Are You a Potterhead? Here Are 7 Filming Locations You Can Visit

It’s hard to think of another literary franchise that has had as much of an impact on modern pop culture as Harry Potter has. At more than 500 million copies sold , it’s the best-selling book series of all time. The seven novels that comprise Harry Potter eventually became eight wildly successful movies (the last book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , was split into two films) that raked in a total of $7.7 billion in ticket sales.

But if there’s anything more magical than the actual story line of the series, it’s the filming locations that helped bring Harry’s fictional, fantasy-tinged version of the United Kingdom and Ireland to life. From the Warner Bros. Studio lot in London to the halls of Oxford, here are seven filming locations featured in the Harry Potter films that you can visit.

1. Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

Location: Leavesden, Watford, England

For the 10 years that the Harry Potter film series was in production, it was lensed at a studio in Watford, a small town northwest of London. At this Warner Bros. Studio , visitors can see iconic sets like the Forbidden Forest, Hogwarts’ Great Hall, and Diagon Alley. There are also numerous props to see, including 950 potion jars from Professor McGonagall’s potion classroom, 900 memory vials from Dumbledore’s office (each with a hand-designed label), and cat portraits that once hung in Dolores Umbridge’s office. The Hogwarts locomotive that transported thousands of students to and from Hogwarts is also on display. After fans are done perusing all the exhibits, there are no less than three different souvenir shops to pick up things like replica wands, Harry Potter –themed candy, and stuffed toy owls. Tickets start at $55 per person .

A cloister of Durham Cathedral

In addition to being a Harry Potter filming location, Durham Cathedral is also an UNESCO World Heritage site.

2. Durham Cathedral

Location: Durham, England

You may recognize Durham Cathedral from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone , the first in the film series. In between classes, Harry, Ron, and Hermione walk through Hogwarts’ halls—in real life, those halls were actually the elegant cloisters of Durham Cathedral, constructed during the 11th and early 12th centuries to house the bones of Saint Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede. A set recreation of Durham Cathedral was built for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and used in the scene where Harry frees Dobby the house elf with a sock. The chapter house (a building used in cathedrals to hold official meetings) was also used in the first two movies to represent Professor McGonagall’s office.

Durham Cathedral is more than a Harry Potter filming location: It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered the best and biggest example of Norman architecture in England. Additionally, it’s the oldest surviving building with a large-scale, stone-vaulted ceiling. Entry to the cathedral is free, though visitors are encouraged to leave a $5 donation to support the church and its grounds.

Interior of Bodleian Old Library in Oxford

Duke Humfrey’s Library stood in for the Restricted Section of the Hogwarts Library.

3. Oxford’s Bodleian Libraries

Location: Oxford, England

Oxford University’s Bodleian Libraries are among the most famous in the world because of their collection of books (more than 12 million printed items , including rare manuscripts and classical papyri) and storied buildings, some in continuous use since the Middle Ages. And with its severe architecture, the Bodleian Old Library seems like an obvious choice to represent the Restricted Section of the Hogwarts Library. When Harry wears his invisibility cloak to enter the Restricted Section in Sorcerer’s Stone (in the hopes of finding information on the mysterious Nicolas Flamel), he’s really skulking through Duke Humfrey’s Library, a reading room within the Bodleian Old Library. Travelers must purchase a ticket to the Bodleian Library and Radcliffe Camera tour (which start at $11 a person) to visit the premises.

The grass-covered grounds of Alnwick Castle

The scenes where Harry first learns to fly were filmed on the grounds of Alnwick Castle.

4. Alnwick Castle

Location: Alnwick, Northumberland, England

In the first two Harry Potter films, Alnwick Castle in Northumberland stood in for exterior shots of Hogwarts Castle. You might recognize the outer bailey as the place where Harry first learned to fly, and the inner bailey as the spot where he and Ron crash landed the Weasley’s flying car. In reality, Alnwick is more than 950 years old and is the second largest inhabited castle in the U.K. Since its construction in 1309, the building has also served as a temporary shelter, a military outpost, and a teaching college. Alnwick Castle is currently temporarily closed but is set to reopen again on March 31. Tickets start at $21 per person.

Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross Station

At Platform 9 3/4 in King’s Cross Station, Harry Potter fans can find a trolley that’s partially embedded in the wall.

5. King’s Cross Station

Location: London, England

Remember that magical moment in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone when Harry watches Ron disappear through a wall at Platform 9 ¾ in King’s Cross station? That scene really occurred at the busy train station, and fans can visit the site where filming took place. A luggage trolley is embedded in the wall where Platform 9 ¾ should be so that visitors can pose with it. Nearby, fans can find the Harry Potter Shop , which sells things like recreations of Ollivander’s wands, time turners, and Hogwarts robes.

Glenfinnan Railway Viaduct in Scotland with the Jacobite steam train passing over

In real life, the dreamy Hogwarts Express is the Jacobite steam train.

6. The Jacobite steam train

Location: Tom-na-Faire Station, Scotland

Sure there are soul-sucking demons, screaming mandrakes, and devices that enable people to time travel in the Harry Potter universe, but is there anything more magical in the entire series than the train ride Harry and his friends take from King’s Cross Station to their school? In real life, the Hogwarts Express is the Jacobite steam train , owned by West Coast Railways. The 84-mile round trip takes travelers through some of Scotland’s most scenic landscapes, including Loch Morar, the deepest freshwater loch in Europe; Fort William, the largest town in the Scottish Highlands; and the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct, made famous in the Harry Potter films.

Ireland's Cliffs of Moher during a storm

The place where Dumbledore and Harry search for Slytherin’s Locket is actually Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher.

7. Cliffs of Moher

Location: Liscannor, County Clare, Ireland

In Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (the sixth installment of the franchise), Harry and Dumbledore travel to a remote cave located on a rocky coast—hinted to be the shore of Germany—in search of Slytherin’s locket, one of Voldemort’s horcruxes. In reality, the craggy coastline and caves featured in the movie are actually Ireland’s legendary Cliffs of Moher, which are known for their dramatic vertical profile. This filming location was also featured in The Princess Bride and Leap Year . The easiest way to see the Cliffs is to travel to Liscannor village in Ireland where admission can be purchased for $7 (tickets are available online as well).

Fact: In my entire life, I’ve only cried once at a tourist attraction.

And judge me all you want, but this cryfest happened at a Harry Potter studio tour.

… Allow me to explain myself.

Like most children born in the 90s, much of my youth was spent daydreaming about the arrival of my Hogwart’s acceptance letter. As this dream dwindled with the hardships of adulting, I instead took comfort in carbs and magical movie marathons.

But, it didn’t take much for these childhood dreams to resurface. A trip to London was all it took to re-open the floodgates (literally).

Let me tell you: for a Harry Potter fan, there is no attraction on this Earth more overwhelming and amazing than the  Warner Bros Studio Tour London, (AKA London’s Harry Potter set tour), which brings you through the filming site for all 8 movies in the Harry Potter franchise.

In addition to sets, you’re also shown countless props, the best gift shop in the world, and even a chance to taste butter beer for yourself. Come on now, is it at all a surprise that I bawled when I got to the end?

Read onwards for important info to know about the tour, some tips to keep in mind and of course, a recap of the experience (with plenty of photos!) Be careful for this section, as spoilers are abound!

Basic information to know about the Harry Potter Set Tour

If you’re interested in booking the epic Warner Bros Studio Tour in London for yourself, then here are some basic must-knows.

Harry Potter Studio Tour Tickets Info:

I first visited this attraction in 2014 and it was a hot mess then, and has only grown in popularity in the past few years.

If this Harry Potter set tour is a must-do for you, then make sure you book your tickets WELL in advance or you risk not being able to go!

