Network Outage Resolved

JGLOBAL_PRINT

We wish to notify the public that starting from 9:40 am today, we experienced a system outage affecting a number of core services on our network.

This outage affected Voice, Data, SMS, M-PESA and Enterprise services.

Our engineers identified the root cause of the outage, which was a failure on both our core network as well as our redundancy options.

Our team worked as quickly as possible to resolve the issue and invoked our Business Continuity Planning protocol to restore services and the incident was marked as closed at 4:30pm.

At present, most Voice, Data, SMS, M-PESA and Enterprise services are available.

We wish to assure our customers that their balances and the integrity of our system are intact.

We apologise for all inconveniences caused.

Safari freezes on startup in Monterey 12.2

After spending over 14 hours to finally complete the "emergency security update" of Monterey 12.2, Safari (which was the reason for the update) now freezes whenever I start it up. Is anyone having the same issue and/or have a resolution?

Thanks for any suggestions!

I should have mentioned in my original post that I have had issues with Safari crashes on my MBP16 M1, since the very first day. Safari would immediately freeze on various websites, but could potentially freeze on any website. The issue only became much more prevalent following the "emergency security update" of Monterey 12.2. Following that update, Safari, for all intents and purposes, became totally useless. Fortunately, I was able to force quit the Safari app, without having to restart the entire OS. As long as I only used Firefox, everything was OK (other than various less critical issues).

Over time, I scaled Safari down to the bare essentials: NO extensions, no pre-loading favorites, etc, etc. Nothing helped to remedy the issue.

Then, with the release of 12.3.1 (21E258) update to Monterey, all issues with Safari went away. So, while nobody in Customer Support was aware of the problems (or was allowed to admit to them), this update did solve my Safari problems!

I wanted to give it a few days before declaring victory, as one never knows what might happen as soon as you do so. But it would seem that someone in the development group actually read some of my numerous crash reports and figured out what was wrong.

THANK YOU, APPLE! It's good to be back in the fold! I've been using Apple products exclusively for far to many decades to ever consider returning to a MicroSoft product!

Hi svdrifter,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand Safari is freezing upon opening after the latest macOS update, and we'd like to assist. We recommend holding down the shift key and opening Safari as this will clear its cache and open a clean session. You can also try booting Safari in safe mode. Here's how:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

If you're able to open Safari, you may consider making sure your Extensions are updated to the latest version. You can also temporarily turn off Extensions or temporarily delete them to see if things improve. Choose Safari > Preferences, then click Extensions. To turn off an extension, deselect its checkbox.

This is plaguing me too since when I updated Safari - about a couple of months now. (January of 2022)

When I launch Safari, typically after a restart (I don't usually have a need to quit Safari), it hangs immediately. Before it tries to open any previously open windows. I usually Force Quit after giving it ample time, and then try again. It hangs again, repeatedly. The two things that seem to fix it is:

  • When, after a few hangs and force quits, it asks me if I want to reopen old windows, I say no. This usually works but not always
  • Hold down the shift key when launching Safari, and that opens Safari with no windows.

After this, then I can use the menu command, "Reopen all windows from last session", and my windows all open.

I've tried closing all my windows, and testing this, and it doesn't seem to be specific to what windows are open but if there are any windows that are to be reopened.

I'm seeing this on two macs, both older Intel Macs, one a MBP and the other an iMac.

I have NO extensions loaded in Safari, nor are there any non-standard settings other than the activation of the "Develop" menu option. Also, I experience these issues in BOTH of my Admin accounts.

Safari has always slower than Firefox (or other browsers) on my current MBP16 with Monterey. But on Safari, under the macOS 12.2 "critical update", it's only a matter of time [a short time] before I get the "spinning beachball of death". There seems to be little consistency with regard to which sites will cause the issue. When it does happen, I cannot even access the menu bar to force quit Safari. If I have another app running in the background, I can usually switch to it and then select "Force Quit..." from the Apple Menu.

