It’s official: Internet booking sites are the worst. Which means travel agents are back in a big way, to such a degree that the crème de la crème among them are so selective that they’ll work with only a small group of card-carrying members.

We talked to the top dogs at four very different membership travel companies to find out what kind of VIP hook ups they’ll get you—and how much hand-holding you can expect along the way.

Fischer Travel

The Gist: Founded almost 54 years ago by her father, Bill Fischer—who got his clients into sold-out spots like the Hotel du Cap in Antibes in the ’80s—this family-run business is as exclusive as a club gets. “We have a very serious vetting process,” says Fischer Rosenthal.

The Membership: You might want to sit down for this: a $100,000 initiation fee, plus an annual $25,000 renewal fee, plus service fees for all trip planning. And that’s only if you’re accepted. Right now, Fischer has just 175 members.

The Claim to Fame: One-on-one tennis lessons with John McEnroe, a private tour of the Egyptian pyramids, Christmas dinner cooked by a Michelin-starred chef—you name it, Fischer Rosenthal can do it. If she told us her team could move mountains, we’d almost believe her.

Hand-Holding Quotient: Next-level. “My clients will never check in at a front desk, they will never fill out any forms, they will never have a moment when their trip isn’t absolutely seamless.”

Essentialist

The Gist: Former Travelocity exec Roca ditched digital and went private bespoke in 2017 after realizing travelers didn’t need more choice—they needed more curation. His cabal of experts includes more than 75 journalists and editors specializing in various destinations around the world.

The Membership: A flat fee of $1,400 per household per year includes unlimited travel-planning services by a designated “travel designer” who knows everything about you, from what you like to eat to what you like to drive.

The Claim to Fame: Ultra-insider experiences are the name of Roca’s game, whether it’s the best paella in Majorca at a secret restaurant few locals know or a private dinner in a Venetian palazzo. “It’s not about the price tag,” he says. “It’s about discovering things that are under the radar and unique.”

Hand-Holding Quotient: Minimal. “Our client doesn’t require a lot of hand-holding,” Roca says. “They don’t want people standing at the door of their hotel room every morning. They just want to go.”

The Gist: With partner Jon Ein of private equity firm Foundry Capital, Backlund devised not an agency but a “travel community of like-minded individuals,” in which pay-for-play travel agents wouldn’t be welcome.

The Membership: $4,500 for a full annual membership with unlimited bespoke trip planning , or $1,750 for a one-trip planning fee. “We admit limited members to make sure the service standards are maintained,” Backlund says.

The Claim to Fame: Seamless execution of even the most complicated itineraries, whether it’s an island-hopping extravaganza in the Caribbean via private jet and yacht or a Scottish golf spree with 11 tee times in 11 days.

Hand-Holding Quotient: That’s up to you. “Our clients appreciate a significant portion of discovery—the thirst for exploration is definitely there,” Backlund says. But he’ll still hold your hand if you ask.

Inspirato Pass

The Gist: Handler is like the Thomas Edison of travel clubs . He invented the destination club with Exclusive Resorts in 2002, then went on to create Inspirato , a similar but more affordable club in 2011. The Inspirato Pass , his latest brainchild, is a subscription app.

The Membership: $2,500 per month gets you household booking rights to exclusive trips, events and accommodations—all at no added cost. The catch? After booking a trip, you have to take it before you can reserve another.

The Claim to Fame: There’s the usual hotel suites and over-the-top villas, but what gets really interesting is Inspirato Pass ’s access to marquee events and experiences, from US Open seats to a European river cruise.

Hand-Holding Quotient: Surprisingly high, for an app. “All Inspirato Pass trips include pre-trip planning by our expert travel designers, including custom itineraries,” says Handler. Impressive.

“Well that was extraordinary”

“Well, that was extraordinary. About a year ago our brother-in-law casually invited us to tag along on a family trip in Africa. Our kick-ass nephew Dawit was adopted from Ethiopia five years ago and the whole pack of nephews (four in all: Jack — 19, Luke — 17, Dawit — 15 and Josh — 14) and Steve’s sister Chris and brother-in-law John were all going to Ethiopia to visit with Dawit’s birth family, and were then headed to Botswana to go on a safari. Did we want to go? Steve was unflinchingly a yes vote, and I hedged for 5 minutes and then realized it was a once-in-a-lifetime offer. This is likely the last gasp with the pack of nephews in one place before they scatter to adulthood, and the chance to go to Africa with them on the heels of a visit to Dawit’s motherland? A true wouldn’t-miss-it opportunity. So, Africa we booked! We hadn’t ever planned on going to Africa, and certainly not for a safari (Expensive! Far! How much more impressive could animals be?) but we paid our deposit and figured the year-from-now day would come.”

Luxury travel agent lifts the lid on what it's like to plan vacations for the mega rich who splash out $500,000 for ONE trip - as she reveals the go-to destination of this summer

A luxury travel agent who plans vacations for the world's most elite clients has detailed what it's like to organize lavish trips for the ultra wealthy - and the destination hotspot of the summer. 

