What is download speed.

Download speed measures how fast information can transfer to you. It affects things like how long it takes to download large files, update games, or show pages with lots of photos. Download speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps). One gigabit is 1000 Mbps, two gigabits is 2000 Mbps.

What is upload speed?

Upload speed measures how fast information can transfer from you. It affects things like how you appear on video calls, how fast you can upload files to the cloud, and how long it takes to add attachments to emails. Upload speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps).

What should my internet speed be?

When you get 1 or 2 Gig internet, your internet speeds have the capability of 1000-2000 Mbps. How fast you go depends on how you’re connected to the internet. For instance, Wi-Fi is slower than a direct connection via Ethernet. Additionally, your device, ethernet adapter, or Wi-Fi card may have a lower maximum speed than your router or internet connection.

What is ping?

Ping measures how quickly your device gets a response from a server. A low ping score is better, especially in applications where timing is everything – like online gaming or livestreaming. Ping is measured in milliseconds (ms).

What is jitter?

Jitter measures the fluctuations in the speeds at which a stream of data is sent. A high jitter score can affect streaming and video calls, making them look and sound choppy or glitchy. Jitter is measured in milliseconds (ms).

What is an IP address?

An IP address is the series of numbers that identifies your personal network to the outside world. Just like packages you order are sent to your home address, data you request is sent to your IP address. Just like your home address, phone number, or license plate number, this information is sensitive and shouldn’t be shared publicly.

How to check your internet speed from Google’s homepage and other sites

There are a lot of great ways to check and test your internet speeds. Maybe you’re trying to figure out your internet connection’s download and upload speeds to ensure your network is working correctly, or perhaps you just want to show your friends how fast your internet is for some reason. One great way to check your speeds, if you want, is to use  Google . Of course, there are other options too. Here’s how.

Before you can check your internet speed, you need to make sure that you’re actually connected to an active network. Locate your desired SSID (assuming you’re using a wireless connection, which you probably are), sign in, and make sure there is a secure connection. You can head on over to Google.com to double check that your internet connection is working.

Now that you’re already on Google’s homepage , simply search for “speed test.” Of course, there’ll be search results for online options to check your speed like Speedtest by Ookla, but above that will be Google’s own speed test offering.

To check your internet speed, click on  Run Speed Test . In real-time, you can watch the web applet check your ping, download, and upload speeds. After the test is completed, you can see the results, the server location that was used in the speed test, a bit of information about your network’s speed including what you should be able to do (like stream HD videos), and the ability to rerun the test.

Note: According to several readers from outside of the United States, this feature might not be available in all regions. At this time, we know for sure that it doesn’t work in Nicaragua and Portugal.

If you want a couple of extra options for server location and connection number, Ookla Speedtest might be the right choice for you to check your internet speed. Ookla usually has a few server locations available to you, making it easy to choose the closest one or if you feel so inclined, choose a different location.

Simply head to speedtest.ne t . Your settings will be automatically chosen based on your location when opening the website. Go ahead and click the big GO button . Ookla will connect you to the server and immediately start measuring your internet speed.

When finished, your results will be displayed at the top of the screen. Ookla also shows a graph of your internet connection as the test makes its rounds. This gives you an easy way to visualize your speed as necessary.

It may come as a shock that Netflix powers an internet speed test website called Fast. Simply head over to fast.com . Fast is ad-free and as simple as you can get. As soon as you open the website, your speed is immediately calculated will a small pause button appearing to the right if you wish to stop it.

You can click “Show me more info” to check out your upload speed, server location, and settings. Though, that defeats the purpose of the website, which is to keep things easy.

All of these are great options for users, with each having its own pros. Google’s speed test is probably the easiest one to get to and complete. Ookla’s Speedtest comes in as a close second since it has a few tweakable options for anyone to mess around with.

What is FAST.com measuring? FAST.com speed test gives you an estimate of your current Internet speed. You will generally be able to get this speed from leading Internet services, which use globally distributed servers.

