2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad review notes

Review notes 2014 dodge journey crossroad.

The customer preferred package adds a bunch of fantastic features to the 2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad.

That said, the 2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad at least has a bit of a visual edge. Smokey black wheels, smoked head- and taillights, a blacked-out grille -- as someone who hates unnecessarily tacked-on bling, I think this looks OK. I wouldn’t call it manly, but it does make a relatively inoffensive set of lines a tad more aggressive.

You hop into the Journey half expecting to be assaulted by cheap plastics, cheaply assembled. Or at least I did. But it’s not bad at all -- the Crossroad package’s leather-wrapped steering wheel is a nice plus, and the fluid center console nicely updates the interior. I shouldn’t be surprised; a drive towards improved interior quality is apparent across the entire Mopar lineup. The last bastion of subpar quality touch points seems to be a very chintzy blinker/wiper control stalk. I can live with that.

Dodge says you can get into a Journey for right around $20,000, but the optional V6 is the way to go here; I can’t imagine how the little four-cylinder would get this thing moving in a non-excruciating manner, especially if you tack on the all-wheel drive. It’s certainly less numb than its Korean counterparts -- I’d like to do a head-to-head with a comparably equipped Ford Escape.

As far as smoothness goes, though, you’re better off with a Honda CR-V . Shifts were lazy and sometimes clunky, especially at lower speeds (like rush-hour stop-and-go traffic). This is something I’ve noticed on a lot of cars lately, including the Chevy Cruze; not sure if this is a fuel economy measure or what, but you’d think automakers would have figured out the six-speed in this age of nine-speeds.

And features do come up short in some areas. The driver’s seat is only partially power adjustable, and though that seat gets an auto-down window -- the only one to do so -- it doesn’t have an auto-up feature. As someone more or less content with manual roll-downs, I bring this up because it shows where corners were cut (or at least trimmed).

The 2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad comes in at a base price of $29,390 with our tester topping off at $31,380.

DIGITAL EDITOR ANDREW STOY: As Graham mentions, the Dodge Journey Crossroad does show evidence of some cost cutting, but it's been done in ways that are mostly unobtrusive; the result is something rare in the new-vehicle market: A lot of car for the money.

Consider that, for $31K and change, Dodge is offering a roomy, attractive five-passenger crossover with a stout V6, all-wheel drive, navigation, heated seats and steering wheel and the excellent UConnect infotainment system. Seven-passenger seating is also available -- it adds $1,500 to the sticker but also comes with more flexible second-row seats and rear heat and A/C, making the Journey a compelling option for families and explaining why it’s Dodge’s best-seller behind the Grand Caravan .

I also noticed the clunks emanating from our tester’s six-speed automatic, particularly at very low speeds when coming to a stop or transitioning from a near-stop to accelerating. There was also a low harmonic hum from the engine compartment most noticeable at idle -- switching the A/C on and off and loading the electrical system seemed to have no impact on the noise so I’m still not sure what it was and whether or not it was normal.

At this point I’ll chalk it up to some lack of refinement in the powertrain, as there didn’t appear to be any actual problems with the Journey. In fact, its AWD system and V6 pulled me through some torrential summer downpours without a hitch, and its size -- roomy without being too big -- and ground clearance were just about perfect for nasty weather. I’d imagine it would make a fantastic winter driver as well.

Though the Pentastar V6 delivers plenty of paper horsepower, I’ve never found an application where it feels as strong as its numbers suggest -- from Ram 1500 to Chrysler 200 to this Journey, it simply doesn’t seem like there’s 280+ hp underfoot. I suspect it’s due to the engine’s relatively high-rpm torque peak (4,400 rpm); in the 2-ton-plus Journey AWD you’ve got to put your foot in it to get anywhere in a hurry, reflected in mediocre fuel economy numbers. As other testers mentioned, the four-cylinder would likely be totally inadequate, so if you have visions of saving money and gas with a 2.4-liter Journey, think again.

Still, the purchase of a daily driver/family car is a game of tradeoffs, and the 2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad gives buyers a ton of what they’re looking for in a kid-schlepper. A great feature set, AWD capability and hopped-up station wagon good looks don’t necessarily equal driving excitement, but it’s a fine way to commute home in the evenings.

The 2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad comes in second as Dodge's best-seller closely behind the Grand Caravan.

