Review: Cardi B’s Debut, ‘Invasion of Privacy,’ Is Personal and Undeniable

By Rob Sheffield

Rob Sheffield

When Cardi B teams up with SZA to announce, “I think us bad bitches is a gift from God,” hearing is believing. The Bronx queen’s long-awaited debut Invasion of Privacy is even better than everybody was hoping it would be, a whirwind tour of Planet Cardi, a place where female warriors reign supreme, taking occasional breaks to plant a Louboutin heel on a rival’s throat. Cardi expands on the flash of “Bodak Yellow,” one of the most glorious pop hits of this century – all over Invasion of Privacy , she puts on her bloody shoes and dances the blues. As Cardi declares in the fantastic opener “Get Up 10,” “I started speaking my mind and tripled my views/Real bitch, only thing fake is the boobs.”

Invasion of Privacy is lavishly emotional, intimately personal, wildly funny, as Cardi tells the tale of her life with high-profile guests like Chance the Rapper, YG and Kehlani. Where her fiancee Offset’s crew Migos just dropped a double album so long it was practically a prog epic –  Tales from Trapographic Oceans –  Cardi keeps it lean and mean, 13 tracks in 48 minutes without a moment of filler. She’s feeling herself – “Pussy so good I say my own name during sex!” But she’s not timid about the claim she wants to make on rap history – as she declares in her Chance duet “Best Life,” “I’m like Big Pop mixed with Tupac, I’m like Makaveli.” Invasion of Privacy proves that Cardi B is capable of anything, except being boring.

Cardi could have been designed in a mad scientist’s laboratory as the perfect pop star. She has the finesse of a Jarvis Cocker or Dolly Parton or Al Green – a star who’s had time to grow up in private and rehearse the part, so by the time they make their big move on the unsuspecting pop world, it seems like they just dropped from heaven fully formed, twice as clever as anyone else. Ever since she made her bones on Love and Hip-Hop : New York , she’s had that larger-than-life charisma. Nobody but Cardi would show up on the Golden Globes red carpet and tell E!’s Giuliana Rancic, on live TV, “I’ve got butterflies in my stomach – and in my vagina!”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

As the self-proclaimed “strip club Mariah Carey,” Cardi stresses her backstory as a dancer who rose to the top of the rap game – as she boasts, “Used to be covered in dollars, now I’m covered in jewels.” She frames her life as a rags-to-riches Binderella story. Invasion of Privacy comes with a slew of glitzy hits already attached: the definitive “Bodak Yellow,” her 21 Savage duet “Bartier Cardi,” her Migos-boosted “Drip.” But “Be Careful” was a single that truly expanded her emotional and musical range, playing up her Dominican heritage as she kicked Spanish rhymes while mourning her love pains. The way Cardi spat, “I poured my heart out to some piece of shit” stung as hard as when she sang the hook from Lauryn Hill’s “Ex-Factor.”

Invasion of Privacy shows off both sides – the stone-cold strut of “Bodak Yellow,” as in “Money Bag” and “Bickenhead,” but also the empty-bed blues of “Be Careful,” as in “Ring” or “Thru The Phone.” She celebrates her Latin roots in “I Like It,” sampling a vintage salsa hit (Pete Rodriguez’ 1967 “I Like It Like That”) for a duet with reggaeton star J. Balvin and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny. She traps out with YG in “She Bad,” where she says, “Know a bad bitch when I see one/Tell RiRi I need a threesome.” Her raw humor might tempt people to sleep on her deeply schooled sensibility, but something that always sets Cardi apart is her eccentric sense of hip-hop history. “Be Careful” was rooted in the late Nineties rap/R&B renaissance, with its nods to Hill and Sparkle; “Bickenhead” builds on her affinities with Southern rap, for anyone who mistook her Freak Nasty dip in “Bodak Yellow” for a fluke. She interpolates Project Pat and gives it up to Trick Daddy, telling the party people, “Make that pussy slip and slide like you from the 305.”

