In the month of May, when I planned to travel to Kedarnath and Badrinath, my mind was still occupied with the stories of the flood disaster of 2013. But I was keen on a visit to the Jyortilinga shrine with my mother as being sacred Chardham for Hindus. After visiting Kedarnath, we started for our journey to Badrinath. Here is Guide to Visit Badrinath and Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip Travel Guide including important Places to visit on the way to Badrinath.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip : Day-4 Kedarnath-Guptkashi-Chamoli-Joshimath-Badrinath

After staying for a night at Kedarnath, the next day we rode back by helicopter in early morning. Our return journey ride was scheduled at 7 AM in the morning. The weather was clear and it was relieving sign for me as the weather could have disturbed at any time in Kedarnath.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip route

After reaching back to Phata, we started for Badrinath via Guptkashi. The distance between Kedarnath to Badrinath is 200 Kms  Via Guptkashi and it takes 10-12 hours to complete the journey. As we drove Badrinath to Kedarnath by road journey, we walked past small villages and towns and reached to Chopta. It is a well developed beautiful hill station and a superb trekking destination in Uttarakhand. It is surrounded by meadows and evergreen forest with spectacular views of mighty Himalayan ranges which attracts many trekkers.  It is famous for temples and it is a gateway to so many treks in the region like Chopta-Tungnath and many more. As we started early in the morning; took a break at Chopta for a hot breakfast.

As we crossed Chopta, the road became more serpentine with the dense forest surrounding it. The jacaranda flowers were in full bloom, the colorful village houses dotted along the road and the curvy road was giving me goosebumps during the ride. Chopta is one of the beautiful places of Uttarakhand and don’t miss to stop by it on Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip.

After crossing Chopta, we reached Chamoli-Gopeshwar. It was early evening when we reached to Joshimath – a holy shrine 45 Kms before Badrinath. The town of Badrinath remains snowbound for six months in a year and Lord Badrinarayan i.e Lord Vishnu was brought to the  Narsimha Temple at Joshimath by the head Priests with the holy ceremony. This way Joshimath is also known as the ‘winter abode’ of Lord Badrinath . So on the way to Badrinath, must include this beautiful temple during your Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip

We quickly visited the Narsimha Temple which is 1200 years old. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the deity of the temple is the 4 th incarnation of Lord Vishnu- Narsimha Avtar in the form of half Lion and half man. It is said that the trip to Badrinath is incomplete without visiting the Narsimha Temple.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip Joshimath town

As we crossed Joshimath, the road was in bad condition at some patches till Govindghat. It is base for a trek to Valley of Flowers which starts from Ghangharia. It is one of the holy places for Sikhs and we saw many Sikh devotees on the way. As you cross Govindghat, the road becomes curvier and it was almost cut through the rocks. I was delighted to see the mighty Alaknanda river flowing on one side and a serpentine road on the other; it was like a roller-coaster ride to Badrinath.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip

It was dark when we reached to Badrinath. After driving for more than 10 hours it was time for some rest!!

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip : Day-5: Badrinath

Badrinath town

Badrinath is located at 10,170 ft is the abode of Lord Vishnu and one of the most revered places among char Dham for Hindus. It is located on the banks of the Alaknanda river between Nar Narayan mountain range, with Neelkanth peak in the background.

In the morning, we proceeded for visiting the Badrinath Temple which is one of four important temples in Uttarakhand. The road that leads to the temple is full of shops selling religious offerings, CDs, winter wears, Photographs, etc. As we crossed it, we reached the bridge on the Alaknanda River which leads to the temple area. The temple dates back to a century ago when Adi Shankaracharya established math here (today’s Joshimath). The temple is also believed to be of Buddhist origin and later it was converted to a Hindu temple.

Badrinath temple visit

At first look, I was delighted with the colors of the temple which are conventionally bright that left me in awestruck. I loved the decoration of the temple and I was tempted to click so many pictures of it. It does all the justice for the long journey. I was lost in the charming aura of this temple.

Interesting facts about the Badrinath Temple:

  • As far no historical records have been found about Badrinath temple’s origin but some of the accounts state that a Buddhist shrine was present here before Adi Shankaracharya converted it into a Hindu shrine. Also, the architecture and the brightly painted façade of the Badrinath temple is similar to that of a Buddhist vihara (temple) which draws our attention to the fact.
  • The Badrinath Temple is among the four pilgrimages of Hindus. It is situated on the Alaknanda River at the NainaParvat, near TaptaKund, which is a hot water spring. The temple has three parts: The garbhgriha, Darshanmandap, and Sabhamandap. The Lord Badrinath is seated in the garbhgriha, the second part is also known as DarshanMandap where all devotees come for worshipping, and sabha mandap is the outer hall where devotees wait for doing darshan of their lord.
  • The high priest of Badrinath is from the clan of Adi Shankaracharya. He is called ‘Rawal’  is traditionally a Nambudiri Brahmin chosen from the South Indian state of Kerala. During his span as a priest, the Rawal cannot marry and has to be celibate. For them, even the touch of women is considered a sin.
  • Conch which is a favorite instrument of Lord Vishnu is not allowed to blow in the Badrinath temple. According to a Hindu legend, when sage Agasthya was slaying the demons of Kedarnath the two demons by the name of Vatapi and Atapi escaped. Atapi took refuge in the Mandakini river while Vatapi hid inside the conch to save his life. Since then it is believed if anybody tries to blow the conch, Vatapi will come out. Hence, it is prohibited to blow conch in this area. But according to science since Badrinath temple is covered in snow most of the time so blowing conch might create echo- a unique phenomenon which can create turbulence in the ecological environment, cause ice storms and endanger human life.
  • Adorned below the Badrinath temple, the Tapta Kund is the group of hot sulfur water springs snuggled below the temple. It is believed that these hot water springs possess medicinal properties and is home to the Agni God, the Hindu Lord of Fire. Before paying obeisance at Badrinath temple, the pilgrims take a holy dip in this kund for purifying themselves. The temperature of Tapta Kund remains as hot as of 55 °C (131 °F) at 17 °C  temperature all round the year.
  • The name of the Badrinath Temple originates from a known word Badri which is said a type of wild berry. A mythological story increases the faith of devotees. The story is when Lord Vishnu sat in penance in the mountains of Badrinath; then His Better half Goddess Laxmi changed herself into a berry tree to shade her husband from the harsh sun. That is why sages and pilgrims belief in meditating here for mental peace and enlightenment.Hence, Badrinath is also known as “Badri-Vishal”.

Badrinath Temple Timings:

The temple opens at 4 AM and closes at 1 PM noon; once again it opens at 3 PM and closes at 9 PM. If you want to avoid the queue, visit it at night. You can perform special Pooja also which you can book in advance.

Places to Visit in Badrinath

The idol of Lord Vishnu is sculpted in black stone and it is seated in meditating posture ‘Padmasana’ hosed in the gold canopy. As you walk around the main shrine area, you can see the idols of Ganesha, Garuda, Hanuman, and goddess Lakshmi.

Best Places to Visit in Badrinath:

As you walk out from the temple, just below the temple, there is ‘Tapt Kund’(hot water sulfur spring) –separate for both men and women. The water of the Kund is believed to have medicinal properties and pilgrims take bath before entering the temple.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip

After offering our prayers, we left for visiting the Mana Village – Last Indian Village. As Badrinath is a Holy place, there aren’t many places to see in Badrinath. Nearby Mana has located 3 km from Badrinath at an altitude of 3200 meters. It is the last village before Mana Pass and 24 Kms from the Border of India and Tibet. It requires mild trekking to reach the village and exploring a few points of interest.

Mana Village near Badrinath

I was just happy to walk around and knowing interesting stories of River Sarswati-Vasudhara Falls and Bheempul. There is one more ritual here to have Tea at Last Tea Shop in India. We spent some time here and started back to reach Badrinath. So if you are visiting Badrinath, don’t miss to visit this Last village from Badrinath.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip : Day-6 : Badrinath-Karnaprayag-Srinagar

It was a very sunny day with a clear blue sky when we started to leave Badrinath in the morning. During our stay in Badrinath, it was drizzling. It has happened so many times with me that during my stay at a particular place; rain plays hide n seek and the sky is not clear; and whenever I am about to leave that place, clouds get clear. But I am not complaining as I was happy with whatever nature was offering to me.