Luckily, even when tickets are sold out on the main site, there are tours you can book online that will have tickets available for sold out dates.

Sometimes, booking with a tour is worthwhile because you not only guarantee your tickets, you also get the convenience of private transport there, which is nice and much less stressful than using public transport yourself.

Here is a breakdown of different Harry Potter Studio tour options that include transport. For your convenience, I also lay out their costs and what they have to offer:

Tickets can also be purchased online from the studio itself  here.

How to Get to the Warner Bros Studio Tour in London:

Despite its name, the Warner Bros Studio London is actually located in Leavesden, which is northwest of London.

While booking a tour/private transport is the easiest and most convenient way to get there, it is still quite painless to reach via public transit, as a shuttle bus runs from Watford Junction railway station.

To get to the Watford Junction station, you need to make use of London’s overground system.

Not sure about the best route to get there? Check out this handy trip planner .  The tour’s website recommends that you arrive at Watford Junction 45 minutes prior to your tour time.

Remember to bring change, as the cost for the shuttle bus is 2 pounds each way.

NOTE : Leave a lot of leeway for you to get there. We definitely got lost a few times due to the transfers, and were stressed to the max! For a more stress-free experience, consider prebooking a tour that comes with transport. Here’s one for under $100USD.

Tips for Doing the Harry Potter Set Tour Like a Pro

Having addressed the basics, here are some tips you should keep in mind when planning your visit:

1. Check on the Warner Bros Studio Tour website for special events

The studio tour often has special weeks during which there are specialized displays or demonstrations.

If you have quite some time in London, I suggest looking up when special events are happening and to plan accordingly.

I was luckily around for the beginning of Wand Week, so I got to see wandmakers do their thing and I even got to pose with some Death Eaters. Super cool!

harry potter studio tour location

2. Allow extra time for travel

Especially if you are new to London, trying to navigate the transit there can take time, so give yourself plenty of time to arrive at the studio.

That being said, do not hyperventilate if your ticketed time is fast approaching. While the reservation system does assign you a time, they won’t turn you away if you are a bit late.

harry potter studio tour location

3. Don’t forget to print your Warner Bros Studio Tour ticket

This will make the whole process smoother.

One girl that came with us didn’t print hers and upon arrival, she realized that her order never actually went through.

Luckily, even though they claim there is no box office at the attraction, she was able to purchase a ticket there, but do book in advance to save yourself the trouble.

4. Set yourself a budget for magical souvenirs

Trust me, when you enter the Harry Potter Studio Tour Shop for the first time, you will lose all sense of self control.

You will suddenly want all these things that you would never need.

Legit wizard robe? Okay!

Replica wand? Yes please.

There are so many amazingly crafted souvenirs for sale that you will easily empty your wallet.

For budget-conscious backpackers (like me) or large families with crying children, setting a budget beforehand is a must.

harry potter studio tour location

5. Grab yourself a free Warner Bros Studio Tour London passport

At some point during the tour, you might notice children getting awesome embossed stamps on a Harry Potter passport.

Uh, yeah, those are actually not just for kids!

I shamelessly (and sweetly) asked a staff member for one, and they kindly obliged.

Getting the stamps is fun and having a Harry Potter passport is pretty much the best souvenir ever.

6. Be sure to check out other Harry Potter filming locations around the UK too

If you’ve made it all the way to Leavesden, you’re actually pretty close to a variety of other Harry Potter filming locations!

While this set tour is of course incredible, there are dozens of other real-life filming locations scattered around the UK that you can visit for yourself. Click here for a full list.

Harry Potter Set Tour Recap with Photos

With those tips out of the way, I’d love to show you some photos and a brief overview of the experience from my visit in 2014. Note that they have added a lot since then, but still…

WARNING: spoilers, spoilers, spoilers.

