Hailing from Leicestershire, UK, Kasabian are one of the most recent bands to ascend to stadium playing levels of success this millennium. They’ve released five albums since forming in 1997, and are a quartet based around the creative duo of frontman Tom Meighan and Lead Guitarist Sergio Pizzorno.

They’re probably one of the most misunderstood, contrary bands in British rock right now, so of course they would also be one of the biggest. In 2014 alone they had a Pyramid Stage headliner slot at Glastonbury Festival , played a sold out show in their hometown of Leicester’s 60’000 capacity Victoria Park, released another number one album and capped it off with a sold out tour taking in five nights at Brixton Academy in London.

Yet that doesn’t mean that everyone, or indeed anyone, truly gets them. Many people peg them as heirs to Oasis’ lad rock crown but the band are far more interesting and uncompromising than that. They’ve always sounded more like a more techno-infused Stone Roses or a more guitar based Prodigy than any other bands who would never have even thought of taking up instruments if it wasn’t for “Definitely Maybe”.

For a band with such a populist touch (a Brit Award, millions of albums sold, headline slots at every major British festival there is) they have never lost their thrillingly weird side that has led to collaborations with everyone from Noel Fielding to Richard Ayoade, through to Gorillaz cohort Dan The Automator.

Truth is though, in lead guitarist, head songwriter and all around main man Sergio Pizzorno, they have a band leader who’s more adept at combining terrace anthem choruses with underground strangeness than any collaborator could possibly be. In Tom Meighan, they have one of the most charismatic, electric frontmen of their age. Their reign at the top will go on and on and on for a very good reason, there’s no one else around quite like them, in the U.K or anywhere else.

Live reviews

This is the second time I have since Kasabian in the last twelve months. A year ago I watched them in a smallish venue in Amsterdam (Paradiso) and managed to stand right at the front. That was a great gig. The Summer Solstice gig in Leicester was on a whole different level - it was awesome. The band absolutely killed it. The countdown on the back screen added to the anticipation, then as Shiva started up it intensified even more. As soon as Bumblebeee started the crowd went mad. We stood in front of the first barrier so pretty close to the stage but out of the moshpit. It was absolutely rammed in this area but all very good natured. Every song was full-on energy. Everyone was bouncing (some dancing but not much room to do it). The playlist was a brilliant mix of old and new tracks - everyone a killer (and there are other fantastic tracks which could have been included). The white backdrop to the stage ensured that you could easily see the group. The lighting and lasers added to the effect without overkill. The pink and white effect a total contrast to the (unfounded) view that they are just a lad's band. The crowd was a mix of young and old, male/female, and many family groups. At the end it was clear how much it meant to all of the band who constantly thanked the crowd. It was the best gig I have ever attended and I was still buzzing the following day. I highly recommend Kasabian gigs to anyone. It is difficult to pick out a highlight as the whole setlist was brilliantly put together.

What can you say about a Kasabian show? Glorious? Yes. Exuberant? Certainly. Defiant? Of course. But more than anything else simply ...Rocking.

From the first thumping chords of opener "Ill Ray" Kasabian announced their intent to deliver. Storming through a set list loaded with heady anthems, occasionally bringing the mood lower with numbers like the terrific "Goodbye Kiss", Kasabian had the whole arena eating out of their hands.

There's something special that happens when this band start to play in front of an audience. It's united - from those who just love the killer hooks to those who love that Kasabian really dont give a crap about the estaishment and really capture the spirit of rebellion. They're a band that capture the mood of the common person with lyrics at times partying and at other times sobering and thoughtful. But always hopeful - and with a joyous shout. A proper "fuck you" band exhorting the people to stand together and rise as one.

And rise the crowd did. Every single person in Leeds arena on their feet, jumping, dancing, singing - all together as one from those in the sweaty heaving mosh of the floor to those right at the very top of the top tier.

A marvellous night. Kasabian are the band that Oasis wished they were or xould have been.