Trump Forced to See Mean Memes About Him Shared by Prospective Jurors

Quentin tarantino scraps film 'the movie critic,' which would've been his last, kelly clarkson's ex-husband denies 'every allegation' after lawsuit over $2.6 million ruling, cher's son argues she's 'unfit to serve' as his conservator.

Cardi saves the two most emotionally hardcore songs for the end: the epic high of “I Do” and the mournful lows of “Thru Your Phone,” which could almost be a doo-wop ballad. “Thru Your Phone” builds on the rage of “Be Careful,” as she contemplates revenge on her cheating man: “Smash your TV from Best Buy/You gonna turn me into Left Eye.” Beyoncé shows up all over this album as a Yoda-like figure (“Took pictures with Beyoncé, met Mama Knowles”), or as a celeb icon (“them pretty twins looking like Beyoncé”). But in “Thru Your Phone,” Mrs. Carter appears as an artist whose music nurses you through a crisis – Cardi stays up late, listening to Bey’s “Resentment” on repeat, while watching her man sleep and fantasizing about ways to kill him.

“I Do” ends on a triumphant note with SZA, the only star who really could hold her own with Cardi on a track like this – over that Murda Beatz production, Cardi announces “I’m in a boss bitch mood/These are some boss bitch shoes.” She also says, “Only time I’m a lady is when I lay-deez hoes to rest” (a line that could be Millie Jackson or Loretta Lynn or somebody). Invasion of Privacy flaunts so many different aspects of Cardi’s game, it comes on like a greatest hits album, as undeniable as the excellent New Wave suit she rocks in the cover art. It’s already tough to remember what it was like not having Cardi B around. Invasion proves she’s here to stay.

Review: Cardi B’s debut album ‘Invasion of Privacy’ is what we expected and more

Succeeding months of the media trying to besmirch Cardi; as well as her current singles being overplayed and becoming tiringly ubiquitous, the album ‘Invasion of Privacy’ came to deliver precisely what we needed.

' src=

After long anticipation from a plenitude of people, Cardi B has finally released her debut album. Ten months and three singles from the release of her first significant single ‘Bodak Yellow’, the Bronx-based rapper has swooned us all and became a hot household name.

Cardi B's cover art for 'Invasion of Privacy'

Possessing infectious energy along with a unique journey to stardom, it is no doubt that Cardi’s story is unprecedented. With a massive base of adherent fans in addition to a perpetually increasing fan base, the love for Cardi is indisputable. Before even being out for twenty-four hours, her album has already been deemed gold by the RIAA thanks to her single ‘Bartier Cardi’ featuring 21 Savage becoming certified platinum this week.

The thirteen track album is a delivery of the twenty-five-year-old artist’s unapologetic relinquishment. Coming through with energetically brazen and gleefully flagrant lyrics, Cardi exceeds all the expectations and then some. With in-your-face wordplay, the fiercely energetic project gives more insight to Cardi’s audacious and boss-like essence. Featured collaborations including Migos, Kehlani, YG and more help to intensify the fervency.

Starting off with ‘Get Up 10’, Cardi provides her testament to fame and power. Moving over to a more raunchy and jocular essence, the tracks ‘Drip’ featuring Migos and ‘Bickenhead’ are backed by sonorous instrumentals that can’t help but make you want to dance. On ‘Money Bag’ and ‘She Bad’ featuring YG, Cardi’s witty lyricism makes you love her even more.

It is true Cardi B nature to hold that valiant and zestfully brash presence, but songs ‘Thru Your Phone’ and ‘Ring’ featuring Kehlani, display the more vulnerable side. Staying true to her Carribean roots, Bad Bunny and J Balvin help Cardi switch up the vibe with Latin-rooted ‘I Like It’. Artists like SZA and Chance the Rapper steal some of the shine on songs ‘I Do’ and ‘Best Life’ but Cardi’s robust and distinctive flow never stands timidly.

