Hotel La Palma

Purportedly the oldest hotel on the island—it dates back to 1822, when the original owner Giuseppe Pagano created a glamorous flophouse for roving creatives in his home—Hotel La Palma was taken over by Oetker Collection in 2021, with the promise of a breakneck makeover in time for its bicentennial last summer. It proved an overambitious timetable, and the opening was pushed back an entire year. But the gut renovation upgraded the property from a workday four-star to what aims to be the island’s plushest hotel, a fitting sibling to existing Oetker-operated landmarks such as Eden Rock St Barths and London’s Lanesborough. The reimagined property will finally welcome guests this summer.

There’s a fistful of room categories at this hotel, cannily carved out of the conversion footprint, which took the former room count down from 72 to just 50, so choose carefully. The priciest is the Palma suite (#314), which claims to be the largest at any hotel on the island at almost 2,2000 square feet. It has its own wraparound terrace and can be configured for up to five bedrooms, with every booking also including full-time butler service and a comped day at the private beach tucked next to the hotel’s beach club, Da Gioia.

The Rundown

Greeted by name at check-in?

Yes. I was whisked to my room, thankfully, to freshen up. Bonus for the quick tour of my room, which didn’t require a manual to operate.

Was a welcome drink ready and waiting when you arrived? (Bonus points if it wasn’t just fruit juice)

Is there a private butler for every room?

Nope, but the service is exceptional. The default reaction to glimpsing any guest is a genuine smile—but there’s no dedicated staffer rostered to a given room.

Is the sheet thread count higher than 300?

Yes . They’re by Mascioni in Lombardy—naturally, Italian. Plush and comfy beds are luxury hotel staples, but what about pillow-soft mats by the bedside and hotel slippers that don’t seem made from a few sheets of stitched-together Bounty? Bonus point for the turndown gifts, far more keepsakes than a chocolate: a branded eye mask, for instance, and branded robe.

Is there a heated floor in the bathroom? What about a bidet?

No and yes. No underfloor foot-warming, but there’s a bidet in the WC—no upscale Italian hotel would dare skip that amenity.

Are the toiletries full-sized?

Yes. The fruity floral Angeli di Firenze, a staple of another Italian luxury brand, Santa Maria Novella. Two sets of full-sized toiletries, in fact—one by the bath (also equipped with a branded inflatable pillow) and another in the shower.

Is there a private pool for the room’s exclusive use? How are the spa and gym?

No (but a bonus point nonetheless).

Do you want to spend Friday night in the lobby bar?  

Yes (and a bonus yes!).

La Palma has one of the best bar spots in the entire island: Bianca, a new addition via this renovation, right on its roof, with superb views out across the main town—and cooling breezes all-too welcome on a warm night. Don’t miss the basement supper club, Anema e Core (that’s Spirit and Heart in Caprese dialect): the Eurotrashy loungecore spot has a deliciously unselfconscious affect. When you’re handed a branded tambourine to tap along with the band, hold onto it, as that’s an insider’s island souvenir. And yes, that might be Beyoncé, Reese Witherspoon, or Leonardo DiCaprio singing along—they’ve all been spotted there.

Is there caviar on the room service menu? If so, what kind?

No (but a bonus yes). It’s not specified on the menu, but just call down and ask for the upgraded eggs benedict from the lavish breakfast buffet—for an extra $43, you can smother it in caviar.

Would you buy the hotel if you could?

Yes, but I doubt the Reuben Brothers would sell. The London-based property entrepreneurs snapped up the pile and have plowed more than just money into the makeover in partnership with operator Oetker. It’s clearly a passion project, too: Malta-based interior designer Francis Sultana, a London society favorite, was tapped to handle his first hotel by Debra Reuben—wife of co-chair David—who was an existing client.

The Verdict

Capri’s allure remains compelling, despite the hordes of visitors that swarm its streets in summertime. La Palma is undeniably its standout hotel now, especially given the careworn state of nearby rivals like La Quisisana, but take note: It’s right in the heart of town, so better for party animals than seclusion seekers—there’s a reason its enduring asset is that gloriously retro, so-kitsch-it’s-cool nightclub.