Kasabian are one of those bands that you mention in America and no one knows. This is a double-edged sword. On the one hand you wish people would take notice and they would become successful do you can talk about them. On the other hand, they can remain a niche band and tour America in small, general admission venues for lower ticket prices. I prefer the latter option. The people that show up to those shows are the TRUE fans. And Kasabian delivers in spades.

Kasabian have the spark that a lot of big bands sorely lack, or have lost because they've gotten too famous. I have seen them twice, front row both times, both at the 9:30 Club in DC. They incorporate the crowd when they can, they dance, they move and they get the crowd off. It's hard to describe. I go to almost a dozen shows per year but Kasabian has both times been the best show I have ever seen. Then again, they are one of my favorite bands.

Not many bands can deliver the energy and presence required to rock a 100,000 person arena or stadium and translate that to a 2,000 person hall for an intimate show. Not many singers can make their voice ring clearly over the thunder of distorted guitars and hammering drums. Luckily for me and anyone else who caught the show last night at the Metro, Kasabian has both presence and a capable singer who did not disappoint even the most demanding of critics. I have loved this band for years now but I did not anticipate that they would still put on such a great live performance and play a healthy mix of classics and new material. I would heartily recommend this band as a great performance and I will be coming back for more if they ever come back to Chicago.

As a major fan of British/European music, I must say it is always a pleasure to see these bands in the US since a lot of them play in smaller places.

I've seen Kasabian 3 times and my wife has 9 times now. They NEVER disappoint and this show was the same.

The energy they bring is amazing time after time and their music is always fun. They also look like they are having a legit great time up there doing what they love to do.

I was up front and again (which I should have learned)I should have brought ear plugs! But, the sound is muffled when one does uses those, so if you can stand a few days of ringing, then don't worry about it.

Overall if you thinking of seeing them live please, please GO. You will leave a fan.

2009: I am 14, everybody is going crazy about Fire which was the first song I heard, and then Kasabian took my life by storm.

2011: Velociraptor! is out, adventurous and leaving behind all the bands which prefer to stay conservative and stand by classic sounding.

2014: I am 19, and 48:13 strikes with its sonic experimentation. It is colourful, wild, tentative and boundary-pushing.

2017: For crying out loud, so much awaited and so easy-to-love, prolongs the party which was carried to the concert. And it was a true madness fueled by our crazy love and the band’s response. Kasabian can be whatever band they want to be - they have our full support

Kasabian! They are not as famous as they should be in the U.S.! They know how to perform to make you want more and more! Almost a 2 hour show was amazing, perfectly created; song after song feels perfectly fited in time and atmosphere! They love their fans and they make sure you feel it! Definitely, one of the best shows I've ever been to! Don't believe me then try yourself and you won't be disappointed!

I have been attending Rock Werchter for over a decade but in the last edition, Kasabian really stood out on the main stage. They totally got me hooked with their energy, sound quality, musical diversity and excellent mix of guitars and electronics. Now, I have all their albums and love 'm all. I hope to see them a couple of times more.

To put it quite simply, it was one of the greatest nights of my life. I have been so excited to see Kasabian live since I first heard processed beats in 2005. The night was unparalleled, Tommy and serge were fantastic and the set was absolutely brilliant! I could never have imagined being at a better gig than that!

DofE’s profile image

Saw these folk earlier in the year at Glasto, and had seen them on a further two occasions prior. Each time it gets successively better!

The energy, light/stage set and overall performances were all top-notch. The set was also just shy of a full two hours. Top effort and a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Kasabian: AO Arena, Manchester – live review

Kasabian 2 © Michael Bond

As Kasabian stop off in Manchester on their tour of new album The Alchemist’s Euphoria, with Serge Pizzorno taking over the reigns the burning question is “so what would a Serge-fronted Kasabian sound like?”.  Guest reviewer Natalie Royale reports.

