False Creek is a body of water that was once an industrial hub but has since been gentrified and is now home to many high-rise apartments, parks, and a marina.

You’ll get amazing views of the West End and Yaletown from the water, and as you travel the inlet, you’ll also see downtown Eastside.  

You’ll get to paddle with harbour seals, cormorants, and even geese!

It is surrounded by downtown Vancouver on three sides making for some stunning scenery as you paddle around.

Just be sure to stay close to the shore as the water can get choppy in the middle of the inlet.

Jericho Beach is the home of the Jericho Sailing Center Association and is a great place to go for your water activities while visiting Vancouver.

Jericho Beach is a beautiful sandy beach located in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood.

It is an oceanfront area that sits between Kitsilano and West Point Grey. Typically, the East Side of the beach is reserved more for swimming while the West Side is where you’ll want to go to participate in water sports.

It’s a great place to go for a swim, sunbathe, or picnic on a sunny day.

And it’s also one of the best places to go kayaking in Vancouver!

I recommend kayaking along the north shore to get views of the mountains. But many people prefer to kayak hop amongst the sandy beaches along the southern Spanish Banks.

Be mindful of boaters and kiteboarders who may feel they have the right of way on the water.

Stanley Park is best known for its seawall, even though it’s in the heart of the city – the best of all worlds. 

Surrounded by the Burrard Inlet and English Bay, it’s a great place to kayak and take in the views of the historic parks and beautiful trees in the area. You can cross into this area directly from Jericho, so it’s easy to access!

Most people opt to cycle around the park or walk the pathways, but they’re missing out on the best views!

The best time of year to enjoy this paddling experience in Vancouver is in summer, June through September, when the winds are calmer so it’s easier to paddle.

4) Deep Cove Kayaking in Indian Arm

I could spend weeks every summer at this gorgeous beach listening to the waves. On busy days, you may be dodgeing beach volleyballs as they get spiked over nets on the crowded sand.

Kits Beach is also a great place to kayak as it’s located near False Creek. This means there are no waves to contend with and the water is usually quite calm.

You can launch your kayak from the beach or nearby Kitsilano Yacht Club. And if you get tired of paddling, you can always pull up on one of the many docks lining False Creek and take a break.

Just be careful of the heavy boat traffic as you paddle around. There are often large ferries and pleasure boats cruising through the waters.

Bowen Island is accessible by ferry in West Vancouver. Once there, you’ll find Bowen Island Sea Kayaking, which offers both kayaking and paddle boarding for all your water adventure needs. 

It’s located in Howe Sound and is considered one of the most beautiful places in British Columbia.

This is a great option if you want to paddle in some salt water but don’t want to go too far from the city. You can take a short ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay to get to Bowen Island.

Once you’re there, you’ll find plenty of sheltered coves and beaches to explore by kayak.

The island is also a great place to go camping , with many campsites located near the water. So you can paddle during the day and relax by the campfire at night.

Just be sure to bring your camera as there are some stunning views of Howe Sound and the surrounding islands.

Bowen Island is also home to a number of artists and galleries, so be sure to check them out while you’re there. I love hanging up my paddle for some hiking boots to explore the island’s trails leading to overlooks with panoramic views of the ocean.

Can you kayak from Vancouver to Bowen Island?

Yes, you can kayak from Vancouver to Bowen Island! It’s a great way to see the city from the water and get some exercise in at the same time.

The trip takes about 2 hours, depending on your pace and stops along the way.

I recommend starting from Kitsilano Beach and paddling around False Creek before crossing over to Granville Island. From there, you can head across English Bay to Stanley Park.

Once you’re in the park, paddle around Lost Lagoon or Beaver Lake before crossing over to where the ferries leave for Bowen Island.

The whole trip is about 12 kilometers and is suitable for kayakers of all levels.

Just be sure to pack some snacks and water, as there are no stops along the way to get supplies.

8) Porteau Marine Park

Porteau Marine Park is a Provincial Marine Park located just south of Squamish on the Sea to Sky Highway. The park offers picnicking, camping, swimming, windsurfing, and a boat launch.

You can explore the beach and go diving or snorkelling here. Remember to practise Leave No Trace ethics when observing marine life by not removing or handling wildlife and leaving everything as you find it.

If you’re interested in stargazing, the park is a great place to see the northern lights .

Canoeing and kayaking are also available in the ocean area. Just be careful of the strong currents and tides. You can rent a kayak in Squamish or bring your own.

Porteau Cove is a great place to kayak if you’re looking for a challenge. The waters can be rough, so it’s not recommended for beginners. But if you’re up for an adventure, it’s a beautiful place to paddle.

9) Horseshoe Bay and Howe Sound

Horseshoe Bay is the southernmost entry point to Howe Sound, making it a great place to start your kayaking adventure.

