Grand Teton and Yellowstone Horse Pack Trips

Explore the west in a whole new way. book a teton horse pack trip today. located between jackson hole and yellowstone national park..

We invite you to take part in a Western experience that not many have the privilege to see. Teton Horseback Adventures offers 3 to 6 Day Guided Horse Pack Trips into the Greater Teton and Yellowstone backcountry.

Our family heritage consists of six generations  riding and working the Teton mountains and are one of the few local families still left here in the Jackson Hole area. We offer professionalism and experience to meet your expectations and create memories that will last forever.

WE DO NOT LEASE HORSES!   This is the secret to our amazing safety record. Each horse has his or her own personality, and matching these personalities between horse and rider make all the difference. We own around 150 head of horses and mules, many of which we’ve raised and trained ourselves.   So you can be assured they know what they’re doing (and yes we know every one of their names).

A few reasons why you should choose Teton Horseback Adventures:

  • A family run business
  • Private groups or small mixed groups never exceeding 6-8 total
  • Experienced horses, crew, and dog (Penelope loves working the livestock)
  • NOTHING BEATS THE TETONS

“ Packhorse Week of Discovery ”

Reviewed august 19, 2014, i chose outfitter heith hill because i didn’t just want to take a trail ride in the teton wilderness (don’t get me wrong, they do great trail rides too.), i wanted a wilderness adventure and by god he delivered just that. for five days, he took us with a string of pack mules and horses across countless streams, meadows, and through mountain passes with views so spectacular not even a camera can capture the full awesome beauty of it all. each night we dined by an open campfire and the next morning struck out on the trail to another destination more breathtaking than the last. at one point, we were in the most remote location in all of the lower 48 states. nowhere else could i have safely enjoyed the pleasure and experience of refilling my drink bottle from spring-fed mountain streams. before this, i have always looked at pictures and read about such scenic vistas as this but seeing unspoiled country firsthand like this was far grander than i had ever imagined. teton horseback adventures is the real thing. if you want to discover some of the beauty and wonder explorers like bridger, powell, and mountain men and trappers extolled there was to see out west then the teton wilderness trip is what you want to plan for. it’s the journey of a lifetime.                                                                                        this review is the subjective opinion of a tripadvisor member and not of tripadvisor llc..

Scenic Horse Pack Trips

Scenic Horse Pack Trips

We offer guided scenic horse pack trips into the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Outfitted with gentle horses and experienced guides, our guests venture into the vast, untouched wilderness of the Bob Marshall Complex for one of the great adventures the West has to offer. At the end of a 28-mile trail ride into the wilderness, our base camp awaits at the edge of a beautiful mountain stream and is just a short walk away from the legendary fishing opportunities of the South Fork of the Flathead River.

Scenic Horse Pack Trip Itinerary

The first day of the trip you will arrive at the Holland Lake Trailhead or Meadow Creek Trailhead, depending on where we are starting off the trip. Once we meet you, we will introduce you to your horse and get your saddle adjusted to your individual needs. We will show you a few tips on how to ride and direct your horse and try to have everyone on the trail by 8:30am. The ride into Holbrook basecamp is 25 miles from Meadow Creek Trailhead and 28 miles from Holland Lake Trailhead.

Once at camp you can cool down with fresh mountain spring water, enjoy some appetizers, read a book in the shade of the camp hammock, toss some horseshoes or get settled into your wall tent and then freshen up for a home cooked dinner around our long family-style table in the cook tent.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW thumb 309d

Wake up to fresh coffee and homemade breakfast. Then pack a lunch for your outing later that day. Take the second day to relax and rejuvenate close to camp, where you can fish the South Fork or White River easily within walking distance from camp, swim in many of the deep holes, or stretch out after the long ride in. Horses can be made available for you if you wish to fish further from camp or do one of the many side trips to see the awesome sights of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW thumb 2f8c

The rest of the trip will be tailored to your interests and can include:

  • A spectacular day ride to the largest lake in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Big Salmon Lake, where you can fish, cool off, or even swim with our horses in the lake
  • An unforgettable ride up to view the Chinese Wall

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW thumb 2f91

  • Day trip options to the top of various mountain peaks for spectacular views (Charlotte, Scar Face, Turtle Mountain, Rampart, etc.)
  • A day float on small one-person rafts that we can pack up river to the Bartlett Creek area and you can float and fish your way back to Holbrook
  • A day float from Holbrook down river to Big or Little Salmon creeks, where we would meet up with a horse and a pack animal to bring you back to camp

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW thumb 2ff4

Back at camp we will serve you appetizers and a delicious dinner. After dinner you can sit around the campfire and listen to stories and play campfire games.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW thumb 316b

We have an early breakfast and pack up all of your gear and prepare for the ride back to the trailhead. We will be arriving at the trail head around mid-afternoon. We always love to see your pictures, so please send them to us so that we can share them on our sites.