Why does FAST.com focus primarily on download speed? Download speed is most relevant for people who are consuming content on the Internet, and we want FAST.com to be a very simple and fast speed test.

What about ping, latency, upload and other things? When you click the “Show more info” button, you can see your upload speed and connection latency (ping). FAST.com provides two different latency measurements for your Internet connection: “unloaded” and “loaded” with traffic. The difference between these two measurements is also called “bufferbloat”.

How are the results calculated? To calculate your Internet speed, FAST.com performs a series of downloads from and uploads to Netflix servers and calculates the maximum speed your Internet connection can provide. More details are in our blog post .

Use Google Maps to see how fast you're driving

The speedometer feature is available on Android phones.

Sometimes that lead foot of yours can get you into trouble. When you're cruising down the highway, you may not think to check if you're going over the speed limit. Fortunately, if you use  Google Maps while you drive, you can keep an eye on how fast you're going with the speedometer tool built into navigation. Yes, we know your car already has one, but the Google Maps speedometer changes colors when you're going over the speed limit, making it easier to see from your peripherals -- because darting your eyes back and forth between the app and your dashboard is dangerous. 

Google  also has speed limit indicators and speed camera alerts, so make sure you're checking those, too.

Google  rolled out the speedometer in Maps to all Android users -- so if you use Google Maps on your iPhone, you won't see it yet. You can check the Maps app settings to see if you have it. We also tell you how to report a speed camera trap and an incident like a traffic jam.

Turn on the speedometer

1. Open your Google Maps app.

2. Tap on the three stacked lines and scroll down to the bottom of your screen.

3. Select Settings .

4. Tap Navigation Settings .

5. Scroll down to the Driving Options menu and slide the toggle on for Speedometer . If you don't see this option, you probably don't have this new feature yet.

Report a speed camera trap

2. Type in your destination to start navigating -- you can only report the speed cameras if you're in navigation mode.

3. Tap the speech bubble icon with the plus sign.

4. Select Mobile speed camera .

5. A pop-up message will appear that says, "Adding mobile speed camera to the map."

6. If you didn't mean to report anything, you have a few seconds to cancel by tapping the circle that says Undo .

Report an incident, like a car crash or a traffic jam

2. Type in your destination to start navigating -- you can only report incidents if you're in navigation mode.

3. When you're on the road and you see a wreck or a slowdown, tap the speech bubble icon with the plus sign.

4. Tap Add a report .

5. Select crash or  slowdown . A message will appear that says "Adding [crash, slowdown] to the map." You can click Undo if you don't want to send it.

Google Maps can now tell you your speed in real time

Google has quietly added a live speedometer into Google Maps, allowing you to keep an eye on your speed alongside local speed limits . Android Police reports that the feature can be turned on and off from the app’s Navigation Settings menu in Settings, after which it will display in the bottom left corner of the app during a car journey.

The feature is just one of many that have trickled into Google Maps after first appearing in the Waze app, which Google bought way back in 2013 . We’ve already seen speed limits come to the app, as well as incident reporting , which allows you to notify other drivers about crashes, police checkpoints, and speed cameras. Google Maps even adopted the ability to customize your navigation icon .

Reportedly available across countries in Europe and the Americas

The feature doesn’t appear to be available everywhere just yet. Android Police says that users have reported seeing it in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, India, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Taiwan, the UK, and the US. The feature is reportedly not currently available in Android Auto, but is in the Auto app.

On a pre-existing support page , Google advises that its speed limits functionality is provided for “informational purposes only” and given how unreliable GPS can be, it’s probably best to take the same approach with the speedometer. Otherwise you might find yourself inadvertently making Speedy Gonzales look like Regular Gonzales the next time your phone loses signal.

How to run a speed test

You can run a speed test simply by clicking the button on whatever test you’re using. To get the most accurate results, make sure to close out apps and browser windows so you don’t tax your bandwidth with unnecessary traffic. You can even plug your computer directly into your router, gateway, or mesh system via Ethernet.