From Badrinath, the road again passes through Joshimath and Chamoli. As we crossed Chamoli, we passed through Nand Prayag- one of the Panch Prayag(five confluences). It lies at the confluence of the Alaknanda River and Mandakini River. The distance between Badrinath to Srinagar is 9-10 hours, we didn’t stop at the confluence.

kedarnath to badrinath trek route

After passing through numerous towns and small villages, we pit stopped at Karnaprayag. It lies in midst of Nandprayag and Rudraprayag. Also, it lies at the junction from where one could travel to Badrinath as well as Kedarnath. Bedecked on the confluence of river Alaknanda and Pindari River- it is one of the Panch Prayag (five confluences) of river Alaknanda.

The town of Alaknanda is also known as ‘The city of Karna of Mahabharat’.While on a visit to the Himalayas, swami Vivekananda also meditated here with his gurus. With the hills in the backdrop and pristine surroundings, it is truly delightful place.

kedarnath to badrinath trek route

After capturing a few clicks in camera and offering prayers we started towards Srinagar. As the distance between Badrinath and Rishikesh was approx 12-14 hours, we decided to take a break at Srinagar. If you don’t want to go for a tiresome hilly journey; take a break at either Rudraprayag or Srinagar. The city of Srinagar is famous for temple of Dharidevi- 19 km from Srinagar. The city’s other attraction is the Alaknanda Hydro Electric Power Project.

We reached Srinagar in the evening. After some rest, we started to walk on the main road. The town was full of chat vendors and had a lot of decent restaurants too. It is probably the last town before the hill starts to Badrinath and Kedarnath. The town looks very pretty at night with dotted houses on the hills.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip : Day-7: Srinagar-Rishikesh

Rishikesh white water rafting

It was the last day of our road trip and was saddening as the trip was coming to end. It took almost 4-5 hours to reach Rishikesh. As we started descending, the atmosphere started to change from cold to very hot. We were leaving behind the hills and started towards more plains.

Route of Kedarnath to Badrinath

We reached to Shivpuri by noon and stopped there for a while. There was the rhythmic sound of Ganges and endless stretch of pebbles over there. This was a therapeutic site and rendezvous with the Ganges. The river rafting starts from Shivpuri and people were arriving at the starting point of the rafting. I had already done river rafting in the Ganges, so just spent time by the Ganges.

By noon we reached to Rishikesh on a hot summer day and ended our week long road trip to Badrinath and Kedarnath. Earlier we decided to explore a bit Rishikesh too, but due to hot weather, we dropped the idea and started to catch a bus to Delhi.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip : Where to Stay in Badrinath:

The accommodation in Badrinath has so many Options, it ranges from guesthouses, ashrams to budget hotels. As they are pilgrim places; don’t expect luxurious amenities from them.

Food in Badrinath:

Hotel Saket – opposite to Badrinath temple (on the way to temple) is a very good option for the North Indian and South Indian dishes. We loved all the veg options here. Also, the town has numerous dhabas and decent restaurants which serve vegetarian food. It is a pilgrim place; you won’t get alcohol and Nonveg food here. At Srinagar, Hotel Shivika serves good food and very famous in the region.

Mobile Network:

I highly recommend carrying a BSNL SIM card if you are visiting Badrinath. Reliance Jio and Vodafone work but it gives occasional signaling.

Travel Tips for Badrinath:

  • Photography is prohibited inside the badrinath temple; don’t try to attempt it.
  • It is popular pilgrim place and one of the dham for Hindus; receives thousands of visitors daily as temple remains open for few months in summer.Be prepared to stand in queue. If you want to avoid it, visit the temple in night before closing of the temple.
  • Carry comfortably warm and heavy woollen clothes along with you as the season is always cold there, and at high altitude it is impossible to survive in lighter clothes.
  • As you are travelling in the hilly region; always start early and reach early. Avoid travelling in night.
  • Bargain well before buying woollens and other souvenirs.

This was all about my one-week road trip from Delhi to Kedarnath and Kedarnath to Badrinath. I tried to include everything in this post of  Badrinath Travel Guide. If you have any questions can let me know in the comments.

8. Passport & Visas/Identity Proofs : If foreigner, Validity for 6 months, should have blank pages, and should be kept with yourself all the time.

9. Water : If you are on a trekking or cycling holiday, water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles. This will be boiled or filtered. Additionally, you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a LifeStraw, Sawyer Filter) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single-use plastic bottles.

10. Altitude : This adventure involves going to a very high altitude. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatize successfully. We will send you the information in your mailbox about Acute Mountain Sickness and trekking in high altitudes. On this trip, we carry bottled oxygen for use in emergencies.

11. Guidance on Tipping : Tipping is the accepted way of saying thank you for good service. Normally the guide and any other trek staff are given their tips at the end of the trek and this is best done as a group. The main guide will make sure that the tip is appropriately distributed among all the staff members on the trek.

12. Spending/Emergency Money : Approximately Rs. 8000-10000/- (in Indian Currency)should be carried for miscellaneous expenses including porter and trek crew tips, drinks, soft drinks, etc. We recommend that you carry your travel money in the form of cash as the availability of ATM is less in these remote areas. This can also serve as your emergency spending money.

13. Travel Insurance : It is recommended to have travel insurance for these kinds of adventures. When taking out insurance please ensure the policy you choose covers you for the activities and altitude included in your itinerary. We will ask for the Travel Insurance Details over a mail. Indians can buy insurance from us while booking the trek.

I had the best time of my life at Sandakhphu Phalut trek arranged by Trekmunk. Literally I felt like I was in heaven and I was soo very happy. I will recommend everyone to opt for Trekmunk. I was a solo woman traveler and was a bit worried, but things went very smoothly and I enjoyed it a lot. I miss my fellow trekkers too. I am very satisfied with their arrangements.

I and my friends went to Markha Valley trek with Trekmunk and we all had a great time. Walking up and down the hill, coming across some beautiful sites was mesmerizing. Staying in tents was so much fun. And our guide had all the knowledge about the trek. Trekmunk is really good with its food and accommodation facilities. I highly recommend Trekmunk. Kudos to their Team.

I had an amazing trek with Trekmunk to Sandakphu November and December 2019. From the first moment of inquiry about the trek and all my questions were answered clearly and on time thanks to Dheeraj who managed to facilitate the trek quite well with his communication. Our guide Arpan was very experienced, calm, patient and very helpful to each trekker's needs in the group. He facilitated to find and hire a porter for me once I needed one although we were in the middle of the trail. He also arranged emergency transportation when I had to cut the trek and go back home for an urgent matter. I really enjoyed their service and I would like to repeat the same trek or try other treks with them again.

I chose (after a lot of research) Trekmunk for my first trek - The Hampta Pass and Chandratal Trek. And I am so really glad I did so. The trekker needs to only focus on the trek and the beautiful landscape around him/her. The rest of everything is taken care of by Trekmunk from day 1 till the end of the trek. Scrupulously managed logistics; no compromise on safety and security; experienced, intelligent and knowledgeable trek leaders; scrumptious meals; contingency and backup plans; etc. make Trekmunk an ideal choice to go trekking with. My trek was lead by Ashish Pathania, Prashant Reddy and Sanjay Thakur. The three are were thorough professionals. They were jolly, very helpful, experienced, knowledgeable, organized, and needless to say polite yet strict when needed. They played the most important roles in making sure our overall trekking experience was a wonderful one. Thank you Trekmunk for one of the most beautiful experiences I have had till date. Will see you guys soon.

