Located on the pristine western shores of Lynn Canal on Alaska’s northern Inside Passage , America’s longest fjord, Haines is home to 1,700 year-round residents. Here you’ll find a perfectly distilled sampling of Alaska’s history, scenic beauty, wildlife, arts and culture. The village was named Haines in honor of Mrs. F. E. Haines, secretary of the Presbyterian home mission board, who had raised funds for the mission. In 1904, Fort William Seward played a key role in the construction of the Haines and Alaska Highways during World War II. The historic buildings in Haines are now private homes, hotels, bed & breakfast lodgings and shops.

Haines, Alaska
With a population approximately 2000, Haines qualifies as a “small town”. But honestly, it’s more than that. It’s simply an awesome small town.
Haines is also often called the Adventure Capital of Alaska. Visitors and residents alike enjoy all kinds of fun stuff, rafting the Chilkat River, heli-skiing the Takshanuk and Chilkat Mountains outside of town, or exploring the region on foot.
For me, photographing the most famous of resident, the American Bald Eagle is what brings me here most often.
Haines is also home to a surprisingly large community of artist. What small town of 2000 people do you know of with over 20 published authors residing there? it’s a vibrant little town that I fall a little deeper in love with every time I return.
Haines Trips
Bald Eagle Photo Tour
An American icon. Thousands of them. Bring Your Camera. Or Two.
On a scale of 1 – 5, five being the most challenging, one boot is appealing. Basically it means “You got this” .
1 boot = basecamp/dayhike easy 2 boots = easier backpacking trip 3 boots = intermediate level trip 4 boots = intermediate to advanced backpacking 5 boots = ask yourself are you really ready for this?
Expect whatever level you think might best fit you to be one level LOWER on our scale. Hiking here in Alaska is generally a step or three above what you’ll find in the Lower 48 states.
One boot is about as easy as we do here in Alaska. That doesn’t mean it’s easy; you’re carrying gear, and even on a basecamp trip you’ll find expending some effort required of you. And there is always the weather or some other adversarial element to contend with.
What you won’t find on a single-boot-rated trip is the difficult terrain challenges we see on our other ventures. No glacial moraines to deal with, or alder and muskeg, or sidehills to wreak havoc on your ankles hours on end.
Great option for starters, the older or the younger folks who want to see some astonishing remote wild country, without all the rigors or the more common backpacking adventures we undertake. You’ll love it.
Enjoy Your Trip

Excursion Overview
Float down the scenic chilkat river through the famous chilkat bald eagle preserve.
Upon arrival in Haines, meet your expert guide and enjoy a riverside drive along the Haines Highway. The drive is incredibly scenic: glacier-clad mountains thrust to the sky, colorful wildflowers line the road, green riverside channels provide habitat for moose, bear, and trumpeter swans. The highway was declared a National Scenic Byway in 2009. Arrive at the river in the heart of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, approximately 40 minutes away. After boarding your raft, enjoy a scenic float down the Chilkat River through the famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, home of the world's largest concentration of Bald Eagles. You are immersed in the Alaskan wilderness, floating the silent river. As there are no rapids (white water) on the river, it makes for a very relaxing float. Depending on the flow of the river, the float portion lasts about 1 1/2 hours. Along the way, your professional guide will explain the natural history of the area, Chilkat Indian Heritage, and share some exciting stories from life in the Alaskan wilderness. The number of eagles you will see is dependent on the food available to the eagles (i.e. the fish runs). During the early months of the summer season, you will often see parent eagles sitting on nests, eaglets in nests, and the parent eagles flying to the nest with food for their young. Thousands of bald eagles travel here to feed on salmon in the fall and winter. During very warm days, the eagles are often seen catching the thermals and soaring above the mountain peaks. Paddling is not required, as your expert guide will push the raft along, explaining the intricate balance of nature that makes this a unique and special place. Don't leave your camera behind for this adventure! After rafting, enjoy a picnic lunch on your way back to Haines.

Great guides, Russ, Steven and Ashley. One of our rafts got stuck on the river bank due to a windstorm that came up. The guides handled that efficiently and it was all a fun adventure. And we saw bald eagles!

We went to the other side of the Skagway fjord to the old Dyea site. Our guide, Dale, knew where the bald eagles hung out and we lucked out with two sitting up in a tree as we arrived. And then we saw two more over in the river and another two - all three breeding pairs in the area. Absolutely incredible photos! And the rest of the tour wasn't inconsequential - the Golden Staircase entrance to the Chillcoot Trail and a visit to the old town of Dyea. A great afternoon and great photos to remember it by. - kaceykorting 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Simply breathtaking!! This was the best excursion. All of my friends booked the train excursion and it sold out. So I found this and it was beyond my expectations! Christine was so sweet and helpful but was so considerate to some travelers that were frazzled. My guide was Dale. Not only was he so sweet but as a professional photographer he gave all of us tips and tricks. We got to make a handful of stops along the way and see way more than I could have anticipated. The suspension bridge is breathtaking and gave views for miles! I would recommend this trip to anyone! Read more Written September 24, 2023
- 2011Iris 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles *Must do* tour in Skagway! Our excellent guide was Paul, a friendly photographer who was knowledgeable about the area and its history, shared interesting anecdotes, and gave us ample time to take in the breathtaking views of the increadibly beautiful landscape above Skagway. The tour in a comfortable van took us to the suspension bridge, which in itself is interesting but certainly not the major draw. The area around it and the river banks boasted vibrant fall colors, with a backdrop of fresh snow on the mountains around it. We fell in love with the area and hope to be back! - islandlovingtwosome 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Except For The Suspension Bridge, It Was Just A Long Uneventful Drive This could have been a great tour if our tour operator did his job. Holden was nice enough, but apparently he is bored with his job and just wanted the tour to be over. I chose this tour because there were supposed to be many stops with an opportunity to see new and different things. Holden only made two short stops and the suspension bridge. Thank goodness for our time at the suspension bridge otherwise the entire tour would have been a bust. After the suspension bridge, Holden sped, and I do mean sped, all the way back to port without any other stops. I felt cheated expecting to see so much more than I did. - D5808BBchristopherp 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome!!! If I could give Dale more than 5 stars I would. Dale went above and beyond for our group. He took us places at times he knew the sun would be in the perfect position and helped with and questions I had. He showed me a few things I didn’t know how to do. I would do this again in a heartbeat if I knew I was going with Dale!! Read more Written September 22, 2023

- Explorer34318105894 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great photography/history tour of Skagway Dale, our guide was very knowledgeable and excited to share the history and nature of Skagway with us. The weather was pouring rain but we still saw eagles, lots of wild mushrooms, and the different areas round Skagway. Dale show all of us how to better use our cameras and how to set up and get great pictures. Great tour!!! Read more Written September 19, 2023
