M. Night Shyamalan's THE VISIT Trailer Is All Kinds of Crazy

I see old people.

Man Kathryn Hahn 's character reallllly needs a vacation in this trailer for The Visit . She looks like she's having so much fun while her kids are trapped with their insanely creepy grandparents. It looks like writer/director  M. Night Shyamalan is returning to the big screen with the express intent of declaring all out war on the elderly, and I like it. I remember hating staying the night at my grandparents as a kid, and this trailer somehow is able to take that internal itchiness and dial it up into some outright weirdo horror. I also like how the traditional "jump scare" moment towards the end of the trailer is actually a misdirect that leads into an archly funny line.

Check out The Visit trailer below, along with the first images. The film also stars  Deanna Dunagan , Peter McRobbie , Ed Oxenbould and Olivia DeJonge . It was produced by Jason Blum and  Marc Bienstock . It hits theaters on September 11th, 2015.

Here's the official synopsis for The Visit :

Writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable) and producer Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, The Purge and Insidious series) welcome you to Universal Pictures’ The Visit. Shyamalan returns to his roots with the terrifying story of a brother and sister who are sent to their grandparents’ remote Pennsylvania farm for a weeklong trip. Once the children discover that the elderly couple is involved in something deeply disturbing, they see their chances of getting back home are growing smaller every day.

While Shyamalan doesn’t reinvent the wheel with “The Visit”, he does show the creative flourishes that made him a respected name and overnight success in the horror-thriller genre.

The Visit | Ratings & Reviews

Rotten tomatoes® rating, audience score rating.

"M. Night Shyamalan returns to thriller filmmaking in the style of low-budget impresario Jason Blum with mixed results."

Variety

"A bizarre, conflicted mess, horrifying when it’s trying to be funny, oddly appealing when it turns the screws."

Time Out

"Shyamalan has a fine eye and a nice, natural way with actors, and he has a talent for gently rap-rap-rapping on your nerves."

The New York Times

"This tardy rehash of fairytale tropes finds sometime genre innovator M Night Shyamalan clinging in abject desperation to the found-footage movement’s careworn coattails."

The Guardian

"No spoilers, except to say that cheap thrills can still be a blast."

Rolling Stone

"Well cast and strong on setting. But the dull thudding that resounds isn’t part of its effective aural design..."

Hollywood Reporter

"An utterly enjoyable and oddly affecting experience that's not only Shyamalan's best film in years but also a cracking thriller in its own right."

FilmInk

"Shyamalan finds freshness in familiar horror tropes. After some big budget misfires, it's great to see him go back to his smaller, scarier roots."

The Ending Of The Visit Explained

The Visit M. Night Shyamalan Olivia DeJonge Deanna Dunagan

Contains spoilers for  The Visit

M. Night Shyamalan is notorious for using dramatic twists towards the endings of his films, some of which are pulled off perfectly and add an extra layer of depth to a sprawling story (hello, Split ). Some of the director's other offerings simply keep the audience on their toes rather than having any extra subtext or hidden meaning. Shyamalan's 2015 found-footage horror-comedy  The Visit , which he wrote and directed, definitely fits in the latter category, aiming for style over substance.

The Visit follows 15-year-old Becca Jamison (Olivia DeJonge) and her 13-year-old brother Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) when they spend the week with their mother's estranged parents, who live in another town. Loretta (played by WandaVision 's Kathryn Hahn ) never explained to her children why she separated herself away from her parents, but clearly hopes the weekend could help bring the family back together.

Although The Visit occasionally toys with themes of abandonment and fear of the unknown, it wasn't particularly well-received by critics on its initial release, as many struggled with its bizarre comedic tone in the found-footage style. So, after Tyler and his camera record a number of disturbing occurrences like Nana (Deanna Dunagan) projectile-vomiting in the middle of the night and discovering "Pop Pop"'s (Peter McRobbie) mountain of used diapers, it soon becomes clear that something isn't right with the grandparents.

