Marina Bay Sands more than trebles net revenue to $1.08 billion in Q3 as travel rebounds

marina bay sands tourism statistics

SINGAPORE - Riding on the back of a tourism recovery in Singapore, net revenue for Marina Bay Sands for the third quarter of this year jumped three-fold to US$756 million (S$1.08 billion) from US$249 million in the year-ago period.

Its adjusted property earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization also soared, by more than 22 times to hit US$343 million for the quarter, compared with just US$15 million a year ago.

The strong business recovery of the integrated resort helped lift the third-quarter results of parent Las Vegas Sands (LVS), as most of the group’s other properties saw declines in their net revenues.

Apart from MBS, LVS has five properties in Macau, including the iconic The Venetian Macao.

“While travel restrictions continued to impact our financial results this quarter, we were pleased to see further progress in Singapore’s recovery. We remain enthusiastic about the opportunity to welcome more guests back to our properties as greater volumes of visitors are able to travel to both Singapore and Macau,” said LVS chairman and chief executive Robert G. Goldstein.

Hotel occupancy for MBS also rose, to 96 per cent for the third quarter compared with 71.7 per cent a year ago. The revenue per available room also improved, from US$169 to US$494.

Net revenue for LVS rose nearly 18 per cent to US$1.01 billion, from US$857 million in the third quarter of last year. However, the group remained in the red, reporting a net loss from continuing operations of US$380 million for the quarter, down from US$594 million a year ago.

Macau’s stringent pandemic restrictions have largely remained in place for more than two years since the Covid-19 pandemic. Last month, the city’s Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng said it aims to open to mainland Chinese tour groups in November.

Meanwhile, Singapore has largely relaxed its Covid-19 restrictions and has removed the need for entry approvals, tests and quarantine for fully vaccinated travellers. Domestic rules have also been relaxed, with no cap on group sizes and masks to be worn only on public transport and selected areas, such as in hospitals.

The country saw about 2.2 million visitors in the third quarter this year, compared with just about 53,410 visitors in the same period last year.

Marina Bay Sands: the face of Singapore to the world

Flag USA

Marina Bay Sands is Singapore’s most iconic destination, offering guests the world's largest rooftop infinity pool, award-winning dining, and a wide range of shopping and entertainment options. In this interview, George Tanasijevich discusses the growth of tourism in Singapore, the role that Marina Bay Sands plays in the tourism ecosystem and how it continues to reinvent itself. He also talks about Singapore’s competitive advantages as a MICE tourism destination, and Marina Bay Sands as an ideal integrated resort for MICE events.

Singapore’s government has come up with a future economy report (CFE report) to ensure the country stays ahead of competition. As a foreign investor into the country, how important is it that Singapore continues with this transformation to increase its value proposition?

It is critically important. This is a country that does not have natural resources and so it needs to find different ways to compete. For many years it was financial services or biomedical research. When they identified tourism as an area that they were going to emphasize and use as a means to grow the economy and provide careers and jobs for Singaporeans, I think they put together a very comprehensive plan where the integrated resorts served as sort of an anchor element of that plan but by no means is it the only aspect of it. It's that type of planning that made it a very attractive destination for us to invest. It was clear to us that our industry was of great importance that they saw tremendous upside and the ability to grow it that there was going to be an alignment of interests between our organization and what the government was trying to achieve.

Then when you consider that in the context of Singapore's history since its inception and its reputation as an ethical place to do business, a predictable place to do business, a place that has a track record of economic growth and prosperity, that reduces a lot of the risk that you sometimes associate with investments of our scale or in markets that are newly emphasizing tourism or for the first time introducing casinos and integrated resorts.

We felt very confident that it was a great place to be over the long run. We invested heavily. We're looking for the opportunity to continue reinvesting in Marina Bay Sands and we're quite pleased to be here in Singapore. We like where we're positioned within Southeast Asia and in the midst of the ASEAN nations and so we think the future is quite bright.

In terms of economic impact, the tourism sector is quite significant today in Singapore. There were 17.4 million visitors in 2017 which represents 26 billion dollars’ worth of revenue. What is the potential for Singapore?

Singapore is planning for increased tourism and doing a good job at that. Terminal four recently opened at Changi Airport. In my view, Changi Airport is the greatest airport in the world. Terminal five is already in the planning stages and it's my understanding that it will effectively double the capacity of tourists that can come through Singapore once it is opened and completed. The ability to bring the people in is going to be enhanced. The infrastructure that's in place is constantly evolving and improving here.