If this continues, I'll have to return to my 2015 MBP15, running under High Sierra. At least that one works consistently. Surprisingly, it's even faster than my 2016 MBP16 M1 (and I get all my precious 32-bit apps back). Don't know what I was thinking.

Feb 1, 2022 12:00 PM in response to jdo_apple

Yes, I did try all the steps listed in the article... all to no avail.

And, yes, I did call Apple Support... also to no avail.

I think it's time to give up and go back to my 2015 MBP, running under High Sierra. That combo worked flawlessly, until some of the keys on my keyboard started loosing functionality. I just wish it had done so sooner, so I could have replaced it along with my batteries. Why can't "planned obsolescence" be better coordinated? ;-(

Thanks for the feedback, albeit to no avail.

I just drove to a Public Library today, where I had access to a faster WiFi to reinstall Monterey 12.2. Two + hours later, it finally finished. I indeed noticed a difference. Safari now crashes (freezes) immediately, regardless of the website! Should I consider that to be "progress"?

Feb 3, 2022 3:29 AM in response to svdrifter

Same here, after update macos Monterey12.2 this morning, safari open all saved bookmarks at the start and want to confirm index.html, and open the window for confirmation. When you start safari open 2 browsers at the same time and open all millions saved bookmarks. The macbook pro going at the maximum capacity of CPU and RAM capability and freezes safari.

Feb 3, 2022 6:56 AM in response to Gabriel Delev

That's interesting, Gabriel. I don't know whether or not Safari was trying to "open all saved bookmarks", but the suggestion sounds reasonable. Good luck with that... I don't even guess how many tens of thousands of bookmarks I've saved over the years. I almost "freeze up" just trying to imagine. Surely I no longer need them all, but having been a developer for several decades, I frequently use a good many of them, finding it much quicker and easier it is to search within my [well-organized] bookmarks, prior to Googling for new references to any given topic. That's to say little of the immense time investment that would be required to sort through and slim down my immense collection of bookmarks.

GOOD NEWS THAT MAY HELP OTHERS WITH THIS ISSUE...

As I mentioned in my initial post, it took me over 14 hours to do the original emergency security update from macOS 12.1 to 12.2. This unreasonable time allotment was do to numerous crashes during the update(s), causing me to start the download(s) all over again from scratch. As I indicated, I was able to reinstall Monterey 12.2 using the Public Library's, faster and more secure WiFi. Although I repeated got the message that the update would take 5-1/2 hours, it actually completed in about 2 hrs.

Since the reinstall, Safari now froze up within seconds... no longer allowing me to load ANY pages. It did so, while attempting to load tabs and/or windows that had previously been opened. To resolve the issue, I would force quit Safari, then upon reopening it, I immediately closed the front browser window as quickly as I could. Typically, it would then freeze again. I continued this process until all tabs/windows were closed. I then opened a new private browser window . This seems to have stopped the crashes. And (knock on wood) I have not experienced any more freezes... yet. It's a bit early to make a final judgement, however.

Hopefully, this information will help others who have also been experiencing Safari lockups. I have no problem with the concept of using "private browser windows". But I have to wonder why one can now ONLY use Safari within a private window. This was never an issue for me prior to the 12.2 update and I'm confident that the update was indeed the cause of the issue.

I do hope this information helps others with the same problem. And I would love to hear feedback from anyone else who did have similar experiences.

Feb 3, 2022 9:25 AM in response to svdrifter

It looks like I spoke too soon. Although using "private windows" did reduce the frequency of crashes, it didn't fix the problem completely. Unless I can go back from Monterey 12.2 to 12.1, I'll be installing a new keyboard in my 2015 MBP 15 (running under High Sierra), so I can get back to a productive environment and finally get some work done again. to be honest, that setup ran faster and more efficiently than this 2016 MBP 16 M1 anyway.

Hopefully, Apple will someday fix Monterey, so I can use this again... too much time and money invested to just throw it in the closet!