Some would say that the best way to experience this tour is by seeing everything first hand, but if you are curious to see photos and more, feel free to scroll further.

harry potter studio tour location

Your magical experience begins as soon as you walk into the building. All around the lobby are canvases with various Harry Potter characters, as well as props and other cool artifacts hanging off the walls.

Even the task of waiting in line (typically the most mundane thing ever) is a joy for this tour.

The queue moves very quickly and there is plenty for you to nerd out about as you wait.

Most notably, Harry’s  cupboard under the stairs , is right next to the queuing area, ensuring that you get a perfect view of this iconic set.

harry potter studio tour location

You’ll notice that groups are taken in based on their spot in line, rather than their timed reservation.

This is why there is some flexibility when it comes to your arrival time.

If you’re a few minutes late, no worries, just hop in the queue and you will make it in all-the-same.

The tour begins with a brief video introduction to the franchise, followed by a preshow featuring Rupert, Daniel and Emma themselves.

As this preshow concludes, the screen reveals the doors to the  Great Hall!  During my tour, they invited any birthday kids to come up and help open the doors.

After  seriously  wishing it was my birthday, I bitterly watched two ecstatic kids live out their childhood dreams, revealing the first stop of the tour, the amazing…

1. Great Hall!

This is the the only part of the tour where your time will be limited, as they let tour groups in every few minutes.

As such, if you want photos, be sure to snap them  quickly !

Being in this room is an unreal feeling. In addition to the long tables, cutlery and elaborate set pieces, you also get to view costumes from students in each house, and important Hogwarts faculty as well!

harry potter studio tour location

2. The Big Room

After your time in the Great Hall, you are brought into the  Big Room , which houses a variety of sets, props and costumes.

Here, you are given free reign to explore for yourself and gawk at all the amazing pieces the room contains!

Highlights for me were definitely the  Potions classroom  (complete with a Snape costume on display),  the Gryffindor Common Room  and  the Weasley House .

harry potter studio tour location

Many of the sets also have interactive buttons where you can make objects move by pressing them.

This was especially cool in the Weasley kitchen, where the touch of a button could make an iron move on its own, make vegetables chop themselves, etc. Super neat!

harry potter studio tour location

For those seeking a sweet photo opp, there are several green screen opportunities to ride a broom as a Quidditch player and more! I didn’t wait in line for this bit, but it definitely looked like a lot of fun! Here are some photos from the Big Room:

harry potter studio tour location

3. The Backlot

After perusing the Big Room, you are brought outside to the  Backlot , home to a variety of sets including Harry’s  Privet Drive home , the  Hogwarts Bridge , the  Knight Bus  and of course,  the concession stands!

It’s at this point in the tour that you can live out your childhood fantasy of sipping a nice, cold  butterbeer.

harry potter studio tour location

Be sure to explore the bridge before you purchase a butterbeer, as no food or drink is allowed on that set.

harry potter studio tour location

Now, while public opinion seems to be split on the taste of butterbeer, I have to say that  I. loved. every. single. sip.

It’s very possible that I was blinded by the magic of my surroundings, but I would argue that it’s worth a try regardless!

NOTE: If you want to purchase a souvenir cup, remember to bring a bag or something to wrap it in, as that stuff can get mighty sticky. Here’s a sample of the cool things you’ll see in the backlot!

harry potter studio tour location

4. Art Department, Creature Effects and Diagon Alley

When you’re ready to go back inside, countless wonders from the  creature effects & art department  await you. Here, you really get to appreciate the depth of work put into creating a whole magical world.

I was really wowed by everything.

harry potter studio tour location

In this area, you will see masks, wigs, models and more of your favourite magical creatures.

In this second half of the tour as well, you get to walk through Diagon Alley. The details and work in the set will absolutely blow you away. The shops look so real, you’ll be tempted to go knocking on their doors.

harry potter studio tour location

5. Hogwarts Castle Model

And lastly, the grand finale of the Harry Potter set tour… The model of Hogwarts!

This one here is a real showstopper.

