, we put them all in our “mother.”

The winner is determined by counting the number of biji bekel in their “mother.” There’s no need to count them one by one. Simply refill the holes and compare the number of biji bekel . The player with more biji bekel in their “mother” is the winner.

Egrang (Stilt) Traditional Game

The origin of Egrang remains uncertain, even though similar tools can be found in Europe serving other purposes. However, people in different regions of Indonesia recognize Egrang by various names.

In West Sumatra, it is known as “tengkak-tengkak” (cripple), while in Bengkulu, it is called “ingkau” (bamboo shoes). Central Java refers to it as “jangkungan” (a branch of wood for birds to lean on), and in South Borneo, it is known as “batungkau.” The term “egrang” itself originates from the Lampung language, where it describes a clog made from bamboo.

Egrang is crafted using approximately 2.5 meters of bamboo. A platform is placed around 50 cm from the bottom, providing a foothold for the user. In Indonesia , Egrang serves not only as a means to gain a higher vantage point but also as a tool for exhilarating racing competitions.

Participants engage in spirited back-and-forth races on stilts. To emerge victorious in this game, one must swiftly step forward while maintaining a steady balance.

Engkle / Damprak / Teklek Ciplak Gunung (Hopscotch)

Engkle is a simple game that can be found in various Indonesian regions, including Sumatra, Java, Bali, Borneo, and Sulawesi. The game involves jumping on one leg from one square to another, which are drawn on the ground. Each player is equipped with a kereweng or gaco , typically a broken tile, ceramic floor, or flat stone.

The gaco is initially thrown onto one square, and then the player proceeds to hop on one leg from square to square. If a square allows it, the player can briefly step with both legs while the other players are prohibited from stepping on that particular square during the game. The winner is determined by the participant who occupies the most squares, referred to as “fields.”

Gobak Sodor / Galah Asin / Galasin

In France, Gobak Sodor is similar to the game Passé Murail. It involves two teams, each consisting of 3-5 players. The objective is for one team to successfully pass the final “wall,” which is represented by a line. The opponent’s players guard each line, and the team aiming to pass the wall wins when all their members have crossed the last line.

The opposing team’s mission is to prevent the other team from penetrating their territory by either catching them or simply touching them, without stepping off the line themselves.

Gobak Sodor, possibly derived from the English phrase “go back to the door,” can be played within a 9 x 4 meters square. It is commonly played on a badminton or volleyball court, but lines can also be drawn on the ground.

Winning this game requires physical speed to penetrate the opponent’s defense. It also demands body flexibility and quick reflexes to avoid being touched. Additionally, effective teamwork is crucial in creating distractions that provide opportunities for teammates to pass the wall.

Gasing / Gangsing Traditional Game

Gasing is a fascinating toy consisting of a tube with a bottom stick and top stick made of bamboo. It features a small side hole that produces a resonant whistle when the Gasing spins, with the pitch determined by the size of the hole.

To play the game, begin by winding a length of thin rope around the top stick. Grasp the end of the rope and pull it, causing the Gasing to spin on its bottom stick while emitting a melodic “whirrrr….” sound.

Next, engage in battles between Gasings. Typically, a circle with a diameter of 50 cm is drawn on the ground. The Gasings are set in motion to initiate the contest. The objective is to knock your opponent’s Gasing out of the circle. If the Gasings do not make contact, the winner is the player whose Gasing remains standing last.

Kelereng / Gundu (Marble) Traditional Game

There are many variations of the Kelereng game, and one of them is called Kalangan (The Circle). To begin, a small circle is drawn on the ground, and each player places one of their Kelereng (marbles) inside the circle. Then, each player throws another marble to a point outside the drawn circle.

The player whose kelereng is the furthest from the circle gets to play first. They use their marbel from its last position to strike the pooled marbles, aiming to make them spread outside the circle. The player’s marble must also end up outside of the circle. If they succeed, they can claim ownership of all those marbles.

The player can then continue to strike their opponents’ marble in an attempt to acquire those marbles as well. However, if the player fails to strike all of the marbles or if their own marble becomes trapped within the circle, it becomes the second furthest player’s turn. The strategy in this game is similar to billiards, involving good shooting skills and prioritizing targets.

Patil Lele / Gatrik / Tak Kadal Traditional Game

To play this game, prepare two wooden sticks, one approximately 30 cm long and the other around 15 cm long. The players are divided into two groups. The first player from the first team takes their turn.