Howe Sound is a narrow inlet of the Pacific Ocean between Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast. It’s known for its dramatic scenery, with towering mountains and rocky shores.

This 42 km long fjord (a long, deep, narrow body of water) is known for excellence in water activities. It joins a number of other fjords northwest of Vancouver. 

You can paddle around the bay and explore the many coves and islands. Be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife, including seals, eagles, and otters. Seals regularly take an interest in kayakers.

You may even get lucky enough to spot a whale !

It is the perfect place to book a kayaking trip because it has incredible views, but keep in mind this will probably entail a multi-day trip stopping to camp along the way.

There are also 6 wilderness campsites located in Howe Sound, so you can paddle during the day and camp under the stars at night.

Just be aware that conditions can change quickly in Howe Sound, so always check the weather forecast before heading out.

Although the 40km marine trail can be paddled in a very intense single day, it’s better to spread out your experience. Make the most of the rugged shorelines featuring my favourite – rocky beaches. And enjoy views of the snowcapped Whistler mountain in the distance.

Granville Island is a hub of activity, with a bustling public market, shops, restaurants, and art galleries.

It’s also a great place to go kayaking!

Vancouver Water Adventures offers kayak rentals and tours from their location on Granville Island. Kayak rentals from Granville Island is sure to be a highlight of any trip.

You can explore the False Creek area, paddle under the Granville Street Bridge, and check out the Vancouver skyline.

Granville Island is a great place to start your kayaking adventure because it’s close to downtown and there are plenty of things to see and do in the area.

You can get to it by traveling across False Creek from downtown, and it’s known for its great food, so after your water adventure you’ll be able to get something delicious!

11) Chilliwack River

The Chilliwack River is a great place to kayak for both beginners and experienced kayakers.

The river is relatively calm, making it a good choice for those new to the sport.

And there are plenty of things to see and do along the way, including fishing, swimming, and picnicking.

It’s a famous spot in Canada for whitewater rafting, so if you’re looking for a thrill, this is the place for you.

Just be aware that the water level can rise quickly during the rainy season, so it’s important to check the conditions before heading out.

12) Coast Mountains

The Coast Mountains are one of the most unique places to kayak in Canada .

In Newfoundland, you can paddle upto a glacier. But here in BC, you can kayak ON a glacier at the Coast Mountains.

In the Garibaldi Mountain range, you’ll find the Coast Mountains. For a short time in late spring, the glacier lakes begin to melt on the service in slushie-blue coloured rivers throughout the mountains.

This creates a playground for kayakers of all levels where you can explore and paddle through some of the most stunning scenery in BC.

13) Desolation Sound

Desolation Sound is one of the most popular kayaking destinations in Canada.

It’s known for its dramatic scenery, with towering mountains and rocky shores.

You can paddle around the bay and explore the many coves and islands. Be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife, including seals, eagles, and otters.

When I asked British Columbians where to go kayaking, about 50% of them told me that Desolation Sound is their #1 pick! The warm waters alone seemed to have it towering above other kayaking destinations.

With 60km of coastline to explore, you can easily spend a weekend or more kayaking in Desolation Sound.

If you paddle a few more kilometres, you can reach the Powell Forest Canoe route that leads you on an inland journey for a few days.

14) Capilano River

You’ve heard of the Capilano Suspension Bridge, but have you ever been told to kayak the Capilano River?

Locals know this river better than tourists – who seem to arrive for the suspension bridge then immediately head to Whistler.

But the Capilano river is where it’s at.

This is a advanced kayaking trip that’s best done in the spring when the water levels are higher.

You’ll find 5.6km of river to paddle with plenty of rapids and waves to keep you entertained.

Just be sure to wear a helmet and expect to get wet!

The best put in spot is at the salmon hatchery at the top of the river.

From there, you can paddle downstream and take out at Capilano Road.

But be aware that this is more of a whitewater kayaking situation than a peaceful paddle. In fact, it’s recommended that beginner kayakers avoid this area, even with a guide.

Can you kayak on Capilano Lake?

Yes, you can kayak on Capilano Lake! This is a great option for those looking for a peaceful paddle with stunning scenery.

The lake is located in North Vancouver and is about 5.5km long.

You can put in your kayak at Capilano Dam and paddle around the lake. There are also a few small beaches where you can stop and take a break.

15) Egmont Bioluminescent Kayaking

Egmont is a small town on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia.

And while it’s best known as the gateway to world-famous Skookumchuck Rapids, it’s also home to some of the best kayaking in BC.

In particular, the bioluminescent kayaking is an experience you won’t find anywhere else in the province.

Every night, the waters of Sechelt Inlet come alive with a natural light show.

As you paddle through the water, the movement creates a blue-green glow that’s simply magical.

It’s an unforgettable experience and one that should definitely be on your BC kayaking list!