The breathtaking island of Capri, where Mediterranean glamour peaks among the vivid blue waters and charming Italian hills, has just gotten – if possible – even glitzier with the opening of Hotel La Palma, the first Oetker Collection hotel property across Italy.

Long-time purveyors of luxury travel of the old school sensibility (these are the folks behind Cap du Eden Roc , Le Bristol Paris and London’s The Lanesborough, to name a few), Oetker Collection has transformed Hotel La Palma, Capri’s first hotel, into what will be undoubtedly one of the country’s foremost hotel destinations.

“I simply cannot think of anything more exciting than the debut of a true masterpiece hotel in one of the most beautiful and glamorous destinations in the world, the island of Capri,” commented Timo Gruenert, CEO of Oetker Collection.

“This is an homage to la dolce vita and the legacy of this legendary location, all while bringing Hotel La Palma once again back to the epicenter of the island’s vibrant social scene.”

The renovation, which took over two and a half years to complete, saw the hotel decrease from 80 rooms to 50, including 18 suites which all feature a private balcony or terrace.

And the design itself has been led by celebrated designer Francis Sultana, in what is his first hotel project. Placing emphasis on the natural color palette of the Mediterranean and fusing Italian craftsmanship and textures with his own signature aesthetics – the marble and bronze bathrooms are a key flourish of his – Sultana has created a space that feels like both a modern luxury hotel and a step back into the island’s glamourous past.

Introducing Hotel La Palma, Capri - Oetker Collection's Debut Italian Property

Capri ’s first hotel, originally built in 1822, is being transformed by Oetker Collection and owners, Reuben Brothers, into an elegant 50-room-and-suite property. This is the first hotel designed by interior design visionary, Francis Sultana , who is collaborating with acclaimed Italian craftsmen and local artisans.

Located mere steps from the famous  Piazzetta , Hotel La Palma will comprise a rooftop restaurant and bar, its own beach club, a newly built pool deck, a spa, and high-fashion boutiques. The La Palma Beach Club , also designed by Sultana, will become  the  day-into-night, buzzing epicenter of the social scene on the island. The food concept will be led by Neapolitan Chef Gennaro Esposito.

Reimagining a Capri icon, the 11th hotel of the Collection, a 50-key hotel in vibrant Capri Village, will be a complete transformation of the original Hotel La Palma that dates back to 1822 – the oldest hotel on the island. In line with Oetker Collection’s mission to carefully expand its portfolio of Masterpiece Hotels in the world’s most desirable destinations, the brand’s first Italian property is set to bring to life the island’s iconic dolce vita lifestyle.

Hotel La Palma is owned by Reuben Brothers, marking the latest landmark procurement in their pipeline of investments and developments in Europe. The Reubens Brothers’ acquisition also includes the legendary  La Taverna Anema e Core  nightclub, a famous nightspot frequented by celebrities, located in the same premises.

A REIMAGINED ICON

Hotel La Palma will celebrate the timeless and warm hospitality for which Oetker Collection is loved. The property has been conceived as a unique, elegant Mediterranean retreat on the fabled Italian island for the modern traveler. The original hotel on Capri will once more become the chicest address on the island for people who want to see and be seen. During its renovation, the room count of the hotel is being drastically decreased, from 80 to 50 rooms – including 18 suites – each complete with its own private balcony or terrace. Located in the beating heart of Capri, just around the corner from the famous Piazza Umberto I – well-known as the ‘ Piazzetta’  – Hotel La Palma is perfectly positioned for guests to visit some of the most notable sites of Capri:  I Giardini di Augusto , Via Krupp,  La Certosa  and the iconic  Faraglioni . Another of the island’s best-known, must-visit natural sites in easy reach from the hotel is the  ‘Grotta Azzurra’  – the Blue Grotto – a dark cavern where the sea glows electric blue, the result of sunlight passing through an underwater cave.

