WHAT TO EXPECT

Our group trip to London is curated for travelers in their 20s and 30s looking to explore historic landmarks, embrace pub culture, and immerse themselves in world-famous art, theater, and museums.

Few cities on the planet have as much going on as London. Start things off in local fashion over a few pints at the pub with your new crew. Over the next four days, you’ll raise a pinkie at high tea in Kensington Gardens (where Prince Harry and William grew up), roam ultra-hip Camden Town, and find out how multiculturalism makes for amazing cuisine in the East End. You’ll even catch a show at the Globe Theater, Shakespeare’s old stomping grounds.

With arches, spires, and punk rock, this is as authentic, unfiltered, and dynamic as big cities get. Whether you’re spending your entire vacation here or passing through on your way to another European destination, in London, there’s never a shortage of iconic sights to see and explore.

Day 1 - London London Calling

After catching the tube from the airport or taking a Black Cab past Big Ben and into Central London, it’s only fitting that you kick off day one with a couple pints at the hotel to get to know your new crew.

From there, we’ll head to our welcome dinner at the pub, where you can try your first plate of fish and chips (with nearly 3,500 taverns in the city, a visit to at least one is a requirement for the full English experience). Over background riffs of The Clash on the jukebox and football banter on the telly, you’ll make fast friends in no time.

If you’re knackered (exhausted), head back to the hotel, otherwise head out on the town. London’s winding streets are full of historic bars, tiny pubs, chaotic clubs, and everything in between. Cheers, mate!

6.png

Day 2 - London Royal Treatment

After breakfast with the crew, it’s time for you to dive headfirst into London’s culture and heritage from the bohemian to the high-brow.

On a walking tour through Camden’s hip, graffitied streets, stroll past vintage markets, legendary music venues, and more leather jackets and mohawks than you can keep up with. After that, hop on the tube for afternoon tea and a tour of Kensington Gardens. We’ll zig-zag through sprawling, manicured landscapes (originally part of King Henry VIII’s deer hunting grounds in Hyde Park), sip Earl Grey, and indulge like aristocrats in an array of scones, pastries, clotted cream, and jams.

That night, dive into London’s diverse immigrant backbone and the cuisine it’s created on an East End food tour with everything from centuries-old local staples to modern delicacies made by award-winning chefs. Delicious.

group travel london

    Day 3 - London O Romeo, Romeo

Your morning’s free to explore a few of London’s 192 museums with friends. If you’re a history buff, decipher the past and marvel at the Rosetta Stone in The British Museum, or, if you’re after something more modern, cross the Thames to South Bank.

Head to the Tate Modern for contemporary masterpieces and then grab a bite at Borough Market. Take the riverwalk, and you’ll find bright, graffitied concrete walls and pillars in a perpetual state of change (just watch out for the skateboarders).

We’ll recap an amazing four days over a farewell dinner before we step back in time for the ultimate London experience, a show at the world-famous, open-air Globe Theater to watch Shakespeare the way it was intended to be seen.

group travel london

Day 4 - London Tata for Now!

Honestly, you could spend a lifetime exploring London; it’s one of the world’s great cities.

From pints at the pub where Dickens once drank to the buttoned-up scene at Parliament Square, the diversity of experiences you can find here is staggering. And with Westminster Abbey’s stained glass windows, the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, and Hackney Wick’s wild warehouse parties, there’s always more to discover.

If you stick around, you don’t need to decide between The Beatles and The Stones, but you will need to figure out if you’re an Arsenal supporter or Chelsea’s your team. On the other hand, London Heathrow is one of the biggest hubs for mainland Europe (and the rest of the world); now that the jetlag’s gone, you could join us for amazing cuisine in the Basque Country , or come along for dreamy beaches in Sardinia.

“I’ve been walking about London for the last 30 years, and I find something fresh in it every day.”

The Tube is the oldest subway in the world. It opened in 1863!

3.png

The Clash and The Sex Pistols helped kick off punk rock in London in the 70s.

4.png

In 1866, the Great Fire of London burned 70% of the city over four days. It’s the reason most buildings are now made of brick.

There are limited single rooms available on our London trips. Book early if you prefer one, as they usually fill up.

On European trips, we stay as close to historic city centers as possible. This means your accommodations will often be on the small side, quirky, and unique (we love this!).

From the British Museum's historical treasures to the vibrant performances in the West End, or world class shopping on Oxford Street it offers a diverse range of experiences. Iconic sights, including the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, London Bridge, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, the London Eye, and The Shard, blend history and modernity. Cuisine ranges from traditional British pub fare in Covent Garden to Indian dishes on Brick Lane or the eclectic offerings of Borough Market. "I love surprising our guests with London's incredible diversity. You can go from admiring the dazzling architecture and shopping at the trendy boutiques, to watching grand royal ceremonies and meeting the locals in a 16th-century pub - all in one day."

Travel Director

Admire the Big Ben and the imposing Houses of Parliament

As you touch down in London, you’ll surely be searching the skyline for Big Ben, the iconic Clock Tower at the Palace of Westminster, or the Houses of Parliament. You'll have the chance to admire these impressive buildings in the company of your London travel guide and listen for the famous chimes that have been ringing out across London since 1859.

Learn about the history of the Buckingham Palace

You’re in for a royal time at Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of the British royal family since 1837. It’s one of the most iconic places to visit in London, and we’ll take you to marvel at this magnificent palace, learn about it’s centuries-old history, and perhaps even wave to the King if he’s home.

Ramble through London's picturesque Royal Parks

If you love a lush park or garden, you’re in for a real treat in London, with over 5,000 acres of gorgeous green space across the eight Royal Parks. Spend your days strolling, cycling, or simply relaxing in these beautiful parks, from the famous Hyde Park to the ornate Kensington Gardens.

Go on a shopping spree around Carnaby Street and Soho

We’ll dive into London’s West End with a tour around the buzzing borough of Soho, where you’ll get a taste of London’s diverse culture, history and cuisine. Wander down the iconic Oxford and Regent Streets and of course, Carnaby Street, the city’s shopping mecca, and the epicentre of the Swinging Sixties in London.