Testimonials

When I was looking for a great trip and adventure for my 40th birthday, I knew that I wanted something special and unique. A Montana wilderness trip with my college buddies was something that I always dreamed about. 406 Wilderness Outfitters and the Cheff family created an awesome experience for my group in the Bob Marshall wilderness. The experience was a once in lifetime, some of the best views and landscapes that this country has to offer. 406 Wilderness Outfitters helped me check this off my bucket list.
What a fabulously memorable trip!!! My husband, two daughters ages 12 & 14 and I recently took a week long trip into the Bob Marshall Wilderness with the assistance of 406 Wilderness Outfitters. As a family, we spend a fair share of time enjoying the outdoors of Montana. I can honestly say, this was the most memorable and seamless of all trips thanks to the unique and family- friendly service the Cheff’s provide.

Operating in the Bob Marshall Wilderness since 1932.

Montana Wilderness Horseback Pack Trips

guided horse pack trips

Why Choose a Wilderness Pack Trip?

Ride into the backcountry and embrace the ultimate calm and pristine beauty of the wilderness. Our guides, camp jacks, and camp cooks take care of the packing, set up, and chores associated with camp life and horse care. This leaves you to let all your cares melt away as you enjoy life’s simple pleasures and the blessings of mother nature. Travel by horseback is a deep-rooted piece of American heritage.

For most folks, the wilderness is no longer accessible as they are born into and wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of city life. For some even, the idea of entering the wilderness is intimidating. This is where Swan Mountain Outfitters comes in- we are passionate about providing all folks (even beginners!) a route into the wilderness in a way that showcases its rugged beauty and builds a new rapport with nature. We believe the more people who can share this experience, the better chance America’s lands have of being protected for future generations to enjoy, appreciate, and get back to their roots.

“Your staff was excellent and the camp comfortable. I felt safe at all times. The food was tasty and plentiful. I not only had a great time but learned a great deal about everything from horses and mules to fishing, hunting and just plain sightseeing and relaxing. The trip was so perfect I cannot stop talking about it! -Howard Pyles”

What to Expect on Our Wilderness Pack Trips

Your trip begins in Northwest Montana’s Swan Valley . An often-overlooked gem, the Swan Valley has all the beauty of glacier country, but is nestled quietly apart from the nearby big attractions of Flathead Lake, Glacier National Park, and the big city of Missoula.

From our “base camp” in the Swan Valley, you’ll greet your guides and they’ll begin packing up your duffel onto mules. Our guides will match you to a mountain savvy trail horse and provide some basic horsemanship instruction. Group sizes tend to be six to eight guests, so unless you’ve got a private pack trip, there may be some new faces to greet too. You’ll then hit the trail and make the 14 mile journey following Lion Creek up from the valley floor to our “upper camp” which rests just on the very border of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Upper camp, being 14 miles from the nearest road, electricity, or plumbing, offers a quiet and serene camping setting. Camp is located right on the bank of Lion Creek, and although there is no fishing allowed in the creek you are more than welcome to jump in and cool off! Breakfast and dinner are served family style in the cook tent, while lunch is enjoyed on your daily excursion. You will stay in wall tents (large canvas tents that a person can stand and move about easily inside) with cots and foam mattress’s await you for a good night’s sleep. There is a shower tent in which you can enjoy a hot shower from heated creek water, and two latrines just out of camp for privacy.

Daily Excursions

The next morning, awaken to birds chirping and head to the cook tent to get a hot cup of coffee. After a hot breakfast and some time to gather your things for the day, you’ll get back on your horse and hit the trail!

The Bob Marshall Wilderness: The beautiful Bob is hard to beat! There are endless views and several mountain lakes to fish at and enjoy. To get there you will leave camp and continue up the trail to Lion Creek pass. The pass into the Bob is 9 tight switchbacks over a mountain ridge, but have no fear! Your horse has been doing this all summer, most have been at it for years and know how to keep you safe. Please note that as this trail is so steep we must walk back down the switchbacks. Once at the bottom of the switchbacks you may get back on your horse and continue the ride back to camp.

Swan Ridge: This adventure features beautiful views and quite often mountain goats! You will enjoy a different trail that takes you up to a high mountain ridge awash with wildflowers. You can either go for a short walk to enjoy the views or push yourself and reach up to 9’000 feet in elevation! This trail is also quite steep and will require walking down as well. This gives you time to truly enjoy your surroundings and pick as many huckleberries as you would like!

No matter where the day takes you, you’ll return to upper camp each night. Having a home base like this is a great advantage to be able to explore at your own pace each day, and, you only have to unpack your duffel once!