We're sitting here at Marina Bay and while we have 2,600 hotel rooms in this building, we drive certainly more people to this market that we can house. There are 5,000 other hotel rooms right in this vicinity here and it's that kind of capacity that's very important for what we're trying to achieve here. The government will stay ahead of the curve and anticipate demand. I believe they’ll make sure that land becomes available to develop additional supply of hotel rooms and other tourism attractions as we go forward.

When we look at the origin of tourists in Singapore, we see that most come from within the region: China, Southeast Asia, Japan, and Australia. When we look outside market especially the US, the numbers are relatively low compared to other places and stand at 565,000 US tourists today. Why do you think this number is so low in comparison and what do you foresee the impact of for example Singapore Airlines opening an extra two direct lines to the US this year?

I think that the tourists who come in from around the region are always going to probably outnumber those who come from the US, but the US is a meaningful piece of our business. About 4% of the people who stay in our hotel rooms are from America. That's one quantitative way to look at it but then there's a qualitative way to look at it as well. The MICE business is a very critical element of our business plan here and it takes up a substantial amount of space within our building. It's a signature element of our business model. It's an area that we emphasize unlike anybody else in our industry because of our chairman Sheldon Adelson's involvement in the MICE industry for over 40 years. The way that we're able to tap into the US market and US-based companies to draw MICE events here is very, very important. For that reason alone, the US market is a very important one for us.

Marina Bay Sands was one of the two players to get the license for integrated resorts here in Singapore. Within Las Vegas Sands (LVS), Marina Bay Sands is one of the best performing resorts both in terms of retail and casino. What is the role Marina Bay Sands plays within your global operations but also within the tourism ecosystem in Singapore?

Las Vegas Sands is the only integrated resorts and casino company that has a presence in the three largest markets in the world which would be Las Vegas, Macau, and Singapore. The importance of Singapore to our company as piece of the global footprint can't be under-estimated. It’s critical to so many aspects of our business.

Certainly, Singapore was already known as a top destination for global MICE events before Marina Bay Sands opened but the Singapore government, again in its forward-thinking approach, recognized that the most attractive space to both tradeshow or event organizers and delegates who attend the events is MICE space that sits in an integrated resort. That's because of the convenience factor where you have everything situated under one roof. You don't have to jump on shuttle buses to get from your hotel to an exhibition hall somewhere on the other side of the city; you have unique venue spaces to hold special events outside of the MICE facility but within Marina Bay Sands.

A strong MICE industry helps enhance the reputation of the market as a place to do business. There are natural synergies from what's happening within our MICE facility and what is happening in the office towers around us. There's a real alignment of interest as I’ve mentioned before in terms of what we do for a living and what Singapore is trying to achieve.

Singapore and its integrated resorts are facing increased international competition to attract MICE tourism. How do you work to stay ahead of the curve?

A lot of the competition came as a result of the success of Singapore. It created a remarkable framework to attract major investment for the development of integrated resorts and put together a set of rules that govern the operation of the casino that was protective of social concerns but then also facilitated commercial and operational needs of ours. It worked for everyone. The architectural style of Marina Bay Sands was a first in our industry. We demonstrated the power of architectural design to serve as a draw for tourism and also as a means to attract the worldwide global attention from the media. As a result of this, Marina Bay Sands has served to become the strongest line on our corporate resume.

We feel that because of our unique business model that has an equal focus on leisure tourism and business tourism, combined with the strength of our balance sheet and the strength of our executive management team, we're able to go in and create something that is right for a particular market. That's the value add that we bring into any market. It's what you've seen here, it's been what has contributed to the growth to get beyond 17 million tourists here.

Marina Bay Sands has a variety of offerings ranging in activities from retail, to hotel, to casino, to restaurants, to the museum etc. What is the experience you want to create for your customers?

We want to offer a menu of activities that is so broad that nobody can experience them all in a single trip. With around 9 million square feet of space here, I think we’ve accomplished that. Over time, the building is always in a state of change. It's because we've recognized a trend in terms of what our customers are looking for and the experiences that they desire.

You'll see the restaurant line up changing. You'll see the tenants that we have in the mall sometimes changing. You'll see many tenants taking on bigger spaces than they originally signed up for because they see an opportunity to grow their business and maybe move from a standard-size shop to a flagship size store. We also are constantly looking all across the building and trying to identify areas that maybe aren't as productive as they could be and either come up with a way to improve them or replace them with another use.