Here's the ending of  The Visit  explained.

The Visit's twist plays on expectations

Because Shyamalan sets up the idea of the separation between Loretta and her parents very early on — and doesn't show their faces before Becca and Tyler meet them — the film automatically creates a false sense of security. Even more so since the found-footage style restricts the use of typical exposition methods like flashbacks or other scenes which would indicate that Nana and Pop Pop aren't who they say they are. Audiences have no reason to expect that they're actually two escapees from a local psychiatric facility.

The pieces all come together once Becca discovers her  real grandparents' corpses in the basement, along with some uniforms from the psychiatric hospital. It confirms "Nana" and "Pop-Pop" escaped from the institution and murdered the Jamisons because they were a similar age, making it easy to hide their whereabouts from the authorities. And they would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those meddling kids.)

However, after a video call from Loretta reveals that the pair aren't her parents, the children are forced to keep up appearances — but the unhinged duo start to taunt the siblings. Tyler in particular is forced to face his fear of germs as "Pop Pop" wipes dirty diapers in his face. The germophobia is something Shyamalan threads through Tyler's character throughout The Visit,  and the encounter with "Pop Pop" is a basic attempt of showing he's gone through some kind of trial-by-fire to get over his fears.

But the Jamison kids don't take things lying down: They fight back in vicious fashion — a subversion of yet another expectation that young teens might would wait for adults or law enforcement officers to arrive before doing away with their tormentors.

Its real message is about reconciliation

By the time Becca stabs "Nana" to death and Tyler has repeatedly slammed "Pop-Pop"'s head with the refrigerator door, their mother and the police do arrive to pick up the pieces. In a last-ditch attempt at adding an emotional undertone, Shyamalan reveals Loretta left home after a huge argument with her parents. She hit her mother, and her father hit her in return. But Loretta explains that reconciliation was always on the table if she had stopped being so stubborn and just reached out. One could take a domino-effect perspective and even say that Loretta's stubbornness about not reconnecting and her sustained distance from her parents put them in exactly the vulnerable position they needed to be for "Nana" and "Pop-Pop" to murder them.

Loretta's confession actually mirrors something "Pop-Pop" told Tyler (before his run-in with the refrigerator door): that he and "Nana" wanted to spend one week as a normal family before dying. They should've thought about that before murdering a pair of innocent grandparents, but here we are.

So, is The Visit  trying to say that if we don't keep our families together, they'll be replaced by imposters and terrify our children? Well, probably not. The Visit tries to deliver a message about breaking away from old habits, working through your fears, and stop being so stubborn over arguments that don't have any consequences in the long-run. Whether it actually sticks the landing on all of those points is still up for debate.

Netflix releases official trailer for Jennifer Lopez mech combat sci-fi film 'Atlas' (video)

The full trailer of Netflix's 'Atlas' is a bit spoiler-y, but does a better job of selling the Jennifer Lopez-led sci-fi adventure.

A giant mech robot standing on a desolate landscape.

With "Atlas," Netflix is clearly embracing bombastic summer spectacle in the vein of Amazon's " The Tomorrow War ." That is, 'original' sci-fi flicks with hefty production budgets and killer casts to make up for the pastiche of well-trodden ideas. After 20th Century Studios' stunningly-crafted " The Creator " bombed in theaters last year, maybe these should be released via streaming for the foreseeable future.

After a ho-hum "Atlas" teaser (beyond the striking visuals) released for Brad Peyton's Atlas – which has an interesting cast to say the least – Netflix has put the pedal to the metal in the official trailer for the upcoming sci-fi action-adventure movie.

You won't be hearing us complain about mechs blowing stuff up in outer space though, and this look at the movie solidifies the feeling that it might deliver on that front quite well. You can watch the official trailer below:

This means that Apple isn't the only streaming giant doubling down on science fiction and space-centric content (see " Constellation " and " Fly Me to the Moon "); this year Netflix has already put out the Adam Sandler-led drama " Spaceman " and David Benioff and D. B. Weiss' huge " 3 Body Problem " series adaptation, with more to come.