I can’t have been the only Kasabian fan prior to this gig at Manchester’s AO Arena with doubts as to what this performance would be like.  I have been a huge fan of the band since 2004 when they released their first, self-titled album, Kasabian; and when I’ve previously seen them live the band seemed to hinge itself on the chemistry that existed between (then) front man Tom Meighan and co-vocalist, songwriter and guitarist, Sergio (Serge) Pizzorno.

Whilst Serge’s role back then seemed to be to provide the songwriting talent and musical enquiry, Meighan was always the band’s connection to the crowd.  After the departure of Meighan in 2020, when he was convicted of assaulting his partner, a new frontman was required and there was only really ever one person in the running – step up to centre-stage Mr Pizzorno.

Kasabian 6 © Michael Bond

The band are touring their seventh studio album, The Alchemist’s Euphoria – their first with Pizzorno in the driver’s seat – and euphoria is undeniably the mood radiating from the sell-out crowd.  They open with Rocket Fuel – an industrial rave-like song with echoes of The Prodigy, the bassy thud that hits you in your stomach immediately getting the crowd bouncing along.  Pizzorno looks every inch the rock star – literally larger than life, with his 6’4” frame engulfed in a huge graffiti-covered puffer jacket, which unfortunately doesn’t last too long before it’s removed so he can carry on throwing himself energetically around the stage.

The band are fresh from the European leg of this tour and, although this Manchester show isn’t technically a homecoming gig for the Leicester rockers, you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise.  Pizzorno announces that “Manchester is where it’s f*&^ing at” and demands that we “sing our f^&*ing hearts out as loud as we can” – with the crowd only too happy to oblige.

Kasabian 3 © Michael Bond

Rocket Fuel is followed by three of their older, more anthemic tracks –  Club Foot, Ill Ray (The King) and Underdog, which all sound fresh and as loud and as large as the arena itself.  The whole crowd is bouncing, from the front barrier right to the back in the nosebleed seats.

CHEMICALS comes next with the melodic verse contrasting magnificently with the huge chorus.  Pizzorno’s energy is nothing short of infectious and this energy doesn’t fade all night, apart from one moment during the instrumental in TUE where, if you close your eyes, you could be forgiven for thinking you were at an early 1970s Pink Floyd concert, which provides a welcome moment to recover from all the dancing. They play Processed Beats for the first time since 2014 – and Serge dedicates the song to all the fans from ‘back in the day’ and thanks them for sticking around.  The crowd thank him right back as Pizzorno lowers the mic and lets the audience sing his chorus right back at him.

There is a clear mutual appreciation going on, Pizzorno spending a large portion of this gig applauding the crowd, hands raised above his head, with the audience roaring their gratitude right back at him.  The band even give an extra nod to the City’s musical heritage when they mix their 2004 hit Cutt Off (the first airing of this song since 2015) with Manchester legends The Stone Roses’ Waterfall, which goes down a storm with the crowd.

Kasabian 1 © Michael Bond

The new lineup is definitely more The Serge Show than the original Meighan-fronted Kasabian, but with a songwriter, producer and frontman like Serge, what’s not to love?  Their new songs blend effortlessly with the old classics, and you get a feeling Pizzorno is performing these older songs the way he always intended them to be performed.  Pizzorno (the musical and lyrical alchemist) is definitely euphoric in his new role.  What could have spelt the end for one of the UK’s most popular bands has resulted in a resounding comeback, and the band feel and sound stronger, tighter – and LOUDER – than ever –  I have never felt energy like it.

My advice?  If you get the chance to go and watch Kasabian on this tour – GO.  And be prepared to bounce.

‘We couldn’t end the story like that’ … from left, Ian Matthews, Chris Edwards, Serge Pizzorno and Tim Carter; their new album is called The Alchemist’s Euphoria.