With a building that has been open eight years and on an annual basis has had a hotel occupancy ranging from probably 95% to 99% across 2,600 rooms, it means your rooms are getting used every day. The need to reinvest in it, to keep it fresh, to keep it new is constantly there. We're always looking for opportunities to make sure that we're continuing to upgrade and increase the positive experiences that people have here.

On a personal note, the Marina Bay Sands combines your dedication to both Singapore and the Las Vegas Sand Group. What does MBS represent to you personally, and how would you like it to evolve?

I first came to Singapore to work for CapitaLand which is a government-linked real estate development company. It's a great organization with great people. It was a really wonderful place for me to be introduced to this market and to learn about Singapore, to understand how the place works and how the private sector and the government work like hand in glove to pursue mutual goals. From that experience, I think I was able to assist Las Vegas Sands in helping to create a plan for Marina Bay Sands that was going to be responsive to the needs, the demands, the requirements of the Singapore Tourism Board and the broader Singapore government.

We've put together something that is obviously a beautiful piece of architecture that now serves as a symbol of Singapore not just in terms of tourism but in terms of its forward-thinking approach and its innovative and resilient mindset. It probably stands alongside the Merlion as the symbols of Singapore and many of the marketing materials for both government and tourism and also the private sector as well. We're proud to occupy that position within this market.

From a personal standpoint, it's been gratifying to be able to do something for Singapore. A country that I love and that I call my home.

Marina Bay Sands

Standing at water’s edge, Marina Bay Sands (MBS) annually attracted 45 million visitors who came to lodge, to gamble, to shop, to relax, to attend meetings or weddings, to eat, or simply to gawk at the facilities. But as the integrated resort had become a temple of luxury recreation, could it also become a symbol of sustainable enterprise?

MBS's management hoped so. A small team led by Kevin Teng and backed by MBS leadership as well as the resort's parent company, Las Vegas Sands Corp., had worked hard to make operations and facilities more resource-efficient. The resort had garnered a Green Mark Platinum Award and was actively tackling its waste, water, and energy systems. The convention center also became the first facility in Southeast Asia to obtain ISO 20121 Sustainable Events Management System certification.

Beyond the physical plant, MBS looked to create user experiences that would reflect a commitment to sustainability. MBS had become a leader in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) industry in Southeast Asia. In 2013, MBS had started offering a customizable "Green Meeting" package. From five green events in 2013, the program had grown to 142 in 2017, grossing over S$30 million in revenue. The MICE team had set a goal of 500 green meetings annually by the year 2030. Teng had a particular interest in seafood, and worked with WWF to address procurement issues in the fishing sector, starting with removing red grouper, shark fin, and bluefin tuna from all menus in the resort. An estimated 75% of all seafood consumed in Singapore was deemed irresponsibly caught. In October 2017, MBS committed to source 100% of its top-ten species, and 50% of all of its seafood - about two million pieces per year - from responsible sources by 2020.

With some success under its belt, the MBS team was looking to make its operations more sustainable. Was the resort on the right path? What projects should MBS prioritize and how should they make decisions? How should MBS market its green event packages to consumers, and how should sustainable events be priced? To what extent did the green package have to extend beyond the meeting to include other aspects of the facility? Did a focus on sustainability make sense for a luxury brand associated with gambling? More globally, how could the MBS team ensure that the work they were doing would actually positively impact the ecosystems they hoped to preserve?

MARINA BAY SANDS

Marina Bay Sands (at Marina Bay) is an integrated resort owned by the Las Vegas Sands corporation. When its opened in 2010, it was touted as the world's most expensive standalone casino property at US$5.87 billion, including the land cost. Covering 20 hectares resort was designed by Moshe Safdie architects, the resort includes a 2,561-room hotel, a 120,000-square-meter (1,300,000 square foot) convention-exhibition centre, the 74,000-square-meter (800,000 square foot) The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands mall, a museum, two large theatres, "celebrity chef" restaurants, two floating Crystal Pavilions, art-science exhibits, and the world's largest atrium casino with 500 tables and 1,600 slot machines. The complex is topped by a 340-meter-long (1,120 foot) SkyPark with a capacity of 3,900 people and a 150 meter (490 foot) infinity swimming pool, set on top of the world's largest public cantilevered platform, which overhangs the north tower by 67 meters (220 ft). [Source: Wikipedia]