If you’re running a speed test over Wi-Fi, make sure your device is connected to the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band, and you’re within a few feet of the router or gateway. The 2.4 GHz band is guaranteed to give you a false reading on plans under 200Mbps, so keep that in mind. Routers, gateways, and mesh systems with band steering enabled will likely give you an incorrect reading, too.

Also, internet speeds tend to fluctuate—you’ll never get a single, fixed speed—so it’s best to run multiple tests to get a broader understanding of your internet’s capabilities. You can also run tests at different times throughout the day to see how your download and upload speeds fluctuate around factors like more users and increased traffic.

Obviously we’re biased, but we love our test because it’s easy to use and full of helpful info. Drop-down FAQs give you insights into how the speed test works and how your internet’s performance compares with other users in your same state and with your same internet provider. You can’t choose a test server like you can on Ookla’s test, but if you’re shopping for internet, you can take a look at a detailed list of internet providers serving your area to see what other plans and speeds are available. We also have an app that gives you a simplified readout of your download and upload speeds.

Most customizable: Ookla Speed Test

Ookla’s speed test is the industry standard—fitting for a brand whose homepage is literally speedtest.net. Ookla’s test is reliable and packed with useful information. You can keep a record of all the tests you take if you sign up for an account, and the desktop browser version lets you change test servers to come up with more nuanced diagnostics. The app comes with a free VPN, and you can buy a premium, ad-free Ookla app for a dollar, which may be worth the investment, considering both the app and browser version can get cluttered with banner ads.

Most practical: M-Lab Speed Test

Type “internet speed test” or “Wi-Fi speed test” into Google, and this one pops up. You can run a test instantly without even going to a website. This open-source test, designed by Google-backed Measurement Lab, archives all its data and makes it available online for public perusal. You can even use M-Lab’s source code to make your own testing platform. (That’s how HighSpeedInternet.com made its speed test.) The main drawback is it doesn’t have the advanced features you see on Ookla or Speedof.me’s tests, like the ability to choose a test server or track multiple tests over time.

Most fun: Meteor

This app-only test from data analytics company Opensignal does the same thing every other speed test does, but the graphics can’t be beaten. A yellow meteor thing that flies across the screen in different directions when the test runs, and a smiling, Clippy-style virtual assistant you can tap on to let you know how good your speeds are. It’s not exactly scientific, and we wish there was a browser version, but still—who knew a speed test could be this fun?!

Most interesting: Speedof.me

Unlike the other tests on this list, this one measures your connection’s consistency in addition to your speeds—color-coded graphs track fluctuation in your download and upload speeds throughout the test. Similar to Ookla, Speedof.me keeps track of all the tests you run, letting you spot trends over time and identify potential weaknesses in your connection.

Here’s a quick breakdown of ways to boost your bandwidth.

• Upgrade your internet plan. Many providers offer multiple tiers of internet speeds, so check with your internet provider to see whether you can pay more for faster service.
• Update your router. A healthy router ensures that you get the fastest speeds possible on your plan. Aim to get a router that meets Wi-Fi standards of 802.11ac or 802.11ax, the latter better known as Wi-Fi 6.

What do the results mean?

The internet speed test measures the download and upload speeds from your router or primary Wifi point.

Download speed

Download speed represents how quickly your network can receive data from internet servers in a certain amount of time. Download speed is measured in megabits-per-second (Mbps). This is what we usually think of when we hear “internet speed.” If you have a faster connection, you'll be able to receive more data in a shorter amount of time. For example, fast download speeds mean smooth video streaming, smooth online gaming, and fast web browsing.

Note: 

• Your download speed is determined by the plan you have purchased from your Internet Service Provider (ISP.) Some plans are limited to 10 Mbps, while others can go all the way up to 1000 Mbps.
• Some devices like mobile phones won’t have speeds as fast as computers. The model or version of the device also affects speed.

What you can do with your download speed

What to do if results aren’t what you expected.