See the stately Changing of the Guard

You’ll watch history come alive when we take you to Buckingham Palace to witness the spectacular Changing of the Guard ceremony. It’s a full-on display of royal pomp and military tradition, with the soldiers of The Queen’s Guard in bearskin hats and bright-red uniforms marching down the Mall, and you can’t miss it on your London trip.

Our top 5 things to do in London

With an overwhelming number of iconic London attractions to explore, where to begin? When you travel London with Trafalgar, we’ll show you all the very best of the city.

Tate Modern

As one of the world’s largest museums of modern and contemporary art, the Tate Modern is an unmissable London attraction. You’ll find everything here from vibrant artworks to films and performance art, and you can’t miss the giant Turbine Hall, a five-storey tall room used to display extraordinarily large art installations.

Museum of London

If you’ve ever wanted to learn the history of this great city, the Museum of London is the place to go. It’s the world’s largest urban history collection and you’ll learn all about England’s capital from prehistoric to modern times. The museum even overlooks the remains of the Roman city wall on the edge of the oldest area of London.

Science Museum

You could spend hours exploring the treasures of the Science Museum including the world’s greatest innovations, ranging from Puffing Billy, the oldest surviving steam locomotive, to the first jet engine, to the Apollo 10 command module. You’ll travel from the Industrial Revolution all the way into the future in this amazing playground of the mind.

Best museums in London

London’s museums are among the world’s best, with millions of visitors each year to marvel at the incredible history, art and design. What treasures will you find when we take you to these great institutions?

Cottage Pie

It doesn’t get more comforting than a traditional cottage pie, and you’ve got to order this English staple at least once in a classic London pub. It’s been a beloved dish for generations, originating as a clever way to make a hearty meal from leftovers like beef, peas and carrots, topped with creamy mashed potatoes.

Cornish Pasty

Make a beeline for the nearest bakery in London and discover these little pockets of deliciousness. They’re made from shortcrust pastry stuffed with beef, potatoes, swede, onion and egg, then baked until golden, forming a rich gravy inside its own tasty casing. You’re sure to go back for more than just one Cornish pasty!

Named after the prestigious boys’ boarding school of the same name, this simple yet delicious treat is made from a refreshing blend of cream, strawberries and crushed meringue. It’s a classic British dessert and you can even try it at The National Café at the National Gallery, one of the best art museums in London.

Best food in London

Our London tours are big on foodie experiences, and you can go from a traditional English afternoon tea, to a delicious culinary adventure through Chinatown in the West End.

What travelers say about their London tours

Travel tips for london trips.

One of our favorite parts about our London tours is that it’s always a good time to take one. Despite being farther north than much of North America, England has a temperate climate—which means tours to London are enjoyable any time of the year.

Spring and fall offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds at the most popular sites, making the off-season a perfect time to visit England. Winter offers plenty of charm, especially when Christmas markets line the streets in London and around the country.

No matter what time of year you plan to travel to London, expect some rain—but don’t let it keep you from enjoying this beautiful destination! Just have your wellies with you (that’s British for “rain boots”).

The top attractions for all London trips include:

  • Buckingham Palace. A trip to the enormous royal residence is a must for all London tours. Be sure to catch the famous Changing of the Guard!
  • London Eye. This iconic ferris wheel boasts the best views of the city. It’s even air-conditioned.
  • Big Ben. This is the famous clock attached to the Palace of Westminster. You’ll get the best view from the Westminster Bridge.

Check out our London Travel Guide for a full list of the top attractions we feature in our London tour packages.

There are infinite things to pass the time on our London tours , but some of our favorites include:

  • Shopping at Harrods, the United Kingdom’s largest department store
  • Sipping tea at Kensington Palace’s Orangery, a stunning Victorian-era setting for a midday snack
  • Strolling through Trafalgar Square and appreciating the art inside The National Gallery
  • Crossing Abbey Road, the famous location where the Beatles took their iconic photo
  • Perusing vintage books, antiques, and street food at Portobello Road Market
  • Eating fish and chips at Rules, London’s oldest restaurant

Our escorted tours of London, like The City Experience , are your sure-fire way to make the most of your time there.

Here’s what to pack for a tour in London:

  • A windproof umbrella and raincoat. London has its fair share of drizzly conditions throughout the year (it’s part of the quintessential London experience!), and being prepared for rain means being prepared for wind.
  • A comfortable backpack. That way, you’ll always have what you need, no matter what.
  • Lots of layers. The weather in London turns fast, and layers are a great way to make sure you’re always comfortable.
  • UK power adapter. This three-pronged adapter is different from the two-prong European adapter, so make sure you order the right one before departing on our London tours. This guide to power adapters and converters can help.

Apart from the famous fish and chips, you can’t go wrong with a traditional Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding (popovers), roasted potatoes, and a vegetable on the side.

Meat pies are another popular food in London. The ingredients inside a meat pie can vary, but there are always three main options: beef, mushrooms, and good English ale.

And while it’s not necessarily a food, no trip to London is complete without trying a traditional afternoon tea. There are hundreds of teas to choose from in England, and you’ll typically enjoy them alongside light sandwiches, scones, or pastries. Yum!

If you're going to spend a fair amount of free time in London, you may benefit from purchasing The London Pass. It's around £75 for a day pass, but is very worth it if you plan to visit several of the city's attractions in a short period of time!

And remember: people in England drive on the opposite side of the road than we're used to, so please to look both ways before crossing the street on our London tours!

Our London Travel Guide will answer all your questions. It’s full of the top travel tips, including what to see, what to do, and what to know.

One of the perks of going guided is that you’ll see the top sites without planning a thing or worrying about transportation. Along the way, your expert local guide will dive deep into the history and culture of the city, as well.

Another benefit of our London group tours is meeting some incredible people along the way. You’ll see the city alongside new friends in your group, and get to know our guides as they share unique perspectives on London.

And, with all kinds of excursions and opportunities to explore during free time, our London guided tours give you plenty of time to set off on your own, too.