SENIOR ROAD TEST EDITOR NATALIE NEFF: My brother was recently in the market for a new vehicle, having just added to his family with baby number two. And while our parents somehow made do with compact to midsize sedans -- my family traveled everywhere in an, ahem, four-passenger Ford Escort , all three of us kids (do the math) fighting for elbow space in the back while Dad toted Mom and us all over the state -- shuttling around children today seems to have evolved into a wholly different type of exercise. The gear alone for a baby and toddler could fill a typical SUV; my dad’s little Escort hatchback would’ve been overwhelmed today.

My sister-in-law was already barely managing with a Saturn Aura . The task of getting my 99th-percentile, 2-and-a-half-year-old nephew in and out of his car seat had become major back-breaking work. But having the room to put both a rear-facing infant seat and a 40-pound toddler seat required an upgrade, so my brother checked out, among about a 100 other rides, a 2-year-old Dodge Journey. He did not like it. He hated the way it handled, felt it was grossly underpowered, and did not approve of the interior quality.

I did not see the Journey he test-drove, but about a week later I got into this one and came away with a completely different opinion. I know this is going to come across as snarky or disparaging, but seriously, I was surprised at how credible I found the Journey.

For all the reasons cited by Mr. Stoy, the Journey really proved to be as honest a vehicle as I’ve driven, with all the goodies any family on the go might need save for a toilet. And at $31K, I doubt there are many other contenders that offer near as much. The Journey package is compelling, to say the least. Add all-wheel drive, the preferred and navigation packages, and this genuinely attractive Crossroad treatment, and I can’t see many folks walking away terribly disappointed.

I did not find it horribly underpowered, either. Then again, I am probably one of those who keeps my foot buried in everything. I did experience the same clunks from the tranny, but really, I guess I was expecting a lot LESS refinement from the Journey.

My brother, by the way, bought a Dodge Grand Caravan .

The 2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad receives a full sport treatment with the Crossroad edition.

Options: Customer preferred package 28V including popular equipment group, security alarm, high beam daytime running headlamps, universal garage door opener, automatic headlamps, heated steering wheel, heated front seats, remote start system ($995); navigation and sound group I including leather wrapped shift knob, leather wrapped steering wheel, Garmin navigation system, Uconnect 8.4N CD/DVD/MP3/NAV, SiriusXM traffic including one-year traffic service, SiriunsXM travel link including one-year subscription, ParkView rear back-up camera, ParkSense rear park assist system, universal garage door opener ($995)

Road Test Review – 2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad

The dodge journey is updated for 2014 with yet another special edition: this one called the crossroad. it complements the blacktop journey with pricing from about $25,000 – which is a big jump from the advertised base pricing for the journey that starts at $20,000., this is the first dodge, ram or chrysler review i have written since january 12th when the ram mossy oak debuted in detroit., i would like to report good things – that this car was such a revelation that it made me cover chrysler brands again. that is absolutely not the case with the $31,000 2014 dodge journey crossroad., in fact, even visiting the crossroad page on dodge’s site crashes my firefox. it is not a coincidence – the crossroad dodge.com page crashed it thrice in a row.  try it, for firefox users, expect your browser to crash immediately after the page opens., http://www.dodge.com/en/special-editions/journey-crossroad/#2, the only way i could even grab that link was to use chrome briefly., journey crossroad issues, as the v6-engine, awd model, this journey crossroad is near the top of the range. this car, however, lacked the one usp that the journey should offer buyers: a third row seat. it is an optional feature that was not included here., even with just a brief spin up the road, you can note a variety of serious failures in the journey – which is a reheat of all the worst chrysler and dodge ideas of the last decade. the fact that this old heap is still being forced on buyers is regretful – even with all my favorite exterior tweaks like dark wheels, tinted lamps and sporty body pieces — the journey is clearly from the same pen that gave us the reviled dodge calibre., all of the styling, even on this upgraded and range-topping crossroad model, immediately recalls the block-based design that is best known from the first-gen dodge caravan and plymouth voyager. the one from the 1980s.,  road test review – 2014 dodge journey crossroad, here is a quick run-down of the issues identified on the test drive:, cabin problems – 2014 dodge journey crossroad, — driving position is compromised by poor seat range and lack of steering wheel adjustment. the best option is an upright and van-tastic pose with arms stretched out like a zombie., — seats are new but still woeful – they feel just like the 1996 town & country seats, — seat base is far too short, — steering wheel is atrocious, and the overall interior layout is extremely upright like a minivan from all perspectives, — optional infotainment is the identikit 8.4-inch touchscreen, with kiddie-style graphics, — clunky gear-lever, — small second row access via oddly positioned door openings and high sills, — rear cargo area seems very small, and the fit/finish of the rear sunshade is extremely embarrassing.