Hold the longer stick like a sword, while placing the shorter stick between two stones. Use the longer stick to pry up the shorter stick. Once the shorter stick is floating in the air, hit it with the longer stick, aiming to fling it as far as possible.

Your opponent will measure the distance from the point where the stick falls to your hitting area, using the stick itself rather than a tape measure. This distance determines your score. Let’s say it is 100.

If after prying up the short stick, you manage to hit it twice (juggle) before the final strike, your score will be doubled (200). If you successfully juggle it three times before it goes away, you’ll earn 3 x 100, totaling 300 points.

However, if you fail to hit the short stick away, you get zero point. The same applies if your short stick is caught by an opponent player. Your turn ends, and it becomes your friend’s turn. After all the players in your team have taken a turn, it is the opponent team’s chance to play. The team with the higher score emerges as the winner.

Petak Umpet (Hide and Seek)

Petak Umpet is a popular game that might be unfamiliar to some. It is similar to the hide-and-seek games played in many countries. The game requires at least two players. A chosen player is must close his/her eyes while facing a wall or a tree, serving as the base. The other players use this opportunity to hide while s/he counts to 10 or 20.

After counting, the chosen one tries to find all the hidden players. The game concludes when s/he discovers all the players and exclaims, “Skit!”, “Inglo!”, “Bon!”, or “Hong!” However, if any player manages to touch the base without being noticed by the chosen, all the players who were discovered are freed, and s/he must start over again.

The player who is found last becomes the winner, and the first player (unless freed) becomes the next chosen one.

Lompat Tali (Jumping Rope) Traditional Game

This is an immensely popular game among elementary school pupils during recess. The girls use a rope made from hundreds of elastic bands that are looped together. Two girls hold the rope at each end while the others take turns jumping over it.

Initially, the rope is set at ankle level. As the jumpers successfully clear the rope, the height is gradually raised. Skilled players can even jump over ropes set at neck level!

However, if a player fails, there’s no need to worry. Rubber ropes provide an advantage as they won’t cause any harm. Nevertheless, becoming the best jumper requires both bravery and a substantial amount of practice.

Well, those are the traditional games in Indonesia that I can recall. They represent a glimpse into the diverse array of games that have been cherished by generations and continue to bring joy to communities across the country. From the exciting game of Gobak Sodor to the skillful art of spinning bamboo Gasing, these games showcase the cultural richness and spirit of play in Indonesia.

If my memory serves me with more unique games, I will be sure to share them. The world of traditional Indonesian games is vast and captivating, deserving of celebration and preservation for future generations to enjoy.

Hi – I’m looking for information about a game I played in Indonesia that was called upin-ipin. Two players put thin wooden sticks on the floor and hit the floor near them, sending the sticks jumping. You try and make your stick jump on top of the other player’s stick. I’m looking for any and all info about the game – where to find the sticks (are they the same as wide popsicle sticks?), the rules, special techniques for getting the sticks to jump, etc. I tried it at home with my kids and couldn’t get the sticks to jump! Hi, Anne. As far I know, Indonesia don’t have any game called Upin-Ipin. FYI, Upin and Ipin is a fictitious characters of Malaysian animation.

Indonesia Has Potential to Be King of Gaming Industry Driven by eSports: Google

TEMPO.CO , Singapore - Indonesia has the largest gaming market in Southeast Asia, which is supported by the reasonably massive development of eSports and mobile gaming.

“Indonesia has the potential to become the king of the gaming industry in Southeast Asia, especially since the government supports eSports development,” said Sami Kizilbash, Google's global head of accelerators and experts, during a graduation day ceremony of the ″Indie Games Accelerator 2022″ held in Google Asia HQ, Singapore, on Tuesday, 13 December 2022.

Indie Games Accelerator is a three-month training program for independent game developers from around the world.

The progress of Indonesia's eSports, said Sami, makes Indonesia's position quite unique compared to other countries in Southeast Asia and Asia as a whole. “Indonesia is now the fifth largest gaming market in Asia. The first is China, followed by Japan, South Korea, and India.”

Not just being the market, Indonesia also has the opportunity to be a key player in the gaming industry with a large number of gaming studios, both large-scale and independent ones.

Google records that Google Play is home to more than 10,000 Indonesian developers, and over 150 million Indonesians visit Google Play every month, searching for apps and games.

“Google Play allows both big and small developers from all over Indonesia to develop on our platform. We have seen many successful Indonesian developers in a very competitive global market,” said Kunal Soni, Director of Google Play for Southeast Asia and Australia.