Our 7 days trip to Meghalaya was a truly memorable experience. Thank you Trekmunk for arranging such an adventurous backpacking trip and a special thanks to Mohit Goswami our trip leader for giving us an experience of what true travelling is. From hitchhiking to traversing the unknown places to eating delicious Momo's to climbing 3000 steps, we did it all in those 7 days which came to end so quickly and none of us wanted to go back home. Such an experience where you just pick up your rucksacks and walk down the roads of a traveller could have been only possible because of Trekmunk!

Kedarnath to Badrinath Distance

About Kedarnath Dham, Uttarakhand

Kedarnath Dham, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, stands as one of the holiest and most revered pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Perched at an elevation of approximately 3,583 meters (11,755 feet), this sacred abode is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The journey to Kedarnath involves a challenging trek or a helicopter ride, both of which are rewarded by the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding peaks and the spiritual aura that envelops the region.

The ancient Kedarnath Temple , built in the 8th century, is a marvel of stone architecture, and its mystical ambiance resonates with the chants of devotees. The revered shrine, set against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and the Mandakini River, draws pilgrims seeking divine blessings and a profound connection with the divine in this ethereal Himalayan sanctuary.

About Badrinath Dham, Uttarakhand

Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, Badrinath Dham stands as a revered Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,133 meters (10,279 feet), this sacred abode is not only a testament to spiritual devotion but also a haven of natural beauty. The Badrinath Temple, a remarkable structure believed to date back to the 9th century, is an architectural marvel with its vibrant colors and intricate carvings. Pilgrims embark on a journey through the challenging terrain of the Himalayas to reach Badrinath, where they seek blessings from Lord Badri, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Surrounded by majestic peaks, the temple overlooks the Alaknanda River, creating a serene ambiance conducive to contemplation and religious fervor. The annual pilgrimage season, typically from May to November, sees devotees from all corners of the country converging to experience the divinity and serenity that define Badrinath Dham.

The journey from Kedarnath to Badrinath is a spiritual odyssey that takes pilgrims through the enchanting landscapes of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India. The distance between Kedarnath and Badrinath, two of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus, is approximately 220 kilometers (137 miles) by road. While the straight-line distance may seem relatively short, the mountainous terrain and the lack of a direct road connecting the two destinations make the journey challenging and time-consuming.

Pilgrims typically travel by road, passing through picturesque towns and villages like Guptkashi, Rudraprayag, and Joshimath, as they traverse the winding roads of the Himalayan region. The pilgrimage is not just a physical journey but a spiritual one, allowing devotees to immerse themselves in the divine aura of both Kedarnath and Badrinath, each nestled in its own unique and awe-inspiring natural setting. The sacred journey between these two revered dhams is a testament to the devotee’s determination, resilience, and unwavering faith.

How to reach Badrinath from Krdarnath

The journey from Kedarnath to Badrinath involves traversing the picturesque but challenging terrain of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India. While there isn’t a direct road connecting the two pilgrimage sites, there are several routes that pilgrims can take to reach Badrinath from Kedarnath:

  • Pilgrims can travel by road from Kedarnath to Badrinath, passing through towns like Gaurikund, Rudraprayag, and Joshimath. The journey involves navigating winding mountain roads and can take around 10-12 hours, depending on weather and road conditions.
  • Helicopter services are available for those seeking a quicker and more convenient mode of transportation. Helicopter services operate during the pilgrimage season and significantly reduce travel time. Pilgrims can catch a helicopter from Kedarnath to Phata and then transfer to another helicopter to reach Badrinath.
  • For the more adventurous and physically fit pilgrims, there is an option to trek from Kedarnath to Badrinath. This trek is part of the longer and more challenging “ Char Dham Yatra ” and involves crossing high-altitude mountain passes and dense forests. It’s essential to be well-prepared and physically fit for such a trek.
  • Another option is to take a combination of road and helicopter services. Pilgrims can travel by road to a point closer to Badrinath and then opt for a helicopter ride to reach the destination faster.

Pilgrims must check weather conditions, road status, and the availability of transportation services before embarking on the journey. The pilgrimage season, typically from May to November, sees an influx of devotees, and planning is advisable.

Additionally, the routes and transportation options may vary, so it’s recommended to stay informed and consult local authorities or tour operators for the most up-to-date information.

Kedarnath Trek – A Complete Guide

kedarnath to badrinath trek route

Table of Contents

Where is Kedarnath?

Kedarnath (3,553 metres, approximately) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It lies just below the base of the mighty Kedarnath peak (6,940 metres), and is the First Kedar to be visited in case you are staying true to the sequence of the Panch Kedar circuit. The other four being Madhmaheshwar , Tungnath , Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar .

Kedarnath Trek

I want to drive there myself. What is the motorable route?

Haridwar – Rishikesh – Devprayag – Srinagar – Rudraprayag – Augustmuni – Kund – Guptkashi – Sonprayag – Gaurikund

Distance from Haridwar to Gaurikund: 237 km

The motorable road ends at Gaurikund, but you’ll need to park your vehicle at Sonprayag. No private vehicles or even taxis from outside are allowed to go beyond Sonprayag . The only option is to board one of the shared taxis that specifically run from Sonprayag to Gaurikund. This more than sorts it out in case you are driving here yourself.

The road is more or less well-maintained except for a few patches that fall under the landslide zone. Road from Guptkashi to Sonprayag is patchy at best.

kedarnath to badrinath trek route

I want to opt for public transport.

  • Take a bus or shared taxi (Max) from Haridwar/Rishikesh to Sonprayag
  • Take a shared taxi (Max) from Sonprayag to Gaurikund

Buses, both local and of Uttarakhand State Transport, and shared taxis start plying from Haridwar/Rishikesh to Sonprayag as early as 4 am.

That being said, you should know that all the local buses take their own sweet time and multiple halts. All the buses and taxis will drop you at Sonprayag. After this, there is no other choice but to board another shared taxi to Gaurikund.

It should cost one person 1000-1200 bucks, Haridwar to Haridwar.

kedarnath to badrinath trek route

How long is the trek? How is the trek route like? Do I need a guide? Is there any Medical Aid available?

Gaurikund – Rambara Bridge – Jungle Chatti – Lancholi – Base Camp – Kedarnath (16 km)

It is a well laid out trek all the way through, paved and pretty straight forward.

From Gaurikund to Rambara Bridge (about 7 km) it is gradual yet easy ascent.

It is a steep, gradual ascent after crossing the bridge at Rambara, all the way to the base camp, where it flattens. The last 1 km or so is an easy walk to the temple.

You do not need a guide. Horses, Mules, Palanquins, and Porters are available at Gaurikund. It’s better to book them at Gaurikund itself; you will find many at several points on trek too but they will ask for a price higher than the altitude you will be standing at.

Medical and First Aid facilities are available at several places including Lancholi and Base Camp. There even is a small government hospital just 200 metres from the temple. And police check posts on several points.

kedarnath to badrinath trek route

Where to stay, eat, and how much will it cost?

There are many Lodges, Ashrams, Guest Houses, and Camps running from Gaurikund to Base Camp that provide cheap accommodation, both private and government run, including GMVN Lodges at Lancholi and Base Camp . The prices can vary from INR 500 per room to INR 2000 , depending on the rush of pilgrims. While the rates shoot up in May-June (peak season), they also go drastically low in the months of September-October (the best time to do this trek).

However, don’t expect anything in terms of luxury; expect basic rooms, warm quilts, simple but good food. There are plenty of tea/coffee shops on the way that also offer food. Expect to pay around INR 100 for a hearty meal for one person .

kedarnath to badrinath trek route

Is it possible to do Gaurikund-Kedarnath-Gaurikund in one day?

Yes. It depends on your fitness. We had set out at around 2 am and were back by 5 pm the same day, from Gaurikund to Kedarnath and back. Approximately 35 kilometres in 15 hours, which includes 4 hours of wait in the queue outside the temple (it was May). I’ve been told time and again this is a small feat. I am not proud of it. We were behind schedule and had to make up for it. I don’t like to test my speed against distance. Time to me is mostly irrelevant. I like to walk easy. Sit in silence. Maybe lie down. Take a gander at the grandeur. Look into the soul of these mountains. Feel a beat or two. Click a few pictures. Start again. Repeat again. Must we tie self-made accomplishments to places such as these?