Feb 5, 2022 4:57 PM in response to Gabriel Delev

Thank you, Gabriel... I'll give this a shot. I'm pretty sure I've covered all of the items in this checklist, but I will do so again in the specified order just to be sure. (As an FYI, I have already reinstalled macOS 12.2 twice, to no avail.)

In the interim, I have identified numerous other issues that surfaced with the 12.2 update as well. I'm tempted to close the lid on the new MBP16 M1, until 12.3 comes out to hopefully fix the latest new bugs. By the time macOS 13 comes out, 12.xx should be relatively stable.

I appreciate the feedback! I'll let you know.

Feb 6, 2022 8:21 AM in response to Gabriel Delev

As it tuns out, I had actually tried ALL of the steps provided in your link already... all to no avail. I went back and tried them all again nonetheless... still to no avail. For a moment, I thought it was fixed. A "moment", however is a hardly a solution. I do appreciate the suggestion, however.

I'm glad you got your situation resolved.

Feb 7, 2022 10:19 PM in response to svdrifter

Hello, Jack. You are welcome! Yes the new updates 12.1 and 12.2 is a nightmare! I have for first time: poping sound, battery drawing extremely fast, FaceTime robot voice, safari freeze on start up...., but in my case i solve: Safari problem with the steps that I share with you, and the battery drawing: Solution reset SMC.

I hope Apple Team fix this problems fast.

Mar 31, 2022 5:58 AM in response to mahboud

Well here I am again (no... STILL). This is incredibly frustrating. I have been trying to fix this issue for over 4 months now, hoping that I can find the issue, or that it will fix itself with macOS updates. So far... NOTHING.

In addition, many other things are not going as intended. For example, I had used "1Password" for a very long time and it worked flawlessly. Then Monterey's "Password" System Preference totally screwed up EVERY password I've ever used. Who thought this one up?

I've been using Apple products since the Apple II, and exclusively Apple products since System 6, in 1988. Every version had it's issues, but for me, MacOS Monterey has absolutely been the most devastatingly horrible OS I've experienced... and it will surely be the LAST one that I will use and/or recommend to my clients, family and/or friends! There is absolutely NO excuse for this!!!!!

How-To Geek

Is google down here's how to check (and fix it).

Got problems accessing Google Search or another Google service? Here's what you can do.

Quick Links

How to check if google is really down, check google's service status page, try a different browser (or app), restart your device, try a different connection type, consider changing your dns server, use an alternative search engine, use alternative services to google maps, docs, and more, google is very rarely down.

As unlikely as it may seem, even Google experiences outages occasionally. Sometimes Google Search will operate while other Google services experience problems of their own. There's also the possibility that the problem is on your end, instead.

While it can happen, Google being genuinely unavailable is a very rare occurrence. The first thing to do would be to double-check using a tool like DownForEveryoneOrJustMe , Down.com , or IsItDownOrJustMe . Keep in mind that an outage could be localized to your region, so these websites may show differing or incorrect results.

If you suspect that there really is an outage, you can always check on social media websites like Twitter and Reddit . This sort of event doesn't happen very often and so people will be talking about it, especially if it's also affecting services like Google Drive and Gmail.

It's more likely that the problem is on your end, so let's take a look at some potential remedies.

For a better picture, Google's Workspace Status Dashboard  shows the status of apps like Gmail and Google Drive. If you're having trouble accessing a specific product, this is a good place to start. If something is down, you'll have to wait until the issue is fixed to get a resolution.

One of the first things you might want to try is switching to a different browser. We've noticed issues with Safari, particularly using iCloud Private Relay , where Google searches permanently hang. These issues don't occur in Google Chrome or Firefox , so it's another example of why it's a  good idea to have more than one browser installed .

Related: Why You Should Use Multiple Web Browsers

Google services like Docs and Sheets generally always work best in Chrome, though most browsers should work just fine. Mobile users can use the corresponding app for iOS and Android to get the best results.