Kasabian on sacking their frontman: ‘It was like seeing your house burn down’

The band are back – with their first record since sacking Tom Meighan for assaulting his fiancee. Serge Pizzorno talks about that ‘heartbreaking’ decision – and why he finally decided to step up as singer

I n the summer of 2020, a few weeks after firing their frontman Tom Meighan for assaulting his then-fiancee Vikki Ager, the two remaining founder members of Kasabian met up and asked themselves: “What now?” Radio stations had stopped playing their music. All the success of the past 17 years – during which the Leicester group became one of Britain’s biggest bands, with five No 1 albums, plus a debut that went three-times platinum – felt suddenly tainted. Winding things up seemed the next logical step, given they were now without their bolshie ringleader singer, whose ability to whip up a crowd had been crucial to their ascent. But Serge Pizzorno, Kasabian’s songwriter and leader, didn’t see it that way. “We can’t end the story like this,” he thought.

It’s a cold spring morning and, on a sleepy lane on the outskirts of Leicester, the gates to Pizzorno’s house creak open. He emerges from his front door, tall, wiry and smiling, much more gently mannered than the belligerent anthems he’s become famous for might suggest. Pizzorno, now 41, leads me down the side of his house, along the garden, past his kids’ climbing frames and through a gap in the hedge, where a jet-black two-storey building awaits. A Japanese-style lightbox sign sticking out from the side tells us where we are: The Sergery, Pizzorno’s home studio. “I love Japan so much,” he enthuses, pointing up at the sign. “There’s a mega bit in Tokyo called Omotesando. I wanted a sign that would look like it’s from a street there. Those little details are so important to me.”

This is where Kasabian recorded the bulk of their excellent new album, The Alchemist’s Euphoria, their first record since sacking Meighan, with Pizzorno stepping up to become the quartet’s vocalist and frontman. It plays up the adventurousness that has defined the band’s music away from their big indie-rock anthems, where Pizzorno’s love of hip-hop, electro, psychedelic off-roading and Italian film soundtracks comes to the fore.

Some songs burn with the urgency of a band desperate to map out a new future but there’s also a feeling of loss: even the heaviest moments contain diversions into minor-chord majesty, as on the sweeping mini-prog epic TUVE, and the spiked grooves of recent single Scriptvre. Pizzorno’s vocals sometimes resemble Meighan’s aggro delivery when the music is full pelt, but in the more mellow moments his soft croon is starkly different.

Community service … Tom Meighan leaves Leicester magistrates’ court in July 2020.

Pizzorno never wanted to be a frontman: initially, the band wondered if they should get a new singer. The more Pizzorno thought about it, though, the more he became convinced he was the man for the job. “I know these songs,” he says, taking a seat by the mixing desk. “They’re ingrained in my soul. I know exactly where I was when I wrote every word. It would be difficult for me to convey that to someone new.”

After Meighan’s exit, getting back into the studio was therapy for Pizzorno. “We were all set up to play stadiums and make another record,” he says. “I had these amazing pieces of music, so I came in here and started to write for fun.” He says he is still coming to terms with the events surrounding the departure of Meighan, who was sentenced to community service three months after the assault.

Domestic abuse charities criticised the 200-hour order as insufficient, given it was revealed in court that Meighan had repeatedly struck Ager, held her by the throat and dragged her by the ankles. The couple have since married.

“The summer when Tom left was absolutely heartbreaking,” Pizzorno says. “It felt like leaving home and coming back and seeing it burnt down, walking round the ashes, seeing old pictures and artefacts and picking things up and sifting through the destruction. It was an intense time.” He pauses then continues: “Over the years, we’ve dealt with a lot. When it all came out, you’d see things being said and written that were hard to take because you’ve lived it – you know the true story.”

A highlight of the new record is a seething Prodigy-style banger called Rocket Fuel, which addresses the flak Pizzorno feels has come his way from fans aggrieved the group didn’t give Meighan a second chance. “It always amazes me how strong people’s opinions are when they don’t know anything about the actual truth,” he says. “There’s way more to it. Who in their right mind would sack a frontman if there wasn’t cause?”

He goes on: “Over the years, there have been some tough moments. I don’t want to go into them because I feel like that’s the band’s business.”