This is the gist of it. If you have any further queries, feel free to leave a comment below or contact me through Facebook or Instagram . I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Stay safe, travel responsibly!

Hey Bro, Thanks for this description..!!

Thanks for reading, bro.

Hi Mohit..Beautifully written! To the point! I was planning this trek in September this year..Had a couple of doubts…If I start at say 5 in morning from Sonprayag..Take a shared taxi to Gaurikund. how long does the shared taxi take from Sonprayag to Gaurikund? If I start at 5 from Sonprayag, what time can I expect to start the trek from Gaurikund? I plan to reach the temple by say afternoon and stay overnight..Is there any place I can book on the spot to stay overnight and begin my descent the next day? I’ll be traveling solo! Thanks!

Hi Jatin. Thank you for reading! 🙂

  • The distance from Sonprayag to Gaurikund is approximately 4 km. It shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes to reach Gaurikund. However, this will be a shared taxi and it will not start until it can accommodate all the passengers it has the capacity to. So, I’d say add another few minutes. That being said, September is not the peak season; there shouldn’t be any hassles.

You can start the trek from Gaurikund the moment you reach there.

There are plenty of Lodges, Dharamshalas, and Guest Houses around the temple. Finding a room, on the spot, will be no trouble at all.

All the best! 🙂

Hi Mohit. This is an apt description for anyone who wants to go to Kedarnath. I’m planning to go in early October. Just had a couple of queries. Is it better to take a shared taxi from Rishikesh to Sonprayag? Rather than a bus which might halt at every place and as you said will take own sweet time to reach. Don’t mind paying a little extra for taxis if required. Also, apart from the registration for the yatra which can be done online is there any other registration or fitness certificate required before starting the trek? Thanks!

Hi, Rakesh. Thank you for reading. Shared taxis are relatively faster but almost always cramped. Buses are more breathable. Personally, I prefer buses. No fitness certificate is required.

  • Please refer to ‘Where to Stay, Eat, and how much will it cost’ section on the post. All the best.

Hello Mohit , For an ordinary people is easy trek or very diffcult?

Hi. The trek itself is not difficult. It might seem a little long and tiring. But should be manageable as long as you take it easy. All the best.

' src=

In 2000, an English mountaineer Martin Moran lead an expedition to Neelkanth, a nearby peak in Badrinath area to find a route and then successfully negotiated the Panpatia ice falls to exit through Kedarnath making it the first successful attempt completing Shipton's route.

Mythology about Panpatia Col Trek

It is said that during ancient times priests and sages could cover this trek from Badrinath to Kedarnath in just one day!

BADRINATH TO KEDARNATH TREK

John shipton.

I WAS FIRST INTRODUCED to the Garhwal Himalaya October last year in leading a trek over the Kuari pass (Kuari Khal), and then into the Valley of the Flowers. At 4000 m the pass provides a superb view of this section of the Himalaya, the very best in Frank Smythe's opinion. The trek inspired me to find out more about the story, to see if any parts had been or could be revisited. What had happened to that jungle valley, over the last 64 years, in this age of rapidly expanding population ? Were its forests still intact? What was the col like, and had anyone else repeated the descent? As I was booked to come and lead another trek in the Garhwal, I had the ideal opportunity at hand to answer these questions. On getting home I immediately read my father's book Nanda Devi (1934), and especially the chapter the Second Watershed Crossing which tells this story. It turned out to be one the most exciting pieces of pure adventure I have read. The crossing itself sounded terrifying. but I felt that I could at least explore the valley from below. My initial enquiries into the later history of area soon indicated that astonishingly little had changed since 1934, and a repeat of the route over the col at the head of the Satopanth glacier had not been attempted. It is a testament to my father's very special approach to mountains that, with the Himalaya crawling with climbers of ever increasing technical ability, not one in the 64 years since Nanda Devi has even looked at the possibilities of mountain reconnaissance in this area. Indeed as far as we know the Panpatia glacier and other possible routes to connect Badrinath and Kedarnath are still untouched.

At least this remained true until last year. My research had lead me to Harish Kapadia in Bombay, and I was bowled over by his reply to my letter. He had, just last year, made an attempt to emulate Shipton and Tilman and connect Badrinath and Kedarnath, but this time by the Panpatia glacier, believing this the more likely route of the legendary priest. They failed to get anywhere on this occasion, , but the coincidence was compounded by his note telling me of Martin Moran's expedition to complete the Second Watershed for the first time in 64 years. I immediately called Martin and was honoured to be asked to come along. I was extremely lucky in my timing. The Satopanth glacier is beyond the inner line, and closed to foreigners. Martin, had spent a lot of effort getting permission to cross the line at Mana. I would be able to accompany some of the best climbers of the day up to the col, including Martin himself and the indomitable Brede Arkless, as well as three accomplished Welsh cavers Pete Francis, John Harvey and Ben Lovett.

As a plantsman the trek offered more opportunities to observe Himalayan flora, in the late spring/early summer pre-monsoon season. My observations would be helped by my reading of Smythe's Valley of the Flowers. As well as my father, here was another new found hero for me. Smythe, must still be fairly unusual in having been a keen plantsman, making botanical observations, whilst at the same time being engaged in very serious climbing. His Valley of the Flowers describes an attempt on Nilkanth, as well as a list of species collected in 1937. It would be interesting to compare notes, on the botany at least. To Martin's horror I also proposed to take Polunin's Himalayan Flora over the col. The weight represented two days food. This is still the only serious field guide to Himalayan flora, difficult to find in the UK, it is available at all the small bookshops on the Janpath in Delhi.

Four days from Delhi our bus left us to camp outside the great pilgrim centre of Badrinath. At over 3000 m, Badrinath is above the tree line and set in alpine meadows surrounded by great peaks all having mythological significance, the most prominent being the Matterhorn like Nilkanth an embodiment of Shiva whose presence here has been a bone of contention with the devotees of Vishnu to which Badrinath is dedicated. In flower at our first campsite by the road to Mana, were the low growing purple flowered Iris kemaonensis, and lots of the Thyme, Thymus linearis.

Early next morning we were blessed by the Rawal (High Priest) of Badrinath, who had told us of the possibility of a long forgotten tunnel under the mountains. Picking up our army of porters we trailed through the checkpoint in the pretty Garhwali village of Mana, and set off west towards the Satopanth glacier. The alpine meadows at this point had only recently been covered with snow, but already the plants were recovering and things beginning to flower. After moving away from our Irises and thyme, we soon started coming across the tiny brilliant blue flower of the annual Gentian, Gentiana argentea. We next crossed the Alaknanda by a huge snow bridge. Almost immediately, where the snow had melted, we started finding primula foliage, and emerging onto a beautiful area of flat ground which we made our next campsite at 3500 m, found this and the ground beyond full of Primula denticulata. Above our campsite, in the damper grass, as a bulb fanatic I was very excited to find masses of Gagea elegans, both in flower, and coming into seed. I am sure this is the Gagea Smythe mentions hoiking out with his ice axe, and not G.lutea he records it as.

Higher up was masses of the old Himalayan favourite, Bergenia stacheyi, which perks up immediately the snow melts from it, and very soon comes into flower attracting butterflies, which make a wonderful sight in a background of snow. The last time I had seen B.stacheyi was in Pete Francis' garden in Llanelli just before we came away. Almost the last plant encountered was a jungle of the dwarf willow Salix karelini, heavily impeding our progress along the top of the very steep lateral moraine. In the next three days we climbed to the head of the Satopanth glacier, as we climbed the areas of ground not covered with snow disappeared, but in the fine weather we had butterflies fluttering across the snow, searching for the odd patch becoming uncovered where a primula could spring up.

