Step Inside the Best New Residential Architecture in Dallas This October
An exclusive first look at the aia dallas tour of homes' selections.
D allas has no shortage of great home tours. Any weekend is well spent exploring the glamorous bungalows of Hollywood/Santa Monica, the Queen Anne-style estates along Swiss Avenue, and the quirky, Charles Dilbeck-filled corner of Cochran Heights. But only one Dallas home tour lets you explore the best of every coveted neighborhood: the AIA Dallas Tour of Homes.
The popular event focuses on the best architecture across the city, no matter where that work resides. With tickets now available for the 2023 AIA Dallas Tour of Homes, we’re offering an exclusive peek at the six striking dwellings, chosen from countless submissions by the Tour of Homes committee, that will open their doors on Saturday, October 28, and Sunday, October 29.
East Dallas: Maestri Studio
Shop for mom.
An East Dallas Jewel by Maestri Studio
Architect Eddie Maestri and his eponymous studio are known for modernist masterpieces (often with a playful dash of Palm Springs). This East Dallas gem is a blend of SoCal/Asian styles, inspired by the clients’ travels. Bringing the outdoors in was key, and Maestri Studio did it in surprising ways. Unique additions include a sliding glass door between a living area and the central courtyard, as well as an indoor/outdoor fireplace that punches through the exterior wall.
North Dallas: AMDG Studio
A preston hollow stunner by amdg studio.
What began as a modest ranch remodel evolved into a serious makeover on Bobbitt Drive. The client dreamed of an airy, sun-soaked place to cook and entertain. Walnut millwork, Douglas fir ceilings, Lueders limestone, and more are seen throughout the high-efficiency home, which was designed to accommodate a wheelchair in the future (along with a dedicated suite for a future caregiver).
Junius Heights: VeuxDeux Designs
A renovated 1920s crafstman in junius heights.
Known for thoughtful preservation and a harmonious high-low blend, the talented team behind VeuxDeux Design , founded in 2017 by AIA architect Leslie Nepveu, completely renovated a small Craftsman home in Dallas’ historic Junius Heights neighborhood (part of the 1919 Munger Place Revision) and added a 795-square-foot second floor. The foundation was adjusted, a fireplace was replaced, and an antique gas radiator was installed to add even more character to the classic Dallas home.
Preston Hollow: Malone Maxwell Dennehy Architects
A preston hollow “classic” by malone maxwell dennehy architects.
An airy contemporary residence by the longstanding Dallas architecture firm allows every room to commune with its killer backyard. A striking blend of contemporary and traditional elements, “it is deliberately domestic and recalls familiar tropes of American houses” according to the AIA website.
University Park: Janson Luter Architects
A university park home by janson luter architects.
To build this large family home on a small corner lot in the Park Cities, the Janson Luter team had to get creative. A collaboration with Dan Shipley, FAIA of the award-winning firm shipleyArchitects, helped establish the unique flow of the open concept home. A thoughtful material palette (including St. Joe’s bricks coursed to align with all openings of the facade) was selected to complement the project’s structure.
Bent Tree: Marc McCollom Architect
A bent tree modern by marc mccollom architects.
The late ’70s home in Far North Dallas was a “ rambling conglomeration of rooms ” beyond its striking modern exterior. The Marc McCollom team did a complete renovation of the 7,500-square-foot interior, bringing clarity, scale, and stunning materials.

Architect: Donald Speck Built: 1960
In 1960, on a hillside facing White Rock Lake, architect Donald Speck created an iconic and enduring residence for the Topper family. Framed by broad single-story ranch-style homes, Speck inventively carved away the hillside and continued the upper band of windows down the exterior wall to provide a hidden, daylight filled lower level for the bedrooms for the large family.

Architect: Far+Dang Built: 2021
Far+Dang designed this inspiring warm, modern home for the Thurmond family in 2021. “We want our home to be a big wabi-sabi Texas welcome.” says homeowner and builder Taylor Thurmond.
11002 Creekmere
Built: 1963
This 1963 mid-century modern home was designed and built by its original owners, an engineer and his wife who graduated from UT Southwestern Medical School and was in her Neurology Fellowship at Baylor Medical Center. The current owners have had the privilege of meeting one of the original owners and members of the family who lived in the home from the 1970s through 2014.
1030 Forest Grove
Architect: Ju-Nel, Lyle Rowley and Jack Wilson Built: 1963
The White Rock Home Tour was introduced in 2006 by Hexter parents inspired to share their wonderful Ju-Nel homes to raise funds for their neighborhood school. On our 15th annual tour, we are so excited to reveal a newly renovated fabulous Ju-Nel home!
Built: 1961
On first glance this wonderful mid-century modern home is mysteriously discreet. A calm and thoughtfully composed front lawn alludes to the cool, minimalist sensibility of these homeowners and their stewardship of this special home.