For a debut, Cardi did her thing. She has been withholding a significant momentum and has us all under the impression that she is claiming whatever is next. Making her mark on the charts, it’s safe to say Cardi B is here to stay.

Everything to Know About Cardi B’s Long-Awaited Follow-Up to ‘Invasion of Privacy’

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

It’s been nearly six years since Cardi B took over the rap world with Invasion of Privacy , and her fans are ready for the follow-up.

One such supporter is Cardi’s estranged husband, Offset , who took to Instagram on February 19 to encourage her to take the plunge. “Stop being [scared] and drop the album,” Offset captioned an Instagram Story video that showed him bobbing his head to muted music. Apparently, the music in question was Cardi’s unreleased album, and he was giving his seal of approval. “S–t goes crazy,” he wrote, adding four fire emojis.

Offset is hardly the only fan waiting for Cardi’s second album. She’s been teasing new music for years, dropping tons of singles and collabs but never confirming when a full album is dropping.

Cardi released Invasion of Privacy on April 6, 2018, nearly one year after its lead single, “Bodak Yellow,” established her as one of hip-hop’s newest stars. The album debuted atop the Billboard 200, and as of 2024, the RIAA has certified it quadruple platinum. The singles “Bodak Yellow” and “I Like It” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Cardi B and Offset: A Timeline of Their Relationship

In the years since, Cardi has been a fixture of red carpets and awards shows, even landing a cameo role in the 2019 movie Hustlers . But her fans are still wondering: Where’s the album?

Keep scrolling for everything to know about Cardi’s long-awaited sophomore release:

Did Cardi B Quit Music?

Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy came out in April 2018, and the ongoing absence of a follow-up album has left many wondering whether she’s walked away from music.

That speculation intensified after an Instagram Live session in November 2023. “I’m out of here,” she said at the time . “Y’all might not see me for a long time. … ’Cause I’m not in the mood to be famous. If y’all want to see me, y’all come to the TikTok concert in Arizona. Other than that, I don’t know. I’ve been liking my low-key life. You hear me.”

Hours later, when fans began to wonder whether Cardi had just announced her retirement, she tweeted that she “never said I was taking a hiatus.” She added that she was “continuing with my social media break like I have been for the last few weeks. Not sure why that’s causing such a ruckus. [Bardi Gang], you know where to catch me!”

Why Hasn’t Cardi B Released Her New Album Yet?

In December 2022, Cardi went on Instagram Live and explained that anxiety over being away from her kids has contributed to her delaying the release of her second album. She and Offset welcomed their daughter, Kulture Kiari, in July 2018 and their son, Wave Set, in September 2021.

“I feel like I have gotten too comfortable because, you know — I’m just a mom, and I do have anxiety ,” she said. “I’ve been having a lot of anxiety because I know right after I drop my album, I have to go out on tour, and I have bad separation anxiety from my kids.”

She also opened up about struggling to match Invasion of Privacy ’s success. “I just be feeling like I don’t be liking anything. I feel like I got so many songs. I just don’t like nothing. Like, nothing is good enough. I got so much f–king money saved up, I be like, ‘Yeah, whatever the f–k,’” she said. “Making music to me has become like a job that gives me anxiety because everybody just critiques everything that I do.”

Cardi added that “sometimes you don’t want to do something that gives you that much anxiety,” noting, “So I just be freezing myself, but I have to let that go. I have to release more music — I have to go out there.”

Cardi B’s Best Boundary-Pushing Style Moments

When speaking with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in 2021 , Cardi said her fear was a main factor in her delay. “I really wanted to put out an album [in 2020], but I feel like I don’t have the right songs,” she explained. “I recorded so many songs, I think I got, like, 50 songs recorded. If I’m not satisfied, I’m just not satisfied.”

She admitted that she feels like she’s “exceeded my limit” of stalling. “I just need to stop with the fear,” Cardi concluded.