Marina Bay Sands is a magnificent destination for entertainment, business and shopping, delivering once-in-a-lifetime experiences. With its sloping towers (angled as steep as 26 degrees) and connecting legs at Level 23 to form a single building, the resort is one of the most complex establishments ever built. One of the largest art commissions ever completed as part of an integrated architectural process, the hotel will also be home to the Marina Bay Sands Art Path. The Art Path features seven large-scale art installations by five internationally renowned artists, creating shapes, moods and interior spaces that invite guests to visually and physically experience the artworks firsthand. Moshe Safdie designed the Art Path within the resort to highlight environmental influences such as light, water and wind, integrating architecture with the art of five artists including Zheng Chongbin, Antony Gormley and Sol LeWitt.

Marina Bay Sands was originally set to open in 2009, but its construction faced delays caused by escalating costs of material and labour shortages from the outset. The global financial crisis also pressured the owners, Las Vegas Sands, to delay its projects elsewhere to complete the integrated resort. Its owner decided to open the integrated resort in stages, and it was approved by the Singapore authorities. The resort and SkyPark were officially opened in June 2010 as part of a two-day celebration, following the casino's opening on April that year. The opening of Marina Bay Sands was held in February 2011.

The main attractions are the Sands SkyPark, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, The Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Bay Floral, Marina Bay Club, Marina Bay Sands Art Path, ArtScience Museum, Wonder Full, Notable restaurantsBread Street Kitchen, CUT, DB Bistro Moderne, Waku Ghin, Pizzeria, and Sky on 57. A partially destroyed version of the structure was featured in the 2015 video game Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, which takes place 10 years after a biochemical disaster rendered most of Singapore's eastern half inhospitable. The trailer of the 2016 movie Independence Day: Resurgence has a scene depicting the destruction of the property after being caught in the gravitational pull of a hovering alien spacecraft. It was also featured in the 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians, both in scenic B-roll of Singapore, as well as a setting towards the end of the film.

Background, Design and Investment of Marina Bay Sands

Marina Bay Sands is one of two winning proposals for Singapore's first integrated resorts, the other being the Resorts World Sentosa, which incorporates a family-friendly Universal Studios Theme Park (Universal Studios Singapore). The two large-scale resorts were conceived to meet Singapore's economic and tourism objectives for the next decade and will have 30-year casino licenses, exclusive for the first ten years. The project was put up for bids. In May 2006, Las Vegas Sands (LVS) was declared the winner with its business-oriented resort. [Source: Wikipedia]

Las Vegas Sands initially committed to invest US$2.83 billion in the project, not including the US$880 million for the 560,000 square meters (6,000,000 square feet) of land the resort was built on. With the escalating costs of materials, such as sand and steel, and labour shortages owing to other major infrastructure and property development in the country, Sheldon Adelson placed the total cost of the development at US$5.87 billion as of July 2009.

Las Vegas Sands declared the undertaking as "one of the world's most challenging construction projects and certainly the most expensive stand-alone integrated resort property ever built". It expects the casino to generate at least US$1 billion in annual profit. For the economy, Marina Bay Sands is projected to stimulate an addition of US$2.7 billion or 0.8% to Singapore's Gross Domestic Product by 2015, employing 10,000 people directly and 20,000 jobs being created in other industries. In April 2019, Sands announced a US$3.3 billion expansion of its Marina Bay Sands property in Singapore. The expansion will include the construction of a fourth hotel tower containing 1,000 luxury suites and a 15,000-seat arena.

The resort is designed by Moshe Safdie, who says it was initially inspired by card decks. The prominent feature of the design is the three hotel towers, which has 2,500 rooms and suites, and a continuous lobby at the base links the three towers. In addition to the hotel and the casino, other buildings include a 19,000 square meter (200,000 square foot) ArtScience Museum and a convention centre with 110,000 square meter (1,200,000 square foot) of space, capable of accommodating up to 45,000 people. The resort's architecture and major design changes along the way were also approved by its feng shui consultants, the late Chong Swan Lek and Louisa Ong-Lee. The main contractor was South-Korea-based Ssangyong Engineering and Construction.

The three towers are broader at the base and narrow as they rise. Each tower has two asymmetric legs, with a curved eastern leg leaning against the other, creating a significant technical challenge in its construction. Substantial temporary structures were necessary to support the legs of the tower while they were under construction, and required real-time monitoring for continual assessment and analyses in the course of their erection.

