By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: October 17, 2022

Beginning this fall 2022, Holland America will offer cruises to and around Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia aboard Westerdam .

Currently, Westerdam has a full summer season of Alaska cruises , round-trip from Seattle. Holland America has changed the ship’s itinerary a bit, and added another week of a seven-night Alaska cruise with a September 25, 2022 departure.

Holland America Westerdam Cruises to Australia and Beyond

With everything pointing to Australia and New Zealand reopening their cruise ship ports, Holland America decided to have Westerdam cruise from Alaska to the South Pacific, Australia and beyond.

From Seattle, Westerdam will spend 36 days cruising through South Pacific Islands, as the ship heads to Australia’s southern and eastern regions, and the North and South islands of New Zealand.

The 36-day repositioning cruise to Australia departs Seattle Oct. 2 and arrives into Sydney Harbour on Nov. 8.

Fourteen ports en route to Australia include the  islands of Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea. Plus, three ports in Australia.

“The pent-up demand for cruises to Australia and New Zealand led us to the decision that it would be valuable to have Westerdam sail these unique itineraries that include some uncommon ports for us,” said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer of Holland America Line. “We have the utmost optimism that the entire region will be back to cruising come fall, and our guests have been waiting two years to take their dream cruise.”

Beginning on Nov. 8, Westerdam now offers four cruises in Australia and New Zealand that range from 13 to 15 days.

You can expect port-intensive itineraries so everyone can experience the varied culture, notable cuisine and famous wines from these two destinations.

Scenic cruising includes a day in Fiordland National Park with its snow-capped mountains and expansive fjords.

Holland America Line has opened bookings for new itineraries in Australia and New Zealand this year, as the countries finally open their ports to cruise ships again.

The new voyages will run from September 25, 2022 through March 13, 2023 aboard Westerdam.

Starting November 8, Westerdam will explore Australia and New Zealand on four cruises that range from 13 to 15 days each. The itineraries will be port-intensive, and also include scenic cruising through Fiordland National Park.

Australia & New Zealand

Cruises of Australia and New Zealand introduce passengers to the scenic beauty of lands Down Under. Explore Australia’s sophisticated cities, visit wildlife parks or take an excursion to the Great Barrier Reef for snorkeling, scuba diving or sailing. New Zealand offers a diverse landscape, from alpine mountains and beautiful lakes to rugged cliffs and sandy beaches. Explore Maori villages, dine at a cafe in Auckland, visit a kiwi farm or enjoy the gardens of Christchurch.

Some Australia and New Zealand cruises also make calls in Asia. Each year, there are a few long voyages to Australia and New Zealand from ports on the U.S. mainland, such as New York and Los Angeles.

  • Australia and New Zealand are year-round cruising destinations.
  • Australia and New Zealand cruises are generally 3 to 16 nights, but longer cruises are offered.
  • If you fly from North America to begin your cruise, you will cross the International Date Line and lose a day. Furthermore, your flight will take nearly an entire day. This requires that you leave your hometown for your port of departure at least two days in advance of your cruise. However, we suggest that you leave three or four days before your cruise to allow time to rest and get oriented before boarding the ship. Most cruise lines offer pre-cruise hotel packages.

“The pent-up demand for cruises to Australia and New Zealand led us to the decision that it would be valuable to have Westerdam sail these unique itineraries that include some uncommon ports for us,” said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer of Holland America Line. “We have the utmost optimism that the entire region will be back to cruising come fall, and our guests have been waiting two years to take their dream cruise. These new itineraries give guests a lot to choose from as they explore this part of the world.”

From Alaska to Australia & New Zealand

Holland America Line added a seven-day Alaska cruise roundtrip from Seattle, Washington, departing Sept. 25, extending Westerdam’s season by a week. Sustainable Seafood: Holland America Earns Two More Certifications

In one 2022 survey, 80 percent of travelers responded that sustainable tourism was important to them, according to Statisa, a global research company. So, it’s of interest to know this new fish/seafood factoid: Holland America Line , which already has an industry-leading Global Fresh Fish Program , is now further expanding its sustainability reach when it comes to fish and seafood served on its vessels. So, if you’re looking for sustainable seafood on vacation, the premium line is a good option.

Now, Holland America is newly certified globally by both the Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council . The news was announced by Gus Antorcha, Holland America’s president, during an event Sunday on Nieuw Statendam at Port Everglades, FL.