The col at the end of the glacier, a great jagged icefall, flanked by the giant buttresses of Chaukhamba, and the unclimbed peaks to the south looked such an obvious goal in the clear blue skies we were getting, that it seemed all the more incredible that no one else had been lured over it since 1934. It proved to be as technically difficult as my father's description, so with regret Peter who was having problems with the altitude, and I turned back with Naveen and Hera, two of our porters, while the climbers hopefully made the difficult ascent and the even more daunting 2500 m descent on the other side. We intended to go back down the glacier and make the long journey by road to Kalimath in order to make a supporting trek to Kedarnath on the other side of the col. By the time we reached Mana two days later we had been on the glacier a week. The snow having receded significantly, the small pink flowers of the Primula relative Androsace sarmentosa had become a common sight on the moist banks.

Our journey round to Kalimath was much quicker than I had imagined. Bus travel in India can be an uncomfortable and agonisingly slow business. However in this area, fleets of Tata jeeps are available for hire, driver and all for, to us Europeans at least, amazingly low prices. Via the delightful provincial capital of Gopeshwar we were dropped off in Kalimath after a breathtaking ride, along the narrow pilgrims' Badrinath to Kedarnath road. This took us through subtropical forest, then up 2000 m into temperate forest and over a pass with a stunning view of the Himalaya, then down into the sub-tropics again in the Mandakini valley.

Kalimath was significant to this trip as it is where Shipton and Tilman emerged into civilisation after their struggles in the lost valley. Having discovered the mystery of the watershed they did not need to complete the route to Kedarnath as we now proposed to do. Kalimath proved to be a delightful place, surrounded by rich sub-tropical forest on the banks of the rushing Kali ganga , it is a small village of a few houses clustered around an ancient temple to Kali, the fearsome manifestation of the mother goddess as destroyer of demons. The valley is of great significance to her since 1000 m directly above us was the lonely temple of Kalisila where she was born. This, our first objective, we reached by a 4 hour climb up an ancient stone path through the lovely Garhwali village of Byorki, where boys played cricket on a near vertical pitch.

For the first part of our trek we followed the sharp Chorpagala ridge. This leads up eventually to the great Chaukhamba to Kedarnath Peak range, and is directly above the valley in which my father and Tilman toiled in 1934. Starting in thick mosquito infested forest, it climbs above the tree line to the steep pass called Douara Khal from where we got our perfect panoramic views of the other side of the col and the whole route down the ice falls into the head of the Ghandarpongi river and the forest below.

The temple at Kalishila is positioned right at the end of the ridge, with the holy spot itself reached by a hair raising scramble onto a rocky eyrie positioned above the final plunge into the valleys below. At the temple, we found a very friendly resident priest and companion yogi, as well as a playful puppy called Kouroupoulou, who let us camp for the night. It soon became apparent that water was going to be a serious problem. The steepness of the ridge and the nature of the rock meant a complete lack of running water on the ridge. The temple, although hours from the nearest water, had it pumped up from below. Presumably in earlier times it was carried up by devotees. However this meant that we had at least a day's hard trekking without water before we could at least get beyond the tree line and onto snow as a water supply. Luckily the next morning some shepherds were walking the ridge, and being well versed in this problem knew the points where a quick descent could be made to get water. The shepherds are the key to the area, being responsible for the forest paths, as they take their sheep and goats up to the pastures above the tree line in the summer, as the snows melt. Over time they have made clearings in the forest on the lower slopes, which have become, often named, wayside pastures. Jabri Kharak is one such which my father could see from the col, and which was partly responsible for giving the lost valley its impression of paradisical ease.

The path along the ridge is still quite a struggle, entailing a lot of scrambling up and down through thick forest dominated by various species of oak and Rhododendron. The latter had mostly just finished flowering. Scattered in the undergrowth of relative clearings were the wild strawberry, Fragaria nubicola, the fruit a welcome source of moisture, and that hardy member of the ginger family the purple flowered Roscoea purpurea. Towards the end of the day as we approached the shepherds' flocks, and near one of the grazed clearings, we started finding masses of Anemone rivularis, and its companion the blue Anemone obtusiloba. Then, in shade, the Trillium like Trillidium govanianum and the pink flowered Smilacina purpurea. Despite my aversion to sheep and goats, on account of the damage they do to the flora in many parts of the world, it is quite obvious that in this case many of these herbaceous plants are positively encouraged by the grazing, and in the case of the Anemone indicative of a grazed area. We camped with the shepherds, having to make a laborious half hour trek down to find water.

It was a relief the next day to start emerging above the tree line. At this 3000 m level, the Rhodendron was still in flower, interspersed with Clematis montana. Underneath we found the Solomon's Seal Polygonatum cirrhifolium, and soon after we started coming across Anemone tetrasepala and then the Himalayan version of Caltha palustris. Although this is classed as the same species as our Kingcup, its habitat is dramatically different. Whereas ours enjoys densely shaded marshland, this Himalayan variety thrives on high open slopes, admittedly on the damper areas, covered in thick snow in winter. As we climbed up the ridge the forest abruptly gave way to alpine meadow covered with Anemone and Caltha, and the tiny yellow Celandine like flowers of Oxygraphis polypetala.

By midday we reached the snow covered, steep slopes of the pass Douara Khal about 4000 m, and had got our great views towards Chaukhamba, the col itself, and to the right Nilkanth in the distance, and the peaks that must overlook the untravelled Panpatia glacier. From here the descent from these mountains looked like fine mountain trekking, as opposed to the terrifying looking icefalls from the col. Exploration of this area would be a wonderful project. Below was the Markanda ganga, and opposite the slopes of the hill hiding the Madhyamaheshwar temple, that intriguingly overlooks the valley from the east. We were lucky with our timing. Just after we had taken our fill of the view, wondering what had happened to the others, thunderstorms and snow showers with icy winds rolled in from the west, and we had to take shelter under a rock. As the weather eased we climbed 300 m further up the ridge before skirting round the peak of Tholi to get into the upper reaches of the Mandani ganga. This is the route the shepherds take to get to the pastures around the deserted Kali temple of Mandani, below the great peak of the same name. We were early in the season however, and on the western slopes of Tholi, we had to cross tricky snow filles gulleys, and on emerging round the corner to the north, found the path buried under snow slopes. By this time thick snowfall had reduced visibility dramatically, and the compass had to be brought out to negotiate a near white out. On losing altitude I made out, several hundred metres below, a flat area with a stream, the first water since Kalimath, which we headed for as a camp.

The next morning was glorious. The great peaks, including Mandani Parvat stood at the head of the valley. Our goal for the day on the other side of the 1500 m plunge into the uninhabited jungle of the Mandani ganga, was the inviting slopes of the ridge opposite Simtoli dhar. After drying out from the day before, we had a delightful alpine walk in the morning to the head of the valley, keeping our 3500 m height. The slopes were covered with flowers. The bright blue Corydalis kashmeriana was flowering everywhere, and in amongst thick tufts of grass was the spiderwort Lloydia longiscapa, the relative of our Snowdon Lily. Smythe only records this (L.serotina), and not L.longiscapa, which is tinged with brown at the base of the flower. Further along together with the Oxygraphis and Caltha, the meadows were full of Trollius acaulis the Himalayan version of the Globe flower. In damper sites we passed the small pink flowered Primula P.involucrata to go with the ubiquitous P. denticulata, and P. macrophylla. In thick grass I found one specimen of a Fritillary, probably F. roylei. Unfortunately the flower came away in my hand in my enthusiasm to examine it, and I hope I made amends by offering this to the Goddess Kali at her temple. All this wealth of flora had me straggling behind the others.

The pastures at the head of the Mandani ganga valley were positively Elysian in the clear blue skies, directly under the glistening giant mountains. The snows were only just gone, and we were probably the first people this year to enter them as the shepherds were weeks behind, and no one else comes here. As we came down Hera saw a bear lumbering for cover. In the middle of these meadows is the deserted temple to Kali. It is beautifully built of dressed stone and may be very old. Whether a priest or rishi ever stayed here we don't know, but certainly it was cared for by the shepherds who leave offerings. We left a message for Martin and the others who were scheduled to pass here if successful in the col crossing.