Unlike some kayaking where it’s a bit rough or is about chatting with others, this experience feels quite meditative as you take in the nocturnal world and the glowing waters beneath your paddle.

When kayaking in Vancouver, you should keep the water temperature in mind over the weather. You are more than likely going to get wet – and if you’re a beginner, possibly end up in the water! – so it’s best to be dressed for this situation.

Avoid cotton fabrics as they hold water and tend to stay wet and clingy on you if they become wet. They make suits specifically for kayaking, but if you choose suitable fabrics for your clothing, you can stay comfortable on your excursion. Also, invest in waterproof shoes or wear older shoes you don’t mind getting wet. 

Instead, opt for synthetic materials or wool.

Layering is also important. So you can add or remove layers as the temperature changes.

Finally, make sure you wear shoes that can get wet. Like sandals or water shoes.

While there may be more boat traffic around Granville Island, it’s still a fantastic spot for kayaking and provides a different perspective of Vancouver. Plus, the boats are limited in their speed and generally are very respectful of Granville Island kayak traffic.

I’ve kayaked and paddle-boarded down False Creek so many times and I always have fun. There’s so much going on, plenty of seal sightings and seeing the city from the water is just beautiful.

Desolation Sound is arguably one of the best places for kayaking near Vancouver.

I personally spent three days kayaking and camping in Desolation Sound . And even in the worst weather conditions, I had an unforgettable time and was completely wowed by the stunning scenery and incredible wildlife.

Kayaking through the calm waters of Desolation Sound, you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking mountains, lush forests, and sparkling waters.

You’ll also have the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife, including seals, sea lions, dolphins, and even whales.

Camping on the nearby islands provides a truly immersive experience, allowing you to fully disconnect and appreciate the natural beauty of the area.

Located just a short drive east of the city, this river offers a unique and exhilarating kayaking experience. The river is characterized by its clear blue and mostly calm waters with a beautiful mountain backdrop of Golden Ears Provincial Park.

In the summer, the water is pleasingly refreshing and I enjoyed swimming alongside my paddleboard while exploring this area.

With just a 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale and a 25-minute drive to Sechelt, you’ll be in the heart of some of the best paddling destinations in the area.

For those with their own kayak, exploring the Sechelt Inlet is a great option. Alternatively, paddle over to Buccaneer Bay on Thormanby Island for a relaxing day on the lovely beach.

If you don’t have your own kayak, Halfmoon Sea Kayaks offers rentals for a great price. You can head out on the waters at Secret Cove and explore its tranquil lagoons.

You can kayak in False Creek and the harbour area there, but you cannot kayak on the eastern side of Lions Gate Bridge and the harbour around Coal Harbour and the Convention Centre.

Hit the Water in British Columbia's Largest City

Kayaking is as popular as hiking in Vancouver, Canada, known for its natural beauty. Being on the water is an ideal way to discover all that the inlets, beaches, and bays have to offer. Most Vancouverites grew up spending at least summers on the water and will tell you that kayaking brings you in touch with nature like no other sport. To look waterfowl in the eye while paddling at the same level and to encounter a seal bobbing up and looking at you while doing some sea kayaking, makes for a memorable outing.

Kayaking around this Canadian city is appealing for two reasons: it doesn't require any special skills (although you should read the Transport Canada Sea Kayaking Safety Guide ), and it immerses you in nature in a way no land-based activity can. It's also lots of fun and great exercise for the whole family.

False Creek in Downtown Vancouver

One of the best year-round kayaking spots is False Creek, the inlet that divides downtown Vancouver from the southern parts of the city. It's fun to paddle among the boats moored there, see the little round ferries that ply the waters going across the inlet and look up to see stunning views of Vancouver’s downtown area.

It's not all urban. You'll spot wildlife like harbor seals, cormorants swooping in the water to catch a fish, and geese swimming lazily close to you.

Rent a kayak and start paddling at Granville Island , head east to explore Yaletown's waterfront, the marinas and Science World , or head west to Vanier Park (home to the Museum of Vancouver (MOV) , the Vancouver Maritime Museum , and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre). And if you are on the water in the late afternoon, experience a beautiful sunset before you return your kayak.

Jericho Beach

For sea kayaking from April to October, head to Jericho Beach on the western coast of Vancouver between Kitsilano Beach and Spanish Banks Beach . Here, kayakers can head north toward amazing views of Vancouver and the north shore mountains, or follow the coastline south to Spanish Banks, a series of beaches along the shores of English Bay.

You may encounter kiteboarders who are launching their boards from Spanish Banks Extension—it's a one-year pilot program at the beach.

Kayak rentals from businesses like Ecomarine Paddlesport Centre at Jericho Beach are typically available for weekends only in April, then daily from mid-May through mid-September.