Related: The best sci-fi movies and TV shows to stream on Netflix

The seemingly thin story of "Atlas" follows the titular Atlas Shepherd (Jennifer Lopez), "a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence" who wants to help capture a renegade AI with whom she shares a troubled past.

This hunt takes Atlas (and less fortunate troops) to another planet where the AI named Harlan has taken refuge and is plotting to launch another strike against Earth. The twist? She'll have to get over her distrust of robots and team up with a mech-bound AI named Smith to get the job done.

At its core, it's all strongly reminiscent of Titanfall 2 's story campaign, and we mean that as a compliment. However, the surrounding world-building and plotting don't look too strong. Again, our expectations aren't super high, but it'd be nice to get a robust sci-fi movie out of this one. At the very least, Brad Peyton's knack for strong visuals after making up for "San Andreas" and "Rampage"'s paper-thin scripts is on display here.

Netflix also shared a simple but imposing poster to go with this trailer that's all about the protagonists and reminds subscribers that Atlas drops on May 24 :

A woman in a black tank top looks fearfulness as she confidently strides forwards. Behind her is a giant mech robot.

 — Wander into the wasteland for Prime Video's live-action 'Fallout' series (trailer)

— '3 Body Problem:' Watch final trailer for Netflix's alien invasion saga (video)

Joining J.Lo as Atlas Shepherd, the cast has Simu Liu ("Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," "Barbie") as the rogue AI Harlan, Sterling K. Brown (" The Predator ") as Colonel Elias Banks, Gregory James Cohan ("The VelociPastor") voicing the friendly AI Smith, Abraham Popoola ("The Great") as Casca Decius, Lana Parrilla ("Once Upon a Time") as Val Shepherd, and the always reliable Mark Strong ("Kingsman") as General Jake Boothe.

Brad Peyton directs a script originally written by Leo Sardarian ("StartUp") and later rewritten by Aron Eli Coleite ("Ultimate X-Men" comic books). The cinematography was handled by John Schwartzman (" Jurassic World "). Andrew Lockington ("Argo") is the composer behind the original soundtrack.

Will Forte's new Netflix crime series, Bodkin, looks like a hit: Here's what you need to know

Bodkin is one of the biggest new Netflix shows coming in May 2024 . It's not going to beat Bridgerton season 3, but it will likely be bigger than every other Netflix original released during the month.

The series is set in Ireland and follows Will Forte's character, Gilbert, a true crime podcaster, who arrives in a small town to investigate a years-old disappearance. While innocent on the surface, there are secrets here that would rather stay buried.

We don't have a lot of information to go off yet, but I've been doing this for a long time. I'll be shocked if Bodkin isn't the second-most popular Netflix show of the month when it drops in May. It has all the makings of a buzzy Netflix series.

Crime/murder? Check. Great cast? Check. Weird vibes, comedy elements, and an intriguing setting? Check, check, and check. You'll see what I mean when I get to the trailer, but it just looks -- checks notes -- good.

Creator Jez Scharf, who explored the idea of a story about true crime podcasters, TUDUM that he's intrigued by absurdity as a writer and wanted to display that in the series.

My personal interest as a writer is always in absurdity, really — in the idea that life is broadly absurd. Things that are sad are often funny, and vice versa. I think, having spent a lot of time in Ireland, there’s a certain acceptance of that kind of tone there.

Sign me up for this kind of series every day of the week! Let's get into the important details about the show and what viewers need to know before watching.

Release date

Bodkin isn't available to stream on Netflix yet! Bodkin premieres on Netflix on Thursday, May 9. The series will be released at midnight ( PT), which is 3 a.m. ET.

