Iloilo City reviving tourism

Iloilo City Tourism head Junel Ann Divinagracia.

Iloilo City tourism is one of the important sectors that have impact on the development of its community and economy. Tourism helps boost revenues, creates thousands of jobs, and contributes towards more economic activities.

This year, tourist arrivals have been limited due to travel restrictions because of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

City Tourism and Development Office head Junel Ann. P. Divinagracia presented to Mayor Jerry P. Treñas five recommendations on how to revive tourism industry.

First is to establish sense of safety and security. Compliance officers are deployed all over the city to ensure all health safety standards and requirements ordered by the Inter-Agency Task Force on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) are properly observed.

“Health protocols in tourism establishments shall be enforced. Establishments shall comply a Certificate of Authority to Operate from the Department of Tourism (DOT). There will be COVID Testing Center, and swabbing booths at the airport and seaport,” Divinagracia said.

Second is to prepare the tourism sector for the new normal. There should be a mandatory accreditation of tourism establishments by Department of Tourism and Department of the Interior and Local Government.

A series of online trainings and re-trainings of tourism frontline workers like taxi drivers and tour guides are needed.

Improvement of tourism sites and tourism product development are also important.

Also, more bike lanes will be established to support the growing biking community in the city.

Third will be the opening of tourist sites and establishments to locals and inter- region travelers. There should be opening of museums, bars and entertainment centers, and coffee shops until night or before curfew, and conduct of local products exhibitions.

Fourth is the support to local activities, events and celebrations to continue with adherence to health and safety protocols particularly the Iloilo City Charter Day on August 25, Iloilo Arts Festival in October, and December Festival of Lights, among others.

The last one is to push through concurrent tourism promotions. There will be an Iloilo City Tourism Photo/Vlogging Contest to encourage locals to visit and promote tourism sites.

They can also utilize the traction that Iloilo City has gained in the news and internet because of its COVID Initiatives.

Moreover, Mural Project will go on, and Virtual Tours will be initiated to excite domestic tourism. (Beatriz Angelica Pequierda / Iloilo City PIO)

Iloilo City Tourism and Development Office head Junel Ann Divinagracia was recently named Most Outstanding Tourism Officer of the Philippines by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines during their national convention in Cagayan De Oro City.

“I am happy for my team and for Iloilo City because the national office has seen and recognized the developments here since I assumed [the position] as tourism officer,” she said.

The city official called the 2015 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Iloilo City a “make or break” both for herself professionally and the city.

“After the successful APEC hosting, I have the same vision for Iloilo City to be a top MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions) destination in the country,” Divinagracia added./WDJ

Title: "Championing a Brighter World Together: Jeonbuk University Illuminates the Globe with 15 Years of Volunteer Service in Iloilo, Philippines" [Iloilo, Philippines] - From December 30, 2023, to January 12, 2024, a volunteer team from Jeonbuk University embarked on a 14-day mission to Iloilo, Philippines. Named Phil-Kor Friends and led by Professor Bae Joon-soo, the team engaged in diverse educational and cultural activities to promote valuable Korean values and foster meaningful connections with the local community. Continuing a 15-year tradition of overseas volunteer missions, this team, based at Nabatisan Elementary School, conducted educational outreach for elementary students, covering Korean language instruction, K-Pop, arts and crafts, and personal hygiene. Simultaneously, they organized donation events for essential goods and K-Culture exchange activities with the residents of Barangay Bantud, fostering a sense of solidarity within the local community. The volunteer activities saw enthusiastic participation from tricycle drivers' associations and elementary school children, actively promoting South Korea and showcasing the process of building friendship between the two nations. Additionally, the team visited Iloilo High School, facilitating cultural exchange activities and providing information about Korea to future leaders of the Philippines, thereby promoting mutual understanding. Through collaboration with Central Philippines University, the team expressed hopes for future partnerships, signing Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) for professorial exchanges, student interactions, research collaboration, and industry connections, aiming to strengthen the bond between the two universities. Notably, the team planned to utilize drone footage for promotional materials, capturing iconic landmarks in Iloilo such as Iloilo City Hall, CPU University, Megaworld, and Esplanade. By sharing videos on platforms like YouTube, they aimed to create opportunities for more Koreans to visit Iloilo. Jeonbuk University pledged to sustain and strengthen its relationship with Iloilo by annually visiting the region, maintaining steady engagement, and further enhancing bilateral relations through ongoing volunteer initiatives.

