Public transport in Bratislava

Bratislava has built an understandable public transport line system of buses, trams, and trolleys, which convey at regular intervals according to timetables. Apps with timetables are available both for Android and iOS . Most of the line stops of the public transport are comprehensively marked; including the name of the stop, and the timetable with a list of all its destinations.

Nearly all sights and main monuments in Bratislava can be reached by walking, however, regarding a transport to the airport, bus station or the main train station we recommend to use public transport lines or taxi.

Operating hours

Public Transport in Bratislava operates the bus, tram and trolleybus lines starting approximately at 4:20 am till 11 pm. After this time you can find bus lines with prefix "N", which means "night bus". All means of transport are marked by number and by the starting and final stop name (in a case of night buses the mark is: N91, N39, ...). The service of night buses is reduced and they usually go once an hour. We recommend to arrive at the bus stop 5-10 minutes before its departure, it might arrive earlier.

Buying tickets

Remember to purchase an appropriate ticket before using the services and mark in inside the tram or (trolley)bus. You cannot buy the travel ticket from the bus driver ; however it is possible to do so at the yellow coin-operated machines situated at most of the stops, newspaper stands, and tourist's information offices. Student and children tickets have 50% discount (you need a valid ISIC card) . At some stops, these machines are missing so it might be a good idea to have some spare ticket in your purse. One ticket can be used for any kind of Bratislava public transport but there are tickets with a different validity:

  • 15 minutes (0.70€) - no transfers are allowed; once you get on one bus/tram/trolley you cannot change to another one with the same ticket.
  • 30 minutes (0.90€) - transfers are allowed, during weekends ticket is valid for 90 minutes.
  • 60 minutes (1.20€) - transfers are allowed, during weekends ticket is valid for 90 minutes.
  • 24-hours (3.50€), 72-hours ticket (8.00€), or 168-hours (11.40€) - transfers allowed; good choice for tourists expecting to use public transport more frequently. It allows you to travel as much as you need by all forms of transport.

It is also possible to buy an SMS ticket but it is working only for customers of Slovak mobile phone operators (T-Mobile, Orange, O2 Telefonica, Tesco Mobile, FunFon). These tickets are valid for 70 minutes (1€ cost of your prepaid credit) and are transferable among lines.

If you are visiting Bratislava for couple of days and you know you will need the public transport several times, we recommend you to buy a Multiday Tourist Ticket for unlimited numbers of routes including the night buses. You can also buy "combined" tickets that might be used for travelling to small cities and villages close to Bratislava, you have to pay for every zone you cross (city center counts for two), please consult this map  for further details.

Validating tickets

For getting on/off you can use every door opened along the whole vehicle. The ticket must be marked in the nearest ticket marker immediately after getting on. The marking devices are located by every door of the public transport and are working during the whole ride until the ticket inspector gets on the same bus as you, from that moment are the marking machines blocked. If your ticket is not marked or it is not valid anymore or you have transferred with 15 minutes ticket, you could get a fine. It is possible to pay on spot or in 5 days, the price is "only" 50€. If you pay between 5-30 days you have to pay 70€ in the office of Bratislava Public Transport (DPB). If you do not have cash, they will happily walk with you to the nearest ATM since they have bigger commission from your fine. Be careful, ticket inspectors are sometimes rude to tourists.

Finding timetables, stops & routes

If you are not sure about your destination or bus number, you may definitely ask someone waiting with you at the stop; they will be happy to help you out. The drivers usually do not speak foreign languages and are not that happy to assist you.  Vast majority of vehicles are equipped with displays showing the next stop, maps of public transport lines, and even announcing all stops out loud.

Popular routes for tourists

How to get from Central Railway station ("Hlavna stanica") to (or from):

  • Airport ("Letisko") - there is a direct bus from the central railway station, number 61 and the airport is the very last bus stop. Buy a 60-minute bus ticket for 1.20€. It takes approx. 20 minutes though. In a rush hour (5 - 6 pm) count with at least 30 minutes.
  • Bus station ("Autobusova stanica- Mlynske nivy") - there is a direct trolleybus number 210 get off at the last bus stop – "Autobusova stanica". 15-minute ticket is enough for this route, because it takes only 10 minutes.
  • City center (bus stop: "Namestie SNP") - First walk to SAV (2 min down from the station), then take bus number 83 or 93 to Zochova (2 stops)

How to get from central railway station (Hlavna stanica) to: City center: Important bus/tram and trolley points in the center of Bratislava are stops at: Racianske myto, Trnavske myto, Zochova.