That's 8 a.m. GMT, so if you live in Ireland, your binge-watch starts in the morning. If this show is as good as it appears to be in the trailer, you'll probably watch all eight episodes in one sitting.

Netflix announced the main cast of Bodkin recently. Check out the list of stars and who they're playing:

  • Will Forte as Gilbert
  • Siobhán Cullen as Dove
  • Robyn Cara as Emmy
  • Chris Walley as Sean O’Shea
  • David Wilmot as Seamus

We don't know the full cast of the series yet, but based on the trailer, there are a lot more than five important characters in the series!

Netflix recently shared the synopsis for Bodkin. The synopsis reads:

"Bodkin is a darkly comedic thriller about a motley crew of podcasters who set out to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in an idyllic, coastal Irish town. But once they start pulling at threads, they discover a story much bigger and weirder than they could have ever imagined."

If you're keeping track at home, Bodkin is a deeply satirical, dark comedy about podcasters visiting an Irish town to solve three murders? It doesn't get much better than this, Netflix viewers.

And, here's a look at the official trailer for Bodkin!

The trailer begins with a door being slammed in the faces of the podcasters. We meet our three podcasters: Gilbert, Emmy, and Dove, who are new to the small town of Bodkin. We also learn the central mystery: three people disappeared during the Samhain festival years ago, but no one seems to be interested in finding out what happened to them. That's what our podcasters are trying to get to the bottom of with a lot of resistance from the locals.

There's a lot going on in the trailer. You just have to watch it to see all of the potential for criminal mischief.

Most importantly, the trailer ends with Will Forte's character saying, "I came to Bodkin expecting a simple cold case. What if the cold case isn't cold?"

Boom goes the dynamite. What a trailer! We've all seen new trailers for Stranger Things or Outer Banks , if you're me, and been excited to watch the series after, but it doesn't get much better Bodkin. This trailer is awesome!

Netflix shares behind-the-scenes look at Bodkin

Heading into the series premiere, Netflix also shared a behind-the-scenes look at the new series from the cast and creative team of Bodkin. You'll see all five stars share what you need to know about the new series, along with creator Jez Scharf.

In the featurette, Scharf says something very interesting about stories and people, which appears to be the heart of Bodkin.

Stories are never as simple as they seem. People are never as simple as they seem. At every turn, you expectation is slightly pulled from under you.

Think you know where Bodkin is going? You don't! That's what it sounds like anyway.

Is Bodkin based on a true story?

No, Bodkin isn't based on a true story, although it really seems like it is! That's by design, according to Scharf. He mentioned to TUDUM that he wanted the series to feel like a true crime series, but he also specifically avoided details about real crimes to make sure the series was not based on or referencing anything that actually happened in real life.

The mystery itself, we worked very hard to find something that is in no way adjacent to a real true crime story. The fictionality of it was very deliberate.

I love this take! Obviously, there are some true crime stories that do need to be told to honor victims, shed light on failing institutions, and other reasons. In general, we've definitely missed the mark with true crime, as a society, failed victims and their families, and given in to our morbid curiosity when it comes to these things.

Look no further than Netflix's Baby Reindeer , which is based on Richard Gadd's experience with a stalker. Gadd, who also stars in the series, has asked fans not to try to find out the identity of the person whom his stalker was based on in the series, but there are still people trying to find and, most importantly, share that information.

Anyway, Bodkin is not based on a true story. The town is not a real place. You can, however, visit the filming locations for the series. It was filmed in Wicklow, West Cork, Dublin, and other locations in Ireland. We'll share more about the filming locations after we see the series.

Watch Bodkin on Netflix on Thursday, May 9!

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in "Anyone But You."

Anyone But You finally made its Netflix streaming debut, which is exciting news for rom-com fans everywhere. As you watch the movie, you might be wondering where Anyone But You was filmed and if you can visit the breathtaking beaches, cliffs, and other locations in real life.