If you're having trouble with the Google App for iOS or Android, try killing the app or use your web browser instead. You can try updating or reinstalling the app if the problem persists.

Turning your computer or smartphone off and then on again is a quick way of fixing a huge number of problems. If you are having problems reaching Search or a particular Google service, reboot your device and try again.

Related: Why Does Rebooting a Computer Fix So Many Problems?

If the problem is being caused by your internet connection, you can try connecting via a different connection type. If you're having trouble with your computer over your home wireless connection, try connecting using your smartphone over cellular.

You can even create a hotspot and share your cellular connection with your home computer and try connecting that way, which may serve as a temporary fix in some instances.

If you find that switching to cellular works, you may want to fully reboot your network hardware (router and modem) to see if that fixes the problem. You can also check your ISP's service status page to see if any known issues are affecting specific services.

Related: Internet Connection Not Working? 10 Troubleshooting Tips

The Domain Name System functions as a phone book of sorts , linking domains (like howtogeek.com) and IP addresses . By default, you will be using your ISP's DNS servers, but you can easily change to an alternative. You may even find that your web browsing is faster after you switch .

Changing your DNS server is pretty easy, with some good alternatives being Google Public DNS ( 8.8.8.8 ) or CloudFlare ( 1.1.1.1 ).

Related: The Ultimate Guide to Changing Your DNS Server

Whether or not the problem is with Google's servers, your internet connection, or a software problem on your end; if Google Search isn't working you'll need to use a different search engine until things have been resolved.

DuckDuckGo is an alternative search engine that's focused on privacy . You can perform all your searches with DuckDuckGo with a little effort, but you'll miss out on deep integration with Google's services and the results are admittedly not quite as exhaustive. If privacy is a concern, there are a few other search engines you might want to consider too.

If you want results from Google in particular, Startpage is a service that has a unique agreement with Google. This allows you to piggyback Google results without the tracking and accompanying privacy concerns . The service isn't a one-for-one replacement, results aren't identical, and you'll miss out on integration with Google's suite of services; but Google is powering Startpage at its core.

Microsoft's Bing search engine is probably the closest thing to Google. There are some compelling reasons to switch to Bing if you don't mind relying on a different large corporation for your search efforts. By far one of the best reasons is to take advantage of Microsoft Rewards , where you earn credit for services like Xbox Live, Amazon, and more.

One thing to note is that if a website you frequent (like this one) uses Google as a search engine and you're unable to use Google Search, website functionality may also be affected. You can always use operators like "site:howtogeek.com" in other search engines to restrict results to a particular domain instead.

Google operates a huge number of additional services, many of which could be affected by an outage or some sort of problem on your end. This includes Google Maps, Google Drive, applications like Gmail, and the company's suite of browser-based apps like Google Docs and Google Sheets. Plenty of alternative apps exist to break you out of the Google ecosystem.

For maps, try Bing Maps or DuckDuckGo's Apple Maps-powered mapping alternative that promises to respect your privacy . There's also OpenStreetMap , your favorite alternative app like Apple Maps (for Mac or iOS) and Maps.me (for iOS and Android).

If you absolutely cannot reach Google's services, then any data you have stored in your Drive will also be inaccessible unless it's also being mirrored to a device using the Drive app . This is one of the potential problems that come with storing things in the cloud.

If you only need temporary use of a word processor then there are plenty of offline and online text editing apps to choose from. The same is true for spreadsheet tools like LibreOffice Calc and Apple Numbers .

Gmail is the other obvious concern for a Google outage. You can always try using an email client that communicates via IMAP instead (like Apple Mail on an iPhone) to see if the issue is limited strictly to the web version. First-party Gmail apps may also be worth a try. If your only problem is Gmail not receiving emails , though, there are a few extra things you can try.

If you use a desktop or mobile email client that stores email offline, you may be able to access the contents of your inbox that way instead. If you only have a Gmail account and you absolutely need to send an email, consider registering for an  alternative free mail service instead.