TOUR ITINERARY

Coming to visit the UK as part of a larger party? Regardless of whether you are a company holding an important team event, a missionary group on transit through the capital or a travel agent organising a large group visit, London Magical Tours' range of minibus and larger private bus tours can cater for all needs and budgets. Through our decades of experience, we understand the importance of planning and paying attention to the details which make your event a truly special day to remember. Groups travel in a modern mini-bus or large coach dependant on the size of your group. Multiple coaches can travel together for groups over 100 passengers. What's more, private group tours are a very affordable way of discovering the UK, with big savings off the standard tour prices: the larger the number of passengers, the greater the saving off the per person price. Simply choose from any of our full range of tours, all of which are available for larger parties.

THE EXPERIENCE

Unlike other tours, the experience is not just an orientation service where you are left "to wander". It is also not just a drive where all the time is spent inside the vehicle: Our tours are fully escorted, whether with a professional driver-guide at standard level (one person) or with your own sightseeing team at the VIP levels (professional tour guide plus, in addition, a chauffeur), so that you never miss a beat. There are no parking problems or walking long distances to see the sights. The curbside service stops right by the attractions, away from the masses. At standard level photo stops are made with commentary throughout. At our VIP levels with your own expert guide and extra chauffeur, stops are made at the key landmarks for you to go outside on walking tours led by your guide to sightsee in detail, hearing anecdotes and stories about London's past and present, while your chauffeur driven vehicle waits with no parking worries. Put simply - there is no better way to help make the most of your valuable sightseeing time.

ENTRANCE OPTIONS

Groups benefit from special group savings on the cost of entrance tickets, which are offered with fast track entry.

FOOD OPTIONS

Enhance your group sightseeing experience with our range of lunch bags, traditional pub meals or afternoon tea services. All are offered with special priority service, exclusively to London Magical Tours guests to help avoid delays and ensure you make the most of your day of sightseeing. These can be prebooked at the time of booking.

Wow the history of London is far more interesting than we had expected. It was great to go to the different parts of town and hear all of the stories of London in a short period of time. Highly recommended.

The tour of London was wonderfully educational. Our guide was impressively learned of the history of London and actively involved the students. Although the goal of our trip was to study French, we enjoyed learning about another piece of European culture and history. In addition, we experienced an authentic pub lunch of fish and chips, while watching the Royal Wedding on the television, a historic event!

GO BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE FORMER OLYMPIC STADIUM One of London’s newest things to do is a tour of the former Olympic Stadium. A THREE-HOUR WALK IN CHELSEA & BATTERSEA

This delightful circular walk ambles through the grounds of the Royal Hospital and across the river to Battersea Park, with its romantic Victorian landscaping. It then returns to the narrow village streets of Chelsea and the stylish shops on the King’s Road.* For more detail on sights in Chelsea and Battersea see the new DK Eyewitness Guide LONDON 2017 which includes 890 photographs, 140 illustrations, a pull-out city map and free audio walks.

SLOANE SQUARE TO BATTERSEA PARK From the station (1) turn left and walk down Holbein Plae. The Renaissance painter’s connection with Chelsea stems from his friendship with Sir Thomas More, who lived nearby. Pass the cluster of antique shops (2) as you turn on to Royal Hospital Road. Enter the grounds of the Royal Hospital (3) designed by Christopher Wren, and turn left into Ranelagh Gardens (4). The small pavilion by John Soane (5) displays a history of the area as Georgian pleasure gardens – it was the most fashionable meeting place for London society. Leave the gardens for fine views of the hospital and Grinling Gibbon’s bronze of Charles II (6). The granite obelisk (7) commemorates the 1849 battle at Chilianwalla, in what is now Pakistan, and forms the centre-piece of the main marquee at the Chelsea Flower Show. BATTERSEA PARK When crossing the Chelsea Bridge (8) (1937), look up to see four gilded galleons on top of the pillars at each end. Turn into Battersea Park (9), one of London’s liveliest, and follow the river to enjoy the excellent views of Chelsea. Turn left at the Buddhist Peace Pagoda (10) to enter the main part of the park. Past the bowling greens are Henry Moore’s sculpture of Three Standing Figures (11) (1948) and the lake, a favoured spot for wildfowl. (There are boats for hire.) Just beyond the sculpture, head northwest and, after crossing the central avenue, fork right and make for the wooden gate into the rustic Old English Garden (12). Leave the garden by the metal gate and return to Chelsea via the Victorian Albert Bridge (13). TIPS FOR WALKERS Starting point: Sloane Square Length: 4 miles (6.5km) Getting there: Sloane Square is the nearest Tube. There are frequent buses 11, 19, 22, 349 to Sloane Square and along the King’s Road. Royal Hospital grounds are open 10am-6pm Mon-Sat, 2-6pm Sun. Stopping off points: There is a café in Battersea Park, by the lake. Cheyne Walk Brasserie, on Cheyne Walk, serves upmarket Provencal food. There are plenty of pubs, restaurants and sandwich shops to be found along the King’s Road. The Chelsea Farmers Market on Sydney Street has several cafés.THE BACKSTREETS OF CHELSEA Over the bridge is David Wynne’s sculpture of a boy and dolphin (14) (1975). Pass the sought-after residences on Cheyne Walk and the statues of historian Thomas Carlyle (15) and Sir Thomas More (16) – this area was renowned for gatherings of intellectuals. Past Chelsea Old Church (17) is Roper’s Gardens (18) with its carving by Jacob Epstein. Just beyond these is the medieval Crosby Hall (19). On Justice Walk (20) are two early Georgian houses – Duke’s House and Monmouth House. Turn left to pass the site of the Chelsea porcelain factory (21), which used to make highly fashionable (and today highly collectable) wares in the late 18th century. Glebe Place (22) has retained much of its original character. Where Glebe Place meets the King’s Road are three early 18th-century houses (23). Cross Dovehouse Green, which used to be a burial ground, to Chelsea Farmers Market (24), an enclave of cafes and craft shops. THE KING’S ROAD Leave the market on Sydney Street and cross into the garden of St Luke’s Church (25), where Charles Dickens was married in 1836. The walk then winds through quaint back streets until it rejoins the King’s Road (26), which was very fashionable in the 1960s. On the left is The Pheasantry (27). Look down the side streets on both left and right to see Wellington Square (28), then Royal Avenue (29), intended as a triumphal way to the Royal Hospital, and Blacklands Terrace (30), where book-lovers will want to visit John Sandoe’s shop. The Duke of York’s Territorial Headquarters (31) (1803) on the right – now home to the Saatchi Gallery – marks the approach to Sloane Square (32) and the Royal Court Theatre.