“We are committed to supporting developers to keep building businesses, games, and applications that can connect more than 2.5 billion users on this platform,” Kunal said.

Based on the eConomySEA 2022 report, Indonesia’s online media which includes on-demand video, music, games, and digital advertising was projected to reach US$6.4 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) by 2022 and US$11 billion in GMV by 2025, with a 19 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2022 and 2025.

According to this report, 34 percent of Indonesians play games at least once a week, and 13 percent of them spend more than one hour per day playing games. Meanwhile, the  revenue of the global gaming industry was forecasted to reach nearly US$340 billion by 2027, with most of the growth expected to come from Asia.

Doha, Qatar: Hosts Qatar are set to take on debutants Indonesia at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium for the second game in the opening day of the AFC U23 Asian Cup.

Both teams hope to do big things in the tournament, with the Qatar U23 Portuguese coach Ilidio Vale stating that the goal of the tournament was qualifying to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The U23 side, as per Vale, has been tremendously energized by the senior Qatari national teams’ successful title defense in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, in which the host country defeated Jordan 3-1 in the final to retain the most coveted Asian silverware. 

Indonesia’s U23 Korean coach Shin Tae-yong has acknowledged that his team’s campaign will not be easy with Qatar, Jordan, and Australia being the other teams in the group.

The Korean coach stated however that his side aims to “leave a mark” in their first ever AFC U23 tournament appearance.

Pope will travel to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore in longest trip of papacy

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis will visit Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea and Singapore in September, the Vatican announced Friday, confirming the longest trip of Francis’ papacy that is sure to test his health, stamina and mobility.

The Vatican confirmed the Sept. 2-13 visit, saying the 87-year-old pope would visit Jakarta, Indonesia; Port Moresby and Vanimo, Papua New Guinea; Dili, East Timor; and Singapore. Further details will be announced later.

Francis’ health has become a source of increasing concern and speculation, even though the pontiff is able to carry on with a rigorous schedule of meetings at the Vatican and even excursions to local parishes.

Francis, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, had to cancel a planned visit to Dubai late last year after he came down with a bad case of bronchitis. He suffered from respiratory problems all winter and had to curtail his participation in Holy Week events to save his energy for Easter.

Francis has also been using a wheelchair for nearly two years because of bad knee ligaments, and has said that traveling has become increasingly more difficult.

And yet at 11 days, the trip would be the longest of Francis’ papacy, outpacing by a few days some of his long trips to the Americas early on in his 11-year papacy. It will bring the Argentine Jesuit to the world’s most populous Muslim nation, Indonesia, as well as the former Portuguese colony of East Timor, where the Catholic Church wields enormous influence.

There is also a chance of another leg to the trip being added later: This week, the Vatican foreign minister, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, was in Vietnam and discussed a papal visit, Vatican News reported, without providing details.

In a statement announcing the visit, the Indonesian foreign ministry welcomed the visit and recalled that it had originally been scheduled for 2020 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The visit of Pope Francis to Indonesia holds significant importance to the Indonesian people, not only for Catholics but also for all religious communities. The visit is also expected to strengthen the message of tolerance, unity and world peace,” the statement said.

Indonesia is home to roughly 242 million Muslims and 29 million Christians — 8.5 million of whom are Catholics — according to a 2022 report by the Religious Affairs Ministry.

East Timor, which today has a population of about 1.2 million people, is Southeast Asia’s only predominantly Christian nation with the exception of the Philippines. According to the 2015 census, 97.6% of East Timor’s population is Catholic.

The visit to East Timor will likely reignite attention over a clergy sex abuse scandal involving its revered independence hero and Nobel Peace Prize winner. The Vatican confirmed in 2022 that it had sanctioned Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo following allegations that he sexually abused boys there during the 1990s. Belo is believed to now be living in Portugal.

Francis will be the first pope to visit Papua New Guinea since St. John Paul II went there in 1984. The country, in a strategically important part of the South Pacific, has struggled with tribal violence and civil unrest.

John Paul also visited Singapore, in 1986. The country today is home to 395,000 Catholics and Francis in 2022 made its archbishop Singapore’s first cardinal.

In a statement welcoming the visit, Cardinal William Goh, said it “will bring renewed fervor to all Catholics in Singapore, uniting them in faith and mission, especially in these most challenging of times.”

The Vatican has planned only one other papal trip this year — to Belgium to celebrate the anniversary of the country’s Catholic university. Francis has also said he wants to return to his native Argentina , but no plans or dates have been announced.