A FEAST FOR THE SENSES

In true Italian fashion, Hotel La Palma will be a gourmand’s delight, with Gennaro’s restaurant, bar and terrace, under the direction of  Chef Gennaro Esposito . Esposito is a culinary hero in Italy, having run his own two-Michelin Star restaurant, Torre del Saracino, for the last 23 years. A simple, stylish step back in time to the Capri of the 1950s, Gennaro’s will embrace the timeless romance of the island, serving unpretentious, authentic Italian cuisine. A contemporary, vibrant place that shuns formality and celebrates the spirit and cuisine of Capri, Gennaro’s will also benefit from being right next door to the great  Taverna Anema e Core . Another highlight will be Bianca, a glamorous, newly created rooftop restaurant and bar open ’til late with spectacular views over Capri Village and the sea in the distance. Bianca, also under the culinary direction of Chef Gennaro Esposito, will become the island’s chicest hangout, transporting guests to another time and place. In addition, Hotel La Palma will offer a brand-new pool deck, complete with an elegant pool bar which pays homage to the ‘classic Capri’ of the golden age.

TO THE BEACH

A short drive to Capri’s southern coast, guests will discover Hotel La Palma’s elegant, yet buzzing  La Palma Beach Club  in the Marina Piccola, home to the island’s most famous beaches and restaurants. This will be the place where fabulous people come and go, to watch sun-drenched days flow into glittering twilight evenings. Open to non-hotel guests, visitors will come from yachts and neighboring hotels as La Palma Beach Club becomes the meeting place of choice on the island for long, lazy lunches created by Gennaro Esposito and sunset cocktails. By day, it will be a playground for the great and the good and by night, home to carefree indulgence and the place to rendezvous and soak in Capri’s animated social scene. Back at the hotel meanwhile, there will be an indulgent spa which will offer three treatment rooms, including one double treatment suite, a sauna, steam bath and ice shower, relaxation space and fitness center. The hotel will also offer three boutiques.

STATEMENT DESIGN

The property’s interiors are currently being transformed by  Francis Sultana , a true maestro in the world of high-end interior design, in collaboration with Francesco Delogu of Delogu Architects. Sultana is one of the world’s foremost interior and furniture designers, working across both residential and commercial projects. His atelier studio is based in St James's, London in the same building as David Gill Gallery, where he is also Artistic Director. Sultana is loved for his unique ability to merge the residential requirements of a domestic space with often large-scale visual art, sculpture, and installation pieces. Sultana has frequented Capri for decades and has a great affinity for the island, its people and culture.  “Capri is an island that I love. Hotel La Palma is an iconic hotel that everyone will adore in its new lease of life. I wanted my design to reflect the very special relationship I have with Capri, that was love at first sight from my first visit in my early 20s; an island of romanticism and great aesthetes with a beauty and great inspiration for creativity, in all its forms,”  he comments.

Sultana has created the hotel foyer as an artistic statement, paying homage to Hotel La Palma’s original incarnation as a place where artists once stayed and would leave artworks behind them.  From the moment one enters the hotel, ceiling frescos of Roberto Ruspoli will immediately capture the attention. Keeping the space open, Sultana has sparingly added splashes of Mediterranean blue, green and turquoise – colors that dance around the interior. The curves of the ceiling are mirrored in the scalloped edges of the reception and concierge desks, and there is detailing in the planters, niches, and column capitals. Large palms in planters bring the outdoors in, nodding to Capri's love affair with the palm tree, that is also reflected in the hotel's new logo as an abstracted palm tree design. Sultana has also incorporated bespoke lighting and upholstered furniture exclusively designed for Hotel La Palma.

The bedrooms have been designed to be a perfect ‘home away from home’. Exquisite craftsmanship, luxurious materials and the utmost attention to detail create rooms that are tranquil, tactile, and ultimately welcoming – perfectly befitting the laidback Capri ‘dolce vita’ lifestyle.  Once again keeping the color palette neutral, Sultana has allowed the materials to speak for themselves. Bespoke furniture and carpets together with sophisticated lighting accent the bedrooms, that lead into marble and bronze-lined bathrooms. Decorative attention to detail has been paid to everything, right down to custom bathroom taps. Francis Sultana’s unmistakable signature design flows through the indoor bar & restaurant, pool terrace & bar, and the stand-out rooftop bar, that also carry the inspiration of Capri, always honoring the creativity of the Italian artisans that are helping to create this new landmark hotel.