Engaging With Local Communities

The essence of this topic is crucial to understanding the broader context. Let’s explore further to lay a solid groundwork.

Trying Traditional British Cuisine as a Group

When it comes to group dining experiences in London , there’s nothing quite like diving into traditional British cuisine together. Sampling classic dishes not only tantalizes your taste buds but also strengthens bonds within the group, making your trip even more memorable.

The Charm of Classic British Dishes

Taste is an integral part of travel, and for groups visiting London, trying out quintessential English fare is a must. Whether it’s Fish & Chips or Beef Wellington, these culinary delights have stood the test of time because they represent Britain’s gastronomic history at its finest.

Fish & Chips, with its perfectly battered fish paired with crispy fries served on newspaper wrappings is perfect for casual get-togethers. For something more formal yet hearty, Beef Wellington is unbeatable – tender beef coated in mushroom duxelles and wrapped up snugly in puff pastry – truly food that warms both heart and belly.

Pudding Time. The Sweet Side of England

No meal would be complete without dessert. So make sure you try some quintessentially English puddings like Sticky Toffee Pudding or Eton Mess during your visit.

Eton Mess, a delightful mix of meringue pieces, fresh strawberries and whipped cream makes summer afternoons feel special while Sticky Toffee Pudding, a dense sponge cake drenched in sweet toffee sauce and often served with vanilla ice-cream or custard, is comfort food at its finest.

Group-friendly Restaurants for a British Food Adventure

With over 6,000 restaurants in London , it might seem daunting to choose the perfect spot for your group. But fear not. Here are some recommendations that serve traditional English fare and cater well to groups.

Check out Rules, . As London’s oldest restaurant, it’s renowned for its specialty in classic game dishes. It’s a must-visit.

Maximizing the Group Experience in London

The city of London offers a vibrant and varied landscape for group travel.

Tips for Seamless Group Travel in London

Making sure everyone is on the same page is key to smooth travels. Regularly touch base with your group members about plans and preferences, but remember to balance scheduled activities with free time. It’s important that each member feels heard and included.

This can boost the atmosphere of your journey, making it more enjoyable for all participants.

Exploring as a Cohesive Unit

A shared experience can strengthen bonds within your group. Try out something new together – perhaps a boat ride down the River Thames or an escape room challenge? The novelty will spark excitement, creating lasting memories tied to both the activity and location.

Your adventures across iconic landmarks like the Tower of London, bustling markets such as Covent Garden, or enjoying traditional British cuisine at popular restaurants add depth to these connections formed during travel.

Finding Balance between Solo Time and Group Activities

Although travelling in groups provides opportunities for shared experiences, individuals may still want some ‘me’ time. Facilitate this by having certain parts of the day allocated as solo exploration periods where people are free to pursue their own interests around town. Remember: you’re not just travelers—you’re also ambassadors representing diverse perspectives.

Safety Considerations while Travelling as a Large Party

In any big city like London, security should be a top priority for travelers. Encourage all to stay mindful of their environment, especially in busy spots. A good tip is having a common meeting point at each location you visit, just in case anyone gets separated from the group.

Group Accommodations

Accommodation can make or break your London experience as a group traveler. Choose lodgings that are centrally located and have easy access to public transport—this will help maximize sightseeing time while minimizing commute hassle.

You could consider staying near popular shopping centers like Harrods or Selfridges for some retail therapy after long days exploring the city.

Practical Tips for Group Accommodations in London

Choosing the right lodging is a crucial part of planning group trips to London. With diverse needs and preferences, you need accommodations that offer comfort without breaking the bank.

Luxury Shopping Near Accommodations

Finding group-friendly accommodations near popular shopping centers can significantly enhance your travel experience. Imagine ending an eventful day with some retail therapy at high-end stores like Harrods, or exploring unique fashion trends at places like Selfridges. Rather than simply shopping, why not take the opportunity to dive into the local culture?

The convenience factor plays a huge role too. Having accommodation nearby means less time spent on commuting and more time for fun.

Selecting The Right Lodging For Your Group Trips

To make sure everyone feels comfortable during their stay, consider different factors before booking your accommodation. Think about space requirements – larger groups might find apartment-style lodgings more convenient than standard hotel rooms. Check if there are communal areas where your group can gather for meals or discussions.

You’ll also want to look into location: staying centrally located will allow easy access to major attractions, reducing transport costs and hassle. Finally, remember to read reviews from other travelers – they provide valuable insights that could help guide your decision-making process.

Tips For Booking And Managing Group Accommodations

Avoid last-minute stress by starting early when booking accommodations for large groups – options tend to get booked up quickly. Make use of online platforms designed specifically for group bookings; these often offer special deals tailored towards larger parties.

When managing your accommodations, clear communication is key. Ensure everyone understands the booking details and expectations during the stay. For instance, you might want to assign roommates beforehand or establish a cleaning rota if staying in self-catered lodgings.

Making Group Accommodations Affordable

Not only is it more fun, but sticking together as a group can also save you some serious dough. When everyone chips in on lodging, suddenly those swanky places become much more affordable.

So, you’ve soaked in the perks of group trips to London. From shared experiences at iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace and Tower Bridge to saving on costs through group deals – it’s clear why traveling together is a hit.

Unearthing hidden gems such as Covent Garden and engaging with local communities gives your trip that unique touch. It lets you dive deep into British culture while also offering opportunities for language exchange.

You’ve savored the delights of traditional British cuisine and learned about selecting suitable lodgings. Remember, convenience matters!

The journey doesn’t end here though! Keep these insights handy when planning your next adventure because an unforgettable trip awaits you in London!

Everything you need to know before you go to London in 2024

Make the most of your trip to London with these expert tips © FilippoBacci / Getty Images

Even though I was born and raised in London, I’ve been caught out without a brolly (umbrella) in the rain countless times. I’ve felt the scorn of others when not noticing there’s a queue, and I’ve made the costly error of driving into the city. But as a local, I’ve made these mistakes so you don’t have to; I hope my experience and top tips help inspire a smooth and memorable trip to the UK capital.