DRIVING PROBLEMS – 2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad

— smooth initial takeoff but spongy brakes and springy throttle, — steering is somewhat effortless but non-centering and lazy in its reactions, plus heavy to return to center after the corner is complete. junk., — body quivers and shimmies are evident even at low-speed maneuvers, — visibility is poor to all angles, particularly to the sides and rear — but not good to the front either, — fuel economy is extremely uncompetitive versus crossovers and small suvs due to the four-speed automatic in the four-banger and six-speed in the v6 limited and r/t models., — highway mpg tops out at 26 mpg – but observed mpg will struggle to crest 22 mpg.

Road Test Review - 2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad - We Would Cross the Road to Avoid 28

That list is pretty damning evidence for a car reporter, especially considering the car’s price and ambitious options package upgrades.

It is regrettable that i am no longer a chrysler champion, but this view is my own. it is subjective., in the fall, i wrote glowing praise of the ram ecodiesel on another site. but i would challenge any car writer to praise the journey whatsoever on its merits. it is a hunk of junk., while writing this, i was thinking to myself: would this car be decent with a price of $21,000 versus $31,000 it would be better value, that is for sure, but it would not be an appealing design even if marked down to $5 total., i struggle to fathom who would decide this was the best car on the market for their needs — literally anything else would be a better decision. a town & country with heavy crash damage would be a better and more useful family machine. certainly a better investment., all this critical heat for the loaded model is bad, bad news for the front-drive base models that run a far older and less-advanced drivetrain. overall, it proves without a doubt that this is a car to avoid., i would cross the road not to drive the crossroad again – and therefore will highly recommend anything else to family car shoppers..

2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad

Dodge->ke28 will expand its Journey lineup with the addition of a new Crossroad version that it will unveil at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show->ke225 . It comes just a few weeks after Dodge announced that 2013 model year was the Journey's best sales year ever, and Dodge hopes that this new version of the model will enjoy the same success as the rest of the Journey lineup.

The new Journey->ke2848 Crossroad will be distinguished by a specially designed front and rear fascia, platinum chrome and black elements, plus a series of updates for the interior. The only problem is that the model comes with pretty much no upgrades under the hood, so the customers will have to choose between the usual four-cylinder and V-6 engines.

The new Dodge Journey Crossroad will be placed between the current SXT and Limited models in the Journey lineup and will be priced from $24,995. Sales will begin later this spring.

The same gloss-black treatment is also applied to the roof rails, side sills, the headlamp bezels and the lower rear fascia.

On the rear, the taillight bezels are finished in gloss black to finish off the accents.

Standard on the Journey Crossroad are 19-inch, Hyper Black, five-spoke aluminum wheels.

Customers can choose between the following exterior colors: Pitch Black, Bright Silver Metallic, White, Copperhead Pearl, Fathom Blue Pearl, Granite Crystal Metallic, Pearl White Tri-Coat and Redline Red 2-coat Pearl.

The same black treatment continues on the interior, where the new Journey Crossroad adds black leather seating with sport mesh inserts and cool Light Slate Grey accent stitching. The same stitching is applied to the center armrest, door panels, and the leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

As a special feature, the company will add a new Liquid Graphite finish applied on the instrument panel, gauge cluster, center console, door pulls and steering wheel trim.

Competition

Chevrolet Equinox

The Equinox is one of the best-sold models in Chevrolet's lineup with over 200,000 units sold per year in the United States.

Just like the Journey, the 2014 Equinox is offered with a choice of two engines: a 2.4 liter four-cylinder that delivers 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.6-liter V-6 that cranks out a tidy 301 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque. The most powerful version goes from 0 to 60 mph in about seven seconds, and up to a top speed of 130 mph.

Prices for the Equinox start at $24,225.

Ford Escape

Ford launched the new Escape back in 2011, and in less than two years the model become one of America’s best-selling SUVs.