English Bay Beach and Stanley Park

Ten minutes northwest of downtown Vancouver, English Bay Beach  and  Stanley Park  are two easy spots to kayak. The summer (June through September) is the most popular season, however, you can kayak from English Bay Beach on the West End any time of year. Paddle around Stanley Park for some of the best views of the snow-capped North Shore Mountains.

Many have walked Stanley Park, but seeing the park from the water is a unique way to get closer to the shorebirds, tidal life, and natural beauty. Ecomarine Paddlesport Centres  offer a Sunset Kayaking Tour which takes you to the Stanley Park beaches to watch the sun go down over the water.

Deep Cove (Indian Arm),

As one of the Top 10 Attractions in Vancouver , Deep Cove is not to be missed and is best kayaked April through October. While kayaking around this stunningly scenic area in the Lower Mainland, keep your eyes peeled for a range of wildlife, including seals, eagles, and sea lions.

You can take a break and stop into one of the quaint eateries at Deep Cove. Fuel up at  Honey Doughnuts & Goodies , popular with the locals—try one of the delicious honey doughnuts.

Deer Lake in Burnaby

Just 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver, Deer Lake in Burnaby is a great option for all ages with the kayaking best from April through October. The water here is smooth and calm and motorized boats are not allowed making it an ideal family-friendly spot to teach the kids how to kayak.

With city views, Deer Lake Park provides a peaceful natural environment that is part of the City of Burnaby’s arts and heritage offerings. The park is busy in summer with people enjoying the walking trails connecting the lake, the Burnaby Art Gallery, the Burnaby Village Museum and Hart House Restaurant housed in a beautiful Tudor mansion.

This trip is our longest offering, and provides visitors the opportunity to explore almost the entire Gwaii Haanas National Park and Haida Heritage Site. This experience starts near the northern boundary of Gwaii Haanas, and culminates near the south end after a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of S G ang Gwaay.

10 Places to Go Kayaking Near Vancouver

Want to see Vancouver from a brand-new perspective? Get in a kayak to view the city from the water. It gets you closer to nature and gives you a bit of exercise too. Vancouver is a coastal city with lots of nearby lakes, so there are lots of places to go kayaking. Sign up for a tour or a lesson, or rent a kayak (and safety gear), then explore the water on your own.

Here are 10 beautiful places to go kayaking near Vancouver. They all have kayaks on site so can get on the water right away. 

False Creek

One of the benefits of having a city surrounded by water is that you can kayak in the heart of downtown. Launch a kayak at Vancouver Water Adventures on Granville Island to explore False Creek. (That’s the narrow inlet that divides Yaletown from the Fairview neighbourhood.) You’ll get rare waterside views of BC Place Stadium, Science World, Olympic Village, and unique floating homes. The protected waters and low motorboat traffic make it a great destination for beginners.

On hot summer days, Kitsilano Beach (known as “Kits Beach” to locals) is one of the most popular places to soak up some sun or play beach volleyball. Escape the crowds in a kayak. You can paddle the shoreline in either direction. Head west for some close-up views of Vancouver’s prime waterfront homes. Paddle east to head under the bridges into protected False Creek – just watch carefully for boat traffic. During the summer, rent a kayak from Vancouver Water Adventures at the north end of the beach.

Jericho Beach

Located on the west side of the city, Jericho Beach is a great place for a casual paddle. Kayak past the sandy beaches of Spanish Banks and towards the quieter gravel shores of forested Pacific Spirit Park. With eagles circling above and herons fishing near shore, you’ll almost forget you’re still in the city. Ecomarine Paddlesports Centre has a kayak rental kiosk on the beach in the summer months.

Cates Park is also known as Whey-Ah-Wichen (which means ‘facing the wind‘) in the Tsleil-Waututh language. It’s a great place to learn about First Nations culture and heritage. After you admire the totem poles, rent a kayak at the paddling centre and kayak along the shoreline or over towards Deep Cove. If you want a richer cultural experience, book a tour with a Tsleil-Waututh guide through Takaya Tours .

Locals love to kayak at Deep Cove in North Vancouver. Beginners can explore the shoreline around the calm bay. If you are more adventurous, head across the inlet to Belcarra Regional Park. You can explore Jug Island or pull in at the Belcarra Picnic Area for a break. Deep Cove is also the launch point for overnight trips up Indian Arm, a beautiful ocean fjord. You can stay at primitive campsites in Say Nuth Khaw Yum Provincial Park, deep in the traditional territory of the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation. Get outfitted at Deep Cove Kayak Centre .