Sands SkyPark and Its Spectacular Rooftop Pool

Crowning the three hotel towers of Marina Bay Sands at 200 meters in the sky, the Sands SkyPark stretches longer than the Eiffel tower when laid down. The Sands SkyPark is also home to the world’s largest public cantilever housing a public observatory deck, lush gardens, jogiing pathsm exclusive restaurants such as The Sky on 58 and KU DÉ TA; with a 150-meter infinity-edged swimming pool to complete the luxurious experience.

The SkyPark covers 1.2 hectares (three acres) and has vast swimming pool and jogging paths. The structure bridges all three towers with a segment cantilevered off the north tower. The hull of the SkyPark was pre-fabricated off-site in 14 separate steel sections and then assembled on top of the towers. There are four movement joints beneath the main pools, designed to help them withstand the natural motion of the towers, and each joint has a unique range of motion. The total range of motion is 500 millimetres (20 inches). In addition to wind, the hotel towers are also subject to settlement in the earth over time, so engineers built and installed custom jack legs to allow for future adjustment at more than 500 points beneath the pool system. This jacking system is important primarily to ensure the infinity edge of the pool continues to function properly. [Source: Wikipedia]

The SkyPark pool is the world's longest elevated swimming pool at 146-meters (479 feet). It features a vanishing edge (a concept called an infinity pool) as situated 191 metres (627 feet) above ground. The pools are made up of 422,000 pounds (191,000 kg) of stainless steel and can hold 376,500 US gallons (1,425 cubic metres) of water. The SkyPark also has rooftop nightclubs such as Lavo and Cé La Vi, beautifully sculptured gardens, hundreds of trees and plants, and a public observatory deck on the cantilever with 360-degree views of the Singapore skyline. There’s no greater feeling than standing at the top of the world here. The infinity pool almost lets you swim in the clouds. The SkyPark is accessible only to hotel guests for security reasons.

At Waku Ghin, a restaurant by chef Tetsuya Wakuda, a Japanese-born Australian chef based in Sydney, one of the assistant chefs boasted of the restaurant's menu of freshly caught seafood, made possible because of its location. The assistant chef, who is Japanese, said he came all the way to Singapore via Australia because he was fascinated by Wakuda's gastronomic skills and wanted to work and learn under him.” [Source: Kumi Matsumaru, Daily Yomiuri, April 17, 2011]

Kumi Matsumaru wrote in Daily Yomiuri, “The asymmetrical museum reaches as high as 60 meters, as if flowering alongside the hotel's three 55-story towers. "There already are great museums in this country, but there had been no museums linking arts and science. Actually, I think this is the world's first museum mixing arts and science," Moshe Safdie, the renowned architect who is responsible for the resort's overall design, said a day before the opening. [Source: Kumi Matsumaru, Daily Yomiuri, April 17, 2011]

"These shapes...from the outside...some say lotus, some say a hand of welcome," the veteran architect said enthusiastically. Surely, the museum resembles a gigantic flower with 10 petals floating in a giant pond or even a massive hand with 10 fingers. "And, because of the geometry, every room inside has a slightly different shape. While the museum holds special content, the building itself expresses content."

Befitting the country's status as one of the four Asian Tigers, the museum's permanent collection showcases the nation's cultural and financial wealth, which along with temporary exhibitions are exhibited in 21 galleries covering 6,000 square meters. One of the four opening exhibitions is Shipwrecked: Tang Treasures and Monsoon Winds, which runs until the end of July. The event showcases 60,000 important marine archaeological finds of the late 20th century, mostly objects transported from China by a ninth-century Arab dhow whose wreck was found in 1998. Pointing at a large number of mass-produced ceramics and early examples of traditional blue-and-white china, Julian Raby, the exhibition's curator, proudly said the collection confirms the existence centuries ago of a maritime silk route between China and West Asia. Van Gogh Alive, scheduled to open Saturday, looks at his paintings from 1880 to 1890, accompanied by sights and sounds. The show runs until Nov. 6.In addition to exhibitions, the museum also will host related talks, tours and film screenings.” Opening Hours: 10:00am – 10:00pm daily, including public holidays; Website: http://www.marinabaysands.com ; Nearest MRT Stations: Bayfront, Promenade, or Marina Bay stations