• Try to run a speed test again. Slow results can be due to congestion on your ISP’s network or on the internet, which are most crowded during peak hours like dinnertime. When networks get crowded, data gets slowed down.
• Turn off Priority device . Priority device reserves bandwidth for the prioritized device and will result in slower network check results.
• Perform a mesh test and check if there are issues with your network .
• Check with your ISP if there are any outages or issues with their internet service.

How we calculate download speed

To calculate your download speed, the Google Home app measures how much data your router or primary Wifi point can send and receive from Google’s servers in a given amount of time. We believe that testing speed against a popular server such as YouTube instead of the closest one provides a truer measure of normal, everyday internet use. 

For example, if your download speed is 45 Mbps, that means:

45 megabits of data can be transferred in one second from YouTube's servers to your home.

• Any speed test is just a  snapshot of your download speed, which depends on when and where you use the internet. You might not have the same speed for everything you do online.
• Your network's bandwidth could be throttled. Bandwidth throttling is an intentional limitation sometimes employed by ISPs to limit the download speed on a network to regulate network traffic and try to manage network congestion. If YouTube traffic is regulated, it can impact Google Home app speed test results.
• Network congestion is a factor. Depending on what you’re doing, when you’re doing it and what other people on the internet are doing, your download speed could potentially be higher or lower than your speed results. 

Upload speed

This measures how fast your network can send data to a server. Upload speed is important for online gaming, video or voice calls, and uploading large files like videos to YouTube or backing up photos. Upload speed is measured in Mbps.

Overall performance also depends on internet speed

You can have the best router in the world, but if the internet connection provided by your ISP is slow, you’ll still have slow performance.

Why do other speed tests give me different results?

Most online speed tests check for speeds between your personal devices and a server. But these results will vary depending on two factors:

• Your location
• The location of the server

Some tests automatically select the closest server to you, while others let you select from a list of several servers.

Either way, one thing’s for sure: distance matters . Test against a server that’s close to you and the results will be faster. Test against a farther server and they’ll be slower. This variability can lead to results that aren’t always representative of the speeds you’ll experience in everyday use.

Google measures the speed between your Wifi point(s) and Google’s servers. We believe that testing speed against popular servers such as YouTube’s servers provides a truer measure for normal, everyday internet use.

Why do speed test results sometimes vary from past speed tests?

Multiple factors can go into speed tests when run on a router:

• Network congestion : High data usage at a given time can limit network speeds. Congestion can happen to your Wi-Fi network when multiple devices are actively using the internet and can also happen to ISPs when a certain area receives limited network speed due to heavy usage of the internet by everyone at the same time.
• Bandwidth throttling : Sometimes ISPs intentionally throttle networks at certain times of the day to regulate network traffic and minimize congestion.

About PageSpeed Insights

PageSpeed Insights (PSI) reports on the user experience of a page on both mobile and desktop devices, and provides suggestions on how that page may be improved.

PSI provides both lab and field data about a page. Lab data is useful for debugging issues, as it is collected in a controlled environment. However, it may not capture real-world bottlenecks. Field data is useful for capturing true, real-world user experience - but has a more limited set of metrics. See How To Think About Speed Tools for more information on the two types of data.

Real-user experience data

Real-user experience data in PSI is powered by the Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) dataset. PSI reports real users' First Contentful Paint (FCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) experiences over the previous 28-day collection period. PSI also reports experiences for the experimental metric Time to First Byte (TTFB), as well as the deprecated metric First Input Delay (FID).

In order to show user experience data for a given page, there must be sufficient data for it to be included in the CrUX dataset. A page might not have sufficient data if it has been recently published or has too few samples from real users. When this happens, PSI will fall back to origin-level granularity, which encompasses all user experiences on all pages of the website. Sometimes the origin may also have insufficient data, in which case PSI will be unable to show any real-user experience data.