Bowen Island

Hop on the ferry for the short ride to Bowen Island. Once there, walk over to Bowen Island Sea Kayaking , grab a kayak and slip into the waters of Howe Sound. It’s a deep fjord surrounded by forested mountains and dotted with rocky islands. Explore the shoreline of Bowen Island or head further out to visit Gambier Island or Keats Island. Keep in mind that the town of Squamish at the head of Howe Sound roughly translates as “Mother of the Wind” in the local Skwxwu7mesh language. That means it can get really windy in this area. Beginners should stick close to shore or go with a guide.

If you’re looking for the calmest water around, head to Deer Lake in Burnaby. This little lake is hidden in the middle of the city, surrounded by forest and wetlands. With its small size and lack of motorboat traffic, Deer Lake is a great destination for family kayaking. Watch for endangered Western painted turtles in the shallows. Rent a kayak at the east end of the lake. They have canoes and pedal boats too.

Explore the quieter end of Burrard Inlet in Port Moody. Launch your kayak at Rocky Point Park, then explore the shoreline at the end of the inlet. If you’re lucky you may see seals with their pups. If you want to head further afield, paddle west to Belcarra Provincial Park, or even further to Deep Cove or Indian Arm. Rocky Point Kayak is located in the parking lot. They have rentals, lessons and tours.

Alouette Lake

Head out to Maple Ridge to paddle at Alouette Lake. Take a relaxed kayak tour along the shoreline to visit the main beaches at the southern end. If you’re more adventurous, head down the lake to the narrows where there is a backcountry campsite. You’ll be sharing the lake with motorized traffic and it can get pretty windy, so use caution. Rent a kayak at the day use area at the south end of the lake.

Alice Lake in Squamish is a popular family destination for picnics and swimming. It’s a great place for relaxed kayaking. The small lake is beginner friendly, but it is still big enough to offer enough little nooks and crannies for exploring around the shoreline. You can rent a kayak or paddleboard from the kiosk in the main day use area.

Blackfish Waters Orca Kayak Tour

Kayak with orcas in the Johnstone Strait , the BEST place in the world to observe killer whales as they feed on salmon off northern Vancouver Island. This is the only itinerary to spend 6 days in the heart of the areas where orcas roam, optimizing your chances of special encounters with these magnificent whales. Enjoy full-height canvas tents with sleeping cots in this unique base-camp to base-camp tour. 

If you long to kayak with orcas, you've come to the right place.  While some people are content to simply watch whales, sea kayakers yearn to experience them. Maximize your orca experience in the breathtaking scenery of Vancouver Island's inside passage. Here in Johnstone Strait, summer home of the northern resident orcas, paddle whale-rich waters and explore the the marine wonders of their ecosystem.

If weather permits, you'll stay at three different base camps on three different islands on the heart of the orca loop. Full-height canvas tents with sleeping cots await you at each of these wilderness base camps, so you can enjoy the orcas without the hassle of making and breaking camp or hauling a tent. Part of your tour will be spent in Blackfish Sound, home of orcas and a high concentration of humpback whales!

You will depart from Telegraph Cove in Port McNeill while our expert guides showcase the beauty and wildlife of the area. The whales may steal the show, but the Strait holds an entire ecosystem to explore. Peer at sea stars and anemones through crystal clear waters from your kayak, paddling glassy calm coastal inlets and channels in this sheltered wilderness. Learn about orcas from the guides' nature talks and the on-board library while friendly sea lions lounge on outcrops or take to the waves to get a closer look at you. Pass playful dolphins and curious porpoises, whose acrobatic water antics are mirrored by the aerial displays of eagles and sea birds . You will also observe First Nations pictographs, hike through forests filled with Old Growth Cedars, and learn about the aboriginal cultures that inhabited these lands. (If you would like to paddle the Broughton Archipelago, which is near Johnstone Strait but not a haven for orcas, head over to our Broughton tours. )

Green doesn’t mean lean! Camping with Sea Kayak Adventures means "getting away from it all," without "leaving it all behind." Our tours are fully-catered with gourmet meals prepared daily from scratch like our fresh salmon bake, and daily happy hour with wine and hors d’oeuvres. We provide all of the camping and kayaking gear, so you just need to bring your clothing! Sea Kayak Adventures proudly adheres to all Be Whale Wise regulations and is a supporting member of NIMMSA (North Island Marine Mammal Stewardship Association).

Arrive in Port McNeill, Orientation Meeting

Travel to Vancouver Island’s stunning northern coast to begin your orca kayak adventure. The town of Port McNeill, is a working waterfront fishing village just 30 minutes south of the Port Hardy airport. Many of our guests choose to stay at the Black Bear Lodge, where your guides will host the trip orientation meeting on the evening before your trip. You will have a chance to meet your fellow guests and acquire your drybags and wetsuit booties.