Loosely adapted from Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” Anyone But You stars Glen Powell as Ben, a finance bro who has an incredible first date with Bea (Sydney Sweeney), a law student uncertain about her career. After spending the night, Bea panics and leaves without telling him. When she realizes she made a mistake and returns to his apartment, she overhears Ben saying that she is a “nothing” to him.

Years later, they unexpectedly reunite at a destination wedding in Australia for Bea’s sister, who is marrying Ben’s friend. When their exes show up, they pretend to be a couple—and the rest is history. The film was directed and co-written by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind rom-coms like Easy A and Friends with Benefits . It was released in December and had an impressive run at the box office, surpassing $88 million domestically and $219 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo .

After its release, the movie went viral on TikTok as audience goers reacted to the film’s credit sequence, which features the cast dancing and singing to Natasha Bedingfield’s nostalgic 2004 hit “Unwritten,” a song highlighted throughout the film. There were also rumors of an off-screen romance between Powell and Sweeney that helped promote the film, as well as the actors’ flirty publicity tour and Sydney Sweeney’s SNL monologue .

Now, Anyone But You is back in the limelight after the film was released on Netflix on April 23, quickly becoming the No. 1 movie on the platform in the U.S. after just one day.

The Best Romantic Comedy Of The Last Year Just Hit Netflix

Apple iphone 16 unique all new design promised in new report, the world s best beers according to the 2024 world beer cup, where was anyone but you filmed.

Anyone But You was filmed in parts of Australia around New South Wales and Sydney. Director Will Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted the film set in Sydney because he had “really fallen in love with the city” and liked it so much he moved his family there.

“Almost every time you shoot a movie in Sydney, you have to pretend it’s somewhere else and frame out the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. For Anyone But You , I thought, “Why do that?” We actually wrote this movie 100 percent for Sydney — very specific to the destination,” Gluck wrote.

The director continued, “We flew helicopters all over — seeing the city from that vantage point is stunning — and landed one at the Opera House, shut down the Harbour Bridge, filmed at the Queen Victoria Building, and shot for two weeks overlooking Bondi Beach,” he said. “We spent a week on a boat in Sydney Harbour shooting a scene where they’re stranded on a buoy, but you can’t have humans in the water without a shark cage, so we had to have one the whole time. You pinch yourself. It’s so unbelievable we were actually doing these things.”

Here are a few specific Anyone But You filming locations you can visit in person.

Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is a focal point in Anyone But You. The 20th-century architectural landmark serves as a gorgeous backdrop for big moments, including the end scene when Ben passionately kisses Bea, who is standing at the top of the steps. You can visit the performing arts center for special events and tours.

Marks Park, Bondi

Located in Sydney's northern suburbs, the wedding scene in Anyone But You was filmed at Marks Park overlooking Bondi Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The cliff-top park is open to the public and has fitness stations, a playground, and some shaded areas.

Many of Anyone But You ’s breathtaking beach scenes were filmed around Palm Beach. Director Will Gluck told THR that one of the best parts of filming was on location in Palm Beach, a suburb in the Northern Beaches.

“Our caravans were parked right on the water, and Glen and Sydney and I decided to live there the whole time. We’d shoot all day and all the crew would go home, then we’d jump in the water and have a swim, go to our trailers and have dinner sitting outside,” he said. “It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you normally wouldn’t be allowed to sleep there. It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had filming.”

Jones Bay Wharf

The historic Jones Bay Wharf is another familiar filming location in Anyone But You. The hidden gem in the Pyrmont district is home to fine dining restaurants, charming cafes, and beautiful views the of the city and Harbour Bridge.

Queen Victoria Building

While on their way to collect flowers for the wedding, Ben and his friend Pete are seen walking alongside the Queen Victoria Building. The Romanesque 19th-century building is actually a five-level shopping center with fashion boutiques, jewelry stores, cafes, and restaurants.

Anyone But You is now streaming on Netflix.
