Euro Hockey Tour - a tournament of selected teams

The Euro Hockey Tour (EHT) is an annual ice hockey tournament available only to the Czech Republic, Finland, Switzerland, and Sweden national men's teams. The league was founded in 1996, and most teams use the competition as preparation for the upcoming World Championships or Olympic Games. The EHT consists of four tournaments: the Karjala Tournament in Finland, the Swiss Ice Hockey Games in Switzerland, the Sweden Hockey Games in Sweden, and the Czech Hockey Games in the Czech Republic. In the Euro Hockey Tour, there are 4 teams, and the number of matches in one tournament is 6 matches, totaling 24 matches.

Each team is awarded 3 points for a win in regulation time, 2 points for a win in overtime or after a shootout, 1 point for a loss in overtime or after a shootout, and 0 points for a loss in regulation time. When points are equal, the results of meetings between teams with the same number of points are first considered, then the difference in goals scored and conceded among the tied teams in the four tournaments is considered.

Best Euro Hockey Tour Team

As of 2023, Finland has won the Euro Hockey Tour 7 times, making it one of the most successful teams in the tournament's history. Finland is followed by Sweden with 5 wins and the Czech Republic with 3 wins, while Switzerland has not won the tournament yet.

When is the next tournament?

The next Euro Hockey Tour Carjala Cup tournament will take place from 9 to 12 November 2023. The matches will be played in Tampere, Finland, and will feature teams from Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.

How to get on the Euro Hockey Tour?

Participation in the Euro Hockey Tour is only open to national men's teams from the Czech Republic, Finland, Switzerland, and Sweden. Other teams cannot participate in this tournament. This tournament does not grant promotion to any league.

Best players and prize money

The Euro Hockey Tour all-time top ice-hockey scorer per season is Johan Davidsson, who holds the record for the most points scored, amassing 14 points for Sweden in the season 2006-2007.

The prize money for the winner of each tournament is €50,000, with second place receiving €30,000, third place €25,000, and fourth place €15,000. The EHT season winner receives an additional €75,000, the second place team receives €30,000, and the third place team receives €15,000.

  • Euro Hockey Tour

The Euro Hockey Tour (EHT) is an annual ice hockey tournament only open to the national men's teams of the Czech Republic , Finland , Switzerland and Sweden . Most of the teams use the competition as a preparation for the upcoming World Championships or Olympics , allowing less experienced players to collect valuable ice time in their national colours.

Playing format

Euro Hockey Tour consists of four tournaments:

  • Karjala Tournament in Finland
  • Swiss Ice Hockey Games in Switzerland , replacing the Channel One Cup in Russia following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine
  • Sweden Hockey Games in Sweden
  • Czech Hockey Games in the Czech Republic

Each team plays three games in each of the tournaments, giving a total of twelve games per team. After the four tournaments have finished, the teams are seeded according to their respective combined point total from all four tournaments.

In each tournament, five games are played in the host city, and one game in another participating country. For example, in the 2007 edition of Karjala Tournament, the game between Sweden and Russia was played in Jönköping, Sweden, rather than in Finland, who host the Karjala Cup. Every country is assigned one home game and one away game in those games.

Each team is given three points for a regulation-time win, two points for an overtime or shootout win, one point for a loss in overtime or shootout, and zero points for a loss in regulation time. In the four tournaments, if two or more teams end with the same number of points, they are seeded based on head-to-head results in games against the tied teams. In the EHT standings however, two or more teams tied in points are seeded based on the better goal difference.

Prize money

The prize money for the winner of each tournament is € 50,000 while the second seed gets €30,000, the third seed gets €25,000, and the fourth seed gets €15,000. The EHT season winner receives another €75,000, the team finishing second gets €30,000, and the team finishing third gets €15,000. [1]

Finals in previous years

Medal games were not played until the 2003–04 season. Before that, place order was determined by the tournament standings. The seasons 2003–04, 2004–05 and 2006–07 used a format where the first-placed and second-placed teams played a home-and-home two-game series for the EHT gold and silver medals, while the third-placed and fourth-placed teams played two games for the bronze. In 2005–06, the championship was determined by a single game played at the home of the first-place team. Since 2007–08, no EHT finals have been played.

Participating teams

Only four European teams compete in EHT:

Goal! UMass, NCAA men’s hockey in Springfield draws in $1.2M in spending

S PRINGFIELD — With more than 11,000 tickets sold, last month’s NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey regional generated an estimated $1.2 million for the local economy.

More than 500 Springfield hotel rooms in Springfield were booked and filled during the tournament March 28 and 30, MassMutual Center management said Tuesday in a statement.

The regional tourney featured the University of Denver, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Cornell University and the University of Maine. Eventual overall NCAA champion Denver defeated hometown UMass in 2-1 in double overtime March 28.