Telegraph Cove, Kayak to Base Camp

Early in the morning, we provide transport from the Haida Way Motor Inn south to the launch site in charming Telegraph Cove, where your guides will provide a kayaking safety and orientation lesson. We launch from Telegraph Cove, paddling immediately out into the roadless, thickly forested, sheltered Johnstone Strait, in the heart of orca territory and home of the world's only orca preserve. Weather permitting, you will kayak to our series of wilderness basecamps three different islands on this loop trip. Each of our base camps is equipped with pre-assembled, full-height canvas tents and sleeping cots. Enjoy happy hour including local wines and hors d’oeuvres while the guides prepare a special surprise for dinner. Recap the day's highlights over fresh baked dessert around a crackling campfire and gaze at the starlit sky or the glowing blue bioluminescence of the ocean before snuggling into your tent to sleep.

Sea Kayak the Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound

Awake to the smell of fresh brewed coffee and tea as the sun crests over rainforest boughs. Your guides will be wide awake and hard at work preparing a warm breakfast, but you can relax with a steaming mug of your favorite drink while wandering the beach for tidepools, reading a book, or watching a pod of passing orcas. You will kayak throughout orca territory in Johnstone Strait, and explore the adjacent channels and islands around Blackfish Sound where humpback whales may be spotted. Expect to kayak over four hours per day, broken up by lunch hour and floating rest breaks.

Robson Bight Orca Preserve, Sea Kayaking, Hiking

You will paddle to Robson Bight Orca Preserve as well as to First Nations pictograph sites on various days of your trip. Orcas can appear at any time on our tour. Killer whales can cover dozens of miles per day and often swim up, down, and around the strait hunting salmon or playing. You can also spot eagles, seals, porpoises or other marine mammals or seabirds at any time. Our guides use hydrophones when the orcas are in view so that you can thrill to the orcas vocalizing to each other underwater! Evenings and dinner will be spent relaxing in camp around a cozy campfire, toasting the day's adventures and listening to the guides spin tales and recount local legends. Orcas blowing offshore makes for a spectacular lullaby.

Telegraph Cove, Whale Museum and Return to Port McNeill

After breakfast and breaking camp, you will spend the day kayaking to our take-out at Telegraph Cove, stopping for lunch along the way and a visit to the Telegraph Cove whale museum. A taxi will return your group to Port McNeill in the afternoon, after unpacking the kayaks. We recommend that you overnight in Port McNeill and join us for a no-host farewell dinner with your group.

Note on Itinerary: We will do our best to adhere to the schedule listed above and visit our base camps on three separate islands. However, the itinerary may change due to reasons beyond our control such as wind, waves or inclement weather. Although there is a very good chance we'll see Orcas throughout the week, the frequency and proximity of sightings will ultimately be determined by the Orcas' travel patterns. Our guides know the best places to see these magnificent creatures.

A Trip of a Lifetime!

This trip is a MUST. I have not been on a ton of trips, but this was the first trip I planned solo. My goal was to get away from the busy life, slow down, and be in God's creation. The kayaking trip was good for the soul. I had hesitations going by myself, but I am glad I did. I met people from my trip all over the world, and we all got along incredibly well. Our guides were amazing - even it being the last trip of the year for them. They went above and beyond...we had lasagna one night on the rocks, just so we could watch the orca and humpback show going on in the bay. We saw wildlife every day as well as orca. I went to bed and woke up to the sounds of orca and humpback...However, I know this is not always the case that you will see as much wildlife as we did, but you never know until you go. I HIGHLY recommend this trip. When I get married, I want to bring my wife back here to do this or bring a bunch of friends. The food (you eat and drink like king and queens in the backcountry), the guides, the people, the wildlife, and the adventure - you cannot beat.

A wonderful wild adventure

I couldn't fault this trip. We saw orcas pretty much every day, humpbacks, bald eagles, dolphins, seals and sealions on multiple days, and loads of other birds. The camps had everything we needed, and were basic (in a good way, feeling very close to nature) but comfortable. The food was excellent, they accommodated our dietary requirements (vegan) expertly. The guides were extremely knowledgeable, friendly and entertaining. They went above and beyond to give us the best possible experience. I would heartily recommend this trip, and SKA generally.

Faq & more, when is the best time to see whales.

The northern resident pods of orca (killer whales) currently number over 220 individually identified whales in 17 separate pods. They are generally found in Johnstone Strait when salmon, their primary prey, come from the ocean to spawn in the rivers of mainland British Columbia. The whales arrive after about the first week in July, and stay through late September. Our tours are scheduled only during the times when the whales have historically populated the area. Transient killer whales are found in the area beyond this narrow summer window, but are fewer in number and offer infrequent sightings. Humpback whales return from their breeding grounds in Hawaii early summer, and remain through the autumn. Though once hunted to extinction from the area, humpbacks have returned to the area as a tremendous success story, and are almost more common than orcas!

Is there a danger while kayaking near killer whales?