HISTORY & HERITAGE OF HOTEL LA PALMA

Since 1822, Hotel La Palma – formerly known as Locanda Pagano – is the oldest hotel on Capri. The original owner, notary Giuseppe Pagano, hosted travelers in his villa for the pleasure of long conversations and often, his guests were artists, poets, writers, architects, painters, and musicians, all who showed their gratitude by painting the walls, writing poems, singing, and playing in what was dubbed the ‘Artists’ Hotel.’ A collective of creatives began to gather from all over the world who were inspirited by the genius loci, charmed by the smooth, familiar atmosphere of this eccentric hotel. When Hotel La Palma opens in April 2022, guests will once again receive the same warm Italian welcome.

HOW TO GET THERE

Capri can be accessed by air or by sea. The closest airport is Naples International Airport, located approximately 10 km from the city’s port. There is also a heliport in Anacapri and other airports include Ravello (20 minutes) and Rome (70 minutes). In addition, the island can be reached by ferry or hydrofoil in 25 minutes from Sorrento or Positano, in 50 minutes from Naples, and in one hour from Amalfi.

La Palma is located in Capri, an island in the Bay of Naples, off the Sorrentine Peninsula in Italy. A stone’s throw from the famous Piazza Umberto I, formerly known as Locanda Pagano, the establishment built in 1822 has been transformed by the very exclusive Oetker Collection in collaboration with the architect Francesco Delogu. The hotel has 50 rooms, including 18 suites, with balconies or terraces overlooking the Mediterranean sea.

The wow factor of Capri is everlasting - from Emperor Tiberius to Jackie Onassis, not to mention Mariah and Mr Valentino - this tiny, four-square-mile dot in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea still seduces with all the drama of its elemental landscape. After a capricious few decades of 'new destination' mania, the pandemic has definitely made us long for, and miss old favourites, especially the honeypot allure and old school glamour of say, Capri.

Those summer nights, as the Piccola Marina swirls with ambling crowds, soft lights and sweet nothings. It's a gentle, hand-holding, ice-cream-licking atmosphere down at La Piazzetta, which is also home to Bar Tiberio - the best spot for an aperitivo. Then, of course, there are the island’s architectural wonders, like Casa Malaparte (the fabulous modernist house that features in Jean Luc Goddard’s classic Le Mépris with Brigitte Bardot) and over in Anacapri, the glorious gardens or Villa San Michele. Or those sea views, particularly from La Fontelina beach club for the best front pew to admire the Faraglioni rocks, not to mention the best zucchini frites in the world. Or for that matter, the romantic wonder that is, Le Grotelle for the mozzarella grilled in lemon leaves and a dreamy terrace that really comes into its own at night time.

There hasn't been a hot new hotel opening of note on Capri since J.K.Place launched their fabulous slick boutique property back in 2008. So it was a very clever move by the hotel group Oetker Collection (whose lavish portfolio of properties include The Lanesborough, Le Bristol and the infamous Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc) to open their first Italian property on this mythical island, although we will have to wait until Hotel La Palma opens its doors in April 2022. Indeed, this is Capri’s first (and oldest) hotel, built in 1822, which will no doubt see it returned to its gloriously, unapologetically hedonistic best by Oetker Collection and owners, Reuben Brothers. During La Palma’s extensive face lift, the hotel’s room count is being drastically decreased from 80 to 50 rooms – including 18 suites – each complete with its own private balcony or terrace. The property’s interiors are being transformed by acclaimed interior designer Francis Sultana, who in collaboration with Francesco Delogu of Delogu Architects, will work his magic on the rooms and lobby, alongside the restaurant, pool, rooftop and beach club.

What more could you want, apart from sensuous food and wine, which you'll get? The hotel’s restaurant Gennaro’s, under the culinary direction of Chef Gennaro Esposito, will be the embodiment of la dolce vita : unpretentious, authentic Italian food that pays homage to the island’s Fifties heyday. Naturally, the caprese I’m sure will be out of this world. As will the views and general ambiance of Bianca; a glamorous rooftop restaurant and bar. But a real highlight of the hotel is their new La Palma beach club, just a short drive along Capri’s southern coast, in Piccola Marina, which will no doubt be an enticingly high octane affair and the hot ticket of summer 2022. It may sound excessive (and so far off...) but I would already start booking a room for July and August now.