What Is the Name of Cardi B’s New Album?

As of February 2024, Cardi B hasn’t released the name of her second album.

When Will Cardi B’s New Album Be Released?

In September 2023, Cardi appeared on Hot 97’s “ Ebro in the Morning ” and told host Ebro Darden that she should “already start talking about the album because I’m going to be putting it out very soon. But it’s like I have to watch it, because I always feel like somebody watching me — it’s going to come out when it’s going to come out.” Cardi then clarified that the album wasn’t going to come out that year, hinting that it would arrive in 2024.

Cardi also said that she was “holding [the album] because I feel like I’m missing a couple of things. Then, on top of that, everything just has to be, like, perfect from everything, because I feel like people are expecting so much.”

What songs will be on cardi b’s new album.

Fans might assume that Cardi’s songs “WAP,” “Up” and “Bongos” will be included on the new album, but Cardi hasn’t confirmed that. Her interviews indicate that she has so many songs in the bank that these previously released tracks might remain non-album singles. Her 2019 collaboration with Bruno Mars , “Please Me,” was such a single, as was her 2018 release “Money.”

The Most Iconic Celebrity Pregnancy Reveals of All Time: Beyonce, Kourtney Kardashian and More

Who Will Be Featured on Cardi B’s New Album?

Since releasing Invasion of Privacy in 2018, Cardi’s released a handful of hits, mostly with other rappers on the tracks: “WAP” and “ Bongos ” with Megan Thee Stallion , “Point Me 2” with FendiDa Rappa and “Hot S–t” with Kanye West and Lil Durk . More duets, however, may not be in her future.

“I’m not going to release any more collaborations,” Cardi said in an August 2023 interview in Vogue México y Latinoamérica . “I’m going to put out my next solo single. Right now, I’m working on the cover art and ideas for the next record because it’s definitely coming up.”

She also hinted that the singles were just the precursor to a larger release. “Everyone always tells me I should put the record out now,” she explained. “They did when I released ‘WAP’ and when I released ‘Up,’ but I always let them know I’m not going to wait long after all these singles. So, stay tuned, because it’s coming out very soon.”

Cardi B’s Entire 'Invasion of Privacy' Tracklist Is Certified Gold or Higher

Cardi B became the first woman to achieve this feat.

Cardi B gold

It seems like every week Cardi B is making history. Well, Belcalis from The Bronx has done it again, after all 13 of her tracks from Invasion of Privacy were certified gold or higher by the RIAA.

Cardi dropped her debut album back in April, and the entire project has gone double platinum in the months that follow. That puts Invasion  on par with albums from Migos and Post Malone, giving Cardi one of the most successful rap albums of 2018. On top of that, she's now the first woman artist to have an album with all of its tracks certified by RIAA.

Bardi is not only the first woman to accomplish this success, but one of the first artists in the digital era. Invasion of Privacy joins albums like  DAMN . by Kendrick Lamar and  Blurryface  by Twenty-One Pilots.

Her lead single and breakout hit "Bodak Yellow" has gone platinum seven times since its release. As you can see below, seven tracks on her project have gone platinum at least once, and the other six are certified gold.

The rapper has been caught up in her fair share of drama lately, related to her breakup with husband, collaborator, and baby daddy Offset . While things may be rocky on that front, Cardi had an incredibly successful year career wise, and also gave birth to her daughter Kulture in the process. For all her work, she received five Grammy nominations , which she found out about while leaving court .

Invasion of your privacy.

L.A. glam metal greats Ratt returned to record stores a year after their smash debut with 1985's INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY. Producer Beau Hill is back behind the boards, adding radio/MTV-friendly polish to 10 originals including opener “You're in Love,” “Between the Eyes” and Top 40 hit “Lay It Down.” Driving and catchy with an appealing touch of sleaze, this music is an ideal showcase for Stephen Pearcy's commanding vocals and the twin-axe attack of Robbin Crosby and Warren DeMartini (whose solos here qualify him for guitar god status). INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY was a double-platinum success, and the Atlantic collection is truly a ball for headbangers.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – A Newport Coast homeowner took matters into his own hands after authorities said two suspects broke into his multi-million dollar home with his family inside early Tuesday morning.