Assessing quality of experiences

PSI classifies the quality of user experiences into three buckets: Good, Needs Improvement, or Poor. PSI sets the following thresholds in alignment with the Web Vitals initiative:

Distribution and selected metric values

PSI presents a distribution of these metrics so that developers can understand the range of experiences for that page or origin. This distribution is split into three categories: Good, Needs Improvement, and Poor, which are represented by green, amber, and red bars. For example, seeing 11% within LCP's amber bar indicates that 11% of all observed LCP values fall between 2500ms and 4000ms.

Above the distribution bars, PSI reports the 75th percentile for all metrics. The 75th percentile is selected so that developers can understand the most frustrating user experiences on their site. These field metric values are classified as good/needs improvement/poor by applying the same thresholds shown above.

Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are a common set of performance signals critical to all web experiences. The Core Web Vitals metrics are INP, LCP, and CLS, and they may be aggregated at either the page or origin level. For aggregations with sufficient data in all three metrics, the aggregation passes the Core Web Vitals assessment if the 75th percentiles of all three metrics are Good. Otherwise, the aggregation does not pass the assessment. If the aggregation has insufficient data for INP, then it will pass the assessment if both the 75th percentiles of LCP and CLS are Good. If either LCP or CLS have insufficient data, the page or origin-level aggregation cannot be assessed.

Differences between Field Data in PSI and CrUX

The difference between the field data in PSI versus the CrUX dataset on BigQuery is that PSI’s data is updated daily, while the BigQuery dataset is updated monthly and limited to origin-level data. Both data sources represent trailing 28-day periods.

Lab diagnostics

PSI uses Lighthouse to analyze the given URL in a simulated environment for the Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, and SEO categories.

At the top of the section are scores for each category, determined by running Lighthouse to collect and analyze diagnostic information about the page. A score of 90 or above is considered good. 50 to 89 is a score that needs improvement, and below 50 is considered poor.

The Performance category also has the page's performance on different metrics, including: First Contentful Paint , Largest Contentful Paint , Speed Index , Cumulative Layout Shift , Time to Interactive , and Total Blocking Time .

Each metric is scored and labeled with a icon:

• Good is indicated with a green circle
• Needs Improvement is indicated with amber informational square
• Poor is indicated with a red warning triangle

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What device and network conditions does lighthouse use to simulate a page load.

Currently, Lighthouse simulates the page load conditions of a mid-tier device (Moto G4) device on a mobile network for mobile, and an emulated-desktop with a wired connection for desktop. PageSpeed also runs in a Google datacenter that can vary based on network conditions, you can check the location that the test was by looking at the Lighthouse Report's environment block:

Why do the field data and lab data sometimes contradict each other?

The field data is a historical report about how a particular URL has performed, and represents anonymized performance data from users in the real-world on a variety of devices and network conditions. The lab data is based on a simulated load of a page on a single device and fixed set of network conditions. As a result, the values may differ. Why is the 75th percentile chosen for all metrics?

Our goal is to make sure that pages work well for the majority of users. By focusing on 75th percentile values for our metrics, this ensures that pages provide a good user experience under the most difficult device and network conditions. See Defining the Core Web Vitals metrics thresholds for more info.

What is a good score for the lab data?

Any green score (90+) is considered good, but note that having good lab data does not necessarily mean real-user experiences will also be good.

Why does the performance score change from run to run? I didn’t change anything on my page!

Variability in performance measurement is introduced via a number of channels with different levels of impact. Several common sources of metric variability are local network availability, client hardware availability, and client resource contention.

Why is the real-user CrUX data not available for a URL or origin?

Chrome User Experience Report aggregates real-world speed data from opted-in users and requires that a URL must be public ( crawlable and indexable ) and have sufficient number of distinct samples that provide a representative, anonymized view of performance of the URL or origin.

The Las Vegas–LA electric high-speed rail line just broke ground

Brightline West, a future electric high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, broke ground today in Nevada.