Most of the time, the problem will be with your own software or connection. You can run through a list of connection troubleshooting steps  and see if that helps, use traceroute to figure out exactly where the problem lies , and examine whether or not your ISP is to blame .

If Safari doesn't open a page or work as expected on your Mac

If Safari doesn't load a webpage, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or otherwise doesn't work as expected, these solutions might help.

These solutions are for issues that can affect Safari on Mac, including issues such as these:

A webpage is blank, doesn't load all of its content, or otherwise doesn't work as expected.

You can't sign in to a webpage, despite using the correct sign-in information.

A webpage asks you to remove or reset cookies.

Safari slows down, stops responding, or quits unexpectedly.

Reload the page

From the menu bar in Safari, choose View > Reload Page. Or press Command-R.

If Safari doesn't reload the page, quit Safari, then try again. If Safari doesn't quit, you can press Option-Command-Esc to force Safari to quit .

If Safari automatically reopens unwanted pages, quit Safari, then press and hold the Shift key while opening Safari. Learn how to control which windows Safari automatically reopens .

Install software updates and restart

Update macOS , which can include updates for Safari. If your Mac didn't restart automatically, choose Apple menu  > Restart. Some important background updates take effect only after restarting.

Check Safari extensions

If you installed any Safari extensions, turn extensions off. From the menu bar in Safari, choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences). Click Extensions, then deselect each extension to turn it off. Learn more about Safari extensions .

If you find that an extension is causing the issue, make sure that the extension is up to date.

Test with a private window

A website can store cookies, caches, and other data on your Mac, and issues with that data can affect your use of the website. To prevent the website from using that data, view it in a private window: From the menu bar in Safari, choose File > New Private Window, or press Shift-Command-N.

If that works, use the following steps to remove the website's data, including its caches and cookies. The website can then create new data as needed. If it's a website that you sign in to, make sure that you know your sign-in information before continuing.

Choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences), then click Privacy.

Click Manage Website Data.

Select the affected website from the list shown.

Click Remove.

Click Done.

Open the website again in a non-private browser window.

Check Safari settings

The webpage might not be compatible with one or more browser settings, which you can turn on or off as needed. From the menu bar in Safari, choose Safari > Settings (or Preferences). Then click Websites, Privacy, or Security to access these settings:

Privacy settings . These settings apply to all websites. For example, a website might require that you allow cross-site tracking, show your IP address, or allow cookies.

Security settings . These settings apply to all websites. For example, a website might require that you enable JavaScript.

Websites settings . These settings can be configured for specific websites. For example, a website might require that you allow pop-up windows, allow downloads, allow access to your camera or microphone, or turn off content blockers.

Check iCloud Private Relay

If you subscribe to iCloud+ and are using its Private Relay feature, try reloading the page without Private Relay: From the menu bar in Safari, choose View > Reload and Show IP Address. This menu item appears only when Private Relay is turned on for your network. Learn more about iCloud Private Relay .

Check VPN or other security software

If you installed VPN or other software that monitors or interacts with your network connections, that software could affect your use of the website or the internet. Learn about network issues related to VPN and other software .

Check network settings

Certain network settings, such as custom proxy settings or custom DNS settings , can affect access to content on the internet. Even if you haven't changed these or other network settings yourself, you might have installed software that changed them for you.

To find out whether the issue is with the network settings on your Mac, try viewing the page from a different web browser or different device on the same network. Or reset your network settings by setting up a new network location on your Mac.

If the issue affects other devices and web browsers on the same network, the issue is probably with the website, and you should contact the website developer for help.

If the issue continues to affect only a particular webpage, contact the website developer for help.

How to Speed up Safari on Your Mac

In this article you will find the following:

Safari is the fastest browser on the Mac, but it isn't immune from slowdowns and performance issues. If web pages take longer to load or site navigation doesn't feel responsive, read on to learn how to speed up Safari on Mac.