Officials with the Newport Beach Police Department said they received a call around 4:45 a.m. regarding a possible home invasion in a gated and affluent neighborhood off Pelican Hill Road and Newport Coast Drive. The caller also stated they shot one of the suspects.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found one of the suspects lying in the street with a handgun and was suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to an area hospital where he continues to be treated. His condition is unknown.

Investigators also discovered a second suspect was involved and prompted a search.

Newport Coast home invasion foiled

A Newport Coast homeowner took matters into his own hands during a home invasion.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the investigation and their helicopter located a second suspect hiding in the bushes.

A short time later, they found he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

Investigators believe the family was targeted and that they knew at least one of the suspects, which is why they may have been able to get access to the home.

Newport Beach PD investigating home invasion

Orange County authorities were investigating a possible home invasion in Newport Beach.

"I just want to assure the Newport Beach residents that this is a safe community," said Newport Beach PD Sgt. Steve Oberon. "It was a targeted incident. We know that there is a relationship between the two suspects and the victims/the residents."

SUGGESTED:

  • Mid-City homeowner fires on would-be robbers
  • 'Instincts kicked in': Man shoots at would-be robbers in his Sherman Oaks home

Authorities are unable to say how the thieves got into the high-security gates at the neighborhood.

"It is a safe community, especially up in the Newport Coast in a guard-gated community," said Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill. "This is shocking. If you come into Newport Beach to commit a crime, we will defend ourselves, and today is an example of that."

Some residents who live in the area say this case is shocking.

"It’s just totally unique to this neighborhood," said Don Danks. "We’ve never had anything like this at all. I’ve lived here for 30 years."

Sources tell Fox 11 police were called to this same, gated Newport Beach neighborhood within the last few weeks for another home break-in at a different home.

"People feel compelled now that they can take over people's personal property; it’s lawlessness," said Roseann DiCostanzo, a nearby resident and the Orange County chair of New California State. "We’re not putting up with any more of this stuff. I personally am taking training to make sure I know how to use my Second Amendment rights. If a homeowner felt threatened that their life was in danger, have a party."

A spokesperson from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office tells FOX 11 this case hasn’t been handed to them from Newport Beach police.

Newport Beach PD added this was an isolated incident and the safety of the community remains their top priority.

FOX 11's Matthew Seedorff contributed to this report.

After headling Coachella's first day last Friday, Lana Del Rey took to social media to thank everyone who helped bring her set to life -- except her ex-tour manager, whom she accused of quitting just over a month before the performance.

In a lengthy post shared to her Instagram page , the 38-year-old singer gave a shout-out to many of the people who had a hand in her Friday set, including her special guests Billie Eilish, Jack Antonoff, Jon Batiste, and even her clairvoyant. But when it came to former tour manager Pete, the GRAMMY-nominated artist claimed he "quit for no reason after 15 years," while profusely praising his replacement, Emily.

"Emily for stepping up as tour manager when Pete quit for no reason after 15 years because he was butt hurt that I got 10 comped bikes for free from Wally and randomly decided he was more of a stage designer than a tour manager," Rey wrote in part, referring to the motorcade of 10 motorcycles she featured in her viral entrance to the stage. "Never got a phone call probably never will. Still grateful for the 15 years though. No worries - 37 days was more than enough time to put together an entire headlining set all by ourselves."

"Way to go Emily you f**king killed it with grace," she added. Later, she asked her managers, Ben and Ed, to "...please send me an email If you decide to quit this year- 15 years is a long time for us too☺️."