A walkway surrounding the model allows you to view it from all angles, taking in the fine details of this wonderful school.

For many Harry Potter fans, seeing the castle like this is a dream come true. Now, if only it were real!

harry potter studio tour location

At the end of the tour, just before the entrance of the Harry Potter Studio Tour Shop, you will see this wonderfully beautiful quote appear on the screen:

harry potter studio tour location

It was at this point that  I began to bawl.  I couldn’t help it!

Everything that I loved about the series had been shown to me in the past few hours, and for that short period of time, I got to live out my dream of seeing the magical world that made my childhood.

Messy and gross, I walked into the gift shop, which was a massive treasure trove of things you never knew you wanted or needed. Wands for every character? I’ll take 100.

And there you have it,  the most magical experience ever . One day, I  will   visit the Wonderful Wizarding World of Harry Potter, but until then, I think this tour has given me enough happy & geeky memories to last. …. At least for the next little while.

Enjoyed every bit of your blog article.Much thanks again. Really Cool.

Thanks for reading! 🙂

bookmarked!!, I like your blog!

thanks Jane!! 😀

Hi Christina! I’m going to be traveling alone to London this week, would the Harry Potter tour be fun for a solo traveler? Also, I was considering buying a groupon for a night tour, but the picture of you holding the butter beer appears to be outside? I guess we would be missing this part of the tour if I went at night then eh?

hi Lisa, I hope this comment isn’t too late! but YES YES YES the tour would 100% still be fun as a solo traveler (provided that you like Harry Potter haha). I didn’t realize they had a special night tour, but the butterbeer was outside in a special lot where they had lots of big props and set pieces (it’s part of the tour) so I can’t imagine they would leave it out for any reason. I have my fingers crossed for you!

Thank you for this article and the pics. I always need to take a peek of the atmosphere beforehand since I’m going solo. I hope they will let me use my selfie stick inside.

  • By London Overground: (similar to the tube but doesn’t go underground) From Euston Station in London zone 1, the journey is 17 stops and takes approximately 50 minutes. It’s a direct line so you won’t need to change. You can use an Oyster Card for this journey but being in zone 9, the cost of each journey is usually between £5-9 for an adult depending on the time of day. As it’s still in a London zone, children under 10 travel free . The advantage of travelling to Watford Junction this way is that Overground trains depart every few minutes and you don’t need to book in advance.
  • By Train: From Euston Station you can also take an express train operated by West Midlands Railway which only takes around 15 minutes to Watford Junction. You can also use an Oyster Card for this journey (same price as using the Overground above), or you can also buy train tickets at the station or online in advance. As this train line isn’t operated by the transport network of London (TFL), it is necessary to buy tickets for children over 5 years. You can buy train tickets in advance and see the timetables at  Trainline .

Choosing between the Overground or the mainline train really just depends on your preferences.  The Overground will take longer, but whilst the train is quicker, it can work out more expensive, and you’ll need to buy tickets for children over five years old.

From Watford Junction Station, there is a shuttle bus direct to Warner Bros. Studios, which departs every 20 minutes and costs £2.50 per person (round trip). This takes 15 minutes to reach the studios and to get on this bus you must show your Harry Potter Studio Tour tickets.

We advise that you carefully calculate the travel time needed for the train and potentially wait for the bus so that you don’t arrive late and miss your slot. It’s recommended that you arrive at Watford Junction 45 minutes before the time of your Harry Potter tour.

10 must-see places for Harry Potter fans in London

As mentioned above, some of the scenes from the Harry Potter films were filmed at real places in London. You can easily visit these places, so why not create your own Harry Potter Tour of London? Alternatively, you can book a Harry Potter walking tour of London here .