Some of the bus stops you should know as a tourist:

  • "Námestie SNP" - next to Main square
  • "Šafárikovo námestie" - next to the river Danube and National Museum
  • "Malá scéna" - next to the shopping centre Eurovea
  • "Zochova" - under Bratislava castle

Important bus/tram and trolley points (where you can change to many other links) are stops at:

  • "Račianské mýto"
  • "Trnavské mýto"
  • "Autobusova stanica Mlynské nivy" (central bus station)

SAD (busses outside Bratislava)

If you need to travel to a small city or a village close to Bratislava it is best to use SAD busses. You can find the nearest stop at this page , if you are not sure all busses start their route at AS Mlynské Nivy. This service is different from the public transport in Bratislava - the tickets are bought directly from the bus driver, so you have to enter via the front doors (tell the driver your destination. It is good to have coins and not bills, but you will get your change back anyways).

Bicycles in public transport

Transporting bikes in public trams or buses is possible and for free, but is not allowed during the rush hours (you can transport bikes form 9:00 - 13:00, 18:00 - 6:00, during weekends and public holidays). You need to buy and mark a special ticket and ask the driver to give u permission in order to take the bike inside (it might happen, that the place selected for transporting bikes, strollers, wheelchairs is already occupied, so you have to wait for the next line). Board through the doors with a bicycle sign. It is possible to transport maximum 2 bikes in the first tram carriege or in the whole bus, so if you are in a bigger group you need to split. But the trams drive very often (every 10-12 minutes), so you can wait for each other at the final destination.

Transport and Parking

Tickets for public transport are valid for a certain period of time and are available from ticket-machines or kiosks. They must be validated once inside the tram/bus. Tickets are valid for all means of public transport in the city and remain valid when changing from one means of transport to another. Tickets have a minimum  validity of 30 minutes and the longest is 7 days. Find schedules, journey planners, routes and tickets at www.idsbk.sk/en or  imhd.sk , the IDS BK or imhd.sk application is also available.

Bratislava CARD

If you plan to stay in the city for one, two or three days, there is nothing quite as practical and advantageous as the Bratislava CARD . It entitles you to free public transport, a guided tour in the Old Town, discounts on admission fees to museums, galleries, as well as taxi and car-hire up to 100%. The card can be purchased from the Tourist information centre.

Trams are the most popular and fastest form of public transport in the city. They are reliable and on time and generally run from 5 a.m 11:30 p.m. Find schedules, journey planners, routes and tickets at www.idsbk.sk/en or  imhd.sk , the IDS BK or imhd.sk application is also available.

Buses also play a substantial role in the public transport system. Limited- stop services run on the longer routes through the city. After midnight, night buses operate in Bratislava at roughly one hour intervals. Find schedules, journey planners, routes and tickets at www.idsbk.sk/en or  imhd.sk , the IDS BK or imhd.sk application is also available.

Trolley-Buses

Some routes in the city centre, mainly in its hilly parts, are electrified and serviced by trolley- buses. They have a long tradition in Bratislava and have been operating here for more than 100 years. Find schedules, journey planners, routes and tickets at www.idsbk.sk/en or  imhd.sk , the IDS BK or imhd.sk application is also available.

Private transport

Excursion boats run on the Danube in Bratislava from April to October. They depart from the passenger port on the Danube bank ( 2 DB 31). From the boat you can see how dynamically the city is developing and the role the Danube plays in it. A round trip takes about 45 minutes, the trip to Devín Castle 1 ½ hours. lod.sk

Driving in the city has become more and more difficult. Although there has been an increase in the number of motorways and bridges, there has also been an increase in the number of cars. The worst periods are between 8:00 and 9:00 and 16:30 to 17:30. The speed limit in the city is 50 km per hour unless indicated otherwise.

Bratislava has branches of  international car-hire firms such as Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, etc. They have offices in the big hotels and at the airport. However, there are local car-hire firms offering comparable quality at competitive prices: rentalport.com ,  abrix.sk , autodanubius.sk,   rai.sk

The main roads in the city are provided with digital information displays showing the current number of vacant places in underground garages or in car parks. Street-parking in the city centre is a paid service. Parking can be paid by purchasing a parking ticket in a machine.  The obligation of payment is on weekdays from 8:00 am to 6 pm.

It is less expensive to order a taxi over the phone than to hire a taxi from a taxi stand or stop a taxi on the street. The minimum charge for a short-distance trip is around € 5. We recommend checking the price with the driver prior to getting in the vehicle. Every taxi must have a price list displayed in a visible location, and a fare meter must be used. Taxi drivers are obliged to issue receipts on request.

It is also convenient and useful to order a taxi via the UBER, HOPIN or BOLT application, which you can download to your mobile phone:

The local people are great cycling enthusiasts but mostly for sport or relaxation. It is rare to see people riding bikes to work as is quite usual in other European cities. Cycle-paths generally run along the Danube or in the suburban areas of the city and they are not yet inter-connected.