Southeast Asia needs to step up its counterterrorism game

Terror networks like islamic state continue to inspire local groups to attack.

Southeast Asia is characterized by diverse cultures, ethnicities and levels of economic growth, but its countries face a common and persistent challenge: terrorism.

Effective counterterrorism efforts require a multipronged approach that combines robust security measures, addresses the root causes of radicalization, fosters regional cooperation and tackles the spread of extremist ideologies online.

Since losing control of swathes of territory in the Middle East, the influence of international terrorist organizations like the Islamic State and al-Qaeda has waned in Southeast Asia. Instead, these groups have shifted toward more decentralized structures and localized strategies, exploiting community grievances and focusing on radicalizing individuals.

In this sense, they still retain a degree of influence in inspiring and facilitating attacks perpetrated by local affiliated organizations as well as lone actors. For example, Islamic State-inspired groups carried out bombings in Jakarta in January 2016 and in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city, in May 2018.

Extremist organizations continue to use online platforms to spread propaganda, and for recruitment and communication purposes. They use encrypted messaging apps to evade detection by law enforcement and exploit social media platforms’ algorithms, creating content that targets vulnerable individuals' grievances and potentially leads people down rabbit holes of radicalizing content. In some horrific instances, extremist groups have even live-streamed attacks, aiming to spread terror and inspire copycat attacks.

Countries in Southeast Asia have implemented a range of counterterrorism policies, each with their strengths and challenges. However, despite some successes in weakening specific militant groups or deterring major attacks, the effectiveness of such policies remains a subject of debate.

Indonesia, for example, has focused on deradicalization programs, community engagement and strengthening law enforcement capabilities. While these efforts have yielded some success in disrupting terrorist networks and preventing assaults, challenges persist in addressing the underlying social and economic factors that contribute to radicalization.

A combination of security measures, deradicalization programs and community engagement initiatives characterizes Malaysia’s multipronged policy. Yet the country continues to grapple with complex political dynamics, including tensions between different ethnic and religious groups, and concerns about the effectiveness of deradicalization efforts in countering extremism.

One significant challenge across the region lies in a limited focus on addressing the root causes of extremism, as well as promoting community resilience and safeguarding human rights. Many policies predominantly emphasize security measures, often overlooking the underlying social, economic and political factors that contribute to radicalization.

For example, Singapore has adopted a hard-line approach, prioritizing robust security measures, intelligence gathering and strict legislation — actions that have been effective in deterring major attacks and maintaining security. In the Philippines, the primary focus has been on military operations against armed militant organizations, particularly in the south, which have succeeded in weakening some groups. Thailand combats terrorism through a combination of security measures, intelligence gathering, as well as limited community engagement initiatives.

Some have expressed concerns about Singapore's difficulty in balancing security measures with the protection of civil liberties, the Philippines' focus on countering extremism without sufficiently addressing its underlying causes and the potential for unintended human rights violations in Thailand's response to insurgencies in the country's south.

In all cases, the risk of security-focused interventions exacerbating grievances among local communities impacted by violence and/or marginalization also remains an issue.

Overall, as is evident from the above, while each country has made efforts to address the threat of terrorism, ongoing challenges remain in balancing security concerns with respect for human rights and fostering societies equipped to resist extremist ideologies.

Additionally, even where deradicalization programs are implemented, their effectiveness varies. Concerns persist about their long-term sustainability and ability to address the complex ideological underpinnings of extremism.

To address root causes, investments in education, poverty alleviation and promoting social justice can help mitigate grievances and foster inclusive societies, therefore reducing individuals’ susceptibility to radicalization.

Secondly, enhancing regional cooperation among governments, law enforcement agencies and intelligence services is crucial for information sharing, conducting joint operations and capacity building to combat transnational networks.

These efforts must be complemented by robust online interventions that counter narratives targeting vulnerable populations and challenge terrorist propaganda, therefore disrupting recruitment and radicalization pathways.

Promoting community engagement and resilience through grassroots initiatives, religious institutions and civil society organizations also plays a key role in empowering communities to, ultimately, reject extremism before it takes root. Olympic flame for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 lit in symbolic ceremony in Ancient Olympia 

On the eve of 100 days to go, the flame for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 has been lit. It was ignited at the historic birthplace of the Olympic Games in Ancient Olympia in Greece. The Olympic flame, embodying peace and hope, will now journey across Greece before coming to France. After arriving in Marseille on 8 May, it will travel across the entire country, and some French overseas territories, arriving at the Opening Ceremony in Paris on 26 July.