There are no recorded attacks on humans in history from wild orcas. To our knowledge a killer whale has never bumped a kayak or shown any aggression toward kayakers. All whales are acutely aware of their surroundings, and can use echolocation to track objects in their waters. From our many years in Johnstone Strait and hundreds of close encounters with killer whales, we feel very safe being in their presence. Most of the orcas we encounter are strictly salmon-eaters.

Will I definitely get to see the orcas?

Orcas are wild animals free to roam at will, and while we have a very high success rate for seeing orcas in the Robson Bight region, we cannot guarantee a sighting. To increase your opportunities for seeing the orcas, or simply to enjoy even more whale watching, you might want to add an extra day to your vacation to go on a Stubb's Island Whale Watching trip that is operated by motor skiff. Their motorized boat allows them to cover more ground in search of orcas and humpbacks throughout the Johnstone Strait area.

How do I get to Port McNeill?

The easiest way to get to Port McNeill by air, is to fly through Vancouver International Airport (airport code YVR) to Port Hardy, BC (airport code YZT). From Vancouver International's South Terminal you can catch a flight on Pacific Coastal Airlines direct to Port Hardy. Once in Port Hardy, it's a 35-40 minute taxi ride to Port McNeill. If arriving from outside of Canada, be sure to give yourself 1.5-2 hours between your arriving flight at Vancouver International and your departing flight from the South Terminal to Port Hardy, as you will have to clear customs and take a 15 minute shuttle from the International Terminal to the South Terminal (there are signs to guide you). Port McNeill is also accessible by car, via a beautiful drive following BC Route 19 from Nanaimo to Port McNeill. Vancouver Island can be reached from the Canadian or U.S. mainlands by utilizing one of multiple ferry crossings from the Vancouver metro or greater Seattle areas. The BC Ferries and Washington State DOT Ferry websites are very helpful resources if you are planning to drive to Northern Vancouver Island. How do I get from Port Hardy to Port McNeill?

If you fly into Port Hardy, you will need to arrange a taxi for the 35-minute drive South to Port McNeill. You can expect to pay about $45-60 CAD for the one-way fare, however rates do vary. We recommend sharing the ride with other members of the tour if you meet one another on the plane (or are on the same flight when departing). Where do I stay before and after my tour?

We recommend the Black Bear Resort for accomodations as this is where we will meet the night before your schedualed activities. All hotels on northern Vancouver Island fill well in advance for summer, so wherever you choose to stay, we recommend making reservations early. Please note, hotel nights before and after the tour are not included in your tour cost. There are plenty of things to see and do in Port McNeill and Port Hardy if you choose to extend your stay. 

What if I don't get to see Orcas?

You can always extend your trip through our friends at Stubbs Island Whale Watching or Mackay Whale Watching tours. Both are experienced operators located on Northern Vancouver Island. Whale watching by boat will allow you to quickly move to areas where sightings are reported, increasing your changes of seeing whales.

Can I paddle a single kayak?

We have single kayaks available to reserve and use throughout the trip (for an additional cost of $100) for paddlers who have previous ocean paddling experience. If you would like to reserve a single kayak for your trip you will need to contact our Adventure Consultants to add this to your reservation and provide a summary of your ocean paddling experience.

How close can we get to Orcas?

For all of our British Columbia kayaking tours, we follow "Be Whale Wise" regulations for the protection of the whales. According to the regulations, viewers must stay 200 yards/meters or more away from Orcas. We are very privileged to have the opportunity to observe these incredible creatures from close vantage points. The survival of the Orca, depends on everyone's cooperation with the "Be Whale Wise" and other responsible whale watching regulations. Occasionally, because orcas are much faster than us while in a kayak, they approach us much closer than the above guidelines. That said, many of our closest encounters have been from land, as the whales often come within meters of the shoreline! Understanding the behavior and range of the Orcas helps to better-set your expectations for your Orca kayak tour. Feel free to explore www.BeWhaleWise.org to read more about these regulations.

Which trip is right for me? The 4-day or 6-day Orca kayaking trips?

The four-day trip utilizes one campsite for all four days. You have more time to relax and enjoy the beautiful wildlife and scenery. Families with teens, novice kayakers, or those who prefer a slower pace would be ideal for this tour. The campsite we use on the Vancouver Island side of Johnstone Strait, by exclusive permit, is close to Robson Bight. The base camp's shoreline is composed of sea-polished stones that lure an orca to rub its 6-ton body along the beach, or herd salmon into the curve of the shore. Orcas regularly pass by directly in front of camp. Paddlers can scramble down the rock outcropping and stand at water's edge to watch orcas cruise by just below their feet. The camp offers great orca viewing right off shore. We never just "wait around for orcas" on the base camp. We take daily day trips, paddling to different beaches for lunch, hike, observing wildlife. Each trip includes about 4 hours per day of kayaking: two hours paddling in morning, and another two hours paddling in the afternoon after lunch. Often there is a hike at the lunch stop, and the evenings are filled with campfires, games, or fishing. On the 6-day tour, you'll enjoy 2-3 different sites (including the aforementioned basecamp) that are located along the travel routes used by the orcas. Given this loop route and the length of the trip, you are likely to see more wilderness areas and a more diverse selection of marine life. For instance, the six-day tour includes a visit to an area that's frequented by humpback whales. You will also have a chance to explore First Nations pictograph areas, and the base of the Broughton Archipelago, while remaining firmly in whale waters.