  • How to speed up Safari on Mac

Is Safari running slow on your MacBook, iMac, or Mac mini? Connectivity issues, unoptimized extensions, cache corruption, and a host of other reasons often cause that. Try the suggestions in our guide to get Safari running smoothly on Mac again.

Before you start   If you want to speed up Safari on Mac quickly, download MacKeeper . It's an Apple-notarized maintenance utility that helps prevent browser slowdowns and other Mac-related issues.     MacKeeper lets you free up the RAM, delete unwanted Safari extensions, get rid of junk files, and more with considerably less hassle than manual maintenance. You get one fix for free, so don't hesitate to check if it works for you.

Check if your internet's slow

If webpages in Safari take too long to load or fail, it's a good idea to begin by figuring out if it's just a matter of your internet being slow. The best way to do that is to use an online speed checker like Fast.com or SpeedTest.net .

A screenshot that shows the website to check internet speed in Safari

Restart your router if you find that your internet isn't uploading or downloading at a decent rate. If that doesn't speed it up, learn what else you can do to fix a slow internet connection on Mac .

Also, don't discount server-side issues. If the problem is limited to a specific site, use a website monitoring tool such as Downdetector to determine if you're dealing with a server outage.

  • Close unnecessary tabs in Safari

Although Safari is adept at handling dozens of tabs, having too many open simultaneously will eventually take its toll on your Mac's memory. That creates delays while loading new pages, and the performance hit could also result in erratic browser behavior.

Screenshot that shows opened tabs in Google Chrome that are needed to be closed to make Safari run faster.

The quickest way to speed up Safari on Mac is to shut down unnecessary tabs as soon as you notice any slowdowns. Getting used to moving between and closing tabs using the Ctrl + Tab and Command + W keyboard shortcuts can make the process even faster.

  • Shut down apps and resource-intensive processes

Tabs aside, Safari will run slowly on the Mac if you have too many applications open. Check your Mac's Dock and quit anything you aren't actively using. Try force-quitting troublesome programs if you can't close them normally.

On the other hand, various apps and related processes can spin out of control and consume too much processing power and memory. Use the Activity Monitor to locate and stop them.

  • Open the Launchpad and select Other > Activity Monitor
  • Sort your Mac's activity using the % CPU column and shut down any third-party processes that use a significant amount of CPU
  • Switch to the Memory tab and stop third-party items that use lots of RAM.

If you always end up pushing the hardware on your Mac to its limits, consider using MacKeeper's Memory Cleaner feature to keep things under control.

  • Disable unnecessary Safari extensions

Running Safari with multiple extensions increases the load on the CPU and RAM. That translates to slower browser performance, so review your list of browser add-ons and disable any items you don't regularly use.

  • Open Safari and select Safari > Preferences on the menu bar
  • Switch to the Extensions tab
  • Clear the boxes next to any extensions you want to disable.

Our team highly recommends you update Safari extensions periodically via the Mac's App Store to ensure they run in top shape. If you notice anything suspicious, learn how to remove malicious browser extensions and toolbars from your Mac.

  • Switch DNS servers for Wi-Fi and Ethernet

DNS (short for Domain Name System) is a cataloging system that matches domain names with IP addresses. Not all DNS providers are fast, so changing your Wi-Fi or Ethernet's DNS settings to a popular service like Google DNS can speed up Safari on Mac. For best results, clear the DNS cache on your Mac before you begin .

  • Open the Apple menu and select System Preferences
  • Select the Network category
  • Select Wi-Fi/Ethernet > Advanced
  • Switch to the DNS tab
  • Select OK > Apply to save your changes.
  • Clear the Safari cache and cookies

Like most web browsers, Safari caches various forms of site data — images, HTML files, and JavaScript code — to improve load times in subsequent visits. However, a bloated or corrupt cache can adversely impact performance and result in Safari running slow on the Mac. You can clear the Safari cache after activating its hidden Develop menu .