Amongst the dignitaries attending this historic event today were International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach , President of the Hellenic Republic, Her Excellency Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, Paris 2024 Organising Committee President, Tony Estanguet, President of the French National Olympic Committee and IOC Member, David Lappartient , the IOC Members in France, Guy Drut and Jean-Christophe Rolland, the French Minister of Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, the Chair of the IOC’s Paris 2024 Coordination Commission, Pierre-Olivier Beckers Vieujant and the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo.

The ceremony was hosted by the Hellenic Olympic Committee President and IOC member Spyros Capralos .

In his speech , in front of thousands of people, President Bach highlighted Paris 2024’s dedication to upholding the Olympic values and fostering global unity.

The Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. The Olympic athletes send this powerful message: yes, it is possible to compete fiercely against each other and at the same time live peacefully together under one roof. The athletes will shine and show us what greatness humans are capable of with all their excellence, determination and resilience.

He continued: “This power of sport will make the Olympic Games Paris 2024 a great symbol of human excellence and unity of all humankind in all our diversity. These expectations are shared by billions of people around the world. In these difficult times we are living through, with wars and conflicts on the rise, people are fed up with all the hate, the aggression and negative news they are facing day in and day out. In their hearts – in all our hearts – we are longing for something which brings us together. We are longing for something that is unifying. We are longing for something that gives us hope.”

President Bach also spoke of the unified commitment to the success of Paris 2024, praising the innovative spirit of the Organising Committee, expressing confidence in France’s preparations and acknowledging the growing anticipation ahead of this summer’s Games.

He said: “This Olympic flame will carry this Olympic spirit from here, our ancient roots, through all of France and finally to Paris – making the City of Light shine even brighter. The Olympic flame will shine over the first Olympic Games inspired by our Olympic Agenda reforms from start to finish. These Olympic Games will be younger, more inclusive, more urban, more sustainable. These will be the very first Olympic Games with full gender parity, because the IOC allocated exactly 50 per cent of the places to female and male athletes.”

The ceremony also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the work being done by Paris 2024, together with stakeholders from the sporting, political and social sectors in France, in realising an important objective of Olympic Agenda 2020 : creating a legacy well before the Olympic competitions have even started. Paris 2024’s concept of delivering “ Games Wide Open ” has engaged millions of people already by promoting physical activity, education, inclusion, equality and sustainability.

Paris 2024 Organising Committee President Tony Estanguet also spoke at the ceremony, sharing the collective anticipation of the host nation. He said: “France is ready to welcome the Olympic Games, a hundred years after the last summer edition on our soil. It is with great pride and honour that we will be hosting the Olympic Games in the country of their founder, Pierre de Coubertin, where we keep a very strong and special link with Olympism. After the first participation of women in the Games at Paris 1900 and the creation of the first Athletes' Village for Paris 1924, we are ready to write a new chapter in the great Olympic history with the third Games in Paris, France. We want to thank the IOC and Thomas Bach for the enduring help and support, all these years, which have allowed us to conceive and create Games that are not only spectacular, but also more responsible, notably from an environmental point of view, which will make them all the more exceptional. Together, we will organise great Games, and it starts today, with the Olympic Torch Relay!”

The lighting ceremony, held at the Temple of Hera, paid homage to the Olympic Games' Greek heritage, reinforcing the profound link between ancient traditions and the modern Games. The flame was kindled by the high priestess and, along with an olive branch symbolising peace, was passed to the first torchbearer.

This honour was given to Greek rower, Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist Stefanos Douskos , who then passed it on to Laure Manaudou , the first French torchbearer on Greek soil and an Olympic champion at Athens 2004. The flame will now travel onwards, first embarking upon an 11-day journey across Greece , during which the flame will be carried over 5,000 kilometres, through 43 municipalities.

The Olympic flame will then be passed on to the Paris 2024 Organising Committee at an official handover ceremony in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens before it boards the historic French three-masted ship, Belem . It’s voyage across the Mediterranean will then begin, a journey reflecting the enduring friendship between Greece and France, arriving in the port of Marseille on 8 May , marking the beginning of celebratory festivities in the host nation.

Around 10,000 torchbearers will then carry the Olympic flame over the following 69 days. The route will take them through around 400 cities, across 65 regions in France, and includes visits to six overseas territories (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, French Polynesia, Réunion and New Caledonia).