What people are saying about the wrht.
“There are many great home tours in the North Texas area, but we value our collaborations with the White Rock Home Tour especially. Curated by a passionate group of volunteers on behalf of a worthy cause, the tour spotlights the residential architecture of one of Dallas' most interesting neighborhoods. Their attention to Ju-Nel Homes, a small firm which created some wonderful mid-century gems specifically for their sites and using materials particular to Texas, is exciting and led to a popular exhibition at the Center several years ago. This is an event not to be missed.” GREG BROWN Dallas Center for Architecture
“I am always excited to see what will be on the tour each year, it is always an excellent opportunity for increasing awareness and appreciation for our local residential architecture and design culture, specifically modern homes. Whether it is mid-century homes that still exist in their original condition, restorations, renovations, or recent construction, they all offer opportunities for exposure to quality design. Through the variety of digital and printed media, modernism is perhaps more accessible than ever, but nothing can replace actually experiencing a project in person. These tours provide that opportunity. I am proud to be a part of this years event.” CLIFF WELCH, AIA Welch Architecture
“As a longtime resident of the White Rock Lake area, I can't think of a more vibrant community to live and work. My husband and I fell in love with the lake and the unique vibe of Old Lake Highlands back when searching to buy our very first mid-century modern home almost 20 years ago. It has been a pleasure to watch our children grow up here and for our family to be active members of the community. Since living in the neighborhood, we haven’t missed a single year of the White Rock Home Tour. So now, as a Realtor and proud mom of 2 Hexter alums, I am pleased and honored to sponsor the White Rock Home Tour, and to give back to the community that has contributed so much to our family.” JENNIFER RILEY RICE, REALTOR Heather Guild Group @ Compass
“I was the Chair for the 2013 White Rock Home Tour while my daughter attended Hexter. It was a true highlight of being at Hexter and watching the talented planning team come together and have a lot of fun pulling off a very successful home tour that year. I am still good friends with many of those team members and recently sold one of their mid-century modern homes last year. All the hours of planning are truly worth it when you get to see everyone touring the amazing homes and enjoying the wonderful architecture on those beautiful spring days. Best wishes to this year's team and tour!” DENNIS COLEMAN, REALTOR Ebby Halliday

JAMES New York
The JAMES showroom has made its way to the Big Apple! Nestled in the iconic Interior Arts Building on East 61st Street, the 4,000 square foot space aims to redefine the city’s design landscape. The choice of the Interior Arts Building is a testament to JAMES’s commitment to heritage and community. The building, home to prestigious galleries, antique dealers, and design businesses, perfectly aligns with JAMES’s boutique sensibilities. Founder Meredith Ellis, who started her career in this very building 25 years ago, brings a full-circle moment to the showroom’s history. JAMES is rooted in relationships and aesthetics more so than geography, making for a unique and inviting atmosphere where design enthusiasts can discover new lines. It’s interiors feel more like home than a showroom.
The decision to set up shop in the Interior Arts Building isn’t just a strategic move; it’s a nod to design history, with legendary figures like Bunny Williams as neighbors. Meredith and Hunter Ellis are eagerly anticipating what lies ahead, as the expansion aligns seamlessly with the progressive growth of Meredith’s interior design business.