Over a decade ago, Jaclyn Sienna India founded Sienna Charles, a boutique travel firm that offers one-of-a-kind vacation organization to the rich who splash out over $500,000 on a single trip.

Since she began her business, the 42-year-old has mastered the art of giving mega billionaires and a slew of celebrities the most opulent trips - even helping former President George W. Bush and popstar Mariah Carey travel in style. 

And Jaclyn has no plans of slowing down any time soon. With business booming more than it ever has before, the lavish trip advisor has lifted the lid on just how the country's A-listers like to travel and where her affluent clients are jetting off to this summer. 

In a wide-ranging interview with The Cut , Jaclyn opened up about her wealthy clients and how she fulfills even their most outlandish requests. 

Jaclyn started by explaining that she began in the travel advisement industry at the age of 18 when she moved to Philadelphia and got a job at a five-star restaurant called Le Bec-Fin.

She told the outlet: 'I worked there for five years and it opened up my whole world. I was enamored with the people who came in — they were dressed beautifully, rolling up in Rolls-Royces and ordering $5,000 bottles of wine.' 

This opened up her eyes to the world of destinations, and soon enough she found herself working at a local travel agency. 

While there, Jaclyn realized that she wanted more, she imagined a greater trip - a specifically curated trip - for the most wealthy clients. 

That's when she realized she was onto something and decided to build her own company around helping the ultra-rich. 

'So I created my company 16 years ago based on the ethos of knowing the client, knowing the product, and providing everything they need,' the entrepreneur said. 

She wanted her firm to offer everything to the elite class so she created two distinct forms of membership. 

Most of her clients are based in New York, Dallas and Los Angeles, are aged 55 to 75 and work in tech. 

' We charge clients $75,000 a year for unlimited travel and dining reservations. Then it's $150,000 a year for unlimited travel, unlimited dining, and lifestyle. That would include arranging spa appointments, recruiting house staff, helping clients build a home gym, whatever they need,' the 42-year-old said. 

She explained that the first tier membership was best for clients who still had their hands tied with work and needed someone to handle all of their planning. 

The second membership option is perfect for those who have more opulent lifestyles and boast multiple homes, which according to Jaclyn means more 'lifestyles to manage.' 

The advisor explained that clients can contact her company at anytime for anything travel or lifestyle-related and they will be 'all hands on deck.' 

And to Jaclyn, there is no request that she can't handle. 

Speaking about what her clients ask of her, she told the outlet: '"How do I hire Taylor Swift for my birthday party?" or "Is there a new facial person in LA that you like?" There's no rules other than everything needs to be right now. We acknowledge all emails within five minutes. 

'And all our clients are really nice. We don't take on any jerks because the amount of work and hand-holding that goes into the back end is really full-on. But to me, there's no expectation that's unreasonable.' 

Jaclyn said that she keeps about 10 per cent from every hotel she books, which she explained adds up a lot when you are reserving multiple $30,000-a-night suites every month. 

However, the agent admitted that the most important thing to her is that her clients are happy, because if they're happy, they keep coming back. 

She explained that even if she can't fulfill one of her client's requests, but goes above and beyond for the other '128' demands, she knows she has secured a forever customer. 

As far as what she has made happen, Jaclyn confessed that anything is bookable - adding that it all comes down to the amount of money you have. 

The lavish travel advisor told The Cut: 'We've closed down Versailles for a private candlelit dinner. We've closed down monuments in Turkey. We've done really cool parties at the pyramids. We've never really had to say no. It all comes down to money. This is the cost. How much do you want to spend?' 

On her website , she offers things like 'private yacht in Dubai', 'morning with the monks,' and 'Bhutan by helicopter.' 

And when a client asks for something that doesn't exist, Jaclyn revealed that she often redirects them to a different activity or location she thinks is better for their expectations. 

To get into restaurants that are booked, Jaclyn admitted 'you have to know a person at the restaurant and have a relationship with them.' 

Jaclyn also dished out the details of the travel tips that the mega rich will be doing this year. 

She said that most of the A-listers put a 'FedEx label' on their bags and ship them to arrive at their destinations ahead of time so they don't have to lug them through the airport. 

'Another trend I see is that wealthy people don't eat out as much as you think. They have their own chefs who travel with them so that they can stay on a diet or keep pace with medical or health goals,' she added. 

And if you really want to travel like the ultra wealthy, Jaclyn has shared the location that they are heading to this summer. 

She confessed that her affluent clients have moved on from Capri and are now looking for a more 'unique' experience. 

'They're taking the yacht around Sardinia or going to smaller islands in Sicily. A lot of extremely wealthy clients aren't even staying at hotels anymore. I find that many hotels are not conducive to a real ultrahigh-net-worth situation. 