On your last day, we will enjoy breakfast around 8:00AM, after which you will hand your packed duffel to the packers. While they get the mules ready enjoy a cup of coffee and say goodbye to beautiful upper camp! Once the packers head out it will be your turn to mount up and ride back to civilization.

About the 'Bob'

Named after an early forester and conservationist, the Bob Marshall Wilderness is over 1.5 million acres of roadless terrain, leaving it as one of the most completely preserved mountain ecosystems in the world. It contains the kind of wilderness most people can only imagine; rugged peaks, alpine lakes, grassy meadows, shimmering streams, and big river valleys.

The Wilderness runs for 60 miles along the Continental Divide, with elevations ranging from 4,000 feet to more than 9,000 feet. A huge escarpment called the Chinese Wall highlights the Bob's vast beauty, with an average height of more than 1,000 feet and a length of 22 miles.

With more than 1,000 miles of a well-developed trail system, the 'Bob' is prime location for horse back and mule-pack trips. It s array of wildlife also allows for trophy fishing and hunting trips, all of which are available through Bob Marshall Wilderness Outfitters!

Bob Marshall Wilderness Outfitters is owned and operated by Trent Osburn. Trent is a native to Montana and has ample experience in the backcountry. Growing up hunting with his dad and brothers, and outfitting prior to buying Bob Marshall Wilderness Outfitters, Trent has the expertise and knowledge to guide you through the trip of a lifetime in the most unforgettable way possible.

Browsing Wilderness Pack Trips

Travel on horseback with pack animals to carry the baggage is the purest form of the riding tour.  you aren’t even depending on vehicles to move your luggage. there is something appealing about the complete independence one has from the civilized world when traveling with pack animals in a wilderness area. .

One of the most attractive aspects of a pack trip for horse lovers is that you are living with your equine companion 24 hours a day. This was how the first Europeans moved through the Rocky Mountain area and it is how our ancestors used to travel in Europe and Asia since the dawn of recorded history.  Wheeled vehicles did not cross the Continental Divide until 1827 when they first made a wagon track across South Pass to supply the mountain men in their famous rendezvous beside Bear Lake in Utah. Before that pack horses had to be used.

Today there are vast wilderness areas in the Rockies , the southwest and the Andes, where pack trips are still popular and necessary to visit these remote places comfortably.  Our Wyoming ranch borders the Yellowstone Ecosystem which is the largest area still protected from development left in the lower 48 states.  It is still the kingdom of wild animals and one often sees deer, elk, moose and bighorn sheep. At night you can sometimes hear the electrifying howl of wolves or the higher pitched cry of coyotes.  You traverse passes high above timberline and descend into valleys following small streams which eventually make their way thousands of miles later to the Gulf of Mexico.

The Grand Canyon Winter Pastures Ride is a unique pack trip which descends on steep trails deep into the Grand Canyon from the rarely visited north rim.  As you drop down off the rim you are well sheltered from the cold winds above and you enter a much warmer micro climate which is pleasant even in winter. Crossing the Andes between Argentina and Chile also takes you over vertiginous passes where you can sometimes see the mighty Andean condor with a wing span of ten feet swooping low over the peaks.

Loading pack animals for wilderness travel is an ancient art and it is vital that this be done properly for the success of a trip.  You will learn to appreciate the strength and endurance of the pack horses as they carry your food and equipment over the steep mountain trails. You can read about packing horses in the heart-warming story of SERGEANT RECKLESS and the classical book by Joe Back, HORSES, HITCHES AND ROCKY TRAILS, often considered the packer’s bible. One thing you can count on is that pack trips in the wilderness will always be an adventure and unexpected things are sure to happen. What is Wilderness?

The Great Bear Wilderness was set aside by the Federal Government in 1978, linking the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Glacier National Park, to be maintained as closely as possible as an untamed frontier. No motorized or mechanical vehicles, including bicycles and wheels, are allowed. All travel is by foot or horseback, with the exception of a backcountry airstrip at Schafer Meadows Ranger Station. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex (including the Bob Marshall, the Scapegoat and the Great Bear Wilderness areas) totals over 1.5 million acres on both sides of the Continental Divide. Snowy Springs operates mostly in the Great Bear Wilderness under permits issued by the USDA Forest Service. The Wilderness Act limits the number of guests we can escort through this unique area.

Just off Highway 2 at between Mile Marker 190 and 191, our Base Camp is nestled between Glacier National Park to the north and the Great Bear Wilderness to the south. We are at the southern end of a small mountain valley that was once the home of McCarthyville, a rough and rowdy frontier railroad town from 1890-1892. At its peak the town was home to 32 saloons and more than 1000 people. Two years later it was gone.

Located on approximately 100 acres, our Base Camp includes our main residence and shop as well as two vacation rental cabins and numerous out buildings. The American West is alive in the large arena, horse corrals and two creeks that run through the property.