On December 6, 2023, Electrek reported that the Biden administration awarded Brightline West $3 billion in funding. The money was part of $6 billion previously earmarked for high-speed rail, and came from the Biden administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law as part of its Federal-State Partnership Program. (The other $3 billion will go to the public high-speed Los Angeles to San Francisco rail project, which has more than 100 miles of a high-speed line under construction.)

Brightline West will be a privately owned, 218-mile, all-electric high-speed rail service that will include a flagship station in Las Vegas (pictured above), with additional stations in Apple Valley, Hesperia, and Rancho Cucamonga. At speeds of more than 186 miles per hour, trains will take passengers from Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga, which is 37 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, in just 2 hours and 10 minutes – twice as fast as the normal drive time. 

Florida-based Brightline Holdings is expected to model the Las Vegas-LA rail line on its high-speed route between Miami and Orlando – the US’s only privately owned and operated intercity passenger railroad.

Brightline West estimates it will remove 3 million cars from I-15 annually, reducing over 400,000 tons of carbon emissions annually. It also anticipates creating an astounding 35,000 union jobs. The federal funding will enable the project, which is aiming to open by 2028, to begin construction.

Rick Harnish, executive director of the national nonprofit High Speed Rail Alliance , said today:

This is a transformational investment in American trains. Getting a high-speed line in operation this decade will show Americans this terrific way to travel. If you have ever felt frustrated by traffic gridlock or airport hassles, a better future just got closer.

I'm very excited to see this project completed. I never go to Vegas personally, but I think the more Americans that are introduced to the beauty of high speed rail, the less resistance there will be for future projects.

And why do people profess that the money spent has simply disappeared? That money went to jobs in the area and across the nation, both directly and indirectly. I've read that the economic multiplier is about 1.8, I don't understand how you have an issue with that.

2024 Kentucky Derby predictions, odds, horses, contenders: Surprising picks from proven horse racing insider

Prior to her television career, she worked for trainers Steve Asmussen and Ron Moquett. She also is married to Santa Anita-based trainer Ryan Hanson.

Yu also has tremendous handicapping chops. In a wide-open Kentucky Derby in 2021, she gave out Medina Spirit, who crossed the finish line first, as the winner at 12-1. In Pool 5 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager two years ago, she suggested a play on All Other 3-Year-Olds, which cashed at a whopping 18-1 when Rich Strike won the Derby.

Yu enters this year's Kentucky Derby on a roll. She correctly called National Treasure to win the Pegasus World Cup. In the month leading up to the Kentucky Derby, she predicted Stronghold's upset win in the Santa Anita Derby and smashed the exacta in the Apple Blossom Handicap.

Top 2024 Kentucky Derby predictions

One surprise: Yu is fading Fierceness, even though he is the 5-2 Kentucky Derby favorite. Fierceness is coming off a victory in the Florida Derby, but with that comes a substantial drop in his value. The Florida Derby winner is guaranteed a spot in the Kentucky Derby field, but only three horses have won the Kentucky Derby after winning the Florida Derby since 2010. Always Dreaming was the last horse to win those races back-to-back.

Fierceness has won three of five career races, but this will be his first run at Churchill Downs. Fierceness is trained by Todd Pletcher, who has produced just two Kentucky Derby winners in 62 starts. Pletcher's last Kentucky Derby victory came in 2017 with Always Dreaming. There's a lot to like about Fierceness' previous success, but Yu doesn't see the value in playing him as a favorite in a large 2024 Kentucky Derby field.

Another curveball: Yu is high on Just a Touch, even though he's a longshot at 10-1 in the Kentucky Derby odds 2024. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Just a Touch finished second against a strong field at the Blue Grass Stakes and third at the Gotham. The Brad Cox-trainee posted impressive speed figures at both races, which indicate the three-year-old colt could make a strong run at Churchill Downs.

Based on his showing at the Blue Grass Stakes, Yu believes Just a Touch is being undervalued in the 2024 Kentucky Derby odds. "If Sierra Leone runs into traffic issues in that 20-horse field, Just a Touch should be squarely in contention.