The path from this idyllic spot, seemed from the map to be straightforward, keeping roughly to a 3500 m contour around the ridge until crossing it at the point opposite our camp that morning. We followed the obvious sheep track behind the temple, passing a wonderful stand of the purple flowered legume Themopsis barbata. After a few minutes the path disappeared and we found ourselves having to negotiate a series of precipitous gorges, having to climb or drop several hundred metres on every little ridge. Progress became very slow. If not negotiating steep snow slopes or banks, we were struggling through brambles or thickets of rhododendron. As usual the weather went bad in the afternoon. After several hours we thought we were in striking distance of a grassy ridge that turned the corner. However we were stopped by one more impossible gorge. We had to climb an indeterminate way up the mountain or find a way somewhere near the bottom. Here were shades of Shipton and Tilman in the lost valley. Either prospect was unappealing, but we tried going down first, finally crossing the gorge below the tree line. We tried forcing a way through steep thick forest, only to find more impossible gorges covered in brambles and shrubs. We were forced to cut our losses and camp on a small flat area, a long way from the pleasing slopes of Simtoli dhar.

The next day our only choice was up the gorge. In fact our impasse was easily solved. we had a steep climb for several hundred metres, passing stands of the large yellow flowered Primula stuartii. This took us in a couple of hours, onto the shoulder we had aspired to yesterday, from where we could look west to the slopes of Simtoli dhar we had seen the day before. The side of the ridge was still far from easy however, and we had several gruelling gorges to cross. Eventually we struck the sheep trail. This must have climbed from the temple, but had been made invisible by snow. By early afternoon we were at 4000 m on top of the ridge, looking down into the next valley, and the headwaters of the Kali ganga. A steep descent brought us to a snow bridge across the river. In this valley the shepherds had already arrived with their sheep and goats from the villages further down the Kali ganga. Entertaining the shepherds with tea and namkeen we confirmed the untracked route of the final stage of the trek, over the Bisoli ridge to Kedarnath.

In the usual fine morning weather the following day, we had a pleasant climb again up a steep gorge to 4000 m and the top of this final ridge. We had a rude shock at the top. We had imagined gentle slopes leading to the fleshpots of Kedarnath. Instead we were faced with an impossible looking snow gorge plunging to the valley 1500 m below at the bottom of which was the pilgrim road to Kedarnath. This is the 14 km of footpath that every Hindu aspires to walk, ride or even be carried in a basket, to reach the Shiva temple at the foot of the mighty Kedarnath peak. We could see the endless line of pilgrims going up and down and hear the drone of hundreds of voices, but could see no way down. We were just resigning ourselves to making tricky and laborious investigations, when men started appearing from below. They proved to be about a dozen Nepalis engaged in collecting hay from the empty valley we had just come from, carrying it in 60 kg bundles to the top of the ridge, then down to a point where they could hurl it down 1000 m to forage merchants below, who then supplied the mule owners carrying the pilgrims up to Kedarnath. So good was business that they could not be persuaded to show us a way down and out of the gorge, as time was pressing them to fulfil demand. The situation was starting to resemble a bizarre scene in a science fiction novel. In the event we had to gingerly negotiate our way down and out of the gorge, a nerve racking business Below us lay Kedarnath at the head of the Mandakini valley, and further west vistas of more great peaks.

We had a fine walk down , and entered Kedarnath itself in time for lunch. In the town was a teeming throng of people surging up to the temple itself, a more spacious building than Vishnu's at Badrinath. Just behind the temple we were able to pitch our tents, and I was just taking a first stroll around the temple when there, sitting in a food stall, were all the other members of the team. Extraordinarily they had arrived here just an hour after us, having successfully crossed the col, making the arduous trek out of the lost valley. Badrinath and Kedarnath were finally connected for the first time since the legendary priest, and Shipton and Tilman's diversionary second watershed finally resolved.

A trek to the Satopanth glacier and from Kalimath, Mandani temples to Kedarnath, Garhwal in May-June 1998. Author is son of the legendary mountaineer Eric Shipton.

kedarnath to badrinath trek route

The Kedarnath trek starts from the town of Gaurikund, which is well connected by road. The trek is around 16 km long. It will take 8 to 10 hours to finish if you are physically fit. The route is well-marked and properly maintained. There are several shops and tea stalls on the way where you can rest and replenish.

The trek is divided into three sections. The first section is from Gaurikund to Rambara, which is a gradual ascent through the forest. The second section is from Rambara to Garud Chatti, which is a steep climb and takes you through some beautiful waterfalls and gorges. The third section is from Garud Chatti to Kedarnath, which is a gradual ascent with several switchbacks.

The trail is lovely and has several little streams and waterfalls as well as mountain vistas.

Kedarnath trek

If you can’t trek to Kedarnath, then horses and mules are the best and cheapest options for you. One way will cost you between 2000 and 3,000. The prices are fixed by the government. Generally, a helicopter costs the same, but you can’t enjoy the scenic beauty of a trek by helicopter.

kedarnath to badrinath trek route

Palki and Pitthus are very common in Kedarnath. For those people who can ride a horse, palki is best. There are four people carrying Palki, so it costs a little more than a horse. Palkis are very comfortable for older people. In Palki, you can enjoy the trek’s scenic beauty, which is missing from a helicopter. Plaki takes around 10 hours to reach Kedarnath from Gaurikund.

Pitthus are best for kids, as they can’t ride horses, and palki are too costly. So pitthu is economical because it is carried by a single person.

Phata to kedarnath Helicopter

One of the greatest methods to go to Kedarnath is via helicopter. It works best for people with time constraints. Typically, a round-trip helicopter ride costs between 5,000 and 6,000 rupees. To prevent guests from having to wait in line for dharsan at the Kedarnath shrine, Helicopter services  offer VIP dharsan.

The availability of helicopter services is based on the weather that day. The primary disadvantage of these services is that you can’t take advantage of the Kedarnath trek’s breathtaking natural scenery.

Badrinath Trek is holy site to the famous Badrinath temple is a well celebrated trek route among Hindu devotees.  It is one of the prominent ‘Char Dhampilgrime’ sites with thousands of devotees flocking its gates every year. It is also one of the hundred and eight ‘DivyaDesams’ dedicated to lord Vishnu. The Town of Badrinath lies in the banks of Alaknanda river of chamoli district, Uttarakhand and can be accessed via Joshimath.

The temple is mentioned in various Hindu texts, including the Mahabharata. Badrinath appears in the Mahabharata as a stop on the road to salvation. It is believed that anyone seeking salvation who visits the temple will be blessed by Lord Badri. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu sat here for meditation, unaware of his surroundings, he was protected by Devi Laxmi in the form of the Badri tree. Impressed by Devi Laxmi’s devotion, she was renamed Badri Vishal, and the location became known as Badrika Ashram. Lord Vishnu was later referred to as Badrinath.

  • Trail leading to Badrinath from Joshimath is filled with devotees and their chants
  • Alluring vistas of the nearby places makes the overall experience worth every challenge

Some of the trek highlights of badrinath trek.

Even before the trek begins, trekkers are treated to breathtaking views of Rishikesh, Devprayag, and Rudrapryag. Beautiful temples every few kilometers clearly indicate that trekkers have arrived in the Land of Gods, ‘Uttarakhand.’

The trek officially commences from Joshimath, and within a short amount of time trekkers can reach the holy site of Badrinath Temple. The final reach is enough to overwhelm devotees with the chants of “Jai Badrinath”. Best Time to Visit  Badrinath Trek

The best time to visit the Badrinath temple is during the summer months of May and June. The mild temperatures of these months are ideal for gatherings with family and friends. During the day, temperatures typically range from 12 to 16 degrees Celsius, with significantly colder nights.

Due to the unfavorable weather and precipitation, this trek is best done before and after the monsoon season.

1)Is it safe?

2)Difficulty level

3)Weather conditions

4)Things to carry

5)Connectivity and transaction

6) How to reach

7) Short Itinerary

Is it safe?