After apologising Meighan announced he was suffering from alcohol addiction, and had been diagnosed with ADHD. “With Tom, all we ever tried was love and support. There were times when we needed professional help – that was all taken care of. But when we were finally made aware of the incident, he’d crossed the line at that point.” The most hurtful thing you could level at him or the band, Pizzorno says, is that they weren’t there for Meighan, or didn’t try everything they could over the years. He chews over a question about whether he misses the singer, eventually saying: “I miss who Tom used to be.”

A few days later, speaking by phone, bass-player Chris Edwards adds: “I think part of Tom wanted to go solo but he didn’t have the heart to tell us. A couple of weeks after the incident, Tom said he was going to go solo and the band had split up. As soon as we heard this, me and Serge sat down and said, ‘Do you want to keep doing this?’ It’s all we know, so if we can do it and the fans still want it, let’s go for it.”

‘I miss who Tom used to be’ … the band perform in Austin, Texas, in 2005.

Meighan has since launched his solo career with a UK tour and is currently preparing his debut record. “All we ever wanted was for him to be happy,” says Pizzorno, who hasn’t spoken to Meighan since their post-trial meeting. “So if he’s happy doing that, then great.” Edwards hasn’t talked to him for over a year either but says he still cares for him. “The last time we spoke, I said, ‘Mate, if you need help, if you fall off the wagon, if you have problems with anything at home, you can come and stay at mine.’ That’s how we left it – with a hug and we said we loved each other. There’s no malice in the separation. It’s heartbreaking but it’s happened.”

There were some people in the band’s wider circle who questioned their decision to carry on. “They didn’t think I could do it,” says Pizzorno. “And they’re maybe the people I don’t speak to so much any more.” He felt vindicated when rehearsals began for the group’s first post-Meighan tour towards the end of 2021, a feeling heightened by finally going out on stage: “The weight of standing there, front and centre – I was in this incredible state.”

Way back at the beginning of lockdown, before all of this, Pizzorno took the time to look back over everything the band had achieved. “That’s the first time I’d ever stopped in my life,” he says. “I got a chance to sit in a deckchair and go, ‘What the fuck was that about?’” He thought about their wild early days and the time they stayed up all night worrying before their first Glastonbury gig, because they didn’t think anyone would turn up. “It was full – 20,000 people,” he laughs. From that moment on, they believed they could be huge. “We were the perfect cocktail. The mid-90s had a massive impact on our attitude towards success and being in a band. I started with dance music. But once Britpop happened, we were told, ‘Get as big as you can.’ I had that drive.”

That impulse remains, he says, although the ambitions are different. Size is no longer everything. “It’s about wanting to make the music as perfect as it can be, thinking about how I can make a show something where people go, ‘Did you see that?’” He studies his favourite artists– Tyler the Creator, Iggy Pop, Björk, PJ Harvey, plus Liams Howlett and Gallagher – and wants to incorporate a bit of each into who he is as a frontman.

One thing he loved about Kasabian’s return to live performance last year was how young the crowds were. “It needs that mosh in the centre, that bounce from the youth,” he says. “In the surrounding area were people who have been there from the start, but the core were just kids. Seeing them losing their minds, that’s when you know it’s worth carrying on. A whole new generation are getting into it.”

The Alchemist’s Euphoria is released on 5 August on Sony Music Entertainment.

MOSCOW (AP) — A massive fire gutted a shopping mall on Moscow’s eastern outskirts on Monday, the second such blaze in four days.

The blaze at the mall in Balashikha that trades in construction items and home decoration materials first erupted at a storage area and later spread to part of the building. A guard was hospitalized after inhaling toxic fumes from the fire.

Fire-fighting teams managed to localize it to an area of about 9,000 square meters (97,000 square feet) and prevent it from engulfing the entire mall.

Officials said the fire was caused by a short circuit that came amid heavy rain in Moscow.

The blaze follows Friday’s fire that destroyed the huge OBI construction materials store, part of the MEGA shopping mall in Khimki on the Russian capital’s northwestern outskirts.

Officials said that the fire that killed one security guard was sparked by welding that apparently violated safety regulations.