But Pete's alleged and abrupt exit wasn't the only obstacle Rey had to overcome for her Friday headlining set. The singer revealed that she had been suffering from laryngitis ahead of the show, sharing that it cleared "just a few hours" before she took the stage.

She thanked her band "for just killing it and spending months in Sylmar in a 40° warehouse to the point but it was so cold that I caught laryngitis that literally left just a few hours before I hit the stage because Tessa DiPietro [Rey's clairvoyant/healer] spent two hours lifting that cough remotely through her body intuitive skills just minutes before showtime."

"It was fun. I'll see you again real soon," Rey concluded her message. She'll be back on the Coachella stage this Friday for weekend two.

Friday marked the singer-songwriter's first performance at Coachella since 2014, and she kicked it off with a star-studded performance. Rey brought out Eilish to perform a duet of "Video Games" and "Ocean Eyes," as well as Batiste to perform "Candy Necklace." Antonoff also made an appearance to play the piano for "Hope Is A Dangerous Thing For A Woman Like Me To Have - But I Have It."

Coachella's first weekend was all about girl power: one of the biggest performances of the night went to  Gwen Stefani 's reunion with No Doubt  band members Tony Kanal, Adrian Young and Tom Dumont, for their first full concert in almost 10 years at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

The definition of ageless, Stefani, who was sun-kissed thanks to a Dolce Glow tan, and the guys didn't miss a beat as they performed some of their classic ska and pop tracks, including "Ex-Girlfriend," "It's My Life," and "Hey Baby."

During "Bathwater,"  Olivia Rodrigo  shocked the audience as she joined the group onstage with her hair in mohawk buns and a shirt that read, "I Love ND."

Throughout the performance, Stefani was filled with emotion as she told the crowd that she wasn't sure the reunion was ever going to happen. No Doubt ended the set with a trifecta of their earliest hits, "Just a Girl," "Don't Speak," and "Spiderwebs."

In 2021, Stefani  opened up about the possibility of the group reuniting , following their 2014 hiatus and ahead of their 30-year reunion.

"It is a really big deal," Stefani told  Zane Lowe on Apple Music . "I'm reflecting so much on all the music. When you're writing new music, reflect on everything that you've done. For sure, surreal to think that that happened so long ago. I have no idea what the future holds with that. You know what I mean? It's impossible."

invasion of privacy tour

Little Tokyo’s deliciously rich food heritage will be celebrated with a one-day festival that puts the spotlight on the 140-year-old neighborhoods’ iconic restaurants.

The Delicious Little Tokyo celebration returns to the downtown Los Angeles neighborhood May 4 with guided tours of some of  the neighborhood’s longest standing restaurants as well as self-guided tours that include food specials.

“We want people to come out and get to try things in the neighborhood, whether they’ve been here a hundred times and are trying things they love or something they never had. It’s just a nice day to explore, eat different things and support small businesses,” said Kisa Ito, the project director for the Little Tokyo Community Council, organizers of the event.

The main event of the day will be the $45-per-person Food History Tour of Little Tokyo, which will be guided by members of the Little Tokyo Historical Society.

People who take this tour will get a history lesson on some of the longest-standing small businesses and food spots, including places like Fugetsu-Do, a Japanese mochi and manju confectionery that opened in 1903 where people can sample their famous green tea manju . Other stops include Mitsuru Cafe, which serves Japanese comfort dishes like oyakodon, teriyaki and the hard to find imagawayaki, a dessert that’s resembles a thick waffle stuffed with bean paste.

“They’ll learn about some of the businesses that made what Little Tokyo is today and the foods that are relevant to the stories of Little Tokyo,” Ito said.

Food lovers can also trek out on their own with a pair of self-guided tasting tours that for $65 per tour will offer food deals at several restaurants. One of the participating restaurants is the somewhat hidden Far Bar where those on the tour can grub on their spicy wasabi fries. Another spot on the self-guided tour is Mitsuru Sushi and Grill, where people will be served yakisoba and chicken teriyaki bento.