Can you recommend a taxi company from Port Hardy to Port Mc Neill?

The taxi companies change regularly, but we recommend Waivin Flags Taxi, 1-250-230-7655 and Town Taxi 1-250-949-7877 on the North Island.

What kind of footwear should I bring on my BC tour?

We recommend that you bring (2) pairs of shoes on your BC trip. Packing light for your adventure in the Johnstone Straight is highly recommended and from our experience you really only need 2 good pairs of footwear for your tour. We will supply you with a pair of neoprene booties for the duration of your kayaking tour. In addition to those booties we recommend you bring:

□ One pair sturdy trail shoes, or running shoes, to use for hiking and around camp □ One pair sandals with ankle straps to wear while kayaking, on the beaches, walking around camp, etc. (Chaco, Keens or Crocs are preferred but there are many other brands that are suitable)

Will there be a portable charging station provided on the tour?

We do not carry a portable charging station for the group. You may opt to bring your own small portable charger to charge your phone, camera, headlamp, etc.

Man dies after kayaking incident in Deep Cove, North Vancouver

Police say the man was brought to shore but was in medical distress and died at the scene.

A man is dead following a kayaking incident in North Vancouver's Deep Cove neighbourhood on Saturday, according to police.

North Vancouver RCMP says it was alerted to a sudden death around 5:45 p.m. PT.

Const. Mansoor Sahak says police received reports that an hour earlier two kayakers fell into the water when their kayak flipped.

Nearby kayakers were able to rescue them and bring them to shore, he says.

However, Sahak says one man was in medical distress and died at the scene.

The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating the cause of death.

Meanwhile, a search continues for two kayakers who went missing in waters near Sidney, B.C., about 25 kilometres north of Victoria, on Saturday.

Mounties search for overdue kayakers on Vancouver Island, seek public’s help

Police, search and rescue crews, and the coast guard are on the lookout for a pair of overdue kayakers on Vancouver Island, and they have released photos in the hopes of getting the public’s assistance locating them.

The North Saanich RCMP say the two men were last known to be kayaking between D’arcy Island and Island View Beach in Central Saanich on Saturday afternoon around 2 p.m.

They have not been heard from since.

36-year-old Daniel MacAlpine and 26-year-old Nicholas West were travelling from the island to the beach in a teal blue fibreglass, two-person kayak.

West is approximately 6″5′ and 170 pounds.

Police are asking anyone with any information about the missing men to call the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP at 250-656-3931.

Search for missing kayakers off Vancouver Island expands into U.S.

Authorities on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border resumed search efforts Monday to find two men who went missing while kayaking off Vancouver Island over the weekend.

Mounties say Daniel MacAlpine, 36, and Nicholas West, 26, were travelling in a blue, two-person kayak from the small D'Arcy Island to Island View Beach Park, north of Victoria, at 2:15 p.m. Saturday.

When the men failed to arrive at their destination, a search was launched, leading to the discovery of their abandoned kayak approximately six kilometres away on Henry Island, Wash., on Sunday.

"As a result of that, Washington state authorities have been heavily engaged, as well, to try to find the two men on their end," B.C. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy told CTV News on Monday.

The RCMP say the main search effort is now concentrated farther south in Haro Strait near San Juan Island and Lopez Island, both in Washington state, while the RCMP's West Coast Marine Services unit would search the area of Coal Island, near Sidney, B.C.

"The search is continuing on this side of the border, as well," Grandy added. "But given that information and where the kayak was essentially recovered recently, a lot of it is being conducted on the United States side of the border."

The U.S. Coast Guard says it launched a helicopter from Port Angeles, Wash, on Sunday to search the area where the paddlers went missing until a Canadian search-and-rescue helicopter arrived to continue the search.

"Port Angeles conducted their search patterns with negative results," the U.S. authorities said in a statement to CTV News. The Canadian Coast Guard has not responded to a request for comment. This story will be updated if and when a response is received.

"At the time of this update, there have been no signs of both missing men," Mounties said in a statement.

MacAlpine is described as a white man standing approximately 5'10" tall and weighing 150 pounds. West is also  described as a white man standing approximately 6'5" tall and weighing 170 pounds.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts is urged to contact the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP at 250-656-3931.