(Shown in the photo above is Rudi’s Sel de Mer, a specialty fish/seafood restaurant on Rotterdam. Photo by Susan J. Young.)

Sustainable Seafood: First Line to Earn Both Certifications

Holland America, the first global cruise line to receive both certifications, says it’s committed to serving guests the highest quality sustainable seafood when wild-caught or farmed “responsibly.”

The Marine Stewardship Council’s focus is on sustainable wild-caught seafood. In turn, Aquaculture Stewardship Council works to foster responsibly farmed seafood, helping ease pressures on wild fish and seafood populations. Both groups seek to minimize environmental impacts.

The two certifying organizations are widely considered to have the most credible standards worldwide for certified seafood. “Our guests care about the quality and sustainability of the fresh fish we serve, and so do we,” emphasized Antorcha. He said the line’s commitment to guests is to bring regionally inspired fresh seafood dishes from port to plate in 48 hours.

Sustainable Seafood: Onboard Dining and Experience

Now, all 11 ships in Holland America’s fleet are “Chain of Custody” certified. That means they can serve seafood both certified and labeled by the two stewardship organizations. The full roll-out will start across five Holland America ships in May 2024 at the beginning of the Europe and Canada/New England season.

That includes Volendam in the Canada/New England region, and Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Zuiderdam and Oosterdam in Europe. Holland America Line’s six ships sailing Alaska waters already serve 100 percent sustainable seafood under its Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification.

Guests will find the certified seafood dishes in both Holland America’s main dining room, as well as the Lido Market and onboard specialty restaurants. Certified seafood from nine regions worldwide — Asia, Australia, Canada/New England, Mexico, Mediterranean, Northern Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and Hawaii — will be incorporated into the line’s seafood offerings.

Where to Experience?

So, if you’re wondering about some options for sailing and chowing down on fresh seafood that’s certified, The Meandering Traveler has picked two  upcoming Holland America voyages to discuss with your personal travel planner . There are many others as well, but these two provide a sense of the range of the options.

Canada and New England Discovery: The 1,432-passenger Volendam will set sail on a seven-day itinerary between Boston, MA, and Montreal, Quebec, Canada. on multiple departure dates between May and late June 2024.

So, if you’re hankering for a close-in cruise, on one of the line’s smaller ships, and with great seafood, this is one good option. At press time, prices for the June 21, 2024, sailing, for instance, started at $829 per person, double occupancy.

Italian Splendors and Ultimate Mediterranean Explorer : For those seeking a Europe voyage this summer that’s a lengthier, robust Mediterranean option, check out this 23-day itinerary.  On July 5, 2024, the 1,964-passenger Oosterdam will sail from Trieste (Venice), Italy, to Civitavecchia (Rome – see photo above ), Italy.

Guests will sail to destinations in Italy, Montenegro and Greece. Prices at press time started at $4,284 per person, double occupancy. Contact your personal travel planner today.

How to Know It’s Certified?

So, how will guests know something is certified. Well, onboard menus will indicate the type of certification with a symbol marked next to the dish using either the Marine Stewardship Council blue fish, Aquaculture Stewardship Council sea green, or Responsible Fisheries Management logos.

No, right now not all seafood species served aboard Holland America Line are currently certified. But the cruise line is working toward 100 percent accreditation of species that are eligible to meet the organizations’ standards.

Falling under that umbrella are the following: Asian Barramundi, Tasmania Atlantic Salmon, Canadian and New England Haddock, Hawaiian Swordfish, Mediterranean Sardine, Mexican Tuna, Northern European Dover Sole, and South American Chilean Seabass, to name a few.

Global Fresh Fish Program

The new certifications are the latest achievements for Holland America’s Global Fresh Fish Program. That pioneering initiative engages a global network of 60 ports to source and serve 80 types of fresh fish — from port to plate in less than 48 hours — in all restaurants on board.

Holland America chefs learn techniques and fresh seafood recipes from Chef Chef Masaharu Morimoto, the line's fresh fish ambassador. Photo by Holland America Line.

So, guests will find fresh fish and ingredients native to various regions where the ships sail. “Overall, Holland America is striving for more ‘destination-inspired menus’ and local specialties,” says Shelby Steudle , president, Pavlus Travel . “The goal is to tell the story of each itinerary’s ports of call through onboard cuisine.”