Hello Mr. Edwin Trompeta, We are a group of mountain bike enthusiasts from Manila who would like to visit/tour Panay island by bike. Do you have information on where to stay/eat, rates and places of interest? Our interest came from reading the account of a 1 week tour of a cyclist who biked all over the island in 2000 and recommended it highly. We are thinking of going ahead with the tour in the summer of 2010. Hoping to hear from you soon to finalize our plans, we also wish your success. Thank you very much. Leo Katigbak

Creation of ‘Iloilo Provincial Tourism Office’ pushed

Creation of ‘Iloilo Provincial Tourism Office’ pushed

Fifth District Board Member (BM) Binky Tupas is pushing for the creation of a provincial tourism office to “maximize the potential of Iloilo’s tourism as the main economic driver of the province.”

It’s high time for the province, according to Tupas, to create its own tourism office with a provincial tourism officer position to be appointed equivalent to a department head status, replacing the existing assistant department head post.

Last month, a committee hearing was held for Tupas’ proposed ordinance. It was attended by BM Matt Palabrica — co-author and co-sponsor of the measure — BM Jason Gonzales and BM Joan Germinanda.

Also present during the hearing were department heads of the provincial government, key leaders of the Iloilo Tourism Officers Association and representatives from the local government units (LGUs).

The “high-impact” ordinance is scheduled for committee reporting and second reading this month.

The measure likewise seeks to identify the functions of the provincial and municipal tourism offices to streamline the programs, projects and activities.

Moreover, it mandates the LGUs to create their own tourism offices and plantilla positions for tourism officers and if possible for them to establish an organizational structure for effective management.

The proposed “Iloilo Provincial Tourism Office” is backed by Department of Tourism (DOT-6) Regional Director Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez.

DOT-6, Rodriguez said, was consulted in the drafting of the proposed ordinance and provided guidance, legal basis and references to aid the local legislators.

“The creation of the tourism office and presence of a permanent tourism officer will definitely help the development and promotion of tourism that will eventually generate significant economic benefits for the province,” she stressed. IMT

ILOILO CITY (PIA) – A new campaign dubbed “Visit Iloilo”, which calls for the unified efforts of all tourism stakeholders to promote the place and position it as one of the premier destinations globally, was formally launched on April 15.

The event was led by the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc. (IFFI), the Iloilo M.I.C.E Alliance, and Megaworld Corporation, supported by the local government units of the city and province of Iloilo, the Department of Tourism (DOT)-6, the Tourism Promotions Board, and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI)-Iloilo.

IFFI president Allan Ryan Tan, in his speech, stressed that the campaign is a call-to-action for all tourism sectors to be unified in the stride to establish Iloilo as one of the top destinations in the world.

“It is an invitation for everyone to immerse themselves in our Ilonggo history, heritage, and hospitality. Visit Iloilo is an endeavor to elevate Iloilo as the Philippines’ festival capital,” Tan said, noting that 50 partners signed a commitment wall, signifying their unified effort to promote Iloilo’s gastronomy, and historical and cultural richness.

DOT regional director Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez also expressed support for the “Visit Iloilo” campaign as the initiative encouraged visitors to embrace responsible tourism through various practices, like “preserving nature, respecting local cultures, and supporting conservation efforts and local economies.”

“Iloilo beckons travelers with its exquisite cuisine, breathtaking landscapes, and the genuine warmth of its people. We are committed to providing assistance to ensure the campaign's success and hope it will inspire other local government units and tourism stakeholders to foster strong partnerships. Together, we aim to build a community that supports sustainable tourism and creates lasting benefits for all,” Rodriguez said.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas and Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. likewise supported

the campaign as the different tourism activities and festivals in Iloilo already show their commitment to solidifying the city and province as premier destinations.

“Iloilo City has thrived as a cultural and tourist hub for years in the Philippines. It’s a place where visitors keep on coming back as they are captivated by our lively festivals and rich cultural heritage. However, our ambition is to level up continually,” Treñas said.

“We would like to Visit Iloilo because you know why? My heart already beats in Iloilo City. We are fun, foodie, friendly Iloilo province,” Defensor also stressed.

Meanwhile, Megaworld Hotels and Resorts managing director Cleofe Albiso said that the campaign’s inclusive vision will feature an e-commerce platform showcasing local businesses, and the importance of unified marketing efforts.

Visit Iloilo also targets creating consistent digital awareness campaigns and new tour packages to boost tourist receipts that will lead to more economic gains and opportunities for all.

Data from the DOT-6 revealed that the city and province of Iloilo logged a total of 886,283 and 318,535 tourist arrivals last year, which translated to P11 billion in tourist receipts. (AAL/JNH/PIA Iloilo)