For people who enjoy libations there will be workshops where attendees can learn about drinks at places like Wolf & Crane, 366 E. Second St. The bar will host an introduction to whiskey class for $40 per person while Peking Tavern, 236 S. Los Angeles St., will host a course on Baijiu, which is a centuries old Asian spirit. Tickets for the Baijiu tasting are also $40.

And there will be things for kids to do as well since there will be a Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day) Celebration at  Isamu Noguchi Plaza, 244 S. San Pedro St., and the Children’s Arts & Culture Festival at Terasaki Budokan, 249 S. Los Angeles St., from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both events are happening in conjunction with Delicious Little Tokyo and are free to attend.

Here’s Where Israel’s Military Offensive in Gaza Stands

More than six months after the Hamas-led attacks of Oct. 7, Israel’s campaign to eliminate the armed group in Gaza is pressing ahead.

Iran’s attack on Israel has shifted focus from the war in Gaza, but Israeli military operations press on there with the aim of eliminating Hamas, the armed group that controlled the territory before the fighting began.

Israel’s military launched its assault in Gaza after Oct. 7, when Hamas led an attack that Israeli authorities say killed around 1,200 people. Israel said its aims were to defeat Hamas and free the hostages taken that day, around 100 of whom remain in Gaza. Local health authorities say the war has killed more than 33,000 people, and the United Nations says the population is on the brink of famine .

Here is a look at where the military conflict stands:

Southern Gaza

Israel withdrew its forces from southern Gaza this month, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that the military still plans to invade Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city, to “complete the elimination of Hamas’s battalions” and to destroy its tunnel networks.

The timing of any operation in Rafah, on the border with Egypt, is unclear. President Biden is among many world leaders who have urged Israel not to invade the city because of the harm it could cause civilians. Rafah’s population has swelled to over a million, as people have flocked there for shelter from fighting elsewhere, and border crossings in southern Gaza are a main conduit for humanitarian aid.

Northern Gaza

Israel began its ground invasion in northern Gaza in late October, urging civilians to leave. Much of the north, including Gaza City, has been destroyed by airstrikes and ground combat. Israel began to pull its forces from northern Gaza in January, saying it had dismantled Hamas’s military structure there.

In March, however, Israeli troops mounted an operation at Al-Shifa Hospital, in Gaza City, where it said Hamas fighters had returned. Israeli troops said they had killed about 200 fighters and captured 500 more. The hospital, once Gaza’s largest, was left in ruins .

Some analysts said the raid showed that by leaving northern Gaza without a plan in place for governing the area, Israel had made it possible for Hamas to return. At the same time, some civilians who had fled south and attempted to return via a coastal road said this week that Israeli forces had fired on them. Their testimony could not be independently confirmed.

Central Gaza

The Israeli troops that remain in Gaza are mainly guarding a road that the military has built across the center of the strip to facilitate its operations. The Institute for the Study of War, a research group, said that was consistent with Israel’s plans to shift to a strategy of more targeted raids rather than wider assaults.

Israel retains the capacity to launch airstrikes anywhere in Gaza and it has conducted several around the central city of Deir al Balah. This month, Israeli planes attacked a convoy of the World Central Kitchen charity near the city, killing seven aid workers . Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has said that Israel regrets the strikes.

Across the territory

Experts say the Israeli military has had considerable success in dismantling Hamas’s military wing, the Qassam Brigades . It has broken the strength of most of its battalions with tens of thousands of airstrikes and ground combat, said Robert Blecher, an expert at the International Crisis Group think tank.

Israel has also killed at least one of Hamas’s top commanders and has destroyed some of the tunnels in which the group operates. But Hamas retains significant organizational and military capacity, particularly in southern Gaza where its tunnel network acts as a shield, and its leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar , is still at large.

“Israel has done a good job of disabling those stronger battalions,” Mr. Blecher said, but he added: “Hamas is going to remain as an insurgent force.”