Set amidst the high altitude ranges, concerns regarding Badrinath Trek safety are undeniably very valid questions. Yes the trek to Badrinath is indeed very safe and reliable, new trails and much clearer safety protocols are sure to ease anyone’s concerns.

Difficulty level in Badrinath Trek

Because the top is relatively high in elevation for any beginner level trekkers we strongly recommend a reasonable level of physical fitness. We advise trekkers to physically and mentally prepare themselves prior to this trek.

Any medical assistance that is required will be provided at any point of the journey; however, trekkers must consult their professional care before beginning any trek. We also strongly advise trekkers to learn about altitude sickness and to notify our teams as soon as any symptoms appear.

Weather conditions

Weather conditions depend on the time of the year trekkers are travelling. In the months leading up to and following the monsoon season, the daytime temperatures are moderate, but the nighttime temperatures are significantly lower. Monsoons receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

Things to carry in Badrinath Trek

1) Because nights at elevations tend to be considerably colder, we suggest having well-graded, warm and comfortable clothing along with good quality shoes.

2) Despite the fact that we handle medical crises, we urge individuals to keep their emergency kits at hand in any case of personal underlying illnesses.

3) Since the journey provides you with a picturesque view of many peaks, don’t forget to bring your camera along with extra batteries.

4) Our staff will consult with fellow trekkers about their luggage and, if lacking, will assist trekkers in obtaining any necessary equipment. Only the relevant luggage should be brought, as a result.

Other trekking Essentials-

Connectivity and Transactions

1) Because connectivity along the route is unpredictable, we urge people to do all of their work ahead of time.

2) Last ATM transactions available will be at Gaurikund But we recommend travelers to collect cash beforehand or while in Rishikesh as ATMs available at other places might not dispense cash at times.

Kedarnath – How to plan a trip [Complete Travel Guide]

Shefali Joshi

Kedarnath is a divine Hindu settlement situated in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It is one of the Char Dhams located in the Himalayas, and is situated at an astounding height of 3584 meters above sea level near the head of Mandakini River.

The Kedarnath temple lies amidst the majestic snow-capped Garhwal Himalayan ranges and is thronged by thousands of tourists and pilgrims each year. Also, the Kedarnath trek is stunningly beautiful and quite eclectic, even in the trekking circuit.

Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath Closed for Winters

Famous for the ancient shrine devoted to Lord Shiva, it offers a calm atmosphere with a beautifully painted backdrop thanks to the rhododendron woods, snow-covered mountains, and splendid sights of nature. An amalgamation of devoutness and adventure is what makes it incomparable. A MUST VISIT for one and all.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Kedarnath

Kedarnath literally means the Lord of the field, and it is so called because the “crop of liberation” grows here. While it is not certain who constructed the temple or when! One of the earliest references of Kedarnath is in the 7th or 8th century. It is also believed that Adi Shankara died near the sanctuary.

History & Mythology

It is believed that post the battle of Kurukshetra, Pandavas went on a journey to Banaras in order to repent killing their own and seek blessings from the Lord. But, Shivji wanted to avoid meeting with the brothers, and thus, took solace in Guptakashi.

However, Pandavas were relinquishing in their search for the Lord and when they found him, Shivji decided to take the form of buffalo so that they couldn’t recognize him. Now, when Shivji saw the Pandavas approaching closer, he wanted to hide even further.

Thus, He took the decision to also become invisible by way of going underground. However, brother Bhīma tried hard to stop him from leaving by holding on to the legs and tail of the bull. Unfortunately, the Lord dived and evaporated at that place leaving behind his hump which is now worshipped at Kedarnath Temple.

It is however believed that through cosmic energy, the Pandavas were exempted from their sins and Shivji informed that from then onwards He would be present in Jyotirlinga form at Kedarnath.

Located in the Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath is the most remote of all Chota Char Dham sites. Situated near the Chorabari Glacier – the source of the Mandakini river, Kedarnath is flanked by snow-capped peaks – most prominently the Kedarnath mountain (6,940 mts) and the Kedar Dome (6,831 mts). Located at a distance of 223 KM from Rishikesh, the town is built on a barren stretch of land on the shored of the river.

The town unfortunately suffered extensive destruction during 2013 due to flash floods caused by torrential rains in Uttarakhand. The temple magnificently survived the harsh calamities!

In line with the Himalayan weather, Kedarnath experiences cool summers while the winters are extremely difficult and harsh. Summer is ideal for all sight-seeing, temple visits and experiencing nearby attractions as well. The average temperature is around 17 degrees in the summer.

Monsoon months are difficult and the area has suffered extreme rainfall many times, particularly in 2013. Monsoon weather is around 12 degrees. Winters are cold, complex and inhabitable. The palki of Lord Kedarnath is transferred to its winter abode near Guptakashi – Ukhimath from November to April. Weather in this season is always in the negative!

Best time to visit Kedarnath

Right at the beginning of the season in April till the onset of monsoons and post-monsoon till close of the season. Kedarnath has a cold climate for most part of the year and the best months to travel are May, June, September, October.

Camping at Kedarkantha Trek

How to get there

Kedarnath is well connected with most of the important towns of Uttarakhand. The nearest road head to Kedarnath is about 18 KMs later, Gaurikund.

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is the closest airport, at a distance of 238 KMs. The airport is well connected to Delhi with daily flights. Taxis are easily available from the airport to Gaurikund.

The nearest railway station to Kedarnath is Rishikesh, at a distance of 216 KMs before Kedarnath on NH58. Further, Gaurikund is well connected by motorable roads with Rishikesh. Taxis and buses are easily available to reach Gaurikund.

Prior to reaching Kedarnath, the last motorable point is Gaurikund. From there on out, you’ll be trekking for 16-odd-km. Gaurikund is connected with major destinations in North India. Buses and shared cabs are available from Haridwar, Rishikesh & Rudraprayag to Sonprayag, the last point until which private vehicles are allowed.

Buses to Rishikesh and Shrinagar are available from ISBT, Kashmiri Gate. From Sonprayag, there is a shared cab facility offered by the government, where the cab will drop you in Gaurikund for a fee.

Helicopter Options

You may even get a helicopter ride if you’re not into trekking (although I strongly recommend the trek!). The services are available from different helipads such as Guptkashi, Sersi, Phata etc.

What to do in Kedarnath

Given that Kedarnath is a religious destination, clearly the centermost attraction are places with mythological connotations.

Kedarnath Temple

Enveloped in the mighty Garhwal Himalayas, the Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath Temple is among the 275 temples of Paadal Petra Sthalams (the most powerful Shiva temples in the world) and is also the most important among the Panch Kedars.

With fresh air synonymous with the hills and stunning views that you have to earn – you will lose all sense of time here! For thousands of year, this place has been worshipped and the energy of the region is that of positivity, hope and beliefs for the future.

Inside the temple, you’ll be greeted with a small hall with images of Parvati as well as the Pandavas. The hall is decorated with statues of Krishna, Pandavas, Draupadi, Virbhadra and many other deities! There is a conical rock inside the temple which is worshipped as the Sadashiva (forever Shiv).

Made from grey stones which are interlocked with the use of iron clamps – the temple is truly striking in the backdrop of Himalayas.

Gandhi Sarovar

Gandhi Sarovar is a small crystal clear lake, also known as Chorabari Tal. This is so because it is situated on the mouth of Chorabari Bamak glacier. Gandhi Sarovar lies on the foot of Kedarnath and Kirthi Stambh peak at an astounding altitude of 3,900mts above sea level. The lake comes after completed further 4 KMs trek from Kedarnath Temple.

Kalimath is a religious place located on the banks of Saraswati river. Located at a height of 1800 mts, Kalimath is one of the 108 Shakti Peeths in India. Kalimath lies on lap of nature offering salubrious and divine environment. Goddess Kali Temple is located in Kalimath. Legends believe that after killing Raktbeej, Kali Goddess went underneath the ground at this place!