Nadim Kashouh, owner of Nadim’s Downtown Mediterranean Grill on Main Street across from the MassMutual Center, said he noticed the bigger crowds that weekend.

“It brought people to the city,” he said. “Anything that is going on, either at MassMutual or Symphony Hall, helps us.”

The statement from the MassMutual Center cited the support of the Business Improvement District and the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau, as well as local restaurants White Lion Brewing, Nadim’s, Wahlburgers, Jackalope and Theodore’s.

Jackalope has since announced that it has been sold, and the new owners will reopen the space in a different theme.

Inside the MassMutual Center, The Fanfest offered many activities for attendees, including interactive experiences with the Forest Park Zoo and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Attendees also enjoyed life-size masks and slapshot inflatables from the Thunderbirds hockey team.

“It was truly thrilling for the MassMutual Center to host our first-ever NCAA Division I men’s hockey regional tournament,” said Sean Dolan, general manager of the arena. “We are grateful for the support from so many of our community partners, and we are looking forward to hosting similar events in the future.”

The NCAA, headed by former Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, lists hockey tournament sites for the next two years. Springfield is not on the list, but Worcester and the DCU Center will host a regional in 2026 with Holy Cross as the sponsor.

“It was a great experience to collaborate with the MassMutual Center and American International College to play host to the NCAA Regional event in Springfield. Western Massachusetts is full of hockey fans, and that was showcased throughout the tournament weekend. We look forward to working together to host similar events in the future,” said University of Massachusetts Amherst Deputy Athletic Director for External Operations Jeff Smith.

Coyotes fans face the end in Arizona with anger toward Salt Lake City, appreciation of hockey’s impact

In the nhl team’s final game in tempe, fans displayed various stages of grief about losing their beloved franchise..

(Ross D. Franklin | AP) Arizona Coyotes season-ticket holders comfort one another as time expires in the team's game against the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday in Tempe, Ariz., Wednesday, April 17, 2024. The Coyotes won 5-2. Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo agreed to sell the franchise's hockey operations to Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith, who intends to move the team to Salt Lake City.

Tempe, Ariz. • The fans came early to the funeral.

With three hours left before the opening faceoff of the Arizona Coyotes ’ last game in the state it has called home for 27 years, fans started to arrive outside the gates of the small, 5,000-seat stadium on the campus of Arizona State University.

This funeral at Mullett Arena had a bounce castle, beer pong tables, and even a booth set up to shave mullet haircuts into the scalps of the truly dedicated — but these inanities mostly went unused.

Instead, people grieved. Some stood outside their cars in the arena’s parking garage, tailgating for the game. Some gathered at the point closest to the arena’s entrance they were allowed. Many cried. But they all told stories, sharing with others who had this passion in their lives: NHL hockey.

(Ross D. Franklin | AP) Arizona Coyotes players acknowledge the fans after the final whistle in Tempe Wednesday. Team owner Alex Meruelo agreed to sell franchise's hockey operations to Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith, who intends to move the team to Salt Lake City.

This week, that passion was taken away by team owner Alex Meruelo’s decision to end this Coyotes’ chapter in Arizona. The NHL has “deactivated” the Coyotes and transferred all of its players and hockey assets to Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith , who will move the team to Utah in time for next October’s season opener.

Utah’s gain is Arizona’s pain. And while our state looks to welcome NHL hockey to our area — for which Utahns are understandably thrilled — it’s worth understanding the toll it will take elsewhere.

Anger among the grieving

To be sure, the primary emotion for many Coyotes fans was anger.

“It was a big blow to a fan base who’s been super mistreated,” said Luke Warren, of the Coyotes Corner podcast. “For years, I mean, just league-wide we’ve been at the end of so many jokes, with the arena instability and our ownership. It’s just been a mess.”

Fans felt betrayed by Meruelo’s lack of transparency about the process. As recently as April 4, the team released new renderings of its proposed Phoenix-area stadium plans, leading fans to grow hope that they might have a permanent home in Arizona. Instead, just six days later, reports surfaced that the team being moved to Salt Lake City was the likely option.

(Ross D. Franklin | AP) Arizona Coyotes fans start to find their seats at Mullett Arena prior to the team's game.

That anger could be seen in signs around the arena — one, for example, said that Meruelo was “losing his religion” by moving the team. Others were befuddled that Meruelo’s stadium plan on the Phoenix and Scottsdale border wasn’t as solid as Meruelo and the franchise made it seem. When the national anthem was sung, a substantial number of fans yelled to echo “Still there!” upon the words’ recitation.

But that anger was also targeted toward Salt Lake City, the Coyotes’ new home. “Salt Lake Sucks” might have been the night’s second-most common chant behind only “Let’s Go Coyotes.” I overheard one fan complaining about peeling numbers on his jersey; he jokingly said it must be “Salt Lake City manufacturing” causing the defect.