We have put together a list of 10 places where they filmed scenes from Harry Potter in London:

Leadenhall Market

Leadenhall market is a beautiful, Victorian market used to film some Harry Potter scenes in London, including Diagon Alley.  This place already has a special atmosphere, but we’re sure you’ll feel your bit of Harry Potter magic as you pass through. Although it’s not far from the centre of London, it’s not a popular destination with tourists, but if you’re a fan of Harry Potter, pop by and take a look for yourself.

harry potter studio tour location

Cecil Court

Although Leadenhall market was where they filmed scenes for Diagon Alley, it could be said that Cecil Court is a real-life Diagon Alley. Cecil Court is situated close to Charing Cross Station and is a small alley lined with quaint shops selling antiques and books. Another small corner of London that you can add to your own Harry Potter Tour of London.

Platform 9 ¾

No Harry Potter fan would turn down the opportunity to have their photo taken at the most famous train platform in the world, and when you visit London, you can make this a reality. Kings Cross Station is home to the famous Platform 9 ¾ , the departure point of the Hogwarts Express. It’s a delightful scene with a plaque on the wall saying Platform 9 ¾ and the luggage trolley disappearing through the wall – a Harry Potter photo opportunity at its best! The facade of St Pancras Station next door was also used as the exterior of the train station in the Harry Potter movies.

⇒ Find out more about Platform 9 ¾ in London here

Lambeth Bridge

Lambeth Bridge crosses the River Thames and is featured in the famous Harry Potter scene where the Knight Bus had to squeeze between 2 red London buses. Okay, we can’t provide the magic of the Knight Bus, but seeing this familiar bridge in real life is fun.

Borough Market

Located next to London Bridge, Borough Market is one of the must-see places in London. The entrance to the dripping cauldron of Harry Potter was filmed here, in one of the shops in Borough Market, which was a florist until recently. See if you can recognise it as you explore this famous market.

Millennium Bridge

London’s Millennium Bridge is the bridge that was destroyed in the 6 th saga of the Harry Potter films. In real life this bridge is the most famous pedestrian bridge crossing the River Thames, designed by architect Norman Foster. Luckily for us, this fantastic bridge is still standing, and you can enjoy beautiful views as you walk across it from the Tate Modern to St Paul’s Cathedra l on the opposite side. In the film, the London City Hall building workers next to Tower Bridge witness the dementor’s attack on Millennium Bridge.

Reptile House at London Zoo

It’s in the reptile house of London Zoo where Harry discovers he can talk to snakes in the first film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. If you want to see if you can also speak to snakes, put London Zoo in Regent’s Park on your personal Harry Potter Tour of London.

Piccadilly Circus

Ron and Hermione are transported to Piccadilly Circus in the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Piccadilly Circus is also one of the most famous places in London, so you’re bound to find yourself there, just like Ron and Hermione.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

Situated next to Kings Cross Station is the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel with its stunning neo-gothic architecture.  It is from this hotel that Harry and Ron take the Weasley family’s flying Ford Anglia after missing the Hogwarts Express in the second film – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Other Harry Potter film locations in London

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, some characters fly on broomsticks over iconic London landmarks like Tower Bridge, HMS Belfast, the Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square. In the same film, Ron Weasley has problems with his ticket at Westminster tube station.  You’re bound to see most of these famous places on your trip to London.

The driver was friendly and messaged us at what time he would be at the pick-up point and with what car, so that made it very easy. Four hours at the studio is enough, i would say.

Harry potter tour revenue surges past $1 billion.

The Harry Potter tour in Leavesden is a big money spinner for Warner Bros.

Britain's Harry Potter movie tour has generated more than $1 billion of revenue since it opened 12 years ago according to its latest financial statements which show that sales doubled to a record $184.4 million (£149.1 million) in 2022 as the end of pandemic restrictions cast a powerful spell on the attraction.

The tour is set inside two cream-coloured cavernous soundstages at Leavesden Studios on the outskirts of London. Owned by media giant Warner Bros. Discovery WBD , Leavesden was originally an aircraft factory before it was converted into a movie studio in 1994 so that James Bond flick GoldenEye could film there.