A side view of a woman sitting on the London tube looking at her phone

1. Know your Tube etiquette

One easy way to annoy commuters is to not follow these very easy rules when traveling around on London’s Underground. Get your ticket, bank card or smart phone ready before you reach the ticket barriers so you don’t create a queue. Stand on the right when using escalators so passengers wanting to walk can pass. Let passengers off the train first (stand to either the right or left of the doors) before you board. Offer your seat to someone who may need it more, such as a pregnant person, an elderly person, someone who is disabled and so on. And definitely don't try to strike up conversations with the locals (if you want to blend in).

2. Skip the car

London ’s roads are small, its traffic is chaotic, and there’s hardly anywhere to park. Plus, you’ll be charged for driving your car in to the center of London – the congestion charge is £15 a day, while the separate ULEZ charge starts from £12.50 and only certain energy efficient or electric cars are exempt. The best way to get around is on public transport (although check on the TFL website or app for information on industrial action and weekend engineering works). Use the Tube, hop on a bus, or rent a bike or e-bike if in the center of the city; cycle maps, highlighting designated paths for bikes, can be downloaded online.

3. Bring layers (and a raincoat)

London’s weather is changeable – temperatures have been known to rise and fall by 20°C in a matter of days. Showers can happen any time of year so pack a brolly (umbrella) or raincoat in your day bag and wear layers that you can easily take off. In summer, always carry a bottle of water on the Tube (the deep tunnels were built before air-conditioning). And while the climate may be mercurial, don’t let bad weather put you off going about your day – simply switch to more indoor-based activities, there are hundreds of them to choose from.

4. Opt for comfort over fashion when it comes to shoes

Most people cover a lot of ground when exploring London, plus different terrains: grass in the many green spaces, long Tube escalators, slippery pavements and even cobblestones. Museums require leg work, as do bridges, boats and parks. Heels are pretty pointless in London, unless you are getting a door-to-door cab to a venue.

5. Make reservations for top restaurants

While there are plenty of terrific places to eat that welcome walk-ins (although be prepared to queue for the best joints), many of the best restaurants are booked up weeks in advance, especially new ones or those run by celebrity chefs. More restaurants have adopted booking policies and deposits since the pandemic, so if you’re looking for a unique dining experience, you will need to book ahead.

6. Do as the Londoners do and go to a supper club

Embed yourself in London life with a dinner party with locals; a supper club is a superb way to try home-cooked local food from London’s diverse community. These are locally run endeavors, taking place in people’s homes or taking over whole restaurants – try The Bridge Club  serving British eats made with French cooking techniques in South London, Dinner Ladies putting on immersive food experiences, or Indian street food run out of local chef Dhruv Mittal’s flat.

7. Know how to order at a pub

There are unspoken rules when visiting a pub. One person – not a whole group – should go to the bar. Stand anywhere and wait your turn. If someone was waiting before you, it’s polite to signal for the bar staff to serve them first if they come over to you. When you go back to your table with the drinks, you just bought "a round". Now everyone at the table owes you a drink throughout the evening, each person has a turn at buying a round. Last orders are when the bell rings, and from this moment you have 20 minutes to finish your drink.

8. Go to a football game

Football rivalries run high in the city, with 17 football clubs, including seven Premier League teams and four Women’s Super League Teams. Giant temples to "The Beautiful Game" sit around London and are great places to feel the collective energy of the city, as locals congregate (come rain or shine) to watch their heroes on the field. You'll need to book tickets far in advance for Premier League Games, but women’s and lower league men’s games are usually easier to come by – and arguably far more fun to watch. Visit local team websites to book.

9. Be polite and embrace the art of queueing

Londoners (and British people alike) are big on manners, and not having any will get you into trouble. Say "please" and "thank you", and apologize if you bump into someone. Don’t stare at people on the Tube, and hold a door open for people behind you when you walk through one. Let people pass, and be sure to help people in need (people with buggies at the top of stairs, older people crossing the road etc). If there is a queue to the attraction you want to visit or a stall you want to buy from, join it – you’ll might not get into a confrontation if you skip the line, but you will be judged.

10. Make a plan, but don't go overboard

London is massive, so getting from one side to the other takes a couple of hours in a car (and that's if there is light traffic). Riding the Tube is quicker, but journey times can still be long if attractions are on either side of the city. Minimize travel times by exploring by neighborhood – do a day in Central London, another day in West London and so on. Plan on spending at least a few hours in the big museums and galleries, as there is so much to see. Take many breaks, grab lunch at a cafe or pub and pause to take in the views. It’s easy to get carried away with the energetic pace of London, but sights are more enjoyable if you adopt a more leisurely approach.

11. Don’t leave your stuff lying around

Don’t leave your bags unattended at public venues like stations, buses, theaters or museums, as this is likely to cause alarm and your bag may be removed – or stolen. Only take with you what you are able to carry for several hours. Luggage storage is generally rare in London, but hotels will likely store bags once you check out. Avoid carrying mobile phones in back pockets or where they can be easily swiped from your hand in the street. Never leave your phone or purse on a cafe table, opportunistic thieves will distract you and it will be gone before you realise what's happening.

12. It's an election year in London

The incumbent mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, will face an election race in May 2024 (he's been in the top job since 2016). This might not be particularly noteworthy for travelers, but it does mean there's greater incentive to make sure London is working well. Policing, housing and public transport are high on the agenda for all the candidates. Services have been expanded to support the rising number of "rough sleepers" in the city, with the visible issue of homelessness a concern for locals and visitors alike. Tube strikes, which brought the city to a standstill in 2023, have been averted but industrial action on national rail services in and out of the city continue. The city goes to the polls on Thursday 2 May, 2024.