Most summer evenings we practice for rodeos or other horse events in the arena. The public is welcome to stop by. During summer months, there is a local rodeo in Columbia Falls at the Blue Moon on Thursdays which our crew enters as often as possible. The rodeo schedule can be found at Brash Rodeo, Kalispell on Facebook.

Our Base Camp is 38 miles east of West Glacier and 18 miles west of East Glacier. The Flathead Valley is accessible by air to Glacier International Airport (current airlines: Horizon/Alaska, Skywest/Delta, United, Allegient), by rail (Amtrak), and by auto (US Highway 93 and US Highway 2).  You may also fly into Great Falls International Airport (Alaska, Allegient, Delta, United). There is also the option of flying directly into the backcountry at Schafer Meadows via bush plane.

The efficiency and organization of your wilderness camp to include your guides and cook proved to be amazing. The opportunities for game and the challenges of the Bob Marshall and Great Bear Wilderness are something that everyone in camp will remember for a lifetime.

Guided Pack Trips

Summer fishing/horseback trips.

Our summer trips go into the Flattops Wilderness area near Devil’s Causeway and the China Wall (8-11,000 ft.). It offers spectacular mountain scenery, alpine meadows with abundant wildflowers, a wide variety of birds and wildlife and many lakes and streams with lots of native trout.

Experience the beauty and splendor of northwestern Colorado. Our pack trips and trail rides will take you into remote wilderness areas. You can photograph unbelievable scenery and observe wildlife in its natural state … or just relax and enjoy the blue skies and starry nights of Colorado. These horseback adventures will provide a lifetime of memories.

We will make every effort to arrange a summer pack trip for you that will fit your desired dates.

Our summer wilderness pack or pack fishing trips and our trail rides are designed for people and/or families who really want to get away from it all and experience the beauty and tranquility of nature’s high country playgrounds. The vegetation and wild-life are unequaled, fishing is excellent, meals are superb and the entire trip is fun for all.

Flattops Wilderness Area

This is one of Colorado’s true wilderness areas. It’s located in the southern section of the Routt National Forest at elevations that range from 8,000 to over 11,000 feet. No motorized vehicles of any kind are allowed in wilderness areas. Travel is by foot or on horseback. Day temperatures range from 70 to 95 degrees, while nights are chilly, with temperatures averaging between 30 and 50 degrees. Rain showers and thunderstorms are common and occasionally, we experience hail or a snowstorm. We go prepared for it all.

A leisurely two-hour horseback ride from the trailhead brings you to our base camp. It’s nestled among the pines next to a clear, mountain stream. Days consist of riding (or hiking) to Devils Causeway or China Wall, to one of the mountain lakes, or to one of the larger streams for picnicking or fishing. You can just sit around camp and kick back, pitch horseshoesand fish right from camp. Evenings we like to relax – sitting around an open campfire and watching the heavens so full of stars and oh… so close.

Fishing is very good – primarily Cutthroat Trout, a few Brook Trout and an occasional Golden Trout – up to 3 lbs. – flies and worms work best (some lures).

Riding back to Horsfeld

Horse Pack Trips

An enjoyable way to travel the backcountry.

Summer Horse Pack Trips

Our Gold Rush Pack Trips are catered to the experienced riders who want to delve into the skill and passion of horseback riding. This trip will guide you through some of the most remote terrain and extensive scenery this country has left to roam. Invest in the opportunity to learn how to pack a horse and set up camp like the Klondike Gold Rushers from a century ago, and experience the peace and beauty of your surroundings with exceptional service and guides. These adventures, whether you choose the six day pack trip or the extended twelve day trip will give you a chance to be part of a way of life that in Alaska still says frontier.

The richness in this part of Alaska is in the diversity of the peaks and the wildlife that roams. The trip starts in Horsfeld, a remote guest camp nestled in the Nutzotins. The Nutzotin mountains are an older range that border the Wrangells and are defined by volcanic history and flattop peaks. As we travel up the valley bottom of beaver creek we can hope to spot the abundance within wildlife terrain: moose, caribou, black bear, grizzly bear, grayling; and an entourage of alpine songbirds, white crowned sparrows, varied thrushes, yellow warblers and more. Each drainage we pass is featured by the distinctive carvings of the creeks contrasted against the ruggedness of the rocky vistas to each side. Glaciated peaks and rivers meet us half way into our journey as we ride through and along the White River to Russell Glacier. This day provides some of the most incredible big mountain shots of the trip. With over 12,000 feet of elevation Mt. Nazahat, Sulzer and Bona will amaze you. Look out for lupine, fireweed, monks hood and wild roses along the trail, and learn to identify and use some of the delicacies of the Boreal tundra. Come open your heart and eyes to the fullness of this exclusive trip.

Come join us for a wild ride in a peaceful setting for our 2017 Gold Rush Horse Pack Trip!