Warner bought Leavesden in 2010 making it the first studio to have a permanent European base since Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in the 1940s. Leavesden re-opened in 2012 after Warner invested more than $123.7 million (£100 million) in the site. Since then it has been home to well over 50 productions including all eight Potter films, the three Fantastic Beasts spin-offs and last year's highest-grossing movie, Barbie .

The studio generates 39.7% of Leavesden's total revenue which rose by $87.5 million (£70.7 million) to a record $305.8 million (£247.2 million) in the year to 31 December 2022 as we revealed in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper. The increase was entirely driven by the tour as studio revenue dipped 2.9% to $121.3 million (£98.1 million).

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Over the past few years soaring inflation and the cost of living crisis has caused consumers to cut streaming subscriptions leading to studios scaling back the number of shows in production.

It didn't stop there as Leavesden faced the challenge of strikes in Hollywood when actors and writers downed their tools for more than six months last year in a bid to boost the royalties they receive. Warner is still counting the cost of this and on February 23 announced that revenue for the fourth quarter of 2023 was down 7% to $10.2 billion partly driven by strike-induced production delays. On the day of the announcement its shares closed 10% down at $8.61, almost the lowest price since the group was created by the merger of AT&T’s T WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc in April 2022.

The impact is being felt far beyond the studios as special effects firm Framestore, which created the spellbinding visuals in the Potter movies, said it expects margins "to be impacted" by the strikes in 2023.

In contrast, the tour behind the scenes of the Potter movies has been a dream ticket for Warner. Leavesden's net profit more than doubled last year to $87.8 million (£71 million) which was largely driven by the tour given that the studio's revenue reversed. Since 2012 Leavesden has generated total net profits of $589.6 million (£476.7 million) and paid $289.4 million (£234 million) of dividends to Warner.

Since it opened 12 years ago more than 18 million people have streamed through the tour's turnstiles generating a total of $1.2 billion (£935.8 million) of revenue – 67.5% more than the studio has made.

The tour is filled with props and sets from the movies with the latest addition being Professor Sprout's Greenhouse which opened in summer 2022. From the outside, the giant greenhouse appears to be in the grip of a giant vine which covers the walls inside. Its tendrils spread into flower boxes where plants seem to sprout from them. Visitors can uproot them to reveal a squealing shrub as Harry and his chums did in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets .

As we recently revealed , the tour has been so successful that Warner has invested more than $115 million in its first overseas outpost which opened in Tokyo last year and is 50% bigger than its British counterpart.

Leavesden operates the Japanese facility as well as the wildly popular chain of Potter shops and the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage show which premiered in London in 2016 to critical acclaim. Since then it has expanded to five other countries and is still growing as the financial statements reveal that "in 2022 the company invested in another production of the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child ."

Despite the logjam in Hollywood, Leavesden too is expanding. Last year it announced plans to build 11 new sound stages which will increase production capacity by more than 50% and will create 4,000 direct and indirect jobs. It is expanding to stay in the game in the face of increasing competition.

Britain has become a popular location for filming thanks to its generous fiscal benefits which give studios a reimbursement of up to 25.5% of the amount they spend in the country. It explains why Shepperton Studios, just outside London, is planning a 1.2 million square feet expansion which will make it the world's second-biggest studio.

Likewise, nearby Pinewood plans to spend $1.6 billion (£1.3 billion) on new facilities including a studio tour which will put it in even more direct competition with Leavesden. Over the past 80 years Pinewood has been home to everything from the Pink Panther and Paddington to Superman and Star Wars so it may take more than the wave of a magic wand to beat.

Warner Bros. Hollywood Debuts Historical TCM Classic Films Studio Tour

Stung by criticism, Warner Bros. launches a new tour of its Burbank studios that pays homage to the glory days of Hollywood. How different is the TCM Classic Films Tour from the existing studio tour?