The Bikesharing project brings up to 550 bikes to the streets of the capital. Find out how you can rent one of the yellow bikes.

From Vienna to Bratislava by train

Are you thinking of visiting Bratislava or Vienna by train? Great choice! It is a comfortable and fast option. There's a direct connection between these two cities, so you don't have to worry about catching another train or changing to the wrong one. You can just relax to have enough energy for all the experiences during the trip, or browse our guide with several tips to find out what not to miss in Bratislava!

In this article we have summarised for you the most important information you might need or find interesting when travelling by train from Vienna to Bratislava and vice versa.  Note: Although we mostly use the phrase “ from Vienna to Bratislava” in this article, all the information is of course valid for the opposite direction, i.e. when travelling from Bratislava to Vienna, too.

How far, how long: distance between Vienna and Bratislava and travel time

The distance between Vienna and Bratislava is approx. 55 kilometers as the crow flies. No wonder these two cities hold the lead as the two closest capitals. By train it is 60-90 km - depends on the train you take, whether e.g. IC or regional train, as there are different railways. Anyway, it takes just about an hour to get by train from Vienna to Bratislava, or from Bratislava to Vienna, as you like. Sounds great, doesn´t it? Perfect opportunity even for a day trip. There can be some variability according to the type of train, whether you´re going to Bratislava Hlavna stanica or Bratislava Petrzalka, the journey time may be longer on weekends and holidays, too…However, the difference is only a few minutes.

From Vienna to Bratislava, from Bratislava to Vienna: by train almost every half hour

As Vienna and Bratislava are so close to each other and travelling by train from one city to another is so popular - and not just by tourists, but also by cross-border workers, there are about 39 trains from Vienna to Bratislava per day . In other words, it's possible to catch a train almost every half hour, so if you miss a train, do not worry, there will be another one in a while. :) Moreover, as mentioned before, all these trains are direct , therefore it is possible to travel from Bratislava to Vienna without having to change trains.

Despite the high frequency of train connections, it's good to know that there is no night train . The last train usually leaves the station around midnight, the first around four o'clock in the morning. There's just one exception as one train from Vienna leaves after midnight. So if you need to get from Vienna to Bratislava (or vice versa) at night, we recommend choosing a taxi.

Train from Vienna to Bratislava: How much does a ticket cost?

Ticket prices differ according to the type of the train, train class, some additional services, whether purchased online and in advance, at railway ticket offices or in self-service ticket machines. There are also differences depending on which operator you buy your ticket through - Slovakia Railway Company (ZZSK), ÖBB or Omio travel portal. The average price is about €14 for a one-way standard ticket, if purchased online . This price is mostly applied by tickets offered by Slovakia Railway Company (ZZSK). Via Omio travel portal, tickets can be purchased for as little as €11 ! Therefore we would definitely recommend using this platform. Online tickets are available HERE . Moreover, Omio also has its own app, which makes the process of trip planning much easier.  In general, the sooner a ticket is purchased before the planned trip, the cheaper it is. In our opinion, it's less stressful when purchasing a ticket in advance, especially if you will be in a hurry. Nevertheless, if you prefer to buy them right at the train station, there are ticket offices or self-service ticket machines.

There are also some discounts for children, students, retired persons or for holders of special cards with special offers (e.g. Europa Expres, Europa Regional and other international as well as internal programs). An overview of all discounts can be found e.g. on ZSSK website .

Bratislava and Vienna: train stations and how to get there

In Bratislava, both train stations, Bratislava Hlavna stanica and Petrzalka , are easily accessible by public transport . Getting to or from the center, the Bratislava central bus station Mlynske Nivy or the Bratislava Airport is possible without problems as well. To find a suitable connection there's nothing easier than using Journey Planner on the official Bratislava public transport website.

Regarding the main train station in Vienna (Wien Hauptbahnhof, or Wien Hbf.), it is close to the city center as well and you can get there by metro in just 5 minutes (St. Stephen's Square station).

Train providers on the route Vienna - Bratislava

All trains between Vienna and Bratislava are operated by ÖBB, Austria's national railway company. There are express trains, intercity trains and high-speed train RailJet Xpress, the most modern ÖBB train, which moves at a speed of 230 km/h! This train also excels in a high level of comfort, however, all ÖBB trains are well equipped and offer services to make your journey more enjoyable.

Additional information

As pet- and sports lovers, we know that a possibility to take your “beloveds” with you can be really important when planning a trip, no matter whether it's a dog or a bike. Nevertheless, terms and conditions differ from train to train, so we recommend checking the up-to-date information directly on providers´ website or when searching for a particular train, it's usually mentioned there.