  • Switch to the Advanced tab and check the box next to Show Develop menu in menu bar
  • Select Develop on the menu bar and pick the Empty Caches option.

Corrupt, outdated, or privacy-invasive browser cookies can also slow down Safari. If deleting the Safari cache didn't make much difference, try deleting its cookies next.

  • Select Safari > Clear History on the menu bar

Update the Safari browser

Safari receives occasional bug fixes and performance enhancements from Apple, and these arrive alongside regular macOS updates .

To update your Mac:

  • Select Software Update
  • Wait until the Software Update tool checks for newer macOS updates and select Update Now to install any pending updates.

To have your Safari browser updated, you need to update macOS to the latest version by going to Software Update from the System Preferences menu.

Even if a new macOS update doesn't include anything Safari-related, installing it will still improve general performance across native apps. Make it a point to install macOS updates as soon as possible.

  • Reset Safari to factory defaults

Corrupt browser preferences and other underlying issues can also play a factor, so sometimes, the only way to fix a slow instance of Safari on Mac is to reset it to factory defaults.

A Safari reset deactivates all extensions and reverts each browser setting to its defaults, allowing you to start over with a clean slate. You will not lose your bookmarks or passwords during the process.

  • Save your work and exit Safari
  • Open Finder, select Go > Go to Folder on the menu bar, and visit the ~/Library/Preferences/ directory
  • Search for com.apple.Safari.plist file and delete it
  • Reopen the Go to Folder box and visit ~/Library/Safari/ . Then, delete each item within the folder except the Bookmarks.plist file
  • Visit ~/Library/Containers/ , search for Safari, and delete all files and folders that appear among the search results
  • Open Safari and visit its Preferences pane to reactivate any essential extensions. Also, move between tabs and modify your browser settings the way you want.
  • Boot your Mac into Safe Mode

If none of the fixes above help speed up Safari, try booting your Mac into and out of Safe Mode. That helps flush out various forms of temporary data that can interfere with Apple's browser.

On an Intel Mac, you can get to Safe Mode while holding down the Shift key during the reboot phase. However, if you use an Apple Silicon Mac, you should:

  • Shut down your Mac
  • Turn it on but keep holding the Power button until you get to the Startup Options screen
  • Hold the Shift key and select Macintosh HD > Safe Mode .

To start M1-based Mac in Safe Mode, restart your Mac and hold the Shift key until you see the Startup Options screen.

In Safe Mode, repeat the fixes above if you could not complete them earlier. Then, restart your Mac normally. To delete additional forms of temporary data that can slow down Safari, learn how to delete your Mac's application and system caches .

  • Full steam ahead

Keeping Safari in top shape is crucial for a great web browsing experience. Avoiding too many open tabs, shutting down unwanted apps and processes, and cutting down on the number of active extensions can go a long way toward making that happen. Occasionally clearing the Safari cache and keeping your Mac up-to-date will significantly minimize browser slowdowns and other issues. If manual Mac maintenance feels like a drag, don't forget to download MacKeeper .

Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 148 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview , the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview Feature

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is built on the Safari 16 update and it includes support for feature coming in macOS Ventura such as Live Text, Passkeys, Web Extension improvements, and more.

The new build of ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is compatible with machines running macOS 13 Ventura, unlike prior versions of ‌Safari Technology Preview‌, but it no longer works with macOS Big Sur.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences to anyone who has downloaded the browser . Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

Apple lets Safari lag far, far behind other browsers. EU & Feds start asking questions, and Apple lights up the hiring boards looking for browser engineers. Tim is a good ops guy, but cannot see the forest whilst harvesting its most profitable trees. Fingers crossed Apple is forced to allow other browser engines to power browsing on iOS & iPads. It is really hard to argue that Apple's M$FT-like monopoly on the pad/phone browser app is good for us -- but I am sure many here will flame me with reasons why this is so.