'They have that trophy penthouse, the $30,000-a-night suite, but there's a lot of heavy lifting to get things the way that the client is used to. People want a certain type of water, or certain foods, or a bedroom that is dark and has seven beds for their dog,' she told the outlet. 

And since the mega rich aren't staying at hotels anymore, Jaclyn revealed that villas and yachts are in and have become the new go-to spots to stay. 

Luckily, Jaclyn even gave 'normal' people advice on how to travel. She explained that if you don't quite have the funds, you shouldn't rely on the social media profiles of the mega rich and instead, find a location that fits your budget. 

Despite making an art out of dealing with billionaires, Jaclyn admitted that growing up, she wasn't wealthy. However, she knew she was 'born to be a billionaire.'

She told the outlet: 'I started working when I was 13 because I wanted my own money. I always wanted things to feel special. And that's my expectation for everything I do — I want excellence. It doesn't always need to be expensive, it just needs to be good. I must've been a princess or something in my past life.' 

Furthermore, she revealed that when she goes on vacations, she pays for everything herself, instead of getting it comped.

Pettitts Travel says it still finds fresh and simple ways to introduce new clients to its bespoke luxury trips even after more than three decades in business. 

Pettitts Travel has grown enormously since its establishment in 1988, expanding from a small high street shop in Tunbridge Wells into a thriving business across the UK featuring worldwide destinations. 

Today, it specialises in creating tailor-made luxury holidays in 25 countries for thousands of people a year. Also a tour operator, it holds a 98% positive feedback score and is the main contributor to the leisure division of CT Travel Group’s £43 million annual turnover.  

Pettitts’ success is perhaps best reflected, however, in its client base, which stands at an impressive retention rate of 65%.

Many of these are legacy customers who have been with the brand since the beginning, and the proof is in the bookings - the majority are made by older travellers with a disposable income and more time for long-haul getaways. Some have bought up to 50 holidays from Pettitts, having grown to trust the company’s expertise and attention to detail over the years. 

“Most of our clients want 17-day, tailor-made journeys in destinations like India,” Mark Kempster, chief executive of Pettitts Travel, tells  TTG Luxury . “This can be a minimum of £6,000 per person, so it tends to be people aged between mid-40s and 70s with decent budgets.” 

Pettitts Travel fits snugly into this comfort zone, but it’s not afraid to stretch itself further. New customers are the blood flow of any business, which is why the self-described ‘ entrepreneurial’ agency is always on the lookout to expand its client base.

Knowing well that its longer tours may not appeal to everyone, Pettitts has since also developed a strategic yet simple way to tap into an unlikely market. 

Short and sweet 

Pettitts has mastered the art of selling shorter trips to travellers with niche interests, who, in turn, may then book one of the agency’s longer tours. 

An example of this is the company’s collection of opera packages, which include 16 holidays to various opera houses around Europe. With the exception of one, all tours are just four days in length - making them an appetiser on Pettitts’ full menu.

The majority of the opera breaks sell for under £1,000, which again, allows travellers to experience the brand at a lower price before investing in a longer trip. 

“It’s an in-road into gaining new clients,” Kempster explains. “We have someone we work with to procure opera tickets, and then we market opera breaks to places like Verona, Milan, Venice, Milan and Rome. We put them together as packages with hotels, transfers and flights, and then market them to the client base and online.” 

He adds that this strategy is also behind Pettitts’ Venice Simplon-Orient-Express rail trip offering, which, at just two days in length, again targets travellers with less time on their hands. 

To Kempster, this is another effective way for the business to show new clients what it’s made of, so that, when that same guest wants to book a longer holiday, they’ll know exactly which agency to choose. 

“Down the line, they might become a client who goes on one of our tours to India,” he explains. These mini-breaks are also a shortcut to highlighting the clients’ tastes and preferences, helping Pettitts to market the right tour to the right person. “What we’re trying to anticipate is what might somebody be looking to use a business like ours for,” Kempster adds.

Happy supplier, happy client 

In Kempster’s experience, the satisfaction of the client is largely determined by the quality of the suppliers. In order to ensure they can emulate its high standard of service, Pettitts emphasises the importance of a collaborative work ethic. 

“We achieve strong relationships in key places by thinking of them as a partner, not just a supplier,” he explains. “When things do occasionally go wrong we try and understand why and work with them to mitigate things in the future. We understand they need to make money as well as us, so we keep the relationship personal. We visit them when possible and thank their staff personally.

“In India, we have a team of 16 people, including drivers and guides, working on the ground exclusively for us.” This close communication with an in-house team gives Pettitts more control to curate and personalise its tours, which is inevitably to the benefit of clients. 

As for new destinations, Pettitts is also planning to launch product in Central Asian countries such as Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, adding that it ultimately hopes to offer tours that visit the Belt and Road initiative. 

“There is great opportunity there for tourism, especially for handheld adventure,” Kempster says. “We’ll never send hundreds of people a year to this region, but if we can send 20 or 30 people to two or three of those countries, on tailor-made tours, that’s great for us. I’m very excited about it.”