More About London

From treasured landmarks to sipping afternoon tea, there is something for everyone in London. The Houses of Parliament with Big Ben, the giant clock and bell, on the banks of the Thames are the classic backdrop of London, with Westminster Abbey, the site of coronations and royal marriages, standing nearby. Enjoy panoramic views from Tower Bridge and visit the nearby Tower of London, with its rich history and the crown jewels of England. Speaking of royalty, catch the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, the residence of the reigning monarchs. In central London, enjoy Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, the British Museum, and St. Paul’s Cathedral. London also has a splendid array of markets to explore, like Covent Garden or Portobello Road on Notting Hill. And for evening entertainment, enjoy world-renowned theaters and lively clubs in London’s West End. With all this and more, the historic and vibrant European capital of London is an absolute must-see.

The heaviest tourist season runs mid-April through mid-October, with another peak around Christmas—though the tide never really ebbs. Spring is the time to see the countryside and the royal London parks and gardens at their freshest; fall to enjoy near-ideal exploring conditions. In late summer, be warned: air-conditioning is rarely found in places other than department stores, modern restaurants, hotels, and cinemas in London, and in a hot summer you'll swelter. Winter can be rather dismal, but all the theatres, concerts, and exhibitions go full speed.

It's virtually impossible to forecast London weather, but you can be fairly certain that it will not be what you expect. It's generally mild—with some savage exceptions, especially in summer. In short, be prepared for anything: layers and an umbrella are your friends.

London Group Travelcard 2024

Cheapest transport pass for groups of 10 or more well, sometimes....

London Group Travelcard

Summary of 1-day London Group Travelcard

The London one-day Group Travelcard is the only group ticket for London's public transport system.

There is no group travel product for longer durations than one day.

The Group Travelcard covers the same public transport as other public transport passes for individuals like standard Travelcards and Oyster.

If you are a group of 10 or more, this ticket is worth benchmarking against other alternatives but normally only becomes attractive financially if your group is staying outside the centre of London (zones 1 to 3).

Key rules   Purchasing 1-day group Travelcards   Purchasing from Visit Britain   Alternative tickets   Oyster & Travelcard prices compared

Key rules of the London Group Travelcard

You must have a minimum of 10 people and they all need to travel together. The 10 people can be a mix of adults and children.

The Group Travelcard is off-peak only, you cannot use it before 9.30am Mondays to Fridays. You can use them all day weekends and national holidays.

The Group Travelcard is only valid for zones 1-6. Most tourists only need zones 1 and 2.

The Group Travelcard is valid on all public transport that the standard individual Travelcard is valid for, including buses, London Underground and Overground, DLR and trains.

The Group Travelcard, like the 1 Day Travelcard, is valid for the calendar day, not 24 hours from first use.

The child age band is under 16, like standard Travelcards and Oysters there are no seniors concessions for visitors

You can only purchase from Underground Station ticket machines, Overground or TfL Rail station ticket offices and some National Rail stations that Tube and London Overground services run through – and only on the day of travel.

However you can buy them online in advance, from the Visit Britain TFL Travel shop .

If you are not travelling beyond zones 1 to 3, a standard individual Oyster Card is cheaper than than the Group Travelcard.

Purchasing 1-day Group Travelcards

You can buy Group Travelcards on the day of travel or in advance from Visit Britain or the TFL website (see below).

Buying in London there is a restricted list of outlets (compared with other public transport tickets) that you can purchase from.

Most people will buy Group Travelcards from Underground Station ticket machines. You can also purchase from London Overground or TFL Rail station ticket offices and some National Rail stations that Tube and London Overground services run through.

You can use credit and debit cards to purchase.

Group Travelcard 2024 Prices

* Children under 11 travel free without a ticket on London buses, London Underground and Overground, DLR and some rail services.

Buy your Group Travelcards from Visit Britain in advance

If having to purchase on the day of travel and from a ticket machine is a lot of hassle and stress you do not need, you can order Group Travelcards online in advance from Visit Britain or the TFL website.

See banner below to order from Visit Britain.

Both sites only sell zone 1-6 Group Travelcards, they do not sell Group Travelcards for zones 1-9.

Tickets are sent to your home address wherever in the world you reside, for which there is a charge.

You can choose between standard and an express delivery option. When you select your country on ordering you will be given indicative delivery times for each option.

Group Travelcards for London

Visiting London in a group of 10 or more? Buy in advance to save time and money

Group Day Travelcard valid on bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail and most National Rail services within London fare Zones 1 to 6.

Alternative tickets for groups that may be cheaper than Group Travelcards

There are three major features of the Group Travelcard that often means that even if you have a group of 10 or more it may be cheaper or more convenient to buy individual tickets for each member of the group.

- The cheapest and most popular Group Travelcard is for zones 1-6. Most visitors stay in a hotel in zones 1-2 and most attractions are also in zones 1-2. If you do not travel outside zones 1-3 it will be cheaper to buy an Oyster Card each instead.

- The Group Travelcard doesn't allow travel before 9.30am Monday to Friday. If you require to travel at these prohibited times then an individual Oyster Card or a 7 day Travelcard will be your best option.

- The Group Travelcard doesn't allow the Group to split up, they must all travel together, even though each person has individual tickets. If you require to split up your group when travelling then an individual Oyster Card or a 7 day Travelcard will be your best option.

Below are tables summarising fares and fare caps for individual travel passes for Oyster and Travelcards.

The fare caps are the most you can pay in a calendar day with Oyster. Once you hit that fare cap all travel for the rest of the day is free.

If you have a credit or debit card that supports contactless payment or have Apple Pay you can link these to Oyster fares.

Oyster Cards are cheaper than 1 day Travelcards but if you are travelling 5 or more days in any 7 then a 7 day Travelcard is normally cheaper than an Oyster Card.

10 Cypriots on Forbes 2024 billionaire list

T en people from Cyprus made it to the Forbes World’s Billionaires List for 2024, from industries ranging from shipping to real estate and software, as well as easyJet’s Haji-Ioannou family.

At 88th place, making him the top-ranking Cypriot on the list , is Vinod Adani with a net worth of $23 billion. Aged 75, Adani is named as residing in Dubai but has Cypriot citizenship .

The Adani group, which started out in commodities trading, has interests in ports, airports, power generation and transmission, green energy, among others.

John Fredriksen, active in the shipping industry is 79 and lives in London. His empire includes oil tankers, dry bulkers, LNG carriers and deepwater drilling rigs and has a net worth of $16.9bn, according to Forbes.

