The main transatlantic and long-haul airports in Ireland are Dublin and to a lesser extent Shannon . The vast majority of transatlantic flights come through Dublin. There are also airports in Belfast , Cork , Kerry and Knock (Ireland West Airport) but these are for regional (European and UK) destinations only.

The Irish national carrier is Aer Lingus , though many international airlines do long-haul flights into Ireland. For European flights, Ryanair and Aer Lingus are the main two, though again there are countless other airlines operating flights from Ireland to the rest of Europe.

Option 1: Arrange a Private Tour

Private tours are tours that can depart on any date and visit almost any location in Ireland. The major benefit of private tours is that you are in control. You set the pace of the tour, you decide on the locations to be visited and how long you wish to stay there. You typically won't meet other tourers on a private tour but you will have more free time to meet local people. If you don't mind the lack of a built-in social group (of a scheduled tour) there is no finer way to see the island of Ireland. The freedom to go where you want, when you want and at your own pace is the main reason people choose private tours.

Freedom and flexibility

Scheduled tours are tours that depart and arrive on preset dates and adhere to a set itinerary with little deviation. For the past ten years Colm has been a chauffeur driver, providing a personalised, professional and reliable service for many tour operators. He now runs his own small family run chauffeur business, Private Driver Ireland.

With a special interest in archaeology, world history and politics, Colm is not only our principal private driver for tours, he also has detailed knowledge of every county and town in Ireland, making him the perfect person to act as your host and guide.

Regularly described by clients as ‘a perfect gentleman’, he knows the highways and byways, and he knows the most scenic routes, whether along the Wild Atlantic Way stretching for over 600 km along of the wild west coast of Ireland, Ireland’s Central Lakelands, or the cities and towns of Ireland’s Ancient East with their incredible archaeology and history.

If it’s golfing in Ireland you’re interested in, Colm as a keen golfer himself can provide you with advice and tips on visiting Ireland’s best parkland and links golf courses and how best to plan your golfing trip.

Driver Colm McGuinness was the perfect chauffeur for our girls’ trip (mother, two daughters, granddaughter) from Dublin to Galway, with stops in between in Glendalough, Killarney, the Black Valley, Dingle Peninsula, Portmagee, Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and Connemara. A great driver, but an even better tour guide. The girls said, “When Colm says get out and look, you should get out and look.” He helped us experience Ireland in ways we could not have anticipated. From the side trips to check out golf courses, to the pub stop after our Saint’s Path trek to watch the finish of a hurling match, and other moments of kindness, humor, gentlemanly regard, Colm added greatly to the fond memories we will carry.

The vehicle was top notch (a Mercedes van) and Colm’s command on the narrow roads gave us confidence throughout. A great way to travel!

Cliffs of Moher

Rising over 200 meters high and spanning 8 kilometers along the wild Atlantic coast, the Cliffs provide stunning views of the Aran Islands with the ocean crashing below. Your driver-guide will be able to inform you of all the folklore and myths that surround this incredible testament to the beauty of nature.

You’d be able to pay a visit to the magnificent Glencoe Mountains for the day from a variety of starting points in Scotland.

The areas around Glencoe have hikes suitable for a wide range of activity levels so don’t worry if you don’t want to climb up to the top – we’ll still manage to get to some incredible viewpoints, particularly of the ‘Three Sisters’ scenic area.

Visit a jewel in the crown of the fabulous Causeway Coast: Giant’s Causeway. A site of World Heritage and therefore ranked alongside Mount Everest and the Giant Redwoods of California for its importance to humankind. Welcome to one of the most amazing places on the planet; The Causeway comprises around 40,000 mostly hexagonal basalt columns descending gently into the sea. Depending on who you believe, the stones were formed either by an underwater volcano’s geological actions or by an Irish giant named Finn McCool, who lived and battled along the north Antrim Coast. However, it was formed, it is a fabulous way to spend an hour.

The famous Glenfinnan viaduct carries the railway to Glenfinnan Station across a 1,000 ft span, 100 ft above the ground. The Jacobite steam train runs from here to Fort William and Mallaig in the summer months.

The filming of the second and third Harry Potter books, Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban took place in this area with the Hogwarts Express calling at Glenfinnan!

Ring of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry is the ring road that follows the coastal contours of Kerry’s Iveragh Peninsula. The Ring is one of Ireland’s most famous circuits, but it’s much more than a simple driving route, the Ring of Kerry is an iconic destination wrapped in stunning visual history.

This scene-stealing route beginning and ending in Killarney takes in all the big hitters – Moll’s Gap, the Torc Waterfall, and the Gap of Dunloe are places you will see, but really, the route itself is so much more than the sum of its parts. 

Isle of Skye

A good many facts make Loch Ness stand out among other Scottish lakes. It is the second-largest Scottish lake with a surface area of 56 km 2  (the largest being Loch Lomond), but due to its great depth, it is the largest by volume in the British Isles. Its deepest point is 230 m, making it the second deepest loch in Scotland after Loch Morar. It also contains more freshwater than all the lakes in England and Wales combined!

The iconic Kylemore Abbey was built in the late 1800s by Mitchell Henry MP, a wealthy businessman, and liberal politician, who, inspired by his love for his wife Margaret, and his hopes for his beloved Ireland, created an estate boasting ‘all the innovations of the then modern age’. Kylemore is now owned and run by the Benedictine community who have been in residence here since 1920.

The famous Eilean Donan: a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet, Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh, in the western Highlands of Scotland. A picturesque castle that frequently appears in photographs, film, and television dominates the island, which lies about 1 kilometer (0.62 mi) from the village of Dornie. Since the castle’s restoration in the early 20th century, a footbridge has connected the island to the mainland.

The castle was founded in the thirteenth century and became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies the Clan Macrae. In the early eighteenth century, the Mackenzies’ involvement in the Jacobite rebellions led in 1719 to the castle’s destruction by government ships. Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap’s twentieth-century reconstruction of the ruins produced the present buildings.