Additionally, the Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council certifications follow Holland America’s move to become the first major cruise line to serve 100 percent fresh, certified sustainable and traceable wild Alaska seafood on board its six ships sailing Alaska voyages.

That falls under the line’s Responsible Fisheries Management certification.

Timing-wise, this Holland America news about additional sustainable seafood certifications is one of the first announcements from a major cruise line during the week of Seatrade Cruise Global in South Florida. That the cruise industry’s most important conference annually, and it kicks off today in Miami Beach.

Now on site at Seatrade, The Meandering Traveler will keep readers posted with a roundup of tidbits from the show during a future blog.

Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam to Return to Dover

  • April 8, 2024

Nieuw Statendam in Dover

The Port of Dover announced that Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam will return to Dover again this year, according to a press release.

Both ships will call in Dover on April 20 and 26 respectively, following the Rotterdam’s commemorative 150 th anniversary voyage on April 17, 2023, and the Nieuw Statendam’s inaugural call on September 8, 2023. The Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam will both visit Dover as part of transatlantic voyages.

This follows Holland America’s announcement to add Dover as the UK homeport for the Nieuw Statendam in 2025, with 10 sailings in summer 2025, its largest set of UK calls in ten years. The ship will explore destinations including the Canary Islands, British Isles, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Iberia and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Peter Wright, head of cruise at the Port of Dover said: “It’s always a joy to welcome Holland America Line and their guests back to Dover. The upcoming return of Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam will give us another fantastic opportunity to celebrate our unique history together, whilst adding another chapter to the story.

“We are excited for the future and look forward to presenting the very best of Kent alongside Dover’s much-loved scenery and heritage when Nieuw Statendam sails in for many more port-of-call visits.”

Karen Farndell, Holland America Line director of sales and marketing, said: “We can’t wait to return to Dover and are eagerly awaiting giving our guests the opportunity to explore the local area. We always receive a warm welcome and the sight of the iconic white cliffs is the perfect landmark for our visit.

“Nieuw Statendam will be a regular fixture next year, as she will spend a full season sailing out of Dover, providing our guests with an even greater choice of destinations and the option to sail with us without the need to fly. So the visit gives us the ideal opportunity to prepare for 2025 and all the benefits and opportunities it will bring.”

Holland America Line Reroutes 2025 World Cruise Amid Red Sea Attacks

Amid ongoing missile strikes in the Red Sea, Holland America Line is changing the itinerary for its 2025 world cruise .

The 124-day Grand World Voyage, offered aboard the ship Zuiderdam, was supposed to sail through the Red Sea next year. But as Houthi rebels continue to attack vessels in the region, the cruise line decided it was best to re-route the ship.

“The safety of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, and we have made the decision to avoid the Red Sea after close consultation with global security experts and government authorities,” said Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer for Holland America Line.

Instead, the cruise line has added new ports in Africa, Europe and Costa Rica, but the changes only affect the final 43 days of the sailing. The voyage begins January 4 and ends May 9; it’s a roundtrip sailing from Fort Lauderdale.

The new itinerary has the ship visiting 49 ports in 34 countries and territories on six continents—one more port than originally planned.

“Making this change now allows us to provide certainty for our guests in preparing for this 124-day trip around the world,” said Bodensteiner. “The new itinerary was built with guest experience top of mind and maintains exciting European and African destinations with even more ports to explore in the Mediterranean.”

New port calls in Africa include Walvis Bay, Namibia. and Praia, Cape Verde. In the Mediterranean, new additions include Valletta, Malta; Tangier, Morocco; Arrecife, Alicante, Cartagena and Tenerife, Spain; Olbia and Sardinia, Italy; and Kusadasi, Turkey.

“Not only will added calls to destinations like Kusadasi grant access to the wonders of Ephesus, but originally scheduled destinations such as Alexandria will allow guests to take in the sights of both the Pyramids of Giza and Sakkara, as well as give them a chance to answer the riddle of the Sphinx,” Bodensteiner added.

The world cruise still has spots available, with fares starting at $24,999 per person based on double occupancy. Guests who book by June 3 can get extra perks worth up to $8,500 per person, including free Wi-Fi, a $500 air credit, airport transfers, luggage delivery services and laundry.

Holland America Line is the latest cruise company to adjust itineraries because of the ongoing Houthi rebel strikes. Royal Caribbean , MSC Cruises , Carnival Corporation , Crystal Cruises and others have also canceled or rerouted some ships.