The players, though, disagreed with the Salt Lake City-oriented negativity.

“Among the group, obviously, there’s no hate towards Salt Lake City,” winger Josh Doan said. “Because they’re welcoming us with open arms. ... The people there had nothing to do with it.”

Will Arizona’s youth hockey suffer? Will Utah’s boom?

Hockey fans in Arizona have repeated one catchphrase over and over again over the last two weeks, as their franchise’s future has been in increasing doubt: “Hockey belongs in the desert.”

It’s meant to be a knowing wink to the haters: The icy sport is obviously an awkward contrast to the blistering heat here, at least on paper. But after over a generation in Arizona, the Coyotes have built a passionate fanbase that has made hockey a cultural presence in the state.

(Ross D. Franklin | AP) Arizona Coyotes' Dylan Guenther skates past fans as players warm up. The Coyotes are moving to Salt Lake City in a deal that could be signed less than 24 hours after the game. Hockey could return, perhaps within five years, but the stark reality is this is the end for the foreseeable future.

Perhaps the shining jewel of Arizona hockey: its burgeoning youth program. Auston Matthews, the 2016 No. 1 pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs stunned observers this NHL season by scoring 69 goals — the most by any NHL player in 28 seasons. The 26-year-old is a product of the Arizona Coyotes’ presence. “I lived about five minutes from the practice rink the Coyotes used, so there were lots of options, a lot of different programs. I just picked one and got into it,” Matthews told SportsNet .

On Wednesday, the state of youth hockey was a major worry at Mullett Arena. Of the 5,000 in attendance, a significant portion were youth hockey players who wanted to see their favorite players for the last time in person, many brought signs to that effect. “I love hockey — and I’m a youth goalie” read one.

The pipeline might be the lasting legacy of the Coyotes in Arizona. If, as rumored, Meruelo retains an option to return a separate expansion franchise to Arizona, he may be able to continue that legacy in the decades to come.

But the team’s players hope to see a similar positive impact on Utah’s youth hockey scene when the team moves up north. Currently, only one Utahn is in the NHL: 37-year-old Trevor Lewis on the Los Angeles Kings . After the game, every Coyotes player interviewed expressed an interest in helping to grow Utah’s youth hockey scene when the team moves.

A mutual appreciation

It was the fans’ show of appreciation for the Coyotes players throughout the night that was most moving.

First of all, the sacrifices people made to be in Tempe were remarkable. I spoke to fans from Ohio, Florida, Massachusetts, and even New York who bought airfare in the last week to make sure they were at the Coyotes’ last NHL game in Arizona.

The game tickets were probably more expensive than the flights. Checked just before game time, the cheapest tickets — not seats, but standing-room-only tickets — were available for $723. Some were season ticket holders, including those who had been supporting the team since they moved to the area in 1996. Some spoke of getting to watch Wayne Gretzky coach the team in the mid-00s.

(Ross D. Franklin | AP) Arizona Coyotes' Logan Cooley, right, Michael Carcone (53) and Josh Doan arrive on the ice prior to the team's game.

As players participated in pre-game warmups, signs thanking the Coyotes lined the arena’s glass. Some hoped to talk to a favorite player, or get a game-used stick or puck. Others made collages of their own memories of the team, moments that they wanted to give back.

Online, fans did the same. One prominent outlet covering the team asked fans to submit their best photos or memories of the Coyotes on Twitter, and hundreds of fans responded. They’re worth looking through .

And throughout the night, the Coyotes answered the bell. Fans were actually allowed into the arena 15 minutes ahead of the typical time on the final night. For the final two minutes of game action, fans gave the team a standing ovation. After the game ended, it took hours for fans to be ushered out — the organization allowed the time to say goodbye.

The Coyotes’ players also showed a remarkable understanding of the moment. Before the game, they signed some memorabilia as they left the ice, but postgame is where they really shined. They’d autograph a stack of hats, throw them out to the crowd, then go back to staffers to get more to throw. Fans lined up to receive players’ game-worn jerseys; sticks were thrown over the boards to be collected. Most fans who stayed left with not just one piece of memorabilia, but multiple.

“The fans were really unbelievable,” All-Star winger Clayton Keller said. “They’ve supported us through ups and downs and all the noise. They always have our backs.”

These players have won over Coyotes fans’ hearts. A perennially losing franchise, the Coyotes finally are looking up with a number of intriguing youth players getting playing time in the season’s final throes. The team has led the NHL in goals since March.

It’s for that reason that some Coyotes fans say they’ll follow the team in Utah. Warren, the podcaster, says he’s among them. “We suffered to watch these guys,” he said. “It’d be crazy not to go support them wherever they are.” Perhaps the largest sign at Mullett Arena on Wednesday offered the same sentiment: “Stay or leave — we will follow.”