The 2014 Escape is offered with a choice of three engines: an updated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine matched to a SelectShift Automatic six-speed, a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost unit.

Prices for the 2014 Escape start at $22,700.

The 2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad comes at a time when the Journey is thriving, and customers are sure to gobble this thing up just as quickly. The model features a series of upgrades, but not too many that end up driving the price sky high.

  • The Crossroad builds on the well-equipped success of the mid-level Journey SXT Plus, and includes Chrysler's excellent 8.4-inch UConnect infotainment system with Bluetooth and satellite radio, as well as dual-zone climate control.
  • While the Crossroad doesn't add any new tech to the package, it butches up the looks of the mostly inconspicuous Journey body with off-road-inspired front and rear fascias that give the model more of a crossover look (the standard model can still look a lot like a minivan or wagon). That newfound attitude is furthered by the inclusion of 19-inch black-finish five-spoke wheels, dark chrome grille surrounds, smoked taillights and black headlight housings.
  • The Crossroad's cabin includes leather seats with "sport mesh" inserts, while liquid graphite trim pieces add some flash to the plasticky cabin. While they're largely from the Chrysler parts bin, the addition of a leather-wrapped wheel and gearshift knob (both part of the Crossroad trim) help elevate the cabin to a somewhat more premium feel.
  • Dodge offers a prehistoric 2.4-liter engine and four-speed automatic on the Journey, but we feel confident in saying you really don't want this. Instead, upgrade to the aforementioned 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 ($1,700 on the front-wheel-drive model, or $3,400 for the all-wheel-drive six-cylinder). This V6 sings to the tune of 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, which is plenty of grunt for the 4,238-pounder. Adding the Pentastar also adds a six-speed automatic. The downside of this package, though, is that you'll be netting mediocre fuel economy – the best the Pentastar/AWD Journey can hope for is a dismal 16 miles per gallon in the city and 24 on the highway.
  • We shouldn't be surprised, but the Pentastar/6AT combination is still very good to drive several years after its debut. Power is abundant, and the V6's revvy nature makes it a surprising bit of fun. It sounds quite nice, too. The six-speed is quick on upshifts, although we found the Crossroad's unit to be slower than we remember on downshifts.
  • The ride isn't too objectionable. Secondary impacts (body shuddering and whatnot) can be present, but they only really popped up on some of the worst roads we came across. On smoother thoroughfares, there is nothing terribly offensive about the ride, aside from a excess of vertical movement, and the addition of 19-inch wheels has done surprisingly little to hurt the ride much, either.
  • The Journey's driving environment is a fairly typical one for the CUV market. The driver rides high, and the range of adjustment on the six-way power driver's seat is just fine. The seats themselves aren't heavily bolstered (a plus for easy ingress/egress), but we still think they'd be quite comfortable for long hauls.
  • Of course, the folks who buy the Journey aren't likely to be too interested in dynamic driving impressions. As a family vehicle, there's little reason to think that the Crossroad wouldn't make a suitable companion for those who need two rows everyday, but who appreciate the additional utility provided by an extra pair of seats. Space in the second row is certainly manageable for the longer-legged, although not surprisingly, the optional third row is somewhat cramped. Opting for the third row, though, does add a tilt/slide function to the second row and a recline function to the third, both of which are rather nice.
  • The third row does, however, have a big impact on cargo volume, as it shrinks from 37 cubic feet to just 10.7 cu ft when the back seats aren't stowed.
  • Prices for the Journey Crossroad start at a very reasonable $24,995 for a front-drive model, although the sticker will read at least $28,395 if you want something like our all-wheel-drive, V6-powered tester. From there, things can increase quickly. There are eight different optional packages that add everything from the aforementioned third-row seats, to a backup camera, upgraded stereo and heated seats. In our case, we had all of that, and then some.
  • With an as-tested price of $32,315, our Journey included a sunroof ($1,095), upgraded 368-watt, six-speaker stereo ($395), a navigation and backup camera pack ($995), a Popular Equipment package (heated seats and steering wheel, plus automatic headlamps for $995), a rear-seat entertainment system ($1,195) and the optional third-row seats, which added a tilt and sliding function for the second row ($1,500). As we mentioned earlier, we'd strongly recommend opting for the $3,400 AWD/Pentastar combo.