Other Cypriot passport holders named on the list are Yakir Gabay, Sergey Dmitriev, Valentin Kipyatkov, Igor Makarov and Vladimir Krupchak.

From the Haji-Ioannou family, Forbes list of billionaires named Polys, Stelios and Clelia.

Polys Haji-Ioannou ranks in 2287th place with a net worth of $1.3bn. Forbes said much of his wealth derives from a large stake in easyJet , the discount airline founded by his younger brother, Stelios.

Polys continues the family’s shipping legacy with his own 14-tanker fleet.

He has also invested heavily in both commercial and residential real estate, particularly in Cyprus, Greece, Monaco and London.

Stelios Haji-Ioannou was listed in 2410th place with a $1.2bn net worth. The son of a Greek Cypriot shipping magnate, Hajiioannou founded the budget airline easyJet in 1995 after leaving his father’s company.

Stelios owns an estimated 4 per cent of the airline ; his siblings Clelia and Polys both have large stakes as well, Forbes said.

Additionally, Clelia Haji-Ioannou owns approximately $240 million worth of real estate across Europe, including properties in London, Monaco and Greece. She ranks at 2545th place with a net value of $1.1bn.

She also has a gallery outside of Athens featuring artwork by Picasso, Warhol and Dali.

Here's who could be responsible for paying for the Baltimore bridge disaster

  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after a container ship collided with it.
  • Several entities could be on the hook to foot the bill in the aftermath of the disaster.
  • The maritime insurance industry will likely be saddled with the highest costs.

Insider Today

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed on Tuesday after a large container ship ran into it, leading to six presumed deaths and millions of dollars in possible damage.

It's still too early to estimate the total economic impact of the disaster, but between the cost of rebuilding the decades-old bridge, compensating the victims' families , and paying out damages for disruptions to the supply chain, the eventual cost of the disaster is expected to be significant.

Who will pay to rebuild the bridge?

President Joe Biden said on Tuesday the federal government should be responsible for paying to reconstruct the damaged Francis Scott Key Bridge.

"It is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect Congress to support my effort," Biden said.

The bridge was built in the 1970s for about $60 million, but the cost of rebuilding it could be 10 times its original price tag, an engineering expert told Sky News.

Baltimore is among the busiest ports in the nation , with more than a million shipping containers passing through each year. The collapse — which closed the port to all maritime and most road traffic until further notice — is already beginning to wreak havoc on the supply chain.

The cost of building the bridge back fast enough to offset diversions as much as possible could saddle the government with a more than $600 million bill, David MacKenzie, the chair of the engineering and architecture consultancy COWIfonden, told Sky News.

Who will pay for damages to the ship and its cargo?

The container ship, the Dali , is owned by a Singapore-based firm. The ship's charterer, Maersk, confirmed to Business Insider that vessel company Synergy Group operates the ship.

However, the companies with cargo aboard the Dali could ultimately be responsible for some of the ship's damages and cargo costs, according to Ryan Petersen , the CEO of the supply-chain-logistics company Flexport, which had two containers on the ship.

Related stories

The Dali was carrying 330 containers that must now be rerouted, Petersen said in an X thread.

An ancient maritime law known as " general average " dictates that companies with even a single container aboard a ship split certain damages pro rata based on the number of containers they had on board, ensuring all the stakeholders benefiting from the voyage are splitting the risk, Petersen said.

General average situations can occur when a ship is stranded or when cargo is damaged or thrown overboard to save the vessel, according to Flexport . The concept helps ensure that all parties who have a vested interest in the vessel share the cost and concern of protecting it.

It's too soon to know whether damages incurred to free the Dali in the coming days will qualify as a case of general average.

Who will pay for everything else?

The majority of the financial fallout is likely to lay primarily with the insurance industry, according to media reports.

Industry experts told the Financial Times that insurers could pay out losses for bridge damage, port disruption, and any loss of life.

The collapse could drive "one of the largest claims ever to hit the marine (re)insurance market," John Miklus, the president of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters, told Insurance Business.

He told the outlet that the loss of revenue from tolls while the bridge is being rebuilt will be expensive, as will any liability claims from deaths or injuries.

The Dali is covered by the Britannia Steam Ship Insurance Association Ltd., known as Britannia P&I Club, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

In a statement to Business Insider, Britannia said it was "working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally."

Britannia is one of 12 mutual insurers included in the International Group of P&I Clubs, which maintains more than $3 billion of reinsurance cover, sources familiar with the matter told Insurance Business.

Britannia itself is liable for the first $10 million in damages, both FT and Insurance Business reported. Whatever remains is dealt with by the wider mutual insurance group and Lloyd's of London, a reinsurance market in the UK, the FT reported.

Update: March 28, 2024 — This story has been updated to include additional information about general average and clarify that it is too soon to know whether general average will apply in the case of the Dali.

Israel-Gaza latest: IDF halts combat leave as Iran fears grow; UK breaking international law by arming Israel, Sunak told

Israel has halted combat leave, as fears grow of escalation in the Middle East after two Iranian generals were killed in Syria. In the UK, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been warned by former Supreme Court judges that continuing to sell arms to Israel could breach international law.

Israel has hinted that its probe into the airstrike that killed seven aid workers in Gaza could take weeks.

"In the coming weeks, as the findings become clear, we will be transparent and share the results with the public," Israeli government spokesperson Raquela Karamson said in a briefing.

Israel previously said the strikes were "a mistake that followed a misidentification".

By Ben van der Merwe, digital investigations journalist

During the first months of the war in Gaza, deaths were counted through a network of computers connecting morgues across the territory.

It was a system that, in the years beforehand, had won the trust of human rights groups, the UN and the World Health Organisation.

But amid repeated Israeli attacks on hospitals and chronic fuel shortages, this system has now effectively collapsed.

Of the eight major hospitals responsible for collating morgue data, just three are still providing information to the health ministry.

As a result, the morgue monitoring system is now only capturing a small fraction of deaths across the territory.

The weapons the UK supplies to Israel account for 0.02% of what the IDF actually uses, Sky News military analyst Sean Bell says.