As Wednesday’s funeral showed, the Coyotes have lived out their life in Arizona.

Maybe Salt Lake City can be hockey heaven.

Penguins’ Jeff Carter retires after 19 seasons: ‘It was time’

COLUMBUS, OHIO - MARCH 30: Jeff Carter #77 of the Pittsburgh Penguins takes a break during a stoppage in play against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on March 30, 2024 in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by Jason Mowry/Getty Images)

ELMONT, N.Y. — Jeff Carter retired from the NHL in a memorable way, scoring a goal in his final game Wednesday night.

“I kind of knew coming in at the start of the year that this was it,” Carter said after scoring on the power play in the third period of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 5-4 loss to the New York Islanders at UBS Arena.

“It was time.”

Carter, 39, was joined in New York by his wife, children and other family members. To his surprise, the Islanders requested he take a victory lap that is normally reserved for home team players.

“That was nice,” Carter said. “Bo (Horvat) actually came up to me and said a couple of the guys wanted to talk after. That was really nice of them. There’s guys on that other side that have been around for a while, too — and I’ve played against quite a bit.

“A lot of respect for those guys.”

A classy move for a classy guy. pic.twitter.com/6OdoBgH2dc — Pittsburgh Penguins (@penguins) April 18, 2024

Carter played for four franchises during his 19 seasons, including a couple of Stanley Cup champions while with the Los Angeles Kings from 2011-12 through 2020-21, when he was acquired by the Penguins at the trade deadline.

Once a fierce rival of the Penguins’ long-serving core of Sidney Crosby , Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang , Carter was warmly embraced from his first days in Pittsburgh. He knew Crosby from their time together with Team Canada at the 2006 IIHF World Championships and 2014 Winter Olympics, and quickly won over all members of the Penguins organization upon his arrival.

A consistent goal-scorer in his prime, Carter scored at least 25 goals eight times. He finished with 851 regular-season points.

The postseason is where Carter raised his profile.

He produced 47 goals and 84 points in 133 playoff games, including 18 goals over the Kings’ Cup runs in 2012 and 2014. He recorded eight goals in 13 playoff games with the Penguins, who missed the playoffs the past two seasons.

Carter took the opening faceoff against the Islanders on Wednesday night. Crosby, the Penguins captain, usually does that, but he moved to the wing for that draw — an early signal that Carter was near the end of his playing days.

The Penguins, especially Crosby and Malkin when on the power play, tried to set up Carter for scoring chances throughout. His goal pulled the Penguins even with the Islanders in the third period, and Carter scored it from one of his favorite spots — camped out near the crease.

“When (coach Mike Sullivan) put me out there, I knew I wasn’t leaving the net,” Carter said of his chance to play on the top power-play unit. “You could tell they were trying to get it there every chance they could.”

Carter had not told many people about his retirement plans, though he admitted Wednesday night that his children’s constant presence in the Penguins’ dressing room after practices and games was a tell. His family moved from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh last August, and Carter did not rule out possibly joining the Penguins in some capacity.

But he has plans before taking on any front-office role.

“I’m gonna be a dad,” he said, grinning with a missing tooth. “You miss a lot being a hockey player. You’re in and out in a way. You’re not really there, you know?

“My family — all hockey families — they sacrifice a lot for us to live out our dreams. I’m going to be home and be a dad for a while, and we’ll figure it out from there.”

Jeff Carter leads the Penguins off the ice pic.twitter.com/4rwSvrEZ37 — Josh Yohe (@JoshYohe_PGH) April 18, 2024

Crosby, who failed to score on a late penalty shot against the Islanders, lamented not affording Carter a “chance to play a little longer.”

“We played together for a long time in different points from a younger age,” Crosby said of Carter. “I have total respect for him. Incredible teammate.”

Crosby and Malkin, specifically, waged memorable battles against Carter when the latter played for the Philadelphia Flyers at the start of his career. For a time, Carter and Mike Richards were viewed in Philadelphia as the Flyers’ answer to Crosby and Malkin in Pittsburgh.

“I 100 percent have respect for him, ever since the Philly series in 2008 and 2009,” Malkin said of those memorable playoff battles between the Penguins and Flyers. “He was so strong, so fast. He was hard to play against. Same with when he was with Team Canada. I’m just glad that I got to be his teammate.”

There was no ill will when Carter became a Penguin, after waving a contractual clause so the Kings could trade him to Pittsburgh four years ago. In fact, head equipment manager Jon Taglianetti called former Penguins great Paul Coffey seeking his blessing so that Carter could wear his longtime No. 77 with the Penguins.

“You get traded, you don’t know to expect, right?” Carter said Wednesday night, recalling that trade.

“I still remember walking in that first day and it was like I was there for five years. It’s an unbelievable group here — high-character guys that accepted me and my family right away. It really is a family here.”