Bhairav Temple

Bhairavnath Temple or Bhairon Baba Mandir is situated south of the Kedarnath temple on the eastern hill of the lofty Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to Bhairav – the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with destruction and devastation. The temple offers some stunning views of the Himalayas and it is a beautiful portion of your journey to Kedarnath!

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

Gaurikund Temple

Gaurikund temple is a temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. According to myths and legends, this is the place where Goddess Parvati did penance involving ascetic and yoga practices to win over Shiva’s heart. It is believed that Lord Shiva admitted his love for the Goddess here and they then married at Triyuginarayan temple.

Shankaracharya Samadhi

Adi Shankaracharya was a philosopher, credited with unifying and establishing the main thoughts in Hinduism. At the age 32, he decided to attain moksha at Kedarnath and merged under with the land near the Kedarnath Temple. The samadhi is situated right behind the temple.

What to do around Kedarnath

There is so much to explore around the Kedarnath Temple. So, remember to keep some time at hand to truly immerse yourself into the experience!

Vasuki Tal Lake

Vasuki Tal is a high glacial lake situated at an impressive altitude of 14,200 feet above sea level near Kedarnath Dham. One can spot Brahma Kamal and other Himalayan flowers blooming around the placid lake, making for some spectacular views.

Ideally, I would suggest you complete the route in the day time itself, and spend the night at Kedarnath! The trek distance from Kedarnath temple is 8 KMs, initial 3-4 KMs is easy before the ascend begins. The icy Vasuki Tal is just 900 meters downhill from Vasuki top.

Guptkashi is situated 47kms before the holy shrine of Lord Shiva, Kedarnath. It is located on the route to Kedarnath on a ridge on the west side of the Mandakini river valley at an elevation of 1,319mts above sea level.

Guptkashi is a religiously important town of Uttarakhand as it houses ancient temples like Vishwanath temple and Ardhnareshwar temple. A highly revered attraction, Manikarnika Kund is where two streams of the Ganga and Yamuna meet.

Kedarnatha Trek

Kedarnatha trek is in one of the most significantly religious areas, especially in the Hindu Mythology. The Temple of Lord Kedarnatha (Shivji), which sits at the base of the summit, has stood the test of time and is revered amongst spiritual believers.

Millions of pilgrims move mountains to offer their prayers and seek blessings of the Hindu Deity each year. The temple itself lies at the base of the Kedarnath Peak, facing the Kedar Parvat. A beginner level trek, Kedarnath is especially beautiful in the winter months.

One of the most remarkable crests in the Himalayan region, both nature lovers and ardent trekkers tend to enjoy the experience.

Char Dham Yatra

The Chota Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand is the four abodes of holy shrines – Badrinath , Kedarnath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri . All four of these temples are situated within the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The prominence of the Charm Dham Yatra is immense amongst Hindus.

Moreover, it is believed that every Hindu should do Char Dham Yatra at least once in their lifetime. The Great Reformer and Philosopher, Adi Shankaracharya, gathered together these Holy Pilgrimage places into a spiritual circuit around the 8th century.

Generation followed generations and hundreds of thousands of devotees have kept up the tradition of covering these pilgrimage spots every year. Thus, it is very common to complete the circuit in one religious pilgrimage!

Char Dham Yatra 2011 Begins

Best places to stay near Kedarnath

There is a huge government-run tented colony along with cottages as well as rooms run by GMVN. These are sufficient to home more than a thousand pilgrims and visitors. Also, there are hotels, guest houses, and Dharamshala as well.

A lot of folks have started taking the journey via helicopters and thus stay locations can be Phata, Rampur, Gaurikund, Sitapur etc.

Best places to eat

Unfortunately, the only option for decent food here is the food stalls and roadside dhabas. Food available is mostly north Indian cuisine. Of course, given the highly revered place in Hinduism that Kedarnath holds, it should come as no surprise that alcohol and non-vegetarian food is not served/ is prohibited.

Things to keep in mind

  • As instructed by the Uttarakhand government, it is necessary for every traveler to do bio-metric registration. The facility is available online as well. Alternatively, you may also do the same at Sonprayag.
  • You can easily find mules & porters to accompany you on your journey. Do remember to check the prices officially posted so as to avoid paying a larger sum
  • Also, if you are hiring porters or mule owners – remember to check their official IDs
  • It is always wise to avoid the hilly terrain in the monsoon season. Especially given the tragedy of 2013, and how badly Kedarnath was hit. If you are still heading there in the monsoon period – do check with officials and local authorities
  • Photography is not allowed in the temple premises. Be mindful of the fact and abide by the rules of the temple authorities.

Tips when travelling to Kedarnath

  • The trek is 16 KM long and will take you 6 hours, depending on your health
  • Try to start your trek early in the morning to avoid the harshness of the afternoon sun
  • Remember to eat a hearty (though not heavy) breakfast
  • Drink water and stay hydrated. However, do remember to carry your own water bottles.

Uttarakhand, often referred to as the 'Land of Gods' (Devbhoomi), is a state steeped in spirituality and mysticism, nestled amidst the majestic Himalayas. The region is dotted with ancient temples, making it a pivotal destination for spiritual journeys and pilgrimages. In this comprehensive guide, we will traverse the serene and sacred landscapes of Uttarakhand, exploring some of its most revered temples: Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, among others.

Kedarnath Temple

Image

The Kedarnath Temple stands as one of the most prestigious temples in Uttarakhand. Located in the Rudraprayag district, this ancient shrine is not only a significant part of the Char Dham pilgrimage but also one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is situated at an impressive altitude of 3,583 meters above sea level, surrounded by snow-clad peaks and near the head of the Mandakini River.

The temple's architecture is a marvel of ancient craftsmanship, built with large, heavy stones that have stood the test of time and harsh weather. Pilgrims typically visit Kedarnath between April (Akshaya Tritiya) and November (Kartik Purnima), as the temple remains closed during the winter due to heavy snowfall. The journey to Kedarnath is both challenging and fulfilling, with a trek that is both physically demanding and spiritually uplifting.

Badrinath Temple

Badrinath Temple, another gem among the temples to visit in Uttarakhand, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is part of both the Char Dham pilgrimage in Uttarakhand and the larger Char Dham pilgrimage across India. This sacred temple is located in the town of Badrinath, perched at an elevation of about 3,300 meters.

The temple's vibrant façade and intricate architecture reflect a blend of Buddhist temple aesthetics and traditional Hindu design, a testament to the region’s historical and cultural fusion. The idol of Lord Vishnu depicted sitting in a meditative pose and flanked by Nar and Narayan, is made of Shaligram stone, a highly revered stone in Hinduism.

Gangotri and Yamunotri Temples

Image

The Gangotri and Yamunotri temples, dedicated to Goddesses Ganga and Yamuna respectively, are crucial stops for any spiritual seeker exploring temples in Uttarakhand. These temples mark the source of the rivers Ganga and Yamuna, which are not only vital to India's ecological system but also hold immense religious significance.

The Gangotri Temple is situated in the Uttarkashi district, at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. The temple itself is a beautiful 20th-century structure made of white marble. Pilgrims visit Gangotri to witness the pristine waters of the Bhagirathi River, which are believed to cleanse one's soul.

Similarly, the Yamunotri Temple, perched at a height of about 3,293 meters, is the first stop of the Char Dham pilgrimage. The temple houses an idol of Goddess Yamuna and offers a unique experience of cooking rice in the hot springs nearby, which devotees then offer to the deity.

Visiting these sacred spaces

When planning a visit to the temples in Uttarakhand, it's essential to consider the weather and terrain. The best time to visit is between April and November. However, due to the high altitudes and rough paths, it's crucial to prepare adequately with proper clothing, trekking gear, and physical readiness.

Additionally, respecting the local customs and the sanctity of these religious sites is paramount. Many of these temples have specific rituals and practices that are best approached with sensitivity and understanding.

The temples in Uttarakhand offer more than just a pilgrimage—they are a journey into the heart of India’s spiritual tradition, wrapped in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Himalayas.