By Jason Cochran

April 17, 2024

One of the frustrations of paying a pilgrimage to Hollywood's movie studio tours is the creeping dominance of corporate marketing in the retelling of American cultural history.

As corporations tighten their grip on Hollywood's most historic film production lots, tours become less about the heritage and craftsmanship that made the studios great and more about franchises and souvenirs—Batman in the 1990s, Spider-Man a decade ago, Harry Potter today. But not everyone goes to Hollywood to see sets from Pretty Little Liars or Friends . Many of us also want to see the stomping grounds of James Dean, James Cagney, and Bette Davis.

Fortunately, recent scuffles in the executive suites at Warner Bros. have, surprisingly, resulted in a newfound appreciation of the past—and it's deepening the scope of one of the company's studio tours.

On April 16, Warner Bros. christened a new variety of its studio tour that's not about superheroes, but, rather, the great pictures and stars from Hollywood's Golden Age.

The new  TCM Classic Films Tour at Warner Bros. was born out of a near-death experience for the channel it's named for.

In 2023, the corporate masters of the popular Turner Classic Movies channel, which has garnered a cult following of viewers and vacationers , began gutting the channel's staff. The move whipped up such a backlash that some of America's biggest filmmaking giants, including directors Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson, united to scold the leaders of Warner Bros. Discovery and to protect one of the few mainstream outlets for classic film.

Almost a year later, timed for the same week as TCM's film festival , which draws thousands of fans to Los Angeles each year, Warner Bros. has launched a special studio tour devoted specially to film heritage.

Many features of the new tour, which takes about three and a half hours, aren't different from the regular studio tour , which will remain available.

The latter "includes a visit to Stage 48: Script to Screen , an interactive sound stage highlighting different steps of film production and iconic sets, including the Central Perk Set from Friends and Leonard and Sheldon’s apartment from The Big Bang Theory . The tour’s grand finale is Action and Magic Made Here , showcasing the DC Universe and Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts series. The tour concludes with A Celebration of Warner Bros. , showcasing awards and original props and costumes from classic titles including Casablanca , The Music Man , and My Fair Lady ."

The difference in the TCM-branded tour lies in the 90 minutes spent scooting around the lot in small-group motorized carts painted in a distinct TCM livery. On the new tour, most of the references and filming locations hark back to movies made when stars were stars.

All Warner Bros. studio tours, even the non-TCM ones, begin with your assigned guide/driver asking your group what movies and stars you're most keen to learn about so that each tour can be somewhat tailored to the interests of the group. But on the TCM tours, guides have truly been trained in the history of the studio system's heyday, and little time is wasted with filler on more recent productions unless tourgoers ask.

In addition to the guides' specialized knowledge, the tour features a few taped introductions by TCM's onscreen hosts.

The TCM tours also add a few stops and sights that the standard tours don't include, such as "the exterior of James Dean’s apartment where he resided while working on the lot; the serene rose garden, which in the early years was Jack Warner’s tennis court and was surrounded by talent dressing rooms; and the Eastwood Scoring Stage built in 1929 where countless titles have been scored."

Frommer's was not taken to any of those spots on the tour preview that was offered to the press. Studio tour staff warn guests that not every location is available on every tour departure.

As on the regular tour, TCM's version visits the Property House (pictured below), where guides point out artifacts used in classic films from the '30s to the '60s.

The new tour isn't a radical departure from the standard offering. More than anything, the TCM Classic Films Tour seems like a simple way to make sure fans of Hollywood's heyday are paired with the studio guides most equipped to inform them, giving guides permission to delve into the all-time greats rather than hawk the latest blockbuster.

In an era when the accountants at Warner Bros. are  literally destroying finished films just to log tax write-offs, simply nurturing a little historical respect can feel like a daring act—and movie fans are lucky to find it.

The TCM Classic Films Tour at Warner Bros. Studios Hollywood is available most days from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Tickets are $95 for adults, $82 for children ages 5–10. Book tours in advance at  wbstudiotour.com .