One brand, four magazines.
Inside jason witten’s farmhouse-style dream home in vaquero.
From D Home September-October 2023
When it came time to build their dream home, Michelle and Jason Witten didn’t go far. The Wittens and their four children were living in the exclusive Vaquero neighborhood in Westlake. But after adding on to their home and still craving more space, they realized it was time to build on a lot just around the corner. And they knew they wanted to do it their way. “It was super important for this to be ‘us’ and who we are,” says Michelle.
For starters, Jason and Michelle, high school sweethearts from Tennessee, wanted to honor their roots aesthetically with farmhouse-inspired elements, like sliding barn doors, wooden shutters, exposed beams, and shiplap siding. But the Wittens also wanted to stay true to the ethos of Southern hospitality, which exudes from their down-to-earth natures. “We’ve all been in nice homes where you can’t sit there or you can’t touch that,” says Jason. “We wanted comfortable and welcoming.” Add a little Dallas Cowboys nostalgia and a hint of coastal Florida cool, and the house is uniquely Witten.
To do that, the couple carefully crafted an A-list team. First, they called on Jon Hebb and Neal Calhoun with SCH Builders, who are well versed in the Vaquero neighborhood—their team has worked on around 40 projects there. Plus, SCH had helped the Wittens add on to their previous home, so they knew the couple’s personal style well. “They wanted tons of natural light—lots of windows that go from floor to ceiling. It’s a bright, light house,” says Hebb. From there, Michelle was introduced to designer Fran DeLeo of DeLeo & Fletcher Design. “She was able to take my ‘all over the place’ ideas and bring them all together and make it all flow,” Michelle says.
Finding the right architect was crucial in order to create a big family house with a fresh, laid-back vibe. The couple met with David Stocker, principal architect at SHM Architects, and clicked right away. Stocker was tasked with designing a home that wasn’t overbearing—an important note from the couple. “We didn’t want you to pull in and say, ‘Oh, this is a big formal home.’ We aren’t formal people,” says Michelle. To do that, Stocker strategically placed the 2,200-square-foot gymnasium on the back of the residence, which hides the large structure from the street. “The site fell off in the back, so we were also able to find a space to lessen the scale of the gym,” Stocker explains. “David nailed it,” says Jason.
Michelle took the lead in selecting the furniture and fabrics for her home, with inspiration ranging from Atlanta-based designer Suzanne Kasler’s portfolio to the family’s favorite vacation spot of 30A in Florida. “Michelle has a great eye for design, and she is passionate about her home,” explains DeLeo, who worked to marry her client’s selections with just the right paint colors, trims, hardware, and plumbing fixtures. “But she’s also realistic about everyday life. She has four children, so things have to be comfortable, fun, and playful.”
That’s apparent in the family room, where an oversized sectional from Lee Industries is perfect for cuddling up during movie night. “I wanted a sectional that the entire family can fit on, which is hard for six people and a big husband,” Michelle laughs. It’s paired with a Currey & Co. lighting fixture, a couple of Lee Industries chairs, and sheer drapes designed by Kirstie Carollo, owner of Bella Beach House in Destin, Florida. Multiple play-rooms are sprinkled throughout the residence, including a craft room, where the kids are encouraged to play with slime and Play-Doh. “It’s a place where they can be messy and do all the things,” says Michelle. Each room is livable but still beautiful, with a mix of showroom pieces, custom furniture, and Michelle’s finds. (She loves to hunt for unexpected items, like the Barnaby Lane swing in the family room, which she purchased on a whim on Cyber Monday.)
And naturally, the home features collectibles from Jason’s 17-season NFL career, during most of which he was a celebrated tight end for the Dallas Cowboys. “I wasn’t a huge memorabilia guy,” he says. “My boys thought it was pretty cool. So I kept most of it.” After moving into the house in July 2020, Jason slept in the home for two nights before leaving for Las Vegas for a season with the Raiders. During that time, Michelle installed most of the keepsakes. “I didn’t ask for permission from him,” she explains. “He didn’t want to make it about him. But it’s special and important to us.” For instance, Tulsa, Oklahoma–based designer Judy Littrell, a friend of Michelle’s, recommended they line the wall that leads to son CJ’s room with cleats. As they are suspended in the open rather than encased within glass, sometimes Michelle will notice shoelaces have been messed with. “I wonder, ‘Were the boys touching them or putting them on?’ ” Michelle says. “It doesn’t matter, because that’s the feel of the house. Nothing is off-limits.”
Heart of the Home
Jason Witten knows all too well the importance of giving back. He’s never shied away from telling his childhood story, which was tainted with domestic violence. “I was blessed that my grandparents took us in,” he says. “My grandfather also happened to be my high school football coach, and everything I accomplished in my life, I owe to him. I wanted to recognize people who did that for me and pay it forward by being involved in charities.” Throughout his time as a Cowboy, Jason often volunteered with organizations such as The Salvation Army and The Family Place. After working with the latter, he noticed a specific need in shelters: male mentors for kids from abusive homes. Through his SCOREkeepers program , trained volunteer mentors are placed in six shelters across the state so that children have a positive male influence to emulate. On top of his volunteer priorities, Jason’s latest career path has led him to the head football coach position at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, where he continues to mentor and lead young athletes—including his two sons—on and off the field. They often open up their home for school pool parties and football-team celebrations. “We just love this latest season that we’re in,” says Michelle.

2024 NBA playoffs bracket, schedule, scores, games today: Celtics vs. Cavs, Thunder vs. Mavericks in Game 1
Eight teams remain in the battle for the larry o'brien trophy.
The second round of the 2024 NBA playoffs will be fully underway by Tuesday night. Two second-round series have already started (and the reigning champs already find themselves in a big hole), and the other pair get going Tuesday with Game 1s for Celtics vs. Cavaliers and Thunder vs. Mavericks. Boston and Oklahoma City, the top seeds in their respective conferences, will try to take care of business at home.
Home-court has not mattered in the second round in Denver, however. The Nuggets are in trouble against the Timberwolves after a blowout loss in Monday's Game 2. The Wolves are up 2-0 over Nikola Jokic and the 2023 champs, and they'll head home with a chance to pull off a sweep at the Target Center.
In the Eastern Conference, the Knicks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in their second-round series against the Pacers. Jalen Brunson scored 43 points and it was a wild finish in a nail-biting Knicks win . That's been business as usual for the Knicks in these playoffs.
The postseason field started with 20 teams. The Warriors, Kings, Hawks and Bulls were ousted in the Play-In Tournament before the Pelicans, Suns, Clippers, Lakers, Heat, 76ers, Bucks and Magic were eliminated in the first round.
Here's a look at the upcoming schedule, as well as all the playoff scores. All games airing on ABC, ESPN and NBA TV are streaming on fubo (try for free).