The US is the top donor, providing about 68% of the Israeli military's total requirement, followed by Germany giving 28%, then Italy providing about 0.9%.

He said: "The US is the primary donor to Israel. Over the decades they have provided billions of dollars of aid, most recently $3bn.

"Washington has provided 25 joint strike fighters and 2,300 bombs in the most recent donation."

Bell explained that, by contrast, the latest "reliable" figures from 2022 show "the UK gave £42m worth of exports, which represents around 0.02% of what Israel actually uses, and about 0.4% of the UK's defence exports".

"These are relatively small numbers, but it is a point of principle that we are still providing weapons to Israel," he added.

"From a military perspective, even if other nations pull the plug, it's not going to have a material effect on Israel's military capability because the gaps can still be plugged by the US."

People in northern Gaza have been forced to survive on an average of 245 calories a day, according to Oxfam.

The charity says this amount of food represents "less than 12 per cent of the recommended daily 2,100 calorie intake needed per person".

The figure was calculated using demographic data taking into consideration age and gender variations.

Oxfam says 245 calories amounts to less than one can of fava beans a day.

For context, a 48g Snickers bar contains 248 calories.

The analysis is based on the latest available data used in the recent Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis for Gaza.

A mother in northern Gaza told the charity: "Before the war, we were in good health and had strong bodies.

"Now, looking at my children and myself, we have lost so much weight since we do not eat any proper food, we are trying to eat whatever we find - edible wild plants or herbs daily just to survive."

Oxfam's international executive director is accusing Israel of "making deliberate choices to starve civilians".

"Imagine what it is like, not only to be trying to survive on 245 calories day in, day out, but also having to watch your children or elderly relatives do the same," Amitabh Behar said.

"All whilst displaced, with little to no access to clean water or a toilet, knowing most medical support has gone and under the constant threat of drones and bombs."

A UN special rapporteur on human rights has told Sky News that Israel has not been taking "sufficient care in its targeting processes" in Gaza.

Professor Ben Saul said there was "genuine anger around the world" over the IDF strike which killed seven aid workers.

"It raises real questions because the Israelis knew this agency was operating in the area," he said

"This was a prearranged route. The vehicles were clearly marked, and Israel had all the information at its disposal to know that these people should not have been targeted."

Prof Saul also said the incident may amount to a war crime. Israel has argued that the airstrike was a mistake.

Discussing Israel's investigation into the incident, Prof Saul said it was obliged to investigate allegations of war crimes by its forces under international law, but that past probes into similar incidents have reduced international confidence in its impartiality.

He said: "The problem is that Israel has a long history of giving effective impunity to its own forces when serious allegations have been made in the past.

"Meaning either the investigations are not thorough or they do not lead to appropriate charges, or when charges are laid they result in light sentences.

"So it is no surprise that many people do not have confidence in Israeli investigations."

Israel is "absolutely not" in breach of international humanitarian law, former home secretary Suella Braverman has said.

Ms Braverman, on a visit to the country, told the BBC the suggestion was "absurd" and "an insult to Israel".

She said Israel was going "above and beyond the necessary requirements to ensure that civilian casualties are limited, to ensure that aid is received onto the Gaza Strip and distributed".

"I have seen evidence myself, in terms of very up-to-date photographic evidence, of plentiful food packages and trucks of food, water and medicines getting to the people of Gaza."

The UK is breaching international law by continuing to arm Israel, Rishi Sunak has been warned.

Three former Supreme Court justices are among over 600 lawyers and academics who have signed a 17-page letter to warn the present situation in Gaza is "catastrophic".

The letter warns that - given the International Court of Justice's opinion that there is a plausible risk of genocide - the UK government is legally obliged to act in preventing it.

The signatories said: "While we welcome the increasingly robust calls by your government for a cessation of fighting and the unobstructed entry to Gaza of humanitarian assistance, simultaneously to continue... the sale of weapons and weapons systems to Israel... falls significantly short of your government's obligations under international law."

Israel should apologise and pay compensation to the family of the Pole who was killed during an IDF airstrike in Gaza, Poland's prime minister has said.

"We will expect... an immediate explanation of the circumstances and compensation for the victims' relatives," Donald Tusk told a news conference.

Damian Sobol, 36, from the Polish city of Przemysl, had spent the past six months in Gaza after working across the globe on aid missions.

Marta Wilczynska, of the Free Place Foundation, met and worked with Mr Sobol after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

He spoke English well and was a translator, and he was a skilled manager, she said.

"Always smiling, always so helpful, he loved this job. I felt I had a brother in him," she added.

"He was a really extraordinary guy. We were very proud of him."

More than 33,037 Palestinians have been killed and 75,668 have been injured since 7 October, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said in a statement on Thursday.

Some 62 Palestinians were killed and 91 injured in the past 24 hours, the ministry added.

The Israeli offensive in Gaza began following a terrorist attack by Hamas on 7 October which killed 1,200 people and saw 253 taken hostage.

Around 130 are believed to still be in captivity.

Former chief of the general staff General Lord Dannatt has told Sky News that Israel is "really in the dock" over the airstrike which killed seven aid workers in Gaza.

"There are mistakes and there are mistakes," he said.

"I wasn't there. I didn't see what was going on, but all the evidence I have heard says to me that this was a systematic attack on those three cars, one after the other, conducted by a drone.

"It was probably being operated by a person who could see what was going on.

"They say that one of the people in that group was a suspected terrorist - well, there was a Palestinian, but just because he was Palestinian doesn't mean he was a potential terrorist.

"It's things like this which put the Israelis on the wrong side of the moral argument and if we support them unconditionally, it puts us on the wrong side of the moral argument as well."

The former general went on to say that the fact that the cars were clearly marked as aid vehicles should have been sufficient protection.

"But I think three successive attacks some distance apart suggests it was not simply an error or a bomb that went in the wrong direction," he added

"This was clinical targeting to exterminate that whole team.

"I'm afraid Israel is really in the dock as far as this one is concerned, and that's why it is really important if they want to exonerate themselves they have a transparent investigation and publish the results of that.

"And if someone made a mistake, a deliberate mistake, then they should be punished according to IDF regulations."
